00:00:00A very good evening and welcome along to Allianz Stadion, we're in the Austrian capital of
00:00:08Vienna this evening for Milan's first pre-season friendly of the new campaign.
00:00:14Rapid Vienna are the opponents, 125 is a number which brings together both of these clubs,
00:00:22both founded in 1899.
00:00:24They have therefore celebrated their 125th birthdays this season and as such have decided
00:00:31to meet one another in a friendly.
00:00:34First look then at Paolo Fonseca's Rossoneri, the first of a series of summer friendlies
00:00:40for Davide Calabria et al.
00:00:54Home colours de rigueur this evening, Rapid in their iconic green and white and we're
00:01:00expecting them to line up in that shape there, 4-2-3-1, similar formation to the one that
00:01:07Milan will be operating in, it could easily morph into a 4-5-1, we expect it to do just
00:01:13that when they're out of possession.
00:01:19Not too many senior players on the pitch this evening for Milan but Davide Calabria is certainly
00:01:24one of them, he's skipper's this side as the club captain.
00:01:30When all eyes are drawn to the man wearing number 30, 17-year-old Mattia Liberale is
00:01:34included, he'll play as a number 10 just off lone striker Lorenzo Colombo, an opportunity
00:01:41for Filippo Terraciano and Yassine Adli now wearing 94, having swapped it for 7 since
00:01:46the arrival of Alvaro Morata.
00:01:53Wonderful choreography there at Allianz Stadion, Milan runners-up in Serie A last season, up
00:02:01against the team that finished fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga and Rapid also were
00:02:06runners-up in their domestic cup, indeed their new campaign in the Austrian Cup begins very
00:02:13shortly as soon as the end of the month, just eight days away, a week tomorrow.
00:02:24Here he is, Mattia Liberale, an opportunity to impress, the tender age of just 17.
00:02:52We just waiting for the all-clear, which he's now got and we're up and running here
00:02:57in Vienna.
00:03:00First look at the new-look Milan, Rosso Meri now under Paolo Fonsec, it's his first game
00:03:06in charge, it's not a competitive match but already an opportunity to see how much of
00:03:12his footballing philosophy the players have been able to take on board since he's been
00:03:19We have already heard from him when he addressed the media alongside Zlatan Brehbovic, a press
00:03:27conference which was held at Casa Milan as opposed to Milanello and lest we forget, Milan
00:03:32have already played a friendly between the end of last season and the start of the upcoming
00:03:37campaign as Sportiello looks long, easy gather in the end for Hedl, thumbs up nonetheless
00:03:45from Shaka Traore, Milan were in action on the other side of the world in Western Australia,
00:03:51Perth, that 5-2 defeat to Roma on the final day of May, that was Daniele Bonera taking
00:03:56charge of that one, he's now head coach of Milan Futuro, the under-23 side, Ciuquese
00:04:03driving into the box, he wanted an early penalty but Patrick Kosielnicki, referee immediately
00:04:12waved away the appeals of the Nigerian, certainly warrants a second look at that because Ciuquese
00:04:22was doing what he does best, driving at opponents and almost prompted an early foul and a very
00:04:29swift penalty for Milan, Rapides will be a bit further ahead in terms of their fitness
00:04:39levels because their campaign is on the horizon, it actually starts with European endeavours
00:04:47because they finished fourth domestically last season, Rapides will take on Visva Krakow,
00:04:51the Polish side, five days from now, qualifying round two in the Europa League for the second
00:04:59leg of that game here on the 1st of August, there's Paolo Fonseca, the new Milan head
00:05:05coach, who has several difficult assignments on the horizon in terms of pre-season, three
00:05:13glamorous friendlies upcoming on US soil, Manchester City next Sunday, that's it, Yankee
00:05:22Stadium, we get a look at Robert Klaus as well, a German in charge of Rapides, who are
00:05:30on the attack now, trying to hurt Milan here, that was an important touch from Malik Chao
00:05:37and then demands the ball back, instead it's Pobege, Terraciano made to hurry, no foul
00:05:44on him either, nicely done by Gjergic, referee reluctant to blow in the early stages, this
00:06:00time Terraciano does take a tumble, and we do hear a blast of the whistle, and with 77
00:06:10is Bendegucpolis, one of the new signings for Rapides, Hungary international recruited
00:06:18on a free from Wolves, Milan have brought in a couple of new faces themselves, Alex
00:06:25Jimenez, who we saw last season briefly in the first team, particularly when Rossoneri
00:06:34first team was shorthanded, missing the likes of Theo Nandes, who's still away on his holidays
00:06:38incidentally having gone deep at Euro 2024, France defeated by Spain who went on to win
00:06:58the competition, and Alvaro Morata will be joining as well, having been recruited from
00:07:06Atletico Madrid, that's why this man on the ball Yassine Adli is no longer wearing 70,
00:07:10now wears 94, it's the postcode of his home town in France, Vitry-sur-Seine, Gabbia, good
00:07:31turnout here given it is Saturday in late July, there are plenty of competing activities
00:07:38in the summer months, plenty have come here to cast their eyes over Milan, I'm sure there's
00:07:45plenty of local interests as well from the Viennese, Calabria, Chiquese,
00:08:15there's a player down off the ball there, it was Auer who was forced back inside by
00:08:22Chiquese, now the referee does stop play, it's Grgic who's gone down, and that's why,
00:08:37just tangling with Liberale, who despite being still a teenager, more than happy to put himself
00:08:42out, Matteo Liberale second only to Francesco Camarda really in terms of hype, both players
00:08:52were part of the Italy under 17 side that became European champions at the back end
00:08:57of last season, Camarda now with the U19s, Liberale playing first team football here
00:09:04under Paolo Fonseca who immediately wants to have a look at this exciting young talent,
00:09:09if you're good enough, you're old enough, seems to be the message from the Portuguese
00:09:15tactician, wearing sixes Royale, this is Svetkovic under pressure, nearly turned into trouble
00:09:29there with Lorenzo Colombo hounding him, interesting to see whether Colombo stays with Milan this
00:09:36season or whether he's destined for another loan after spells with Lecce and Monza, here
00:09:41come Rapid, there's a man free in the middle and a cut back, sees them strike the post,
00:09:49big opportunity there not taken mercifully for Milan, it was Seidel who struck the foot
00:09:55of the post, that's a relief for Marcos Portiello and Milan there, could have easily trailed
00:10:07it's far too easy, ball down the side, cut back into a pocket of space and no one had
00:10:11picked up Seidel, the skipper, Jansen's ball, good awareness, it's Portiello beaten but
00:10:22Seidel just struck the foot of the post, Calabria beaten as well, it didn't break the way of
00:10:30his teammates, Belio was in there as well, the Croatian, Calabria has to stretch, Gurgic
00:10:37gets there first, here come the home side once again, Belio, Seidel with the trickery
00:10:47and this time it's just the other side of the post, well he struck the upright and here
00:10:53it's him to shave the same post, looking very sharp indeed here, Seidel, Calabria had
00:11:01no answer for him, Portiello might argue he had this one covered but Palma Fonseca clearly,
00:11:08it's only at the start of his mission here, Matias Seidel, not once but twice, almost
00:11:17giving Rapide a lead inside the first 10 minutes, Mila will try and build out from
00:11:28the back, then again that was true under Stefano Pioli, one thing they won't be doing, Palma
00:11:34Fonseca was quick to point out when he met the media for the first time, officially as
00:11:39Rossoneri head coach, he won't be playing man against man all over the park, Liberale
00:11:44nicely done into Ciuquesi, Ciuquesi now onto his stronger side, still Ciuquesi, a couple
00:11:51of players slam the door shut, Pobega in support, instead it's Calabria, Liberale's first time
00:11:58ball this time over hit and it was he initially who had released Samuel Ciuquesi, Pobega's
00:12:06won it back, the whistle's gone, in fact, a decision given the way of Mila and Robert
00:12:15Klaus wondering what the infringement was there, not the only one to be honest, Rapide
00:12:28Vienna's opening league match will be very taxing, they entertain Sturm Graz here, Sturm
00:12:34Graz who won the domestic double last season, league and cup, beating Rapide in the Austrian
00:12:40cup final, sadly with the ball in, put behind, first corner of this evening goes the way
00:12:57of Milan, Chao will be a threat, Colombo no slouch in the air either, Gabbia we saw
00:13:12pitching with some goals last season as well towards the back end of the campaign, Hadley's
00:13:22corner is over hit and that's rather wasteful, slight grimace there, understandably so,
00:13:39that's better from Calabria but then he's given it away and here comes Jansen, aware
00:13:45of what was around him on the far side but it's over hit there for Boller, Milan got
00:13:48away with that there, understandably some of the Rossoneri players are looking a little
00:13:54rusty, doesn't matter whether you go away and play for your country at an international
00:13:59tournament as many have done at Euro 2024, whether you've had some time off, pre-season
00:14:05can be very taxing physically, double sessions on the training ground, even more so when
00:14:10you're trying to get to grips with new tactical demands as these players are, Palma Fonseca
00:14:16having replaced Stefano Pioli, so it will take time, important thing is that Milan look
00:14:23right come their first competitive match of the season, that will come against Torino
00:14:28the third week of August.
00:14:35Next up is Manchester City, it's a Yankee stadium then after that a couple more glamour
00:14:42friendlies against two Spanish giants, Real Madrid at Soldier Field in Chicago, Barcelona
00:14:48at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland and finally what will be again an emotional
00:14:58occasion the game against Monza, the Silvio Berlusconi trophy, but the Rossoneri beginning
00:15:08to settle now, having had that early scare, when Seidl hit the post, Gabbia, Chukweze,
00:15:25Pogba might have been able to go forward there instead he reverts back to Calabria, Gabbia
00:15:30now Chao, Adli with the big switch, asking a little too much of Chukweze, not because
00:15:44of the pace and direction on the pass but more because of the bounce, this is the closest
00:15:50we've come to a goal, Matias Seidl stroking it, the other side of Calabria almost into
00:15:57the corner, Sportiello was unsighted and wrong-footed and has the frame of the goal
00:16:01to thank, this one he might have got closer to it, we'll never know whether he would have
00:16:05kept it out because the ball flashed just wide but Seidl the danger man and almost the
00:16:10difference maker, that's why he wears the captain's armband, they are down on goals

