00:00And this poll ran other prominent Democrats against Trump to see where
00:06they landed in a head-to-head matchup. What are some of your takeaways there?
00:11Well I think the major takeaway is that no other candidate currently is able to
00:18match President Biden's vote share against former President Trump. So the
00:24closest that any of these hypothetical Democratic candidates get is Vice
00:29President Kamala Harris. But even then she's six points away from Donald Trump
00:35in those top lines. We see that further down as well. So Governor Newsom, he
00:43trails Trump by eight points. Governor Shapiro also trails by eight points. And
00:50then Governor Whitmer, whose name has been floated as well, she trails by ten
00:54points. So you know, I think that at least on the face of it, right now if
01:02folks are going to the polls and they were voting on one of these candidates
01:05then President Trump would be at an extreme advantage against these
01:09candidates. However, these candidates have not necessarily benefited from the same
01:15media coverage, from the fact that they are a sitting president, or from any of
01:21the ad spending that the Biden campaign and President Biden himself enjoys right
01:27now. So that's all to say, you know, some of the support might be muted. If
01:32something were to change, if one of these candidates did in fact become the
01:37Democratic nominee for president, I think that this would tighten some. And I think
01:42that there's probably more upside to certain candidates than there are others.
01:46And we can see that in this poll.
01:49But if you're the Biden campaign or President Biden himself, you're looking
01:53at these numbers and saying, hey, Democrats, listen, I know you're upset
01:58right now, you want us to win the White House, but I'm your best option compared
02:03to every other prominent Democrat, past and present that has been mentioned so
02:07far and floated as a possible replacement.
02:11Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think just taking the poll at face value and looking
02:17at just those top line numbers, yes, you can, the Biden campaign could use this as
02:22a tool to say, hey, you know, I'm your guy. But when you consider some of these
02:28other candidates who don't have the same name exposure, who aren't necessarily
02:33known outside of their state or region, and you start to look at some of that
02:39undecided vote. So Governor Shapiro, for instance, he has the highest undecided
02:44vote of all of these candidates. But that's a vote that isn't going to Donald
02:50Trump. So, you know, the same cannot be said for candidates in this poll, like
02:54former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Folks know who she is, by and
03:00large. There are new voters out there who don't necessarily have a formed opinion
03:04of her. But she obviously moved some folks towards the Trump camp. But that
03:09can't be said for some of these other more blank slate candidates, if we want
03:14to call them that. So, yeah, I think that that is one way to spin the results. And
03:20the Biden campaign would be correct in reporting it that way, I suppose. But
03:27there are other ways to report this as well.
