00:45I will have one eye devoted to Twitter because we are recording this on Tuesday afternoon
00:52just before 1230 before Gregg gets to go have some fun for a couple of hours with
00:57Felger and Maz.
00:58So if something breaks, I'll be all over it, but let's start here, Gregg.
01:03Jordan Schultz is reporting that teams are interested in KJ Osborne, multiple teams.
01:10Your guy, Mike Giardi with Boston Sports Journal says that the LA Chargers is one of those
01:16teams.
01:17Could you see a move happen?
01:18What should we expect with Osborne as far as a return?
01:21Do you think he's gone and what could they get back?
01:23Yeah, I think he's gone.
01:26If I had to wager on the Patriot, most likely to be on the way out, it would be KJ Osborne
01:32and not much, somewhere around a sixth or seventh.
01:39Maybe they can get a conditional, but I think at this point, they're just ready to give
01:44him away and move on and go on with the youth movement.
01:47A trade that was made earlier today had to do with Dallas.
01:51They dealt a fourth round pick to Carolina for Jonathan Mingo and a seventh round pick.
01:56Now, a couple of interesting things I want to get to about this trade, but first and
01:59foremost, I saw you tweet this today, you know, Mike Lombardi had mentioned the Cowboys
02:04and Tyquan Thornton.
02:06So did the Patriots just lose out on an opportunity to deal Thornton out of town?
02:11Well, I mean, it depends on how you view it.
02:15I mean, I still think internally, I still think they feel that Tyquan has some value
02:24and some upside.
02:25And you know, obviously they made him a second round pick just, you know, two years ago.
02:31And some of the people that made that selection or were involved in it, like Ellie Wolfe and
02:35Matt Groh and Cam Williams, they're all still there.
02:40And you don't really, you know, give up on a guy.
02:46What year is he in?
02:47Is it three or two?
02:48I think it's two.
02:50Or is it three?
02:51I'll look it up.
02:52Yeah.
02:53I don't know.
02:54But anyway, I think that's the situation.
02:56So you said the compensation was a fourth?
03:00Yes.
03:02Yeah, that's, that's interesting.
03:08You would think that I think it just came down to the Patriots probably drove a harder
03:14bargain that they, they wanted a higher pick for a second round pick.
03:20And yeah, that's probably the way it came out.
03:23By the way, Mingo was the 39th pick in the 2023 draft.
03:27So this is year two for him with the Panthers.
03:30And let's not forget, you could look at that and say, man, is that a massive overpay for
03:34a guy who hasn't done much in his career?
03:36He had a brutal, if you look at analytics, he had a brutal rookie season a year ago,
03:42but he was playing with Bryce Young.
03:45That entire operation in Carolina was brutal.
03:48And let's not forget, he's only in his second year.
03:51So contract matters.
03:52If you're trying to deal a guy who's a rental versus a guy who still has contract term that
03:57changes some things.
03:59Now the Patriots did make a move, Greg, today, according to Mike Reese, they have signed
04:04practice squad player, offensive lineman Tyrese Robinson, and he's a, he's a right
04:10guard.
04:11He's played some right guard.
04:12He's played some right tackle.
04:13He's been on practice squads the last couple of years.
04:15I bring that up not to break down Tyrese Robinson, but I bring it up because the Patriots signed
04:21somebody off the practice squad, which means somebody on their 53 has to go.
04:26Somebody that's on the roster right now has to go, which makes me wonder, do they already
04:30have a trade in the pipeline?
04:32And that's how they open up the spot for Tyrese Robinson.
04:35Probably.
04:36I, I would assume that, um, that they, I'm sorry, I'm just looking at the depth.
04:41I just want to call up the depth chart just to see like, so, um, well, I mean, you have
04:45got, well, they got lit look like Tish's Smith, uh, off a green base practice squad, um, trying
04:55to see who else, who would be, yeah, I, I would.
05:00It's going to be something along the lines of they, they, they know they're dealing somebody
05:05at some point.
05:06And so, um, that's the way it'll go down.
05:09If they don't deal Osborne, if they don't deal Thornton, do they release one of those
05:13guys that just cut their losses?
05:15Uh, yeah.
05:17And it would probably be K KJ Osborne.
05:19I think that, um, yeah, it just hasn't worked out.
05:23Um, you know, there, there's a lot of reasons for that and there's a lot of reasons for,
05:29you know, I see a lot of chatter on Twitter about look where Jalen Polk ranks in terms
05:33of this and that, and like, we'll get into it more when we talk about the state of this
05:39offense and Alex van Pelt, um, you know, but yeah, I, I have a feeling that they, that
05:45they would just move on from KJ Osborne.
