00:00Ranger Bill, warrior of the woodland, struggling against extreme odds, traveling dangerous
00:26trails, fighting the many enemies of nature.
00:29This is the job of the guardian of the forest, Ranger Bill.
00:34Pouring rain, freezing cold, blistering heat, snow, floods, bears, rattlesnakes, mountain
00:40lions.
00:41Yes, all this in exchange for the satisfaction and pride of a job well done.
00:56Crisp fall days mean only one thing, football.
01:01When the pigskin parade is on across the nation, fighting eleven swarm over the grid irons.
01:07In today's story, Henry and I are up north at Brighton College.
01:12It's my old alma mater, and the event is homecoming.
01:17It's always a great time, except in today's story, when it's arson at Brighton College.
01:26Yeah, operator.
01:29That's right, Henry Scott.
01:31He'll be up at Ranger Headquarters, Knotty Pine.
01:34No, I don't know the number, but thanks.
01:38Oh, thanks, operator.
01:41Hello?
01:42Hey, hi, Henry.
01:45Fine.
01:46I just got your letter today.
01:48Sure am glad you're coming up for homecoming.
01:50Yeah, I called to see where you were staying.
01:52I thought maybe I could put you up here at our house.
01:55Oh, you and Mr. Jefferson already have arrangements?
01:59Well, I just wanted to say, too, that I'll have my dad's car and I'll take you out for
02:03a buzz around town.
02:05Okay, great.
02:06Uh-huh.
02:07Yeah, fine.
02:08Okay, be seeing you then.
02:10So long.
02:11Ron.
02:12Huh?
02:13Oh, hi, Dad.
02:14Sorry, son.
02:15I didn't mean to break in on your conversation, but you won't be having the car.
02:22But, Dad, I just promised Henry Scott that I'd take him out when he got here.
02:27Sorry, but you know why.
02:29Well, yeah, but look, aren't you even going to...
02:33Ron, you agreed yourself that it was absolutely fair of me to withhold the use of the car
02:38for one month.
02:40Well, the month is not yet up.
02:43Yeah, I guess you're right.
02:45Oh, what a knucklehead I am.
02:47Wrecked the car at just the wrong time.
02:50So I can't have a good time with a pal.
02:52Ronnie, the sooner you learn to stop and think, the sooner you won't find yourself in so many
02:58jams.
02:59And you'll find life a lot more pleasant.
03:13Bill, we want you to have a good time up there at Brighton.
03:17I'm glad you're taking off today to give us a little peace around here.
03:21What's the matter, Stumpy?
03:22Bill been working you too hard?
03:24Of course not.
03:25Gray Wolf and I can handle anything that comes up.
03:28Now, that right.
03:29You have good time now.
03:31We will.
03:32But if you think you might need a little assistance in case of an emergency, just call Brighton
03:37College and they'll be able to contact us.
03:39Maybe you, not me.
03:41I'm planning on taking a vacation, forest ranger or not.
03:44You know, it's a good thing you're just sort of an ex-officio member of this ranger outfit,
03:49Henry, or I'd have your badge right here and now on the spot.
03:54That's the spirit, Bill.
03:56Don't let these young whippersnappers get away with anything.
03:59Must have discipline in this work.
04:01Maybe Henry's getting to be too much like that young bear cub that just called him on the
04:06phone yesterday.
04:07You mean Ronnie Winters?
04:08He's got a point there.
04:10Oh, Ronnie's just a lot of energy.
04:12He's a lot of fun.
04:13Yeah, guys who are a lot of fun can get on the borderline and into trouble, too.
04:18Well, you know, Stumpy, Henry can take care of himself.
04:22Ah, Henry Goodboy.
04:24Hey, what is this?
04:25A meeting of the Parent Teacher Society?
04:27No offense, Henry.
04:29Stumpy just has your interests at heart.
04:32Ah, he's just reading our local sports editor.
04:35He's disgusted because Ronnie plays kind of crazy football once in a while.
04:39But he's a good sportsman, and he sure can swim.
04:43I know.
04:44Well, mind yourselves, and you better get going.
04:47You're going to miss that game.
04:56Oh, but sis, maybe you can talk to dad.
