00:00What's it like leading a stage of the Tour de France with that crowd?
00:17Yeah, I mean the crowd is something special, you know, it's almost deafening going up this
00:22climb and just having people scream your name, it's for sure really special.
00:27Finally, the day of glory unfortunately is shattered.
00:31I don't know if disappointment is the right word, it's just bike racing at the end of
00:36the day, like, yeah, gave it everything to be in the break and I was in the break with
00:40good legs but, you know, if I was today and had legs like him then I think I'd race the
00:44same way so, yeah, there's not a lot you can do about it and I've just got to, yeah, take
00:49the good legs forward hopefully and I'm sure there'll be some more opportunities.
00:54So far this race has been very polarised, either we had a sprint or the days for Jonas
01:02and Tadej so, yeah, today it's kind of an opportunity for a breakaway and tomorrow I
01:07suppose.
01:09We have three tough climbs in the final with the bonus seconds on the second climb to the
01:13finish so it should be a breakaway day but you never know in this Tour de France.
01:24It's time to hit the Alps with a tasty appetiser to Super Devoluy before this weekend's mountain
01:50banquet.
01:51A great chance for the breakaway if they can finally escape the iron grip of the top GC
01:56teams.
02:02So we get a lot of messages from people on the parkour now that it's really open and
02:07really windy so it will be the most probably of the Tour.
02:13And Wiesma are going to put this in the gutter.
02:21And there's a rider from the back who's struggling there, Bruno Amirai.
02:25There's that wind, that three-quarter tailwind.
02:29There is a split, the echelons are starting to form at the back as riders realise they
02:34cannot stay in the string.
02:37The wind making for a fast and furious start with everybody cancelling each other out in
02:41their bid to win the stage.
02:43Finally, four men manage to eke out a small gap.
02:50Court going clear with Gregoire, Jongles and Bonneau to Wiesma-Lisapike.
02:54Fingerguards teammates were looking aggressive with Bernat and Laporte also attempting to
02:59get away.
03:00The furious pace continued with the gap never exceeding one minute.
03:03For now, Pogacar and his UAE team were just keeping an eye on things.
03:17Over 40 riders finally surge clear in a chase group with a host of big names.
03:21Some of them are from the Tour de France.
03:25Over 40 riders finally surge clear in a chase group with a host of big names.
03:30Simon Yates, Carapaz, Van Aert, Maas, Poels, Bardet and Thomas, the 2018 winner.
03:36Pogacar and Vingegaard both had men up front, so the main peloton were happy to ease off
03:41and let the escapees open up a big gap.
03:49We are now making our way into the climbs.
03:53The four leaders still together as they hit the Col Baillat with Martin and Madouas a few
03:58seconds behind.
03:59Meanwhile, the chase group was being thinned out on the climb with the peloton now over
04:04seven minutes back.
04:11On to the climb.
04:12Col de Noyer, seven and a half kilometres long.
04:15The king of the mountains is held by Romain Bardet.
04:1821 minutes, 28 seconds.
04:22Simon Yates.
04:28Let's see the chase.
04:29Carapaz had to move.
04:30There he is.
04:36One man ahead of the lead, Simon Yates.
04:39Simon Yates has decided now is the time.
04:43Today is the day.
04:45So it is.
04:46Simon Yates, Richard Carapaz.
04:53William Pui is at 15 seconds.
05:06Carapaz attacks.
05:07Huge attack of Richard Carapaz from EF Education Easy Post.
05:12The Ecuadorian eagle soars.
05:15Yates now on to the drops, fighting to stay with the Ecuadorian rider.
05:23And the attack.
05:28Pogacar looking so comfortable that he's able to now jump away.
05:33Another massive attack from the yellow jersey.
05:36Vingegaard looks around to see, is anybody with me?
05:39Remco Evenepoel now is going to go across to Tadej Pogacar.
05:43And Vingegaard is cracking on the climb.
05:47Well, Vingegaard did manage to get back on terms with Pogacar
05:50before the final climb to Superdevoluid
05:52with the help of Evenepoel and his teammate Laporte.
05:55But nobody would be catching Carapaz.
05:59Richard Carapaz.
06:01He's had the yellow jersey and now he adds the stage win.
06:05Take a bow.
06:06The Ecuadorian eagle wins stage 17.
06:10Come on Remco, go, go, go.
06:12Try.
06:13Remco Evenepoel, 36 metres.
06:16He goes clear now.
06:18And Vingegaard and Pogacar are just watching each other
06:21as this rider in the white jersey decides,
06:24let's take some time, let's see what happens.
06:2880 seconds, 80.
06:30Come on Emeka, stay in there.
06:33Super.
06:35Tadej Pogacar attacks.
06:37Goes clear now.
06:38Trying to take a symbolic few seconds from Jonas Vingegaard.
06:42He crosses the line at 7.23.
06:44Takes two seconds out of Vingegaard at 7.25.
06:57Finally a victory over the Tour de France.
07:01Finally a victory over the Tour de France.
07:04What does this victory represent?
07:07It's the best, really.
07:12A beautiful victory.
07:15I think it was one of the stages I'll remember forever.
07:21The people who follow us in Latin America will be very happy.
07:24In the end this is a representation of all of America
07:28and we're very proud to be here and represent them in the best way.
07:58Pogacar doesn't appear to be affected by yesterday's crash,
08:01adding a point to his lead over Philipsen at the intermediate sprint.
08:05All of today's mountains points went to the breakaway,
08:08so Pogacar still leads Vingegaard by 19 points.
08:14And Evan O'Paul has an even bigger lead of almost 8.5 minutes now
08:17in the youth classification.
08:28Pogacar!
