00:30It's the end of a block of Patriots practices, which means it's crossover time.
00:40Patriots beat Patriots daily, taking you through the last three days of training camp.
00:44Alex Barth, Brian Hines, Taylor Kiles with you on this Saturday afternoon as Patriots
00:49wrapped up training camp nine, block three of the summer.
00:53Big folks on the passing game today, over 45 passes thrown in team drills, most of them
00:58from Jacoby Brissett and Drake May, but before we get to the quarterbacks, guys, I actually
01:02want to start with the wide receivers.
01:03I thought today was a wide receiver dominant day, and for the week, too, or at least for
01:07these three days, we got to talk about Pop Douglas, because he got back into team drills
01:12this week, and Taylor, the difference is immediately apparent when he's on the field.
01:16Yeah, this is one of Pop Douglas' more quiet days, but I think it's just because passes
01:19went to other people, but he absolutely looks different.
01:22We've been saying it, the way him and Javon Baker move is very different, but Pop specifically,
01:27you know, Jacoby Brissett mentioned and kind of joked about how it's different thrown to
01:30a guy who's that short, but once they get that chemistry, it's going to pay off, because
01:34when there's one-on-one situations, Mario Douglas looks like he's pretty much in his
01:37own world, because there usually aren't defenders very close to him, so you've got to give a
01:41tip of the cap to Mario Douglas, finally got to really get involved in team drills, and
01:45he looked excellent.
01:46Brian?
01:47It's different out there with him, and they had three of their best days of the summer
01:50when Pop Douglas comes back for team drills.
01:52Shocker.
01:53In three days, right?
01:54Yeah, shocking.
01:55And yeah, as Taylor said, he seemed quieter today, but as I was just, you know, writing
01:59my notebook, I went back, because I didn't mention Pop Douglas, and I'm like, oh, he
02:03still caught three or four passes, which ranked at the top of the receiver, so the skill set
02:07is different, and the offense, surprisingly, looks much better with Pop Douglas out there.
02:10Well, the other thing, and Pop talked about this when he spoke the other day, and Jerron
02:15Mayo spoke about this today, asked, well, do you expect Pop to get more attention this
02:19year?
02:20And just to paraphrase here, they said yes, but if he does, it's going to create opportunities
02:24for the other guys, and you're seeing some of that, and one guy who's made the most of
02:27the opportunity, especially today, I thought today was his best practice, he had a couple
02:30good ones, but today was his best practice, and that's KJ Osborne, and maybe, Taylor,
02:35you grind the film more than anybody, so I'll ask this to you, I'm not saying he was a bad
02:40red zone receiver in Minnesota, but I don't remember him being this red zone weapon, Osborne
02:44in Minnesota, but boy, did he turn it on when they got into the red zone in the last few
02:48days, and it's multiple ways, he's getting open on the goal line, some of these shorter
02:52shiftier routes, contested catches in the back of the end zone, like, one, do you remember
02:58him, what do you remember of him, of the red zone in Minnesota, and is this something you
03:02think translates, because they haven't really had a red zone threat at wide receiver here
03:05for a while.
03:06Yeah, he definitely wasn't much of a red zone presence at all with the Minnesota, at least
03:09last year from what I saw.
03:10And they had some other good red zone threats there, so.
03:12Right, of course, but his production really came on those intermediate in breakers, like
03:16the crossers or the deep in cuts, but I think if he had gotten consistently accurate passes
03:20from his quarterbacks over the past, like, four or five practices, we'd be talking about
03:23him more, because there have been reps where he was open, and a lot of the times, guys
03:27were just over or under throwing him, so nothing came of it, but we've seen the past couple
03:31days, he's had some of the most impressive catches we've seen.
03:33Yesterday, it was against Christian Gonzalez, he wins on a corner route, I think Jacoby
03:37Bercet threw an anticipation throw, which ended up a little behind him, but he still
03:40comes down through contact and makes the grab, and then today, they kick off an end of half
03:44situation with a throw to K.J. Osborne, deep down the sideline, another one that was under
03:49thrown, he comes back and makes a catch through Alex Austin, and even when you don't talk
03:53about the receptions, there are still moments where you see him getting open in some of
03:57those iso situations, so he's been a kind of pleasant surprise, very quiet guy whose
04:01stock is rising.
04:02So, Brian, let me ask you this, K.J. Osborne could end up being a sneaky important player
04:05for this team, because we don't know if Kendrick Moran's going to be able to start the season,
04:09the two rookies have looked good, but they're rookies, you'd like them to be able to ease
04:12in, that kind of leaves K.J. Osborne as the guy, at least early on in the season while
04:17you wait for some other things to flush themselves out, Pop too, dealing with the injury, how
04:21do you feel about him maybe playing a significant role in September?
04:24Yeah, like, it's been very easy out there to get excited about the rookies, right, like
04:28Polk's looked good, Baker's looked good, but they're rookies, and you would prefer a veteran,
04:33a steady veteran presence in that room, and if Kendrick Moran isn't ready for the start
04:37of the regular season, K.J. Osborne's that guy, and, you know, there's some veterans
04:41in the tight end room who we'll talk about, but that's your veteran receiver, and he's
04:46a guy leading into camp, we were kind of talking about like, it's only a one year deal,
04:51they could get out of it if they really wanted to, kind of a quiet spring, but no, he was
04:55very good today, best practice of the summer, and yeah, with the situation and the young
05:00guys in the room, like, he's on the roster.
05:02Yeah, we were chatting with Mike Reese during practice today, and Mike, I think he tweeted
05:05this out, called him a lock, I completely agree, alright, those are the upset wide receiver,
05:10we do need to talk about some of the, I don't want to say, well, partially downs, but let's
05:14get, let's do Taekwon Thornton first.
05:17Didn't practice today, was on the field for a little bit, not in uniform, well, in a jersey,
05:21but not in pads, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald tweeting out a little bit ago that
05:25it's not expected to be anything serious or long term, which, okay, but it is Taekwon
05:31Thornton, you never know with him, I still think, if he continued to have the camp that
05:36he was having, he was going to make the team.
