Arne Slot’s Champions League expectations discussed for first season at Liverpool
There’s no doubt that expectations set for Arne Slot will be through the roof considering he’s leading on from the great period under Jurgen Klopp, a period that fans will have to remember, took a few seasons before any silverware so they must bare with their new boss.

00:34it's a new manager not to speak well. To be quite frank, him and the new Sporting
00:39Director Richard Hughes, he gave the answers that you would expect really. Look, I think
00:45the position that Liverpool are in, he needs to just carry on the work that Jurgen Klopp
00:50has put down, to be quite frank. The expectation of Jurgen Klopp every year wasn't, let's
00:56go and win three or four trophies. It was, what can we do? Can we challenge Man City?
01:02Can we challenge for silverware? Arnie Slott, that would be his remit as well because Liverpool
01:08have got themselves into a position as a club where they're back at the top of the European
01:14elite, increased their revenues manifold and have attracted top players to the club. That's
01:23where Liverpool need to stay now because they obviously had that period after the dominance
01:27in the 80s where they were in the doldrums somewhat because a lot of fans would love
01:34to be in Liverpool's position. But for a club of Liverpool's stature, it wasn't good enough,
01:41that mid-90s period. Then early 2000s, there was a little bit of success in the Champions
01:48League but then again after that, it wasn't great. That's where Liverpool need to stay
01:53now and that's what Arnie Slott would be saying. He'd be saying, get us in the top
01:55four every year is a minimum.
01:58Obviously, making the return to the Champions League, it's not as simple as just going on
02:03and saying they can go all the way in that competition. What's a realistic aim for them
02:08in the Champions League? They obviously want to get through to those latter stages and
02:12certainly through their group.
02:14Can Liverpool find that balance of being able to play twice a week the top teams because
02:20even in the Europa League, they were able to rotate, make wholesale changes to the team.
02:25But I think if Liverpool get to the quarter-finals, they might be happy but it depends on who
02:32they draw as well and what happens, what game they're at home for, etc.
02:37Obviously, Liverpool have got a lot of history in the Champions League, superb under Jürgen
02:43Klopp in it. I think Arnie Slott's got a good reputation in Europe as well. He obviously
02:49got final to the Europa Conference League final during the Champions League last season.
02:54So he'll be chomping at the bit to have a go on those big European nights as well.
