00:00:00Burglaries are on the rise in your neighborhood and you have concerns about whether your house might be vulnerable.
00:00:08You have no surveillance system, so tonight you're placing some foil over the front door handle before you go to bed.
00:00:16This will help identify if someone sneakily tries to enter while you sleep.
00:00:22You wake up the next morning and it appears the foil is slightly ripped.
00:00:27Someone has been here and they're sure to return.
00:00:31Another option is to put a mug on the doorknob.
00:00:35When the knob turns, the mug will fall, causing a noise to wake you up and hopefully deter the intruder.
00:00:43Your main concern is that a tradesman stopped by recently.
00:00:46He said that he was working next door and asked to use your toilet.
00:00:52You refused and felt bad at the time for being rude, but it was a very smart move.
00:00:59About 60% of burglaries in the USA are made by someone you know or have met before.
00:01:06That tradesman, while going to the bathroom, could have adjusted something in your house to make their return entry a little easier.
00:01:13They may have wanted to take a closer look at what security system is installed,
00:01:18check the structural integrity of your home, and found out what valuable loot you might have.
00:01:24Finally, today you're going on vacation.
00:01:28You need to prepare your house and make it as safe as possible.
00:01:32A full postbox is the first thing a robber will look for in a target.
00:01:37Your neighbor will need to take your mail while you're away.
00:01:40A well-manicured property is a clear sign that you are always there.
00:01:46You've always kept your lawn mown and hedges trimmed, so you will need to arrange for someone to do this while you're away.
00:01:53If it was winter, any untouched snow around your house would also make it a target.
00:01:59Having a neighbor make pretend footprints that show recent activity will also provide a deterrent.
00:02:06There are many types of hedges that act as a great first defense.
00:02:11Luckily, you have sharp-leaved shrubs along your fences.
00:02:15If someone jumps into your property and lands on a sharp or spiky bush, they will immediately cry out in discomfort.
00:02:23This will alert your neighbors of an intruder.
00:02:26And the foliage will also catch fragments of clothing that could be used as evidence later.
00:02:33In preparation for your trip the week before, you opened and closed your curtains at random times throughout the day.
00:02:41You made sure there were no clear patterns, so it won't matter if they're left open while you're away, just in case someone was scouting your property.
00:02:51Burglars spend several days walking or driving through neighborhoods, identifying the behaviors of each house.
00:02:59One thing they don't really like is a neighborhood watch.
00:03:03Criminals do their research before they start scouting and will avoid these areas.
00:03:08Something for you to organize when you get back.
00:03:12Now, move all your expensive electronics away from the windows so there's nothing of value in clear view.
00:03:19Put them inside a cupboard or a concealed room.
00:03:23Don't worry about TVs. They're too large and take effort to move.
00:03:28The criminals are more interested in the smaller devices, like an iPad and gaming devices.
00:03:35Put your small expensive items like jewelry in boxes and hide them away in a secret location.
00:03:41Surprisingly, a kid's room is a good spot.
00:03:44Burglars have admitted to never going into them, as there's nothing of value in toys.
00:03:50Take photos of all the serial numbers on your electronic devices and create an inventory for insurance purposes.
00:03:5995% of break-ins are done by force, so it's time to reinforce your windows and doors.
00:04:07You can make it even more difficult for the crooks.
00:04:10Remove all stools, chairs, and ladders in the backyard and put them into your garage.
00:04:15Otherwise, they will help provide easier access points to higher entrances, like the air conditioner box.
00:04:23This is one of their favorites. Without a way to reinforce it, it's easy to tear off and creates an entrance.
00:04:30Don't make it easier for them with a step-up.
00:04:34Burglars can break down a weak door within one minute.
00:04:38Install a metal frame instead of wood for more support.
00:04:42The hinges and lock should have adequate strength to withstand being kicked long enough until they give up.
00:04:50With the lock as the remaining weak spot, this can easily be kicked by an experienced thief.
00:04:56A simple protection lock that holds it in place will make sure it won't budge.
00:05:02The hinges on your garage door swing outwards, which makes it vulnerable and can be accessed by taking the pins out of the hinges.
00:05:10Replace them with tamper-proof pins so they can't be removed.
00:05:16And lastly, the garage overhead door is one of the first places a burglar looks to access.
00:05:22They don't have a lock that fully secures them.
00:05:25Attach a padlock on the latch connecting it to the track, holding it in place.
00:05:29Your garage door doesn't have this option, so drill a hole in the track just above one of the rollers and attach a padlock.
00:05:38Robbers are scared of dogs, the territorial and loyal guardians of the house.
00:05:43A survey found that most houses burgled didn't have dogs because thieves don't want to draw attention during a heist.
00:05:52Unfortunately, you don't own one.
00:05:55Unfortunately, you don't own one.
00:05:58But just placing a dog bowl outside the front door will discourage them.
00:06:04Burglars have adapted their craft with technology.
00:06:07Four out of five criminals use social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps to find their targets.
00:06:15Even sharing a photo with a house key in it is enough for a burglar to create their own key by zooming in and taking the exact measurements.
00:06:26Make sure your wireless network is secure and use a new, much stronger password while away.
00:06:32You're not only vulnerable to physical objects being stolen.
00:06:37Valuable data like passwords and access codes can be taken through your network.
00:06:41And there's also the threat of infecting devices through malicious malware.
00:06:47You can also remove the vision of your house completely from Google Maps.
00:06:53Type in your home address, find the street view of your residence, press the options button, and select report a problem.
00:07:02You'll be taken to a screen with an image of your home with the option to move a red square to cover your property.
00:07:12Request it to be blurred under the option My Home and enter your exact address.
00:07:18It will only take a couple of days to be processed.
00:07:22Don't leave the radio on while away. It won't help.
00:07:26Through the burglar's method of scouting houses, they take note of radio and TV sounds.
00:07:33When they return, they check if they're still on, which just makes it easier to confirm that no one's home.
00:07:42An alternative option to show active presence at home is by making your own audio.
00:07:47Something that plays ambient noises randomly throughout the day with footsteps, conversations, and a dog barking.
00:07:56Leaving your lights on is also not a good idea.
00:08:00Someone spying will notice your house easier, especially at night.
00:08:04And you'll be further robbed on your electricity bill.
00:08:07You're just about ready to leave on your vacation and need to take the trash out.
00:08:12If you have some large boxes, break them down so they can fit inside the bin.
00:08:17Hide any clues about what valuables you recently received.
00:08:22Last check, all the doors are locked and no windows are left open.
00:08:27Now you can finally enjoy your trip.
00:08:29But as you enjoy yourself in your picturesque location, leave any snaps on your phone while you're over there and post them online only when you return.
00:08:40If you do share your photos while you're away, it will have made all your preparations pointless.
00:08:46Every criminal in the area will know you're not home.
00:08:51But with 2.5 million houses burgled annually in the USA,
00:08:55a house without a modern security system is 300% more likely to be broken into.
00:09:01When you get back from your break, it will be a great idea to install one.
00:09:06Oops, another burglary in the U.S. has just occurred.
00:09:10Wait another 22.6 seconds and there will be another one.
00:09:14Hey, no need to worry about your property.
00:09:17Forewarned, forearmed.
00:09:19Let's explore a few tips on how to protect your property.
00:09:22A mere sticker can contribute a lot to your house's safety.
00:09:26For instance, you can use a sticker that says you have a home security system, even if in reality you don't.
00:09:33It may not sound convincing enough, but still, burglars prefer not to mess with such houses.
00:09:38Just one more tip here.
00:09:40Make sure the sticker looks true to life, so a makeshift sign won't do.
00:09:44It's better to fork out some money and grab a real one.
00:09:47Another smart trick is to leave a pair of really large shoes on the porch, so that the burglars could clearly see them.
00:09:54It will make them think someone big and dangerous lives there, and they won't fancy meeting them.
00:10:02Right, now let's inspect your door.
00:10:05I hope you don't leave the keys under the doorman.
00:10:07The only things you can leave behind are your keys and your wallet.
00:10:11Right, now let's inspect your door.
00:10:14I hope you don't leave the keys under the doorman.
00:10:16The only things you can leave under the mat are the cookies or chips.
00:10:20This is a fun way to see if someone was visiting you while you were away.
00:10:24However, the trick doesn't give you a 100% guarantee.
00:10:27It might be a mailman, a delivery guy who got the wrong door, or even a random dog hanging around your porch.
00:10:34Yeah, cookies feel better in your stomach, not under the doorman.
00:10:40Okay, you're back home from work. It was a tough day and you're tired.
00:10:44You leave the keys in the keyhole and completely forget about it.
00:10:48Right, the main thing is that you've locked the door and the keys are inside.
00:10:52But who said there is no burglar in the bushes targeting your house?
00:10:56Technically, it might be impossible to insert a dupe and get in if there's a key in the keyhole.
00:11:01But these guys are well equipped and have a whole assortment of hooks to lure the key out.
00:11:06You know what happens next.
00:11:07They can seep into your house as silently as ninjas and grab all your valuables while you're peacefully sleeping.
00:11:14A lock that can only be closed from the inside and can't be opened from the outside seems like a good solution.
00:11:23When moving to a new place, even if you didn't buy it but rent it, make sure to change the locks.
00:11:29Who knows how many copies of those keys there are.
00:11:32As for renting, you never know who lived there before you moved in.
00:11:35Also, if for some reason you accidentally left your keys in the front door for some time, the best thing to do is to change the lock.
00:11:43Yeah, probably nothing bad will happen, but still, it's better to play it safe.
00:11:50Plus, not only should you stop leaving the keys in the door, but you also shouldn't leave them on display.
00:11:56Maybe it's better to bring the keys to the living room instead of keeping them near the front door.
00:12:00Sometimes, burglars can use not only your door, but your window too.
00:12:07Mind your trash, especially if you throw away some pricey stuff packaging.
00:12:12Don't let the thieves know what you purchased and how much you paid for it.
00:12:16Also, your trash may contain some essential information about your personal data, credit card details, and so much more.
00:12:26Keep an eye on your mailbox.
00:12:28Make sure you have a lock on it.
00:12:30Thing is, burglars may be quite interested in your mail contents, so the secret is simple.
00:12:35Keep the mailbox locked and make sure you shred any personal data related papers.
00:12:42Now let's inspect your front lawn.
00:12:45Hey, I can see something compromising.
00:12:48I'm talking about these large bushes.
00:12:50Yeah, I know, you don't have time to trim them.
00:12:52The larger they get, the more space there is for the burglars to hide.
00:12:55Plus, if someone sees untrimmed shrubs and trees in the front yard, they might think nobody's home.
00:13:01You see the point, right?
00:13:05Okay, let's say you ignored all the previous tips and burglars broke into your house.
00:13:10The most interesting thing for them is surely cash.
00:13:14If you don't have any cash at home, you can skip this tip.
00:13:18But if you have valuables, get creative.
00:13:21Cash can be stuffed into a plastic bag.
00:13:23Cash can be stuffed into a plastic bag and hidden in a large container with some leftovers.
00:13:29Also, you can place that plastic bag into an old detergent bottle you keep in the storeroom or the kitchen.
00:13:35Burglars aren't likely to look for your stash there.
00:13:38A couple of don'ts here.
00:13:40Hiding cash or jewels in a prescription pills container isn't that smart.
00:13:45And yeah, a freezer isn't the best option either.
00:13:48Many burglars like to check it in the first place.
00:13:53Time to see if you keep your keys right.
00:13:56If you keep your car and house keys together, you might want to reconsider it.
00:14:01First off, imagine you lose them and burglars somehow know where you live.
00:14:05Not only will they grab what they want, but they'll also have a vehicle to transport all your hard-earned belongings.
00:14:14Keep an eye on your garage keys, especially if it's possible to sneak into your house through your garage.
00:14:20Even if it isn't, who said there are no valuables in the garage?
00:14:26However, there are no limits whatsoever for burglars.
00:14:30They can sneak into houses even through small windows.
00:14:33The reason why they prefer doors is that it's the safest way,
00:14:37while squeezing through the window can get scratches and it's not that they don't want to spoil their looks.
00:14:43The thing is, if they leave their DNA, they can be traced.
00:14:46However, crooks are careful about not leaving their traces.
00:14:50For instance, a report from England claims only about 3% of burglars leave forensic evidence.
00:14:59To protect yourself at night, there are several options.
00:15:03Number one, insert a large paper clip or a bobby pin inside the keyhole.
00:15:08You can use a spare pair of keys if you have them.
00:15:11This way, you'll make it extremely hard, if not impossible, for the burglars to use the key dupes.
00:15:17Number two, barricading is an option.
00:15:20It can be a heavy chair, a bookshelf, you name it.
00:15:23I mean, why not, if it makes you feel safe?
00:15:28If your door opens outwardly, a jammer could do a great job for you.
00:15:33A chair can be super handy.
00:15:35Secure it under the doorknob.
00:15:37It's not the most powerful security system, but at least it does its job.
00:15:41Binding the doorknobs or handles together can be an option too.
00:15:45A dummy security camera can protect you during the day and night.
00:15:49Again, burglars are not as fearless as they may seem.
00:15:52If you have a real CCTV, make sure the crooks don't deactivate it.
00:15:56So place it in some hard-to-get place.
00:16:01If you're ready to fork out some money for protection, then the motion sensor light is exactly what you need.
00:16:07Crooks like dim spots, and once they approach your place, they'll be frightened off by the bright lights.
00:16:12This solution works as long as the burglars know you're home.
00:16:16In case they're sure you're away, it's way less efficient.
00:16:22TV and radio timers are another trick.
00:16:25With their help, you can imitate your home even if you're not.
00:16:28A perfect match for the motion sensor light.
00:16:31This trick can help outsmart some burglars, but again, it doesn't give a 100% guarantee.
00:16:36Some of them aren't afraid to break in, even if the TV's on.
00:16:42What about live alarm systems?
00:16:45This can be real or fake too.
00:16:47I'm talking about dogs.
00:16:49Remember the trick with the boots?
00:16:51You can do the same with a dog if you don't have one.
00:16:54Leave a large bowl on the porch, but make sure it all looks real.
00:16:58I mean, the bowl should not look untouched and brand new.
00:17:01Hey, do you know all your neighbors?
00:17:04If not, it's high time you baked some cookies and visited them to know them better.
00:17:09First, the crooks don't really like to operate in areas where few people know each other and care for each other.
00:17:15This way, their chances of being spotted and reported are extremely high.
00:17:20So, a sort-of-neighborhood watch is a perfect way to protect your house.
00:17:24And who knows, find new friends.
00:17:26You've probably heard that when a burglar decides which house to target, they start by casing it.
00:17:32This means that they watch the owners, find out information about their routine, and determine the best time for entering their home.
00:17:40By the time they're ready to commit the crime, they already know for sure when there won't be anybody inside or when the owners will be distracted.
00:17:48One of the tricks thieves use to get away from the burglars is to use a watch.
00:17:53One of the tricks thieves use to gather information about your routine is so simple that you may not even give it a second thought.
00:18:02But the next time you hear a quiet crackle under the sole of your shoe, stop and check what it was.
00:18:08The chances are high that you'll find yourself face-to-face with a crushed cookie.
00:18:13If that's the case, it's your clue that something has gone terribly wrong.
00:18:17The thing is, this is a rather effective tool criminals use to find out if you've left on a trip or when exactly you come home in the evening.
00:18:25A cookie is such an innocent object that people don't usually give it much thought, if they even notice it at all.
00:18:32You arrive home, step on the cookie, make it crumble, and automatically reveal all your secrets to burglars.
00:18:39They know for sure if the house is lived in and can also figure out the schedule of its owners.
00:18:43Things get even worse if you're away from home.
00:18:47The cookie under the doormat remains whole, thus alerting criminals that the house is perfect for a break-in.
00:18:53So, if you find some treats under your doormat, that's pretty bad news.
00:18:58Someone is interested in your house and watching it.
00:19:01It might be a good idea to notify the police or take some safety measures.
00:19:05Now, the ploy with a cookie is just one of the numerous tricks used by burglars.
00:19:09One more sign that can alert you to the fact that you're being watched is white pebbles left near the house or in the driveway.
00:19:17This means that a criminal has already visited your home and marked it as worth entering.
00:19:22Another reason why thieves may have left the pebbles is to indicate that your house stays empty during the day.
00:19:28So, if you're walking along the street and notice a USB flash drive sticking out of a curb or a wall, don't get confused.
00:19:36You have most likely stumbled across a dead drop.
00:19:40Despite its ominous name, this is a global art project that has borrowed some tricks from the world of spies and espionage.
00:19:47Lots of people who know about this project are happy to be able to put on their black coat and dark sunglasses and go to swap confidential information with others.
00:19:56The thing is that many decades ago, spies had their own ways to exchange secret materials.
00:20:01There was a live drop when spies met in person, but this was often extremely dangerous.
00:20:07That's why a dead drop system was invented.
00:20:10In this case, some loose bricks in a wall in an alleyway hid important documents that had to be picked up later.
00:20:17Nowadays, there are more than 1,500 dead drops all over the world, and the accumulated data on these flash drives reaches 10 terabytes.
00:20:26You can come across a dead drop on any continent you visit, except Antarctica, maybe because there are not so many walls there.
00:20:34So, if you find one, what do you do with it?
00:20:37First of all, it's highly inadvisable to connect random USB flash drives to your computer.
00:20:43You never know what viruses are lurking there, looking forward to destroying your hard drive content.
00:20:48And while risk is a part of the game, don't overdo it.
00:20:51If you're 100% sure that you want to play, secure your computer as well as you can, or even better.
00:20:58Secondly, you can't even guess what information will be waiting for you on a flash drive.
00:21:03Anyone can download videos, photos, or text files, and this has already led to several problems.
00:21:09Speaking of which, have you got a parcel with a USB stick in it?
00:21:13Whatever you decide to do with it, don't plug the flash drive in.
00:21:17Such cases have been more and more frequent in Australia.
00:21:21The police warn people that hackers have invented a new tactic.
00:21:25They drop unmarked memory sticks to letterboxes.
00:21:28It'll probably come as no surprise that these devices contain malware able to mess up your computer.
00:21:34They evidently rely on human curiosity, and, in all honesty, it pays off.
00:21:40People can't fight an inexplicable desire to check the contents of a mysterious gift.
00:21:46As a result, almost half of USB sticks received by post get plugged in.
00:21:51After that, people start having serious problems with their laptops and computers.
00:21:56For example, fraudulent media begins to stream service offers, or computer viruses harm files and programs on a PC.
00:22:04So, no touching the free flash drive, ok?
00:22:07Now, you leave a shopping mall, your office, an airport, and go to the parking lot to find your car.
00:22:13You unlock it and put the key in the ignition.
00:22:16When you're about to start your vehicle and drive away, you see something strange on your windshield.
00:22:21Is that a $100 bill wrapped around your wiper?
00:22:24Oh, you could certainly find a way to spend this unexpected gift.
00:22:28But do you really think someone accidentally put money on your windshield and forgot all about it?
00:22:34Beware, this is nothing but a ruse.
00:22:37Because, as soon as you get out of your car to get a closer look at this mysterious banknote,
00:22:42the owner of the banknote will take action.
00:22:45They will get into your car and drive off at a record-breaking speed.
00:22:48Let's admit that no one would turn off their ignition and take their belongings with them
00:22:53if they got out of their car to check the windshield for a C-note.
00:22:57As a result, in under a minute, you'll lose your car, your wallet, and your documents,
00:23:02and you'll be left stranded in the parking lot.
00:23:04People have recently started to find some article of clothing, like a shirt, for instance,
00:23:09lying on their windshield or wrapped up in their wipers.
00:23:12If you ever happen to be one of these people, don't fall into this trap,
00:23:15and don't try to remove the object.
00:23:18Just get in your car and drive away as fast as you can from the place you were parked.
00:23:23This seemingly misplaced garment is actually a new con being used by muggers and thieves.
00:23:29It works like this.
00:23:31If you see some random piece of clothing that prevents your wipers from moving or obscures your view,
00:23:36your first reaction will be to remove it, of course.
00:23:39But while you're distracted untying it or trying to get it off,
00:23:42the criminal has plenty of time to jump you.
00:23:46The most common place for this sort of scam is parking garages.
00:23:49They're usually badly lit and pretty deserted,
00:23:52which means there are few witnesses around and plenty of dark spaces for the attacker to lie in wait.
00:23:58Now, if one day you come home and notice some graffiti or markings on your door or house,
00:24:03call the police immediately.
00:24:05Even if it just looks like a teenage prank or a simple scratch,
00:24:08it's better to be safe than sorry,
00:24:11because burglars use certain marks to tell other criminals different things about your house.
00:24:16For example, something resembling a Roman numeral 2 means that the homeowners are rich,
00:24:22so the place is a great target.
00:24:24On the other hand, a crossed circle tells other burglars that there's nothing valuable to take from the house.
00:24:30Hmm, kind of makes you want to mark your own house like that.
00:24:33Now, a long horizontal rectangle divided into four parts
00:24:36means the place has a big aggressive guard dog.
00:24:40A triangle divided into two parts by a vertical line tells criminals to hit the place only at night,
00:24:46while a reversed one says that a house or apartment is free after dinner.
00:24:51And something looking like a combined A and K
00:24:54lets their fellow burglars know that the house is always full of people.
00:24:58Hey, did you know there's even a fraternity for burglars who love to steal desserts named Iota Grab a Pie?
00:25:05Sorry, I made that up.
00:25:07A new trick being used by car thieves, and that's the trick with a coin.
00:25:12They slip it into the space between the door and the door handle.
00:25:15When a car owner thinks they've locked the door with a remote, the vehicle is, in fact, still open.
00:25:21The coin prevents the lock on one of the doors from working.
00:25:24As soon as the owner walks away from the car,
00:25:27the thief has no problems at all opening the door and driving away.
00:25:31Another trick.