05:38He had been one of their better receivers, but, where's your concern level at now, even
05:44with the Callahan report, with him missing time, Brian?
05:47High.
05:48Fair, fair.
05:49That's the story, can he stay healthy, and sure, it's not considered long term or serious,
05:56but, that's right now, yeah, is it a soft, like, we don't know what it is, like, it could
06:00be a soft tissue that could linger, or, you know, who knows, so just the fact that this
06:05is popping up right now, kind of early, that he's missing a day, with the past history,
06:10that's a concern for me.
06:12And this is now the second practice that Taekwon Thornton is missing the offseason, he missed
06:15the last session in the spring, which we all talked about, kind of, you know, had to go
06:18into that break with a bad taste in your mouth, because it's, again, Taekwon missing practice,
06:23and missing today, even if it's not a long term thing, it's just he hasn't been able
06:26to maintain that momentum, and that's what we want to see from Taekwon, now, obviously,
06:30hopefully he gets back soon, and can have some strong preseason games, so, you know,
06:33he can get some of that back, but, it's got to be concerning, I will say, though, Jalen
06:37Rager didn't do much, as the top X receiver, to kind of, you know, push Taekwon Thornton
06:41further, or anything like that, so, for Taekwon, it wasn't the worst thing missing today, because
06:46the guy who replaced him didn't do a whole lot, I don't think any of the X receivers
06:49did a whole lot today, but still, you want to see Taekwon Thornton out there.
06:52I think it's more, even if this ends up being a short term thing, right, like he misses
06:55today, has an off day tomorrow, he's back out there, it's just a reminder of, even if
07:00he is having this good camp, how much, how big of a role can you really pencil this guy
07:05in for, you don't want to start planning things around him, if he's going to be in and out
07:10of the lineup, and it's just kind of a reminder that, as good as it looks at times, I wouldn't
07:15consider him a consistent option, because.
07:19And Adrian Caneliano also mentioned that the team is very aware of his health status, and
07:22the fact that he has missed time, that was another part of that, yeah.
07:23No, the team knows that too, I think.
07:25Alright, I mentioned the ups and downs, I feel bad doing this every day, because I feel
07:30like we're kicking a guy when he's down, I don't want him to come across like we're taking
07:33shots, I don't mean it to be that way, but we have to talk about what we see, this was
07:38another rough day for Juju Smith-Schuster, he had a bad drop in the end zone on a throw
07:43from Joe Milton, during Drake May's one minute drill, there was a player, I thought it was
07:48a fine throw, it was maybe a little bit outside, but Juju just did not get, he couldn't get
07:52out of the route, he couldn't get out of the break, the ball ends up falling incomplete,
07:56it just, it's not there, and he doesn't look like a player that they can give any playing
08:00time to, Brian.
08:01And even the body language, at times, kind of looks like a guy who knows, like, he might
08:07not have it anymore, there was one, you know, in that Drake May period, he's walking back
08:10to the huddle, like, very slowly, his head kind of looked down, so, yeah, he's done nothing
08:15to justify a roster spot at this point, and, like, they're at a point where they just have
08:19to eat the money, and just end kind of the Juju experiment here.
08:23It's been hard to watch, and to a point you wonder, is he going to finish the summer?
08:27It's a fair question.
08:28And I'm not trying to be condescending or rude, but truly, at times, I'm just like,
08:32he should retire, because it's tough to watch out there, you got all these athletics, especially
08:37young receivers, and even the veterans, when they're out there making plays, Juju isn't
08:41getting a lot of separation, and then on a play like the Joe Milton throw, where Joe
08:44Milton threw him open, he's kind of going downfield over the middle, and Joe Milton
08:48puts it out in front of him to beat the defender.
08:50But right on his hands.
08:51Yeah, and Juju had it, and couldn't come down with it, and that's what we've seen, where
08:54even the quarterbacks are giving him opportunities, basically saying, hey, 50-50 ball, be a winner
08:59here, because that's how it feels like he's going to survive in the league, and we haven't
09:02seen that.
09:03So again, it's not easy to watch out here, we're not trying to dog on the guy, but it
09:07feels like, it just feels like Juju may not even finish the summer out here.
09:10All right, before we move on to the quarterbacks, one of you said something about the tight
09:13ends, Brian, I think it was you.
09:14Do you have a thought on the tight ends?
09:15I mean, Hunter Henry was awesome today, he had a really good day, very good day.
09:19He had, the Patriot Social posted it, he had a one-handed catch on the end zone, along
09:23the sideline.
09:24Thank you.
09:25Unfortunately, it got called back, there was a sack on the play, so they brought it back.
09:30I don't know about that, nobody was that close to Jacoby Reset.
09:33I was, Phil Perry, credit to him, he said Tristan Hill was in his face, and had a sock.
09:39Tristan Hill was-
09:40The guy who had a good day.
09:41Yeah, he had a good day today, but all right, fine, we'll give it to Tristan Hill.
09:43But I mean, they brought the offense back, so something happened where they didn't count
09:47it, but it was an incredible catch.
09:49He got two feet in, it wasn't Hunter Henry's fault, and then in the one-minute drive to
09:53end practice, he caught a touchdown.
09:55So we know he can play in the red zone, he can catch touchdowns.
09:59So Hunter Henry, again, going back to those veterans in the room, having a reliable guy
10:02like that, a really good day from him today.
10:04And to add on to that, Jacoby Reset, or Hunter Henry said after practice that he does feel
10:07like he and Jacoby Reset are actually building some real chemistry.
10:10It's clear, you can see it.
10:11And you saw it on the touchdown, where Jacoby Reset threw it, like got the ball and just
10:15put it up there.
10:16He threw it to his spot.
10:17It was not close to being out of his break, and then he just ran under it, and then dove
10:20and made the catch.
10:21Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper do not sleep on the veterans.
10:25Hooper has been a little less consistent, but Hunter Henry's been a monster.
10:28Very difficult to cover in the red zone.
