00:00Catholic Taylor Kyle's here for CLNS media inside the walls of Gillette Stadium because it's too damn hot outside
00:06So we brought it inside looks like a jail cell in here, but that's okay
00:09We're in front of a live studio audience three producers one of our friends from past poet Brian Hines over there
00:14To recap day seven of Patriots training camp a reminder. We're powered by game time
00:19So make sure you head over to game time use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase
00:23Metallica is actually doing sound checks inside of Gillette Stadium
00:27Shaking yeah every 45 seconds, but you can get over to game time and you can get some tickets to the Metallica concert
00:34Well done. Yeah, thank you. Appreciate it. Not bad. We're getting better at this thing. We're a little bit a
00:38Little bit more laid-back on the podcast instead of the stand-up
00:41So yeah, it's fun to just hang out and watch Jackson spark over there. Ain't that right Jackson Tolliver?
00:47Fall yes, sir at Jack's tall on I don't know if that's this thing
00:51Anyway, I'll play live from inside Gillette and we're gonna talk about day seven because Drake May
00:55I thought had his best practice of training camp today
00:58He you know, he was showing command of the offense making some pre-snap adjustments had a lot of good throws
01:03I thought he was putting the ball where it was supposed to be
01:08Good that obviously that he had that crossing route to Jalen Polk. He had that
01:12Outbreaking route to Mitchell Wilcox. Those are I thought the two highlights. Yeah, but overall I thought he was the best quarterback of the day
01:17And you mentioned to earlier on our stand-up that's now posted on
01:21Patriots press pass that the other two quarterbacks not named Jacob reset had good days as well
01:26So if I'll hand it over to you a little bit more detail into the quarterback room and what you saw today out on the field
01:30Yeah, it was a pretty solid day all around I'd say for the young quarterbacks
01:34Drake may like you mentioned had a couple of blitz beaters won the shallow cross to Jalen Polk and then later
01:39He actually appeared to check before the play into a tight end screen
01:43So I believe was Jacob Warren that got a lot of love from Jacoby were set
01:47He was fired up after the play one of those things where you figure behind the scenes
01:51That's something they're probably working on trying to improve not the first time. We've seen that from Drake managed Kobe Bursett
01:56So considering he's had a bad last couple days
01:58Especially with the pads with maybe the processing and the speed of everything ramping up
02:02It was nice to see Drake may capitalize on this opportunity. The Patriots were in shells today. No pads
02:07Yeah, so again the intensity I don't say the intensity was lower because there was a lot of red zone
02:11There was full field
02:11They did a lot but in terms of like knocking guys around and really the threat of a live pass rush
02:16Live quote-unquote, right? Um, there wasn't as much of that and Drake may did look better accuracy was definitely improved
02:22I thought early on when they were throwing in one-on-ones and on air
02:25He was a little bit off but definitely figured it out. There were a couple throws honestly one
02:30I think was just poorly played by KJ Osborne on a fade in the red zone
02:33He had a one pass that I wasn't crazy about for the most part
02:36He was solid everywhere else that one that you mentioned a Mitchell Wilcox. That was a beauty
02:40it looked like the defense was in cover to and Drake may was able to just drop it in the bucket to Wilcox with two
02:45Defenders closing in and then the other guys Joe Milton had a beautiful throw. I believe was a one-handed grab
02:51It was either him or Bailey's happy. I honestly got him mixed up those those third quarterback competitions
02:56They kind of like it's a good one, right? They overlap. They're both playing pretty well
02:58They are this is the first day actually thought Bailey's happy stood out for a positive reason
03:02There was a play where he navigated the pocket then stepped up and threw a touchdown and Joe Milton
03:06I thought had the lead they've been switching off these third quarterback periods
03:10But Joe Milton really seems like he's the guy who's gotten more reps and kind of had a bit of favor
03:14He continues to find the right man is generally accurate
03:18He could still take a lot of heat off those short throws, but for the most part again
03:22I thought it was a solid day from the young quarterbacks Jacobi percent on the other hand a little streaky with his accuracy
03:26I didn't really love his ball placement. That's kind of the second day
03:29I've noticed that from him but as a veteran I expect him to shake it off tomorrow when the pads come back on
03:33Yeah with Drake May and this sort of again
03:36I thought today was a bounce back day for him compared to what we saw in the first two days with pads
03:40On Monday and Tuesday, but I still find that
03:43Yes, he has this, you know laser arm that you know, we're all trying to know and love right
03:48that's kind of why he came he came out of college that way as a as a quote-unquote gunslinger and someone who can just
03:53Put the ball where nobody else can
03:55I feel like he's almost trying to place the ball too much
03:59Like if he's not just slinging it like we've seen in college