00:25:33As soon as there's some public gathering, a big party, or even a busy day at the mall,
00:25:37car thieves make an announcement over the PA system that a particular car, chosen by them, of course,
00:25:43has blocked their vehicle in and they can't leave.
00:25:46As soon as the owner comes out to move his car, a group of guys start to act.
00:25:51They assume, and for good reason, that the person is carrying the key to his car.
00:25:56If you think a deadbolt lock will stop a home intruder,
00:26:00don't be fooled. 60% of burglaries happen through forced entry,
00:26:04so these people definitely know how to get into your home, even when it's all locked up.
00:26:08As for 30% of home invasions, they involve an intruder just coming right in through an unlocked door or window.
00:26:1565% of all burglaries happen between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., exactly when you're at work.
00:26:22Before executing a break-in, an experienced burglar spends days, if not weeks, casing the place.
00:26:29They study your schedule and daily routine so they'll know exactly when you'll be gone and for how long.
00:26:35They find this information out by watching you from afar or by using some other tricks of the trade.
00:26:42One of the most popular things burglars are doing nowadays is tying a thread on the front door handle
00:26:47and fixing it to the nearby wall or door frame.
00:26:50This thread is so thin that a casual onlooker won't even notice it.
00:26:55By examining the thread, burglars can figure out the pattern of your life.
00:26:59It may reveal to them when you leave for work, go to the gym, head out for a weekend getaway,
00:27:04and of course, when you come back home.
00:27:07With this information in hand, they can plan the perfect break-in.
00:27:11Experienced burglars have a checklist of easy target homes.
00:27:15First, you leave your doors or windows unlocked.
00:27:18Locking your house up seems like a no-brainer here, yet so many people don't do it.
00:27:22They may be lulled into a false sense of security by their tall fence or quiet neighborhood.
00:27:28Or perhaps they think, I'm just making a quick run to the corner store.
00:27:32What could possibly happen in five minutes?
00:27:35Believe it or not, this is more than enough time for a skilled burglar to get in,
00:27:39grab your valuables, and make their getaway.
00:27:41Your house is empty during the day.
00:27:44There's a common misconception that burglaries happen at night, but that's when most people are at home.
00:27:49This increases a burglar's risk of getting caught.
00:27:52It's much safer for them to operate during the day when everybody's at work or school.
00:27:57If you constantly share pictures and posts on social media about your expensive things or extravagant vacations,
00:28:04don't be surprised if one day you find some valuables missing from your home.
00:28:08There are certain things you can do to make yourself less of a burglary target.
00:28:12Nothing beats a home security system and surveillance.
00:28:15If a criminal notices an alarm and an operating camera,
00:28:18they'll most likely cross your home off their list of potential targets.
00:28:21Surprisingly, just a beware of dog sign can prevent burglary.
00:28:25It's even better if you have an actual dog, though.
00:28:28That tall fence and thick shrubbery that provide your home with some privacy can work against you.
00:28:34Sure, your neighbors can't see what you're up to in your backyard,
00:28:37but they also won't be able to notice if some dishonest citizen invites themselves into your house while you're away.
00:28:43Consider opening up the area around your home so that it doesn't seem so isolated.
00:28:48Are you one of those people who keep their wallet and car keys in a bowl near the front door?
00:28:53Yes, it's really convenient to have everything right there as you're heading out.
00:28:57But if a burglar breaks into your house during the night,
00:29:00nothing will be easier for them than to grab your valuables and quietly sneak away.
00:29:04The best place to keep your car keys and wallet at night is near your bed.
00:29:09Stay safe out there.
00:29:18First thing you need to do is check what the noise is.
00:29:21If you suspect someone's in your house, do this quickly and quietly.
00:29:25It might just be a mouse that knocks something over.
00:29:28Still, if your suspicions are confirmed and you see someone in your dining hall, look for a way out immediately.
00:29:35Use the fire escape ladder if you have one. Otherwise, a window might do the trick.
00:29:40Still, chances are you'll have to stay put.
00:29:42Grab the phone and call the authorities.
00:29:45Give them your address and explain the situation as briefly as you can.
00:29:49And in a heartbeat, they'll dispatch a unit to your house.
00:29:52Reaching your street, they can't find your house number anywhere.
00:29:56They get there eventually, but only after having followed the numbers from other houses in the neighborhood.
00:30:01By the time the authorities arrive, the burglar's already escaped.
00:30:05That's because your house number can barely be seen. It's so tiny.
00:30:09Your mailbox's one is barely noticeable, too.
00:30:12Get a new and shiny plaque. Make sure the number's big and visible.
00:30:17This will not only help your guests find your house sooner, but you'll also avoid the authorities missing your house next time.
00:30:24While you're at it, make sure the mailbox number's visible, too.
00:30:28Another good way to protect your house is by adding a fence to it if you don't already have one.
00:30:33Make sure it's hard to get through.
00:30:35Use chain link or even metal fencing.
00:30:38Dig it into concrete as well, so burglars can't lift it.
00:30:42If you're okay with a rough look, you can even try out barbed wire fencing.
00:30:46Next up, add lighting to your yard.
00:30:49Because if your yard's all dark, it'll be a perfect target for unwanted visitors.
00:30:54Keep a few lamps outside that you can turn on and off.
00:30:57A well-lit yard will let you see what's up outside. And your neighbors, too.
00:31:01If they spot someone, they'll call you and the authorities if need be.
00:31:06A spotlight camera is an extra. It usually stays off during daytime and works with a motion detector.
00:31:12It's really bright and lights up when it senses any movement.
00:31:16You can even get one that also starts recording at once.
00:31:20So not only will you frighten burglars, but we'll also have video proof in case anything does happen.
00:31:26Another thing is a ring camera.
00:31:28Whenever someone rings the door, you can pick it up without even being home.
00:31:33Since your phone's connected to the doorbell, you only need to answer the call wherever you are.
00:31:38If it's someone you don't know and you're smelling something fishy, you can pretend to be home and let them know you're not interested.
00:31:45Dense shrubs in your yard will give the burglar a place to hide, and you might not even notice there's someone trespassing.
00:31:52Keep your shrubbery closely trimmed.
00:31:53It'll not only keep you safe, but also add a bit more shine to your yard.
00:31:58While you're out on vacation, avoid posting your whereabouts on social media.
00:32:03Say someone's had your house on their radar for a while now.
00:32:06You being gone is the perfect opportunity for them to strike.
00:32:10Leave posting the nice pictures you took for when you get back home, and you can keep an eye on things.
00:32:15Oh, and don't show people what you do day to day, either.
00:32:19It'll be easy for someone to keep track of your daily schedule and plan an assault for when you're out grocery shopping, for example.
00:32:26This one's obvious, but always lock your home when you leave, even if you think you live in a safe neighborhood.
00:32:33And if you've just moved into a new house, change your locks, too.
00:32:37It works for apartments as well, or even if you're just renting a room.
00:32:41You can never be too safe.
00:32:43Always keep the appearance that someone's inside the house, even when it's empty.
00:32:48The first way to do it is leave your television on, or even better, buy a TV simulator.
00:32:55This way, you can program it to turn on and off as you please.
00:32:59I mean, it'd be weird if it was constantly on.
00:33:02It'll save you a couple of bucks as well, because simulators consume less than the real thing.
00:33:07Get a plug-in alarm clock as well, and connect a lamp to it.
00:33:11Set timers for it to go off, let's say dinner time, and for a while at night.
00:33:15You can also get an extra alarm clock and connect a radio to it.
00:33:19If people think you're blasting some tunes, they surely won't try to do anything.
00:33:24Don't forget any valuable items outside, things like your grill, bikes, and any machinery you might have.
00:33:30Store them inside your garage instead, and lock it tight.
00:33:34Security cameras outside your home will let you keep an eye on things, even while you're at work.
00:33:39This one's particularly good if you're extra worried someone's going to break in.
00:33:42Consider reinforcing your door, even if it's relatively new.
00:33:46Instead of breaking in, they might try and completely knock down the door if they're desperate to get in.
00:33:51Get a sturdier one that won't come down easily.
00:33:54This goes for windows too.
00:33:56It's worth investing in a type of glass that won't break when a rock hits it.
00:34:00Or use security film.
00:34:03It's a strong, transparent plastic you put on your windows to strengthen them.
00:34:07Even if your windows break, this film will hold the shards of glass in place.
00:34:10It'll delay the entry by quite a bit, so they might even quit the whole thing.
00:34:15How much mail you've got also lets people know if you're home or not.
00:34:19If there's a huge pile of it, it's clear you haven't checked it for at least a couple of days.
00:34:23So even if your house wasn't a target, it might be now.
00:34:27Get familiar with your neighbors.
00:34:29Invite them over for a cup of tea, and talk about your concerns.
00:34:32You'll watch their back, and they'll watch yours.
00:34:35And if anyone suspicious comes around, they'll let you know.
00:34:37You can even ask for a favor or two while you're on vacation.
00:34:40Ask them to park one of their cars in your driveway, to pretend someone's at home.
00:34:44While you're at it, give them the key to your mailbox, and ask them to take your letters for you.
00:34:49You'll repay them when they go on vacation.
00:34:52Take a walk around your house, and put yourself in the mind of a burglar.
00:34:56What would you do to get in?
00:34:58There's a tree there that you can climb to reach the second floor.
00:35:01Or maybe it's just too easy to climb the pile of junk in your house.
00:35:04It's worth getting rid of both, to keep the top floors hard to reach.
00:35:08And no one will be tempted to break the top windows, and try to get in like that.
00:35:12If you've got a mail slot in your front door, be aware of mailbox phishing.
00:35:17It's where a burglar puts a pole straight through the mail slot, and fishes for keys.
00:35:22Or maybe even tries to unlock the door.
00:35:25Get a mailbox cage.
00:35:27This way, if they try to do this, they won't get far.
00:35:29Valuables inside the house are another thing.
00:35:32Keep them out of sight as much as you can.
00:35:35The safest thing you can do is get a safe.
00:35:38But otherwise, you can get decoy items, just in case burglars do get in your house.
00:35:43Keep a few fake gold bracelets next to your bedside table.
00:35:47They'll think they've scored big time, when, in fact, they're going home empty-handed.
00:35:52If you've always wanted a pet, now's the time to get one.
00:35:55Make sure it has a cozy place to sleep outside.
00:35:58And, as a thank you, it's going to protect your house.
00:36:01As soon as it hears someone step foot in the yard, it'll warn you by barking.
00:36:05Not only that, but it'll wake up the entire neighborhood, too.
00:36:09Which will bring even more attention to what's happening.
00:36:12Don't ever put up a calendar, or all of this will be for nothing.
00:36:16Say, a burglar comes out the back, and just looks through the window.
00:36:20He'll think, oh, that's a good idea.
00:36:22Say, a burglar comes out the back, and just looks through the window.
00:36:26If they spot a calendar with the exact dates you're going to be away,
00:36:30none of these tricks will work, because they'll know better than to fall for them.
00:36:34And, as a last resort, you can get a panic button, and keep it next to you when you sleep.
00:36:39You can program it to call the authorities with the press of a button.
00:36:43With that, you'll have alerted them that your house is being invaded.
00:36:49Wait, can you hear that?
00:36:50Sounds like someone's knocking on your door, and you aren't expecting anyone.
00:36:55Well, maybe that's just your neighbor come to ask for some garden tools again.
00:36:59You get up to go downstairs, but then you hear the noise of metal scratching in the keyhole.
00:37:05You stop, frozen in fear.
00:37:08Seconds later, you can hear the door clicking.
00:37:11The problem is that you live alone.
00:37:13First, let's make sure there really is someone in the house.
00:37:17But you should be very quiet in case there's a burglar.
00:37:20Look outside the house to search for traces.
00:37:23Can you see anything suspicious?
00:37:25Is there an unknown vehicle close to your house?
00:37:28Maybe you can spot some footsteps or a broken window.
00:37:31Was the fence gate open?
00:37:33There might also be hints inside the house.
00:37:36But be careful if you're looking for them.
00:37:38Make sure you can't be seen.
00:37:40Maybe there's some lights off that are usually on.
00:37:43Or maybe there's some mud on the floor that wasn't there before.
00:37:46Listen carefully to the sounds.
00:37:48Maybe you can hear some footsteps or movement, or the creak of a door.
00:37:53Wait, did you hear it?
00:37:55Looks like someone bumped into your tea table.
00:37:58Okay, it looks like there really is someone in your house.
00:38:01So your next step is to try to get out of the house to be safe.
00:38:05If it's possible, leave altogether.
00:38:08Both the front door or the back door, or even a window works.
00:38:12If it's a bit risky, you might want to try and escape.
00:38:15An injury is nothing compared with your life.
00:38:18If escaping is not an option, then lock yourself somewhere.
00:38:23Bedrooms are usually the first rooms burglars check,
00:38:26because that's where most people keep their valuables.
00:38:29So it's better to stay away from them.
00:38:31Still, if there's no other way, bedrooms better than nothing.
00:38:35Lock it and pretend you're asleep.
00:38:37But if you can, then better hide somewhere else.
00:38:41The bathroom is a great choice, because it's usually not of interest to burglars.
00:38:45Now, stay quiet.
00:38:48The burglar probably won't spend more than 10 minutes in your house.
00:38:51If the intruder doesn't find you're inside, you'll avoid confrontation.
00:38:56The most important thing is you staying safe.
00:38:59So don't move or make any noise.
00:39:01As soon as you're safe and hidden, call the police immediately.
00:39:05Remember, when calling them, always give your location first.
00:39:09In case something happens and you're not able to finish your conversation,
00:39:12at least they'll know where to go.
00:39:15If you can do it without being noticed, try to study the intruder as carefully as you can.
00:39:21Make sure to remember their height, body type, the way of walking,
00:39:25hair color, race, gender, age, and any other specific details you might notice.
00:39:31Anything you can spot will be helpful.
00:39:33If you can look outside and see the vehicle,
00:39:36remember its brand, color, and the license plate number.
00:39:40Then, wait again.
00:39:42Don't freeze and never leave the place you've chosen
00:39:45until the burglar leaves or the authorities arrive and help you out.
00:39:49But burglars don't go to any random house.
00:39:52They don't want to be noticed.
00:39:54So they choose their target very carefully.
00:39:57And you can make it so they don't pick yours.
00:40:00Make your house an open space.
00:40:02The greenery makes the house harder to observe,
00:40:05so burglars pick those houses that have the most of it.
00:40:08Make sure to trim all the shrubbery that hides windows and doors.
00:40:12Turn on the lights as soon as it's dark every day of the year.
00:40:16Illuminate everything – the porches, the driveway, the yard,
00:40:20both the front and the backyard.
00:40:22First, it makes the surroundings more visible,
00:40:24and burglars will prefer to stay away.
00:40:27Second, it makes an impression that there's someone home,
00:40:30and they don't want anyone to be there when they break in.
00:40:33Lock all the doors and windows.
00:40:36People forget to close their bathroom window,
00:40:38and burglars know it very well.
00:40:40There should never be a way in.
00:40:42Don't leave any secret way to enter the house
00:40:45in case you forget your keys.
00:40:47If you know about such a way, so do burglars.
00:40:50If you have any trees too close to your house,
00:40:53cut the branches so it's not possible to climb it
00:40:56and get into any of the windows.
00:40:58Keep all of your tools and store ladders in a locked garage.
00:41:02Don't ever keep them lying around when you don't use them,
00:41:05because they can all be used to break into your house.
00:41:08Don't have any spare keys hidden in random places outside the house.
00:41:12Better give one to a neighbor you trust.
00:41:15When you move into a new house or apartment,
00:41:18change the locks if possible.
00:41:20Make sure that your doors look modern and reliable.
00:41:23Old and bad doors that are easy to crack attract burglars.
00:41:27Don't throw away copies of documents
00:41:30or unnecessary checks just like that.
00:41:32Burglars can check your trash to learn more about you.
00:41:36So, shred documents into itty-bitty pieces
00:41:39before you throw them away.
00:41:40Don't leave boxes from a new plasma TV,
00:41:43expensive phone, laptop, or gold watch near your house.
00:41:47Don't show anybody that you're well-off.
00:41:50Make sure that the house number is clearly displayed
00:41:53and can be easily noticed.
00:41:55This way, the authorities or any other help
00:41:57will be able to find your house way faster.
00:42:00Even if you have security cameras installed,
00:42:03they don't guarantee that your house won't become a target.
00:42:06The cameras are helpful when finding the robber
00:42:08after everything's happened,
00:42:10but they don't prevent any action.
00:42:12Many robberies happen when people are away for some holiday.
00:42:16So, the burglars shouldn't find out
00:42:18you're not going to be home for a long time.
00:42:20Whenever you leave, make it look like you're actually home.
00:42:23Tell your neighbors you're leaving.
00:42:25Ask them to keep an eye out on your house
00:42:27and check it from time to time.
00:42:29To check if there's someone currently living in the house,
00:42:32burglars often check the mail.
00:42:34If the mailbox is full,
00:42:35it means there's no one living there right now.
00:42:38Ask your neighbor to collect the mail for you
00:42:40and clean the porch from ads and newspapers.
00:42:43Burglars may also leave marks on your house.
00:42:46For example, they can put a thin strip
00:42:49cut from a plastic bottle into the doorway.
00:42:51If it stays on the door for one or two days,
00:42:54this tells the burglar that there is no one at home.
00:42:57So, ask your neighbor to check these things out too.
00:43:00Ask them to park their car occasionally
00:43:02in front of your house for a while.
00:43:03This will give an impression that you have visitors.
00:43:06Still, if the house stands quiet for days,
00:43:09it's obvious there's no one living there currently.
00:43:12You can set up a timer for lights, radio, or TV
00:43:15so it works a couple of hours a day.
00:43:18If you're leaving for a long time,
00:43:20make arrangements so that your grass is cut and watered
00:43:23or the snow in front of your house is shoveled.
00:43:26It's a good idea not to post photos
00:43:29from your vacation while you're there.
00:43:30Burglars use social media, and they do their research.
00:43:33It's dangerous even if you have a private account,
00:43:36because burglars can collaborate with tech-savvy criminals.
00:43:39They would break into the accounts of rich people,
00:43:42find out when they were going on vacation,
00:43:44and inform the burglars about it.
00:43:46But before someone breaks into your house,
00:43:49they watch it for a while.
00:43:51They want to know when you're home and when you're not.
00:43:54If you start getting many random calls,
00:43:57it might be a sign that they checked your house.
00:44:00What time of the day you're out.
00:44:03If the light sensors start malfunctioning,
00:44:05check immediately if everything's alright.
00:44:08This doesn't always mean there are problems with electricity.
00:44:11Burglars may cut the wiring.
00:44:13Watch out for doors.
00:44:15If you notice scratches on the lock
00:44:17or it's becoming harder for you to open the door with your key,
00:44:20it might mean that someone tried to break into your house.
00:44:23Change the locks immediately.
00:44:26A break-in starts with a knock on the door.
00:44:28If you happen to be home at the time,
00:44:30it's important to learn how to answer it to scare them away.
00:44:33Always pretend like you're not home alone.
00:44:36You can call out something like,
00:44:38Can anyone answer the door, please?
00:44:40Teach your kids that they should never answer the door
00:44:43or open it to anyone unsupervised.
00:44:48Did you know that every 15 seconds,
00:44:51a home burglary occurs in the United States?
00:44:54This means that approximately 4,800 burglaries happen every day,
00:44:59and the police can only solve 13% of all the reported cases.
00:45:04So yeah, home security is nothing to be joked about,
00:45:07and so I won't.
00:45:09But still, don't worry.
00:45:11It's not like you need to turn your house into a fortress to feel safe.
00:45:14There are a great number of things you can do
00:45:16to keep the bad people out of your house
00:45:19and keep your valuables safe without breaking the bank.
00:45:23First things first,
00:45:25homes without a security system
00:45:26are 300% more likely to be broken into and burglarized,
00:45:31so you should definitely consider setting up one.
00:45:34However, there are many different types of security systems out there.
00:45:38That's why it can get overwhelming to choose the best one
00:45:41for your specific needs, desired level of protection, and budget.
00:45:45Yet again, it all comes down to two options,
00:45:48professional installations and DIY installations.
00:45:52Let's go through both of them together.
00:45:53Professional installed systems require professional monitoring
00:45:57and usually have contracts that are likely long-term.
00:46:00Professional systems come with fees.
00:46:03However, companies usually require lower upfront equipment costs
00:46:07since they will spread the costs throughout the course of your contract.
00:46:11Once you decide on a professional installation,
00:46:14the company will first schedule an appointment
00:46:16with one of their experienced technicians
00:46:18who can conduct a security assessment
00:46:20and explain all your options to you.
00:46:23And as long as your contract is valid,
00:46:26you can report any problems you have with the system to them
00:46:29so they can make sure the equipment works correctly.
00:46:32All in all, you should pick professionally installed security systems
00:46:36if you want to put up your feet and relax
00:46:39instead of watching long hours of tutorial videos
00:46:42or reading pages of manuals.
00:46:44Still, professionally installed security systems
00:46:47may not work for you,
00:46:49especially if you're a renter due to the contract commitment conditions.
00:46:51Or maybe you're not a renter,
00:46:54but you simply have budget limitations.
00:46:56That's where DIY installations come in handy.
00:47:00The greatest thing about DIY systems
00:47:03is that while the average monitoring price
00:47:05is around $50 per month on professionally installed systems,
00:47:09it is around $28 a month on DIY ones.
00:47:12Plus, there are no installation fees with DIY systems either.
00:47:16Yet again, you should expect higher upfront equipment costs
00:47:19if you're going to pick this option.
00:47:22And there's also the fact that DIY home security systems
00:47:25come with the risks of improper equipment placement
00:47:28and missing security vulnerabilities a pro would catch.
00:47:31At the end of the day,
00:47:33the most important thing you need to do
00:47:35before choosing a system
00:47:37is evaluate the needs of your neighborhood
00:47:39as well as your house.
00:47:41Did you know that 34% of burglars
00:47:45simply use the front door when breaking into a home?
00:47:47That means if your door is not strong and secure enough,
00:47:51you're basically inviting the burglars in.
00:47:54So setting up security systems is not enough.
00:47:57You need to inspect all your exterior doors too.
00:48:00Make sure the door frames are strong
00:48:02and the hinges are protected.
00:48:04You can always use door reinforcement kits
00:48:06to add extra protection.
00:48:08If your door has a mail slot,
00:48:10don't forget to check if it's possible
00:48:12for someone to reach through it to unlock the door.
00:48:14When moving into a house or an apartment