10:30Actually, Del Pettis had a rep where he was all over Hunter Henry and broke it up.
10:34And so now, it's like, well, people don't usually do that because the connection's been
10:37so good.
10:38And I think today was the first time in the open field, we really saw Jacoby push the
10:41ball downfield to Hunter Henry, did it on back-to-back plays for a two-minute drive.
10:45A couple of lesser days for Austin Hooper.
10:46He had a bad drop yesterday.
10:48He had one today.
10:49I think it was a miscommunication or something that led to an interception by Jacoby Reset
10:53in the red zone.
10:54But overall, yes, as much as we've kind of hyped up guys like Taequann and the rookies,
10:58the most consistent options in the passing game for Jacoby Reset have been the two tight
11:02ends.
11:03So they deserve credit.
11:04Let's talk about the quarterbacks.
11:05Let's start with Drake May, because there's something very interesting happening with
11:09Drake May right now.
11:11Usually with rookie quarterbacks, I remember this was a big talking point in Matt Jones'
11:14rookie camp.
11:15Red zone work is the last thing to come along, because it's a smaller space, everything's
11:20happening quicker, you have less room to operate.
11:23For whatever reason, when they get in a red zone here, Drake May is just dotting it.
11:28And then they go to the full field, and it's not there.
11:31Now maybe some of that is less time to think is good, because he can't overthink things.
11:36But another really good red zone period today, he had a great throw to Jalen Polk in the
11:40back of the end zone.
11:41He had a ton of zips splitting two defenders, but he was 3 of 11 overall in 11 on 11s.
11:46His one minute drill goes throw away, overthrow, the miss to Juju on the timing, and then he
11:52had a ball batted down the line of scrimmage.
11:54I think that was Tristan Hill again.
11:58It's been weird to see, because it's the opposite of what you would expect.
12:01I do think the processing is some of it, and the read and react of it all.
12:05But Taylor, what's been your read on kind of the two sides we've seen of Drake May in
12:10this camp?
12:12The red zone stuff wasn't a shock.
12:13Because if you look at his college tape, Drake, I remember looking at it being like, you really
12:16see how good Drake May is in the red zone, because you see the ball placement, the accuracy.
12:21We haven't seen the running ability, but that flashed as well in college.
12:23Well, he's been trying.
12:24He hasn't been afraid to scramble in this camp.
12:26That's true.
12:27But then when you talk about the open field stuff, honestly, I know there was that situational
12:30drill where they actually had a down count, and like you mentioned, he got the batted
12:33pass and everything.
12:34I didn't put that against him.
12:35He actually tried to air it out for the first time that we've seen in those drills.
12:38He did overthrow it to Javon Baker.
12:40With the throwaway, I thought nobody was open, or it looked like there maybe had been
12:43a miscommunication.
12:44He was like, I'm not throwing into a bad window.
12:47Then he had the drop, and I don't really count that against him.
12:50I do think that the defense, Evan Lazar mentioned this, I thought it was a great point, where
12:54they're rotating coverages.
12:55They're going into cover two, so he can't really throw downfield.
12:58They're blitzing him, which is speeding up his process.
13:00It looked like there was a play where he dumps it off to Mitchell Wilcox in the flat to beat
13:04the blitz.
13:05So it's really hard to say, when we can't see the film, when we can't rewatch these
13:08plays, why he isn't going downfield as often, especially because I know it's his nature.
13:12I did think he took a step forward today.
13:14I think he still looks more comfortable, by far, than he did in the first couple of padded
13:18practices.
13:19You want to see continued growth, but I would call this a positive day for him overall.
13:22Okay.
13:23Brian?
13:24Yeah, I think, you know, the numbers, the passing numbers, they're going all around
13:27Twitter, right?
13:28And it's 3 of 11, it's 0 for 4 in the last minute drill, and it doesn't look great.
13:33But then you start adding context to that, and it's drops, it's Juju falling on routes,
13:38it's throwaways.
13:39That's a lot of where these incompletions are coming from, quick pressures.
13:42I think we can talk about the tackle situation, which was bad today, and he had 3 or 4 would-be
13:48sacks in there as well.
13:51But I think the positive is the process looks better, right?
13:55The mental side may be slowing down a little.
13:57This is his third padded practice, so maybe things are slowing down a little bit for him,
14:04and the results aren't there completely, and it's not all his fault, which is why I would
14:07still love to see him get some opportunities with the starters.
14:10But I think the process is looking a little bit better and cleaner for Drake Mayweather.
14:14And I just want to go back to the point you made that Evan brought up, and I did a show
14:16with Evan earlier on the Sports Hub YouTube page, which you can check out, where we got
14:20into this a little deeper.
14:21Good plug.
14:22Thank you.
14:23There, subscribe to the Sports Hub YouTube page, as well as the Patriots Press Pass page.
14:26You want a ton of Patriots content.
14:28I see you in the chat saying you're starving for Patriots content.
14:31They're not, there seems to be, I don't know that it's on purpose, but if it is, it makes
14:37sense.
14:38There seems to be a point of not allowing Drake May to do what he wants to do, and not
14:42let him do what he does best, which is create off-structure, get outside of the pocket,
14:46extend plays, which, good!
14:48He said that was his game yesterday.
14:49Right.
14:50He's like, I'm going to keep playing my style.
14:51I'd rather them force him to play in-structure here and learn how to do that, than just let
14:57him play playground football, and you get out there week one, and he sees a cover three
15:01or cover two for the first time, and doesn't know what to do.
15:04It'll be really interesting to watch him in the first preseason game, and Gerard Mayo
15:08didn't commit to playing him, but you'd imagine he's going to play in the first preseason.
15:11He should play.
15:12I'll say that.
15:13But Mayo also said the first game, it's very vanilla, right, like you don't game plan,
15:16so seeing maybe a less complex defense, and I mean, the Panthers defense isn't as talented
15:23as the Patriots defense, so not as good as a defense, like it'll be interesting to see
15:26him in game action, maybe gets a little more aggressive, gets more of those chances to
15:30push the ball downfield.
15:32I hope so.
