00:00Hello everybody, and welcome back to another episode of War Thunder.
00:04Just a quick video today, because it's almost Christmas and we've got a lot of things going on, family round and all that.
00:11But today the x-ray for aircraft finally came out.
00:16We actually saw it in the dev server, but for some reason it wasn't included in patch 1.45.
00:25But they finally added it for the hangar. We haven't quite got it for the in-game yet, I don't think.
00:32So this episode I'll be looking at the x-ray, and I'll talk a little bit about the components that are in your aircraft.
00:45Now, the first thing you've got is obviously armour.
00:49Looking at the Yak-3 here, I'm having to look at it from the front because I can't really get far below on the tail, unfortunately.
00:58As you can see here we've got two armour plates.
01:01An 8.5mm thick seat, I think that's a seat.
01:07And you've got the headrest, or head armour, I'm not really sure of the technical name, which is 64mm.
01:15Obviously this is quite thick and makes it quite hard to headshot a pilot from behind.
01:22You could get a body shot from behind a bit easier, but again still 8mm thick armour.
01:29It hasn't got any bulletproof glass at the front, unfortunately.
01:34We'll go to the P-47, I believe that does have bulletproof windows.
01:40Here's the P-47.
01:43So as you can see, some aircraft like the P-47 have incredibly thick and well sloped armour.
01:50Only 38mm thick, but effective thickness from pretty much straight in front is nearly 60mm.
01:57It also has armour at the front as well as the back of the Yak-3.
02:03I'm trying to find the right button.
02:07Now that front armour doesn't protect your engine unfortunately, but it will help protect your pilot and your other components,
02:14such as the oil cooling system and the fuel tank, which we'll look at in a minute.
02:19I'm going to quickly look at the armour on the bombers quickly, just to show you how that works.
02:25Get our G8N1.
02:28Now obviously the bomber has a lot more armour.
02:33It's got armour by the front gunner, about 13mm thick.
02:37Now bomber pilots generally have the armour in the seat as well, which doesn't protect you from the front.
02:45They do get quite good protection from the back usually.
02:48The G8N1 has lots of armour.
02:53You've got the armour here just behind the pilots, and you've got the seat from the tail gunner.
03:01The side gunners also get quite good armour, about 13mm thick.
03:09And you've got the rear gunner who's also got armour.
03:12Any shots that come through here should theoretically protect the side gunners,
03:17not the rear gunner himself because he's in front of the armour,
03:20but also slow down the bullets or projectiles heading towards your pilot.
03:27I'll slow them down enough for this armour to take effect.
03:30Now some aircraft do get quite good armour.
03:35Case in point, the HS129B3.
03:39We'll just bring that up.
03:42Now this was designed to be able to take ground fire quite well.
03:47You can see it's got armour on the bottom of the engines.
03:52It's got armour over the oil filters or oil cooling system.
03:57Not the best armour in the world, but you know, quite good, 5mm.
04:02But here at the front, it's not particularly thick at the nose,
04:08but it gets thicker as you go up because of sloping.
04:11And it has 70mm thick glass, armoured glass.
04:1640mm side glass, you know, it's a well protected aircraft.
04:20And 2mm around the sides, well protected aircraft.
04:25Some, I believe, have really good armour for...
04:30I don't know if this is meant to have really good armour,
04:33or if it's a glitch on the old 28,
04:36unless it's been changed since I last checked it earlier.
04:41But you look here, 105mm thick glass.
04:48I don't know if that's a glitch or if that's meant to be like that.
04:53Basically, a shot through here would have to go through 105mm of glass,
04:59sort of exit around here, arc downwards,
05:03and then go through a further 10mm of armour before it could hit the pilot,
05:08who might survive anyway because of high vitality skills.
05:14Although if a shot managed to penetrate through this,
05:17it's probably going to be quite a big round and probably kill anything in its way.
05:22Some aircraft just do not get armour.
05:26Japan, I'm looking at you.
05:29We look at the G8, G4M1.
05:33Just doesn't have any armour.
05:36You know, most Japanese planes didn't have much armour.
05:39For the simple reason they were designed to...
05:42I think it was designed to outrun most aircraft,
05:44and they needed to get rid of a lot of weight so they could have extreme ranges.
05:49Quickly look at the Zero. Again, no armour.
05:52I'm not sure if one of the later Zeros does get armour.
05:56Quickly check that out.
05:59No, the later Zero doesn't get any either.
06:02But we're not here to look at each and every plane.
06:06Going to look at some of the modules as well involved in the aircraft
06:11that you can destroy. You know, the damage model, I suppose.
06:15Look at the I-185.
06:18Now here, you can see these huge blocks are your fuel tanks.
06:23You've got one right in front of the pilot, and you've got two in the wings.
06:27Sort of sticking out of the fuselage.
06:30You've also got your cannons. I don't think you can actually damage these,
06:33but they're shown anyway.
