00:00The sale of a golf club, the redevelopment of a former brewery and reports on tourism
00:04featuring today's business briefing.
00:12I'm Stephen Favell
00:13And I'm Adam Beach
00:14And you've got some news for the golfers out there Adam.
00:17Yes, the future of Newark Golf Club has been secured following a deal led by Begbiz Trainer.
00:23Now the deal saves a significant number of jobs and the site actually dates back more
00:28than a century.
00:30It's been acquired by Stellar Asset Management, so it's certainly one worth reading about
00:34in today's East Midlands Newsletter.
00:36Really interesting, yes.
00:37Sticking with historic properties, in Yorkshire we've got news on the former Cannon Brewery
00:42site in Sheffield, where progress has been made on the application for its redevelopment.
00:48And that's a site that was formerly occupied by the Stones Brewery through to 1999.
00:53The buildings themselves are in a bit of a deteriorated state at the moment.
00:58The Developer Capital and Centre submitted plans last year to bring the site back into
01:02use.
01:04It's looking to develop about 500 homes with new builds as well as the conversion of some
01:09of the old brewery buildings.
01:11It's also planning new workspaces and space for independent businesses and start-ups.
01:17So hopefully some really interesting development and new business space.
01:22The plans are on the agenda at Sheffield City Council's upcoming planning committee meeting
01:27and the recommendation is for approval.
01:28So fingers crossed there should be some progress on that site soon.
01:31It'll definitely be worth looking out for the result of that.
01:34I believe you've got some tourism news for us as well.
01:39New data released by the West Midlands Growth Company has said that more than 145 million
01:44people visited the region last year.
01:47Now that's actually an increase on 2022, which is when the Commonwealth Games took place,
01:51so a really significant move forward for the tourism industry in the region.
01:56Major events that took place last year that would have boosted the numbers include the
02:00Birmingham Festival 23 and Harry Styles and the Arctic Monkeys playing at the Coventry
02:04Building Society Arena.
02:06Now I actually attended the Arctic Monkeys, so I'm part of that record figure.
02:10So you're there doing your research on the ground.
02:14Indeed, yeah.
02:15Speaking of tourism, many of you will have been in Leeds earlier this year for the UK
02:19Reef Conference.
02:20A report from Arup has now revealed some of the economic impact of that event.
02:25So back in May, about 13,000 delegates attended, and the report has found that in total the
02:32economic impact was almost 21 million.
02:35Now since the event started in 2022, that figure has grown to 38.5 million, so really
02:40kind of bringing a big boost to Leeds and West Yorkshire.
02:45It's also found that more and more delegates are staying overnight in the city, with more
02:50than half now staying for at least two nights in Leeds.
02:52So yeah, great for the city.
02:55That's great to hear.
