Transcript
00:00In Venezuela, the electoral silence is in place after the candidates closed their campaigns
00:22ahead of the presidential elections of next July the 28th.
00:31In Cuba, thousands of people of all ages gathered in the heart of Sancti Spiritus in the place
00:39that was once the scene of an art of bravery and defense de Moncada Barranc's dress-up
00:47to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the historic event.
00:55And in the U.S., Hollywood video games actors announced that they would go on a strike over
01:00concern about artificial intelligence.
01:04Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrera from the Telesur headquarters in Caracas,
01:13Venezuela.
01:14Let's go to the news, stay with us.
01:30We go now live to our special envoy in Caracas, Juno Sonnerd, who has all the updates as electoral
01:36silence is already in place in Venezuela.
01:38Hello, Juno, so what are the latest news?
01:45Hello Ana, hello to our viewers from Latin America and all over the world from Caracas,
01:51Venezuela.
01:52The election process in Venezuela has entered its final stage ahead of the July 28th voting.
02:00That means from today on the election laws have got in vigor.
02:05That means that the campaigning and all activities of campaigning have stopped, as well as the
02:12sales of alcohol.
02:14There is a general prohibition of gatherings, of rallies, and the borders are closed to
02:21safety reasons.
02:23These are the typical regular laws that regulate the process, the days ahead of the voting
02:30on July 28th.
02:32Yesterday, on Thursday, the campaign of all sides have finished with all candidates making
02:39rallies here in Caracas, the campaign that had started on, to remember our viewers, on
02:47July 4th officially, but had been going on actually factually since months.
02:53So yesterday the current president and candidate Nicolás Maduro has united his supporters
02:59on the Avenida BolĂvar in the city center.
03:03It's difficult to guess the numbers, but I would guess between 100,000 and 200,000 people
03:08were there.
03:09The area was full.
03:11And he has held his final rally speech.
03:14The opposition, the leading oppositional figure Eduardo González and his ally Corina Machado,
03:23who seems to be the actual leader of the opposition, they gathered in the southern part of the
03:30city.
03:31Also difficult to guess numbers, but I would guess approximately 25,000 to 50,000 people
03:36attended that meeting where the candidate delivered his final speech.
03:42So from today on until Sunday morning there is no more campaigning, nor on the streets,
03:48nor in the media, until Sunday morning at 6 o'clock when the election centers will open
03:54and the Venezuelans are going to vote.
03:57Preparations are continuing at the voting centers.
04:01Machines are being established and checked and reviewed for the last time.
04:05Everything seems to be in motion and in preparation.
04:09We remember the republic plan has also been activated on 24th of July with the deployment
04:16of more than 300,000 soldiers of the armed forces who will safeguard and provide the
04:22safety at the election centers, who will secure the machines, who will provide the
04:28citizens with security while voting and while on the way to the voting centers, and who
04:34will safeguard the machines after the elections have finished.
04:38Another important thing that our viewers should remember, the only authority here in Venezuela
04:44authorized to announce any results is the National Election Council.
04:49No other authority can announce any results.
04:53This would be out of the legal system, this would be unlawful.
04:57So on Sunday night we will have to wait until the National Election Council announces results
05:04which will be done when they are close to be irreversible like the final result.
05:10This is the current situation.
05:11The city is calm, everybody is doing his work, everybody is continuing his daily life, there
05:17is tranquility all over the place, and this is the latest situation here in Caracas.
05:22Well, thank you very much, Yunus.
05:25So we'll be right back to you through the days.
05:29That was Yunus reporting live from Caracas.
05:32We are just two days away from the presidential elections in the country.
05:36And now let's take a very short break, but remember you can now join us on our TikToker
05:40account, AstroNews3 English, where you'll be able to see news in different formats and
05:43news updates and more.
05:44Stay tuned for more news.
05:47Welcome back to From the South.
06:11In Cuba, thousands of people of all ages gathered in the heart of the city of Santi Expiritis
06:16in a place that was once the scene of an act of bravery and defense of the Moncada Barraga
06:22dress-up to commemorate the 71st anniversary of this historic event.
06:27The fortress gathers this Friday once again the Cuban citizens in a day full of symbolism
06:34and reflection with the heroic legacy of brave revolutionaries who dared to defy the oppressive
06:41regime.
06:42Survivors of the assault are in a hall squared in front of the barracks to listen to the
06:47words of the speakers who would evoke the bravery and courage of the revolutionaries
06:53who, as the Cuban people do today with the crimes of the North, stood up against tyranny.
07:09In Haiti, several leaders of criminal groups reached peace agreements in the city of Lille,
07:15one of the most violent neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince.
07:19Chauffeur Ana Joseph, who is part of this important agreement, published photos and
07:25videos of some of the former rivals who managed to seal this agreement.
07:30The chauffeur explained that for months there have been no clashes between rival groups
07:36in the areas, although the difficulty to travel through some of its strips continues.
07:49In the United States, Hollywood video game actors announced that they will go out on
07:52a strike over concerns about artificial intelligence.
07:57The strike, the second call by video game dubbing and motion-captured actors under the
08:03Supreme Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, begins on
08:10Friday.
08:11The move comes after nearly two years of negotiations with video games AI, including divisions of
08:21of Warner Bros. and Walt Disney, the CEO.