15:34Alright, let's move on to Jacoby, or do you have one more point, or we can get to Jacoby
15:37Bursette?
15:38Yeah, we can.
15:39Alright, so let's move on to Jacoby Bursette.
15:40He continues to be, in terms of where players are playing, compared to the expectations
15:45coming in.
15:47Has any player in this camp exceeded expectations, Brian, more than Jacoby Bursette, after another
15:53strong day today?
15:55Exceeded expectations more, I'll go no, I'll go no, I think Taylor might, Taylor had high
16:01expectations for Jacoby Bursette.
16:03Yeah, for me it's true, yeah.
16:05He's looked pretty much like what I thought he was going to look like out here, which
16:07is consistency, he knows what he's doing.
16:10I think we kind of just have to live with, sometimes the ball placement's going to be
16:12off.
16:13One thing that we talked about was, when he's going deep, the ball hangs up.
16:17I think we have to just be prepared for something, like these receivers are going to have to
16:20make plays on contested passes, because I just don't think his arm is where it was,
16:24maybe earlier on in his career, but for the most part, yeah, he looks like the starter.
16:29As much as I wanted to see Drake maybe push him a little bit, I don't think it's particularly
16:32close.
16:33What I've liked is, and you mentioned that the ball's hung up a little bit, which they
16:36have a bunch of contested catch receivers, it's the team they've built, it does feel
16:40like the defense is forced to defend multiple levels, and I know that sounds basic, that
16:44hasn't been the case here for a while.
16:46Like, he can access all the different parts of the field you want him to access, and he's
16:50done it to good success so far in his camp, Ryan.
16:54Yeah, and that was like his interception today, it was one of those deep shots, kind of hung
16:59up, tipped by Azizi Hearn, intercepted by Jalen Hawkins, so, but he's not, he's aggressive
17:06still, right?
17:07Like, it doesn't waver his confidence, he'll still throw it downfield, and if he's connecting
17:10on these at, you know, a 50% clip, like, you're still generating a good amount of explosive
17:15plays and that's worth it, so, yeah, there's going to be some misses, he's going to overthrow
17:19some guys, especially if he's throwing to a short pop Douglas, right, but hopefully
17:23he gets that, you know, fixed away, but yeah, for every miss it seems like there's one make,
17:28so that's a good clip to throw.
17:29The other thing I think that's been great is the energy is real, it's there, and after
17:35the, I think it was the deep ball to Rager, one of those deep balls, I mean, fist bump,
17:40he's screaming, he's, you know, smacking offensive linemen on the back of the head, things like
17:44that, and even when it's not, when he's not the one making the play, Drake May on that
17:48good throw on the red zone, he goes right up to Drake May, he's, you know, hitting him,
17:51good job, good play, things like that, like, he, there's a level of energy there that you
17:56can tell is contagious with the rest of the offense.
17:59Yeah, I love both of those points, because one thing I've been thinking about is, any
18:03time there is a positive play, I think Drake May, just, there's so much going on for him
18:06in his head, I think when he's comfortable, you'll see the leadership in him come out,
18:10you'll see him be that raw, raw guy, but you notice, even when he makes a good play, it's
18:14not a really, it's a very subtle, just like, yeah, right, and I think that Jacoby bringing
18:19that, kind of just some levity, and just like, hey, it's not that serious, he's even said
18:22it himself, when we make big plays, we should celebrate, it's the NFL, it's not going to
18:25come easy, so I love that, and also the aggressiveness, where with Mac Jones, you know, Bailey's happy
18:30was better about it, but last year, you really saw Mac Jones with everything going on, the
18:34aggressiveness was gone, like, where he's checking into plays, not taking those shots,
18:38Jacoby Brissett is trying to see what he can and can't get away with, that's a big reason
18:42we keep mentioning the tight ends, because those big bodies, he's like, I'm just going
18:45to put it on a back shoulder or somewhere, I'm going to give you a chance to make plays,
18:49and with this passing offense, where there aren't a lot of, you know, proven guys when
18:53it comes to those explosive plays, they're going to get them, because I think Jacoby
18:56Brissett is going to try his best to capitalize on those opportunities, which should give
19:00them a better chance to be, you know, a competent offense, whereas in the previous years, or
19:05at least, especially last year, they were so conservative, it felt like it was impossible
19:08for them to actually get anything downfield.
19:11More offensive line developments today, I want to get to that, but first, let's hear
19:14from our friends at Game Time.
19:16Dog days of summer here in Boston, which means it's time to get to some games over at Fenway

20:22Last minute tickets, lowest price, guaranteed.
20:45So we saw Caden Wallace, he's now back at right tackle.
20:49Vidarian Lowe staying at left tackle on that top group.
20:52Look, they got a game in five days, and these game reps are so, so valuable when it comes
20:59to determining who your offensive line is going to be.
21:03I kind of feel like we're going to see a group with Vidarian Lowe in there for the game.
21:06Now, if Druk's core force hurt, you can't put him out there, that is what it is, but
21:10Gerard Mayo's been pretty insistent by the end of the second preseason game, they want
21:13to know who their offensive line is, but it certainly feels like Vidarian Lowe's going
21:17to get the first crack at this left tackle job.
21:19Who saw that coming back in January?
21:21Me and John.
21:22Yeah, I mean, it's a position we were worried about since, what, four years ago, you always
21:31say?
21:32You haven't done a show since they had a left tackle?
21:33This is my seventh year on the beat, and I mean, there was a couple years with Trent
21:37Brown being like year to year, that's as close as I've gotten to any left tackle security.
21:42And then you lose Chooks Acorafor, and then your depth takes a hit with Calvin Anderson
21:46not out there today.
21:48So there was a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks today.
21:52It wasn't great.
21:53You know, Drake May was running with Kellen Deich, who they signed yesterday, and UDFA's
21:57Zuri Henry, who we all love, but you know, he's Zuri Henry.
22:00So it's going to be really interesting to see that starting five on Thursday night.
22:05And they have two practices before, so maybe we'll, hopefully Chooks is OK, he's back.
