00:00Two of the Premiership Giants clashed at Highbury on the 28th of August 1999.
00:05Between them, Arsenal and Manchester United had won 18 major honours during the 90s.
00:10The game also boasted the most prolific attack and the meanest of defences in English football.
00:15United had scored 80 goals the previous season, while Arsenal had conceded only 17.
00:20Thierry Henry was one of the new Galaxy of Stars.
00:23At Highbury, he joined the club from Juventus in the summer.
00:27Arsenal were without five key players.
00:29Their DOS goalkeeper David Seaman, skipper Tony Adams and left-back Nigel Winterburn.
00:33Midfielder Emmanuel Petit was also injured, while Mark Overmaars started on the bench.
00:38Much for Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton to discuss.
00:42United were without Mark Bosnich.
00:44Raymond van der Gouw replaced him in goal.
00:46Phil Neville continued to stand in for brother Gary.
00:49And Henning Berg took the place of fellow Norwegian international Ronny Jonsson.
00:53The Arsenal fans were full of hope, but United hadn't lost a league game in 1999.
00:58Your commentator in North London is Alan Parry.
01:23And that effort never really likely to trouble van der Gouw.
01:53And the challenges continue to thump in, in that middle third of the field.
02:05The grim-faced Alex Ferguson looks on.
02:08Beckham. And Beckham was fouled.
02:17The Manchester United fans on that far side, not too convinced about it.
02:22But the referee had no hesitation.
02:29Jaap Stam making his way forward for the free kick, which Beckham, I guess, will take himself.
02:36The other option alongside him, Ryan Giggs.
02:42It is Beckham, though, and it's a beauty.
02:43And Cole's header hits the bar.
02:46Arsenal close to conceding the first goal of the game.
02:53Andy Cole so dismayed that that stayed out, as Erwin finds Scholes.
02:59On it goes to Keane.
03:03Scholes winning it back again, but he's given it away inadvertently there to Kanu.
03:07And on it goes to Thierry Henry, who's got the pace to keep going here.
03:10Good save by van der Gouw.
03:12Well, talk about end-to-end action.
03:15They almost had a goal for both teams.
03:19Great break here, lovely ball.
03:21And Henry, once he gets in behind the last defender like that, usually doesn't miss.
03:25He did this time.
03:27Scholes.
03:30Good header on.
03:32Finds Bergkamp.
03:35Henry ready for the return ball.
03:37Bergkamp decided to go for goal.
03:40That wasn't far away.
03:46Beautiful curl on that shot there, as you can see from the slow-mo.
03:54Scholes.
03:56This is Cole.
03:58Now Beckham.
04:00The through ball for Giggs is brilliant.
04:04Well.
04:07Ryan Giggs, of all people, to miss what was, at this high standard, a relatively simple chance here.
04:14It's a lovely ball by Beckham, and the awareness in running off the ball shown by Giggs was excellent, but the finish wasn't.
04:24Really thought he was going to hit the target here, Ryan Giggs.
04:29Scholes.
04:31Challenged by Parler, now Giggs.
04:33Dwight York, a lovely reverse ball.
04:36Giggs will have to motor to keep this in.
04:41Lost the race.
05:02Bergkamp touching it on to Kanu.
05:06By Bergen, it's an instant free kick that releases Bergkamp.
05:09He's got Henry up with him.
05:11Didn't see him.
05:12Went for goal himself.
05:14And Henry might have been better placed, but you can hardly question Dennis Bergkamp when you look at his goal-scoring record.
05:2016 last season.
05:22Only Niklas and Elke scored more.
05:32Jungberg.
05:34Kanu takes over.
05:41He's done brilliantly here.
05:42Kanu, and what a shot!
05:44Oh, that would have been one of the goals of the season if Raymond van der Haal hadn't produced such a brilliant save.
05:53Fabulous skill from Kanu.
05:56He was so far out there, that was heading for the top of the net.
06:02Oh, even Mark Bosnitz, or indeed Peter Schmeichel, couldn't have bettered that.
06:13Vieira.
06:17Silvinho.
06:21Vieira again.
06:25Upson flicks it on.
06:28Beckham up against Bergkamp, facing his own goal.
06:30Unusual for David Beckham, but how well he coped.
06:36And he's still motoring forward onto the return ball.
06:39It was a good challenge by Upson to stop him.
06:53Andy Cole.
06:57Here's Beckham, giving away to Henry.
07:05It's one of the narrower pitches in the division here at Highbury, so wide players like David Beckham, Henry, and the opposition don't get much room to manoeuvre.
07:24Keown has lost the battle there, and Andy Cole is in a great position.
07:27Oh, well played, Meninger. That all happened so suddenly.