00:48:16that was previously occupied by someone else,
00:48:19change the door locks.
00:48:21This is the easiest way to ensure
00:48:23that no stranger can just walk into your house
00:48:26using the keys.
00:48:28One other way to boost security for your door
00:48:30is to use wireless doorbell cameras.
00:48:33This one from Amazon is extremely user-friendly.
00:48:36It's 100% wireless,
00:48:38it has a built-in rechargeable battery
00:48:40that can last 1-2 months,
00:48:42so you won't have to charge the door
00:48:44too often.
00:48:46You can track the battery situation
00:48:48from the phone app.
00:48:50It also has motion detection technology
00:48:52and super night vision.
00:48:54And you don't need to worry about the weather conditions
00:48:56because it's also waterproof.
00:48:58By the way,
00:49:00don't forget about the sliding glass doors.
00:49:02You can use a window bar or dowel in the track
00:49:04to keep them from being forced open.
00:49:06Or you can add a door sensor
00:49:08or glass break sensor
00:49:10to get alerted if and when
00:49:12someone is tampering with them.
00:49:14Let's get to the basics of home security now.
00:49:16The percentage of burglars
00:49:18entering a home through a window
00:49:20is as high as 23%.
00:49:22The main reason for that is because
00:49:24most of the time,
00:49:26people forget to lock their windows.
00:49:28Yet again,
00:49:30burglars can always break the glass.
00:49:32If you don't want that to happen,
00:49:34you can try reinforcing the glass
00:49:36with window security film,
00:49:38adding window bars,
00:49:40or installing window sensors.
00:49:42If none of that is possible,
00:49:44you can use a window sensor
00:49:46to discourage burglars
00:49:48from choosing your house to break in.
00:49:50What's the difference
00:49:52between an actor and a burglar?
00:49:54Burglars don't like to be in the spotlight.
00:49:56That's why having outdoor lighting
00:49:58is to your advantage.
00:50:00Lights should be placed
00:50:02around your front and back yards,
00:50:04along pathways,
00:50:06and near the garage.
00:50:08To make your outdoor security lights
00:50:10more effective,
00:50:12you can use motion-activated ones.
00:50:14But that doesn't mean
00:50:16you won't have any light
00:50:18once the clouds cover the sky.
00:50:20It's able to run 4-5 nights
00:50:22on rainy days.
00:50:24Also, don't allow the burglars
00:50:26to play hide-and-seek.
00:50:28While trees and shrubs
00:50:30may make your home look more beautiful,
00:50:32they also provide a convenient
00:50:34hiding spot for burglars.
00:50:36That's why you should trim down
00:50:38trees and plants,
00:50:40at least the ones close to your house
00:50:42that could be used for cover.
00:50:44That way, burglars don't have
00:50:46a hiding spot to wait for you
00:50:48to leave your home.
00:50:50The same thing goes for any
00:50:52locked gates, sheds,
00:50:54or other outdoor buildings you have.
00:50:56Make sure those places are locked.
00:50:58Burglars can use stools and ladders
00:51:00to climb in from the windows too,
00:51:02so don't tempt them
00:51:04by leaving one outside.
00:51:06This one goes without saying,
00:51:08but I will anyway.
00:51:10Lock the garage.
00:51:12Even if there's no access
00:51:14stored in there
00:51:16that burglars might be interested in.
00:51:18It's also wise to store
00:51:20your garage door opener
00:51:22inside your house
00:51:24rather than leave it in your car.
00:51:26This way, you'll be preventing
00:51:28burglars from easily taking it.
00:51:30If you use a security code
00:51:32to open your garage,
00:51:34then keep it confidential
00:51:36and avoid entering it
00:51:38in front of other people,
00:51:40including neighbors.
00:51:42Some neighbors…
00:51:44These days, not just burglars
00:51:46but porch pirates,
00:51:48aka package thieves,
00:51:50are a big problem too.
00:51:52Last year, almost 1 in 7 Americans
00:51:54fell victim to them.
00:51:56This is where security cameras
00:51:58prove to be useful.
00:52:00First of all, they work as a deterrent,
00:52:02and secondly, if someone were to
00:52:04really steal your package,
00:52:06you'd be able to identify them
00:52:08thanks to the security footage.
00:52:10If you can't spare some money
00:52:12to get a good security camera
00:52:14then they will help make your home
00:52:16look more secure than it actually is.
00:52:18This one is worth considering
00:52:20if you're searching the market.
00:52:22It contains a flashing light
00:52:24which makes it look as realistic
00:52:26as it gets.
00:52:28Last but not least,
00:52:30having a safe wouldn't hurt.
00:52:32And don't worry,
00:52:34it doesn't have to be one of those
00:52:36uncrackable giant titanium ones
00:52:38in the heist movies,
00:52:40like Ocean's 23.
00:52:42Burglars may still be able
00:52:44to break into your home
00:52:46and make sure your valuables
00:52:48are protected at all times.
00:52:50You can hide all things important
00:52:52from your expensive jewelry
00:52:54to your vital documents in there
00:52:56just to be extra safe.
00:52:58If you're going to get yourself one,
00:53:00make sure it is fire-resistant,
00:53:02waterproof, and heavy enough
00:53:04that a thief can't pick it up
00:53:06and walk away with it.
00:53:08As they say,
00:53:10better safe than sorry.
00:53:12In the US,
00:53:14burglars spend 10 seconds
00:53:16and 12 minutes to grab
00:53:18everything they need
00:53:20and get out of there
00:53:22before they get caught.
00:53:24You've probably heard that
00:53:26when a burglar decides
00:53:28which house to target,
00:53:30they start by casing it.
00:53:32This means they watch the owners,
00:53:34find out information
00:53:36about their routine,
00:53:38and determine the best time
00:53:40to enter their home.
00:53:42One of the tricks thieves use
00:53:44is to use a cookie.
00:53:46Chances are,
00:53:48you'll find yourself face-to-face
00:53:50with a crushed cookie.
00:53:52If that's the case,
00:53:54it's your clue that something
00:53:56has gone terribly wrong.
00:53:58This is a pretty effective tool
00:54:00burglars use to find out
00:54:02if you've left on a trip
00:54:04or when exactly you come home
00:54:06every day.
00:54:08A cookie is such an innocent
00:54:10little thing that people
00:54:12don't usually give it much thought.
00:54:14They just make it crumble
00:54:16and automatically reveal
00:54:18all your secrets to burglars.
00:54:20They know for sure
00:54:22if the house is lived in
00:54:24and can also figure out
00:54:26the homeowner's schedule.
00:54:28Things get even worse
00:54:30if you're away for a while.
00:54:32The cookie under the doormat
00:54:34remains intact,
00:54:36thus alerting criminals
00:54:38that the house is perfect
00:54:40for a break-in.
00:54:42To decrease your chances
00:54:44of burglary,
00:54:46check your location plans.
00:54:48If you're eager to share
00:54:50your amazing photos from the beach,
00:54:52do it after you get back home.
00:54:54Check your privacy settings
00:54:56every time you post something
00:54:58when you're away from home.
00:55:00It's all too simple
00:55:02for a thief to figure out
00:55:04that your house is empty
00:55:06at the moment
00:55:08if you're ranting online
00:55:10about how crowded
00:55:12these stores are on Black Friday.
00:55:14Or call you if they notice
00:55:16anything suspicious going on
00:55:18around your house.
00:55:20You can do the same for them
00:55:22next time they go on a trip.
00:55:24Create the impression
00:55:26that there's somebody at home
00:55:28even when you're away.
00:55:30Use the TV and radio.
00:55:32Leave them on when you're away.
00:55:34The sound of voices
00:55:36will most likely scare
00:55:38burglars away,
00:55:40even if that cookie
00:55:42is still whole.
00:55:44Ask your neighbor,
00:55:46a relative,
00:55:48or a friend
00:55:50to stop by regularly
00:55:52and pick it all up.
00:55:54If there's nobody
00:55:56who can do you this favor,
00:55:58place your mail on hold.
00:56:00You can do this
00:56:02at your local post office.
00:56:04Another thing that can give away
00:56:06your prolonged absence
00:56:08is an unkempt lawn
00:56:10with tall grass.
00:56:12Before going away,
00:56:14there's a wonderful time
00:56:16of the year.
00:56:18Everyone's leaving their homes
00:56:20to go visit their families,
00:56:22and you are one of those people.
00:56:24You take a final look
00:56:26around your house
00:56:28before you head out,
00:56:30lock your door,
00:56:32and leave.
00:56:34But wait!
00:56:36I have an important warning
00:56:38for you.
00:56:40Did you know that statistically
00:56:42most burglaries happen
00:56:44by the end of November
00:56:46or the beginning of December?
00:56:48Your house starts to fill
00:56:50with brand new presents.
00:56:52Maybe you have bought
00:56:54an expensive necklace
00:56:56for your mother,
00:56:58the latest tech gadget
00:57:00for your father,
00:57:02and a bike for your nephew.
00:57:04These make a small fortune,
00:57:06wouldn't you agree?
00:57:08I can already see
00:57:10the dollar signs
00:57:12in the burglar's eyes.
00:57:14Get out quickly
00:57:16before you come home from work.
00:57:18Weekend evenings are also
00:57:20when the most burglaries
00:57:22are reported.
00:57:24And when you're out
00:57:26at parties or dinners,
00:57:28burglars know they can
00:57:30take their time
00:57:32since it's likely
00:57:34you will be out
00:57:36until late hours.
00:57:38And if you're away,
00:57:40then there's no escaping
00:57:42your fate.
00:57:45First things first,
00:57:47we always tend to place
00:57:49trees by the window, right?
00:57:51It makes everything feel cozier
00:57:53and there's a certain charm
00:57:55to displaying your wonderfully
00:57:57decorated tree to the people
00:57:59who pass by your street.
00:58:01Well, that's actually
00:58:03a big no-no if you want
00:58:05to keep your place safe.
00:58:07Also, it's not advised
00:58:09to keep your gifts
00:58:11under the tree as well
00:58:12until it's finally time
00:58:14to open them
00:58:16because this will allow
00:58:18burglars to quickly locate
00:58:20these items of value.
00:58:22Seeing the tree is already
00:58:24set from your window
00:58:26might get them to start
00:58:28watching over your house
00:58:30as they wait for you to leave
00:58:32so they can finally break in.
00:58:34Whether you're going to be
00:58:36at home for the holidays
00:58:38or you're going to be away,
00:58:40it will always be
00:58:42turned on during the hours
00:58:44you would normally be home
00:58:46so that your place
00:58:48doesn't appear empty.
00:58:50The timer will also
00:58:52come in handy if you're
00:58:54just going to visit a place
00:58:56for only a few hours.
00:58:58If you're not able
00:59:00to get a timer,
00:59:02you can always leave
00:59:04some lights on
00:59:06to make the house
00:59:08seem somehow occupied.
00:59:10Burglars might eventually
00:59:12break in,
00:59:14but remember,
00:59:16the cost of leaving
00:59:18the lights on
00:59:20will always be lower
00:59:22than the cost of a break in.
00:59:24On a related note,
00:59:26if you're one of those
00:59:28people who power their
00:59:30outdoor lights with
00:59:32extensions that go
00:59:34through the windows
00:59:36and connect to the
00:59:38inside of the house,
00:59:40you might want to
00:59:42turn off the lights.
00:59:44You may be inclined
00:59:46to post photos of your
00:59:48parties, dinners,
00:59:50and gatherings on social
00:59:52media to show your new
00:59:54dress or just how much
00:59:56fun you're having to
00:59:58your followers,
01:00:00but I advise you
01:00:02not to do that.
01:00:04At least wait until
01:00:06the event is over
01:00:08and you're home,
01:00:10because that would
01:00:12be a waste of time.
01:00:14Even if your social
01:00:16media accounts are
01:00:18set to private,
01:00:20sharing your location,
01:00:22status, and so on
01:00:24might still cause you
01:00:26trouble, because
01:00:28what if the burglar
01:00:30is also a hacker?
01:00:32Having a hidden
01:00:34spare key outside
01:00:36your house comes
01:00:38with benefits when
01:00:40you forget yours at
01:00:42the usual places people
01:00:44hide their keys,
01:00:46they will be able
01:00:48to find them.
01:00:50What you can do
01:00:52instead is to give
01:00:54them to a trusted
01:00:56neighbor or a friend
01:00:58to keep until you're
01:01:00back and ask them
01:01:02to check your house
01:01:04from time to time,
01:01:06or better, every day.
01:01:08And if you can
01:01:10ask that neighbor
01:01:12especially during the holidays
01:01:14when the delivery
01:01:16companies get super busy.
01:01:18And if they arrive
01:01:20when you're not home,
01:01:22there's a good chance
01:01:24that the delivery person
01:01:26will just leave them
01:01:28by your door.
01:01:30When the packages
01:01:32and letters keep
01:01:34building up on your
01:01:36porch, they will
01:01:38not only help
01:01:40burglars understand
01:01:42what's going on
01:01:44in your house,
01:01:46but they will
01:01:48also be able to
01:01:50keep track of
01:01:52what's going on
01:01:54in your house.
01:01:56This is a great way
01:01:58to keep track of
01:02:00what's going on
01:02:02in your house.
01:02:04If you have
01:02:06any questions
01:02:08or concerns
01:02:10about your house,
01:02:12you can call
01:02:14the police
01:02:16and we'll be able
01:02:18to show pictures
01:02:20to the police,
01:02:22which in return
01:02:24will make it easier
01:02:26for them to locate
01:02:28the stolen items.
01:02:30Burglars often look
01:02:32around to try
01:02:34and find a ladder,
01:02:36any garden equipment
01:02:38or any store tool
01:02:40that will help them
01:02:42or climb to windows.
01:02:44And while they do that,
01:02:46someone can notice
01:02:48their suspicious activity
01:02:50and make them run away
01:02:52without completing their crime.
01:02:54Even if you're living
01:02:56in a place with hot weather,
01:02:58never ever leave windows open
01:03:00in rooms that you're not using,
01:03:02even if you're at home.
01:03:04And make sure they're
01:03:06all closed tight
01:03:08before leaving the house.
01:03:10You can always use
01:03:12a trash bin.
01:03:14If you don't have any
01:03:16expensive presents,
01:03:18it's important that you
01:03:20don't pile the boxes
01:03:22of your expensive presents
01:03:24outside your house
01:03:26near the trash bin.
01:03:28If you do,
01:03:30the burglars will not only
01:03:32learn what you've received,
01:03:34but will also get
01:03:36tempted to break in,
01:03:38especially if they see
01:03:40you have an item
01:03:42or you can also burn them
01:03:44in the fireplace
01:03:46to keep the house cozy
01:03:48and safe.
01:03:50Last but not least,
01:03:52it's always beneficial
01:03:54to have an intruder alarm
01:03:56no matter what time of year it is.
01:03:58And just having it
01:04:00is not enough.
01:04:02You have to remember
01:04:04to use it.
01:04:06Unfortunately,
01:04:08many people who have an alarm
01:04:10don't bother setting it
01:04:12as well as whenever you come in
01:04:14since there's always a chance
01:04:16that burglars might break in
01:04:18while you're sleeping in your bed too.
01:04:20So, have you checked
01:04:22all the precautions off your list?
01:04:24Good! Then happy and safe holidays.
01:04:29Let's crack a burglar's code.
01:04:31Tape on the door handle
01:04:33or a slice of cheese
01:04:35on the car's hood
01:04:37and many more can be signs
01:04:39that you're being watched
01:04:40Burglars don't just pick a house
01:04:42randomly and rob it.
01:04:44They'll often monitor the home
01:04:46before they take action.
01:04:48They want to know more about
01:04:50the house and its security.
01:04:52They leave markings on the home,
01:04:54garage door, post box
01:04:56or storage unit.
01:04:58Get to know these markings
01:05:00and know what they symbolize
01:05:02and you'll be able to better
01:05:04protect your home
01:05:06from the bad guys.
01:05:08If you see a circle drawn,
01:05:10yet a barred circle
01:05:12means to avoid entry.
01:05:14Maybe the home has high-tech alarms,
01:05:16CCTV cameras or a dog.
01:05:18Ladder-like lines
01:05:20means there are valuables
01:05:22visible in the home
01:05:24so there are items in the house
01:05:26worth stealing.
01:05:28If someone sprays the letter M
01:05:30in the garbage,
01:05:32that means empty in the morning
01:05:34and N refers to empty at night.
01:05:36Police forces have issued
01:05:38warnings about the code
01:05:40about pipelines and so on.
01:05:43If you see some evidence
01:05:45of key bumping,
01:05:47don't enter the house.
01:05:49Key bumping is a technique
01:05:51where burglars use a similar key
01:05:53made with a heavier metal
01:05:55than the pins
01:05:57to file down the pins
01:05:59on the inside of the lock.
01:06:01Plus, victims may encounter
01:06:03some problems while claiming
01:06:05insurance in such cases
01:06:07because this technique
01:06:08may lead to the insurance company.
01:06:10Sounds like a nightmare!
01:06:12Lock picking is a less
01:06:14forceful technique.
01:06:16This one will leave marks
01:06:18on the doorknob
01:06:20such as light scratches
01:06:22around the lock
01:06:24but the real signs
01:06:26will be found on the inside
01:06:28of the lock on the pins.
01:06:30They'll have dents.
01:06:32Heavy scrapes or marks
01:06:34on your doorknob
01:06:36can also indicate
01:06:38that you're not careful.
01:06:40Be careful when you get inside.
01:06:42Thieves may stick a tape
01:06:44and it's usually a see-through one
01:06:46on the door handle.
01:06:48Suppose the tape is still there
01:06:50a day or so later.
01:06:52The squatters believe
01:06:54that the owner is away
01:06:56since the door hasn't been used.
01:06:58This strategy has become
01:07:00alarmingly prominent in Dublin.
01:07:02The police warned people
01:07:04to be vigilant
01:07:06and remove any tape
01:07:08that's considered to steal.
01:07:10Supposedly, red chalk marks
01:07:12are for large dogs
01:07:14and yellow and pink marks
01:07:16refer to medium and small dogs.
01:07:18The police advise dog owners
01:07:20to keep their eyes open
01:07:22around their properties
01:07:24and report any such instances
01:07:26to the police.
01:07:28Lastly, pay extra attention
01:07:30when walking their pets.
01:07:32One of the keys
01:07:34to being safe at a house
01:07:36is having good security
01:07:38but it may be a sign
01:07:40of a burglar attempt.
01:07:42This might be
01:07:44because of a tactic
01:07:46called the vulnerability method.
01:07:48Thieves make the door lock
01:07:50weaker with time.
01:07:52They use tools or objects
01:07:54to deteriorate the lock
01:07:56without leaving any traces.
01:07:58You may think your lock is old
01:08:00and simply postpone
01:08:02calling a locksmith
01:08:04but that would be
01:08:06a huge mistake.
01:08:08This is usually the first sign
01:08:10of an attempted break-in
01:08:12so this is probably
01:08:14the most important warning sign
01:08:16you should take into consideration.
01:08:18Even security door locks
01:08:20are vulnerable to break-ins.
01:08:22Did you know that in Churchill, Canada
01:08:24locals keep their car doors unlocked?
01:08:26They don't do this
01:08:28to invite the thieves
01:08:30but to survive a potential polar bear attack.
01:08:32The town has the largest number
01:08:34of polar bears in the world.
01:08:36Imagine a resident
01:08:38whose car is nearby.
01:08:40They can quickly shelter
01:08:42inside that car.
01:08:44How about learning some safety tips
01:08:46to avoid purse snatching?
01:08:48Firstly, don't carry a shoulder bag
01:08:50over your shoulder.
01:08:52I know, I know,
01:08:54it's what the bag is designed for
01:08:56but this makes it easier
01:08:58for a thief to grab your bag.
01:09:00For example,
01:09:02carrying a small clutch-type handbag
01:09:04underneath your arm is safer.
01:09:06Shopping with someone else
01:09:08is a good idea
01:09:10if you don't know what you'll possibly need
01:09:12for all your credit cards
01:09:14in the same purse.
01:09:16Carry only what you need for the day.
01:09:18You might think it's just for a sec
01:09:20but don't leave your purse
01:09:22in shopping carts or on counters.
01:09:24And there's the matter of scams.
01:09:26When you believe you can't be scammed
01:09:28you might let yourself
01:09:30be more vulnerable to scammers.
01:09:32Scams target everyone
01:09:34from all backgrounds,
01:09:36ages and incomes.
01:09:38They hook you
01:09:40to either give them your money
01:09:42or personal details.
01:09:44How to be scam-proof?
01:09:46Firstly, keep in mind
01:09:48that if it looks too good to be true
01:09:50it probably is.
01:09:52Secondly, don't respond to calls
01:09:54about your computer
01:09:56asking for remote access
01:09:58even if they mention a well-known company.
01:10:00Scammers will often ask you
01:10:02to turn on your computer
01:10:04to fix a problem
01:10:06or install a free upgrade.
01:10:08Scammers will often ask you
01:10:10to use an unusual payment method
01:10:12like a pre-loaded debit card,
01:10:14gift card or iTunes card.
01:10:17A carjacker and a slice of cheese.
01:10:20What connection can there be?
01:10:22Imagine you walk to your car
01:10:24and see melted cheese on the engine cap.
01:10:26You initially thought
01:10:28that it was probably some kind of a prank
01:10:30so you begin to clean the cheese.
01:10:32Naturally, it takes ages under the hot sun.
01:10:34Pay attention to your surroundings.
01:10:36Someone might be watching you
01:10:38from a distance
01:10:40and waiting for the right time.
01:10:42They can just jump into your car
01:10:44and run away while you're not looking
01:10:46at the driver's door,
01:10:48busy cleaning the cheese
01:10:50near the passenger side.
01:10:52Did you know that you might have
01:10:54an extra key in your car?
01:10:56Some cars have valet keys
01:10:58hidden under the owner's manual
01:11:00or in the tool kit in the trunk.
01:11:02If your car has that spare pair,
01:11:04take it out immediately.
01:11:06If you know where it is,
01:11:08car thieves know where to look.
01:11:10For example,
01:11:12some people hide the extra key
01:11:14under the bumper or beneath the floor mat.
01:11:16Thieves routinely check those places as well.
01:11:19Speaking of car theft,
01:11:21now might be a good time
01:11:23to talk about the habits
01:11:25and strategies of car burglars.
01:11:27They don't really go for wide open
01:11:29and visible locations
01:11:31like in front of houses and driveways.
01:11:33Dark and secluded places
01:11:35such as apartment buildings,
01:11:36parking garages appeal to them
01:11:38because it's quieter.
01:11:40He could hear if somebody was coming.
01:11:42Have you heard of
01:11:44Vehicle Identification Number,
01:11:46aka VIN?
01:11:48This is a unique number
01:11:50for every car out there.
01:11:52You can engrave the VIN
01:11:54on your car windows.
01:11:56This makes your car less valuable
01:11:58on the black market for its parts.
01:12:00Plus, changing the car windows
01:12:02costs quite a lot,
01:12:04so crooks try to avoid such cars.
01:12:06So, do you have some
01:12:08real-life stories about all these?
01:12:36If you're in a hurry
01:12:38and they accuse you
01:12:40of breaking the phone,
01:12:42they demand money
01:12:44and behave aggressively.
01:12:46In such a situation,
01:12:48it's better not to panic
01:12:50and not be provoked.
01:12:52Calmly leave.
01:12:54Make it clear
01:12:56that you won't fall for this.
01:12:58And if they behave too aggressively,
01:13:00then call the police.
01:13:02You're walking down the street
01:13:04and a man or woman
01:13:06is a very rare specimen
01:13:08and is worth thousands of dollars.
01:13:10You take a photo of the coin
01:13:12and find out information about it
01:13:14on the Internet,
01:13:16and it turns out to be true.
01:13:18The coin is expensive.
01:13:20The homeless person
01:13:22can't sell it for that kind of money
01:13:24because no one will believe them.
01:13:26They offer to give the coin
01:13:28to you for a few hundred bucks.
01:13:30The offer seems profitable,
01:13:32but it's a hoax.
01:13:34The stranger offers you a fake
01:13:36and calls the police.
01:13:38This guy can trick other people too.
01:13:40Thieves can put an advertising flyer,
01:13:42a newspaper or a sticker
01:13:44on the door of your house or apartment.
01:13:46In the doorway,
01:13:48you can find a piece of paper
01:13:50or a thin strip from a plastic bottle.
01:13:52If you don't remove one of these items
01:13:54for a long time,
01:13:56then the thieves understand
01:13:58that you're not at home.
01:14:00This way, thieves mark buildings
01:14:02and apartments that are easy to get into.
01:14:04After all,
01:14:06if a flyer or bookmark
01:14:08hangs on the door for one or two days,
01:14:10it tells the thief that no one's home.
01:14:12Of course,
01:14:14these can be real advertising stickers,
01:14:16but you still don't need them.
01:14:18In addition to flyers,
01:14:20they may be strange labels
01:14:22on the house or apartment door,
01:14:24numbers, crosses or other symbols.
01:14:26This is how robbers mark houses
01:14:28they're about to break in.
01:14:30If you see such a sign,
01:14:32it's better to call the police.
01:14:34You're approaching your car
01:14:36calmly get into the car,
01:14:38look around and drive away
01:14:40from this place.
01:14:42Then when you have changed the location,
01:14:44you can safely take off the cloth.
01:14:46The fact is that the scammers
01:14:48tie the fabric on the wipers on purpose
01:14:50and as tightly as possible.
01:14:52While you're messing around with the shirt
01:14:54and try to take it off,
01:14:56they can get into your car and drive away
01:14:58or even jump you from behind.
01:15:00You arrive at the supermarket,
01:15:02stop in the parking lot
01:15:04and get out of the car.