05:47All right, let's get into the Titans game and let's start with the Patriots defense
05:51against that Titans offense.
05:53Then we'll move to Alex van Pelt and Drake may and the Pats offense.
05:57Uh, but the defense, what did you see on, on Sunday?
06:01Was it a step back for DeMarcus Covington and company?
06:04Um, yeah, I, yes, but I want, I want to start with this and we might as well group in the
06:12offense, um, into this cause it's, it's all related.
06:16Um, you know, my big takeaway from this game was if Gerard Mayo or whoever decides to move
06:24on from Alex van Pelt after the season, this is one of those games where.
06:29His shortcoming sort of stuck out like a sore thumb, not only in terms of what the Patriots
06:34weren't able to do on offense, but also the contrast to what the Titans were doing.
06:40And let's, let's point out that, you know, the Titans have better personnel.
06:45They have more talent.
06:46Yes.
06:47They had Mason Rudolph at quarterback.
06:48I understand that.
06:49Right.
06:50They lost their center Lloyd Cushenberry.
06:51They are, they were already without their right guard, um, you know, going into this
06:56game, but they do have, you know, top 10 picks at left tackle and left guard, the right guards,
07:03right tackles garbage.
07:04And they sort of rotated those guys.
07:07But I think when I, when I watched the tape of this game, um, you know, a lot, some of
07:15it was self-inflicted stuff.
07:17It went back to sort of, you know, guys being out of position, not getting off blocks, guys
07:22going up the field, exposing run gaps and stuff like that.
07:26But I do think a lot of it had to do with Brian Callahan scheme.
07:30I mean, there was a, there was a lot of motion, a lot of bells and whistles, a lot of, uh,
07:35you know, different alignments.
07:37And I think it just, it threw the Patriots for a loop.
07:40I mean, Nick, again, I, I look at this game as just another example of the Patriots just
07:48being out coach in two phases.
07:50I mean, the Titans special teams are a freaking disaster and Brian can't, the Callahan can't
07:56coach his way out of a paper bag as far as a head coach.
07:59I mean, but at least he has the built-in excuse of it's his offense.
08:03He's calling the plays.
08:05He's a little distracted, you know, with all that stuff.
08:10You know, Gerard Mayo does not have that excuse.
08:12Gerard Mayo doesn't do anything.
08:14You know, he has coordinators and, and I mean, the, the, the Titans decision to kick in the
08:20middle of the field line drives twice to Marcus Jones were just egregious.
08:25And you know, if the, if the Titans played well, if they managed the game somewhat, well,
08:31they win this game going away.
08:33It's not even close at the end.
08:35They largely dominated this game from start to finish.
08:38You had the, the, the ridiculous goal line situation where they get to what was a second
08:45and three and they throw twice and they get picked off instead of, you know, just being
08:49conservative and just saying like, look at this other team, they can't do anything.
08:52Let's go up 10 points, see how they do down two scores.
08:57You know, and then there was the fumbled snap, you know, in overtime when they were about
09:01to walk in for a touchdown and you know, there were drops from Calvin Ridley and there
09:06were all sorts of issues and their special team issues, but the, the Titans should have
09:11won this game going away.
09:13And the only reason that it was closer is because of their own ineptitude.
09:16But back to the Patriots defense, you know, say what you want about Brian Callahan.
09:21He's got a really good scheme and I, it, to me, it didn't look like the Patriots were
09:26all that prepared for it.
09:29They were, they, they were caught sort of a half a step late all the time.
09:34Some of their coverages were bad.
09:37You know, to me, it was just more of the same that we've seen out of this defensive season.
09:41All right, before we get to a Gerard Mayo and the Patriots offense, let's have Greg
09:45tell you about prize picks.

10:25Prize picks run your game.
10:27All right, Gerard Mayo.
10:34I'm frustrated, Greg.
10:37I'm trying to be patient and fair and understand there's a learning curve, but two things on
10:45Sunday drove me mother loving crazy.
10:50Let's start with the idea before the game that you had an offensive line that was finally
10:56finding some continuity, was finally playing better, at least in pass protection.
11:03You were going against a team in Tennessee that had Jeffrey Simmons as their best defensive
11:10player.
11:11The last time I checked, you can correct me on this, but Jeffrey Simmons is an interior
11:15defensive lineman.
11:18The Patriots decide in their great wisdom, Greg, before this game to push Michael Wenu
11:25back out to right tackle.
11:28What in the bleep was that about?
11:33This isn't even a hindsight second guess type of thing.
11:38When I heard what they were doing in warmups, I was like, I do not agree with this.
11:46This goes along with Alex Van Pelt, and it also goes along with Gerard Mayo because he
11:50is the head coach.
