00:00 All good things must come to an end as we go back around a Monday slate in
00:08 Major League Baseball. Sadly that was the story for the New York Yankees last
00:13 night. The Yanks the hottest team in all of MLB entering Monday and this new week.
00:17 Winners of seven in a row had that streak snap last night up in the Bronx
00:22 against the Seattle Mariners. Five to four the victory for the M's but that's
00:27 not just the story. All good things must come to an end including a 0.00 ERA for
00:35 New York's closer in Clay Holmes. He had not allowed a single earned run all
00:39 year long until last night. It is May 21st and Clay Holmes had not allowed a
00:45 single earned run. He gave up four in the top of the ninth to the Mariners as they
00:52 rallied for a 5-4 victory again snapping that seven game win streak of the Yankees.
00:57 Yeah crazy that's what happens in Major League Baseball over long season. We're not
01:00 expecting closers to go out and not give up a run the entire season and also in a
01:04 non pitchers ballpark like we know in the Bronx. You're gonna give up some runs
01:08 but that was pretty shocking to give a four in the top of the ninth inning was
01:11 typically the blown saves or what Ben? 3-2 lead give up a two run home run. I
01:15 just couldn't get there. Not giving up four runs in the top of ninth and also
01:18 keep in mind that Yankees bullpen where you gave up one in the eighth so five
01:21 runs over the eighth and the ninth innings here. Big game performances
01:25 yesterday in there though throughout the Yankees lineup. Soto goes two for four
01:28 improves the 316 on his average. Aaron Judge two for four now hitting 271 and
01:32 Verdugo who was two of twelve in that Chicago White Sox series goes three for
01:37 five last night with three RBI. So good things happen in that Yankees lineup
01:40 even though it was a loss and the only downtrodden part of that was Giancarlo
01:45 Stanton. The Yankees instead of having four runs to probably have seven or
01:47 eight runs because he just kept grounding in the double plays when we
01:51 just needed 300 foot fly balls, but I digress. Good win by the Mariners. Tough
01:55 loss for the Yanks. Yeah, 20 previous appearances for Clay Holmes this season
02:01 prior to last night, not a single earned run four in the top of the ninth
02:06 against Seattle. Good news for the Yanks after the disaster. You still won
02:10 seven straight games prior. You still lead all of the American League with 33
02:14 victories this year and Aaron Judge and Juan Soto continue to deliver at the
02:20 dish. Both going two for four yesterday. Soto batting well above 300 and as the
02:26 R.S. mentioned Alex Verdugo three for five with three RBI. So that was a
02:32 calamity in the top of the ninth. In the fifth inning yesterday in Anaheim
02:37 everything came crashing down for the Houston Astros. Houston who had won eight
02:43 of their previous ten games entering, nine of their last eleven starting to
02:47 find their footing. This game actually in Houston, excuse me, not in Anaheim, but
02:51 in Houston. The Astros up big entering the fifth inning and then the Angels
02:56 scored seven in the fifth including three home runs to see it all crashing
03:02 down. The Angels win nine to seven in Houston over the Strodes with Fran
03:07 Vervaldez on the bump. The Astros entered the game DRS as a minus 220
03:12 money line favorite. They lose outright to the Halos. Yeah Valdez five innings
03:17 pitch ten hits eight earned runs. This is the one I talked about to open up the
03:20 show. It's one of those where if you are at first five inning better you're
03:23 isolating pitcher versus pitcher. You're feeling pretty good up six to one in the
03:27 top of the fifth inning. Only give up seven runs in that inning and they
03:31 tackled another run there in the sixth inning for a nine to seven victory. If you
03:35 like the RBI props in this game you got them across the board out to me with
03:37 three Tucker stays hot with one but also you take a look at that lineup here that
03:41 doesn't look all that good for the Angels providing nine runs of support in
03:46 Houston. That's one where the Astros like okay we're gonna continue these good
03:49 vibes here pick up series victories. That one ends with a thump here. You
03:52 should have won that game let alone giving up seven runs in the fifth inning
03:55 to not even win the first five innings. Yeah a pretty bad loss for Houston
04:01 however when you look at where things are for the Astros starting to find
04:05 their footing. They had the R.S. as of May 8th been 12 and 24. 12 games below
04:12 500 so far their valley of this season. Again winners of nine of their last 11
04:17 entering last night. They entered 21 and 26 now make that 21 and 27. The Angels
04:24 starting to bottom out as well but a victory yesterday. Los Angeles just 19
04:29 and 29 this season. Now we go to Kansas City where our guy Vinny P but mainly