01:15:06A neat and wealthy looking man
01:15:08comes out of there
01:15:10and asks you for some money for gas.
01:15:12He says that his phones run out of juice.
01:15:14He forgot his wallet at home
01:15:16and he urgently needs to refill his tank.
01:15:18He promises to send you the money
01:15:20as soon as he gets to the phone.
01:15:22Don't give him money, he's a fraud.
01:15:24It might seem he really needs help
01:15:26and will definitely return the money
01:15:28because he looks like an honest
01:15:30and decent person,
01:15:32but most likely his car is rented
01:15:34and his clothes are cheap.
01:15:36He asks to borrow money for the gas
01:15:38from different drivers,
01:15:40counting on their sympathy.
01:15:42By the end of the day,
01:15:44he accumulates a large amount
01:15:46and doesn't return it.
01:15:48You walk down the street
01:15:50and see a beautiful coin
01:15:52or a phone lying on the ground.
01:15:54Don't pick it up,
01:15:56it's well glued to the asphalt.
01:15:58You will not be able to lift it
01:16:00on the first attempt.
01:16:02You will start trying to take the object
01:16:04off the ground
01:16:06to make it friendly
01:16:08during a house robbery
01:16:10or they add sleeping pills to dog food.
01:16:12In reality,
01:16:14everything is much more unpleasant.
01:16:16Thieves can steal your dog
01:16:18to make it easier to rob the house.
01:16:20Of course, if the dog is missing,
01:16:22it doesn't always mean
01:16:24someone wants to rob you.
01:16:26However, if this happens,
01:16:28then you need to be on your guard.
01:16:30Robbers and thieves
01:16:32spend a lot of time
01:16:34on social networks.
01:16:36How far away I am from my house?
01:16:38It's better to wait until you get home
01:16:40and only then upload the photos.
01:16:42Also, there are cases
01:16:44when thieves collaborate
01:16:46with mobile scammers.
01:16:48They got access to the social pages
01:16:50of some people to find out
01:16:52when they were going on vacation.
01:16:54Then, they reported the information
01:16:56to the real robbers.
01:16:58You're driving home from work
01:17:00and suddenly notice
01:17:02you're almost out of gas.
01:17:04That's weird because
01:17:06you're driving in a circle.
01:17:08Meanwhile, robbers can take things
01:17:10out of your house.
01:17:12They deliberately drain the fuel
01:17:14from your car so that you go
01:17:16to the gas station.
01:17:18They detain you and buy time
01:17:20to clean out your home.
01:17:22If you're sure that you refueled recently
01:17:24and the gas was drained from you,
01:17:26then you should call your neighbors
01:17:28and ask them to monitor
01:17:30your house or apartment.
01:17:32If you regularly use cleaning services
01:17:34for your house,
01:17:36they should warn you about it.
01:17:38If this didn't happen,
01:17:40check for yourself.
01:17:42Call and find out
01:17:44all about the new cleaner.
01:17:46If they have new information
01:17:48about the new employer,
01:17:50then probably the thief
01:17:52wants to get into your apartment
01:17:54and inspect it for valuables.
01:17:56Call the police
01:17:58and don't let the cleaner
01:18:00inside the house.
01:18:02Also, thieves can pretend
01:18:04to be plumbers, doctors
01:18:06who are preserving your house.
01:18:08Don't throw unnecessary documents
01:18:10in the trash.
01:18:12Scammers can check the trash cans.
01:18:14They can find payment receipts,
01:18:16some certificates.
01:18:18It doesn't mean anything to you,
01:18:20but a thief can get information
01:18:22about your ID, earnings,
01:18:24and insurance.
01:18:26Always chop up the documents
01:18:28you throw away.
01:18:30There are many fraudulent ways
01:18:32in which discarded documents
01:18:34can be used.
01:18:36Don't leave cardboard boxes
01:18:38from new TV,
01:18:40expensive phones,
01:18:42laptops,
01:18:44or gold watches in the trash can.
01:18:46There's no need to show
01:18:48that you're living well.
01:18:50The advice is not to throw out
01:18:52such garbage near your house.
01:18:54Also, you can cover the boxes
01:18:56with plastic bags
01:18:58so thieves can't see them.
01:19:00If you live in a private house
01:19:02and trees grow next to it,
01:19:04then cut off the branches
01:19:06and easily use them as a ladder.
01:19:08Also, thieves try to avoid houses
01:19:10with plants and flowers
01:19:12growing under the windows,
01:19:14especially if it's roses
01:19:16with thorns or cacti.
01:19:18You can put a
01:19:20Beware of Angry Dogs sticker
01:19:22on the door even if you don't have a pet.
01:19:24No one will want to enter inside.
01:19:26You can even attach
01:19:28a fake CCTV camera.
01:19:30It will also scare robbers away.
01:19:32To prevent a robbery,
01:19:34you can create an illusion
01:19:36in the house
01:19:38even if you have gone on vacation.
01:19:40No need to leave the TV
01:19:42or music on.
01:19:44You can set a special timer
01:19:46that will be turning on the TV
01:19:48for a while every day.
01:19:50There are also special light bulbs
01:19:52with a timer.
01:19:54Let them light up in the house
01:19:56every evening and night
01:19:58for 20 to 30 minutes
01:20:00while you're away.
01:20:02Thieves often look
01:20:04at filled mailboxes.
01:20:06If you're on vacation for a while,
01:20:08ask a neighbor to pull out your mail.
01:20:10Or you can go to the post office
01:20:12and ask not to deliver letters
01:20:14to your mailbox
01:20:16before your arrival.
01:20:18You park your car
01:20:20in a dark alley,
01:20:22lock it and leave it
01:20:24for just a couple of minutes
01:20:26to go grab a coffee.
01:20:28When you come back,
01:20:30your beloved vehicle
01:20:32is no longer there.
01:20:34A siren sounds.
01:20:36It's a warning screen
01:20:38and you can help it
01:20:40to never come true.
01:20:42First of all,
01:20:44you can install a steering wheel
01:20:46lock in your car.
01:20:48It can either be a long metal rod
01:20:50stretched over the steering wheel
01:20:52or a chain lock
01:20:54connected to the seat belt buckle.
01:20:56Both options are good
01:20:58to slow down the bad guys
01:21:00that might break into your vehicle.
01:21:02But don't make it 100% thief proof.
01:21:04The thieves can just cut
01:21:06to the chase.
01:21:08Criminals like to use gadgets
01:21:10that catch signals
01:21:12and help them steal cars
01:21:14without a key.
01:21:16For example,
01:21:18if the car is parked
01:21:20in a garage of a private house
01:21:22or under the windows
01:21:24of a multi-story building,
01:21:26the keys are accessible
01:21:28through the radio device.
01:21:30Thieves can easily intercept
01:21:32the signal and the owners
01:21:34of the car won't notice anything.
01:21:36Put the keys in foil
01:21:38to block the radio signals
01:21:40or keep them in a safe metal box.
01:21:42Park in areas
01:21:44that are well lit
01:21:46and have security cameras.
01:21:48Building entrances
01:21:50and parking lots
01:21:52are your best choice.
01:21:54An isolated garage
01:21:56isn't always the best idea
01:21:58because it could put you
01:22:00personally at risk.
01:22:02So if you do park in one of those,
01:22:04stay close to the attendant
01:22:06whenever you park.
01:22:08It will make it way harder
01:22:10for thieves to try to tow the auto
01:22:12with a tow truck.
01:22:14To steal a car,
01:22:16a criminal will have to make
01:22:18some extra maneuvers.
01:22:20It takes time and effort
01:22:22and can demotivate the bad guys.
01:22:24In many cases,
01:22:26it's not your car
01:22:28the bad guys are after.
01:22:30It's that shiny new laptop
01:22:32you dropped in the front seat
01:22:34or your designer purse
01:22:36that's leaking.
01:22:38So take an extra moment
01:22:40to hide your belongings
01:22:42in the trunk
01:22:44and your vehicle
01:22:46will be less tempting
01:22:48for criminals.
01:22:50Don't just jump out of the car
01:22:52even if it's literally
01:22:54for a moment to buy something.
01:22:56If you need to get out,
01:22:58always stop the engine first,
01:23:00close the windows
01:23:02and lock the doors.
01:23:04Storing your vehicle registration
01:23:06as soon as they get pulled over,
01:23:08your insurance information and VIN
01:23:10can help them get new keys
01:23:12to unlock the car no problem.
01:23:14If you aren't the only person
01:23:16using the car,
01:23:18find some secret place
01:23:20to hide the registration
01:23:22and only tell the people
01:23:24you trust 100% about it.
01:23:26You can also take a photo
01:23:28of your title registration
01:23:30and insurance information
01:23:32and store them on your smartphone.
01:23:34Another option
01:23:36is to cover windshields,
01:23:38windows and mirrors
01:23:40with a VIN number
01:23:42which is the identification number
01:23:44of the vehicle.
01:23:46This service won't cost you a lot
01:23:48but will demotivate the bad guys.
01:23:50They'll have to spend money
01:23:52to change the marked glass
01:23:54and they will think twice
01:23:56if they want to invest
01:23:58in your vehicle.
01:24:00You can also play spy
01:24:02and leave marks on different parts
01:24:04of the car with an invisible pen
01:24:06to track the vehicle
01:24:08if it gets stolen.
01:24:10If you know that you'll have to
01:24:12leave the car somewhere new
01:24:14and you don't feel like
01:24:16it's a safe place,
01:24:18hide an old switched-on phone
01:24:20or tablet in it.
01:24:22Make sure you have a way
01:24:24to track it.
01:24:26Then the Find My Phone feature
01:24:28will help you locate the phone
01:24:30and the car in a matter of seconds.
01:24:32You can either get a cheap data plan
01:24:34for real-time tracking
01:24:36or get side mirrors
01:24:38from thieves with special covers.
01:24:40You can find models
01:24:42that come with locks
01:24:44made from anti-cut materials.
01:24:46The cover will also protect
01:24:48your side mirrors
01:24:50from scratches and scruffs
01:24:52and extend their lifespan.
01:24:54Plus, you can go creative
01:24:56and choose covers
01:24:58with your favourite team's logo
01:25:00or something else
01:25:02that's important to you.
01:25:04Not a bad idea
01:25:06to hide a plastic bottle
01:25:08over the wheel
01:25:10or a shirt on the trunk of your car.
01:25:12These and other small things
01:25:14will likely get you out of the car.
01:25:16The bad guys can also pretend
01:25:18to be nice and helpful
01:25:20and to tell you to pull over
01:25:22because there's something
01:25:24under your car.
01:25:26The idea here is, again,
01:25:28to get you out of your car
01:25:30and let them steal it.
01:25:32So instead of going out,
01:25:34close the windows,
01:25:36and you'll be safe.
01:25:38Criminals aren't the only bad guys
01:25:40who can do your vehicle harm.
01:25:42Harsh winter weather
01:25:44can be a problem too.
01:25:46If you don't want to find
01:25:48your wipers stuck to the windshield
01:25:50and scrape them off every morning,
01:25:52leave them up when you're not driving.
01:25:54You've probably heard
01:25:56it's a bad idea
01:25:58because it ruins the arm spring
01:26:00and can tempt someone
01:26:02to steal your wipers.
01:26:04Don't worry,
01:26:06they're after your wiper blades.
01:26:08In case you forget
01:26:10to put the wipers up
01:26:12and find them safely stuck
01:26:14to your windshield,
01:26:16try running the A.C.
01:26:18Cold air will defrost the windows
01:26:20just like warm air.
01:26:22It works by dehumidifying the air.
01:26:24If your lock is frozen
01:26:26and you can't get inside
01:26:28your own car,
01:26:30treat it with some hand sanitizer.
01:26:32That substance can melt the ice
01:26:34without a problem.
01:26:36To prevent your windshield
01:26:38from getting frosty,
01:26:40mix three parts vinegar
01:26:42and one part water
01:26:44and spray that solution
01:26:46on the windows overnight.
01:26:48It'll save you some scraping time
01:26:50in the morning.
01:26:52Always keep your gas tank
01:26:54more than half full in cold weather.
01:26:56Moist air will be happy
01:26:58to fill any empty space
01:27:00above the fuel in your tank.
01:27:02And that air
01:27:04will condense to water
01:27:06and gasoline,
01:27:08so it settles at the bottom
01:27:10of your tank.
01:27:12When enough of it accumulates,
01:27:14it'll go through the fuel line
01:27:16to the engine,
01:27:18and that's not really good.
01:27:20To protect your favorite car
01:27:22from rust,
01:27:24wash your vehicle regularly.
01:27:26Something as simple as that
01:27:28can be the difference
01:27:30because dirt damages
01:27:32the protective layer
01:27:34of clear coat and paint
01:27:36of the car and the wheel wells.
01:27:38Make sure the car paint
01:27:40isn't chipping or peeling.
01:27:42You need that layer
01:27:44to protect your vehicle
01:27:46from the elements.
01:27:48In the cold season,
01:27:50salt from the road
01:27:52can also cause some rust spots.
01:27:54To avoid that,
01:27:56you should at least
01:27:58rinse the car every week,
01:28:00even in the winter.
01:28:02And don't forget to wax it
01:28:04at least twice a year.
01:28:06And protect it from UV rays.
01:28:08One more thing
01:28:10is to keep the inside
01:28:12of the car clean.
01:28:14If you spill something inside,
01:28:16always mop up the liquid.
01:28:18You don't want it to seep further
01:28:20and hit the metal parts.
01:28:22This is exactly how rust forms.
01:28:24Did you know
01:28:26that every 15 seconds
01:28:28a home burglary occurs
01:28:30in the United States?
01:28:32This means that approximately
01:28:344,800 burglaries
01:28:36can occur in the United States.
01:28:38And police can only solve
01:28:4013% of all the reported cases.
01:28:42So yeah,
01:28:44home security is nothing
01:28:46to be joked about.
01:28:48And so I won't.
01:28:50But still, don't worry.
01:28:52It's not like you need
01:28:54to turn your house
01:28:56into a fortress to feel safe.
01:28:58There are a great number
01:29:00of things you can do
01:29:02to keep the bad people
01:29:04out of your house
01:29:06when burglarized.
01:29:08So you should definitely
01:29:10consider setting up one.
01:29:12However, there are many
01:29:14different types of security
01:29:16systems out there.
01:29:18That's why it can get
01:29:20overwhelming to choose
01:29:22the best one for your
01:29:24specific needs,
01:29:26desired level of protection,
01:29:28and budget.
01:29:30Yet again,
01:29:32it all comes down
01:29:34to two options.
01:29:36The first is
01:29:38professional systems
01:29:40that are likely long-term.
01:29:42Professional systems
01:29:44come with fees.
01:29:46However,
01:29:48companies usually
01:29:50require lower upfront
01:29:52equipment costs
01:29:54since they will spread
01:29:56the costs throughout
01:29:58the course of your contract.
01:30:00Once you decide
01:30:02on a professional
01:30:03installation,
01:30:04you have to make
01:30:06sure the equipment
01:30:08works correctly.
01:30:10All in all,
01:30:12you should pick
01:30:14professionally installed
01:30:16security systems
01:30:18if you want to
01:30:20put up your feet
01:30:22and relax instead
01:30:24of watching long
01:30:26hours of tutorial
01:30:28videos or reading
01:30:30pages of manuals.
01:30:32Still,
01:30:34DIY installations
01:30:36come in handy.
01:30:38The greatest thing
01:30:40about DIY systems
01:30:42is that while
01:30:44the average
01:30:46monitoring price
01:30:48is around $50 per
01:30:50month on professionally
01:30:52installed systems,
01:30:54it is around $28
01:30:56a month on DIY ones.
01:30:58Plus, there are
01:31:00no installation fees
01:31:02with DIY systems
01:31:04and no
01:31:06security costs.
01:31:08At the end of the day,
01:31:10the most important
01:31:12thing you need to do
01:31:14before choosing a
01:31:16system is evaluate
01:31:18the needs of your
01:31:20neighborhood as well
01:31:22as your house.
01:31:24Did you know that
01:31:2634% of burglars
01:31:28simply use the
01:31:30front door when
01:31:32breaking into a
01:31:33house?
01:31:35That's not enough.
01:31:37You need to inspect
01:31:39all your exterior
01:31:41doors too.
01:31:43Make sure the
01:31:45door frames are
01:31:47strong and the
01:31:49hinges are protected.
01:31:51You can always
01:31:53use door
01:31:55reinforcement kits
01:31:57to add extra
01:31:59protection.
01:32:00If your door has
01:32:01a lock,
01:32:03no stranger
01:32:05can just walk
01:32:07into your house
01:32:09using the keys.
01:32:11One other way to
01:32:13boost security
01:32:15for your door is
01:32:17to use wireless
01:32:19doorbell cameras.
01:32:21This one from
01:32:23Amazon is extremely
01:32:25user-friendly.
01:32:26It's 100% wireless.
01:32:28It has a built-in
01:32:29camera and you
01:32:31don't need to worry
01:32:33about the weather
01:32:35conditions because
01:32:36it's also waterproof.
01:32:37By the way,
01:32:39don't forget about
01:32:41the sliding glass
01:32:43doors.
01:32:44You can use a
01:32:46window bar or
01:32:48dowel in the
01:32:50track to keep
01:32:52them from being
01:32:53forced open.
01:32:54Or you can
01:32:56add a door
01:32:57to keep
01:32:59the glass
01:33:01from
01:33:03breaking.
01:33:04If you
01:33:06don't want
01:33:08that to happen,
01:33:09you can try
01:33:11reinforcing the
01:33:13glass with
01:33:14window security
01:33:15film, adding
01:33:16window bars,
01:33:17or installing
01:33:19window sensors.
01:33:20If none of that
01:33:22is possible,
01:33:23you can also
01:33:25plant prickly
01:33:26trees.
01:33:27What's the
01:33:28difference between
01:33:29an actor and
01:33:30a burglar?
01:33:31Burglars don't
01:33:32like to be in the
01:33:33spotlight.
01:33:34That's why having
01:33:35outdoor lighting is
01:33:36to your advantage.
01:33:37Lights should be
01:33:38placed around your
01:33:39front and back
01:33:40yards, along
01:33:41pathways, and
01:33:42near the garage.
01:33:43To make your
01:33:44outdoor security
01:33:45lights more
01:33:46effective, you
01:33:47can use
01:33:48motion-activated
01:33:49ones.
01:33:50Take this one,
01:33:51for example.
01:33:52It's solar-powered,
01:33:53so it'll help you
01:33:54save energy.
01:33:55It's able to run
01:33:56four to five
01:33:57nights on
01:33:58rainy days.
01:34:00Also,
01:34:01don't allow the
01:34:02burglars to play
01:34:03hide-and-seek.
01:34:04While trees and
01:34:05shrubs may make
01:34:06your home look
01:34:07more beautiful,
01:34:08they also provide
01:34:09a convenient hiding
01:34:10spot for burglars.
01:34:11That's why you
01:34:12should trim down
01:34:13trees and plants,
01:34:14at least the ones
01:34:15close to your
01:34:16house that could
01:34:17be used for cover.
01:34:18Choose smaller
01:34:19flowers and bushes
01:34:20instead, so that
01:34:21burglars don't have
01:34:22a hiding spot to
01:34:23wait for you to
01:34:24climb in.
01:34:25The same thing
01:34:26goes for any
01:34:27locked gates,
01:34:28sheds, or other
01:34:29outdoor buildings
01:34:30you have.
01:34:31Make sure those
01:34:32places are locked.
01:34:33Burglars can use
01:34:34stools and ladders
01:34:35to climb in from
01:34:36the windows too,
01:34:37so don't tempt
01:34:38them by leaving
01:34:39one outside.
01:34:40This one goes
01:34:41without saying,
01:34:42but I will
01:34:43anyway.
01:34:44Lock the garage.
01:34:45Even if there's
01:34:46no access to your
01:34:47home through there,
01:34:48it's likely that you
01:34:49still have plenty
01:34:50of valuable stuff
01:34:51stored in there
01:34:52that burglars
01:34:53might be interested
01:34:54in.
01:34:55It's also wise to
01:34:56store your garage
01:34:57door opener inside
01:34:58your house rather
01:34:59than leave it in
01:35:00your car.
01:35:01This way, you'll be
01:35:02preventing burglars
01:35:03from easily taking
01:35:04it.
01:35:05If you use a
01:35:06security code to
01:35:07open your garage,
01:35:08then keep it
01:35:09confidential and
01:35:10avoid entering it
01:35:11in front of other
01:35:12people, including
01:35:13neighbors.
01:35:14Some neighbors,
01:35:15well, you just
01:35:16don't know.
01:35:17Installing a driveway
01:35:18alarm will also
01:35:19help secure the
01:35:20garage.
01:35:21These days, not
01:35:22only burglars but
01:35:23porch pirates,
01:35:24aka package thieves,
01:35:25are a big problem
01:35:26too.
01:35:27Last year, almost
01:35:28one in seven
01:35:29Americans fell
01:35:30victim to them.
01:35:31This is where
01:35:32security cameras
01:35:33prove to be useful.
01:35:34First of all, they
01:35:35work as a deterrent,
01:35:36and secondly, if
01:35:37someone were to
01:35:38really steal your
01:35:39package, you'd be
01:35:40able to identify
01:35:41them thanks to
01:35:42the security footage.
01:35:43If you can't spare
01:35:44some money to get
01:35:45a good security
01:35:46camera for the
01:35:47time being, you
01:35:48can opt for a
01:35:49fake one.
01:35:50They're a lot
01:35:51cheaper, but make
01:35:52your home look more
01:35:53secure than it
01:35:54actually is.
01:35:55This one is worth
01:35:56considering if you're
01:35:57searching the market.
01:35:58It contains a
01:35:59flashing light, which
01:36:00makes it look as
01:36:01realistic as it gets.
01:36:03Last but not
01:36:04least, having a
01:36:05safe wouldn't hurt.
01:36:06And don't worry, it
01:36:07doesn't have to be
01:36:08one of those
01:36:09uncrackable giant
01:36:10titanium ones in
01:36:11the heist movies,
01:36:12like Ocean's 23.
01:36:14Burglars may still
01:36:15be able to break
01:36:16into your house
01:36:17despite all the
01:36:18precautions.
01:36:19So, you still need
01:36:20to make sure your
01:36:21valuables are
01:36:22protected at all
01:36:23times.
01:36:24You can hide all
01:36:25things important from
01:36:26your expensive jewelry
01:36:27to your vital
01:36:28documents in there
01:36:29just to be extra
01:36:30safe.
01:36:31If you're going to
01:36:32get yourself one,
01:36:33make sure it is
01:36:34fire-resistant,
01:36:35waterproof, and
01:36:36heavy enough that a
01:36:37thief can't pick it
01:36:38up and walk away
01:36:39with it.
01:36:40As they say, better
01:36:41safe than sorry!
01:36:51Every year, there
01:36:52are about two and a
01:36:53half million
01:36:54burglaries.
01:36:55That's one every
01:36:5613 seconds.
01:36:57And the one thing
01:36:58any burglar wants to
01:36:59know all about when
01:37:00targeting your house
01:37:01you.
01:37:02What valuables you
01:37:03have, what you
01:37:04buy, where you
01:37:05travel, your
01:37:06schedule, any and
01:37:07everything.
01:37:08Your doorbell
01:37:09rings, you answer
01:37:10it, and nobody's on
01:37:11the other side.
01:37:12Before you blame
01:37:13those neighborhoods
01:37:14for your actions,
01:37:15you need to
01:37:16make sure your
01:37:17valuables are
01:37:18safe.
01:37:19Before you blame
01:37:20those neighborhood
01:37:21pranksters again,
01:37:22consider this.
01:37:23Someone could be
01:37:24checking to see if
01:37:25you're home.
01:37:26Same goes for any
01:37:27strange calls you get
01:37:28with nobody on the
01:37:29other line.
01:37:30On that note, don't
01:37:31just open the door
01:37:32at any knock or
01:37:33ring.
01:37:34Verify who's on
01:37:35the other side
01:37:36first.
01:37:37If they say they're
01:37:38from your utility
01:37:39company, rental
01:37:40office, or city
01:37:41services, ask them
01:37:42for ID and call the
01:37:43company to get it
01:37:44checked.
01:37:45Even if you have a
01:37:46video doorbell,
01:37:47anybody can buy any
01:37:48doorbell these days.
01:37:49Don't go based on
01:37:50looks alone.
01:37:51A seemingly
01:37:52innocent flyer or
01:37:53ad under the
01:37:54doormat can also
01:37:55mean your house is a
01:37:56target.
01:37:57If it's still there
01:37:58the next day, it can
01:37:59make burglars think
01:38:00that nobody's home.
01:38:01Any person who
01:38:02finds some junk mail
01:38:03under their feet
01:38:04will throw it away,
01:38:05right?
01:38:06They have clever
01:38:07ways of finding out
01:38:08if you have an
01:38:09alarm system, what
01:38:10kind of doors and
01:38:11windows you have,
01:38:12if you have a dog,
01:38:13where you like to
01:38:14go on vacation, and
01:38:15so on.
01:38:16If you feel
01:38:17a stranger asks
01:38:18you, go with your
01:38:19gut and don't
01:38:20overshare.
01:38:21Know that
01:38:22something's not
01:38:23right if somebody's
01:38:24taking pics of your
01:38:25house and car.
01:38:26They might even
01:38:27try to be sneaky
01:38:28about it, like
01:38:29pretending they're
01:38:30taking a selfie, or
01:38:31talking on the phone
01:38:32as they snap the
01:38:33pic.
01:38:34If you don't trust
01:38:35random photographers,
01:38:36stay cool and explain
01:38:37that you don't want
01:38:38them to do it and
01:38:39that it's your
01:38:40private property.
01:38:41Burglars might also
01:38:42stage some accident
01:38:43just to lure you
01:38:44out of your house.
01:38:45A fake utility
01:38:46worker can claim
01:38:47there's a gas or
01:38:48water leak.
01:38:49You leave the room
01:38:50for a couple of
01:38:51minutes, but it's
01:38:52already too late.
01:38:53An experienced
01:38:54burglar can get
01:38:55what they need in
01:38:56as little as 90
01:38:57seconds.
01:38:58Always validate
01:38:59the identity of
01:39:00strangers showing
01:39:01up like this.
01:39:02Just call your
01:39:03utility provider.
01:39:04Beware if you see
01:39:05some sticker or
01:39:06paint on your
01:39:07door.
01:39:08Sure, these could
01:39:09just be coincidental
01:39:10nuisances, but it
01:39:11can also be a sign
01:39:12that someone wants
01:39:13to mark your
01:39:14house and car
01:39:16and set it apart
01:39:17from the rest.
01:39:18Get rid of it as
01:39:19soon as you can.
01:39:20Be careful when
01:39:21you sell your car
01:39:22or any other big
01:39:23price items.
01:39:24Delete the ads you
01:39:25posted as soon as
01:39:26you sell it.
01:39:27Many burglars call
01:39:28and pretend to be
01:39:29interested, asking
01:39:30if you still have it,
01:39:31saying, no, sold it
01:39:32already, we'll let
