00:00So, after a subway series, this season goes all to the Mets.
00:07We have a reaction here on this Thursday morning on the Early Line on Sports Grid.
00:13From one of the best to do it in the Big Apple, that's John Yastrzemski, the host of New York,
00:18New York on The Ringer and Spotify, covering baseball in the greater New York City area
00:24for SNY as well.
00:26JJ, we appreciate the time.
00:28Thank you for being with us here live on this Thursday on the Early Line.
00:31Guys, my pleasure.
00:33As one-sided as it gets with the subway series, full-fledged butt-whooping by the New York
00:38Mets.
00:39No question about it.
00:41Four games between the Yanks and the Mets this year.
00:45Four victories for the Amazons.
00:47Two first up at the end of June at Citi Field and then, of course, these past two evenings
00:53in the Bronx inside Yankee Stadium, including JJ, yesterday in the fourth and final game
00:58this season between these two Big Apple foes.
01:01Twelve to three, the victory for the Mets against Garrett Cole and the Yanks.
01:07Five home runs launched by the Amazons yesterday.
01:09Two off the bat of Francisco Lindor.
01:13What worked so well for the Mets last night, and I guess you could say all season long,
01:17against the Pinstripes?
01:18Listen, their lineup, it's deep, top to bottom.
01:21And I think we've seen that kind of transformation within the Mets.
01:25The minute they put Francisco Lindor in the leadoff spot, they put Brandon Nimmo in the
01:29two spot, they found some answers at the bottom of the order.
01:33You just compare and contrast what the Mets are able to do from an offensive standpoint
01:39up and down their lineup and look at the Yankee lineup where Luis Severino is looking like
01:46Nostradamus basically proclaiming, all you got is two guys in the lineup.
01:50I don't know who's going to argue and who's going to fight with Luis Severino on that
01:54take because that's exactly what the Yankees do have.
01:56It's two guys in the lineup and everybody else flat out stinks.
02:00So I think in these four games, and you saw the way the Mets pounded Garrett Cole, really
02:06disappointed in Cole last night.
02:07I thought he'd give you a big effort.
02:09I thought he'd avenge that last terrible start he had against the Mets.
02:13You could argue he's even worse in this game that he pitched Wednesday night at Yankee
02:17Stadium, but just the overall top to bottom lineup depth that you see from the Mets, it's
02:24there and it's clearly not with the Yankees.
02:28John, if we look from a Yankees perspective, you tweeted out last night, 11 and 23 since
02:33Father's Day weekend, unwatchable, pathetic baseball in the Bronx.
02:37How did we get to this point?
02:38Everything was looking so good for so long.
02:41That's a great point.
02:42And I think it's a variety of different things.
02:44You look at their lineup, guys who were producing earlier in the year, stopped producing.
02:48Anthony Volpe.
02:49Now he's been better since the all-star break, but his numbers went in the tank.
02:53Alex Verdugo.
02:54Remember, Alex Verdugo hit that big home run in Boston.
02:57He's flexing around the bases.
02:59I think maybe he has five hits since that particular point in time.
03:03Gleyber Torres, who you see right there, really hasn't gotten going all year.
03:07And the Yankees are missing Stanton.
03:09So I think all of those elements are in play within their lineup.
03:12Their bullpen is not particularly deep.
03:15It doesn't have guys that get and produce swing and miss stuff.
03:19But the rotation, the rotation the first two months of the year when the Yankees were firing
03:24on all cylinders was phenomenal.
03:28Every guy was pitching great.
03:30There was inevitable regression.
03:32And I think the thought was going to be, hey, some of these other guys are going to regress
03:37a little bit, but you're going to get Gary Cole back.
03:39And all of a sudden, Gary Cole is going to counter that.
03:42So lineup not producing, bullpen not having swing and miss, and a rotation that has just
03:48gone completely in the tank, that's how you have a record that's resembling the likes
03:54of the Anaheim Angels and the Chicago White Sox over the last 45 games.
03:58Eight and 16 for the New York Yankees since before the start of the first subway set in
04:04Queens at the end of June.
04:08JJ, when you look at this series, the four games that were played this year between the
04:13Yanks and the Mets, because it is the inner city rivalry, because these two clubs are
04:19often compared here in a greater New York City area, does the season sweep for the Mets
04:25add on an additional level of significance because it was against the Yankees on both
04:30sides?
04:31I think it's bragging rights.
04:33You're going into work on whatever it is, Thursday, and you're a Mets fan, you can pound
04:37your chest a little bit.
04:39If you're a Yankee fan, you got to kind of put the tail between the legs.
