Ticket Security at Big Events: Planning and Challenges

00:00It was very frightening, but what you had was people who did not have tickets trying
00:08to get in without having tickets.
00:10And you don't see that a lot at American football games.
00:14You don't often see it at soccer games here either.
00:17But a big event like this, people who weren't ticketed wanted to try to get in, and many
00:22of them were successful.
00:24But you plan for that.
00:26You know this, Scott.
00:27You go to the Super Bowl, you can't get within a mile of the place unless you're ticketed
00:32or credentialed.
00:33They won't let you through.
00:35They put up perimeters.
00:36And that happens at the World Cup too.
00:38When I went in 2006 with my wife to Germany to Kaiserslautern for the game between the
00:43United States and Italy, we were not permitted into the area where the stadium was until
00:49we showed the ticket that would ultimately get us in the game.
00:53That's how you plan for these things.
00:56And Conmebol did not plan for the possibility, even though, as I said, something very similar
01:01happened at the Euro 2021 final, it was technically the Euro 2020 tournament, but it was in 21.
01:08And then it happened again in Paris with the UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool
01:13and Real Madrid.
01:14It happens from time to time, and you have to be prepared for that, and you have to set
01:19up those perimeters so that no one who doesn't have tickets can get near.
01:24And then the people who do have tickets get through the perimeter, and then ultimately
01:27they enter the stadium safely and easily.
01:30It happens at the Super Bowl every year.
01:32And it happens at a lot of other events that are big ticket items that people think the
01:38only way I'm getting in there is if I can find a way to squeeze in.
01:44It's obviously theft.
01:45I mean, that's what it is.
01:47Explaining why people try to steal some games and don't try to steal others is kind of hard
01:52to do, but you have to be prepared for the fact that this is a massive event with Messi
01:56playing and with a large crush of fans, likely, and you have to be prepared for keeping them
02:02out.
02:03And there's almost no better place to do that than Hard Rock Stadium, because there's ultimately
02:08nothing around it except highways and space, so you could easily have prevented this.
