00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're looking at the most notorious, heartbreaking and tragic
00:10demises of Pokémon depicted in the various anime series and films.
00:22Number 10 – Jan's Talonflame Learning about the canon history of Pokémon
00:28is fun, however, it can apparently be traumatic as well. In the episode,
00:33The Legend of X, Y and Z, Professor Sycamore and Alexa explore some ruins and go into the
00:40legend of the statue, Isla. In the past, Jan rides off to find Evil Tull, much to Isla's concern.
00:52However, the legendary Pokémon suddenly appears, causing Jan to attack by sending out his
00:58Talonflame. Before the Firebird can even land a hit, Evil Tull uses Oblivion Wing,
01:05turning Talonflame into stone and disappearing into the forest below.
01:13Before Jan can even grieve the loss, Isla jumps in the way of another Evil Tull attack,
01:19becoming a statue. He spent years finding Xerneas to restore Isla, only to no success.
01:33Number 9 – Elder the Trevenant Because Celebi exists, this gives the anime a
01:38chance to take part in time travel shenanigans. In the episode, A Timeless Encounter, the mythical
01:45Pokémon sent Ash and Torracat into the past, meeting a child Professor Kukui. The future
01:52Masked Royal introduces the duo to the area's totem Pokémon, a massive Trevenant called Elder.
02:04Thanks to Ash's help in getting rid of a Cutiefly infestation,
02:08Elder grants the ageless future champion a Firium Z. Celebi, realising its error,
02:18sends Ash and Torracat back to their timeline without warning. In the present day, when they
02:24look up, they see Elder, who has since passed away and become a foreboding tree in the forest.
02:31Number 8 – Harriet Snubbull When we're introduced to Harriet in 2018's
02:42Pokémon the Movie, The Power of Oz, she seems to have fallen into the wrong universe,
02:48with her passionate dislike of all Pokémon. However, as we discover later, when Harriet
02:54attempts to restart the power plant, only to be stopped by fire, there's a good reason for her
03:00behaviour. When Harriet was a child, she had a Snubbull when flames erupted at the facility.
03:11She begged her partner Pokémon to come back, but it went for the plant's key. As Snubbull
03:16returned to Harriet, the flames engulfed the Pokémon, badly injuring the human's hand as well.
03:23She blamed herself for the tragedy all these years. By the end, Harriet forgives herself
03:32and begins to love Pokémon again. Number 7 – Latios
03:42Not only did 2002's Pokémon Heroes film confuse fans with Ash and his Latias girlfriend,
03:49it also left the audience with trauma. In the past, Latios and Latias' father
03:55sacrificed himself to save the people of Alto Mare, turning into a soul dew to power the city's
04:02defence mechanism. In the present, after the gem was broken and a tidal wave was set to
04:13obliterate the town, Latias and an injured Latios dash in to stop it. However, while they saved
04:21everyone, the power exerted by Latios caused him to perish. As the humans find Latias, Latios uses
04:29his sight-sharing ability to show them what he can see at the end, before turning into a soul dew
04:36to keep Alto Mare safe. Number 6 – The Three Unnamed Pokémon
04:48In 2016, Pokémon Generations was released, which gave fans short animated videos on key moments
04:56in the game franchise. The reawakening episode focused on a moment that first left its mark
05:02in the Pokémon Gold and Silver games. We saw how the legendary beasts of Suicune, Entei and Raikou
05:13came to be. In the past, Ecruteak City's Brass Tower was struck by lightning, setting it ablaze.
05:21Sadly, three unnamed Pokémon didn't make it out in time. After the fire was extinguished
05:32and the broken citizens grieved, Ho-Oh arrived. The legendary Pokémon used its power to remake
05:39the lost hounds into the legendary beasts. Rather than celebrate, the scarred citizens attacked,
05:46causing the resurrected Pokémon to depart. Number 5 – Luxray
05:582017's Pokémon the Movie I Choose You reimagined Ash's start into becoming a Pokémon Master.
06:05During this trip to find Ho-Oh, he meets Sorrel, who wants to be a Pokémon professor. With a
06:11powerful Lucario as his partner, he seemed to have it all together. But during a heartfelt moment,
06:17Sorrel tells of his tragedy. When he was a child, he grew up with the family Luxray.
06:28One day, Sorrel was lost outside during a blizzard. Luxray found the youngster in the snow
06:34and lay on him to keep him warm. When the rescue party found them the next morning,
06:44while Sorrel was okay, Luxray had frozen. This moment understandably haunted Sorrel
06:51as he distanced himself from Pokémon. Then, he met Lucario, changing his life.
06:58Number 4 – Lucario
07:06The mid-2000s Pokémon films loved dishing out audience agony regularly. This time,
07:12it's 2005's Pokémon Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. No one would be happy about being locked up
07:20and seemingly betrayed by their closest ally for centuries. But eventually, Lucario begins to trust
07:30again. With the tree of beginning in jeopardy, the humans are swallowed up by its antibodies
07:36before Mew saves them. However, with the tree dying, Ash and Lucario combine their aura to
07:43restore it. Yet, the Pokémon knocks Ketchum away. While Lucario saves the day, the strain is too
07:57much and he begins to fade away. Before he does, he witnesses Aaron's final message explaining his
08:04actions, causing him and the audience to sob.
08:14Number 3 – The Kanto Starter Clones
08:17If you ever watched 1999's Pokémon, the first movie, and wondered what caused Mewtwo to lash
08:23out beyond his creation and abuse, then this will explain it. The uncut story of Mewtwo's origin,
08:30which was on the international DVD release for 2000's Pokémon Mewtwo Returns,
08:36was a prologue to Mewtwo's tale in the 1998 movie. We see the legendary Pokémon as a child,
08:54having telepathic conversations with Amber 2, the clone of Dr. Fushi's deceased daughter,
09:00and the Kanto Starter Clones of Squirtle 2, Charmander 2, and Bulbasaur 2. As the group
09:08explores Amber's hometown, the clones begin vanishing as they perish in the real world.
09:13Eventually, only Mewtwo and Amber 2 are left. Sadly, she too disappears,
09:24as a devastated Mewtwo watches on.
09:36Number 2 – Marowak of Lavender Town
09:39From the franchise's video game debut, the tale of what happened to Marowak in Lavender Town
09:45has saddened fans. Yet, the 2013 series, Pokémon Origins, which showcased the journey of Red and
09:53Blue, made it even worse. In the episode, File 2 – Cubone, we see Marowak save her child Cubone
10:01from Team Rocket. However, she's attacked with electrified batons, ending her life.
10:20When Red enters the Pokémon Tower to get rid of the villainous team,
10:24we see the heartbreaking reunion between Cubone and the spirit of Marowak.
10:29Now content with seeing her child one final time, Marowak goes off into the afterlife.

10:57Number 1 – Stoutland
10:59No episode in the series has covered Pokémon passing on as impactful as this one. After
11:06being introduced several episodes before by One Journey Ends, Another Begins,
11:11Stoutland's time was running out as its health deteriorated.
11:21We witnessed the impact of the tragedy on Litten, who sees the Pokémon as a mentor
11:28slash parent. After leaving the Pokémon Centre, Stoutland and Litten fall asleep on their couch.
11:34However, after an uncomfortable dream, when Litten awakes, Stoutland is gone.
11:46The use of the tree leaves and the rain falling, Meowth watching sadly, Professor Kukui's reaction,
11:53and the cloud of the faithful hound make this bitterly incredible.
