Noah Williams: My mental health’s not great when diving

  • last month
Tom Daley’s diving partner Noah Williams opens up on the psychological toll that comes with being an elite athlete. Williams and Daley won the silver medal in the men’s synchronised 10m platform diving at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Monday. Williams had to overcome the death of his diving coach on his path to Paris. In October 2021 Dave Jenkins, the Development Lead Coach for Dive London, passed away. Report by Jonesia. 00:00My mental health when diving is actually not great. It takes a lot out of you and I think
00:06I'll have to take a long break after this Olympics and see what I want to do and what
00:11will make me happy. I've actually got a psychologist, a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist
00:16who gives me antidepressants. So they obviously support me in whatever way they can but depression
00:22is not really something you can fix just with the support of people. It's not like I'll
00:26win this medal and then suddenly I'm happy every day. The medal was more to consolidate
00:32the fact that I've put 14 years of work into diving and it's genuinely made it worth it
00:37for me, the sacrifice my parents have made and all of that. I don't think it will change
00:42my life if I'm honest. Mental health is a strange thing and I don't know if I'll ever
00:47not overcome depression but just learn to live with it.