08:31We've announced a strike on our video game contract, and as of 12.01 a.m. tomorrow, work
08:40will stop on all affected titles for all members of this union until we are able to receive
08:46a counter from our bargaining group that gives us the AI protections specifically that
08:51we need to move forward safely in our work.
08:56Also in the U.S., the Attorney General's office announced that presidential immunity does
09:00not apply to the conviction of former President Donald Trump over a huge money pavement to
09:05former Ronaldo Mobi actress.
09:07While the Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have at least some immunity from
09:12criminal proceedings, the prosecutors leading the case argued that the criminal charges
09:17against Trump derive exclusively from the Defendant Unofficial Act.
09:24There is no immunity for this kind of behavior, which includes a payment of $130,000 to an
09:31all-films actress or mid-annual in order to silence her and avoid being a harm in the
09:362016 election.
09:45The U.S. law enforcement authorities arrest Elmayo Zavanda, one of the most important
09:51drug lords in Mexico and Latin America.
09:53Elmayo Zavanda Garcia, known as the Elmayo Zavanda Mexican and founder of the Sinaloa
09:58Cartel, was intercepted while trying to travel to Texas in the south of the United States.
10:05Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of the Chavo Guzman, was also captured during the operation.
10:10Zavanda had never set foot in a prison and there was a $15 million reward on his head.
10:36On Thursday, in the United States, the vice president of the nation, Kamala Harris, after
10:41a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressed that there is a hopeful
10:46movement to achieve a peace agreement in Gaza.
10:51So I just had a frank and constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
10:55I told him that I will always ensure that Israel is able to defend itself, including
11:01from Iran and Iran-backed militias such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
11:08Let us all do what we can to prevent the suffering of innocent civilians and let us condemn anti-Semitism,
11:17Islamophobia and hate of any kind.
11:22And let us work to unite our country.
11:25I thank you.
11:26Meanwhile, demonstrators in the U.S. gathered near the White House to reject the compromise
11:36between Joe Biden's government and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demand
11:42an end to the Israeli occupation or a genocide war against the Palestinian people in the
11:47Gaza Strip.
11:48It is worth noting that mobilizations nationwide reject the Israeli Prime Minister's visit
11:55to the United States, in addition to demanding the arrest of Netanyahu for committing war
12:00crimes while denouncing the U.S. government's supplies of arms to the Tel Aviv regime.

12:28We tell you soon.
12:29We'll find a short break.
12:30Don't go away.
12:54Welcome back.
12:56In Laos, the plenary session of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN, opened
13:02in Vietnam.
13:03Prime Minister Adolf Soi is attending the three-day meeting, which aims at strengthening
13:09the region's external cooperation.
13:12At the opening stage of the summit, the ASEAN members discussed the balance of the community-building
13:17efforts and the organization's external relations.
13:26Also in Vietnam, officials held the funeral of former Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu
13:32Truong, who died last Friday in Hanoi due to a serious illness resulting from an old
13:38age.
13:39President Dula, Prime Minister Prahim, and other Vietnamese officials paid tribute to
13:45the late Communist leader, Min Aung Hlaing, who also gathered in Truong's house in Lai
13:51Da as two days of national mourning began.
13:55Truong, who had led the party since 2011, was the first leader to serve three consecutive
14:01terms in office following the liberation of the country's economy in 1986.
14:15And now we move on to the ecological crisis.
14:26In China, typhoon Jiaming flew the largest part of Taiwan's provinces, leaving three
14:33people dead and more than 200 injured.
14:36In the city of Kaohsiung in southern China, thousands of people were evacuated after the
14:42passage of the typhoon, while schools and offices in several cities were closed and
14:49stock markets were suspended by the government decree.
15:01On Thursday, the tourist Jasper town lost an important area as widespread continues
15:07to ravage Canada.
15:08Canada suffers a devastating heat wave.
15:11Both firefighters have been battling the blaze for hours as they have not been able
15:16to prevent the loss of hundreds of actresses.
15:19The Florida emergency has been in effect since Wednesday noon, and firefighters are working
15:25hard to keep the area under control.
15:28British Columbia and Alberta, Canada's two westernmost provinces, are facing a wave of
15:33high temperatures that has led to hundreds of wildfires.
15:41In France, world and business leaders have pledged billions of dollars in financing and
15:49committing to the super-virus spotting initiative.
15:52Nearly 500 participants, including 50 heads of state and government, attended a summit
15:57on Thursday led by French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee
16:02President Thomas Bach near the Louvre Museum.
16:05The leaders agreed on commitments in the field of education and employment, health
16:12and nutrition, equality, inclusion and sustainability, among other issues.
16:17In this context, the Senegalese president stated that the Olympics ideal is a two-day
16:22challenge by balancing all its forms, and drew attention to the issues of racism and
16:28radical discrimination that is rooted in sport.
16:36The Olympic ideal is today challenged by the tragedy of war, by violence in every form,
16:44and by the ever-rising inequality among nations.
16:51This is also the chance to get the attention of the summit to address the unbearable curse
16:55or racism, and the racial discrimination which is ingrained in sports within a context of
17:01trivialization of hate speech and xenophobia.