04:59I need that car.
05:00Well, this guy Henry Scott's coming up here, and I'd like to show him around.
05:04Well, just why is he so important?
05:05Why, he's a fellow that swam against me in the swimming meet last year.
05:09Well, I think it'd be nice to get to know him.
05:11Did he beat you?
05:12Oh, no, no, I took him.
05:14But he's a good sport and a great guy.
05:16So, look, Pat, you ask dad for me, won't you?
05:19No, Ron.
05:20I'm sorry.
05:21I wish I could help you, but, well, you know what dad would say,
05:24and I'm not going to get in on your problem with him.
05:27I hate to sound like a big sister, but you'll just have to learn how to use your own head.
05:35This is quite a game, folks, quite a game.
05:38It's 19 to 13, state U out ahead.
05:41But the ball is resting on the one-foot line with one minute to go.
05:44Brighton has completed a 69-yard drive down the field,
05:47and this tired team is really sparking.
05:49Team breaks huddle.
05:50Brighton up with a T formation.
05:52Hauser calling signals.
05:53The snap, and it's Hauser through the right side of the line.
05:55He's smashed at the line of scrimmage.
05:57Could he make it or not?
05:59Ref's in there trying to unpile.
06:02It is.
06:03A touchdown for Brighton.
06:04Hauser in a magnificent power drive.
06:06Put it over.
06:07Uh-oh.
06:08Wilton's down.
06:10Brighton's right end is really flat.
06:12Hurt on that last play.
06:14Nope.
06:15He can't continue.
06:16There will be a substitution.
06:18Attention, please.
06:20Here comes the announcement.
06:21Your attention, please.
06:23Winners for Wilton at right end, Hauser.
06:27Your attention, please.
06:29Winners for Wilton at right end.
06:31Winners for Wilton, right end.
06:36That's it.
06:37Ron Winters of Prexy Sun,
06:39a good little ball player going in to replace Wilton.
06:42Teams are lining up again.
06:44It's Wyszkowski back for the extra point.
06:46Sellers will be holding.
06:47The whole crowd waiting to see if this will do it.
06:49It's 19 to 19, 15 seconds left in the game.
06:53The center's over the ball.
06:54The snap, it's placed, and it's off.
06:56Oh, no, it's blocked.
06:58Somebody broke through right end
06:59and slapped the ball just enough to send it offline.
07:04That's it, the game's over.
07:06Tie score, Brighton 19 and State U 19.
07:10Too bad.
07:11Brighton could have had the game
07:12if substitute winners had held that right end.
07:16How about it, Bill?
07:18They lost.
07:19No, not lost, Henry.
07:21They tied.
07:22But the conference hall is all tied up.
07:24That means that it's...
07:26Hey, there's Ronnie.
07:27Hey, Ron.
07:28Hi, Henry.
07:29See you later.
07:31He sure is glum.
07:33Well, any fellow that has the bad breaks he seems to have
07:36would take it all for himself.
07:38I don't know about you, Bill,
07:39but I don't think that's a good idea.
07:42If anyone has the bad breaks he seems to have
07:44would take it awfully hard.
07:47I guess those State U boys just caught him off guard.
07:50Before he could catch on, they'd blocked the kick.
07:53Poor Ron.
07:54Never seems to do anything right.
08:06I'd like to have you meet my friend,
08:07Ranger Bill Jefferson.
08:09This is Ronnie Winters.
08:10How do you do, Ronnie?
08:11I've heard a lot about you,
08:12but I'd like to have my sis meet you fellas.
08:15Pat, this is Mr. Jefferson and Henry Scott.
08:17How do you do?
08:18I'm happy to meet you.
08:19Ronnie's spoken of you both.
08:21And Ron, you're President Winters' son, aren't you?
08:24Yes, but I try to forget.
08:26Seems as if the props have.
08:28Say, I guess I should take you fellas under my wing
08:31since you are our guests.
08:32Oh, thanks, but I know you and Henry have lots to talk over,
08:35and I see some of my old classmates over there.
08:38Okay.
08:39Fine.
08:40Look who's talking.
08:41See you back in the room.
