00:00Well in season 98 there's been a massive increase in the number of privateers and each and every
00:05team operate on a different basis.
00:07Here we're taking a look at Mal Rose and Mal works on the philosophy of pumping every bit
00:12of cash he's got into the car and he focuses on the car and therefore doesn't spend a great
00:16deal of money on obviously a transporter or things like that.
00:18In fact he runs his operation out of the back of his own panel van and has a trailer attached.
00:23Whereas the likes of Ryan McLeod, the Cadillac Productions Oance team, they have the big
00:28transporter.
00:28They're sponsored by Oance Insurance and the team did a terrific job to get this car back
00:33in shape from Sandown last weekend along with some help from Glen Seaton Racing and also
00:37Dick Johnson Racing because they were down a little bit on spares so it's good to see
00:41them here.
00:45We're getting set for a blast off in the Privateers Cup at Simmons Plains Raceway.
00:50Let's check out their line-up.
00:51Peter Doolman and Steve Reed it is off the front row.
00:53Ray Hislop the local and Greg Crick two Tasmanians off the second row.
00:57Keep in mind they draw for these positions.
00:59Keren Brewer and Ryan McLeod back in seven and eight.
01:01It's Darcy Russell and the youngster four wheel.
01:04And Mal Rose after a few problems in qualifying he starts off the back of the grid.
01:08This one should be a ripper.
01:09It's fantastic to see so many Privateers here.
01:12We didn't have a Privateers Cup here last year so that shows you how many more cars
01:17we have at this round here at Simmons Plains.
01:19It's surely only seconds away.
01:21There's a good low shot.
01:22Reed starting to creep more and away we go.
01:24He's got a blaster.
01:25He's got a blinder of a start as Steve Reed.
01:27Doolman blew it but it's a Lansvale car that will bring them into the first turn.
01:32Yeah plenty of smoke there.
01:33He's trying to get the power down coming off that very short start straight as they
01:37shuffle into turn one.
01:38Thundering under our camera down the back straight we go for the first time.
01:41Big pack of Privateer cars with Steve Reed in command.
01:44Trevor Ashby his business partner and old friend.
01:47He took the first round at Sandown.
01:49Here comes the local star Greg Crick around the outside of Peter Doolman.
01:52Didn't quite work that time round.
01:55Steve Reed taking over the wheel for this round and he leads them down the back straight
01:59for the first time.
02:00So Doolman it is coming under attack from Greg Crick the local as they head up through
02:04the sweeper.
02:05Brake hard for Pepsi Corner.
02:07Very demanding part of the racetrack there.
02:08Very hard on brakes.
02:09Look at the more fire wind down toward that corner.
02:12Standing the cars right on their nose.
02:14There's a big challenge around the outside by Crick.
02:16They'll go side by side.
02:17Doolman and Crick.
02:18Bit of a locked brake from his slot there as he tries to get on the action and Crick's
02:20got him.
02:21This is a big moment for the local drivers.
02:24In fact there's two local drivers in this race.
02:26Ray Hislop is there.
02:27He is there.
02:27The excellent seat in Falcon.
02:29But Greg Crick a big weekend for him.
02:31He was just awarded in Melbourne Holden Dealer of the Year.
02:35And so it's been a fantastic weekend for him if he can continue on.
02:41Rather Honda Dealer of the Year.
02:42I apologize we get carried away for Holden's here.
02:44Big attack from Hislop on the outside.
02:46He's going to round up Doolman too.
02:47Goes very, very deep under brakes into the hairpin turn.
02:50Doolman will now come back on the attack on the inside.
02:53They'll go side by side.
02:54Up the back straight once again.
02:55Oh you can see.
02:56Yeah the Castro Cougars Commodore getting right out of shape.
03:00But Hislop now who's got a bit of a lead on Doolman as they come through the straight
03:03up 240 kilometers an hour as they brake hard down to about 90k with this very demanding
03:09Pepsi turn.
03:09Well isn't it nice to see the two Tasmanian drivers up there in the top three.
03:13Greg Crick chasing hard after our race leader Steve Reid.
03:16There's the second of the Tasmanian drivers.
03:19Hislop has been working very hard over the last 12 months to do as many of the Shell
03:23Australia touring car rounds that he has.
03:25And it's great to see him doing well here on his home track.
03:27We've got two laps left to run.
03:30So the order now.
03:31Reid, Crick, Hislop, Doolman, McLeod in the OAM spout.
03:34That's a great rebuild after the Sandown disaster.
