Voters in Los Angeles unsurprised by Biden withdrawal, mixed emotions about Harris
American voters in Los Angeles voiced their opinions on Sunday (July 21) about US president Joe Biden pulling out of the presidential race and who might be the Democratic nominee.
Biden, who at 81 is the oldest person ever to have occupied the Oval Office, said he will remain in his role as president until his term ends on Jan. 20, 2025, and will address the nation this week.
Biden announced he was stepping down by posting a letter on X. He also endorsed his vice-president Kamala Harris to run in his place.

00:00I think there was definitely an issue with how old he was.
00:29After the debate, it just seemed like that was going to be a possibility.
00:33I actually wasn't shocked. I thought it was coming.
00:36I just hope the Democratic Party has a plan.
00:41I think we should be having somebody younger run in the country.
00:44I'm appreciative for what he did as a president, showing up for the people.
00:51I think it was time for him to move on.
00:54It just seemed like it was going to happen.
00:57From all the things that have been happening the past week or two,
01:00from what everybody's been saying, all the donors,
01:03and the big people in Hollywood talking,
01:06even just word of mouth going to and fro,
01:10it seemed like it was inevitable that he was going to pull out.
01:14If he didn't pull out, then it would be a big mistake.
01:16I think he did it because he knows it's about that time.
01:19Maybe it's time to focus on his health and take care of him.
01:22Being a president requires a lot, and maybe he just knows it's time.
01:26I'm not very happy about it, but then again,
01:29neither one of them, to be honest, are any better than the other.
01:33I wish we had somebody that we really could vote for
01:36and really could be about the people.
01:38I was surprised, but I'm glad he did the right thing,
01:54because he has done a great job for the last four years,
01:58but we think a better representative would be better
02:02to have a better chance against Donald Trump.
02:06I'm not that shocked.
02:08With his dementia, I knew his Democrats were going to push him out,
02:12but I don't think Kamala has a chance to beat Trump.
02:20In a lot of ways, I think it's a good thing,
02:23because I don't think he's competent, and I think he's shown that.
02:28What I don't like about it is who's going to supersede him.
02:31Kamala Harris? Not a fan.
02:35I do think that there's bias out there. There's no doubt.
02:38There's racism. There's sexism.
02:40But right now, we did it before with Barack Obama.
02:43No one thought that someone with his name and a black man
02:46could get elected president, and look what he did.
02:48And we're at a place in our country where people want something new and fresh.
02:51They want someone who can do the job.
02:54Kamala's both tough, but also she is a woman,
02:57and she's been out there on abortion rights,
03:00making sure that we can keep our rights as women
03:03and be able to make choices with our own body.
03:06And I think that there's so many young people
03:09that are totally great with having a woman president.
03:13I think she reminds me of an auntie at the cookout or something.
03:17I don't know. She's a very likable person, it seems like.
03:21She does have a questionable time as an attorney,
03:27putting people in jail for smoking marijuana and stuff like that.
03:30So it'll definitely be something that I'm going to think about moving forward.
03:34I'd vote for Kamala.
03:36I mean, I really would like to see what she's been doing behind the scenes,
03:40but I would vote for her. I mean, she seems like she's for the people.
03:43I don't like where she stands, where she comes from.
03:46A couple things she says is okay,
03:49but I think it's more to appease the crowd than anything.
04:01I was saying that they would probably put Gavin in the race, Gavin Newsom.
04:06I'm surprised that they're not going to put someone brand new, fresh,
04:11with no tainted record or no, I guess, opinion from the people in the race.
04:18But it's either going to be Kamala or Gavin. That's what I think.
04:22Of course I would consider Gavin.
04:25It's either going to be Kamala or Gavin. That's what I think.
04:28Of course I would consider other candidates,
04:31but I think she is probably going to be the one.
04:34I'm super excited. I've loved her since her time in California.
04:39I think she can do it. I think she'll be a great president.
04:43I would consider other candidates. I don't know that there are any.
04:48My father, who's a Republican, texted me about an hour ago and said,
04:53what about a Hillary Clinton and Harris ticket?
04:58I said, I'd do that. I would vote for that, sure.
05:02But Joe Biden has raised a ton of money.
05:05And if he chooses Kamala, and if he chooses to give his fundraising money to Kamala,
05:11then anyone else is going to be miles and miles behind in the fundraising effort.
05:16And we all know that, unfortunately, money is important in these races.
05:21And I bet you that we're going to see today
05:24that there's going to be a flood of donations for Kamala for president.
