Saving Some Cap For Trade Deadline Is The Smart Play

00:00Speaking of the NFL, the Lions have some cap space. You know, we were reading that Sports
00:05Illustrated account with the writers predicting the next five Super Bowl winners, and one guy
00:11predicts the Lions to win back-to-back Super Bowls, and he said that the key is adding that receiver.
00:21That receiver to complement Amaranth St. Brown. He said maybe it will be Jamo like the team thinks,
00:25maybe it'll be Donovan Peoples-Jones, but the key to everything is adding that receiver. I don't
00:31love the free agent receivers, Hunter Renfro, Michael Thomas, so does it come via trade?
00:40First of all, we have to decide whether or not they need that guy, if we agree with that.
00:46If they do, it feels like it's more likely to come via trade than free agency.
00:49Yeah, and I think if they determine that, I feel like that's not going to be determined
00:53until the trade deadline. I don't think they'd make that move prior to. I think if they make
00:59a move prior to, it might be for an edge rusher, just because if they could get an upgrade. We
01:06mentioned the names, there was an article that came out last week of potential names that could
01:11be moved before training camp begins, and it had Matthew Judon was one of the names, and so was
01:18Khalil Mack, and suggesting that you could get those guys for maybe a third round pick,
01:25because those teams need to rebuild, they got to move on, and both of those guys are in their 30s,
01:30and in Khalil Mack's case, I think he's like 33, even though he's coming off a wildly productive
01:34season, and Judon's coming off a year where he only played four games last year, but he had four
01:39sacks in four games, but would that make sense? And I'm thinking, if I could get Khalil Mack
01:45for the next year, before his contract is up, for just a third round pick,
01:51okay, let's do it, but we'll see if that's in the cards. I don't know if that's in the cards. It's
01:56just one guy suggesting these are trades that could happen. Yeah, I mean, that would be awesome.
02:02But I'm guessing that they're going to keep this cap space open for the trade deadline,
02:09and see where they're at, because they know they're good, right? So at that point,
02:14if you're a really good football team, you're looking for the piece that's going to put you
02:17over the top, and you're halfway, almost halfway through the season at that point,
02:21you'll know about injuries with your team, hopefully there are very few to deal with,
02:26and just some guys might just want out of their current situations, and it might be perfect for
02:31the Lions to go ahead and take that gamble on a rental player, because that's really what it
02:35would be, you're taking on a rental player. So it's so smart when you think about it,
02:40because what if James Houston gets back to what he was, and is a demon off the edge,
02:46but they do need another wide receiver? What if JMO answers all the questions at wide receiver,
02:52and James Houston doesn't? So they are keeping themselves the flexibility to address
03:00an issue if one emerges, and it does make a ton of sense to just take that into,
03:04take that cap space into the season. The weird thing is, probably the receiver that
03:08gets the most trade talk these days is Brandon Ayuk from the 49ers.
03:13There's like no way the Niners and Lions would strike a deal like that.
03:16Absolutely not. I can't, no, I can't see that. And yeah, you're talking about trading a guy that
03:22wants a new contract. I don't think, Lions are looking for guys, I would imagine at this point,
03:28that have to be dirt cheap or the rentals. They're one-year guys. So that's, your free
03:32agency, you give them a one-year contract, that's the dirt cheap route. Or you find a rental on a
03:38guy who's got an expiring contract. It seems to make sense. There are some rumblings that,
03:42you know, free agents are going to start to land places in the next couple of weeks.
03:46Well, we got training camps starting up, so they're going to have to go somewhere.
03:50There's some good players out there. The Tennessee Titans today came to
03:54agreement with Jamal Adams, the safety. So there goes one of the safeties off the market.
04:01If the Lions do have a signing, a press conference will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m.,
04:06preempting any previously scheduled broadcast. You're on 97.1 to ticket. You're unbelievable.