04:43That's the beauty of the subway series.
04:45I think as far as the overall significance, look, the Mets need every game imaginable.
04:49You know, the Mets are in this tightly congested National League wildcard race, and these are
04:54big games for them because every game, quite frankly, is a big game for them.
04:59And for the Yankees, all of a sudden now, they're what, a game and a half back in the
05:04Orioles.
05:05It's not worse because the Orioles have not played particularly great over the last month
05:09to six weeks.
05:11But their wildcard position has gotten a little bit more tenuous as you see teams in the Central
05:18making moves.
05:19The Astros have made their move.
05:21So I think that more so is that element.
05:26For the teams, these games mean a lot.
05:28The bragging rights, hey, that's that's par for the course if you're living in New York
05:31City.
05:32It's always going to be entertainment watching these two teams go after, but also it's interesting
05:36to see like the sort of the collision of their season.
05:38The Yankees sort of falling off a bit here, but the Mets making a resurgence here.
05:42We call them the Grimace Mets since they unveiled Grimace 25 and 11 since June the 12th.
05:47Similar to what we talked about with the Yankees, like what's going wrong with them?
05:50What's actually going right for the Mets?
05:51How are they finding their footing now?
05:53They're scoring runs.
05:55They score runs on a consistent basis, guys.
05:57So you just saw that graphic you guys put up a few minutes ago.
06:00If you score five and a half to six runs a game, you're going to be in a whole lot
06:04of baseball games.
06:05And I think the Mets have their flaws.
06:07You know, I think their rotation has kind of been, you know, patchwork all year and
06:12they figured out ways to make it work.
06:15I think their bullpen has some serious issues.
06:18Edwin Diaz has not found the form that he had two years ago when he was the best closer
06:24in all baseball.
06:25But listen, I think the Mets easily walked the part of a team that's playoff worthy.
06:31Now this stuff changes in baseball.
06:34You're going to ride the roller coaster a ton over the next few weeks and the Mets have
06:37a big series starting tonight against the Atlanta Braves as far as that National League
06:42wildcard race is concerned.
06:44But I think they walked the part of a playoff team.
06:46I really do.
06:47I think I've seen enough now from the Mets who had that biggest number of what 81 and
06:52a half, 80 and a half, give or take at the beginning of the year.
06:56I think they're going to go over that.
06:57I think they're going to have a winning record.
06:59And guys, when it's all said and done, I think they find their way in the playoffs.
07:01I do.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Back in the middle of June, it was a plus 500 price for the Mets to see the postseason.
07:09Now it's minus 102 with New York in the second of three National League wildcard spots as
07:15of this moment after the subway series sweep.
07:18However, it's a very competitive race for those final two spots in the NL wildcard.
07:23J.J.
07:24Back to the New York Yankees.
07:26Despite the struggles here in the last month, the Yanks remain the favorites to win the
07:31American League from the odds perspective, plus 250, half a dollar in front of the Baltimore
07:37Orioles.
07:38In your estimation, in your mind, are the Yankees still the team to beat when all is
07:43said and done in the AL?
07:46Absolutely not.
07:47I don't want to disrespect our oddsmakers in any way.
07:50They know a lot more than I do, and they have their formulas and their algorithms or whatever.
07:55How can you watch the Yankees and sit there and tell me that a favorites in the American
07:58League?
07:59They got two guys.
08:00They hit the lineup.
08:01They got 10 zillion questions.
08:02Baltimore is younger, more dynamic.
08:04And oh, by the way, they have more prospect collateral to go and trade here at the deadline.
08:11Yankees go match up with the Astros.
08:13How are you going to sit there and tell me that the Yankees are going to go and beat
08:16the Astros when they never beat the Astros when it counts?
08:20I think you're getting a Yankee tax at this particular point in time because of the brand
08:25and because of the uniform and because of the fact that you're going to have a lot of
08:29Joe public folks going to bet the Yankees respect the oddsmakers.
08:34I think they are certifiably insane for pricing the Yankees as the number one favorites in
08:39the American League.
08:40I'm sorry.
08:41Yep.
08:42John, you're streamski.
08:43I would have to agree with you.
08:45The Astros moving up the board now, the third best number at six to one, five days until
08:50the MLB trade deadline this upcoming Tuesday on July 30th to make some maneuvers all around
08:57the bids.
08:58John, you're streamski, the host of New York, New York with the ringer and Spotify joining
09:02us here on Thursday on the early line.
09:04JJ, we appreciate the time as always.
09:06Enjoy the rest of your day.
09:08You got it, guys.
09:09Anytime.
