Sheffield Wednesday were beaten by RB Salzburg in Austria

00:00Joe Crown and Alex Miller here at the Red Bull Arena after a 4-0 win for the home side.
00:06Joe Crown, we can talk around the houses. Red Bull Salzburg are...
00:11Better?
00:12Yeah.
00:13They're operating on a different plane. I think, look, this is a side that got out,
00:17the Champions League group stages have won a raft of Austrian Bundesliga titles. Wednesday
00:23were trying new things today, or certainly the way that they were trying to play through the
00:27lines and, yeah, it's what we're told, isn't it?
00:30Yeah, I mean, like you say, the regulars in the Champions League, the Europa League,
00:34that is the level that they're operating at and
00:37Sheffield Wednesday just survived in the Championship last season and, you know,
00:40the first half, it was largely those players that just stayed up as well.
00:45They're just a better team and I think that these are the games.
00:48It was interesting speaking to Danny at St George's Park when we did,
00:52he spoke specifically about this game, about how he wanted,
00:56because of the way that both Salzburg play, with their high press, with their quick transitions,
01:02it would offer them a chance to try and figure out decisions under pressure and
01:06they certainly had to do that today because there was a lot of that high press.
01:09Yeah.
01:09And they're being very strict on the playing out the back, aren't they?
01:13Wednesday fans are going to see a lot of that this season.
01:15Yeah, I think so and you can see certain movements and patterns that they're trying to put together
01:21and it worked.
01:22You know, I think that first half, there was certainly a 10-15 minute period where
01:27they were getting through.
01:28They were also getting caught out.
01:29Yeah.
01:30This, you know, their manager Pep Linders was one of the designers of the Liverpool press
01:34that won them a Premier League and a Champions League and all the success that he had alongside
01:40Jurgen Klopp.
01:41It's a Red Bull thing.
01:43It's part of the machine.
01:44These players have been working on it.
01:49I would just say that's in it.
01:50Like, it's not just a Red Bull Salzburg thing.
01:52This is a Red Bull way and a lot of these guys have been doing it for a long time.
01:56Danny has been in at Wednesday for, you know, six months.
02:00Well, just over six months.
02:01Is it nine months now?
02:02Something like that.
02:03And it's still very much a work in progress.
02:05I think it's part of the learning process.
02:07I think it's why Danny won to these kinds of games.
02:09I think you learn more.
02:10Personally, I think you learn more about yourself as a team and what you're good at,
02:17what your limitations are.
02:18In a game like this, losing to an obvious Salzburg,
02:20then you do, you know, beat yourself.
02:22Yeah, exactly, exactly.
02:24We'd love to give you some reaction from the Wednesday camp.
02:28That was denied.
02:30Not sure why.
02:31It feels a long way to come for Danny Royal to not want to speak to the two of us and Rob.
02:38We've got media day with him on Monday and hopefully we'll sort of get some reaction
02:43to this game when perhaps he's feeling a little bit more chatty.
02:47But yeah, like Joe says, I think you can get an awful lot out of that.
02:51Obviously, the scoreline is what it was.
02:53Wednesday's best player on the day, I don't think there's any doubt whatsoever, was James Beadle.
02:57Yeah, that first half he was an answer.
02:58There was one save at the end of the first half,
03:00just actually his last act of the game, that was a genuinely world-class save.
03:05And, you know, I think if it wasn't for him,
03:07we could have been sort of talking five or six in that first half.
03:10That bodes really well because he's going to be a big player for Wednesday this season,
03:15not just in terms of his goalkeeping abilities,
03:17but his work on the ball and his work sort of in possession.
03:21So to see him play like that, having only recently come back, is very, very promising.
03:27There was little bits, wasn't there?
03:29You know, Jamal Lowe showed some nice little touches.
03:31Thought Sean Fissera, Jan Valeri, they came on the second half and did quite well.
03:38But I just don't think...
03:39We said it before, and I think it's important that we said it before,
03:42to say not get carried away, win or lose, it doesn't really matter.
03:46It really doesn't.
03:48It feels like we're just being really defensive and going,
03:51hey, yeah, but I mean, it really doesn't.
03:54I suppose if they'd run out for it, oh, goodness, we'd be getting awfully excited.
03:57Yeah.
03:58But, yeah, that certainly rings true.
04:00But, yeah, a couple of moments in the first half,
04:02I think there was a break for the Bale of Canamartu chance,
04:05where Barry Bannon sort of played it out of the box.
04:09Marvin Johnson broke the line with a little touch,
04:12I think it was off his hip actually, it was really well taken.
04:13And then a big old swazz diag into the path of Bale of Canamartu.
04:18And you can see the patterns, can't you?
04:19You can see the patterns they're trying to find.
04:23And obviously, this is not necessarily a full-strength team,
04:27because we don't know what they're going to line up,
04:28but there was no DeSean Bernard today.
04:32You would think that he's going to be a starting player for Wednesday.
04:35There's a lot to figure out in terms of where Wednesday are at.
04:38It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Werder Bremen now,
04:41because does it change completely?
04:44We saw a bit of that, I suppose, last season,
04:47the formation he went with today,
04:48with sort of 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot.
04:51It's going to be interesting now to see if that was a today thing,
04:54whether that is the same Werder Bremen,
04:56or if they try something else.
04:57I suppose a little bit of transfer news today,
04:59sort of, with the goalkeeper.
05:03A new face between the sticks,
05:04who wasn't actually on the team feet, was he?
05:06Yeah, it's worth saying that obviously Ben Hamer is injured.
05:10Piers Charles is away with Northern Ireland.
05:13George Shelby is here,
05:15who's a name that will be new to a lot.
05:18Ex-Nottingham Forest, isn't he, Joe?
05:19Yeah, he came through the ranks at Nottingham Forest, yeah.
05:22And made some good saves in that second half, I think.
05:24Obviously got caught on the ball, you know, playing out.
05:28I mean, twice in a minute,
05:29which looked a little bit hairy,
05:30but he did make some good saves.
05:32It was a bit of a step up from Dundalk too.
05:35Yeah, so it'll be interesting to see
05:38whether that's a transfer look at,
05:42whether it's just buying them some time,
05:44with Pierson and Ben not available.
05:47But we'll keep an eye on that.
05:50And of course, we'll ask Danny about it on Monday.
05:53I managed to grab a quick word
05:55with the Salzburg manager, Pep Linders,
05:58who was more than happy to speak to us,
06:00you know, ask him a couple of questions.
06:02So that'll be filling the newspapers
06:04for the next couple of days.
06:05So enjoy all that.
06:07But yeah, as ever, forthestar.co.uk,
06:10it's Alex and Joe out here in Austria.