04:03and I feel like that's why he might be a little erratic or like his accuracy might be a little bit off because
04:07Instead of just going out there and kind of just playing ball
04:10I don't know. I got the feel that especially during one-on-ones were those, you know, those ones were a little bit inaccurate
04:15I think he's just trying a little bit too much. He doesn't look he's just slinging
04:18I don't know if you've seen the same thing, but there's definitely something off with his I
04:23Guess with his rocket arm that we all think we know I think for me. It's really just been the processing
04:28I think I just sped up and then like when your minds working
04:30Yeah
04:31it kind of has a chain reaction where your feet probably aren't gonna be where they're supposed to be because you are a tick behind
04:35And then other things start to kind of feel rushed and they have to compensate
04:40So, I don't know if I think he's placing the ball, but there's definitely been inconsistency in his process physically and mentally
04:45So I'd say that today was one of the first times in a while that that didn't seem to be an issue
04:50I thought his footwork looked more calm thought he was getting through his reads and diagnosing the defense faster
04:54So yeah, maybe again, we all know there's been some inconsistency, but this was a nice day to say today
04:59He was putting it back on. I agree. I feel like he's sort of he's starting to put it all together slowly
05:03But surely I'm definitely not gonna lose the starting job to Joe Milton
05:07I don't know if you saw our friend coward say that today on Fox Sports one. It's not a thing
05:11Not a thing they play completely different quality of opponents. There's dip. Yeah, that's for so many reasons
05:17Yeah, but a lot of talk about the quarterback room, but let's uh, well, we'll hit the offense defense special teams in a second
05:22But let's quickly take a look at the attendance today just from a 30,000 foot view Marta Mopu
05:28Offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley jr. And tight end Raheem Bell all did not practice today weren't out there for stretch
05:34I believe Bell and mop who made their way to the field later on to kind of observe but
05:38They did not participate Jabril Peppers and David Andrews both come back after missing
05:43Practice on Tuesday Peppers or Andrews missed both days Peppers missing one. He left Tuesday with what looked like an injury. So he
05:52He I think he came out to practice
05:54He was there and then he left and was back and forth, but he didn't actually end up participate. Yeah
05:58And then Marcus Jones leaves practice as well
06:01Walks off with a trainer and Sean Wade is still out there on contact Jersey
06:05So he actually left with an injury as well later in practice after actually having a really competitive session. He stood out a few times
06:10Yeah, so that defensive backfield is they're hurting a little bit
06:13I mean obviously mop who hasn't basically played all summer and then Jones Peppers and Sean Wade all leaving with injuries over the last couple days
06:20we'll talk about that more in the defensive period but
06:24Overall, what do you make Andrews comes back?
06:26Which I thought was huge. I'll kind of let you I'll give it to you for what we heard from Andrews after practice
06:30Yeah, so David Andrews clarified why he actually hadn't been at the last couple of practices
06:34Apparently his youngest son has actually been at the hospital Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence
06:40Andrews made sure to show love to their staff for everything they've done. He was saying he's waiting on word from his wife
06:45So hopefully that situation obviously improves
06:48We also heard from David Andrews about Christian Barmore situation
06:51Actually, a lot of parallels have been drawn between Barmore and Andrews
06:54Obviously because the center had to deal with blood clots in 2019 and ended up missing the entire season
07:00He did point out that these are different situations and you never really know, you know
07:03What someone's a situation is but that he was looking forward to speaking to Christian and checking in on him
07:08But Andrews in terms of his on the field stuff
07:10He participated early on and warm-ups and a little bit of early work
07:15But when he came to team period Nick Levrette continued to be the starting center
07:19Maybe you know the team just given David Andrews a little bit of a veterans mental day off considering everything he's going through
07:24But it was good to at least see him back out there on the field
07:26Yeah, let's transition from that then into the offense, which I thought overall was a better day
07:31Down in the red zone. Sometimes it's kind of it's tough to succeed down there when you know, the field shortens like that
07:36But I thought they did well
07:37There was a couple obviously solid throws from Drake May down in the red zone
07:42Overset as well hits Antonio Gibson on a nice angle route for a touchdown. So some improvements there overall, but you mentioned
07:49Nick Levrette and David Andrews, so let's talk about the offensive line because
07:53after four practice four consecutive practices with consistency in
07:58Really the front four minus Andrews because he was out with at tackle and guard
08:03They make a little bit of a switch today and vederian low plays left tackle and Caden Wallace bumps down to that second team
08:08So today it was low
08:10So on what low so, is that right?