22:12That's the biggest question mark still right now.
22:13Taylor, Vardarian Lowe, Kellen Deich, you've been high on this offensive line.
22:17Can Scott Peters save this?
22:19I think so.
22:20Can the strike system save this?
22:22Like, look, I don't think we think that Vardarian Lowe is a starter necessarily.
22:26That's definitely not on the table.
22:27But I will say, I don't think he's been as bad.
22:29Like at right tackle, I think any time he was out there, it was noticeably bad.
22:33I think at left tackle, he's definitely looked more comfortable.
22:37But yeah, the offensive line situation was not good today.
22:39Caden Wallace didn't look great at right tackle with the ones.
22:42And then like you guys mentioned, Kellen Deich and Zuri Henry.
22:45If you're at home, I doubt you're very familiar with either of those players, and there's
22:47a reason for it.
22:48They know Zuri Henry.
22:49They know Zuri Henry.
22:50I'm sorry.
22:51But an undrafted rookie and then an undrafted guy who's been in the league but has never
22:55been on an active roster.
22:56It was exactly what you'd expect.
22:57So you kind of hope that at least one of Chooks or Calvin Anderson can play in the game, because
23:02especially because they like to send lines for the Lions in those games, it can get rough.
23:07We also had a development with the second group.
23:10After a few rough days for Antonio Maffia at center trying to make that switch, we're
23:13now seeing Charles Turner.
23:15I think we, Brian, we talked about this, or were you on the show with us last night?
23:18Charles Turner.
23:19After all I'm saying, yeah, I'm sure there's a reason they're not giving him center reps.
23:22He got center reps.
23:23He, solid, fine, nothing spectacular.
23:25He had one, it wasn't a bad snap, but Drake May had to go a little outside his frame to
23:29get it.
23:30But you didn't get like the one bad snap a day you've been getting from Antonio Maffia.
23:33He got the ball to Drake May every snap, which is improvement.
23:37Shout out Scott Peters.
23:38I know you watch the show and you listened to us last night putting Charles Turner at
23:42center.
23:43Yeah, I mean, there's not a whole lot to add.
23:45Yeah.
23:46Yay, Charles Turner.
23:47Anything else on the offense?
23:48Offense?
23:49Not really.
23:50I think running backs, we didn't touch on the running backs.
23:52The offensive line, it was another day they didn't generate much on the ground game, where
23:57the first day in pads on Monday, they had a lot of open rushing, like big rushing lanes.
24:02Each back felt like it ripped off a big run, and now it's been two, three days.
24:07One of you mentioned that maybe Devon Godshaw's presence changed that, but it's been two or
24:11three days now where they haven't generated much movement in the run game.
24:14Yeah.
24:15I think they've gotten, like, past two days, it's been a couple nice runs, and then the
24:17rest is just nothing.
24:19I was going to kind of get into that as we touch on the defensive line, because I think
24:22it had more to do with the personnel they had on the defensive front, because Daniel
24:26Equality touched on it.
24:27I asked him after practice.
24:28There was a certain front they had out there where I saw it and was like, oh yeah, no,
24:31this is a run day.
24:32They are not giving you anything.
24:33I want to get to that in a second.
24:35I will say, you know I like to randomly insert UDFAs into the conversation.
24:39That's how we got here with Zuri Henry.
24:41Terrell Jennings, that dude runs hard.
24:45He doesn't go down.
24:46He also had a little wiggle out there.
24:47And Andy, we saw the wiggle today on top of the lower in the shoulder.
24:51He's going to be a ton of fun in the preseason to watch.
24:53I think he's going to get a ton of work in the preseason.
24:55I don't know that he's going to outpace Kevin Harris or even Michael Hasty, but that's a
25:00guy you keep on the practice squad, and maybe next year we revisit.
25:03They might have found a little something there.
25:05I'm not saying Adrian Peterson, but they might have found a little something there.
25:09On the defensive side of the ball, we can start here, Taylor.
25:11You mentioned that front.
25:13We should have a name for this because it's, I think it's just under 1,000 pounds of defensive
25:18linemen in a three down front with Devon Gottschall.
25:21He's playing five tech at one point.
25:23Did you see that?
25:25You had Mike Purcell in the middle, and then you had Daniel Kauai out there with them.
25:29They're going to need to rework things without Christian Barmer.
25:31We know that.
25:33It's not going to look the same.
25:34I don't even mean plug a player in.
25:35I mean schematically there's going to be differences.
25:37Christian Barmer did things, was able to do things that other players just simply put
25:41aren't able to do.
25:44Maybe this is a new look, and it is interesting to me.
25:46Mike Purcell was signed, what, on Thursday?
25:48He's out there running with the top unit.
25:51They had five down fronts.
25:53We know that's a very common front for the Patriots.
25:55Typically it's Devon Gottschall inside with a Christian Barmer, Lawrence guy type, and
25:59then like a Dietrich Weiser, a Keon White, that gets you your pass rush.
26:03Today they went significantly heavier.
26:05First, Mike Purcell, somebody that I think we all thought was going to contribute and
26:08help make up for lost Christian Barmer, well, he was a nose tackle with the Broncos and
26:12continued to be a nose tackle today.
26:14He was the man in the middle for the Patriots defense.
26:16330 pounds.
26:17Yeah, with Devon Gottschall at defensive tackle slash defensive end, we've seen that with
26:21Carl Davis, where Carl Davis would sub in as the nose sometimes.
26:24They'd have Gottschall as more of a defensive tackle, Barmer type, obviously without the
26:27pass rush.
26:28Yeah, Lawrence guy too back in the day.
26:29Yep, exactly.
26:30And then where you'd see Dietrich Weiser or Keon White, they had Daniel Aquale, so you
26:34do get some of that pass rush juice, but still he's a bigger guy who you're expecting more
26:38to stop the run.
26:39I asked Daniel Aquale, like, what's the mentality when you have that much beef in the middle?
26:43He's like, yeah, no, we're building the wall.
26:45You are not going to run on us.