01:39:33them know you've
01:39:34just gotten a lot
01:39:35of money.
01:39:36Even if you spent
01:39:37it already, this
01:39:38person might like to
01:39:39break in and find
01:39:40out for themselves.
01:39:41You check into your
01:39:42hotel room, connect
01:39:43to Wi-Fi, jump on
01:39:44the bed, and post
01:39:4515 photos of your
01:39:46new window view.
01:39:47When the initial surge
01:39:48of excitement is gone,
01:39:49you notice a suspicious
01:39:50blinking light on
01:39:51your big TV.
01:39:52Could it be that
01:39:53someone is watching
01:39:54you?
01:39:55Or, have you just
01:39:56seen too many
01:39:57spy movies?
01:39:58Well, hidden cameras
01:39:59come in all shapes
01:40:00and sizes.
01:40:01Large ones are
01:40:02easy to spot, but
01:40:03small ones are
01:40:04hard to spot.
01:40:05If you're in a
01:40:06hotel room, you
01:40:07might be able to
01:40:08spot someone
01:40:09with their
01:40:10camera.
01:40:11Large ones are
01:40:12easy to spot, but
01:40:13the small ones can
01:40:14be really sneaky
01:40:15and inconspicuous.
01:40:16They can be hiding
01:40:17behind furniture, in
01:40:18decorations, or
01:40:19vents, and anywhere
01:40:20else you'll have
01:40:21trouble noticing.
01:40:22There are even
01:40:23special cameras that
01:40:24can be hidden in
01:40:25everyday movable
01:40:26objects like alarm
01:40:27clocks, picture
01:40:28frames, vases, and
01:40:29lamps.
01:40:30Check to see if
01:40:31these objects are
01:40:32facing at a strange
01:40:33angle or if they're
01:40:34positioned to get
01:40:35the best view of
01:40:36your room or
01:40:37bathroom.
01:40:38The easiest way to
01:40:39spot a hidden
01:40:40cam is to look for
01:40:41the lens reflection
01:40:42because all cameras
01:40:43come with lenses.
01:40:44Turn off the lights
01:40:45and slowly scan the
01:40:46room with a
01:40:47flashlight, laser
01:40:48pointer, or a
01:40:49special wireless
01:40:50spy cam detector.
01:40:51It comes with
01:40:52infrared scanning
01:40:53lights and one
01:40:54illuminating light.
01:40:55When you find a
01:40:56reflective red spot,
01:40:57you gotta turn on
01:40:58the flashlight to
01:40:59help check if there
01:41:00is a hidden camera.
01:41:01Definitely check the
01:41:02vents along with
01:41:03the camera to
01:41:04make sure it's
01:41:05hidden.
01:41:06If you're in a
01:41:07dark room, check
01:41:08the vents along with
01:41:09any other holes and
01:41:10gaps in the walls or
01:41:11ceiling.
01:41:12Some advanced
01:41:13detectors even show
01:41:14you what the camera
01:41:15is seeing, making it
01:41:16way easier to spot
01:41:17and disable.
01:41:18The detectors only
01:41:19work on cameras that
01:41:20are turned on and
01:41:21working normally
01:41:22though.
01:41:23Your mobile phone
01:41:24can also help you
01:41:25find some hidden
01:41:26threads.
01:41:27Turn on Bluetooth
01:41:28and walk around.
01:41:29See if any
01:41:30unknown devices
01:41:31pop up on the
01:41:32screen.
01:41:33Another idea is to
01:41:34install a hidden
01:41:35camera on your
01:41:36phone.
01:41:37Another idea is to
01:41:38install a network
01:41:39scanner app that
01:41:40shows all devices that
01:41:41are connected to the
01:41:42Wi-Fi network you're
01:41:43using at the hotel.
01:41:44When it's done
01:41:45scanning, study the
01:41:46list for devices
01:41:47called something
01:41:48like IP camera or
01:41:49cam.
01:41:50Plus, you can put
01:41:51your phone on selfie
01:41:52mode, turn off the
01:41:53light and close the
01:41:54curtains and look
01:41:55around the room
01:41:56slowly while focusing
01:41:57on the screen.
01:41:58Keep an eye out for
01:41:59purple or white
01:42:00lights on the
01:42:01screen.
01:42:02If you're in a
01:42:03dark room, check
01:42:04the vents along with
01:42:05your phone.
01:42:06You can play
01:42:07detective some more
01:42:08and call your friend
01:42:09or family member and
01:42:10start walking around
01:42:11your room.
01:42:12Secret cameras should
01:42:13emit a sort of radio
01:42:14frequency.
01:42:15It will most likely
01:42:16interfere with your
01:42:17phone call signal.
01:42:18If you start hearing
01:42:19any weird noises while
01:42:20you're on the phone in
01:42:21a certain area of your
01:42:22room, make sure to
01:42:23inspect it carefully.
01:42:24Check out the light
01:42:25switches, electrical
01:42:26outlets, lamps and
01:42:27other objects you
01:42:28normally wouldn't
01:42:29see.
01:42:30If you're in a dark
01:42:31room, check the
01:42:32vents along with
01:42:33your phone.
01:42:34Check out the light
01:42:35switches, electrical
01:42:36outlets, lamps and
01:42:37other objects you
01:42:38normally wouldn't
01:42:39pay attention to.
01:42:40If they look a bit
01:42:41crooked, have a hole
01:42:42or seem misplaced, it
01:42:43could be a sign that
01:42:44someone tampered
01:42:45with them.
01:42:46Many spy devices need
01:42:47wires and whoever
01:42:48installed them had to
01:42:49hide those wires, often
01:42:50behind the vinyl
01:42:51baseboard.
01:42:52That's why the place
01:42:53where the floor and
01:42:54the wall meet is
01:42:55another area you
01:42:56should check.
01:42:57Ridges, bumps or
01:42:58discoloration could be
01:42:59a sign there's a
01:43:00microphone hiding
01:43:01there.
01:43:02The same goes
01:43:04for spots on ceilings
01:43:05and walls, even if
01:43:06they're not larger
01:43:07than a coin.
01:43:08If you do find a
01:43:09hidden camera or
01:43:10something looking
01:43:11suspicious, don't shy
01:43:12away and let the hotel
01:43:13administration or your
01:43:14booking service know
01:43:15about it.
01:43:16Don't try to touch or
01:43:17move the device
01:43:18yourself.
01:43:19If the hotel denies
01:43:20everything, contact
01:43:21local law enforcement.
01:43:22After you've scanned
01:43:23the room for cameras,
01:43:24check out the
01:43:25mirrors.
01:43:26Someone could be
01:43:27watching from the
01:43:28other side of the
01:43:29room.
01:43:30If you're in a dark
01:43:31room, check the
01:43:32mirror.
01:43:33Someone could be
01:43:34watching you from
01:43:35the other side.
01:43:36First, see if the
01:43:37mirror is built into
01:43:38the wall or can be
01:43:39adjusted.
01:43:40If the mirror is
01:43:41semi-transparent, it
01:43:42will be built into the
01:43:43wall.
01:43:44You can do a simple
01:43:45test to check the
01:43:46mirror.
01:43:47Press your fingertip
01:43:48against the glass and
01:43:49push firmly enough to
01:43:50leave a fingerprint as
01:43:51you move your finger
01:43:52away.
01:43:53Study the
01:43:54fingerprint.
01:43:55If there's a small
01:43:56gap between the print
01:43:57and the mirror where
01:43:58the glass should be,
01:43:59then it's just a
01:44:00mistake.
01:44:01If there's a big gap
01:44:02between the glass and
01:44:03the mirror, then it's
01:44:04just a mirror.
01:44:05On a semi-transparent
01:44:06mirror, there will be
01:44:07no gap.
01:44:08Another way to check
01:44:09if your mirror is
01:44:10semi-transparent is
01:44:11simply to tap the
01:44:12glass.
01:44:13If someone is
01:44:14watching you from the
01:44:15other side, the mirror
01:44:16will make an empty
01:44:17sound.
01:44:18A double mirror needs
01:44:19a brighter light on
01:44:20the other side than
01:44:21on yours.
01:44:22Get close to it and
01:44:23cup your hands around
01:44:24your eyes.
01:44:25Do you see some
01:44:26light behind the
01:44:27mirror?
01:44:28If so, you might have
01:44:29an unmarked
01:44:30audience.
01:44:31Before you leave your
01:44:32room or go to bed,
01:44:33make sure every door
01:44:34is securely locked.
01:44:35By every door, I mean
01:44:36not only the entrance
01:44:37to the room, but also
01:44:38the door leading to the
01:44:39terrace, if you have
01:44:40one.
01:44:41You can bring a
01:44:42portable door lock
01:44:43with you for extra
01:44:44security if you're
01:44:45staying in.
01:44:46You could also start a
01:44:47little DIY project and
01:44:48wrap a belt or a bag
01:44:49strap around the arm
01:44:50that pushes the door
01:44:51shut.
01:44:52Buckle it up and
01:44:53put it on your door
01:44:54door.
01:44:55If the door is
01:44:56securely locked,
01:44:57then you can
01:44:58secure the door
01:44:59buckle it up and
01:45:00wrap it around several
01:45:01times for an extra
01:45:02layer of protection.
01:45:03Another idea for
01:45:04when you're about to
01:45:05nap or go to sleep is
01:45:06to build a pyramid of
01:45:07stuff by the door.
01:45:08Glasses and mugs
01:45:09will do perfectly.
01:45:10If someone tries to
01:45:11get inside while
01:45:12you're sleeping,
01:45:13there'll be some
01:45:14serious noise.
01:45:15Intruders prefer to
01:45:16keep it low-key, so
01:45:17they're highly likely
01:45:18to give up on robbing
01:45:19you straight away.
01:45:20If you travel with
01:45:21some valuables and
01:45:22don't have a lot of
01:45:23money, you can
01:45:24save a lot of
01:45:25money by
01:45:26buying some
01:45:27expensive
01:45:28valuables and
01:45:29don't feel
01:45:30comfortable leaving
01:45:31them around the
01:45:32room.
01:45:33You could put them
01:45:34in the safe inside
01:45:35your room.
01:45:36But because those
01:45:37safes use passcodes
01:45:38instead of physical
01:45:39locks, someone from
01:45:40the hotel has to
01:45:41know the master code
01:45:42to unlock it, just
01:45:43in case.
01:45:44So, you can bring
01:45:45your own safe with
01:45:46you instead.
01:45:47You can find the
01:45:48ones looking like
01:45:49books on Amazon,
01:45:50for example.
01:45:51They're made of
01:45:52strong metal and
01:45:53textured paper.
01:45:54They come with a
01:45:55combination lock and
01:45:56have enough room to
01:45:57store wallets, wallets,
01:45:58wallets, wallets,
01:45:59wallets, wallets,
01:46:00wallets, wallets,
01:46:01wallets, wallets,
01:46:02wallets, wallets,
01:46:03wallets, wallets,
01:46:04wallets, wallets,
01:46:05wallets, wallets,
01:46:06wallets, wallets,
01:46:07wallets, wallets,
01:46:08wallets, wallets,
01:46:09wallets, wallets,
01:46:10wallets, wallets,
01:46:11wallets, wallets,
01:46:12wallets, wallets,
01:46:13wallets, wallets,
01:46:14wallets, wallets,
01:46:15wallets, wallets,
01:46:16wallets, wallets,
01:46:17wallets, wallets,
01:46:18wallets, wallets,
01:46:19wallets, wallets,
01:46:20wallets, wallets,
01:46:21wallets, wallets,
01:46:22wallets, wallets,
01:46:23wallets, wallets,
01:46:25and drop a pen
01:46:26parallel to the laptop
01:46:27under a certain angle.
01:46:29You can measure the angle
01:46:30with your smartwatch
01:46:31or phone
01:46:32using the Compass app.
01:46:33Again,
01:46:34if someone moves it,
01:46:35you'll know.
01:46:38Even something as simple
01:46:39as a
01:46:40Please Do Not Disturb sign
01:46:41can help you
01:46:42figure out
01:46:43if someone entered
01:46:44your room
01:46:45while you were away.
01:46:46Make it look like
01:46:47you left in a rush
01:46:48and the sign
01:46:49accidentally stuck
01:46:50between the door
01:46:51and the door frame.
01:46:52If you come back
01:46:53and the sign
01:46:54is hanging freely,
01:46:55then someone
01:46:56must have ignored it
01:46:57and tried to disturb you.
01:46:59In that case,
01:47:00you can contact
01:47:01reception
01:47:02and ask to send someone
01:47:03to enter the room
01:47:04with you
01:47:05to keep you safe.
01:47:07If you care
01:47:08about the cleanliness
01:47:09of your room
01:47:10as much as you do
01:47:11about your belongings
01:47:12and your personal safety,
01:47:13this one's for you.
01:47:16Hotel housekeeping workers
01:47:17normally have
01:47:18up to 20 rooms
01:47:19to take care of
01:47:20on an 8-hour shift.
01:47:22It means
01:47:23they'll have
01:47:24no more than 30 minutes
01:47:25for your room.
01:47:26It gives them
01:47:27enough time
01:47:28to make the bed,
01:47:29clean the floors
01:47:30in the room
01:47:31and the bathroom,
01:47:32empty the trash bins
01:47:33and dust all surfaces.
01:47:35But,
01:47:36they rarely have the time
01:47:37to take care
01:47:38of smaller objects
01:47:39like light switches,
01:47:40door and drawer handles
01:47:41and remotes.
01:47:43And yes,
01:47:44these are exactly
01:47:45the objects
01:47:46you'll be in contact
01:47:47with the most.
01:47:48They can actually
01:47:49have more germs
01:47:50than the toilet.
01:47:51So,
01:47:52if you want to be sure
01:47:53those germs won't
01:47:54land on your hands,
01:47:55bring enough
01:47:56antibacterial wipes
01:47:57to clean
01:47:58all those things
01:47:59before you touch them.
01:48:01As the famous song says,
01:48:02it's the most
01:48:03wonderful time
01:48:04of the year.
01:48:05Everyone's leaving
01:48:06their homes
01:48:07to go visit
01:48:08their families
01:48:09and you are
01:48:10one of those people.
01:48:11You take a final look
01:48:12around your house
01:48:13before you head out,
01:48:14lock your door
01:48:15and leave.
01:48:16But wait,
01:48:17I have an important
01:48:18warning for you.
01:48:20Did you know
01:48:21that statistically
01:48:22most burglaries
01:48:23happen before
01:48:24the holidays begin?
01:48:25Especially
01:48:26on the 5th,
01:48:276th,
01:48:2811th,
01:48:2917th
01:48:30and 18th
01:48:31of December.
01:48:32That shouldn't be
01:48:33too surprising though.
01:48:34By the end of November
01:48:35or the beginning
01:48:36of December,
01:48:37your house
01:48:38starts to fill
01:48:39with brand new presents.
01:48:41Maybe you have bought
01:48:42an expensive necklace
01:48:43for your mother,
01:48:44the latest tech gadget
01:48:45for your father
01:48:46and a bike
01:48:47for your nephew.
01:48:48These make
01:48:49a small fortune,
01:48:50wouldn't you agree?
01:48:51I can already see
01:48:52the dollar signs
01:48:53in the burglar's eyes.
01:48:56Your home
01:48:57becomes most vulnerable
01:48:58in the late afternoons
01:48:59or early evenings
01:49:00after the sun sets.
01:49:02Burglars act quickly
01:49:03before you come home
01:49:04from work.
01:49:06Weekend evenings
01:49:07are also when
01:49:08the most burglaries
01:49:09are reported.
01:49:10And when you're
01:49:11out at parties
01:49:12or dinners,
01:49:13burglars know
01:49:14they can take their time
01:49:15since it's likely
01:49:16you will be out
01:49:17until late hours.
01:49:19And if you're away,
01:49:20then there's no escaping
01:49:21your fate.
01:49:23But there are
01:49:24some precautions
01:49:25you can take
01:49:26to offer fewer clues
01:49:27about your belongings
01:49:28and whereabouts
01:49:29to burglars.
01:49:30And no,
01:49:31they don't involve
01:49:32throwing fake parties
01:49:33with cardboard people.
01:49:36First things first,
01:49:37we always tend
01:49:38to place trees
01:49:39by the window,
01:49:40right?
01:49:41It makes everything
01:49:42feel cozier
01:49:43and there's a certain charm
01:49:44to displaying
01:49:45your wonderfully decorated
01:49:46tree to the people
01:49:47who pass by your street.
01:49:49Well,
01:49:50that's actually
01:49:51a big no-no
01:49:52if you want to
01:49:53keep your place safe.
01:49:55Also,
01:49:56it's not advised
01:49:57to keep your gifts
01:49:58under the tree
01:49:59as well as near the windows
01:50:00or any obvious places
01:50:01for days
01:50:02until it's finally
01:50:03time to open them.
01:50:05Because this will
01:50:06allow burglars
01:50:07to quickly locate
01:50:08these items of value.
01:50:10Seeing the tree
01:50:11is already set
01:50:12from your window
01:50:13might get them
01:50:14to start watching
01:50:15your house
01:50:16as they wait for you
01:50:17to leave
01:50:18so they can
01:50:19finally break in.
01:50:21Whether you're going
01:50:22to be at home
01:50:23for the holidays
01:50:24or you're going
01:50:25to be away,
01:50:26it will always be
01:50:27a clever idea
01:50:28to put your lights
01:50:29on a timer.
01:50:30If you're going
01:50:31to be on the road,
01:50:32have them turn on
01:50:33during the hours
01:50:34you would normally be home
01:50:35so that your place
01:50:36doesn't appear empty.
01:50:38The timer will also
01:50:39come in handy
01:50:40if you're just going
01:50:41to visit a place
01:50:42for only a few hours.
01:50:44If you're not able
01:50:45to get a timer,
01:50:46you can always
01:50:47leave some lights on
01:50:48to make the house
01:50:49seem somehow occupied.
01:50:51Burglars might
01:50:52eventually realize
01:50:53that there is no one
01:50:54in the house
01:50:55since nobody
01:50:56would be turning them off,
01:50:57but it can still
01:50:58save you some time
01:50:59if you're going
01:51:00on a short vacation.
01:51:02And remember,
01:51:03the cost of leaving
01:51:04the lights on
01:51:05will always be lower
01:51:06than the cost
01:51:07of a break-in.
01:51:09On a related note,
01:51:10if you're one
01:51:11of those people
01:51:12who power their
01:51:13outdoor lights
01:51:14with extensions
01:51:15that go through
01:51:16the windows
01:51:17and connect to
01:51:18the inside of the house,
01:51:19you might want
01:51:20to stop doing that.
01:51:21Since this might
01:51:22prevent windows
01:51:23from being properly
01:51:24closed and secured,
01:51:25it will make it
01:51:26a lot easier
01:51:27for any burglar
01:51:28to break in.
01:51:29Instead,
01:51:30you can always
01:51:31use battery-operated lights.
01:51:33You may be inclined
01:51:34to post photos
01:51:35of your parties,
01:51:36dinners,
01:51:37and gatherings
01:51:38on social media
01:51:39to show your new dress
01:51:40or just how much fun
01:51:41you're having
01:51:42to your followers,
01:51:43but I advise you
01:51:44not to do that.
01:51:46At least wait
01:51:47until the event
01:51:48is over
01:51:49and you're home,
01:51:50because that
01:51:51would be declaring
01:51:52that your home is empty
01:51:53and ready for burglars
01:51:54to break in
01:51:55if anyone
01:51:56is targeting you.
01:51:58The more offline you are,
01:51:59the safer you
01:52:00and your house will be.
01:52:02Even if your
01:52:03social media accounts
01:52:04are set to private,
01:52:05sharing your location,
01:52:06status,
01:52:07and so on
01:52:08might still
01:52:09cause you trouble.
01:52:10Because what if
01:52:11the burglar
01:52:12is also a hacker?
01:52:15Having a hidden
01:52:16spare key
01:52:17outside your house
01:52:18comes with benefits
01:52:19when you forget
01:52:20yours at the office
01:52:21or drop them
01:52:22through the elevator holes.
01:52:23However,
01:52:24that will only
01:52:25make the burglar's
01:52:26jobs easier.
01:52:27Even if they
01:52:28don't know where they are,
01:52:29there's a good chance
01:52:30that with a quick search
01:52:31of the usual places
01:52:32people hide their keys,
01:52:34they will be able
01:52:35to find them.
01:52:37What you can do instead
01:52:38is to give them
01:52:39to a trusted neighbor
01:52:40or a friend
01:52:41to keep until you're back
01:52:42and ask them
01:52:43to check your house
01:52:44from time to time
01:52:45or better,
01:52:46every day.
01:52:48And if you can
01:52:49ask that neighbor
01:52:50or friend
01:52:51if they can pick up
01:52:52your packages
01:52:53while you're away,
01:52:54that will add another
01:52:55layer of protection
01:52:56for your house.
01:52:58Some online orders
01:52:59or mail
01:53:00may not arrive on time,
01:53:01especially during
01:53:02the holidays
01:53:03when the delivery companies
01:53:04get super busy.
01:53:06And if they arrive
01:53:07when you're not home,
01:53:08there's a good chance
01:53:09that the delivery person
01:53:10will just leave them
01:53:11by your door.
01:53:13When the packages
01:53:14and letters
01:53:15keep building up
01:53:16on your porch,
01:53:17they will not only
01:53:18help burglars understand
01:53:19that no one's home,
01:53:21but they can also
01:53:22invite strangers
01:53:23to grab your boxes.
01:53:25To avoid this,
01:53:26you can track them
01:53:27and let your neighbors
01:53:28know when they will arrive.
01:53:30By the way,
01:53:31the same thing goes
01:53:32for any scheduled deliveries
01:53:33such as newspapers,
01:53:34magazines,
01:53:35or bills as well.
01:53:38Before you leave the house,
01:53:40take photos
01:53:41of your valuable items
01:53:42such as jewelry,
01:53:43artwork,
01:53:44and electronic devices,
01:53:46as well as record
01:53:47their models
01:53:48and serial numbers.
01:53:49This will not only
01:53:50help you stop burglars
01:53:51from breaking into
01:53:52your house in any way,
01:53:53but it will also
01:53:54come in handy
01:53:55if they indeed
01:53:56do break in
01:53:57and steal stuff.
01:53:59This way,
01:54:00you will know
01:54:01what's missing
01:54:02from your collection
01:54:03and will be able
01:54:04to show pictures
01:54:05to the police,
01:54:06which in return
01:54:07will allow them
01:54:08to locate
01:54:09the stolen items.
01:54:11Burglars often
01:54:12look around
01:54:13to try and find
01:54:14a ladder,
01:54:15any garden equipment,
01:54:16or any store tool
01:54:17that will help them
01:54:18break a door
01:54:19or window
01:54:20to get inside
01:54:21your house.
01:54:22That's why you should
01:54:23securely lock stuff
01:54:24like these
01:54:25inside sheds
01:54:26or garages.
01:54:27Once you do that,
01:54:28it will become
01:54:29much harder
01:54:30for the burglars
01:54:31to figure out ways
01:54:32to break things
01:54:33or climb to windows.
01:54:34And while they do that,
01:54:35someone can notice
01:54:36their suspicious activity
01:54:38and make them run away
01:54:39without completing
01:54:40their crime.
01:54:43Even if you're living
01:54:44in a place
01:54:45with hot weather,
01:54:46never ever leave
01:54:47windows open
01:54:48in rooms that you're
01:54:49not using,
01:54:50even if you're at home.
01:54:51And make sure
01:54:52they're all closed tight
01:54:53before leaving the house.
01:54:54You can always
01:54:55use window locks
01:54:56and replace
01:54:57fly screens
01:54:58with security meshes.
01:55:00After the holiday ends,
01:55:02it's important
01:55:03that you don't
01:55:04pile the boxes
01:55:05with expensive presents
01:55:06outside your house
01:55:07near the trash bin.
01:55:09If you do,
01:55:10the burglars
01:55:11will not only learn
01:55:12what you've received,
01:55:13but will also get tempted
01:55:14to break in.
01:55:15Especially if they see
01:55:16you have an item
01:55:17they want.
01:55:19They might also assume
01:55:20that you will likely
01:55:21replace the stolen item
01:55:22and this may
01:55:23encourage them
01:55:24to break in
01:55:25for a second time.
01:55:27What you should do instead
01:55:28is to cut the packages
01:55:29before throwing them
01:55:30into the trash.
01:55:32Or you can also
01:55:33burn them in the fireplace
01:55:34to keep the house
01:55:35cozy and safe.
01:55:38Last,
01:55:39but not least,
01:55:40it's always beneficial
01:55:41to have an intruder alarm
01:55:43no matter what
01:55:44time of year it is.
01:55:46And just having it
01:55:47is not enough.
01:55:48You have to remember
01:55:49to use it.
01:55:51Unfortunately,
01:55:52many people
01:55:53who have an alarm
01:55:54don't bother setting it
01:55:55unless they're going
01:55:56on vacation.
01:55:57Setting your alarm
01:55:58should become a habit.
01:56:00Make sure to use it
01:56:01whenever you go out
01:56:02as well as
01:56:03whenever you come in
01:56:04since there's always
01:56:05a chance that
01:56:06burglars might break in
01:56:07while you're sleeping
01:56:08in your bed too.
01:56:10So,
01:56:11have you checked all the
01:56:12precautions off your list?
01:56:13Good!
01:56:14Then happy
01:56:15and safe holidays!
01:56:34When the entire house
01:56:35starts shaking
01:56:36and groaning,
01:56:37terrified,
01:56:38you run outside
01:56:39and just as you turn around
01:56:40in your front yard,
01:56:42you see your lovely home
01:56:43fall apart.
01:56:45You walk to the pile of debris
01:56:46that used to be your house
01:56:48and inspect it
01:56:49to find out
01:56:50what could have happened.
01:56:51And then you see it,
01:56:52a giant swarm of insects
01:56:54flying over
01:56:55the crumbling remains.
01:56:57And you remember,
01:56:58you've seen them
01:56:59in and out of your home
01:57:00for years
01:57:01but didn't pay attention.
01:57:03If you had,
01:57:04you would have known
01:57:05that they were
01:57:06flying carpenter ants
01:57:07and your house
01:57:08had been in danger
01:57:09for a long time.
01:57:11Carpenter ants
01:57:12only fly for a short period of time
01:57:14in late spring
01:57:15or early summer
01:57:16when the weather conditions
01:57:17are good enough.
01:57:18It's their mating season.
01:57:20At this time,
01:57:21they fly in swarms
01:57:22around the house
01:57:23and are most visible.
01:57:25During the rest of the year,
01:57:26they behave almost like
01:57:27normal ants,
01:57:28hiding inside the holes
01:57:29and nooks of the house.
01:57:31And I say almost
01:57:32because they do
01:57:33one thing
01:57:34that's harmful to you.
01:57:35They basically
01:57:36eat your home
01:57:37from the inside.
01:57:39Carpenter ants,
01:57:40as the name implies,
01:57:41like wood a lot.
01:57:43Moist or rotting wood
01:57:44is their first choice.
01:57:46It's easier to chew through
01:57:47to make their tunnels.
01:57:48But if they encounter
01:57:49a good and sturdy
01:57:50piece of wood,
01:57:51they won't stop either.
01:57:53It'll just hold them
01:57:54for a bit longer.
01:57:56As the tunnel system grows,
01:57:57more ants appear
01:57:58from the eggs
01:57:59their queen lays
01:58:00her entire life.
01:58:01And after a few years,
01:58:03the colony consists
01:58:04of thousands,
01:58:05if not millions,
01:58:06of ants.
01:58:07While your house
01:58:08looks like a piece of cheese,
01:58:09with you none the wiser.
01:58:12When the flying ants appear,
01:58:13it's a sign
01:58:14that the colony
01:58:15has already grown
01:58:16to an enormous size.
01:58:18And your home
01:58:19is in grave danger.
01:58:20Most likely,
01:58:21there's a whole
