00:00It is the nation's bread and butter, essential hardware components on which digital technology
00:05is built, contributing close to 57% of total export receipts in the past year.
00:11And with its sights set on turning into a regional hub for smart and sustainable manufacturing
00:16and services, the need to produce at least 128,000 semiconductor and electronics engineers
00:23and technicians by 2028 is imperative.
00:27And as our Soojin Kim reports, the Philippine development plan for 2023 to 2028 dictates
00:33to more than double receipts on semiconductor chips and components to $106 billion at the
00:40end of the President's term.
00:44The Philippines is poised to be a regional hub for smart and sustainable manufacturing
00:48and services.
00:49Recognizing the critical role of skilled labor, the Philippine government has set the target
00:54of producing 128,000 semiconductor and electronics engineers and technicians by 2028.
01:14With the semiconductor and electronics industry being the top contributor to the country's
01:18total exports amounting to 56.9% or US$41.91 billion, the Philippines is marking its territory
01:27as the hub for SMS or semiconductor manufacturing services, particularly in assembly, testing,
01:33packaging, as well as EMS or electronics manufacturing services.
01:37In the Philippine Export Development Plan 2023 to 2028, the government has set the goal
01:42of doubling S&E exports amounting to more than US$106.4 billion by 2028, from last year's
01:50US$41.9 billion.
01:53Board of Investments Undersecretary Saferino Rodolfo underscores the role that manpower
01:58plays in the growth of our exports.
02:00To this thrust, the Board of Investments has tapped academic institutions including
02:25the Department of Education to bring care events and campus advocacies to junior and
02:30senior high school students.
02:31Moreover, TESDA has been tapped to capacitate more adults and young adults.
02:35The government is also continuing its diligent work in further improving the business environment
02:41through the Ease of Doing Business Act and Executive Order 18 or the Green Lanes for
02:45Strategic Investment.