00:16:26Vedder Bremen, here's Liberale, what a low percentage ball that outside of the boot,
00:16:36up the pitch towards Colombo, the difficulty here is as a 17-year-old you get a chance
00:16:43with the first team, the best thing you can do in many ways is just keep it simple but
00:16:48there is that tendency to try and play the Hollywood passes to try and show a bit of
00:16:52flair but if he has been included it's because Paolo Fonseca knows what he's capable of,
00:16:59doesn't necessarily need to showcase all of that tonight, Rapide building out well from
00:17:05the back here, they're looking sharp and they're in behind again here they can square it for
00:17:10the opening goal it just needed a better ball and Belial would have had a tap in and don't
00:17:15they know it too, again Milan caught out with that high line, Sportiello would have
00:17:26been struggling had that been into the path of Belial instead, all across the face was
00:18:04was a tricky one to gauge when it comes to pre-season, how much do you focus on results,
00:18:13how much do you just want to get minutes under your belt, Seidel has it again for Rapide
00:18:17here, Milan taking some chances building out from the back and not quite getting it right
00:18:22but here's Csukwese, well closed down, Grgic, Auer, Royale for Svetkovic, Boller
00:18:42lifted forward hopefully there by Seidel without really seeing who is ahead of the ball, who had
00:18:50made the run, no one has it proved
00:19:00Adly, Csukwese has pace, he's got there but he went a little early
00:19:05quite refreshing in some ways just to see assistants raising the flag immediately
00:19:13nice when there's no VAR, just a bit of a throwback, if you're offside you're offside
00:19:19the flag appears, the referee blows and that's the end of the matter
00:19:27comes here with a lot of pedigree, Paulo Fonseca his work in the past with
00:19:32likes of Porto and Braga and Roma, Shakhtar most recently
00:19:41and French football