04:35 his Royals had a big day yesterday against Reese Olsen who now drops to 0
04:41 and 5 this year but only pitched 2 and 2/3 yesterday for Detroit giving up just
04:46 one earned run and five hits but still suffering a loss as the Royals knock off
04:51 the Tigers winning 8 to 3. KC an ever so slight favorite minus 112 on that
04:57 pregame money line total of eight and a half does go over. Yeah he got hit with a
05:01 line drive and had to leave the ball game here. Tough scene because in the
05:04 sixth inning we're anticipating him still probably pitching. He gave up six
05:07 runs in that bottom of the six. You take a look at that lineup the usual suspects
05:10 Garcia is a really good leadoff hitter. He gets an RBI. Our boy Vinny P doesn't
05:15 actually get a base hit but drives in a run and Michael Massey of course went
05:18 three for four yesterday with an RBI. Pretty impressive lineup and look at
05:22 that the Kansas City Royals right now 30 and 19 overall after that easy victory
05:27 over the Detroit Tigers. Maybe this team is legitimate. I have an over of 73 and a
05:34 half for KC's win total this year. I am feeling great. The Royals did not hit 30
05:40 wins until July 28th last year. July 28th well before May 28th and Memorial Day the
05:50 Kansas City Royals have now hit their 30th win of the season and when you look
05:55 at the American League Central the Guardians still maintain a game and a
05:59 half advantage. Cleveland winning yesterday but still it's going to be
06:03 tightly contested for that top spot. Now we go to Tampa at the Trop. The Rays
06:08 booked as a home favorite minus 122 on the money line. I'm mad at myself for not
06:13 believing in Tanner Houck and Boston and just betting the Red Sox as a money line
06:17 underdog because Tanner Houck with the way he is pitching should not be booked
06:21 as a money line underdog even against the Rays. Rafael Devers hits a home run
06:26 for the sixth consecutive game. The longest streak of an individual hitting
06:30 a home run in consecutive games in Boston Red Sox franchise history as the
06:36 Sox go into the Trop and win 5-0. Yeah take a look at that first five
06:40 batters in that lineup for the Red Sox and again a team we didn't expect all
06:42 that much from now sitting at 24 and 24 on the season. At Tampa Bay by the way
06:46 with that loss 25 and 24 so those two teams chocking for position in the
06:50 American League East but Durant, Abreu, O'Neal, Devers and Wong take a look at
06:54 these batting averages 72-69, 255-284 and 350. That's pretty good here man.
06:59 Boston's hitting and now getting some pitching out of guys like Tanner Houck
07:02 that we didn't anticipate being this good here. Maybe it could be a playoff
07:05 run maybe a wildcard run for Boston this season. A couple of those teams in the
07:10 American League East like Tampa, like Boston, if Toronto resurfaces maybe
07:15 making a run to American League playoff contention. Long way to go. More MLB
07:20 recaps coming your way next. Elsewhere around Major League Baseball from a
07:24 Monday night slate we go late night to Los Angeles. The Dodgers hosting the
07:28 Arizona Dimebacks for the opening game of this midweek series between these
07:33 divisional foes. A big third inning for LA. Three home runs in the third
07:38 including a grand salami off the bat of one Frederick Freeman and the Dodgers
07:44 hold off the Arizona Dimebacks with a 6-4 win. Quality start out of Yoshinobu
07:49 Yamamoto. He picks up another win. He is 5-1 to begin this season as the
07:54 Dodgers as a -245 home money line favorite knock off Arizona with the 6-4
08:00 victory. Yeah, Ciccone's been bad pitcher this year for Arizona. Five innings
08:04 pitched, six earned runs. It's just what you get at him. One and four. It's got
08:08 those high X-FIP numbers which means it leads to fly balls and you saw fly balls
08:12 from Freeman and Will Smith yesterday has been pointed out a grand slam from
08:16 Freddie Freeman. But I gotta tell you look at that lineup here for the Arizona
08:19 Dimebacks. Quetel Marte having a very good season 291 right now but Jock
08:22 Peterson has been really good that DH roll hitting 318 cashed in on another
08:26 RBI yesterday but Corbin Carroll goes one for five. That was one of the better
08:30 players in baseball last year hitting 191 on the season. Still not finding his
08:35 way. Three strikeouts yesterday. We expect these type of performance by the
08:38 Dodgers. Just give me something decent on the mound our batters will be able to
08:42 figure out the other team's pitcher. Six to four win. This is what the Dodgers do
08:45 33 and 17 now on the season. We're waiting for the Dimebacks to sort of
08:49 capture what they said last year down the stretch. They just haven't been able
08:52 to do it yet. It's a tough division. They're not getting the pitching they
08:55 need right now. That's all. Yamamoto this year now five and one with a 3-1-7 ERA.
