00:00Marine Department Director General Halim Ahmed has been charged in the
00:05Shah Alam Sessions court with cheating his predecessor four years ago.
00:09Halim, 57, claimed trial after the charge was read before Judge Anita Haroon.
00:15As a Maritime Division Secretary of the Transport Ministry at the time, Halim
00:19was accused of deceiving then Marine Department Director General Baharin
00:22Abdul Hamid with a forged letter from the Transport Ministry.
00:26The letter, dated October 27, 2020, falsely stated that the Transport
00:31Minister had approved an exemption period for shipping companies to ship
00:34heavy-grade oil.
00:36This prompted Baharin to issue an exemption letter, which he would not
00:39have done without being deceived.
00:41The incident allegedly took place at the Marine Department's headquarters
00:44in Port Klang on October 27, 2020.
00:47The charge was framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which provides
00:51for five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
00:55The court allowed bail of 20,000 ringgit, while Halim was ordered to
00:59surrender his passport until the disposal of the case.