26:46So a little preview of what we could see maybe on some early downs and a reason why I think
26:50they weren't getting anything on the ground.
26:52Also Anthony Jennings, I saw he had to run stuff and got really fired up.
26:55Yeah, I mean, a lot of beef.
26:57So maybe that explains some of the run issues for the Patriots offense.
27:00But one other guy who wasn't in that trio, and we mentioned him a little earlier, Tristan
27:05Hill, like, continues to get a lot of run in Christian Barmore's absence.
27:10And he had the sack that we thought on the Hunter-Henry play.
27:15He also had to run stuff and the batted pass.
27:17So he's getting a lot of opportunities and he's kind of taking it and running with it
27:21here too.
27:22All right.
27:23So we mentioned, and let me say for Gerard Mayo said before practice that he challenged
27:26the defense to have a better day after the offense had a few good days.
27:28They rose to that.
27:30Tough to rise to that without your best player.
27:32And we somehow went through the whole defensive front without mentioning Matthew Judon.
27:35He had a great day today.
27:37Twofold.
27:38One, just football.
27:39X and O's.
27:40He had a couple of run stops early on.
27:41I wouldn't call them run stops.
27:42It was more he was on the edge and forced the run back inside for somebody to clean
27:46up.
27:47And I mean, he's going up against tackles on that.
27:48He had at least one pressure in that two minute as well.
27:51There might have been another one or two.
27:52He beat Kayden Wallace bad.
27:53Like clean.
27:54Yeah.
27:56It'll happen.
27:57It's Matthew Judon versus Kayden Wallace.
27:58It's Matthew Judon.
27:59Right.
28:00Yeah.
28:01The other thing, he looked like he was having fun out there.
28:03He at one point chased Antonio Gibson like 45 yards up the sideline on the one big run
28:09the offense got on the play with Hunter Henry that was brought back.
28:12He starts doing a dance kind of taunting the offense on the side.
28:16He did not look like a guy that was forced to be out there, that was begrudgingly out
28:20there that was, oh, all right, this is what I got to do to get my money.
28:24And it doesn't mean he doesn't want the contract anymore.
28:26I still think he does.
28:27I said this the other night.
28:28Something's going to happen there.
28:29I don't know what, but I would be shocked if we get to week one and it's just Matthew
28:33Judon playing on six and a half million dollars in incentives and that's it.
28:37But the way they've pulled the 180 with him and I still think there's more coming.
28:42I don't think it's simply Gerard Mayo gave him such a meeting, such a conversation that
28:47he decided he's going to do.
28:49And that's it's not to pick on Gerard Mayo like that's an unfair expectation.
28:54The fact that they've gotten him back this far without a deal getting done, it would
28:57be one thing to see this after Penn gets put to paper to see him out that light there today
29:01without a deal getting done, as far as we know, is a very, very encouraging sign.
29:05And I think Gerard Mayo in the coaching staff deserve and Ellie Wolf, who deserve a ton
29:08of credit for that.
29:09Yeah, I will say I was mentioning yesterday how he's coming in through the back.
29:13He's not really going through his routine with fans and he didn't really look like guy.
29:17I don't want to say he didn't want to be out there, but he didn't look like Judon.
29:20Yesterday felt like yesterday felt a lot more going through the motions than today did.
29:25Yeah, and today it was the same early on.
29:26He still came in through the back entrance, no catch with fans, but definitely more energy
29:30on the field.
29:31So maybe it's a process.
29:32I still don't want to overlook the early on early on because it just seems odd considering
29:37what his routine is.
29:39But it was nice to see a little bit of that Judon come out because I really think that
29:42the defense feeds off the energy that he provides.
29:44I think he hit it.
29:45So I'll just say we have an off day tomorrow.
29:48Are we back here Monday with the Matthew Judon situation finalized?
29:53Last off day, we got the Devon Godshaw contract.
29:55So I'll say this about not coming up and playing catch with the fans.
29:58I do want not a logistical thing, but the last thing they need because he'll chat with
30:02fans during that.
30:03The last thing they need is a fan asking him something.
30:05And even if he doesn't answering it, video of him not answering the question, that's
30:09a fair point.
30:10Becoming a thing like it is better.
30:12It sucks because that's such a great moment for fans.
30:14And I love that he does that.
30:16Cordero Patterson used to do that.
30:18Cordero Patterson is the first player I remember doing that.
30:20And I would go down on the sidelines.
30:21This was pre-COVID.
30:22And like parents telling me their kid's day was made.
30:26So first of all, shout out to Cordero Patterson.
30:28I'll always work that out.
30:29But I love that Matthew Judon does that.
30:32I do think it is better for both sides that until there's some sort of resolution here,
30:37it makes sense to maybe not go about that.
30:39I agree.
30:40That's a good perspective.
30:41I don't know for sure that that's why he's not doing it.
30:42Maybe he's just like, I don't want to do this right now.
30:45But in the social media era, you could walk into an unfortunate situation doing that with
30:53everything that's going on.
30:54There's still the oddity of him coming up through the back.
30:57Because the way that they come in, you're not going past.
30:59He's not the only one that comes up the back though.
31:02For sure.
31:03But still, it is different in routine.
31:04But that is a good perspective.
31:05I didn't really think about that.
31:06He maybe just doesn't want to put himself in a precarious situation where he could end
31:11up having a bunch of fans asking him that and whether or not he answers, he looks bad.
31:15Any other thoughts on the defense today, fellas, before we get a quick special teams
31:18moment in?
31:19Jalen Hawkins, second straight day, he was around the ball a lot.
31:23He had an interception on Jacoby Brissette that we talked about.
31:26And also a pass breakup.
31:28I think it was Mitchell Wilcox he was guarding, so a pass breakup.
31:31So he's been involved.
31:32You know, they're missing some guys in the secondary.
31:34So he's been involved the past few days.
31:36And Jerron Mayo said he was a big part of what they want to do.
31:39So that's...
31:40Let's pay attention to that.
31:41I remembered, if Mike Catlick's watching...
31:43I thought of you when you said that.