00:20:09not seen too much play down the far side at all, most of Milan's efforts have been concentrated
00:20:14on this right hand side, Csukwese has been their most dangerous player, lest we forget Milan
00:20:21a bit farewell to a couple of senior players in the summer, likes of

00:22:42make the difference, English pair of Tomori and Loftus-Cheek

00:24:44Milan finished as runners-up in Serie A so top two domestically plus the two cup finalists so
00:24:53Juventus and Atalanta it means that we'll have a northern quartet
00:24:57Inter as champions, Milan as runners-up, Juventus as Coppa Italia winners and Atalanta as

00:25:10means that Milan will play Juventus the semi-finals of
00:25:17the Italian Super Cup, Inter will come up against Atalanta, Ciuquese

00:27:18pitch in the knowledge that sooner or later if you are flagging give the referee a signal

00:27:33I'm not sure whether Milan are struggling with the heat or just struggling to get to grips with
00:27:38the demands of this game it's second best so far

00:31:49again Milan in just too much of a hurry to get the ball forward again need to
00:31:57issue that disclaimer this is only pre-season is above all it's the first half of Milan's first
00:32:05preparation game essentially there'll be five of them all told
00:32:10so that Rossoneri will get better both in terms of energy and
00:32:19technically too as the rust starts to be chipped away
00:32:24but above all in terms of understanding of the footballing principles that the
00:32:28new head coach wants to impart it's pre-season for all of us
00:32:38even those of us covering the team trying to build up to full fitness and
00:32:45peak of our powers don't want to peak too early
00:32:49no point winning five pre-season friendlies only to lose your first competitive match and
00:32:54players will be conscious of that as well but it is a chance especially for the forward players
00:32:59to get some goals under their belt
00:33:04half an hour's now elapsed
00:33:07and we haven't had a goal close as we've come that effort from Matthias Seidel
00:33:12from Matthias Seidel off the foot of the post
00:33:17Milan had an early shout for a penalty when Chukwese went down but they haven't drawn a
00:33:20save out of Niklas Haedel which is a bit of an indictment on the Rossoneri
00:33:28we hope the best is yet to come

00:36:29who had an important role under Pioli I'm sure he'll have an equally significant
00:36:34role under Fonseca here come Rapide again finding it very easy to penetrate down the far side

00:36:54it was going to be difficult for Lorenzo Colombo to chase down those
00:36:58lost causes Svekovic did enough there did all he needed to really

00:37:41called intelligent defending not everyone can be placed can be blessed rather with every single
00:37:48attribute required so if you do know that you're not the quickest centre-back
00:37:52you can compensate for that with positioning give yourself a yard or two's head start that's
00:37:57what Gabbia did there forced the striker to take the long route round as well having to bend his
00:38:01run and that allowed Gabbia to get to the loose ball first very intelligent defender that's why
00:38:07said earlier this summer that whilst Milan didn't have any players in the Italy squad then again
00:38:14in some ways that's a badge of honour not to be associated with a very underwhelming Italy
00:38:19display era 2024 but whilst the Rossoneri weren't represented
00:38:23in the Ciano Spalletti squad Ibra felt that Gabbia should have had a place on the plane