08:43He seems to be an awfully nice man.
08:44Oh, none better than Ranger Bill.
08:46Best ranger in the state.
08:48Well, come on, let's get going.
08:49They're holding up the proceedings for us.
08:59Oh, terrific meal, huh?
09:01Sure not like most college banquets.
09:03This is the kind of food they serve here.
09:05Maybe I'll think about making this my college.
09:07Well, not so all the time.
09:09Cafeterias get a little boring.
09:11Gravy, please, Ronnie.
09:13I'll take some, too, when you're finished.
09:14Okay, here you are.
09:15Watch it!
09:16Oh, I'm sorry.
09:18Oh, Ron, right on your new trousers.
09:20I'm sorry.
09:21I should have grabbed it sooner.
09:23It wasn't your fault.
09:24I'm just a butterfingers.
09:25Maybe you can get it out right after the banquet.
09:27Yeah, I can get it clean.
09:29It won't hurt a thing.
09:40Boy, some banquet.
09:42Yeah, the best part of it was the short speeches.
09:45I sure hope Pat didn't mind my horning in.
09:47Oh, not at all.
09:48She was the one horning in.
09:50Didn't get invited out this year,
09:51so I told her to come along.
09:53I'm upstairs here in the converted army barracks.
09:55Yeah, sorry we had to put you up there.
09:57They're long overdue for raising,
09:59but Dad hasn't been able to get enough funds
10:01to start another dorm.
10:03Oh, they've been fine.
10:04Neat and clean.
10:05Hey, I think I'll take a look downstairs
10:07in the janitor's room for something
10:08I can clean these pants with.
10:10I just hope old Ed Howard isn't around.
10:12He's always jumping us boys for invading his premises.
10:16Good.
10:17See you later, Ron.
10:18Maybe tomorrow.
10:19Okay with me.
10:20You'll get a chance then
10:21to go through some of the buildings.
10:24Ah, where is that light?
10:26Ah, here it is.
10:29Now to find the fluid.
10:33Oh, hello, Henry.
10:35Have a good time?
10:36Yeah, thanks.

20:42Well, Mr. Brown, the state's attorney's office can be assured of absolute cooperation.
20:48The man that just left, Mr. Conway and Stouffer assured you of that, too.
20:53And my son should be here any time and he'll help.
20:57But we've got to act faster.
20:58Can't you get the students together and see if there are any clues we can turn up?
21:02Well, it's afternoon and they're scattered all over the city in employment.
21:07But don't you realize the man is almost dead?
21:10He's as good as dead.
21:11Well, we'll plan on a meeting tonight when the whole student body, as many of them as can be here, will be present.
21:18The rest we'll meet tomorrow.
21:22Yeah, I feel lots better now, Pat.
21:24Thanks for boosting my morale a little by walking over here with me.
21:28Now hurry up and get in and tell him.
21:30I will.
21:31See you at home.
21:32I hope you bring home good news.
21:34I'll be there with bells on.
21:36Dead, as good as dead.
21:38Dead?
21:39I've got to get out of here.
21:54So the state's attorney wants us to give some information about the fire, huh?
21:57Yeah, just a routine check, I guess.
21:59Did he say they have any new evidence?
22:01No, not a bit.
22:02Huh?
22:03I wonder how that old janitor is.
22:05Pretty low, I guess.
22:06Well, I sure liked him.
22:08Hey, watch out for that crazy guy.
22:10Yep.
22:11Man.
22:12I guess I about got hit.
22:14Bill, you know who that was?
22:16No.
22:17It was Ronnie Winters.
22:18Ronnie Winters?
22:19Yeah, and he looked scared to death.
22:20I'll make a U-turn.
22:22We're going to follow him and get him to cut down that speed.
22:25Why in the world would he be tearing away like that?
22:34Can't seem to overtake him.
22:36Well, don't forget, he got a good start on us when we turned around.
22:39Yeah.
22:40Bill?
22:41Yeah?
22:42Was you supposed to have something to do with the fire?
22:44I don't know, pal.
22:45But I sure aim to find out.
22:57Yeah, just as I thought.
22:59That patrol car.
23:00Yeah, just as I thought.
