00:00Mr. Speaker, I yield two minutes to the gentlewoman from Illinois.
00:05The gentlewoman from Illinois is recognized for two minutes.
00:08Thank you, Ranking Member.
00:11As I walked in here, all I heard was what I hear in my—in committee.
00:17Constant criminalizing of immigrant communities.
00:20And so, let me tell you, I rise in strong opposition to House Resolution 1371.
00:25But this is more lies, more representations, and more inaccuracies.
00:31When the majority cannot pass bills, what do they do?
00:34They introduce blatantly political resolutions that consistently target powerful women of
00:42color.
00:43See, you can always tell when we're getting closer to an election, because these extreme
00:47members of the Republican Party, they literally turn up the volume under xenophobia.
00:52And they're doing it again with H.R. 1371.
00:55They lie about immigration and public safety.
00:58I mean, when you look at studies, it shows that immigration is actually associated with
01:03lower crime rates.
01:05They fearmonger, they dehumanize, while they're also quoting scripture, which is kind of hypocritical.
01:11And they scapegoat asylum seekers, people who, just like my parents, want to seek a
01:16life of dignity and hope and have faithfully contributed to their community and to our
01:21collective economy.
01:22They are willing to vilify and misrepresent the sitting vice president of the United States
01:28for her diplomatic work to address the root causes of migration from Central America.
01:33If my Republican colleagues actually cared about immigration or border security, they
01:38would address the conditions that drive people to the southern border.
01:41They would pass spending bills and invest in foreign humanitarian assistance and international
01:45development programs.
01:47And they would participate in cooperative efforts to realize a world where people can
01:51build their life they want back at home.
01:54But they've done none of that.
01:56Just this week, I didn't see any of my Republican colleagues at my Congressional Caucus on Global
02:02Migration.
02:03Instead, they want us to waste our time on legislative gimmicks and sham resolutions
02:08to score cheap political points.
02:11Enough.
02:12Seriously, enough.
02:14We've been here, we've done this, it's deja vu.
02:16I am tired.
02:18I yield, General Leigh, an additional 30 seconds.
02:20General Leigh is recognized for 30 seconds.
02:22They continue to shelve their mass deportation BS.
02:28And I'm so tired of it.
02:29Let's get to solutions.
02:31We should be talking about appropriations.
02:32We should be talking about how we make sure that things are working for the American people
02:36instead of criminalizing people that are helping us boost our economy.
02:39So let's vote no on House Resolution 1371 and let's be done with this waste of time.
02:44I yield back to the Ranking Member.
02:46Thank you, General Leigh.