11:52He dictates everything, or should.
12:00This is the way most teams operate.
12:02This is the way Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels would have operated.
12:05How many times have we seen the Patriots over the years go up against a team with one really
12:11good guy up front, especially on the interior?
12:15That makes it even easier.
12:16Like J.J. Watt.
12:18How many times did the Patriots play J.J. Watt, and he never did squat?
12:21Now, you could say the Patriots had better personnel and stuff like that.
12:25Oh, okay.
12:26I mean, there were also times that the Patriots went out there and had guys like Brian Stork
12:33and Ryan Windell and Dan Conley and Trey Jackson and all sorts of guys going through injuries
12:41and things like that.
12:42I don't have to say like Wendy and Conley weren't good players.
12:45They were, but not hugely talented players and what have you, but I can guarantee you
12:53if Bill Belichick was here and they were game planning for this, he would have told Josh,
12:58we are not letting number 98 do anything.
13:02Everything we do on offense revolves around eliminating him.
13:07Make the other guys make plays.
13:09That's fine.
13:10But we are not letting him beat us.
13:12And for them to make the decision to insert Leighton Robinson, who I like, okay, and he
13:17played really well early, then he started to slump, then he got hurt.
13:22He hasn't played a whole lot.
13:24The decision to say, I wish I was a fly on the wall for that meeting, if they even add
13:31one, where they're like, hmm, should we move the guy who we're paying $19 million to and
13:39an offensive line where we're whining about how we haven't had continuity all year and
13:44finally get a chance to roll out the same offensive line three times.
13:47And we know what we have.
13:48We know what we don't have.
13:49We got to help the edges, you know, what have you, but you know, should we go with the rookie
13:55against Jeffrey Simmons or the $19 million guy?
14:01And not only that, Nick, like I can, like, okay, let's just say they had their reasons
14:07for doing that.
14:08Okay.
14:09Which I don't agree with.
14:10Well, let's, let's just say they did to pair that with not having a plan against Jeffrey
14:15Simmons.
14:16I mean, I can't tell you how many times in the first half it was one-on-one Leighton
14:20Robinson, one-on-one they're running one-on-one, no double team on Jeffrey Simmons, no running
14:26away, no wham, no, no nothing.
14:29It was just, it was, it was mind boggling.
14:35It was mind numbing.
14:37And to me, it just led me to, to think like, you know, what the hell is Alex Van Pelt doing?
14:44And what the hell is Gerard Mayo allowing him to do?
14:47I mean, this, that decision changing the personnel on the offensive line and then not having
14:54a plan for Jeffrey Simmons to me, doom this game from the Patriots for the start, egregious,
15:01egregious, ridiculous decision makes absolutely no sense.
15:06You are correct in saying this is not hindsight 2020.
15:10Everybody in real time wondered what the hell was going on.
15:12It made no sense specifically with this matchup.
15:16It goes into the long line of defensive playmakers that Alex Van Pelt goes into on Sunday and
15:21says to himself, we don't really have to pay extra attention to that guy.
15:25They did it with Nick Bosa, Bosa killed him.
15:28They did it with Trey Hendrickson.
15:29Hendrickson was somewhat of a problem.
15:31They did it with Will Anderson against Houston in Houston.
15:35And Will Anderson was a big time problem.
15:37It's part of the reason why the strip sack happened and for Darian Lowe got hurt.
15:40And then you go into this game and you don't pay attention to Jeffrey Simmons.
15:45I'm not asking for a lot.
15:47This is basic football stuff.
15:50This is most people who watch the game.
15:53Most people who pay attention to other teams would tell you that Jeffrey Simmons is a killer.
15:58The dude is a certified freaking monster.
16:02And I'm talking about him on my podcast on Friday, previewing the game and saying Jeffrey
16:08Simmons is a problem.
16:10He's like one of the best run stuffers in football.
16:12He's one of the best pass rushers from the interior in football.
16:16You got to make sure you got this thing figured out.
16:17Michael Wenu, Ben Brown have to do a good job and to think that you're putting Leighton
16:21Robinson out there.
16:22But that's not all Greg, because if you thought that decision was bad, I don't know if the
16:28decision was worse, but let's get to overtime and Drake Mays talking to the media after
16:34the game.
16:35And he mentions that he threw into the wind and everybody listening to that said, wait
16:39a minute, they lost the coin toss.
16:45If you lost the coin toss, you get to choose which direction you want to go, which direction
16:50you want to kick into.
16:53And if Drake May was right in his assessment, that means the Patriots chose in overtime
16:58to drive into the wind and Gerard Mayo was asked.