01:58:22ant palace
01:58:23underneath your house
01:58:24and within all
01:58:25its wooden parts,
01:58:26from walls to the roof.
01:58:28Just a few years more
01:58:29and the structural damage
01:58:30will become too much,
01:58:31leading to disaster.
01:58:33So if you see
01:58:34swarms of flying insects
01:58:35inside your home,
01:58:37call pest control
01:58:38immediately.
01:58:40The bullet ant
01:58:41is the largest
01:58:42of all the ant species.
01:58:44Still, despite being
01:58:45the biggest,
01:58:46they grow to no larger
01:58:47than the size of a penny.
01:58:49The bullet ant
01:58:50is most likely to be found
01:58:51in countries such as
01:58:52Nicaragua and Paraguay,
01:58:54deep within the rainforests.
01:58:56It might be small,
01:58:57but it has a big bite.
01:58:59The bite of a bullet ant
01:59:00is up to 30 times
01:59:01more painful
01:59:02than the sting
01:59:03of a wasp or a bee.
01:59:05Locals sometimes refer
01:59:06to the small insect
01:59:07as the 24-hour ant
01:59:10because you'll experience
01:59:11an entire day
01:59:12of discomfort
01:59:13after their bite.
01:59:15Despite the unpleasant feeling,
01:59:16the bite of a bullet ant
01:59:17isn't too dangerous
01:59:19and should heal
01:59:20within a week.
01:59:21These ants have
01:59:22a peculiar habit
01:59:23that might make it easy
01:59:24to avoid their powerful bite.
01:59:26Bullet ants release
01:59:27a strong and disgusting stench
01:59:29to drive away predators.
01:59:31So, if you ever find yourself
01:59:32trekking through the rainforest
01:59:34and smell an intensely
01:59:35unpleasant odor,
01:59:37run.
01:59:39There are just shy
01:59:40of 300 different species
01:59:41of fire ants
01:59:42all across the world.
01:59:44All the species
01:59:45have the same powerful bite.
01:59:47They're tiny insects
01:59:48who travel in large colonies
01:59:50and have a distinct
01:59:51light brown color,
01:59:52almost red.
01:59:54Fire ants are most commonly
01:59:55found in the United States.
01:59:57And are attracted to food.
01:59:59They tend to crash
02:00:00a lot of picnics
02:00:01that they're not invited to.
02:00:03Fire ant bites
02:00:04are incredibly itchy
02:00:06but not very dangerous.
02:00:08Running the bites
02:00:09under some cold water
02:00:10should help to soothe
02:00:11the itchiness
02:00:12and the bite should go away
02:00:13in a week or so.
02:00:15If you have a more severe
02:00:16reaction than itchiness,
02:00:17make sure to seek
02:00:18urgent advice
02:00:19from your doctor.
02:00:21Now, velvet ants
02:00:22aren't ants at all.
02:00:24They're a kind of
02:00:25wingless wasp
02:00:26that just looks
02:00:27a lot like ants.
02:00:28These bugs
02:00:29don't form large colonies
02:00:31and usually live alone
02:00:32hiding in tall grass.
02:00:34This behavior
02:00:35has given them
02:00:36another nickname,
02:00:37cow ants.
02:00:38Because when a cow
02:00:39is grazing nearby,
02:00:40it might step on
02:00:41a velvet ant
02:00:42and get a painful bite
02:00:43in return.
02:00:45Humans also get
02:00:46bitten sometimes,
02:00:47especially if they
02:00:48walk barefoot.
02:00:50Velvet ants are venomous
02:00:51but their venom
02:00:52is less potent
02:00:53than that of bees
02:00:54so it's not really dangerous.
02:00:56Still, the pain
02:00:57from such a bite
02:00:58is serious
02:00:59and if you want to
02:01:00squash this bug,
02:01:01good luck!
02:01:02They have an
02:01:03unusually tough carapace
02:01:04that protects them
02:01:05from other stinging insects
02:01:06and even birds.
02:01:09Termites are the scare
02:01:10of all things wooden
02:01:11and of ants too.
02:01:13When ants encroach
02:01:14on their territory,
02:01:16termites go out
02:01:17of their notorious mounds
02:01:18and give back
02:01:19more than they receive.
02:01:21The insects are
02:01:22basically blind
02:01:23but their heads
02:01:24are equipped with
02:01:25natural spit fire.
02:01:27They spit acid
02:01:28at their foes,
02:01:29driving them away
02:01:30quicker than they got there.
02:01:31Don't even think
02:01:32of getting your fingers
02:01:33in the way
02:01:34of that acidic stream.
02:01:35It's a really
02:01:36unpleasant feeling.
02:01:38Speaking of spitting,
02:01:39bombardier beetles
02:01:40are the best at that.
02:01:42The look of this bug
02:01:43is menacing enough itself
02:01:44but when it feels threatened,
02:01:46it will give out
02:01:47a loud pop
02:01:48and spray the enemy
02:01:49with boiling hot liquid.
02:01:51There's a chamber
02:01:52inside the bug's belly
02:01:53that keeps two substances
02:01:54for that.
02:01:56When they mix
02:01:57before spraying,
02:01:58they react with each other
02:01:59and quickly get really hot.
02:02:01Even birds
02:02:02are in big trouble
02:02:03if they get into
02:02:04the beetle's way.
02:02:05And other insects
02:02:06simply have no chance
02:02:07against it.
02:02:09Tarantula hawks
02:02:10are long, thin insects
02:02:11with beautiful
02:02:12rust-colored wings
02:02:13and yellow antennae.
02:02:15They tend to be found
02:02:16in rainforests
02:02:17across Asia,
02:02:18America and Africa.
02:02:20They like to live alone
02:02:21and make their homes
02:02:22by burrowing into the ground.
02:02:24If you ever come across
02:02:25a tarantula hawk,
02:02:26be sure to move away
02:02:27very slowly.
02:02:29These insects only attack
02:02:30if they sense a threat.
02:02:32Tarantula hawks
02:02:33are thought to have
02:02:34one of the most painful
02:02:35stings in the world.
02:02:36The pain of the
02:02:37tarantula hawk sting
02:02:38is incredibly intense
02:02:39and lasts for
02:02:40three to four minutes.
02:02:42After these minutes
02:02:43have passed,
02:02:44the sting won't require
02:02:45any urgent care
02:02:46and should heal
02:02:47on its own.
02:02:48The yellow jacket
02:02:49is a dangerous
02:02:50species of wasp
02:02:51that can be found
02:02:52all over the world.
02:02:54They are named
02:02:55for their distinctive
02:02:56yellow and black patterns.
02:02:57The yellow
02:02:58is a striking neon color,
02:02:59much brighter
02:03:00than a normal wasp.
02:03:02Yellow jackets
02:03:03live in large colonies
02:03:04and build their nests
02:03:05in trees,
02:03:06bushes
02:03:07and even underground.
02:03:08If you come across
02:03:09a yellow jacket nest,
02:03:10move away slowly
02:03:11and be careful
02:03:12not to threaten
02:03:13or irritate the wasps.
02:03:15The sting of a yellow jacket
02:03:16definitely isn't
02:03:17a pleasant feeling.
02:03:19The Japanese hornet
02:03:20is the largest species
02:03:21of hornet in the world.
02:03:23The Japanese hornets
02:03:24have a yellow
02:03:25and black striped pattern,
02:03:26just like the yellow jacket.
02:03:28What makes them
02:03:29distinguishable
02:03:30from bees and wasps
02:03:31is their size
02:03:32and shape.
02:03:33The Japanese hornet
02:03:34is much larger
02:03:35and thinner
02:03:36than a bumblebee
02:03:37and much longer
02:03:38than a wasp.
02:03:39These hornets,
02:03:40of course,
02:03:41live in Japan,
02:03:42where they travel
02:03:43in colonies
02:03:44of up to 700 members.
02:03:45People who have
02:03:46previously been stung
02:03:47by the Japanese hornet
02:03:48often say
02:03:49it's like being struck
02:03:50by a red hot poker.
02:03:51If you're ever
02:03:52unfortunate enough
02:03:53to be stung
02:03:54by one of these insects,
02:03:55immediately call for help.
02:03:56And while you wait
02:03:57for the doctors,
02:03:58wash the sting
02:03:59with cold water.
02:04:01Asian giant hornets
02:04:02live mostly
02:04:03in Asian countries,
02:04:04but they were reported
02:04:05in North America
02:04:06in 2019.
02:04:08These beasts are big,
02:04:09yellow,
02:04:10and vicious.
02:04:11It's impossible
02:04:12to confuse a giant hornet
02:04:13with any other
02:04:14bee or wasp.
02:04:16They are much larger
02:04:17and a lot more aggressive.
02:04:19But the worst thing
02:04:20about them is their stinger,
02:04:21which is more than
02:04:22three times longer
02:04:23than that of a honeybee.
02:04:25The stinger contains
02:04:26a really potent venom.
02:04:28And several stings
02:04:29from an Asian giant hornet
02:04:30can bring down
02:04:31even a large animal
02:04:32and human too.
02:04:34And if that wasn't enough,
02:04:35these creatures
02:04:36can even spray their venom
02:04:37aiming at the eyes.
02:04:39Needless to say,
02:04:40that's an unforgettable
02:04:41experience.
02:04:43Okay, let's admit it,
02:04:44all centipedes
02:04:45are terrifying.
02:04:47And perhaps one of the
02:04:48most horrible species
02:04:49is a Texas red-headed centipede.
02:04:52First of all,
02:04:53it looks like it's ascended
02:04:54from your deepest,
02:04:55darkest nightmares.
02:04:57A black sectioned body,
02:04:58dozens of yellowish legs
02:04:59that look more like claws,
02:05:01and a red head
02:05:02with two long prongs.
02:05:04That's a picture enough
02:05:05to make me run for it
02:05:06in a split second.
02:05:09Being pretty large,
02:05:10these crawlers
02:05:11have a voracious appetite,
02:05:13munching on toads,
02:05:14lizards,
02:05:15and an occasional rat.
02:05:17Sometimes, when desperate,
02:05:18they can even catch a bat
02:05:19right in the middle of a flight.
02:05:22And of course,
02:05:23red-headed centipedes
02:05:24are venomous,
02:05:25fitting for such an appearance.
02:05:27Luckily,
02:05:28they're not interested in humans,
02:05:29and that's mutual.
02:05:32Looking for something disgusting?
02:05:34Well, have you come
02:05:35to the right place?
02:05:36Let me explain.
02:05:39Oh, it's spring cleaning time.
02:05:41You walk around the house
02:05:42humming a merry tune
02:05:43when you hear
02:05:44a faint buzzing noise.
02:05:46You stop and strain your ears
02:05:47and here it goes again,
02:05:49seemingly from behind
02:05:50the wall in the kitchen.
02:05:52You come closer
02:05:53and notice a brown spot
02:05:54on the wall
02:05:55that wasn't there
02:05:56just yesterday.
02:05:57You touch the spot
02:05:58and oh, the horror!
02:06:00The drywall sinks inside
02:06:01beneath your fingers,
02:06:03and an entire cloud of wasps
02:06:04fly out of the hole,
02:06:06buzzing indignantly.
02:06:08You run for your life,
02:06:09and the wasps chase you outside
02:06:10for disturbing their nest.
02:06:12When you're far enough,
02:06:13the buzzing cloud
02:06:14returns into the house.
02:06:15It seems it's their home now,
02:06:16not yours.
02:06:18It might sound like some movie,
02:06:20but in fact,
02:06:21wasps do build their nests
02:06:22in houses,
02:06:23especially wooden ones.
02:06:25They prefer dark,
02:06:26enclosed spaces,
02:06:27so they can make a home
02:06:28in a tree hollow,
02:06:30a compost box,
02:06:31a shed,
02:06:32or your very own attic.
02:06:34Probably the worst thing
02:06:35is that you're likely
02:06:36not to notice
02:06:37a wasp infestation
02:06:39inside your house
02:06:40until it's too late.
02:06:42In spring,
02:06:43wasp queens migrate
02:06:44to find a new home
02:06:45and lay their eggs.
02:06:47If one of them
02:06:48likes your house,
02:06:49it will crawl inside
02:06:50some cozy, dark nook
02:06:51and hide there.
02:06:53Within a week or so,
02:06:54the first baby wasps
02:06:55will be born,
02:06:57and if the space
02:06:58is too confined,
02:06:59they'll start gnawing
02:07:00on the wooden parts of it
02:07:01to make room
02:07:02for their growing colony.
02:07:04It might take a few years
02:07:05before you notice
02:07:06the symptoms
02:07:07of an infestation, though.
02:07:09Wasps are believed
02:07:10to return to the same place
02:07:11every year
02:07:12because they leave behind
02:07:13their pheromones.
02:07:15And the colony
02:07:16will be growing
02:07:17with every passing year, too.
02:07:19Wasps will be munching
02:07:20through wooden boards
02:07:22and even plaster
02:07:23to make themselves comfortable,
02:07:24and you might hear
02:07:25their rustling and buzzing
02:07:26while they're at work.
02:07:28If you do hear
02:07:29strange sounds
02:07:30from behind your walls,
02:07:31don't wait long
02:07:32and call pest control.
02:07:34It means the colony
02:07:35is already big enough
02:07:36to cause you trouble.
02:07:38In the worst-case scenario,
02:07:39the innards of your house
02:07:40might be chock-full
02:07:41of wasps by then.
02:07:43The last and most obvious
02:07:44symptom of an infestation,
02:07:46though,
02:07:47is when you see brown spots
02:07:48or streaks
02:07:49on your drywall.
02:07:51That means the wasps
02:07:52are already a hair's breath
02:07:53away from you
02:07:54and are about to break
02:07:55inside your living space.
02:07:57They can easily
02:07:58chew through drywall,
02:08:00and you might end up
02:08:01meeting the unexpected guests
02:08:02at night
02:08:03or while having dinner.
02:08:05Wasps are probably
02:08:06the worst pest
02:08:07to be infested with.
02:08:09Not only do they
02:08:10undermine your abode,
02:08:11but they're also
02:08:12very protective
02:08:13of their territory.
02:08:15If they break outside
02:08:16of their space
02:08:17between the walls
02:08:18and into your house proper,
02:08:19they'll immediately
02:08:20attack you
02:08:21as an intruder.
02:08:22How rude!
02:08:23And wasp stings
02:08:24aren't to be trifled with,
02:08:25especially if you
02:08:26have an allergy.
02:08:28There are numerous
02:08:29species of wasps
02:08:30that can dwell
02:08:31inside people's homes,
02:08:32but perhaps the most
02:08:33vicious ones
02:08:34are yellow jackets.
02:08:36They have a distinct
02:08:37bright yellow
02:08:38and black striped body,
02:08:39are bigger than other wasps,
02:08:40and their sting
02:08:41is much more unpleasant.
02:08:43Add to that
02:08:44their natural aggressiveness,
02:08:45and you get
02:08:46a flying insect
02:08:47that you don't want
02:08:48to meet at all.
02:08:50Still,
02:08:51if you notice
02:08:52any of the symptoms
02:08:53of wasp infestation,
02:08:54make sure you don't
02:08:55take any action
02:08:56on your own
02:08:57and call the professionals.
02:08:59Working with strong chemicals
02:09:00like pesticides
02:09:01is unsafe,
02:09:02and in addition,
02:09:03you can do yourself
02:09:04more harm than good
02:09:05if you don't know
02:09:06exactly what you're doing.
02:09:08It takes skill
02:09:09and knowledge
02:09:10to get rid of
02:09:11all the pests in your house,
02:09:12and if you leave
02:09:13just a couple of wasps,
02:09:14especially the queen,
02:09:15all your efforts
02:09:16might be in vain.
02:09:18So leave it to the experts.
02:09:21A more inconspicuous
02:09:22but no less dangerous
02:09:23bug that you don't
02:09:24want to have at home either
02:09:26is a wood borer.
02:09:28There are dozens
02:09:29of different species
02:09:30of those too,
02:09:31and some are no more
02:09:32than a nuisance,
02:09:33while others can be
02:09:34pretty destructive.
02:09:36Wood borers get their name
02:09:37for, well,
02:09:38boring wood.
02:09:39As in eating holes in it.
02:09:41When these bugs are ready
02:09:42to lay their eggs,
02:09:43they find some cozy place
02:09:45with lots of timber around,
02:09:46such as beneath your wood flooring,
02:09:48for instance,
02:09:49and rest there.
02:09:51The hatching larvae
02:09:52are hungry,
02:09:53so they start munching
02:09:54on the delicious wood
02:09:55their caring mom
02:09:56left them on.
02:09:57They can eat almost 24-7
02:09:59and only stop
02:10:00when they finally mature
02:10:01and are ready to go
02:10:02explore the world outside.
02:10:04As they do,
02:10:05they leave small exit holes
02:10:07in the wooden items
02:10:08they'd been living in.
02:10:10The danger is that
02:10:11these beetles are silent
02:10:12as opposed to wasps,
02:10:13so you won't hear a thing
02:10:15while they're snacking
02:10:16on your favorite cupboard.
02:10:18The first sign
02:10:19of their presence
02:10:20you're likely to notice
02:10:21is the exit hole,
02:10:22and that means
02:10:23the wood borer
02:10:24has already done
02:10:25some damage inside.
02:10:27While most species of borers
02:10:28don't do much harm
02:10:29to your dwelling
02:10:30except for those exit holes,
02:10:32some of them
02:10:33can be a huge trouble.
02:10:35For example,
02:10:36the European house borer
02:10:37can do a lot of damage
02:10:38to an older house
02:10:39if it decides
02:10:40to lay its eggs there.
02:10:42Although these bugs
02:10:43like to feed on sapwood,
02:10:44which is more likely
02:10:45in newer houses,
02:10:46they can still make nests
02:10:47in older ones too.
02:10:49And, given that
02:10:50the European house borer
02:10:51is pretty big,
02:10:52up to about 3 quarters of an inch,
02:10:54the exit holes it leaves
02:10:56are quite large
02:10:57and noticeable too.
02:10:59Other borers still,
02:11:00like the Queensland pine beetle,
02:11:02native to Australia,
02:11:03often eat through older houses,
02:11:05undermining
02:11:06their structure completely.
02:11:08If you happen to have
02:11:09an infestation of these guys,
02:11:11the best course of action
02:11:12is to call pest control
02:11:13immediately.
02:11:15The only good news,
02:11:16perhaps,
02:11:17is that wood borers
02:11:18don't attack humans.
02:11:19Well, that's something.
02:11:21Now, these bugs
02:11:22won't eat you
02:11:23or your house,
02:11:24but having them
02:11:25inside your home
02:11:26is still unpleasant
02:11:27and dangerous.
02:11:28You know them well.
02:11:30Cockroaches.
02:11:31And, if you've seen
02:11:32one in your house
02:11:33during the day,
02:11:34I've got bad news for you.
02:11:35There are already
02:11:36dozens,
02:11:37if not hundreds,
02:11:38of these pests
02:11:39crawling around the place.
02:11:41Cockroaches are
02:11:42nocturnal creatures,
02:11:43and seeing one or two
02:11:44in your kitchen
02:11:45when you come for
02:11:46a midnight snack
02:11:47is not that bad yet.
02:11:49But, when they appear
02:11:50in broad daylight,
02:11:51it means some numbers
02:11:52of their colony
02:11:53are already growing desperate.
02:11:56It would do you good
02:11:57to call pest control
02:11:58fast in that case.
02:12:01Cockroaches prefer
02:12:02to live in places
02:12:03where there's plenty of food
02:12:04water,
02:12:05and human environment
02:12:06to snuggle into.
02:12:08This is a perfect description
02:12:09of an older human dwelling.
02:12:11There's more than enough space
02:12:12for roaches to hide
02:12:13and prosper,
02:12:15and people themselves
02:12:16provide all the food
02:12:17and water the pests need.
02:12:19Their favorite snacks
02:12:20are meat, starch,
02:12:21and sweet stuff,
02:12:22but they don't mind
02:12:23ransacking your garbage bin
02:12:24or pantry.
02:12:26They won't eat
02:12:27through your walls
02:12:28or furniture,
02:12:29and in that regard
02:12:30they're pretty harmless.
02:12:31But, cockroaches are known
02:12:32carriers of various
02:12:33dangerous germs.
02:12:35If a cockroach rummaged in,
02:12:36let's say,
02:12:37your sugar bowl,
02:12:38and then you put that sugar
02:12:39into your tea,
02:12:40you've got a chance
02:12:41of contracting something nasty.
02:12:44And, of course,
02:12:45the more roaches there are
02:12:46in your house,
02:12:47the higher this possibility is.
02:12:51It's not hard
02:12:52to recognize
02:12:53a cockroach infestation.
02:12:55The first sign
02:12:56you should look out for
02:12:57is the smell.
02:12:58Roaches emit
02:12:59odorous substances
02:13:00into the air,
02:13:01making your home smell
02:13:02oily and musty.
02:13:04The stronger the odor,
02:13:05the more pests there are,
02:13:06so don't hesitate
02:13:07to call the specialist
02:13:08even if you haven't seen
02:13:09a single cockroach yet.
02:13:12A much more significant symptom
02:13:13of their presence
02:13:14in your house
02:13:15is finding shed roach skin
02:13:16around the place.
02:13:18They have a chitin carapace
02:13:19that they replace
02:13:20from time to time
02:13:21as they grow.
02:13:22So, if you find one,
02:13:23it means there's at least
02:13:24an entire cockroach family
02:13:25somewhere around.
02:13:28But, much more likely,
02:13:29there's a whole colony already.
02:13:32Finally,
02:13:33nothing can be more compelling
02:13:34than seeing a live cockroach
02:13:36with your own eyes, right?
02:13:38If you notice a grown one,
02:13:39that might be good news
02:13:40for you yet.
02:13:42Roaches habitually travel
02:13:43in search of the best place
02:13:44to live in,
02:13:45so when there's an adult cockroach
02:13:47in your house
02:13:48that you see at night,
02:13:49it might still not have begun
02:13:50a family of its own.
02:13:53But, if you enter the kitchen
02:13:54and see one or more
02:13:55smaller cockroaches,
02:13:57well, that's bad luck.
02:13:59It means their parents
02:14:00are somewhere inside your house,
02:14:01as well as their siblings.
02:14:03By the way,
02:14:04although the kitchen is,
02:14:05by all means,
02:14:06the most fruitful place
02:14:07for these creepers,
02:14:08you might also spot them
02:14:09in your bathroom
02:14:10while taking a shower.
02:14:14Roaches find delight
02:14:15in munching on soap,
02:14:17so it's no surprise
02:14:18they crawl into this warm
02:14:19and moist room of your house.
02:14:22Well, I find this whole thing
02:14:23disgusting.
02:14:24Have a good day!
02:14:32Hey there, car owners.
02:14:34Gee,
02:14:35do I have an important
02:14:36message for you?
02:14:37You see, our cars are like
02:14:38our trusty sidekicks,
02:14:39always by our side,
02:14:40even in the most
02:14:41public places.
02:14:42But sometimes we come back
02:14:43to find unexpected surprises
02:14:45waiting for us.
02:14:46Try to imagine yourself
02:14:47strolling up to your
02:14:48four-wheeled companion,
02:14:49and there it is,
02:14:50a flyer,
02:14:52taunting you from
02:14:53under the wiper,
02:14:54or, heaven forbid,
02:14:55a parking ticket
02:14:56just begging for your
02:14:57attention on the windshield.
02:14:58We've all been there, right?
02:14:59Well,
02:15:00hold on to your
02:15:01steering wheels because
02:15:02authorities have a
02:15:03brand new tip for you,
02:15:04and it's a real gem.
02:15:05If you see something
02:15:06on your car that
02:15:07doesn't belong,
02:15:08don't remove it
02:15:09with your bare hand.
02:15:10Intrigued?
02:15:12You see,
02:15:13police forces have been
02:15:14keeping a watchful eye
02:15:15on all things car-related,
02:15:16and they're not just
02:15:17about catching speedsters
02:15:18and enforcing
02:15:19traffic rules.
02:15:20They've got our backs
02:15:21when it comes to
02:15:22unveiling the latest
02:15:23tricks of the trade.
02:15:24Take Arlington,
02:15:25Virginia, for example.
02:15:26The authorities there
02:15:27recently noticed
02:15:28a spike in
02:15:29driver-side airbag thefts.
02:15:31To combat this madness,
02:15:32the police advised
02:15:33folks to park in
02:15:34well-lit areas,
02:15:35lock their vehicles,
02:15:36stash away their
02:15:37valuables,
02:15:38and why not throw in
02:15:39a steering wheel locking
02:15:40device for good measure?
02:15:41Some car thieves
02:15:42have also discovered
02:15:43a new superpower,
02:15:44using their smartphone
02:15:45cameras to peek
02:15:46into your car.
02:15:47It's like they have
02:15:48x-ray vision or something.
02:15:49These sneaky people
02:15:50can bypass the
02:15:51privacy tint in
02:15:52your car windows
02:15:53and get a clear view
02:15:54of your treasures,
02:15:55all without even
02:15:56taking a photo.
02:15:57Smartphones these
02:15:58days, huh?
02:16:00In response,
02:16:01authorities launched
02:16:02a Stow It,
02:16:03Don't Show It
02:16:04campaign,
02:16:05reminding everyone
02:16:06to remove their
02:16:07valuables from sight
02:16:08or, at the very least,
02:16:09stash them away.
02:16:11But wait,
02:16:12there's more.
02:16:13Officers want us
02:16:14to be extra cautious
02:16:15about a new threat
02:16:16lurking around our
02:16:17vehicles.
02:16:18You know how it goes.
02:16:19Leaves, litter,
02:16:20and leaflets often
02:16:21find their way onto
02:16:22our beloved cars.
02:16:23Usually, we'd think
02:16:24nothing of it and
02:16:25simply give our
02:16:26valuables away before
02:16:27zooming off.
02:16:28However, you should
02:16:29think twice before
02:16:30reaching out with
02:16:31your bare hands.
02:16:32Even if it's just to
02:16:33grab a seemingly
02:16:34innocent piece of
02:16:35trash.
02:16:36Why all the fuss,
02:16:37you might wonder?
02:16:38Well, let's take a
02:16:39peek at an incident
02:16:40that unfolded in
02:16:41Houston, Texas.
02:16:42Picture this.
02:16:43One woman,
02:16:44fresh from
02:16:45celebrating her
02:16:46birthday at a
02:16:47local restaurant,
02:16:48heads back to her
02:16:49car, only to find
02:16:50a napkin sticking
02:16:51out of her car
02:16:52door handle.
02:16:53Now, at first,
02:16:54she didn't think
02:16:55it was a napkin.
02:16:56She casually
02:16:57removed the
02:16:58napkin, thinking
02:16:59it's just some
02:17:00random trash.
02:17:01But as it turns out,
02:17:02things then took a
02:17:03crazy turn.
02:17:04Not long after
02:17:05handling that
02:17:06suspiciously placed
02:17:07napkin, she started
02:17:08feeling some tingling
02:17:09in her fingertips.
02:17:10And before she knew
02:17:11it, her whole arm
02:17:12joins the tingle
02:17:13party, leaving her
02:17:14feeling a bit numb.
02:17:15She got all light
02:17:16headed and even
02:17:17struggled to breathe.
02:17:18Being a responsible
02:17:19person, her husband
02:17:20dialed up 911 in
02:17:21a jiffy.
02:17:22Off she went to
02:17:23the hospital, racing
02:17:24back and forth between
02:17:25the hospital and
02:17:26the amusement park.
02:17:27She was taken to
02:17:28the emergency
02:17:29room, where she was
02:17:30taken to the hospital
02:17:31where she was
02:17:32taken to the hospital
02:17:33where she was
02:17:34taken to the hospital
02:17:35where she was
02:17:36taken to the hospital