07:32Keown, for once, being beaten.
07:35And at the other end, Patrick Vieira threatening.
07:38That's a foul.
07:40Foul on Stam.
07:52Beckham's through ball.
07:53Oh, that was an important header by Keown, but they've got it back here, Manchester United.
07:57Scoles lay-off.
07:59Dwight York hits it.
08:00And again, the goalkeeper has kept Arsenal in it.
08:07Well, Dwight York must have thought another goal was on the way here.
08:18The goalkeeper stranded there, though.
08:21And Arsenal just about survive.
08:26Lenningberg close.
08:28Goalkeeper couldn't find a way through the crowd.
08:32And it looked for a moment as though Manchester United were going to take the lead here.
08:39Stam's header.
08:43Dixon.
08:45Good ball for Kanu.
08:46Beckham can mark if he sees him.
08:48And he has.
08:49And on it goes to Jungberg.
08:51He's scored.
08:55He loves playing against Manchester United.
08:58Two goals in his Highbury career, and they've both come against their biggest rivals.
09:06Four minutes of the half remaining.
09:08Arsenal draw first blood.
09:12Kanu inevitably playing an important part in the goal.
09:16So too did Dennis Bergkamp.
09:18A finish as cool as you like from the young Swede, Fredrik Jungberg.
09:32Good ball from Dwight York.
09:34Neville.
09:35This is Beckham.
09:36The whistle approaching as it's played into the middle.
09:40In the right place to get it clear.
09:57Manchester United get another free kick.
10:02According to my watch.
10:04That's the end of the added time now, so.
10:09There will literally be only a matter of a handful of seconds remaining.
10:17Beckham will take the free kick.
10:22Arsenal defended well.
10:23Scoles back into the crowd.
10:25And Keown just about got it clear, but it's only gone as far as gigs.
10:31Keown's there again.
10:33And now the referee finally does blow the halftime whistle.
10:36And all around the stadium, apart from the tiny corner where the Manchester United fans are housed.
10:42Fans stand to applaud Arsenal off the field.
10:46And in particular, Fredrik Jungberg for his goal five minutes before halftime.
10:52Raymond van der Haal in the Manchester United goal.
10:55And Alex Meninga guarding Arsenal's net.
10:57Both had outstanding displays in that first 45 minutes.
11:01That's the only reason that we didn't have more goals to enjoy.
11:05But certainly Jungberg enjoyed his only a second ever as an Arsenal player.
11:10And as I mentioned, the first also came against Manchester United.
11:14There's a good quiz question for you.
11:16Terrific first half here.
11:18We're already looking forward to the second 45 minutes at Highbury.
11:21But the score at halftime.
11:23Arsenal 1, Manchester United 0.
11:35Silvinho, the left-back replacement for Nigel Winterburn.
11:39With a through ball over the head of Kanu.
11:41Guided back by Jaap Stam.
11:46Henning Berg for Manchester United.
11:49And here's Dwight York.
11:50One back off him by Upson.
11:51Silvinho releases it.
11:53Keane can't keep possession.
11:58Battle for the tackles in the middle of the field.
12:01This time goes Manchester United's way.
12:03They've been given the free kick.
12:06United winning their fifth Premiership title in seven seasons since the league was formed.
12:12And runner-up on the other two occasions.
12:16They've been champions in England three times in the last four seasons.
12:20Manchester United, an unbelievable record.
12:25But even when they won the title last season, they lost here.
12:28Trying to get back on level terms now.
12:31As York fails to find a way through.
12:46Here's Scholes.
12:48Giggs offside.
12:51And one thing that Manchester United haven't achieved today
12:54is to find a way round Arsenal's swift-moving offside trap.
13:01They've fallen into that far too often, I would think, for Alex Ferguson's liking.
13:05Henri.
13:07Headed away by Berg.
13:10Headed away by Berg.
13:15Silvinho.
13:17Henri.
13:18Good quick interpassing in the middle of the field.
13:20Patrick Vieira.
13:22Kanu.
13:25And again, the big Nigerian.
13:27Such a deft touch for such a tall man.
13:32Here's Silvinho.
13:37Given away to Keane.
13:39A rare mistake in a game of excellent quality.
13:42Parler with the shot!
13:43My word, that was close.
13:46Explosive finish there from Ray Parler, who ended last season in great goalscoring form.
13:51Scored six times in the final 15 games in the Premiership.
14:06Keown.
14:08Brilliant.
14:09Just got caught on the ankle.
14:10Limping as Bergkamp carries on the attack.
14:13Oh!
14:14That produced another fine save by Raymond van der Haal.
14:20Well, van der Haal's never made more than two consecutive appearances
14:23in his four seasons at Manchester United.