17:05And I thought he made it even worse when his answer, Greg, was so stunningly ridiculous.
17:13He said.
17:15That the wind changed, that was his answer as to why they played into the wind in overtime.
17:22And he said the wind changed from the beginning of the game to overtime to the end of the
17:27game.
17:29And I'm not sure, honestly, I'm not sure if the Patriots coaching staff understands, Greg,
17:35that weather changes throughout the day.
17:40I don't know.
17:41Take it over before I swear and lose my mind.
17:43Well, I mean, and then you can, we could sort of group this into, you know, also the two
17:48point discussion, which I don't have a problem either way, whatever.
17:53I wasn't thinking about the two point conversion because the Patriots were basically in a scramble
17:57drill with no timeouts and Drake May had just run around for 12 seconds and pulled a play
18:01out of his rear end to get you in position to go to overtime, you know, but for Gerard
18:09Mayo not to have an answer on why he didn't do it, not only after the game, but then the
18:16day after the game, like, you know, we knew with Bill Belichick, we knew what we would
18:22get as far as an answer.
18:23But Gerard Mayo is the guy who's preached transparency and, you know, going to share
18:27information and all that stuff.
18:29And then he's just like, I don't want to get into it.
18:33You know, why don't you want to get into it?
18:35Like what's, you're the head coach.
18:38You made the decision.
18:40Like you have to have a reason why you made your decision.
18:42Just state your reason.
18:46But then, you know, the wind thing, I mean, he kicked into the wind, the 56 yard field
18:50goal from all accounts was into the wind.
18:54I think going, I don't know if it was the same direction or not, but he kicks a 56 yarder
19:02on the, in the first quarter and that doesn't work out.
19:06And then he gets the wind wrong in overtime.
19:10I mean, it's just like, Nick, I really am.
19:15I'm sick of talking about the coaching.
19:16I really would rather not.
19:20But I mean, I have to, it's right there week after week after week.
19:25It's it's right there for all to see.
19:28And it's just like, you know, they're not, I feel bad for the players because they're
19:32just not being put in a position to succeed.
19:39And that was just another example on Sunday.
19:41Yeah.
19:42The clock management at the end of the half.
19:44How many times have we seen this?
19:46How, how many times?
19:50And Gerard Mayo has said, I'm not a repeat offender.
19:53You keep making the same mistakes.
19:56They come out and they're aggressive at the end of the half.
19:59They start throwing the football.
20:00They're completing passes.
20:02They're moving the football down the field.
20:03Now, I did not have a problem with the second and one run.
20:07Uh, I thought it was actually a pretty good call given the situation and the fact that
20:10the Patriots had some timeouts.
20:12So I don't mind the second and one run, but then third and one, everybody in the stadium
20:19knows you're going to run the football.
20:21You haven't been able to run the football all first half long.
20:25You run into a brick wall and to make matters worse, you didn't call a timeout after the
20:30second downplay when you ran, which would have saved you time.
20:34So in case, if you got the first down on third and one, you would have had more time
20:38to work with.
20:39I mean, this is just, I mean, this is stuff that I know when I play Madden for the love
20:45of God.
20:46I mean, this, this ain't tough and I don't know, I don't know, but let's continue with
20:56AVP because I've heard this conversation.
20:59I haven't been able to talk about this on my pod.
21:01I haven't talked about it with you.
21:03So van Pelt comes out and says, we're not going to call designed runs for Drake man.
21:08And some people in the media love the quote.
21:11Other people in the media hated the quote.
21:13I hated the quote.
21:14And I'll tell you a couple of reasons why.
21:17Number one, for the people who are like, Oh, if you call designed runs, you're going to
21:22put Drake may in the crosshairs.
21:25What's more dangerous.
21:27Drake may scrambling around when the chaos is happening or a designed run where he knows
21:33where the hell he's going, has blockers in front of him and has full control of the situation.
21:38Number two, Greg, I don't know if I have a quarterback who, one of his most lethal weapons
21:44as we've seen is his legs.
21:47If I'm the offensive coordinator, I might take advantage of that to drive the defense
21:52crazy.
21:53And third, before I kick it to you is, Hey, Alex, your run game sucks.
21:59So maybe you want to sprinkle in some different things with the quarterback to maybe get your
22:03run game going, Greg.
22:05Yeah.
22:07And this is all related to, you know, going back to my main takeaway is like, I think,
22:12you know, Alex van pelvis getting more and more exposed by the week.
22:16I think actually Drake may playing and, you know, I, I brought this up in my column after
22:21the game where I sort of had rambling thoughts about like, you know, because I, it, it doesn't
22:27compute for me, Nick.
22:28And I don't know if it does for you that look, Drake may is making more plays.
