00:00An Olympic assessment for a second consecutive day with Jacob Kamenker live right here on this Tuesday
00:06from Sporting News on the early line on
00:09Sports good Jacob. Welcome back glad to have you here for a second straight day to look at all that
00:14We saw yesterday in the Olympic Games and preview some more events later on this Tuesday afternoon
00:21Into the evening hours over in Paris Jacob, of course. Thanks for being here once again
00:26I'm glad to be here ready to run through a wall watching Team USA get all these medals, man
00:32And a great start yesterday for Team USA women's basketball in its chase for an eighth
00:39consecutive gold a
00:4126 point blowout over Team Japan in the Olympic opener the United States covering as a
00:4722 and a half point favorite a total of 160 and a hook goes over Jacob
00:52You said that what you wanted to see out of Team USA in the opener was that dominance it is expected
00:58They win a gold medal and do so rather easily
01:00Can they just impress the entire way through?
01:04Certainly looked apart yesterday in the opener against Team Japan
01:08What was your favorite thing you saw yesterday and of Asia Wilson Brianna Stewart and the rest of the American side?
01:15Yeah, my favorite thing I saw was just their ability to take their height the big advantage they had over Japan size
01:21And turn that into a way to win the game
01:24I mean if you look at Brianna Stewart Brittany Griner and Asia Wilson
01:28They combined for 57 points 30 rebounds at eight blocks during the game
01:33So they were really the engine that kept this u.s. Offense going and Chelsea Gray was involved as well
01:39She only had two points, but had 13 assists. She just continued to distribute the ball very well and the United States
01:46Maybe they got off to a slower start than you want but in the first Olympic game
01:50That's often what happens. There's a little bit of nervous energy. Japan was very good from deep early in the game
01:56I think if there's one thing that Team USA can look at in this game that they want to improve
02:00it's their perimeter defense because Japan did make 15 three-point shots, but
02:05Really they have to feel good that their bigs are ready to go and they have the personnel with Chelsea Gray and Diana
02:12Tarassi and some of these other veterans to get the ball into the interior and help them to score
02:18So I think as long as they're dominating in the paint in the class
02:21It's gonna be really hard for any country to beat them. Let alone challenge them
02:26Gold medal Jacob expected here for the women's national team if we take a look here
02:31Finally, it feels like since 2008 we switch sports over to the US Olympic men's gymnastic team
02:37They get a medal and it's a bronze medal Frederick Richard and the boys a Michigan man leading the way talk about us
02:44How it came about here and also how exciting it was to watch
02:48Yeah, it was really a thrilling event for the United States because they went in without much momentum
02:54They weren't great in qualifying. They had some uncharacteristic slips Brody Malone
02:58Who is the star of their team was not good in qualifying?
03:01You didn't even qualify for the all-around which was surprising but almost every player on Team USA was near perfect yesterday
03:09You mentioned Frederick Richard. He was great Brody Malone had some fantastic routines
03:14Paul Judah just came through every single event that he was on felt like he was performing well
03:19But the real hero was Steven netter Osic
03:22I mean the decision to put him on the roster was viewed as kind of maybe not controversial
03:28But some people were saying do you really just want a single event specialist when we have?
03:33Six events that we have to worry about well given how good netter Osic is on that pommel horse
03:39It made sense to keep him on and his ability to come off that bench
03:43With three hours basically on the sideline and just put together a near-perfect performance there to guarantee the u.s
03:51Bronze medal it was fantastic and they just looked crisp throughout their routines
03:56You could tell the energy that was flowing through the their bench was just very high and they felt very confident
04:02So I think it was surprising to see them do so well after a middling qualifying round
04:07But it just goes to show you in gymnastics when you have your best day
04:12You can beat just about anyone and they came pretty close to getting that silver medal, but
04:17Getting the bronze is gonna feel great after a 16-year medal drought
04:22first medal since
04:242008 for USA men's gymnastics
04:27Everybody as a part of the United States team getting Steven netter Osic to the finish line
04:32And then he bursted right through delivering on the pommel horse for Steven netter Osic yesterday
04:39What a moment it was over in Paris. If you haven't seen the clip, I highly recommend you get chills
04:44You can feel the electricity will the American men on the pitch for US men's soccer deliver today final game of
04:54group play action
04:56Against Guinea now the United States a hefty favorite minus 220 in the match
05:01Moneyline Jacob, would you categorize this match against Guinea as a must win for the Americans to advance?