06:35And you've got your oil cooling system and your engine.
06:38Now, obviously, the fuel tank you've hit can do one of two things.
06:42It can either start leaking. That's not actually too bad for me.
06:46I don't mind losing a bit of fuel, especially on the aircraft that have hours worth of fuel,
06:51because that can lighten your weight and make you more manoeuvrable.
06:56In realistic, it's more of a problem because it tends to leak out a lot faster,
07:01and bigger maps, longer flight times.
07:04Obviously, you don't want to run out of fuel.
07:08But in arcade, it seems to run out slower, so it's less of an effect there.
07:15Now, you've got your oil cooling system as well.
07:18Oh, sorry, I forgot the second effect of the fuel tank.
07:20The second effect of your fuel tank being hit is, obviously, it may catch fire.
07:25Some aircraft have armour to protect your fuel tanks for this reason.
07:29There's not really any way to stop these fires.
07:32Although some fires can be stopped if you turn your engine off,
07:36going to 0% throttle and hitting the engine off, engine on button,
07:40which is I in my case, only works sometimes,
07:43but sometimes your pilot will get shot while flying a burning plane.
07:47You'll see the fire go out. It's probably because the engine's turned off,
07:50which seems to happen when you're shot or killed.
07:54As I was saying as well, you've got your oil cooling system.
07:58Now, obviously, this helps cool your engine oil,
08:01which helps keep your... Basically, if your oil gets too hot,
08:06your engine overheats, unless I'm mistaken.
08:09Again, this is more of a realistic battle simulator battle problem.
08:13I've never seen it actually have a negative effect in arcade.
08:17I've sometimes had the engine cut out,
08:19but I think that's more to do with the engine itself.
08:21I've never seen it overheat.
08:24I've done damage to people's oil cooling system,
08:26but I've seen them destroyed before the damage can have any effect.
08:32So, yeah, it doesn't really solve the problem for realistic battle again.
08:38Obviously, you've got your engine as well.
08:42If it's damaged, it produces less horsepower and then shuts down.
08:46For me, this seems to happen quite quickly.
08:49It seems to go from either light red,
08:52which doesn't really seem to have much effect,
08:55to black or dark red and then black in a few seconds,
08:59at which point you just start gradually losing speed
09:02and then your engine shuts down.
09:04Obviously, not something you want to happen.
09:07Although, like I said, it usually keeps going for a few seconds,
09:10so you can usually start at least planning your journey back to the airfield.
09:16Now, these things are the traction of control surfaces.
09:23Now, this is probably what most people don't realise.
09:27You might be flying your plane absolutely fine.
09:30You take a few shots, you've got no damage,
09:32but you lose your elevator or your rudder.
09:36What has probably happened is a bullet has severed
09:39one of these traction of control surfaces,
09:44wires or whatever they're made of.
09:47So, no actual damage to your elevator or your rudder,
09:50but you can't control it, so it just goes straight to black
09:56because, obviously, it's destroyed, more or less.
09:59You can't control it.
10:01It doesn't happen too often now.
10:03It used to happen quite a lot, I believe.
10:05Well, at least for me it did.
10:07And it's probably one of the more annoying problems
10:10because, obviously, your plane's completely fine.
10:12You've just got a severed wire, in effect.
10:18Now, you've also got your spar.
10:20I don't know if this is to do with the new damage model.
10:26I don't know if you can lose these spars
10:28or if they're what controls the lift when you get the black and damaged wings.
10:33I don't know too much about these,
10:35but I'm going to assume these are more to do with the new damage model.
10:38Maybe you can lose this spar, this part of the wing,
10:41but you keep this bit.
10:44I'm just going to assume it's to do with losing your wings
10:46and stuff like that.
10:48Because, honestly, I don't understand that.
10:50I'm not too much of an expert on these bits myself.
10:54Now, moving on to bombers.
10:56We'll go to the G8N1 because it's a big aircraft.
10:58It probably has more stuff on it to look at.
11:01I accidentally clicked the test flight by mistake.
11:05Now, again, you've got your fuel tanks.
11:08Obviously, bombers are likely to carry more fuel tanks.
11:12Here we've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
11:16Oh, they count as one.
11:19A lot of fuel tanks all along the wings, all in the fuselage,
11:24is obviously going to cause a lot of damage.
11:27It hasn't really got any armour protecting them either.
11:30Same effects as earlier, though.
11:33Again, we've got our oil cooling system.
11:36Where are you? Here.
11:38And we've got a liquid cooling system.
11:41I don't really know how that works.
11:43I assume it cools your water or something.
11:45Because you have your oil and your water, unless I'm mistaken.
11:48My apologies, I was mistaken.
11:50Just quickly checked.
11:52You have your oil and your engine that you can cool down.
11:54I assume the liquid is more for cooling the engines.
11:58Not all aircraft have these.
12:00I assume it depends on the aircraft.
12:02I assume it's going to have a similar thing to oil cooling system.
