00:00I've never had a hard time rooting for Dexter. Is that? Are you supposed to struggle with it?
00:07She's asking for a friend.
00:08I'm like, my mom's like, he kills people. I was like, yeah, that's cool.
00:14Well, he doesn't kill good people. He kills bad people.
00:17And he has a code.
00:18All right. Thank you guys so much for coming in today and congrats. We are very excited
00:31about the show. I want to start off with when all of you, or if you did watch Dexter for the
00:37first time. Patrick, let's start with you. Okay. Yeah. I, um, I remember my brother,
00:43who's older, he's like four years older than me, uh, was watching it when I was growing up.
00:49And I think I was like eight or nine. And we were coming into the room and being like,
00:55what is this? And my mom coming in and being like, no, what are you doing? Watching this?
01:00And then years later I started watching it as well. Cause he watched the whole thing
01:04and was like a huge fan of it. Um, and yeah, so I watched it years ago. And when this came around,
01:12I couldn't believe that they were doing this. I was like, this is the coolest thing. Um,
01:16but I was like kind of nervous about the idea of it. Cause I was just like, this was,
01:20I love this show so much. And it was so incredible. And then I read the scripts and I was like,
01:25okay, this, I have to do this. Yeah. Sarah, what about you? I watched the original,
01:30I was a big Dexter fan. I just, I love the idea of this good, bad guy or bad, good guy,
01:37complicated character that you rooted for, even though you knew what he was doing was wrong.
01:41Cause secretly you, we all really want to, there's people we all have on our lists, right? We all
01:46have a few on our list. I'm like, God, I better be nice to Sarah for now. Yes, you should. Um,
01:54I think it was in college that like, cause I didn't watch it when it originally came out.
01:58I was a child and I, I, but I did, I watched it all when it was already out and I was floored
02:04by it. I'm obsessed with it. And, um, maybe this is bad. I have never had a hard time rooting for
02:10Dexter. Is that, are you supposed to struggle with it? She's asking for a friend. I'm like,
02:18my mom's like, he kills people. I was like, yeah, that's cool. He doesn't kill good people.
02:26And he has a code and he has a code. He's messed up before. Yeah. He's made some mistakes,
02:32who hasn't. Yeah. Christian, what about you? Me? I, uh, I loved the show. I was a huge Dexter fan.
02:41I thought it was great. So yeah. So when this came around, it was a surreal, exciting, you know,
02:47I mean, it was one of those shows that you kind of wished like as an actor, you wished you were
02:53a part of it, you know, like, Oh my God, this is just great. And the writing is great. So, uh,
02:58the fact that they've done this, uh, prequel situation was, uh, was beyond belief. And the
03:04fact that they're doing it right with the original writers, with the original showrunner, that it's
03:07really not, it has the core values of the show. Oh yeah. It definitely compliments, you know,
03:15the original show. Uh, but it also gives more insight into those characters that, uh, even,
03:22even Dexter didn't know certain things had happened, uh, prior to, to him, prior to him
03:28being born. So, uh, so it's going to be really interesting, I think, for audiences to make a
03:33lot of those discoveries. Definitely. I mean, with the exception of Sarah, you guys are playing
03:38characters that obviously have been played for many years and are beloved. So I'm curious, like,
03:42were you studying mannerisms or are you studying anything? Did you want to kind of make it your
03:47own? What was the process of doing that for anyone who wants to take it? All right. Yeah.
03:54I, you know, it's so crazy. I, I, I feel like I said this yesterday, but I think when you get an
03:58audition, it could go anyway, the character could be whoever. And I found that really freeing
04:03actually that like Jennifer Carpenter created this character so firmly and I was like, Oh yeah.
04:09I, and I don't know. I just, I feel like there's something about the way the lines are written.
04:14You just, you just say them how they're supposed to sound. That doesn't maybe make sense, but,
04:20um, I think Dexter was like, I didn't feel like I had to study because I felt like it was already
04:25ingrained in me and in the script. And, um, yeah. Yeah. And it's a compliment to the original show,
04:33but also, uh, original, you know, Michael Lehman, the director, uh, just kind of said to us that
04:39we're, we're, it is Dexter, but we are in our own universe here, you know? So we are a lot,
04:45we don't have to do an imitation of anybody. I mean, we're, we're free to bring to it what we
04:50want to bring to it, uh, in order to make it original Dexter multiverse. Yeah. Yeah. It's
04:56Dexter multiverse. And I think we revealed now that Michael's doing the inner monologue,
05:02the voiceover. Um, and so I spent, I spent a lot of time listening to the sweet sound of Michael's
05:09voice in preparation for this. I don't think there's anybody that I have put headphones in
05:15and just listen to their voice all day. It was a unique experience. Um, and it's honestly been
05:22so much fun. Cause like Molly said, it's just like in the DNA of the writing and then, uh,
05:27yeah, to get to bring your own kind of flavor to it while also supporting and honoring what he
05:33already did, uh, has been such a fun challenge. And, uh, yeah, very exciting. You just tell Michael
05:38he has to match, you know, I know. Yeah. I spend so much of my time listening to my own voice.