22:33Okay.
22:34They're getting bigger plays.
22:36They're getting better overall play out of the quarterback position with Drake may yet
22:40the results are worse.
22:42They just are.
22:43I mean, Jacoby Brissett won them two games and had them on the verge of two victories.
22:49Drake maze, Owen three, as far as, you know, games that he finished and look, the Texans
22:55game was the Texans game, you know, what have you, but, you know, the Jaguars were
22:59the 10, nothing lead that they lose going away.
23:04And then, you know, the Tennessee Titans, they, they lose to, you know, Mason Rudolph,
23:08which was, you know, very similar to the dolphins game.
23:11Of course, I think all of it, you know, goes back to coaching, but back to Alex van Pelt
23:16when I heard that quote and I watch what transpires on the field and I watch other teams like
23:24Washington with Jaden Daniels and cliff Kingsbury how they incorporate what Jaden Daniels does
23:31and the impact that has on the rest of the offense.
23:34Alex van Pelt looks like a caveman Neanderthal, you know, clinging to what he believes in
23:42where, you know, how designed runs, like I've seen, you know, quarterbacks get hurt.
23:46Like what game are you watching your quarterbacks running all over tarnation.
23:51His helmet's almost flying off.
23:53He's was quote unquote concussed, even though I don't think he was really, you know, last
23:58game.
23:59And first of all, you're declaring to every other team, like, Oh, well, this guy really
24:06runs, but we don't need to worry about him in the run game.
24:08I mean, that's just the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
24:12At least if you're not going to do it, at least talk it up.
24:14So they're like, Oh, now we got to prepare what, what people, and I'm sure we have a
24:19lot of smart listeners to this podcast.
24:23You have no idea when you have an athletic quarterback and you incorporate him into the
24:28run game and do different things schematically, just the, you know, simple RPOs, the amount
24:34of space that opens up in both the run and the, if you have to account for the quarterback,
24:39it adds an extra gap to the run defense.
24:41So somebody has to be in that gap to account for it.
24:45Let alone if, if the quarterback is a threat with his legs and they're doing RPOs and things
24:51like that, you have to play more conservative on defense because if you're in man to man,
24:56you know, you're going to expose gas.
24:58And it also, since everybody complains about how the Patriots receiver sock and they're
25:03not open, I contend to you, Alex van Pelt scheme sucks and can't get anybody open.
25:08But if you have a running quarterback, somebody who, you know, has the fake and the defense
25:14has to hold, and then all of a sudden, guess what?
25:16All this space opens up for your receipt while you're a seat while, while they're waiting
25:20for the ball to figure out whether it's a run or a pass, your receivers already going
25:24down the field and getting open.
25:26And it makes reads simpler for the quarterback.
25:29It makes space easier to come to for the receivers.
25:33And all of this stuff is being laid left on the wayside by Alex van Pelt.
25:37Why I don't want to hear any of this injury bullcrap.
25:42First of all, I don't even know what quarterbacks he's talking about that he's been involved
25:45in.
25:45They have like, you know, designed runs.
25:47I don't think they did that with Aaron Rogers very much in green Bay, but you know, it's,
25:55it's about, he, he's not capable of these things.
25:58He's not capable of motion.
25:59He's not capable of all these different creative things that we see that we just saw from the
26:04Titans.
26:04Brian Callahan had shit going on all over the place and it contributed to the Patriots
26:10not being able to get off the field on defense.
26:12Yet you look at the Patriots and it's like Drake Mays out there with having to throw
26:17rocks with what he has as far as scheme.
26:20You know, it's not just personnel, it's also scheme and coaching.
26:23And the Patriots are just woefully unarmed, underarmed compared to what they're doing,
26:29what they're going up against every Sunday.
26:31It's like the last couple of weeks van Pelt looked like he had improved in a couple of
26:36areas.
26:37And then on Sunday just falls back to what we saw, you know, three weeks ago.
26:41It's just like, there's no steady improvement.
26:45There's no steady improvement on either side of the football.
26:48There's no steady improvement from your head coach as far as learning from the mistakes
26:52that he has made.
26:53It's the same stuff, man.
26:55It's, I'll use it over again.
26:56It's one of my favorites.
26:58It's Bill Murray, Groundhog's Day.
27:00We're waking up, we're rolling over, we're slapping the freaking alarm clock as we hear
27:04Sonny and Cher.
27:05I got you, babe.
27:06That's what's happening.
27:08Every Sunday I'm rolling over, I'm slamming my alarm clock as Sonny and Cher are belting
27:14out a tune to me.
27:15And I'm getting ready to watch coaches that are completely unprepared.