12:06Damaging that, or I assume, will overheat your engines quicker.
12:10Or cause damage to engines.
12:12That sort of stuff.
12:14Again, I don't particularly...
12:17I've not encountered these too often.
12:20Well, we only got the X-Ray today, so I've only seen them today.
12:23Didn't know they existed before.
12:25Don't know too much about them, unfortunately.
12:28Now, guns are listed.
12:30You've got your machine gun and...
12:32Well, you've got your cannons, but it doesn't actually list the cannons.
12:36For whatever reason.
12:38I assume this is maybe just to show where the gunners are.
12:41I don't think you can have the actual guns themselves destroyed.
12:45Again, that's probably just showing where the gunners are.
12:48Again, you can see these traction of control surfaces.
12:51Quickly show you some of the jets as well.
12:54Or rocket planes in this case.
12:56They may have slightly different areas to your engine.
12:59Obviously, your engine on your Ki-200 is at the back.
13:04I assume the same for the Comet.
13:07Now, I'm not sure you can actually destroy a rocket plane's engine.
13:12I've never actually gone against them, but...
13:15They only have a limited amount of fuel, so...
13:18I assume you probably could actually destroy them, but...
13:21It would probably be so rare, like...
13:24You know, I wouldn't bet on it happening.
13:27Again, with the jets...
13:30Now, you can see on the Kitsuka here, the oil cooling system and the engines are practically in the same place.
13:37So again, for jets, these may be more vulnerable.
13:40Because you fire a shot.
13:42You're not just hitting the engine, you're going to hit the oil cooling system.
13:45If you're hitting that general area.
13:47Quickly check out the bombers.
13:49It's only going to be the Canberra, really.
13:52Sorry, my froth throat's going a little bit.
13:55I'm having a bit of a sore throat today.
14:00Again, the Canberra, you've got your engines here.
14:03Fuel tanks along the wings.
14:06Spars right in the middle of the wings on here.
14:09Got a lot of fuel tanks here, actually.
14:12Doesn't actually seem to have an oil cooling system, as such.
14:15Or, if it has, I can't really see it.
14:20I assume they phase it out on jets, maybe.
14:23But then we just saw it on the Kitsuka, though, so I don't know how that works.
14:26This is the Interdictor model.
14:30So it also helps show you where the guns are, as well.
14:33Which is all good.
14:35Now, before we quickly just end this episode.
14:37We're just going to quickly look at the Sturmaffik.
14:39Because I heard that it did have quite a bit of armour on it.
14:42Just to see what the armour's like on here.
14:45Well, it takes up nearly half the aircraft.
14:50Only thin armour, though.
14:53Four millimetres around all of this area.
14:56Five here, six here.
15:01Yeah, it's got a lot of armour on it.
15:04But it's not particularly well armoured, I don't think.
15:07I think everything else is something like 8%.
15:09Oh, the back's got 12.
15:12Let's just see the modules.
15:17Wait, let me just go to the R2M a sec.
15:22That might have better armour.
15:27No, there is actually a fuel tank between the gunner and the pilot.
15:32Seems like an odd place to put it.
15:35You've got a lot of armour, but if it catches fire.
15:38You're probably going to lose your pilot and your gunner in a few seconds.
15:41Well, you'll definitely lose your gunner.
15:43He doesn't look like he's got anything.
15:45Oh, he's got a little bit of armour between it.
15:47I always just assumed it was, you know.
15:50Like the pilot was here and it just went straight to the gunner.
15:53Not to a bloody fuel tank.
15:56One last thing I'll check.
15:58I was about to end the video.
16:00If you go to the LA-5, you can get these modifications.
16:068.5mm rear armour plate replaced by 10mm.
16:1066mm armoured glass replaced with 75mm armoured glass.
16:15Customisation.
16:19The rear armour plate doesn't seem to be replaced with a 10mm armour plate.
16:27And the 66mm rear armoured glass doesn't seem to be replaced with a 70mm.
16:34Or 75mm or whatever it was.
16:37Now I'm hoping to god this is one of those things that doesn't show in the hangar.
16:43But is applied once you get into the game.
16:46Because it does actually tell you.
16:48You lose 0.1 turning time or something.
16:52The fact it's not showing here does make me wonder if I've been conned with that modification.
16:57If it doesn't actually take effect.
16:59Like I said, I am just hoping it's not showing because it's in the hangar.
17:04But anyway, I've been waffling on for a long time now.
17:07Yeah, thank you for watching.
17:09Hope you enjoyed this video.
17:10Leave a like if you like the video.
17:12Subscribe if you like these sorts of videos.
17:14Leave feedback, can always do with more feedback.
17:16Happy Christmas to everyone.
17:18Because this is probably going to be my last or second to last video before Christmas.
17:22Have a bit of a break probably.
17:24So yeah, happy Christmas everyone.
17:26Have a happy holidays and all that.
17:28And I'll see you next time.