31:44If Mike Catlick's watching, it was two years ago, three years ago, when Jelani Tavia was
31:48first here.
31:49He signed that first year during the season, had a rough year.
31:52Bill Belichick does a SiriusXM interview, and none of us thought Jelani was going to
31:55make the team.
31:56And Bill Belichick does a SiriusXM interview and says, yeah, Jelani Tavia is going to play
32:00a big role for us.
32:01And Mike Catlick doesn't put him on the roster projection, even though the head coach told
32:05him that.
32:06And I like to say, they'll give us the answers.
32:08We just have to know where to look.
32:10Jalen Hawkins is making this team.
32:11I take Gerard May with face value, and he says Jalen Hawkins is going to play a big
32:15role because it makes sense.
32:17He's going to be here, and he's going to be a factor, Taylor.
32:20And we saw it in the spring, where I started noticing, I'm like, he's repping with that
32:23first defense a lot.
32:24And it was specifically their three safety package in nickel, where they're usually trying
32:28to stop the run.
32:29That's where, you know, everybody who wants Kyle Duggar and Jabril Peppers to be near
32:32the line, I agree in those big nickel fronts, because you can put Peppers in the slot, you
32:36can put Duggar at linebacker, and that's where they thrive, because they're obviously really
32:40exceptional run defenders.
32:41And then Jalen Hawkins was consistently that safety that used to be Marte Mappu last season.
32:46So it was already like, all right, Jalen Hawkins, they clearly like him.
32:50And then after the spring, in the summer, we find out, you know, Jabril Peppers has
32:53all this praise for him, tells us that he was an offseason award winner.
32:59We already found that out.
33:00He had the most points.
33:01That was it.
33:02He had the most points on defense for his effort and all the plays he made.
33:04And then even today, Kyle Duggar mentions the communication, which as that deep safety
33:08is very important.
33:09He said he's always talking, trying to communicate, get on the same page with all the guys in
33:13the secondary.
33:14So we've been getting the breadcrumbs, and now Gerard Mayo kind of gave us the confirmation
33:17that, yeah, no, they're not playing around.
33:19Jalen Hawkins has now jumped, I think, Marte Mappu on the safety depth chart.
33:22Can't make the club from the top.
33:23The other thing Peppers said about Jalen Hawkins, he called him a high energy guy.
33:28When Jabril Peppers calls you a high energy guy, that's a high, high bar to clear.
33:33So I'm excited for Jalen Hawkins this season.
33:36Let's talk kickers.
33:37Hold on.
33:38Hold on.
33:39Hold on.

38:00I don't know if Joe said that just because I haven't seen him in a month.
38:01You've not been through his entire display.
38:02He's kind of anignon.
38:03Yeah, we've struggled.
38:04That's part of his ritual attempts.
38:05But we'll see, starting on Thursday night.
38:06Look, I'm not saying he's ahead of Drake May.
38:07He has looked good, though.
38:08He's
38:09I'm gonna actually say, we didn't really touch on him
38:10He made some good throws today.
38:11Yeah, like, in the red zone and stuff, he needs to get some touch.
38:14Like yesterday, I asked him what he was trying to
38:15welcome the Joe Milton experience
38:17I wanted to see if he's aware of it and would, like, say anything.
38:20I feel like it's one of those things
38:21he's not going to acknowledge.
38:22Like with Drake, everyone kept asking about his footwork,
38:24and he just got to a point where you could tell he was like,
38:26gee, shut up with my footwork.
38:28I don't know if Joe was just sick of talking about it,
38:30but I mean, there were some incompletions that
38:32could have been completions, I think,
38:34if he had taken, like, several RPMs off the ball.
38:36So he has looked good, but just, like,
38:38enough with the fireballs to guys
38:40who are, like, 10 yards away.
38:42That's just me.
38:43I wanted to give him his flowers.
38:44Like, he's looked good, but it's just too many heaters.
38:47Let's do this before we wrap it up real quick,
38:49because we're through nine practices.
38:51We have a good sample size.
38:52Whatever your expectations were, and we all
38:55came in with different expectations
38:56for all four quarterbacks.
38:58Jacoby Brissette, over or under expectations, Brian?
39:02Exceeded, over.
39:03Exceeded, over.
39:03Taylor?
39:04Can I just say flat?
39:05You can say flat.
39:06We acknowledge you had high expectations.
39:08Drake May, over, under, or flat?
39:11Flat.
39:12Flat.
39:13I would say over, just recently, though, I would say.
39:16Because I was starting to kind of worry about it.
39:18Yeah, but now that he's growing,
39:19that's what I wanted to see.
39:20I knew it wouldn't be perfect.
39:21But yeah, I'd say exceeding, because he
39:22started to scare me.
39:23I'm going to say under.
39:24I think there's context to that, that I'm not,
39:28he's just under my expectations.
39:30I understand why it's happened, and I'm not
39:32worried about him long term.
39:33But we'll call a spade a spade.
39:35Through nine practices, he's not exactly
39:36where I thought he would be at this point.
39:37Not jarring, but a little bit.
39:39If I were going on day one, I would also say under, too.
39:41So I get that.
39:41Bailey Zappi, over, under, level?
39:47Usage can factor into this.
39:49If he's just repping us, I'd say level, honestly.
39:51I would say flat.
39:52He's just kind of been Bailey Zappi, right?
39:55So flat.
39:56He's had one play that's caught my attention.
39:57It was yesterday.
39:58He stepped up a couple of hitches in Nick Cajon.
40:00Which you kind of saw last year, right?
40:01More of that improviser ability.
40:03But yeah, he's just kind of been Bailey Zappi.
40:05I would say kind of flat, especially the way
40:06his reps started to drop off in the spring.
40:08Joe Milton, over, under, flat?
40:10A little over, just because I thought
40:12that he was going to make some rookie mistakes,
40:14throw into some bad windows.
40:15It feels like he's consistently finding the right guy, which
40:18he's getting a lot of red zone opportunities.
40:20So kind of like Drake May, he's doing better
40:22than I would anticipate for a young guy.
