00:00Edward was getting old, his bearings were worn, and he clanked as he puffed along.
00:06He was taking empty cattle trucks to a market town.
00:12The sun shone, birds sang.
00:17But Edward was heading for trouble.
00:20Come on, come on, he puffed.
00:22Oh, oh, oh, oh, screamed the trucks.
00:25Edward puffed and clanked, the trucks rattled and screamed.
00:30Some cows were grazing nearby.
00:32They were not used to trains.
00:34The noise and smoke disturbed them.
00:37As Edward clanked by, they broke through the fence and ran across the line.
00:42A coupling was broken and some trucks were left behind.
00:50Edward felt a jerk but didn't take much notice.
00:53He was used to trucks.
00:55Bother those trucks, he thought.
01:00Why can't they come quietly?
01:02He was at the next station before either he or his driver realized what had happened.
01:12When Gordon and Henry heard about the accident, they laughed and boasted.
01:17Fancy allowing cows to break his train.
01:20They wouldn't dare do that to us.
01:22We'd show them.
01:26Toby was cross.
01:28You couldn't help it, Edward.
01:30They've never met cows.
01:32I have and I know the trouble they are.
01:43Some days later, Gordon rushed through Edward's station.
01:46Hoop, hoop, find the cows.
01:49Hurry, hurry, hurry, puffed Gordon.
01:51Don't make such a fuss, don't make such a fuss, grumbled his coaches.
01:56A long stretch of line lay ahead.
01:58In the distance was a bridge.
02:01It seemed to Gordon that there was something on the bridge.
02:04His driver thought so too.
02:08Whoa, Gordon, he said and shut off steam.
02:12Ha, said Gordon.
02:14It's only a cow.
02:16Shoo, shoo.
02:18He moved slowly onto the bridge, but the cow wouldn't shoo.
02:23She had lost her calf and felt lonely.
02:26Moo, she said sadly.
02:29Everyone tried to send her away, but she wouldn't go.
02:34Henry arrived.
02:41What's this? A cow?
02:43I'll soon settle her.
02:45Be off, be off.
02:47Moo, said the cow.
02:49Henry backed away nervously.
02:51I don't want to hurt her.
02:59At the next station, Henry's guard told them about the cow
03:03and warned the signalman that the line was blocked.
03:08That must be Bluebell, said the porter.
03:11Her calf is here, ready to go to market.
03:15Percy will take it along.
03:29At the bridge, Bluebell was very pleased to see her calf again
03:33and the porter led them away.
03:35Moo.
03:38Moo.
03:42Not a word. Keep it dark, whispered Gordon and Henry to each other.
03:47They felt rather silly, but the story soon spread.
03:58Well, well, well, chuckled Edward.
04:01Two big engines afraid of a cow.
04:04Afraid? Rubbish, said Gordon.
04:07We didn't want the poor thing to hurt herself by running up against us.
04:12We stopped so as not to excite her.
04:15You see what I mean, my dear Edward?
04:18Yes, Gordon, said Edward.
04:21Gordon felt somehow that Edward saw only too well.