08:15So leverage. Yeah, Mike on why new and chooks of course, so a little bit of a switch up
08:20Obviously we mentioned it we were talking about it early on but giving Drake May a little bit more
08:25Frankly of a better offensive line on the second team, but what did you make of the switch?
08:29How did you think vederian low worked? And did you think Drake May I?
08:33Guess lucked out and played better with Caden Wallace on his left side
08:36So what I want to acknowledge it this seems more like a competition thing than a Caden Wallace wasn't necessarily cutting it thing
08:42One with Scott Peters system a major part of it is that you have to make mistakes. So, you know how to improve
08:48So the fact that vederian low was the left tackle one vederian low is mostly been a right tackle with the second team
08:54Which I didn't love I've mentioned a couple times
08:55I think he is significantly better on the left side if you look at the statistics if you look at the tape
09:00He's clearly more comfortable on that blind side and he actually was solid today again
09:04I always say when there aren't pads only so much you can glean from offensive line play because you're really not making much contact
09:10But still, you know, there are times where vederian low will lose pretty quick quickly and cleanly early on reps didn't see that today
09:17So that was solid from him Caden Wallace
09:19I didn't notice him for any bad reasons with that second offensive line and then Calvin Anderson who'd actually been the top left tackle on
09:26The second team was on the right side another reason
09:28I think this is more about competition and Caden Wallace not playing well because if it was a matter of quality
09:33Calvin Anderson's looked very good on the left side for the second offense
09:36So you'd think he would be elevated to that starting spot if it was just Wallace isn't good enough
09:41We need a veteran who we know we can rely on and vederian low like I mentioned was out of place on the right
09:46So I this really just feels like another one of those wacky days on the offensive line
09:49Yeah, I'm kind of throwing it off as a fact that Chucco Cora for remains solid at that right tackle spot. He isn't moving
09:56I think it's partially because the offense knows if you keep him where he's been a solid starter throughout his career
10:01You know, at least that's not gonna be a liability. So again, I'm kind of going back and forth
10:06It's a strange situation, but I wouldn't say necessarily the Caden Wallace is being punished or anything. No
10:11It's just another one of those days where they're seeing what sticks on the left side
10:14Well, that's why I think it's it is a strange situation because Caden Wallace has been good that often that first five offensive line has
10:20Been good over the first four days
10:22So I don't really know why they're trying to tweak with it and mess around with it and I understand, you know
10:25Moving guys around I get that
10:28And you want to see what you have in a guy like vaderian low in that for you know
10:32When he plays on the first team, he's also going against first-team defender
10:35So you kind of get the test and see you know what he can really withstand
10:37So I guess you kind of especially in a day that's not in pads
10:40You can kind of screw around a little bit more and we talked about those first couple days in without pads
10:45Where it's more of a fundamental thing and trying to figure out, you know
10:48Where they're putting their hands and how that's so important in this Scott Peter system
10:52So another day no pads and they go with low instead of Wallace, which again I'm with you
10:56I don't think that's an indictment on Wallace whatsoever because he has been so solid and was so good throughout those first couple days
11:03Just kind of weird to me because again we talked about
11:06Having five guys that you know
11:08Look in this is Barth Barth talks about it where what Dante Skarniecki would always say five guys looking through one set of eyes
11:13I know exactly where they're going exactly what they want to do on every single play and to kind of mess with that
11:19Kind of you know raises raise my eyebrows anyway, so again, we'll see what happens tomorrow
11:23We'll see where they go get back in the pads tomorrow
11:26See if it's Wallace back out there who I think has earned the right to still to be that left tackle
11:30And I think to that next next Thursday is gonna be ultimately the first test where that really goes Gerard Mayo said that they hope
11:36To have it
11:38Towards the third preseason game their first, you know, first five offensive linemen
11:42It is a long time. But again, they're they're messing with it
11:45They're kind of tweaking things around and seeing what they have. So you can't necessarily I can't necessarily find myself hating on it yet
11:50But again raises the eyebrows a little bit why they would move Caden Wallace off of there
11:54so moving on from the offensive line, let's go to the wide receivers because I
11:57Think I'm buying I think I'm buying with Taekwon Thornton selling he had a good day today
12:01He had another good day today again prefacing it with it's only August 1st. We haven't hit the preseason
12:06We haven't hit a joint practice. It was another non padded practice for Taekwon Thornton
12:11But he's really stringing together some really solid couple days
12:13He beat Christian Gonzalez twice in the red zone today a couple touchdowns
12:17Has yet to get hurt which is a huge thing for Taekwon Thornton
12:20I think it's all gonna come down to next Thursday when they actually put the pads on against another opponent
12:25But what are you seeing from 11?