03:36Paul Wheel, Karen Brewer, Mal Rose and Darcy Russell.
03:39Here comes Greg Crick and the trust back Ericsson Commodore.
03:43Really hassling Steve Reid.
03:45It's going to be an interesting next lap and a half.
03:48My money's on Crick.
03:49No disrespect to Steve, but Crick is just going really hard.
03:52He was the quickest on the track last lap around by over a second.
03:56Here he comes now, the Tasmanian.
03:58Oh, there's contact there on the back straight through the sweeper.
04:01These guys are hard at it.
04:03Getting pretty fair dinkum there.
04:04Greg Crick, a very aggressive driver.
04:06I think he's one of the most underrated drivers in the country.
04:10And he's really having a go at the back of the Landsvale Comet here.
04:12Steve Reid doing a great job holding him out.
04:14But he's got one more lap to do it.
04:15He's going to be under real pressure.
04:16Look at this, a big attack.
04:18And the Ericsson Commodore.
04:19He's trying every move he can.
04:20Left, right, left, right.
04:21Filling up the mirrors of the Landsvale car.
04:23Keep your eyes on second and third because that gap is closing as well.
04:26Ray Hislop in the Falcon is coming up on his Tasmanian friend in Greg Crick.
04:31He pulls out of the slipstream.
04:32Here we go.
04:33It's going to be a breaking duel up into the hairpin.
04:35Reid's got the more preferred line here.
04:37Let's see what Crick has got.
04:39Steve Reid's got a good line into the hairpin.
04:42He's going to try and hold him out.
04:43Crick just had to get on the brakes.
04:44Now he comes up the inside.
04:45It's going to be a drag race.
04:47And you can see Crick, tremendous traction coming out of the hairpin.
04:50But now Reid's coming back on the attack.
04:52He tucks up behind the back of the Ericsson Commodore.
04:54And Hislop wants a slice of the action too.
04:56Beautiful over and up the move there by Greg Crick.
04:59He shouldn't be able to hang onto it here.
05:00He's got to defend that inside line.
05:02Steve Reid around the outside, hard on the brakes.
05:05He won't be able to make the move there on Greg Crick.
05:07So the local driver and Hislop.
05:09Ray Hislop's trying to get up into the action as well.
05:12They're bringing it to the chequered flag.
05:13And what a drive for the local lad.
05:15Greg Crick, well done.
05:17In the trust bag, Ericsson Commodore.
05:19A fantastic effort coming from back in fourth off the line.
05:23What a race.
05:24And didn't the locals love that?
05:25They're giving a big round of applause and say they should.
05:27Tasmanians in the first three positions.
05:30First and third with Steve Reid from Sydney filling out second place.
05:33What a great drive.
05:34Steve Reid just pulling up alongside Greg.
05:36I guess he'll be giving him the thumbs up.
05:38Good race, mate.
05:39Although they did make a bit of contact down through the sweeper.
05:41So, uh...
05:42You reckon that was the thumb?
05:44Maybe.
05:46Let's check the final placings of that fantastic Privateers Cup race on your Shell Helix Race.
05:51For, of course, Greg Crick in for the win from Steve Reid.
05:54Ray Hislop was probably the best driver I've seen him put in ahead of Peter Dorman and Ryan McLeod.
05:59Back in sixth position was the youngster, the 18-year-old Paul Wheel,
06:02ahead of Mel Rose, Kieran Brewer and Darcy Russell in ninth.
06:07Well, the increase in cars in the Privateers Cup this year has been matched by the increase in action.
06:11Greg Crick, that was a fantastic drive.
06:12You had a real carve-up with Steve there.
06:14Terrific stuff.
06:15That was a great race and that's what you always look forward to,
06:18having a race like that where it provides the spectators with plenty of action
06:21and gives the drivers some excitement as well.
06:24And you really got in a carve-up there.
06:25I think you actually made contact through the sweeper there at 240k.
06:28That must have taken your breath away.
06:29Well, I was on the outside and Steve was drifting out.
06:32But, you know, I was ready to pull out of it because if I'd have bumped him hard there,
06:35it would have turned him straight left off the track.
06:37It's the fastest corner in Australia, so I wouldn't want to do that there.
06:41And it must be a great feeling doing this in front of the home crowd.
06:43Yeah, it's good.
06:44I haven't had much luck here.
06:45So I'm hoping the day continues.
06:47Fantastic, Crick.
06:47Crick, best of luck.
06:48Thank you very much.