27:18And people want me to assess Elliott Wolfe.
27:22I'm not telling you Elliott Wolfe did a great job.
27:25Certainly this roster could be more talented, but I do have to look at things like Alex
27:30van Pelt.
27:32And what if you had somebody who was better that got Jalen Polk going early in the year
27:36and his confidence skyrocketed.
27:38And now all of a sudden you get a different Jalen Polk.
27:40Now maybe Jalen Polk just fell off a cliff and he stinks and he's never going to be good
27:44and he's a bust.
27:46But to me, it's so much more difficult to evaluate some of these players, especially
27:51the young guys when we have so many coaching questions going on.
27:55I don't know how you do it.
27:57I don't know how you assess this offense fairly when you've got an offensive coordinator who
28:04seems to be lost.
28:05And I'm telling you, like my patience is almost done with him.
28:10And I don't know when you make the move to McAdoo, but it feels like to me it should
28:14be very, very close to happening.
28:16And I know Luke gets, he got popped this week by the Raiders.
28:21Shane Waldron's in trouble in Chicago as they get ready to play against the Patriots this
28:25weekend.
28:26But it's getting close.
28:29It's getting close.
28:29All right, before we get to Drake May and how he played, let Greg tell you all about
28:36our friends from game time.
28:38It's NBA season.
28:40The Celtics are rolling.
28:42You got to be there in person to experience it.
28:45And if you want to be there, you got to go check out game time.

28:59so you don't waste time going through all this and scrolling and all this.
29:03No, they give you the best deals.
29:04And then you just click on it and you go.
29:07I also love the all in pricing toggling.
29:09This feature shows the total up front with no surprise fees at checkout.

29:31What time is it?
29:32Game time.
29:33Before we get to May's performance.
29:36Yeah.
29:36Do you think that Van Pelt has actually developed May as much as some think?
29:41Or do you think that's being a little bit overrated?
29:45I'm glad you went here, Nick, because I was about to go here.
29:50You know, and I'm sure you saw and I'm sure it's going to make some people upset.
29:55But I want to I want to present to you a few different stats.
30:00Since taking over in week six, Drake May leads the league in turnover worthy play percentage
30:05at 5.7%.
30:08And of course, any second in turnover worthy plays to Baker Mayfield by one.
30:12Of course, he only played 11 snaps against the Jets.
30:15It probably would be worse if he played.
30:18Conversely, Jacoby Brissett was 11th at 3.5%.
30:22What I also want to point out is Josh Allen, who we have used that comp several times.
30:28I do think that Drake May is similar to Josh Allen in terms of, you know, inexperienced
30:33play style.
30:34Different.
30:35Josh is a freaking oak tree.
30:37And Drake May is sort of like Josh, Josh Allen Jr., a little smaller, but the same style
30:43of play.
30:45Josh Allen was second in the league after his first four starts at 6.7% turnover worthy
30:52plays.
30:53Of course, Allen didn't start started week two and didn't have the quote unquote development
30:58May did when when discussing Alex Van Pelt and his value and about this coaching staff.
31:05And of course, we know that there are a lot of people in let's just say in the media around
31:11here who, you know, either they want to be have extreme patience with Mayo or, you know,
31:17have some affinity for Mayo, which I understand.
31:20One of the one of the crutches that they're using is look at the plan that they had for
31:27Drake May.
31:28Look at what they did.
31:29They obviously and that's the most important thing for this franchise and look at what
31:32they've done.
31:33Look at the way that he's playing.
31:35And that's just an example of they made the right decision.
31:40You know, I'm sorry.
31:42I disagree.
31:42And this might some of this flies in the face of what I believed about Drake May.
31:47And again, when discussing draft prospects, especially quarterback prospects, like there's
31:53a lot of crap that we don't know that is vital to knowing like where a player is and what
31:59he's going to do as far as interviews and being on the board and video like we have
32:04none of that stuff.
32:05OK, all we see is what we see on film with Drake May.
32:09And yes, my opinion was it would be best for him to sit for most of his rookie season
32:18to get his footwork down his mechanics, sort of the Patrick Mahomes plan and set him up
32:24for year two.
32:25So we had a really good base.
32:28That's what I believed, you know.
32:32However, after watching Drake May this this this entire time from OTAs to now into the
32:38season, there's no question that at a certain point in training camp, Drake May was struggling.
32:44He was struggling processing and all that stuff.
32:47And that lent itself to me to be like, all right, well, I assess this right.
32:54This guy's this guy's a way off.
32:56At some point in time that changed.
32:58OK, right around after the joint practice with the Eagles, where they all got their
33:01asses whooped, he came out in the Eagles game and he played really well.