05:09I think so. I think this is a classic case where you have to kind of take care of business
05:13And yeah, they could draw and be okay
05:16But you just don't want to leave it in the hands of France and New Zealand just in case, you know
05:21If New Zealand is somehow able to upset France that all of a sudden things aren't looking too good there
05:25So I think they got to focus on beating Guinea
05:27They got to find a way to do it and Guinea hasn't been a slouch in this tournament
05:32They've they've allowed to I think three goals throughout their two games. They've scored twice
05:37So two one goal losses, so they're gonna be able to keep this closer than people might realize their defense has been pretty solid
05:44They outpossessed New Zealand last game. So I'm not I'm not writing this in as an immediate USA win
05:51They should be able to get the job done, but it might be a little trickier than people realize
05:57Jacob we take a look at the odds here at the fans little sports book here to win the men's
06:01Olympic soccer championship here and grab the gold Francis a plus 150 price Spain plus 220
06:06Argentina 6 to 1 and Team USA at a 29 to 1 price
06:10So if we take a look at not necessarily winning the gold
06:12Is there a realistic chance that Team USA can advance and possibly even metal in this Olympic round? I?
06:19Think they can advance they probably should advance
06:22I think the question with them is going to be can they do enough to metal I'd they'd have some good young talent
06:28I like John Luca Busio a lot and you know Walker Zimmerman is a steadying presence for them
06:34But anytime you get an under 23 team even with those three overage players on the roster
06:39it gets tricky to project out exactly what they can do if they get hot at the right time and they all sort of gel and
06:46Come together. They could go on a little bit of a run
06:49But I think some of these other countries like France and Spain they have these development programs that more
06:56readily get these players
06:59Available to play and just have them in sharper form
07:02So I think the United States team is still probably coming together a little bit from that perspective
07:08So I think getting up to the top tier might be difficult. But like I said, yeah, if they get hot it's possible
07:16You see that 29 to not 29 to 1 price on the United States and the men's soccer tournament the Americans the favorites though
07:24in a women's soccer tournament ever so slightly
07:27plus
07:28165 10 cents in front of Spain a plus
07:32175 number on the Spanish side Jacob elsewhere on this Tuesday over in France
07:39What are you looking forward to the most at the Paris Olympic Games?
07:43Yeah, I think based off the excitement we had around men's gymnastics yesterday
07:47I'm very excited to see the team USA women take the stage Simone Biles
07:52Last time she was in the Olympics
07:54It was the team competition that she had to bow out of when she got that case of the twisties
07:58So I'm thinking that she's going to be really ready to dominate today
08:02And we have the lineups for team USA for that and it seems like they're gonna use
08:08Simone Biles Jordan Childs and Sunni Lee and all but one event that will be Jake Aaron replacing Lee on the vault
08:14So I'm excited to see what they can do. They were dominant in qualifying
08:20They won by about six points in that so they really should win the gold medal
08:24But gymnastics is such a tough sport where you make one small mistake and things to the margins get tighter
08:30So I just want to see team USA go out dominate do what they're supposed to do
08:35It's gonna feel like a nice redemption story after they ended up with silver last year despite being favored
08:41Yeah, Simone Biles the legend the greatest to do it
08:45Can't she lead the Americans back atop the podium the odds makers expecting it team USA minus
08:531100 to win the team all-around
08:55Gold medal Jacob Kamecker from Sporting News. We appreciate the time as always. Thanks for being here this week on the early line
09:03Yep. Thanks for having me guys. Take care
