00:31In Kerala, dozens have been killed by multiple landslides in the hilly villages of the Wayanad
00:36district. Part of the western Ghat mountain range, torrential rains there have caused
00:41riverbeds to overflow. They've taken trees down and wiped out homes and a bridge.
00:46Rescue workers continue to assess the damages and to haul out those trapped under the debris.
00:51On social media, President Narendra Modi said he was distressed by the landslides and his
00:56thoughts were with the injured. Kerala's Minister of Health said they're doing everything they can.
01:02All hospitals are set and we have received some 24 bodies in different hospitals and
01:10many are injured so they are also every possible way to rescue people and to give proper treatment.
01:19Due to the torrential rains, Kerala was put on a weather alert. Schools were closed in certain
01:24areas. The landslides have also created calls to reassess construction permits in such zones.
01:31Meanwhile, scientists say monsoon rains in Kerala have become more erratic
01:35and stronger in intensity due to climate change.