12:26And are you buying it as much as I am or am I being crazy for buying stock in Taekwon Thornton?
12:30I'm not buying Taekwon Thornton stock until I see him in multiple regular season games proof. He can be on the field
12:36I don't play an execute and win, but I will say he's taking advantage of his opportunities. That's all you can ask him to do
12:41He's out there on the field. He isn't missing time
12:44He hasn't appeared to get banged up when the ball is thrown his way. He mostly catches it. He had one
12:49Drop today. Really?
12:51It was a scramble drill should have been a sack
12:53Jacoby reset got out of the pocket and tried to hit him and the front pylon of the end zone Taekwon tried to make an
12:58Extending grab couldn't bring that in but he did before that be Christian Gonzalez on two one-on-one reps pretty cleanly
13:05Honestly looking back at it
13:07I thought Christian Gonzalez maybe could have been more competitive in coverage and tried to close the gap a little quicker
13:11But it's really hard to know how he was playing it considering Taekwon is that speed guy?
13:15And then he also beat Alex Austin during a low red zone period for a touchdown on another impressive place
13:20So yeah, I would definitely have Taekwon Thornton this guy whose stock is up, but just because like everybody else
13:26He's only wearing the uniform that his teammates are wearing
13:28So again, not necessarily buying the stock, but the price is definitely going up. All right, I like it the other two
13:36Good analogy here from Taylor Kyle's
13:38I see we have some comments in the chat saying they can't hear anything from Brian and Jackson over there, but I think we're fine
13:43They're good people over there. Anyway, let's go to the other wide receivers the other young guns Javon Baker Jalen Polk Baker
13:50I know you mentioned earlier had a good day getting open and one-on-ones
13:54Couldn't really bring that to sex to success to 11 on 11s and then Jalen Polk kind of has a down day today
13:59What did you see from Jersey number one in Jersey number six?
14:02And I don't want to say you're worried about them because it's one down day
14:05But I feel like Polk finally is kind of taking took a little bit of a dip where he's basically been mr
14:10Consistent for the first throughout the first six days. I think for me
14:13It's just that they were quiet during team drills like Javon Baker and Jalen Polk
14:17We're both getting open during one-on-one Javon Baker is consistently open and one-on-ones just more than anybody else
14:22I feel like Polk gets just enough separation where he can make a play without always having to be disrupted
14:27Whereas Javon Baker is getting like a foot on defenders consistently the accuracy from the quarterbacks just been kind of funky
14:34But then in team drills Jalen Polk, I will give him credit
14:37He is continues to be someone who mixes in with the first team and the second team
14:41They just haven't really done a whole lot with Javon Baker
14:44He had an opportunity to make a 50-50 ball kind of catch was really more
14:48Contested than 50-50, but wasn't able to do that that actually happened twice in the last practice
14:53So I'd like to see him bounce back making more of a tough grabs that we've seen him capable of making and then just Jalen
14:59Polk again, it was quiet. There's a lot of people that they're throwing to it's not necessarily that I saw him
15:03Not capitalizing any opportunities. He and Javon Baker both had drops in the past two practices
15:09I didn't see either of them drop a pass today
15:10But yeah, you'd like to see more from those young guys considering again if this offense really wants to exceed expectations
15:16It's probably gonna be on the backs of those two young receivers, but tomorrow in pads
15:20We'll see if they can make some more things happen. Yeah, I want to give a quick shout-out to to Hunter Henry big red zone day
15:26He's always good in the red zone, especially during one-on-ones. He kind of shined he shined today. That's his kind of bread and butter
15:32He's been their leader in touchdowns for the last couple seasons
15:35So I feel like him and Jalen Polk who we saw yesterday or Tuesday become sort of a red zone threat
15:40I think number one and number 80 85 there
15:43We're gonna be able to work off each other a lot and do
15:45Do a lot in the red zone for the Patriots this season also
15:47Keishon booty had a really nice grab in the back of the end zone looked like a one-handed grab. He's made a play
15:53He's not getting a ton of quality reps because there's a lot of guys ahead of him and Rager and Thornton have been consistent enough
15:59Kind of towards the back of that X receiver depth chart, especially Javon Baker as well
16:03But to his credit every single day
16:05He does something or some, you know tight window throw that he ends up making in a short win in a difficult window
