00:00Three tourism industry leaders are urging the government to revamp the Tourism Industry
00:07Act 1992 to weed out unlicensed operators in the sector.
00:12They say urgent action is needed ahead of the upcoming VisitMalaysia Year 2026 campaign,
00:18which the government hopes will attract 35.6 million tourists and generate RM147.1 billion
00:24in tourism receipts.
00:27The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents said harsher punishment and stronger
00:31enforcement are needed as unlicensed operators have denied Putrajaya substantial sums in
00:36tax dollars over the years.
00:39Mata President Nigel Wong also urged the Treasury to allocate more funding to the Tourism, Arts
00:43and Culture Ministry so that it can expand the scope of its enforcement to weed out these
00:48illegal operators.
00:50He also called for a special court to handle complex travel package disputes and clearer
00:54laws to ease business operations.
00:57Meanwhile, Malaysian Budget and Business Hotel Association President Sri Ganesh Mikhil said
01:03there was a need to update other laws like the Innkeepers Act 1952 to address changes
01:08in the industry landscape.
01:10He said extensively promoting Malaysia as a holiday destination without having proper
01:14policies in place would see tourists visit, but the industry and government failing to
01:18reap the full benefits.