23:02That patrol car's following me.
23:04But I'm going to shake him and get away.
23:20We're gaining on him now.
23:22Sure are.
23:23This hilly, curvy country is making him slow down.
23:26I don't think he knows the road as well here.
23:28That's it.
23:29Oh, look.
23:30He's heading down that hill too fast.
23:32He'll never make the curve at the bottom.
23:34I can't look.
23:35Hang on, Henry.
23:36Here we go, too.
23:41He didn't make it.
23:43Look what's coming up ahead.
23:44Yeah.
23:45The curve where those fellas died last month.
23:48Henry, we've got to force him to stop before he cracks up.
23:53Shout at him as we go by.
23:55Okay.
23:56All right, now.
23:57Pull over, Ronnie.
23:58Henry!
23:59Come on, pull over.
24:00You're going to hurt yourself.
24:01No one's going to catch me.
24:02Hang on, pal.
24:03I'm going to force him.
24:04Look out.
24:05He's leaving the road.
24:17Can you see him, Henry?
24:18Yeah, here he is.
24:19He sure took the bark off that tree.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Let me get this door open.
24:28Oh, my head.
24:29Ronnie, are you all right?
24:32I guess so.
24:33If you can move, see if you can crawl out.
24:40Oh, I feel weak.
24:42All right, let's see.
24:46You look okay.
24:48Now, Ronnie, what were you doing?
24:50I was just taking a trip.
24:52Going off you fast.
24:54You sure were, Ron.
24:55I guess I was.
24:57You could have really hurt yourself.
24:59Not to mention the blood all over your clothes and the car.
25:03Don't even like to talk about it.
25:05Only it wouldn't be like that gravy you spilled on your pants the other night.
25:09Say, those are the ones, aren't they?
25:11Yeah.
25:12Well, where's the spot?
25:14I've taken it off, but...
25:17but I still can't seem to get rid of it.
25:19Huh?
25:20I don't get you.
25:22You feeling woozy?
25:23Oh, no, I'm all right, but...
25:25But what?
25:26Oh, can you fellas help me out?
25:28I'm in an awful jam.
25:30It's that fire.
25:31What is it, Ronnie?
25:32I've been scared of telling, but...
25:34with Dad's car all smashed up, I'm gonna have to make an explanation.
25:38Go on, Ronnie, we're listening.
25:40I was down in the basement cleaning my trousers when it all happened.
25:44You were?
25:45Everything would have been all right.
25:47But a fuse blew or something.
25:49A fuse must have blown because the light went out.
25:52I got up to fix them and knocked over the fluid.
25:55Then Ed Howard came in, and before I could stop him, he lit a match.
25:59He got it.
26:01Yeah.
26:02I guess he was pretty bad.
26:04I guess I'm at fault, too.
26:07You didn't have anything to do with it.
26:09I blew the fuse.
26:12Come on, fellas.
26:14We've got to get back to Brownsville and get this whole thing settled.
26:18Looks as if we're going to get some help.
26:26Ronnie!
26:27Son, are you all right?
26:28Oh, thank goodness you aren't hurt.
26:30Well, there isn't much to say.
26:32I suppose Pat has told you.
26:34No, I haven't.
26:35That's your job, Ron.
26:36Well, Dad, I was in the basement using cleaning fluid when the lights went out and a fuse blown.
26:43And that's where we come in.
26:45We were responsible for that.
26:47And in looking for the light, the fluid bottle got broken.
26:50And Ed Howard came in and lit a match to find the fuse box.
26:54And that's it.
26:55Oh, I'm sorry, son.
26:57Only I wish you'd come to me sooner.
26:59Would have saved a lot of trouble.
27:01And, Ronnie, I stopped in at the hospital to see how Mr. Howard was.
27:05And the report's better.
27:06Well, how'd you know Ronnie came out here?
27:08We only passed him by accident.
27:10Well, I was just coming out of the hospital when I saw him racing out of town.
27:13And so I ran to get Dad.
27:14Come on.
27:15The job isn't finished yet.
27:17Ronnie, we've got to get you to a doctor for a checkup.
27:20And stop the state's attorney in his hunt for an arsonist.