16:11So, you know again you want to see more from booty, but with the opportunities he's gotten he's pretty much capitalized
16:16So I'm not sure if he's gonna make the roster
16:18It's still an uphill battle uphill battle there, but he's making a case for himself outside of Juju Smith Schuster
16:24I think Thornton Rager
16:26and booty have all done enough for themselves to make a realistic case to be sort of one of that last wide receivers on the
16:32Roster, so it's gonna be tight when it comes down to it over these last couple weeks
16:35Alright, we're gonna get to the defense. We're gonna get to special teams
16:37We're gonna wrap this thing up in just a second
16:39But first a quick word from our friends over at game time. We'll be right back

18:00Before we get to defense. We were reminded by our friend Brian Hines who is in the room with us
18:05Typing away on his pads pulpit back in that we did not mention number three pop Douglas whatsoever during our wider server portion
18:11So we're gonna bring in Brian Hines
18:13To the show to give us the lowdown on what he saw from number three still in that red non-contact jersey
18:17But Brian, thanks for joining us. I'll hand you the mic for the entire lowdown on what you saw from the Patriots
18:24Law receiver today. I thought he was the best receiver on the field today. Maybe no, he was better than Tyquan Thorin, but
18:30He's still in the red non-contact jersey, but he's participating in team drills and he was uncoverable out there today
18:36No one the worst his worst
18:41But the guy who hurt him the most was his quarterbacks
18:44Yeah, he was open every play, but Jacoby missed some high
18:48Jacoby threw a pass behind him in the end zone
18:51Then there was a miscommunication with Drake May and then he finally caught one from Drake May and it was like a little high
18:57But he still went up full extension snagged it and it was a big gain
18:59So, I mean he was their best receiver in the spring. I thought he's been
19:04He's only participated in team drills through two days here, but he's been awesome. He looks like pop. You just can't touch him on defense
19:12He's been awesome and I thought Drake May looks a little more comfortable out there with them like he knows the the Josh Downs
19:18We've heard that comparison a lot. So
19:20Pop Douglas very good today and good connection with Drake May. Yeah, I'd agree. We haven't we just haven't seen that one
19:26Thank you, Brian, but no Brian nailed it
19:28I mean, we just haven't seen two Mario Douglas get significant snaps for so long
19:32You kind of forget but today was the most active he's been in the entirety of training camp
19:36No, obviously he's in the red non-contact
19:38So having the shells on probably had a lot to do with that
19:40But he was unguardable on slants like was getting open every single time and quarterbacks weren't hitting him and then yeah
19:47There was a weird play where Drake May threw it way wide on a quick out and he took responsibility
19:52It looked like a miscommunication, but maybe Drake just threw wide of him. But yeah to Mario Douglas
19:57It was really cool to see him out there
19:58Actually got a grouping that I have been waiting for since these guys got dragged
20:03We had Drake May we had poke we had pop Douglas and we had J Vaughn Baker
20:08My soul almost left my body. It turned into just a short throw to Jalen Polk. But yeah, I got so excited
20:14That's what you want to see that's by like midseason best-case scenario
20:18Very lofty because we're talking about like three rookies probably starting at some point
20:21But those guys are the core of your offense. It feels like moving forward. So that's the future in action
20:26That's why I keep saying it's a 2025 team
20:27That's like the the core of the offense start of next season into like, you know
20:31Next training camp a year from now. That's the grouping you want to see how they're making plays every single day throughout the summer
20:36I know Pete so that's the that's the offense now moving on to the defense
20:39I want to get to Devon gotcha what he told us
20:42I want to get to the signing of Mike Purcell this afternoon as well
20:44But first I want to talk about the young corners today that were tested because we mentioned
20:49That Marcus Jones and Sean Wade both leave today that really threw
20:54Alex Austin and Marcellus dial into the mix with that sort of ones grouping
20:5927 the six-round pick out of South Carolina. I thought he looked good today for what he was kind of called upon there
21:04all of a sudden because
21:07Because Sean Wade leaves and then when Marcus Jones leaves Jonathan Jones has to bump inside and there's this all of a sudden
21:12They're really testing the depth of this cornerback room
21:14And I think after last season where we saw Jack Jones go up. We saw Marcus Jones go out
