37:18There's been a collision with a cyclist and a car.
37:22The car is blocking the road, it's rolled over.
37:25Cop's a cyclist with a head injury.

37:34It's a report of an RTC with a cyclist.
37:37Five for one, I'll travel.
37:41So we've just had a report of a pedal cyclist RTC involving another vehicle.
37:47It's just outside one of the rural villages.
37:52No information about levels of injury, but anything involving a pedal cyclist is of concern,
37:57because of that potential of injury.
38:02Almost 100 cyclists a week are involved in serious collisions on our roads.
38:12And nearly half of all cyclist fatalities involve a car.
38:17Shockingly, they're almost twice as likely to be injured on rural roads than in urban areas.
38:25Fortunately for this cyclist, a passing ambulance was on hand.
38:29Ah, I've just been hit by an arty.
38:33And when this commuting cyclist in Sheffield came face to face with a motorist,
38:39they were thrown off their bike.
38:43Thankfully, only suffering minor injuries.
38:48There's been a collision with a cyclist and a car.

38:56On the A1 outside of Newcastle, Dave is racing to a crash between a car and a cyclist.
39:03I'm just pulled up at scene now. The cyclist has lost injuries.
39:07So there's an officer at scene.
39:10First priority for me is always making sure that if people are in need, a first aid that it's given.
39:17And the quicker we get there, the more likely we are to see what it looks like.
39:21If that's not a factor, then the quicker we're there, the better in relation to observing the scene.

41:05The pedal cyclist is in the back of the ambulance being treated at the minute.

41:13We've been speaking to the driver of the car.
41:17He's an 18-year-old young man.
41:19He doesn't require an ambulance.
41:21That could have been a serious head injury for him, never mind anything else.
41:24I was very lucky to have walked away.
41:27It's bad, but it could have been a lot worse.
41:29The driver involved in the collision has been taken home.
41:33While the cyclist receives medical attention, Dave speaks to witnesses.
41:38You saw the collision, sir, did you?
41:40What happened?
41:41Well, there was a cyclist in a white car.
41:44The white car was trying to overtake it, but then saw me coming over the brow.
41:47OK.
41:48And he's broke and veered in, but he veered up to such a degree
41:51that he's hit the sideburn, which has flipped the car.
41:54The roof of the car has hit the gentleman,
41:56and I thought it would actually, to be honest,
41:58it actually took him and swished him.
42:02His legs were mangled around the bike.
42:04I managed to put him in a recovery position,
42:06and then, thankfully, this gentleman, Ben, who said I'm a doctor,
42:09has come round.
42:11Did you give some treatment, did you?
42:13I just put a towel on his face because he was bleeding from his nose.
42:17He's confused, so he's probably got a head injury,
42:20and he's going home.

42:23and he's got some tenderness over the left side of his chest,
42:26and he was complaining a little bit of difficulty of breathing,
42:28so there might be some broken ribs, possibly a puncture of his lung
42:31or some bleeding into his chest, but I'm not sure about that.

42:37The bike rider, he's got some sort of head injury.
42:41It's not clear how bad that is just yet.
42:43Now that he's away at the hospital, effectively,
42:46we've got what we need from the scene, measurements, photographs,
42:49accounts, all those that are involved.
42:51It's a case of now clearing this up and getting the road open again, really.
43:20That car basically landed on top of the cyclist.
43:23That could have been a fatality, and thankfully it wasn't.
43:29There's a very fine line between no injury, serious injury and death,
43:36and I'm hoping that the cyclist will make a decent recovery.
43:40In terms of that driver of that car, young guy,
43:44not much experience at the wheel,
43:47and he's ended up making a very poor decision about when to overtake the bike
43:52and even poorer decision about how to avoid what he perceived to be a potential collision,
43:57and he's ended up injuring that person.
43:59I've not lost sight on the fact that actually he's been through something traumatic as well,
44:03but the reality is that we're prosecuting him for the offence, and rightly so,
44:08because I've got a job to do around road safety,
44:11and I'm hoping that he learns from that.