33:07And then that continued after that.
33:09And we heard from Mayo saying, you know, basically from that point on, Drake May outperforms
33:14Jacoby Brissett.
33:15You know, when you're talking about the starting quarterback position, right?
33:19You know, so long story short, the Drake May that I see now on film physically, his footwork,
33:26his motion, how he takes off.
33:29He did this in practices, too.
33:31I don't see a different quarterback.
33:33OK, now I also can't measure where he was as far as deciphering coverages and where
33:39to go with the ball and knowing, you know, and I'm sure Alex Van Pelt has even said like,
33:43oh, yeah, you know, he's he he's he's greatly improved.
33:47He wouldn't have done that week one.
33:49You know, we don't know that.
33:50What you have to keep in mind is that despite Drake May playing really well, he continued
33:55to get crap reps.
33:57He never got any first team reps during training camp and, you know, going into the season.
34:04You know, I maintain that if if they would have say after the Eagles preseason game,
34:10if they would have started splitting the snaps 50 50 with Jacoby Brissett at the very least
34:15as and if they ramped him up in terms of all right, well, now we got to get him ready quicker.
34:20We're not going on the slow plan anymore.
34:22We're going to ramp up his tutoring and covers, you know, all the coverage, just
34:28figuring out what coverage is, all that stuff.
34:32I think that I think that if Drake May, if they ramped up his progress, I think that
34:39he would be as good or better at this point starting week one than where he is now, because
34:45to me, Nick, it looks to me that this is a guy who learns by doing and the more he does
34:52it, the more he learns.
34:53He gets better every every week.
34:56And so I'm sorry.
34:59Correlation, you know, doesn't mean causation just because you're seeing Drake May being
35:04able to play right now doesn't mean he would have been able to play week one.
35:07We don't know that.
35:09And so for people to use that as a crutch to say, well, look at the job Mayo and Van
35:15Pelt have done with Drake May.
35:17I'm sorry.
35:18I just I reject that.
35:19I think that Drake May would be further ahead right now if they would have ramped up his
35:24progress.
35:26With all of that said, what were your thoughts on his performance against that defense on
35:32Sunday?
35:34You know, I look, I mean, he was he was really good.
35:37I mean, his ending grade wasn't great for me.
35:39I would say it was it was good.
35:41You know, I mean, he did have, you know, the three turnovers.
35:44I, you know, the first interception, he's feeling pressure, but he just can't throw
35:50the ball up like that.
35:53You know, the strip sack fumble.
35:57I think I put I put the whole thing on him on that play.
36:01If you remember, like Drake May's looking left, and that's where I think it was Harold
36:06Landry created the sack and the strip sack from behind when he's looking left, Landry
36:13starting to beat Vidarian low like he's he's got to be able to see that sense it, you know,
36:19and then he kind of took his time like you don't have four and a half seconds to to go
36:24and make plays in the NFL.
36:26And so, you know, I put that on him that resulted in the points.
36:30And then the last interception to me, and I know there's a lot of people on Twitter
36:35like Luke Kendrick Bourne fell down.
36:37First of all, we don't know that Kendrick Bourne was going to run the vertical route
36:40on that.
36:40And I didn't really see the safe.
36:42They were playing too deep safeties.
36:44I think the safety would have stayed on the hash marks to me, the biggest issue on that
36:49play, because I do think he had him and they had a similar route in the end zone where
36:57Drake May earlier, he got belted.
37:00And the thing was, is Drake made a great read that that safety, it was Ben Brown who came
37:05in or not Ben Brown.
37:06It was a guy with the last name of Brown came in for quandary digs and he completely blew
37:11a coverage and Drake saw it and he let go of it.
37:14The problem was he got drilled as he threw it.
37:16If he had a little bit more time, it's a touchdown.
37:18It was almost the same type of play.
37:20Drake with this time, Drake was, he was a little late and the ball was under thrown.
37:25If he throws it three quarters of a second earlier and on a line, it's probably a game
37:32winning touchdown.
37:33It was just a little late and it hung up and that was the issue.
37:39But I thought overall, I mean, look, he was 95% of the offense.
37:44I didn't have any problems with the scrambles.
37:46Normally I do the week before his touchdown run, Nick, and I don't know if we discussed
37:51this, his touchdown run.
37:53He actually had two guys open and I would have rather seen him throw that ball, but
37:58he made a play and whatever.
38:00So it's not a negative grade for me.
38:02But this was not a case of Drake May looking to run before he passed.
38:08He had to run in this game.
38:10He bailed the team out.
38:12And again, I just don't think he's getting any help from the offensive coordinator whatsoever
38:17with scheme.