21:18We see Christian Gonzalez go out and all of a sudden they're relying on guys like Austin and Marco Wilson
21:23It quickly turned into that house of cards that we kept talking about last season
21:27But today that depthless test and I thought they looked pretty good
21:31Yeah, Marcellus dial got a lot more rum than he's gotten in the past typically been really with the threes
21:36But he wasn't just with the twos. He was actually with the top defense across from Christian Gonzalez again
21:41Alex Austin was still healthy
21:43They got some run together as well
21:44But I thought it was significant that someone like Marcellus dial
21:47Seventh round pick a lot of tools that are intriguing but has a long way to go
21:50It was cool to see him out there. I didn't notice him in a bad way
21:53So that's pretty good Alex Austin did lose and give up a touchdown to Taekwon Thornton in the low red zone
21:59Yeah, exactly. He was on fire
22:02If I'm looking at the wrong camera the entire time my bad if I have anyway, um, yeah, so solid Dave Marcellus dial
22:09Alex Austin the only time I noticed him was on that Thornton touchdown
22:12Hopefully that's a good thing because I wasn't giving up anything anywhere else
22:16But yeah
22:16It was also disappointing to see Shawn Wade and Marcus Jones go out because both guys were having very competitive
22:21Practices Shawn Wade's been competitive the past two days and also Marcus Jones feels like every practice
22:27He either has a breakup or he's in the hip pocket and gives up a touchdown or a reception
22:31Just because the guy makes a really good catch. So
22:35Hopefully those guys can get back on the field as quickly as possible
22:37Yeah
22:37I like I like the way you kind of teed up dial there where we only notice them because I feel like I'm always looking
22:43At the numbers across the board like okay Gonzo's here Alex Austin's here, etc. And we see 27. It's like oh, that's a different number
22:49Here's that Marcellus. Oh, you turn to me. He's never ignore it. Yeah, right
22:52So again, it was good to see all of a sudden he got thrown in
22:54I see him communicating to
22:56Calling inside with the safeties and stuff like that's such a like a huge hurdle that I feel like guys have to get over is
23:01I'm not only understanding the defense
23:03but being able to communicate with the other guys that are out there with and know what to do and when and I thought he
23:07Looked awesome in that role too. I mean to that point
23:09Miscommunications were a bit of a problem with the defense, especially in the red zone
23:12Obviously if you make one tiny mistake Gonzo mentioned like if you have one step, that's the wrong direction
23:17You can end up giving up a play
23:19Jonathan Jones seemed like he had a miscommunication with Brendan schooler and Jalen Hawkins
23:23I need mentioned after practice the communication wasn't good enough
23:26If you go back to last year's film even Alex Austin the moments where he appeared to struggle the most
23:30We're on the crossing routes or with all the man match at the Patriots play
23:34Which basically is man coverage until somebody goes in a certain direction
23:37Then you pass them off to somebody else to usually to avoid pick plays. That was where Austin really struggled
23:42Sometimes he looked like he was confused as to what his assignment was and who he was picking up
23:46So it's not an easy thing to do
23:48So again, as you mentioned very cool
23:50The Marcello style was able to get on track and be that vocal presence in the back end
23:53Well and to today was the first day we saw a lap from the defense
23:56The offense was running laps
23:58You know the last couple days with false starts and miscommunications on substitutions and stuff
24:02We saw that from the defense today
24:03Like you said so they weren't on it
24:05They end up running their lap and get themselves together a little bit
24:07But it's not all it's not only an offensive thing here and doing them where where teams the team screws up a little bit
24:12So let's move on
24:14From the corners to the defensive line where Devon got Chuck we talked to him after practice following him signing that two-year extension yesterday
24:20The Patriots also just signed Mike Purcell a guy who has been here in the building in the past as a practice squad player
24:27This comes on the heels of obviously the Christian Balmore blood clot situation and gotcha being here
24:32I know that we talked about on our defensive stand up what you can watch on Patriots press pass from outside before we came inside
24:37to the nice air conditioning here
24:39just how the
24:42Balmore injury and the gotcha signing if they were kind of conjoined or not
24:45They obviously play different positions, but you still want kind of meet in the middle of the the defensive line like that
24:51And so what did you make of what gotcha to say?
24:53What do you make of him being back here?