05:47It's so crazy. That's what I do. That's how I learned my lines, you know? So I like, you know,
05:52walk around and get the headphones in and yeah. So it just made me think about that.
05:56I too at night put headphones on and listen to Christian Slater's voice.
06:01We all be so lucky. Uh, Sarah, for you, is this the first time you're playing police?
06:07I felt like it was, but I was like, maybe I could be. Yeah, actually it is, but I'm,
06:12I'm the forensics expert. So I'm, I'm the scientist. This is my, this is yeah. Cause
06:18you believe me as a scientist, right? I do science-y things. And you're the one who has
06:22his job. I have his job. Yeah. So he's growing into his job. She's the, you know, she's the
06:28one who sets the tone. I'm the lowly intern. And, uh, if there's anyone who can boss an intern around,
06:34it's definitely you. I am. What can you tell us about her? What's, what's fun about playing,
06:42cause we're, you know, we're playing in the nineties and it's, what's interesting is I'm
06:46used to playing these formidable women and she's no exception, but she's almost an even bigger
06:51exception because women didn't run departments in those jobs. They certainly didn't run the
06:55science departments and they certainly didn't do it in Miami. And so you realize that she's got to
07:00be pretty tough to be able to hang with the guys. Although it's great for me because I'm on set all
07:04day long and I'm the only girl like it's, it's actually my dream job. It's great. No, we never
07:10work on the same game. We just waved to each other in passing. I heard, I heard Sarah Michelle
07:17Geller was going to be on this show and they said, and you'll never work with her. I had it in my
07:21contract though. She doesn't know about it. I mean, since it is the nineties, I mean,
07:25Tanya is probably going home and watching Buffy then cause she's a, she's a boss.
07:30Not till later. Cause this is 91. Okay. A little ahead of in the future. It depends
07:37how many years this goes. Then you're really in the multiverse. Dexter has had this new found,
07:43the whole Dexter universe, as you guys say, we'll say DCU, uh, is, is really grown. I had this new
07:49life again. Uh, why do you guys think it is that this show resonates in this universe resonates
07:54with people right now? Cause there's a lot of people we want to kill. Don't do not do not use
07:59that. I think there's something like kind of timeless about just the idea of the outsider
08:07being in Dexter's head. He is somebody who on the surface is probably the least sympathetic
08:12character you could imagine. And yet when you come to understand them and you understand
08:16what the alternative is for him, which is just senseless evil and just killing anyone.
08:22The fact that he channels these urges into the kind of force for good. And he is that anti-hero.
08:29I think that's just like a character that will forever be endearing to us and, and intriguing.
08:36It's a show about complicated people. It's a family. It's about a complicated family.
08:41I think that shows right now are so huge and to break through. It's really hard right now
08:45because there's so much to watch. So shows are getting bigger and grander. And I think
08:49there's always that call where you really feel like, you know, these characters innately and,
08:54and, and you can go back and keep watching it. Definitely. All right. My last question,
08:59what is on your watch list right now? I'm watching the boys.
09:04Hmm. Yeah. That's pretty good. Slow horses. Like slow horses. I think it's great. Good show. Yeah.
09:12I want to watch presumed innocent. Everyone's telling me that's great. That's up next for me.
09:17I have the tackiest answer of all time. Okay. Go on. I have been watching not by choice love
09:22Island because my daughter, this is the best story though, because my daughter went to sleep
09:26away camp and she said, mom, you have to tell me what's happening. Can you watch the show for me?
09:30So I was like, sure. I didn't know it was on six days a week. So my entire life has been
09:35dominated by watching an episode every single night and then having to write to her and tell
09:39her what happened on love Island. And yeah, but nonstop. I, I, when I said yes, I did not know
09:48it was on six days. You can start writing TV rehabs. You can get paid for that. I should
09:54below deck med. I really enjoy that. I do love below. He's just trying to save me from my tacky.
10:00No, I just, yeah. I think it's a, it's a great show. I love that. Thank you guys so much.