38:18So not only is it talent around him, but it's also the caller and the play caller.
38:24But also let's point out that the offensive line was much better once they went back to
38:29their original line.
38:30The pressure rate dropped a ton and he was able to make a lot more plays.
38:37The offense in the first half was garbage and that included Drake May.
38:41But in the second half, they had much more opportunities because lo and behold, they
38:45could actually block.
38:46But overall, I thought Drake played really well.
38:49I mean, the play that he made at the end of the game was absurd and we all saw it and
38:55it looked like something Josh Allen would do.
38:57And look, it looks like they got the guy at quarterback.
39:01We'll see how it goes.
39:02You just wonder if they have anything else.
39:04Yeah, I mean, I thought Van Pelt tanked that game with the offensive line decision and
39:09Mayo that that's the very reason why they couldn't do anything offensively to start
39:14that game.
39:14So that's on the coaching staff.
39:16A few things here before we get to a big trade that was just made in the NFL and Greg's
39:20final thoughts on the Titans game.
39:22Check out Greg and Mike Giardi 50 bucks for the year at Boston Sports Journal.
39:26They do a great job covering the Patriots.
39:29Of course, John Corrales, our friend, is busy covering the Boston Celtics and Haggerty
39:34with the Bruins.
39:35So check them out.
39:3650 bucks for the year.
39:37Also download the prize picks app today.
39:39Use code CLNS 50 bucks instantly when you play five dollars and take the guesswork out
39:44of buying tickets with game time code CLNS for 20 bucks off your first purchase.
39:49All right, a big trade was made in the NFL just a few moments ago.
39:52Greg Marshawn Lattimore corner from New Orleans goes to Washington for a third round pick,
39:57at least a third round pick.
39:59Ian Rappaport said it was a third round pick and more.
40:02Others are just saying a third round pick.
40:04If you were the Patriots, because I know a lot of Patriots fans will say, why not go
40:08get would you?
40:09Would you have been in on that?
40:10You have two second rounders with the Judon trade.
40:13Would you have been in on Marshawn Lattimore?
40:17No, no, not a not a cornerback.
40:19They have three cornerbacks.
40:20They can go get more.
40:22I think the more pertinent question is, would you have dealt Jonathan Jones because there
40:27were rumors about people calling about Jonathan Jones?
40:30And I think now we know the commanders are one of those teams.
40:34Would you have done Jonathan Jones for a third round pick or a fourth round pick?
40:40I definitely would have done it for a third, fourth, probably not.
40:44And that's probably why the Patriots weren't in on this deal.
40:48All right.
40:48Three up, three down.
40:49Who'd you like?
40:50Who did you not like?
40:51Yeah, let's just go through it on defense.
40:54Guys, I liked the edge guys.
40:56I liked all of them.
40:57Keon White was awesome for total quarterback pressures.
41:00Three and a half stuffed runs.
41:02Dietrich Wise was good, even though he had a really bad run past the quarterback on the
41:07first drive that did not help things.
41:10Anthony Jennings was really good.
41:14Jelani Tavai was really good.
41:17I liked Marcus Jones, and that's it for the defense.
41:21Offense, Drake May.
41:24Ramondre Stevenson, even though he didn't have much production, his two touchdowns.
41:29Again, that goal line touchdown, it was almost...
41:32I went and whiffed again.
41:33And again, it was a circumstance where I'm like, I don't know how he got in.
41:37So, and plus his catch at the end of the game.
41:41Hunter Henry continues to probably be the best player as far as performance on offense
41:47this season.
41:51And on the offensive line, Michael Wenu, DeMontre Jacobs, and Ben Brown all did a good job.
41:58Oh, DeMontre Jacobs.
41:59Michael Wenu at right guard and DeMontre Jacobs at right tackle.
42:04That's interesting.
42:07Yeah.
42:10By the way, the trade for Lattimore was a Washington third, a Washington fourth,
42:18a Washington sixth, and Washington got Lattimore in a fifth.
42:27So a third, a fourth, and a sixth for Lattimore in a fifth.
42:31So Washington gave up a lot.
42:33So if you're a Patriots fan who wants Marshawn Lattimore, you gotta ask yourself the question,
42:37would you have traded a third, a fourth, and a sixth for him?
42:40I would not have done that.
42:42All right, he's Greg.
42:43I'm Nick.
42:44Later in the week, we'll have our reaction.
42:46See if the Patriots do anything on this trade deadline day.
42:49We get about three more hours left before the end of that deadline.
42:54And also, we'll preview the Chicago Bears.
42:56Caleb Williams, the first pick in the draft versus the third pick in the draft coming up on Sunday.
43:01Everybody be well until then.