24:55And we can talk about judan a little bit as well because well, let's cover gotcha first. We can move on to judan
25:00Yeah, so Devon gotcha. It was kind of funny. He got his extension
25:04He got his deal. But when asked after practice if he was happy he alluded to his wife telling him
25:09You can't always get what you want, but you always have to be grateful for what you have
25:14He did get less money than what Grover Stewart had on his contract extension
25:18So I think that's what Devon gotcha's goal was didn't quite get there
25:21But at the same time even Grover Stewart gives a little more pass rush than gotcha does who's in no offense
25:26He's a pretty much a non-factor in passing situations
25:29So made sense for the team continues a trend where they've been getting a lot of good deals
25:34For the players that they've extended and resigned. I know some people think Devon gotcha is overpaid
25:38I disagree considering with this 3-4 defense for the Patriots in the scheme where there's a lot of two gapping you look at Grover
25:45Stewart and Delvin Tomlinson two guys he compared himself to they play in schemes or there's a lot more penetration
25:51You can make more plays behind the line of scrimmage and create disruption
25:54Whereas those two gappers you don't find them all over the league because you most a lot of defensive schemes
25:59Prioritize that one gapping type of style. So I think what he got paid was pretty fair good to have him back out
26:05I'm not back out there. He's already been out there
26:06But nice to see that he got the situation, you know, not that he wanted but something that at least, you know
26:12Made him and the team happy enough that there's no more drama
26:15Yeah, they meant the fence there obviously with Devon gotcha as it was reported yesterday two-year extension worth
26:20I think up to 21 million 16 and a half
26:22Fully guaranteed someone who hasn't got his extension yet that he's so desperately wants is Matthew Judon
26:27But Matthew Judah was back on the field today doesn't come in the main entrance doesn't do his signing the autographs and playing catch with
26:33Fans and stuff, but he does show up to practice comes in the back end
26:36of the practice field and
26:39With his helmet with a jersey walking around a little bit and then ends up participating and being a full participant
26:45So whether he liked it or not Jude on was here after missing the last couple days in pads
26:50Do you think it means there any closer?
26:52Do you think it was just hey?
26:53Because dry may have mentioned before practice who they had that they had a conversation a good conversation and that they're gonna move forward
26:59So do you think we're any closer to a deal?
27:01Does it is it more or less promising that he was actually out there today?
27:03And do you have any confidence that they end up getting a deal done?
27:06So it's tough because they weren't in pads today
27:09So Matthew Jude on the fact that he sat out in pads a lot of time with these hold-ins or holdouts
27:15Whatever what have you the players won't participate in padded practices because that's where your highest risk of injury is
27:21So if this were padded, I think we'd have better perspective
27:23But either way, I think it was a huge development that judan was even here if you've watched our previous shows
27:28I've mentioned that I thought this was headed towards a very ugly place
27:31Not only do you have the whole incident where Jude on is asked to leave comes back in sandals and a t-shirt
27:36Then is asked to hands up in the air, right?
27:38And then is actually by two different top members of the Patriots brass and then isn't even in the building the next day
27:43You know that seemed like something that was beginning to snowball and could potentially turn ugly
27:46But Gerard Mayo mentioned before practice that they have a good relationship and he wants to keep things internal
27:51But he said God that Jude on is gonna be out here
27:54He's gonna be participating and that was the case Jude on really seemed like he was just trying to you know
27:58Fall into the background a little bit not draw attention to himself. He did lead the defense during conditioning drills
28:04I thought that was a cool 180 from his last appearance. Um, so if they really did squash this that would be fantastic
28:10I feel like there's some level of good faith on both sides
28:13I
28:14would say the optimism that something's gonna get done is obviously higher the fact that Jude on was here and we know that he is
28:19Unhappy after responding to the Diana Rossini report yesterday and the team offered him a contract and saying no. Yeah, they didn't
28:26Don't make me out to be the bad guy again. So, you know, it's impossible
28:29I think to know whether or not they really made progress
28:31But it at least seems like they have mended a bridge I wasn't sure could be mended
28:35So again unknown how this is gonna turn out and how effectively this regime handled the situation
28:40But at least like with gotcha, he holds in then pretty quickly goes back to participating right Jude on all this happens
28:46But he still returns to the building and you know goes back to just being
28:50Good teammate the guy that he kind of sold himself as when he spoke to the media so positive signs, but we'll see what happens
28:55Yeah, I think even after that that incident the Jude on saga of Monday where he's you know
29:00He's looking around and throwing his hands up in the air and sitting on the pads and talking to Mayo and stuff like that
29:05You would not that you would think but I like the fact that his teammates have still come out and stood by him
29:10Yeah from Andre Stevenson on Kay Adams and we will have Jude on we want him out here and gotcha saying today
29:14We just want to see him get paid. We want the best for him. Like I feel like
29:18Everybody understands what's going on? And even though he did kind of you know, have that episode if you will on Monday
29:24That's fair. They've sorry. I think that's the nicest way to put it as this is an episode
29:28but you know again just it's it's a business at the end of day and sometimes you have to do things like that sometimes you
29:34have to
29:35Hold out in ways that you might not want to and that felt like a lot the last straw for him
29:39Again off obviously yesterday. He's tweeting out that they're trying to make him look bad and things like that
29:43So we'll see what happens from here
29:45I wonder when that conversation really was because that tweet was that like one in the afternoon and then they had a conversation at some
29:50Point between then and now who knows but again out there practice
29:54So a positive sign a positive turn for the Patriots as our edge rusher Matthew Jude on
29:59Still in the midst of this contract squabble quickly before we preview
30:03Tomorrow's day 8 practice on Friday special teams. We had a couple of special teams periods today. We saw some kickoffs
30:09I think it was our first time. We saw like the new kickoff rule sort of being
30:13Fully ran with you know, a full kick return team and a full kickoff team not much to take away from it
30:19But I think it's worth noting that they actually practice it because one week from today is their first preseason game
30:23And then in a kickoff period towards the end of practice Chad Ryland goes four for four and Joey Sly goes three four
30:29So, what do you see? What do you see from the kickers?
