13:14Annika Rice has been our guest all this week
13:16and I think some people were shocked, Annika, you know,
13:19when I think it was 1994,
13:21absolutely at the peak of your powers in television terms, really,
13:24that you decided pretty much to call it a day for a while
13:27and go off and do something else.
13:29I just never saw my children.
13:31It was breaking my heart and they were about sort of three and four
13:34so I just literally went in and said to the controller of BBC One,
13:37then, I'm just going to take a sabbatical.
13:39And I literally stopped for, you know,
13:41yeah, I just gave up that sort of Saturday night BBC One thing
13:44and went to art school and painted
13:47and I've sort of been doing that ever since.
13:49And I've had some hilarious adventures, really, with my painting.
13:52I was painting in Norfolk during the summer
13:54and I decided to go and paint on this lovely island
13:57and there's a ferry that takes you out there
13:59and then because of the problems with the tides
14:01it has to wait till the end of the day to take you back again.
14:04So I set off and set up my easel at this very, very quiet private bit
14:08which I thought only I knew about
14:10and I just set up my easel and was just looking at the view
14:13and then to my horror, a young amorous couple came
14:16and set up a rug about ten feet in front of me
14:19but they didn't see me there
14:21and because they were facing the sun which was, you know, ahead of me
14:24and I was paralysed because I'd left it too long to go,
14:29hello, so I'm literally there with a brush
14:31and all sorts of things take place
14:33and I'm sort of edging behind this bush
14:36thinking, well, I'll just keep quiet and they'll never know
14:38and I was literally like this because I just didn't want to see anything.
14:41And then the ferryman came to take us all back again
14:44and they packed up all their stuff
14:46but they'd have known I was watching if I'd followed them
14:49so I stayed on the island and missed the ferry
14:51and had to actually ring up a friend who'd come out in a speedboat
14:54to come and collect me later because I was so traumatised.
14:57So I spent the whole afternoon, I didn't paint one bit of colour on my canvas
15:01I was hiding behind a bramble bush.
15:05Anyway, but mostly, you know, the joy of taking your paints outside
15:09is just glorious, you know, a fabulous hobby to have.