14:25He's going to have to now, because Bosnich is going to be out for a while yet.
14:30But he has produced an excellent display here today, the 34-year-old.
14:38But even he would have been powerless to stop that going in,
14:42as Matthew Upson met the flick on.
14:45Now Bergkamp.
14:48Bergkamp goes down, but the referee's actually given the free kick the other way.
14:51But Arsenal, so unlucky not to increase their lead here.
14:55And it came from an unlikely source in the 20-year-old Matthew Upson.
15:03And Manchester United have had a let-off.
15:05And go forward dangerously themselves.
15:09Ryan Giggs.
15:12Scholes.
15:14Here's Beckham.
15:16Cole on the far post, York taps it in,
15:18but the linesman's flag immediately rules out the celebration.
15:23I just wonder if he'd have let the header from Andy Cole go into the net
15:28without applying the finishing touch,
15:30whether the same decision would have happened.
15:32Let's have a look at the replay here.
15:34Lovely ball, wasn't it, by Beckham.
15:36Then the header by Cole.
15:38Well, actually, it would never have gone in anyway,
15:40and it almost brushed the arm too, you have to say, there, of Keown.
15:49Here's Vieira.
15:51Scholes wins it back.
15:52Roy Keane plays it on.
15:54The lay-off by Cole. Keane's there!
15:58Manchester United have equalised.
16:00Manchester United have equalised.
16:02Through the captain, Roy Keane.
16:08Excellent build-up.
16:09Crisp finish.
16:11And Arsenal's lead has been demolished.
16:16Roy Keane's first goal of the new season.
16:20And even Arsenal's defence, powerless to prevent it.
16:24He started the move as well.
16:26Lovely little return ball by Cole.
16:28He'd just kept on running, Keane,
16:30so there was no chance of him being offside
16:32as Cole slipped it through here.
16:34It came from behind the defenders onto the through ball
16:37and finished calmly.
16:39And Alex Ferguson was out of his seat to celebrate.
16:43And this is Patrick Vieira.
16:45Youngberg down the right, being urged by the Arsenal bench
16:48to take on the nearest man, who is Ryan Giggs.
16:51And he's delivered.
16:58Vieira.
17:01Youngberg lost his man beautifully then.
17:05The ball to Henry.
17:07Bergkamp straight into the hands of van der Haal.
17:11Poor angle, really, for Dennis Bergkamp
17:13to get any power or pace on the header.
17:16Beckham for Manchester United.
17:19Glorious ball that was to Dwight York.
17:22Keane's defending has been outstanding today.
17:26Haal has given it away, though.
17:30Dwight York again.
17:31Here's Ryan Giggs.
17:32Lovely little touch.
17:33Nicky Butts there.
17:34York.
17:35Vieira's challenge.
17:36Did brilliantly there, Vieira.
17:38Wanted that ball to be his.
17:40Now, Dennis Bergkamp.
17:43And Vieira's continued his run,
17:45but Stam at the pace
17:47to get Manchester United out of trouble there.
17:56Vieira.
17:57Overmars.
18:00Schüker.
18:02My word.
18:04That would have been the debut goal
18:06to top them all if it had gone in.
18:08It must have been all of 35, if not 40 yards from goal.
18:13Look at that.
18:14It was only just over the halfway line.
18:16Incredible effort.
18:17Incredibly wide, it has to be said as well,
18:19but it was a great effort.
18:22Incredible effort.
18:23Incredibly wide, it has to be said as well,
18:25but a confident start.
18:32Here's Sheringham.
18:33The other substitute.
18:35Giggs.
18:38Good run by Ryan Giggs.
18:39He's been forced wide, though.
18:44Keown almost inevitably there to clear.
18:49Ewing couldn't keep it in play.
18:50Alex Ferguson's not too happy with the referee
18:52over something that happened there
18:54with Giggs on the far side.
18:58And Alex Ferguson never slow
19:01to let officials know what he thinks.
19:04And the fourth official
19:05waves him back onto his seat.
19:08Dwight York.
19:10Beckham to his right.
19:13And gets possession now.
19:15Three in the box for Manchester United.
19:17York's one of them.
19:20Big appeal for a penalty as Nicky Buck went down.
19:23Then Beckham goes down.
19:24Keown and Vieira clash.
19:26Giggs in possession.
19:28And the referee saw what went on there
19:30between Keown and Vieira.
19:31How is he going to deal with it?
19:36Vieira just letting his temper get the better of him
19:38in the last few minutes.
19:39And he and Stam have a confrontation.
19:42Well, I'm afraid this is not the first time
19:44we've seen scenes of a similar nature
19:47when these two teams meet.