02:21:17where she was
02:21:18taken to the hospital
02:21:19where she was
02:21:20taken to the hospital
02:21:21where she was
02:21:22taken to the hospital
02:21:23where she was
02:21:24taken to the hospital
02:21:25where she was
02:21:26taken to the hospital
02:21:27where she was
02:21:28taken to the hospital
02:21:29where she was
02:21:30taken to the hospital
02:21:31where she was
02:21:32taken to the hospital
02:21:33where she was
02:21:34taken to the hospital
02:21:35where she was
02:21:36taken to the hospital
02:21:37where she was
02:21:38taken to the hospital
02:21:39where she was
02:21:40taken to the hospital
02:21:41where she was
02:21:42taken to the hospital
02:21:43where she was
02:21:44taken to the hospital
02:21:45Now, I know what you're thinking
02:21:47But what if I'm wrong
02:21:48and it turns out to be
02:21:49a false alarm?
02:21:50We all should be
02:21:51about good faith
02:21:52and nobody should
02:21:53blame you for a moment
02:21:54if it turns out to be
02:21:55a false alarm
02:21:56Better safe than sorry, right?
02:22:10So, you found
02:22:11your first grey hair
02:22:12and you have
02:22:13a huge desire
02:22:14to pull it out
02:22:15and keep it as a souvenir
02:22:16But the all-knowing
02:22:17grandma stops you
02:22:18from doing that
02:22:19since everybody knows
02:22:20two new hairs
02:22:21will grow in its place
02:22:23It's one of the
02:22:24most popular myths
02:22:25that have been
02:22:26going around for years
02:22:28When you pluck out
02:22:29a hair,
02:22:30the follicle
02:22:31still stays where it was
02:22:32and it will produce
02:22:33a substitute soon enough
02:22:35But it doesn't have
02:22:36the superpower
02:22:37to multiply
02:22:38so you'll get
02:22:39just one new grey hair
02:22:41The new hair
02:22:42might even be darker
02:22:43and the hair follicle
02:22:44might produce
02:22:45another pigment this time
02:22:47If you go too far
02:22:48with plucking,
02:22:49though,
02:22:50you might no longer
02:22:51have any hair
02:22:52in that very spot
02:22:54Are you afraid
02:22:55of using your cell phone
02:22:56at the gas pump
02:22:57because it might
02:22:58cause an explosion?
02:23:00Well,
02:23:01there hasn't been
02:23:02a single documented case
02:23:03of a phone
02:23:04giving off
02:23:05a static electrical charge
02:23:06and causing a tragedy
02:23:08All the no cell phone
02:23:09signs at gas stations
02:23:10are a precaution
02:23:11Electronic materials
02:23:12aren't welcome there
02:23:14because they might
02:23:15cause static electricity
02:23:16and be a source of danger
02:23:18Plus,
02:23:19you should be
02:23:20100% alert
02:23:21whenever you're driving
02:23:23Chatting or texting
02:23:24while fueling up
02:23:25might cause
02:23:26some bad consequences
02:23:27like driving away
02:23:28with a gas pump
02:23:29in your car
02:23:31A viral video
02:23:32made millions of people
02:23:33believe
02:23:34that if you see
02:23:35a wire tied to
02:23:36your car door handle,
02:23:37you gotta call
02:23:38the police immediately
02:23:40According to the author,
02:23:41kidnappers use this trick
02:23:42to distract you
02:23:43and then go after you
02:23:45In reality,
02:23:46there have been
02:23:47no officially recorded cases
02:23:48of anyone
02:23:49getting kidnapped
02:23:50this way
02:23:52This urban legend
02:23:53must come from
02:23:54a 2015 Facebook post
02:23:55which mentioned
02:23:56the wire trick
02:23:57and was debunked
02:23:58soon after it came out
02:24:00The idea lived on,
02:24:01though,
02:24:02and keeps resurfacing
02:24:05It does make sense
02:24:06to look after yourself
02:24:07and follow some
02:24:08simple rules
02:24:09that will let you
02:24:10stay safe on the road
02:24:11anyway
02:24:13You might want to
02:24:14learn some self-defense,
02:24:15park in well-lit areas,
02:24:16and always look around
02:24:17for suspicious things
02:24:18and people
02:24:19before you get
02:24:20in the car
02:24:22Also remember
02:24:23that a lot of
02:24:24similar myths
02:24:25and urban legends
02:24:26are only created
02:24:27to grab your attention
02:24:28and get their authors
02:24:29some likes and shares
02:24:32If you add brown sugar
02:24:33to your coffee,
02:24:34confident that it's
02:24:35healthier than the white option,
02:24:36it's probably
02:24:37not the best idea
02:24:39Brown sugar does
02:24:40contain some minerals,
02:24:41but the amount of them
02:24:42is so tiny
02:24:43that it can't really
02:24:44benefit your health
02:24:46Otherwise,
02:24:47it has the same amount
02:24:48of calories
02:24:49and nutritional value
02:24:50as the white sugar
02:24:52The only difference
02:24:53is in color,
02:24:54flavor,
02:24:55and the manufacturing process
02:24:57Brown sugar
02:24:58doesn't go through
02:24:59that much chemical processing
02:25:01So if you're trying
02:25:02to cut your calories,
02:25:03it doesn't really matter
02:25:04which of the sugar types
02:25:05you add to your food
02:25:08When you press
02:25:09the snooze button
02:25:10in the morning,
02:25:11you're not actually
02:25:12going to get
02:25:13those extra 10 minutes
02:25:14of sleep
02:25:15It does feel good
02:25:16to postpone getting up,
02:25:17but the snooze button
02:25:18makes you feel more tired
02:25:19instead of
02:25:20providing you
02:25:21with extra rest
02:25:23You have your own
02:25:24biological sleep cycle
02:25:25that adjusts
02:25:26to your schedule
02:25:28When you wake up
02:25:29and instantly
02:25:30fall asleep again,
02:25:31your brain gets confused,
02:25:32which is why
02:25:33it will get harder
02:25:34and harder
02:25:35for you to get up
02:25:36You'll get
02:25:37alarm rings
02:25:38for the second
02:25:39or fifth time
02:25:40In the long run,
02:25:41the snooze button
02:25:42may mess with
02:25:43your ability
02:25:44to get high-quality
02:25:45deep sleep
02:25:47Another popular
02:25:48sleep myth
02:25:49is that you
02:25:50swallow up
02:25:51eight spiders
02:25:52every night
02:25:53without knowing
02:25:54Relax,
02:25:55you don't swallow
02:25:56any spiders at all
02:25:57To them,
02:25:58you look like a giant
02:25:59or rather
02:26:00a mountain
02:26:01in the landscape
02:26:02Any sounds
02:26:03you produce while sleeping,
02:26:04like breathing
02:26:05are super scary
02:26:06to them
02:26:07So,
02:26:08all they want to do
02:26:09is stay as far away
02:26:10from you
02:26:11as they can
02:26:13This myth
02:26:14went global
02:26:15after a magazine article
02:26:16that mentioned people
02:26:17easily believe
02:26:18anything they see
02:26:19online
02:26:20Well,
02:26:21the article
02:26:22was right,
02:26:23after all
02:26:24You don't really
02:26:25have to wait
02:26:2630 minutes
02:26:27or longer
02:26:28to swim
02:26:29after lunch
02:26:30This myth
02:26:31has been around
02:26:32for more than a century
02:26:33as it was a rule
02:26:34in the
02:26:35Boy Scout
02:26:36handbook
02:26:37It said that
02:26:38swimming sooner
02:26:39than 90 minutes
02:26:40after food
02:26:41could lead to
02:26:42very dangerous
02:26:43consequences
02:26:44It made many people
02:26:45believe that
02:26:46because digestion
02:26:47diverts blood flow
02:26:48from the muscles
02:26:49to the stomach
02:26:50swimming could
02:26:51prevent the blood
02:26:52flow to the stomach
02:26:53give you cramps
02:26:54and even make you
02:26:55drown
02:26:56In reality,
02:26:57extra blood
02:26:58goes to the stomach
02:26:59but it doesn't
02:27:00affect your arms
02:27:01or legs
02:27:02Food might even
02:27:03provide you
02:27:04with extra energy
02:27:05And don't forget
02:27:06to take enough
02:27:07water with it
02:27:08to stay hydrated
02:27:10Diamonds are
02:27:11super expensive
02:27:12because they are
02:27:13so rare, right?
02:27:14It turns out
02:27:15they aren't as rare
02:27:16as we are made
02:27:17to believe
02:27:18Rubies,
02:27:19emeralds
02:27:20and sapphires
02:27:21are much rarer
02:27:22and far more expensive
02:27:23than diamonds
02:27:24Scientists
02:27:25have even found
02:27:26a way to create
02:27:27artificial diamonds
02:27:28making their
02:27:29production
02:27:30rather easy
02:27:31So,
02:27:32the price
02:27:33people are willing
02:27:34to pay
02:27:35is a result
02:27:36of a super successful
02:27:37marketing campaign
02:27:38from over
02:27:39a century ago
02:27:40The company
02:27:41that mined
02:27:42and sold diamonds
02:27:43spread myths
02:27:44about these gems
02:27:45around the world
02:27:46They convinced
02:27:47everyone on the planet
02:27:48that diamonds
02:27:49are so rare
02:27:50that the price
02:27:51is reasonable
02:27:52Plus,
02:27:53they've turned
02:27:54these rocks
02:27:55into a symbol
02:27:56of love
02:27:57and engagement
02:27:58Movies made us
02:27:59believe
02:28:00all dinosaurs
02:28:01were some
02:28:02dangerous lizard
02:28:03But in reality
02:28:04there were
02:28:05all kinds
02:28:06of dino species
02:28:07Some of them
02:28:08weren't much bigger
02:28:09than a cat
02:28:10or a golden retriever
02:28:11It looks like
02:28:12those smaller species
02:28:13were more numerous
02:28:14than their
02:28:15big relatives
02:28:16Plus,
02:28:17some dinos
02:28:18like T-Rex
02:28:19were even covered
02:28:20with feathers
02:28:21especially in the
02:28:22early stages
02:28:23of their lives
02:28:24The deeper
02:28:25you go
02:28:26inside the ocean
02:28:27the darker it gets
02:28:28until there is
02:28:29no light at all
02:28:30The colors
02:28:31change from
02:28:32blue-green
02:28:33close to the surface
02:28:34to more intense blues
02:28:35and then down
02:28:36to indigo blue
02:28:37and total blackness
02:28:40Well,
02:28:41sunlight penetrates
02:28:42deep waters weekly
02:28:43so technically
02:28:44below 3200 feet
02:28:46there is officially
02:28:47no light
02:28:48But there is
02:28:49another type of light
02:28:50down there
02:28:51It's all about
02:28:52blue and green
02:28:53luminescence
02:28:54It generates light
02:28:55thanks to an enzyme
02:28:56called luciferase
02:28:58It breaks down
02:28:59high energy molecules
02:29:00and produces photons
02:29:01and bacteria
02:29:02and some deep
02:29:03sea fish bodies
02:29:06It seems logical
02:29:07that summers
02:29:08are so warm
02:29:09because our planet
02:29:10gets closer to the sun
02:29:11And winters
02:29:12are so cold
02:29:13because the Earth
02:29:14gets as far
02:29:15from our star
02:29:16as it can be
02:29:17Yet,
02:29:18it's another
02:29:19popular myth
02:29:20When it's summer
02:29:21in the northern hemisphere
02:29:22our planet
02:29:23isn't actually
02:29:24closer to the sun
02:29:25It's the opposite
02:29:26The Earth
02:29:27is at its farthest point
02:29:28from the sun
02:29:29during July
02:29:30and at its closest point
02:29:31during January
02:29:33Summer is warm
02:29:34because the axis
02:29:35of our planet
02:29:36is tilted
02:29:37During its orbit
02:29:38the Earth's tilt
02:29:39allows energy
02:29:40coming from the sun
02:29:41to hit us
02:29:42more directly
02:29:43because the angle
02:29:44is steeper
02:29:46The asteroid belt
02:29:47isn't as dangerous
02:29:48as blockbuster
02:29:49made us believe
02:29:50If you were to
02:29:51travel through
02:29:52it wouldn't be
02:29:53a flight through
02:29:54a dense and chaotic
02:29:55field of rocks
02:29:56smashing into each other
02:29:57The asteroid belt
02:29:58is a zone
02:29:59that's 200 million
02:30:00or 300 million
02:30:01miles away
02:30:02from the sun
02:30:04It's a very isolated
02:30:05and lonely void
02:30:06with much space
02:30:07in between
02:30:08If you pulled
02:30:09all those asteroids
02:30:10from that belt
02:30:11together
02:30:12you'd get a mass
02:30:13that's around 4%
02:30:14of our Moon
02:30:15That's why
02:30:16astronauts
02:30:17get really excited
02:30:18when they see
02:30:19just one asteroid
02:30:20smashing into another one
02:30:22Otherwise
02:30:23space is not
02:30:24that eventful
02:30:28A slice of cheese
02:30:29isn't something
02:30:30you'd expect
02:30:31to find on your
02:30:32parked car
02:30:33As hilarious
02:30:34as it seems
02:30:35it might indicate
02:30:36something quite dangerous
02:30:37One woman
02:30:38detailed such a
02:30:39story online
02:30:40At first
02:30:41she thought
02:30:42she had been
02:30:43pranked by
02:30:44some neighborhood kid
02:30:45She decided
02:30:46to call a friend
02:30:47and ask for help
02:30:48with cleaning the car
02:30:49But once the two
02:30:50ladies started
02:30:51removing the
02:30:52melted cheese
02:30:53they noticed
02:30:54something strange
02:30:55two parking spots
02:30:56In it
02:30:57there was a bunch of
02:30:58men staring at them
02:30:59Since she wasn't
02:31:00alone
02:31:01the woman decided
02:31:02to finish cleaning
02:31:03the car
02:31:04Even though
02:31:05the ladies didn't
02:31:06feel comfortable
02:31:07being watched
02:31:08It took them
02:31:09almost an hour
02:31:10to scrape off
02:31:11the cheese
02:31:12that had already
02:31:13been melted
02:31:14under the heat
02:31:15of the sun
02:31:16She did wonder
02:31:17though if this
02:31:18wasn't a tactic
02:31:19to rob a person
02:31:20Because most
02:31:21people would be
02:31:22so focused
02:31:23on cleaning up
02:31:24the mess
02:31:25She thought
02:31:26it would be
02:31:27too fishy
02:31:28since you
02:31:29wouldn't be able
02:31:30to see suspicious
02:31:31people coming at
02:31:32you in due course
02:31:33She went on
02:31:34to recommend
02:31:35if you ever see
02:31:36a piece of cheese
02:31:37on your car
02:31:38just leave it
02:31:39Your safest bet
02:31:40is to scrub it
02:31:41off at home
02:31:42or to take your
02:31:43vehicle to the
02:31:44nearest car wash
02:31:45They'll know
02:31:46the best way
02:31:47to remove it
02:31:48without ruining
02:31:49the paint
02:31:50The slice of
02:31:51cheese
02:31:52may have easily
02:31:53been a coincidence
02:31:54The best option
02:31:55is to drive away
02:31:56as quickly as
02:31:57possible
02:31:58and get to
02:31:59a safe location
02:32:00It should be
02:32:01well lit
02:32:02and populated
02:32:03Then you can
02:32:04safely remove
02:32:05the objects
02:32:06placed on your car
02:32:07Some people
02:32:08have even found
02:32:09money under
02:32:10their wipers
02:32:11It was probably
02:32:12placed there
02:32:13with the same
02:32:14intent in mind
02:32:15Here's a method
02:32:16some people
02:32:17swear by
02:32:18when it comes
02:32:19to decreasing
02:32:20the odds of
02:32:21getting your car
02:32:22snatched away
02:32:23Some people
02:32:24have even
02:32:25swore by
02:32:26the fact that
02:32:27their car
02:32:28was stolen
02:32:29from them
02:32:30Some people
02:32:31have even
02:32:32swore by
02:32:33the fact that
02:32:34their car
02:32:35was stolen
02:32:36from them
02:32:37Some people
02:32:38have even
02:32:39swore by
02:32:40the fact that
02:32:41their car
02:32:42was stolen
02:32:43from them
02:32:44Some people
02:32:45have even
02:32:46swore by
02:32:47the fact that
02:32:48their car
02:32:49was stolen
02:32:50from them
02:32:51Some people
02:32:52have even
02:32:53swore by
02:32:54the fact that
02:32:55their car
02:32:56was stolen
02:32:57from them
02:32:58Some people
02:32:59have even
02:33:00swore by
02:33:01the fact that
02:33:02their car
02:33:03was stolen
02:33:04from them
02:33:05Some people
02:33:06have even
02:33:07swore by
02:33:08the fact that
02:33:09their car
02:33:10was stolen
02:33:11from them
02:33:12Some people
02:33:13have even
02:33:14swore by
02:33:15the fact that
02:33:16their car
02:33:17was stolen
02:33:18from them
02:33:19Some people
02:33:20have even
02:33:21swore by
02:33:22the fact that
02:33:23their car
02:33:24was stolen
02:33:25from them
02:33:26Some people
02:33:27have even
02:33:28swore by
02:33:29the fact that
02:33:30their car
02:33:31was stolen
02:33:32from them
02:33:33Some people
02:33:34have even
02:33:35swore by
02:33:36the fact that