09:01 Did allow seven hits and two earned yesterday in six in a third but did
09:06 strike out eight and had a solid performance registering the win. Freddie
09:10 Freeman that grand slam. Will Smith a solo shot in the third as the same for
09:16 Kike Hernandez for LA as well. To your point about Corbin Carroll batting 191
09:22 that's the reigning National League Rookie of the Year. It has not been the
09:26 case this season in his sophomore campaign in MLB. A doubleheader yesterday
09:32 in Atlanta to round out a four game set that started on Friday between San Diego
09:37 and the Braves. The Padres win game number one a rally in the eighth. A four
09:43 run eighth inning. They win as a slight underdog. Cronenworth two RBI single.
09:49 Manny Machado two RBI double in the eighth inning. Those the game winning
09:54 runs. So in the second leg of the doubleheader San Diego was looking for
09:58 the sweep. The Braves have dropped four in a row at that point. Atlanta responds
10:02 with a three nothing victory to snap the skid. Yeah they really needed that second
10:07 game because also they probably should have the first being a five to nothing
10:09 early and saw six unanswered runs by the Padres in the six to five loss. That was
10:13 a tough one but Chris Sales been very good for the Braves that we talked about.
10:16 You now look at his record on the season seven and one with a 2.22 ERA right now.
10:22 Certainly stepping into the mold that we missed with Spencer Strider going down
10:25 with that elbow injury. We'll see what the Braves have their 27 and 17 but they
10:29 avoided disaster after that first game. Boy if they would have lost a doubleheader
10:32 yesterday to the Padres we would have been asking a lot of questions because
10:36 you can't bury yourself all that much up against the Philadelphia Phillies right
10:39 now but they got the split out of the doubleheader which is usually what's
10:42 expected. The Braves were booked as a hefty favorite with Chris Sale on the
10:47 bump minus 240 on that money line. Total of eight and a half stays well under
10:51 Chris Sale. Seven innings of shutout work only allowing five hits striking out
10:56 nine. He is seven and one this year is Chris Sale with an ERA now at 2.22.
11:03 A great start to this season at the top of that Atlanta rotation of course with
11:08 the injury to Spencer Strider. So the Braves still ten games above 500
11:13 despite some slow play here as of late 27 and 17. They remain five games back
11:20 and yet a hefty odds-on favorite to win the National League East in front of the
11:24 Philadelphia Phillies and these two teams still neck-and-neck it would seem
11:28 at the top of the National League pennant odds. Plus 260 for Atlanta plus
11:33 135 for LA booked as the favorites but the Phil's now less than a five to one
11:39 price plus 470 it would seem Donnie the two at the top all year long may be on
11:44 their own peg. I'm not sure they're in their own tier ahead of Philadelphia at
11:49 this moment. Yeah I don't think so at this time and granted we have a long way
11:53 to go in the summer injuries happen teams play very good baseball teams go
11:56 on the lulls it's just what it is but five game lead for the Phillies this
11:59 early in the season we'll see how far they can extend that Texas Rangers come
12:03 to town here to take on the Phillies at Citizens Bank Ballpark we'll see if the
12:06 Phillies can win yet another series just to keep the pace on the Braves. 34 wins
12:10 the most in Major League Baseball which is crazy. The Phillies have been a long
12:14 illustrious history mostly of losing for a long time it's kind of interesting to
12:18 see them getting out to their best start ever in baseball history in Philadelphia.
12:22 We'll see if they can continue at 70% winning percentage I don't know if you
12:26 can continue it but boy I would love to see it as a fan. And even reaching the
12:31 last two championship series in the National League it was because the
12:35 Phil's rallied in the second half of the year and were great in the playoffs.
12:41 (upbeat music)