19:48And the referee's got some sorting out to do here.
19:51And I wouldn't be surprised
19:53if a red card is flourished.
20:00Not like Jeff Stam.
20:01He's normally a very calm, cool customer, I have to say.
20:04I've never seen him react quite like that before.
20:07It was a head-to-head confrontation
20:09between him and Vieira.
20:11Now the referee being surrounded by players
20:14has got some difficult decisions to make,
20:16Gray and Paul.
20:18That was the first challenge by Vieira.
20:21Then he and Keown clash.
20:23Keown almost retaliated.
20:25And Vieira should be in trouble for that.
20:27He was the aggressor there, without doubt.
20:42Dwight York
20:44looking for Beckham.
20:49Good challenge by Silvinho.
20:51Now Vieira.
20:55Good ball.
20:56A lovely little header as well.
20:58Paul is dispossessed though by Giggs.
21:00Danger here for Arsenal.
21:01Ryan Giggs hits it.
21:02And it comes to Roy Keown.
21:04And Keown has slipped home the winner.
21:06Surely.
21:09Two and a half minutes to go.
21:11The captain gets his second goal of the game.
21:14And Manchester United players and fans
21:16celebrate.
21:20And Arsenal caught cold.
21:23Parler.
21:24One of those responsible for the errors
21:27in particular
21:29being dispossessed there by Ryan Giggs.
21:34He tried to shoot.
21:35The ball deflected straight into the path of Roy Keown.
21:38And there was never any doubt
21:40that Keown was going to slide it home
21:42for his second goal of the game,
21:43his second goal of the season.
21:45And surely the winner.
21:49But it's not very often
21:51that Arsenal can see two goals
21:53in any match.
22:00Youngberg.
22:01Clever.
22:04But Berg and Stam have been pretty immovable objects
22:07in Manchester United's defence today.
22:10Well, I left my watch running
22:12and it's now showing 49 minutes.
22:16This could be the last meaningful action here
22:19for Arsenal.
22:20They have a free kick.
22:22It might be their final hope
22:24of an equalising goal.
22:29And the header by Upson.
22:31Saved.
22:32But on the line turned in.
22:34What will the referee give?
22:36On the line turned in.
22:38What will the referee give here?
22:42I don't think he's allowed it.
22:47Well, a moment of real controversy.
22:51Calm down is his instruction to everyone.
22:53He's gone across to his linesman
22:56to find out what his view of the incident was.
23:00Well, a real major talking point at the end here.
23:04Martin Keown told to go away.
23:06What's the linesman's view?
23:08I don't think he's allowed the goal.
23:10That's for sure.
23:17Now Arsenal players go to the linesman concerned.
23:20But you can tell from the body language there
23:23that that goal has not been allowed.
23:25Presumably.
23:26Let's have a look at it again here.
23:28The referee deciding there was a foul.
23:30Now, it was right on the line there.
23:32He had a hand on the ball as Keown turned it in.
23:35Now, Keown will feel that that ball was there
23:38to be turned over.
23:40But the referee will feel that van der Hau
23:43had both hands on the ball
23:45and therefore was in possession.
23:50And that that was a foul.
23:51Well, what a story we've got here.
23:54Because with Mark Bosnich out injured,
23:56Manchester United have now lost
23:58their number two goalkeeper, Raymond van der Hau.
24:01And Nicky Culkin, who's only 20
24:04and who has never played in a first team match,
24:07he's played in a couple of pre-season friendlies and the like,
24:10but he's never played in a competitive fixture
24:12for Manchester United,
24:13comes on for what I think might be
24:16the shortest debut in history.
24:19Because I would strongly believe
24:21that the referee will blow the whistle here.
24:24Well, of course, there'll be some time to be added
24:26for this stoppage to van der Hau.
24:29Van der Hau clearly has got
24:30a pretty horrible knock in the face there.
24:33But there can only be three or four seconds to go.
24:37So here's Culkin's first kick in Premiership football
24:40and there is the whistle as I expected.
24:42That is the briefest debut in history.
24:44Culkin's come on, kicked the ball once.
24:47The final whistle's blown.
24:48Final score in the biggest game of the season so far
24:52in the English Premiership, Arsenal 1,
24:55Manchester United 2.
24:57Indeed, it did prove to be the briefest of debuts
25:00for Nick Culkin and he never appeared
25:02in a Premiership game again.
25:04The Red Devils continued their domination
25:06of the English game and romped to the title
25:09ahead of Arsenal.
25:10They'd only just pipped them to the post
25:11the previous season when one point
25:13separated the two sides.
25:15This time, however, United excelled themselves
25:18and finished with 91 points.