30:31Do you think a Ryland truly has the leg up in the competition or can Joey Sly take it over eventually?
30:36I think you have to say that Chad Ryland has the leg up now pun intended for sure
30:40Yeah, that is Brian Hines applauding in the background if you can hear it
30:43Oh, but yeah, there's not been a day that Joey Sly is outperformed Chad Ryland the past two practices Chad Ryland is outperformed Joey Sly
30:50Yep, this is what we've been wanting to see. I felt terrible about it
30:52I think we all felt terrible about it kind of, you know
30:54Digging Chad's grave all the way back in the spring and then early on this summer, but credit to him
31:01I'd say he was one of the winners of camp because now he's stacked positive days, which is what you want to see from him
31:06I you know, he's got the new he's got Tom Quinn on board. Tom Quinn has worked with a bunch of really great specialists
31:12So you're hoping that would help Ryland reworked his kicking form, you know ask Brian more about that if you'd like to but yeah
31:18I really do think that was a huge win for him and he needed this positivity. So great to see for the second year
31:24Yeah
31:25you talk in in different sports like goalies and hockey or psychos and they can just like gotta
31:29Get through the mental game and turn their brains off and even if they have a shitty day in that they come out and they'll
31:34Block they'll have 30 saves the next day
31:35I feel like Ryland's done a good job of that where every time we talk to him
31:39He's even keel and he hasn't changed and I feel like
31:41He's kind of a psycho in a good way where he can turn his brain off and be like look
31:45I'm just gonna rebound and be a better kicker and you hope that's the case because that's what you need guys like Adam
31:50Vinatieri
31:50Steven Guskowski the best in the business can turn it off turn their brains off kick it and go kick a game when it feels
31:56Oh, so hopefully we get that that rebound from Chad Ryland after again a struggle of a season last year
32:01And then not a great spring. He's looked good so far this summer. All right, Taylor
32:05That's probably gonna do it for the day 7 recap, but day 8 we go into tomorrow
32:09Likely in pads, I think again
32:11They mentioned today that they had a couple they needed like a day off. I think from the pads
32:15So now they'll probably get back into it on Friday
32:18So, what are you looking for heading into Friday's practice again in full pads down here in Foxborough questions are always on the offense
32:23I want to see a Jacoby Bursett can bounce back after two not so great practices
32:27I want to see if Drake may can get back in pads and maybe take a step forward building from number 10
32:32Yeah, it doesn't need to be perfect
32:33But I just want to see progress because it seems sped up
32:35We haven't seen him throwing downfield since the pads came on J Vaughn Baker and Jalen Polk
32:40I'd like to see them show up with some level of consistency whenever they get their
32:43Opportunities on the offensive line, obviously, it's gonna be a big one to watch whether or not the Darien Lowe remains at left tackle
32:49Maybe they're doing you know, everybody gets three or four days. We could see something like that
32:53So that those will be the big places that I'll be looking at all the premium positions on offense for sure watch for Caden Wallace
32:59I want him back at left tackle so bad now the pads are coming back on and Drake back
33:03I'm looking for the Drake my practice. It's sort of become my tagline over the last couple days, but
33:08Eventually, he's gonna come out here and kick ass and shine and dice up a defense whether it's in joint practices coming next week
33:14Whether it's tomorrow before the weekend who knows but every day
33:17I'm sort of waiting to see Drake may show those true colors those true Carolina blue
33:21Colors out here in Fox are with the blue the red white and blue. So that's gonna do it here from Gillette Stadium
33:27He's Taylor Kyle's. I'm Mike Catholic. Thanks for watching. Thanks for tuning in here on Patriots press pass
33:31Make sure you rate review subscribe. We'll be back tomorrow for another
33:35Training camp recap after practice. So make sure you keep it here with us on CLNS and CLNS media calm until then
33:40Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. Take care of each other. We'll see you next time. See ya
34:04You