02:33:38was stolen
02:33:39from them
02:33:40Some people
02:33:41have even
02:33:42swore by
02:33:43the fact that
02:33:44their car
02:33:45was stolen
02:33:46from them
02:33:47Some people
02:33:48have even
02:33:49swore by
02:33:50the fact that
02:33:51their car
02:33:52was stolen
02:33:53from them
02:33:54Some people
02:33:55have even
02:33:56swore by

02:33:59was stolen
02:34:00from them
02:34:01Some people

02:34:08Some people

02:34:22Some people

02:34:36Some people

02:34:43Some people
02:34:44have even
02:34:45swore by
02:34:46the fact that
02:34:47their car

02:34:52swore by
02:34:53the fact that
02:34:54their car
02:34:55was stolen
02:34:56from them
02:34:57Some people

02:35:04Some people

02:35:11Some people
02:35:12have even

02:35:15their car
02:35:16was stolen

02:35:18Some people

02:35:37was stolen
02:35:38from them
02:35:39Some people
02:35:40have even

02:35:42the fact that
02:35:43their car
02:35:44was stolen
02:35:45from them
02:35:46Grandparents' scams
02:35:47are really on the rise
02:35:48these days
02:35:49In 2017,
02:35:50the losses from
02:35:51such scams
02:35:52added up to
02:35:53$26 million
02:35:54But in 2018,
02:35:55they almost doubled,
02:35:56reaching $41 million
02:35:58If you find yourself
02:35:59in a similar situation,
02:36:00try not to act
02:36:01immediately
02:36:02Ask the person
02:36:03for some information
02:36:04that could help you
02:36:05verify their identity
02:36:06Also,
02:36:07it might be a good idea
02:36:08to double-check
02:36:09with another family member
02:36:10before sending money
02:36:11to a stranger
02:36:13The Google Voice scam
02:36:14is as easy
02:36:15as it is efficient
02:36:16For scammers,
02:36:17of course
02:36:18Here's what you should
02:36:19look out for
02:36:20You might have posted
02:36:21your phone number
02:36:22on some website
02:36:23for various reasons
02:36:24Maybe you're looking
02:36:25to sell something
02:36:26or offering
02:36:27to perform a service
02:36:28The fraudsters
02:36:29will pick up on
02:36:30this information
02:36:31and rapidly call you
02:36:32asking to verify
02:36:33if you aren't
02:36:34a scammer yourself
02:36:35Talk about
02:36:36reverse psychology
02:36:37You'll be asked
02:36:38to pass on
02:36:39a Google verification code
02:36:40In reality,
02:36:41a Google Voice account
02:36:42is being set up
02:36:43in your name
02:36:44The fraudsters
02:36:45can go on
02:36:46with their scams
02:36:47and pretend
02:36:48to be you
02:36:49while doing it
02:36:50Using the newly
02:36:51created account,
02:36:52rule number one
02:36:53Never share
02:36:54verification codes
02:36:55with anyone
02:36:56Online resumes
02:36:57aren't safe either
02:36:58as they can offer
02:36:59personal information
02:37:00to scammers
02:37:01They will try
02:37:02to contact you
02:37:03pretending to be
02:37:04recruiters
02:37:05Some might even
02:37:06take the time
02:37:07to conduct
02:37:08a job interview
02:37:09Most of them
02:37:10pretend to offer
02:37:11high-paying positions
02:37:12which you'll obviously
02:37:13never get
02:37:14Here's the catch
02:37:15Before they can
02:37:16offer you
02:37:17the documents
02:37:18for employment
02:37:19you'll be asked
02:37:20for money
02:37:21for some participation fee
02:37:22or even for your
02:37:23future home office setup
02:37:24To make sure
02:37:25you're always
02:37:26on the safe side
02:37:27create a different
02:37:28email address
02:37:29which you'll only
02:37:30use for job hunting
02:37:31This way,
02:37:32you can keep
02:37:33your personal email
02:37:34unlisted and safe
02:37:35from any
02:37:36unwanted online scams
02:37:37Always ask recruiters
02:37:38to confirm
02:37:39the information
02:37:40you've heard
02:37:41on the phone
02:37:42or talk to their
02:37:43HR department
02:37:44to confirm
02:37:45that what you're
02:37:46asked to do
02:37:47is according
02:37:48to their policy
02:37:49Bumper stickers
02:37:50on your car
02:37:51give away way more
02:37:52information than you think
02:37:53That custom sticker
02:37:54you made with your dog
02:37:55might show robbers
02:37:56that you're pretty
02:37:57outdoorsy
02:37:58and like to spend
02:37:59a lot of time away
02:38:00from your house
02:38:01or your car
02:38:02leaving them exposed
02:38:03Or that you have
02:38:04enough funds
02:38:05to buy a really
02:38:06expensive dog breed
02:38:07The fact that you
02:38:08have a sticker
02:38:09saying that you
02:38:10have a kid on board
02:38:11I'm easily distracted
02:38:12and always have
02:38:13my hands full
02:38:14It's really easy
02:38:15to steal my car
02:38:18Those stickers
02:38:19that you bring from
02:38:20vacation and place
02:38:21on your car
02:38:22also show that you
02:38:23might be away
02:38:24for a couple of
02:38:25months at a time
02:38:26or that you like
02:38:27to travel long distances
02:38:28If you're proud
02:38:29of your family's
02:38:30activities,
02:38:31don't use bumper
02:38:32stickers to show it
02:38:33It might lure
02:38:34unwanted people
02:38:35and give them
02:38:36unnecessary information
02:38:37like the name
02:38:38of the college
02:38:39you go to
02:38:41It's the same
02:38:42if you're part
02:38:43of a certain profession
02:38:44Thieves can easily
02:38:45assume how many
02:38:46valuables they can
02:38:47find in your car
02:38:48by the amount of money
02:38:49they presume you make
02:38:50Parking decals
02:38:51can even show
02:38:52where you work
02:38:53or live
02:38:54which is something
02:38:55you should never
02:38:56share with strangers
02:38:57The more your car
02:38:58is personalized,
02:38:59the more you'll
02:39:00be remembered
02:39:01It's not always
02:39:02a bad thing
02:39:03but if you ever
02:39:04offend someone
02:39:05in traffic,
02:39:06they'll be more
02:39:07inclined to report
02:39:08you to authorities
02:39:10If you don't
02:39:11intend to keep
02:39:12your car forever,
02:39:13you should consider
02:39:14what it would be like
02:39:15before selling it
02:39:16A lot of bumper
02:39:17stickers on a car
02:39:18can steer buyers away
02:39:19Not to mention,
02:39:20it's a real hassle
02:39:21to remove those decals
02:39:22since they leave
02:39:23a lot of sticky
02:39:24residues behind
02:39:25They can also
02:39:26damage the car's
02:39:27paint layer
02:39:28However,
02:39:29one sticker that
02:39:30can keep thieves away
02:39:31is one suggesting
02:39:32that you have an
02:39:33alarm or tracking
02:39:34system set up
02:39:35in your car
02:39:36You should never
02:39:37keep electronics
02:39:38in your car
02:39:39for longer periods
02:39:40of time
02:39:41Firstly,
02:39:42they can attract
02:39:43unwanted attention
02:39:44from people
02:39:45looking for easy money
02:39:46Not to mention,
02:39:47leaving your phone
02:39:48or charger
02:39:49at extreme temperatures
02:39:50can damage them
02:39:51permanently
02:39:52The fact that you
02:39:53use sunscreen
02:39:54every day
02:39:55is really praiseworthy
02:39:56Just remember
02:39:57not to leave
02:39:58the bottle in the car
02:39:59Leaving sunscreen
02:40:00exposed to the sun
02:40:01can reduce its effects
02:40:02since overheating
02:40:03causes the chemicals
02:40:04to deactivate
02:40:05Specialists recommend
02:40:06that sunscreen
02:40:07be used
02:40:08at temperatures
02:40:09below 77 degrees
02:40:10Fahrenheit
02:40:11You should even
02:40:12keep those driving
02:40:13glasses of yours
02:40:14away from direct sunlight
02:40:15Make sure you
02:40:16place them
02:40:17in your glove box
02:40:18or take them with you
02:40:19when exiting the vehicle
02:40:20Exposure to direct
02:40:21sunlight can damage
02:40:22the lenses
02:40:23and the plastic
02:40:24or metal frame
02:40:25damaging their fit
02:40:26and efficiency
02:40:27against sun rays
02:40:28If you've ever
02:40:29bought hairspray,
02:40:30spray paint,
02:40:31or deodorant
02:40:32you've probably
02:40:33noticed that all
02:40:34these cans have
02:40:35storage temperature
02:40:36You should never
02:40:37leave them exposed
02:40:38to extreme temperatures
02:40:39in your car
02:40:40These bottles
02:40:41can rapidly expand
02:40:42and explode
02:40:43Not to mention
02:40:44their contents
02:40:45can be highly flammable
02:40:46Try not to leave
02:40:47a plastic water bottle
02:40:48in your car either
02:40:49If it's been
02:40:50sitting in the heat
02:40:51you could end up
02:40:52consuming harmful
02:40:53substances
02:40:54like BPA
02:40:55a chemical compound
02:40:56used in manufacturing
02:40:57various types of plastics
02:40:58They can transfer
02:40:59from the plastic
02:41:00into the water
02:41:01after some time
02:41:02That's why
02:41:03even bottled water
02:41:04has an expiration date
02:41:05on it
02:41:06It's not like
02:41:07water can expire
02:41:08It's written there
02:41:09so you know the date
02:41:10up until the water
02:41:11is safe to consume
02:41:12safe from the chemicals
02:41:13in the plastic
02:41:14More so,
02:41:15a water bottle
02:41:16left on the seat
02:41:17of a car
02:41:18in direct sunlight
02:41:19can act as a
02:41:20magnifying glass
02:41:21for the sun's rays
02:41:22and become flammable
02:41:23If you want
02:41:24to make sure
02:41:25your groceries
02:41:26are safe to consume
02:41:27never leave them out
02:41:28at an unsafe temperature
02:41:29Whenever you have
02:41:30to buy perishable groceries
02:41:31leave them
02:41:32in temperatures
02:41:33above 40 degrees
02:41:34Fahrenheit
02:41:35for no longer
02:41:36than two hours
02:41:37or just one hour
02:41:38before the temperature
02:41:39is above 90 degrees
02:41:40Fahrenheit
02:41:41Best if you can
02:41:42buy meats or dairy
02:41:43last from your
02:41:44grocery list
02:41:45That way
02:41:46you get home faster
02:41:47and rapidly store them
02:41:48in your fridge
02:41:49Even in the cold season
02:41:50you should never
02:41:51leave beverages
02:41:52unattended in your car
02:41:53Water
02:41:54juice
02:41:55or soda
02:41:56can expand in their
02:41:57containers if frozen
02:41:58and cause a huge mess
02:41:59I know it's way
02:42:00more comfortable
02:42:01to throw your
02:42:02damp clothes in a bag
02:42:03than in a sauna
02:42:04or the swimming pool
02:42:05Just make sure
02:42:06not to leave them
02:42:07for way too long
02:42:08in your car
02:42:09Those clothes
02:42:10can easily gather
02:42:11mold or bacteria
02:42:12that can get stuck
02:42:13inside tiny places
02:42:14in your car
02:42:15Not to mention
02:42:16you won't be able
02:42:17to wear them
02:42:18ever again
02:42:19Hang them up to dry
02:42:20as soon as you get
02:42:21home to avoid
02:42:22damaging them
02:42:23Hey
02:42:24having fresh breath
02:42:25is something
02:42:26that I always
02:42:27worry about too
02:42:28especially when
02:42:29I'm on the road
02:42:30But I always
02:42:31skip the usual
02:42:32Especially when
02:42:33left in the scorching
02:42:34heat
02:42:35It's not so good
02:42:36in the winter either
02:42:37since it can become
02:42:38frozen solid
02:42:39making it flavorless
02:42:40and dangerous
02:42:41to your pearly whites
02:42:42Best to opt for
02:42:43gumdrops if you
02:42:44really need to keep
02:42:45something minty
02:42:46in your car
02:42:47Your handbag
02:42:48is one of those
02:42:49things you should
02:42:50never leave unattended
02:42:51in your car either
02:42:52We often store
02:42:53valuables in our bags
02:42:54like the keys to
02:42:55our houses
02:42:56or our wallets
02:42:57So it's best to
02:42:58make sure that you
02:42:59never leave them
02:43:00in your car
02:43:01If you need to
02:43:02leave it there
02:43:03place it in the
02:43:04trunk, it's less
02:43:05visible for most
02:43:06cars
02:43:07Your car shouldn't
02:43:08be a safe place
02:43:09for your important
02:43:10documents
02:43:11Either shred or
02:43:12mail them as soon
02:43:13as you can
02:43:14If your car were
02:43:15to be broken into
02:43:16your contracts or
02:43:17tax forms might
02:43:18expose vulnerable
02:43:19information about
02:43:20your life
02:43:21Most people leave
02:43:22documents facing up
02:43:23on their passenger
02:43:24seat which makes
02:43:25them even more
02:43:26readable for curious
02:43:27people
02:43:28Wax crayons are
02:43:29useful during long
02:43:30trips to keep
02:43:31youngsters entertained
02:43:32but it's safer to
02:43:33remove them from
02:43:34the car or place
02:43:35them in an airtight
02:43:36box as soon as you
02:43:37arrive at the
02:43:38destination
02:43:39These art supplies
02:43:40melt easily and
02:43:41can stain your car
02:43:42seats
02:43:43Always plan your
02:43:44trip in advance if
02:43:45you intend to buy
02:43:46houseplants
02:43:47If you know you
02:43:48won't be heading
02:43:49home straight after
02:43:50make sure you
02:43:51purchase sturdy
02:43:52plants
02:43:53Even mild
02:43:54temperatures of
02:43:5545°F to 50°F
02:43:56can wilt away delicate
02:43:57plants within the
02:43:58hour
02:44:00More so, if its
02:44:01leaves touch the
02:44:02windows, the cold
02:44:03glass might ruin the
02:44:04foliage
02:44:05Even if it's a bigger
02:44:06plant, don't
02:44:07transport it in the
02:44:08trunk or let them
02:44:09stick out the window
02:44:10And if it's really
02:44:11cold outside, make
02:44:12sure you warm up
02:44:13your vehicle before
02:44:14placing the plants in
02:44:15Always make sure to
02:44:16drive with your
02:44:17shoes on, no matter
02:44:18how short the
02:44:19distance is or how
02:44:20hot it is outside
02:44:21You might have to
02:44:22brake rapidly and
02:44:23find yourself unable
02:44:24to apply enough
02:44:25force with a bare
02:44:26foot
02:44:27More so, if there's
02:44:28an emergency and you
02:44:29need to step out of
02:44:30the car, you might
02:44:31hurt your feet or
02:44:32waste time putting
02:44:33your shoes back on
02:44:34If you like to travel
02:44:35with your bike or
02:44:36your scooter attached
02:44:37to your vehicle, you
02:44:38need to take special
02:44:39care of those pneumatic
02:44:40tires, those that are
02:44:41air-filled and need a
02:44:42pump to inflate
02:44:43They're also on the
02:44:44list of things not to
02:44:45leave in the car on a
02:44:46sunny day
02:44:47That's because the
02:44:48extreme heat can
02:44:49cause the air inside
02:44:50the tires to expand,
02:44:51at times even
02:44:52resulting in a
02:44:53blowout
02:44:54Those high
02:44:55temperatures can
02:44:56also cause the
02:44:57rubber to weaken,
02:44:58making you more
02:44:59exposed to a flat
02:45:00tire
02:45:01It happens every 43.8
02:45:02seconds

02:52:16Someone ignored all of these simple tips
02:52:18and got their car stolen.
02:52:20What should they do?
02:52:21First, they need to provide all the information to the police.
02:52:25So make sure you know the color.
02:52:27I know, it's easy.
02:52:28But please don't use complicated wording while describing the car color.
02:52:32Like, it's not moss, but rather dark green.
02:52:36You also need to know the year, make, and model.
02:52:39Make sure you remember all these.
02:52:41The police will also need to know your license plate number and VIN.
02:52:45If you don't remember the VIN by heart,
02:52:47write a note on your phone just in case.
02:52:50That's it for today.