40:24But it's also, I say slightly, because again, you
40:28don't have to kill the guy every time.
40:30We can be clear, the bar, we're setting our bars for where
40:33we thought these guys would be.
40:35The bar for Drake May and the bar for Joe Milton
40:37are not the same.
40:37Of course, of course.
40:38So I'll go over for Joe Milton.
40:40But if his bar was where Drake May's was, I would say under.
40:44I'll say this with Joe Milton.
40:45I've liked the decision making.
40:46The decision making has been better than I thought.
40:48But like you said, he is still spraying it a little bit.
40:50And he does need some touch.
40:51Brian, over, under, flat Joe Milton?
40:53I'd probably go over.
40:55I'll go with the guys.
40:56Any other players you think it might be fun to do that for?
40:59I'm trying to think of who's been the most up and down
41:01contentious player in camp.
41:02It's probably been Taekwon.
41:03But Taekwon, I would say the rookie.
41:05I feel like it's been Drake May, but.
41:07Yeah, no, you're right, Drake May.
41:08All right, offensive line as a group.
41:11Over, under, flat, Taylor?
41:13Over, but they're also starting to take steps back.
41:16But the fact that they were competitive,
41:17and I think they still have been competitive for the most part.
41:19For nine days in a row.
41:20So I'd say after that second padded practice, where
41:22we had the same tackles for four straight sessions,
41:26it seemed like they were really building some momentum.
41:28Like, I was over.
41:30I was really kind of gaining some confidence in that group.
41:33And then we saw, like, Vardarian Lowe goes in.
41:36And now Chooks, Korafor, and Calvin Anderson are hurt.
41:38So as you said, like, kind of losing it a little bit.
41:41But I still think it's been relatively solid.
41:43I'm with Brian.
41:44I'll say flat.
41:45I don't think they could come in under where
41:47my expectations were.
41:48I was really worried about this offensive line.
41:50But here we, at one point it was over, like you said.
41:52But nine practices in, it still feels like it's
41:55all kind of up in the air.
41:56I don't love to see that.
41:57So I'm going to say flat.
41:58This one's just for Brian.
41:59Chad Ryland, over, under, flat.
42:01Over.
42:02All right, fair enough.
42:02What about their receiving core, though?
42:04I think that's a pretty interesting one.
42:05Because expectations were very, like, they're 3-2.
42:08It's interesting, though.
42:10Receivers, I'll say over.
42:12Because if you look at it, there's
42:14been positives for just about everybody.
42:16Everybody, like, notable.
42:17The one guy there hasn't been.
42:18I didn't have a ton of expectations
42:19for him coming in anyway.
42:21So I'll say over for the receivers.
42:23Yeah, I would go over.
42:24I mean, you're seeing some encouraging flashes
42:26from the rookie receivers.
42:28Even a guy like KJ Osborne, like, I was just kind of like,
42:31OK, like, he's a sturdy veteran in the room.
42:33Is he going to give you much on the field?
42:35Great day today.
42:36And then, you know, Pop coming back.
42:37We talked about him on the top.
42:38But, like, he's just been awesome.
42:40So yeah, I would go over.
42:41It's been pretty encouraging from that group.
42:43So first of all, let's remember to do this
42:45as a segment at the end of camp.
42:46Because it's a really good idea.
42:47But I do want to throw one more in before we wrap it up.
42:50Did you say receivers?
42:51You said receivers.
42:52You kind of started us off on that.
42:53I want to make sure we're not covering up for anything
42:56or anything like that.
42:58Cornerbacks over under flat.
43:00Under.
43:01Under.
43:01Yeah.
43:02Under.
43:02That's probably the biggest.
43:03Because the receivers have been doing pretty well.
43:04That's probably the biggest under.
43:05Well, you know how much chicken and the egg, right?
43:08Are the receivers overperforming?
43:09What we thought.
43:09Are the corners underperforming?
43:11Usually, it's somewhere in the middle.
43:12But we'll see.
43:13On Thursday, we'll get a much better idea
43:15with the first preseason game.
43:16Two more practices before that.
43:17But really, this all kind of bundles together
43:19into a game week.
43:19So final question before we get out of here, guys.
43:22We'll put Drake May to the side.
43:23Obviously, he's the biggest story of this camp.
43:27We're all watching him.
43:28Besides Drake May, what is the biggest
43:29thing you're tracking going into and through
43:31that first preseason game?
43:32Taylor.
43:32I'll say Caden Wallace.
43:33Because I think if he can be at least a functional starter
43:37for your offense, that's huge.
43:38So I'm going to be watching him, especially now
43:40that we actually get film and we can review things.
43:42I'll be watching him very closely.
43:43Ryan.
43:44Yeah, I mean, I was going to say the offensive line.
43:45Just who is out there?
43:46Like, who's the starting five out there?
43:49But I mean, we just talked about the cornerbacks.
43:51Like, is one of those young guys going
43:53to start maybe gaining some ground now
43:54that we get into actual football and they can tackle?
43:58So yeah, seeing if one of those guys,
44:00if they get a sturdy third option behind Christian
44:02Gonzalez and Jonathan Jones.
44:04So you guys hit on the big ones, offensive line, corners.
44:07I'm going to give you a kind of sneaky big one.
44:08Kicker.
44:09Besides that, it's not sneaky.
44:10Edge.
44:11Guys on the edge.
44:12Two main guys I'll point out.
44:13One, Keone White.
44:15I've been very high on his year two jump.
44:17We haven't talked about him as much the last couple of days.
44:19But remember, he was like the star of the preseason
44:22last year.
44:22He was the breakout rookie of the preseason last year.
44:25So looking forward to seeing what he can do in live action.
44:28And O'Shane Zemenez.
44:30Feels like a guy that might play a bigger role, Matthew Judon
44:32Arnault.
44:33Let's see what he does in some game action.
44:35And we'll have you covered up to and through the first
44:38preseason game for CLNS.
44:39Make sure you subscribe to that Patriots Press Pass YouTube

45:04with the Patriots.
