Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S06E08 (12th August 2024)
Transcript
00:00Newcastle City Centre and a jammed handbrake means a car is refusing to come quietly for
00:18PC Jamie Leslie.
00:44UK police forces have been sent over 100,000 dash cam clips, exposing the most dangerous
00:51drivers on our roads.
00:55All hell has broken loose on our highways.
01:04We join the motorway cops of Northumbria Police.
01:12As they drive criminals of the North East off the roads and put the deadliest drivers
01:20behind bars.
01:36Helping them in their battle with idiots behind the wheel is dash cam.
01:42It's vital evidence and proof that Britain's dumbest drivers are a law unto themselves.
01:53Police one criminal nil.
02:03Tonight heartbreak on a first date.
02:10That's it, relationship over.
02:13I love you.
02:16Females right back, look off her feet.
02:20Open the door.
02:21We'll meet again, eh?
02:22There's no love lost for one suspect.
02:24F*** off.
02:25Dammit.
02:26Well, another one off the Christmas card list.
02:29You were never on it anyway, man.
02:32I was never on it anyway, partner.
02:34Right, it's going wrong way, wrong way towards the A1.
02:39And a deadly driver.
02:40It's been a jam, mate.
02:43Horrific.
02:44Races the wrong way down the A1.
02:46It's been a jam, mate.
02:49Absolutely horrific.
03:05Effective policing is often down to strong teamwork.
03:14And at Etole Lane station in Newcastle.
03:16Do you mean me car's filthy?
03:19Can you do something about it?
03:21Do you think someone's maybe sitting and I'll wash his car for him?
03:26I'll get him a wainscreen down there, I'll just pay for it.
03:32PC Jan Schimlischer knows just how to get PC Jamie Leslie to do his dirty work.
03:38Three megs?
03:39Is that my payment?
03:41Deal.
03:42He knows me soft spot.
03:44Let's get scrubbing, then.
03:50I mean, not many good friends do this, do they?
03:53I didn't realise I had my fingers crossed.
04:00That doesn't count.
04:03I'll get you a cream egg tomorrow.
04:05You better.
04:11I'll get him a little treat for washing my car.
04:13He deserves it, that's nice of him.
04:15I didn't expect him to wash it, but that's just the type of lad Jamie is.
04:28Tonight, Jan's making a clean start in Newcastle city centre.
04:33We'll see what tonight brings, Saturday night.
04:36Busy, Newcastle will be bouncing.
04:41This weekend, I've got a trip away planned with all my best friends that I grew up with.
04:46We've got a weekend away in Skegness.
04:49I know it doesn't sound too exciting, but we went last year and had a really, really good weekend.
04:54So it'll be a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which I'm far too old for nowadays.
04:59A couple of pints and that's enough for me.
05:12Good evening Northumbria Police, how can I help?
05:15Hiya, I'm calling from Tesco.
05:18I was just called to report a drunk driver.
05:21And are they currently driving the vehicle?
05:24Yes, they've just drove away.
05:30Is anyone available please to assist with a possible drink driver?
05:34994?
05:37It's a silver Mercedes, just left the scene.
05:40It's driven along the coast road.
05:42The driver was slurring his speech while he was buying more alcohol.
05:46No indication if it's gone east or west on the coast road?
05:51No, not as yet.
05:54We've had a report from the Tesco's that a male in a Mercedes has gone into the shop,
06:01slurring his speech and looks intoxicated.
06:04It's like an absolute pet hate of mine.
06:06I absolutely love getting a drink driver locked up and somebody disqualified for it.
06:11The dangers surrounding it are phenomenal.
06:15It's one of the biggest causes of death on the roads in the UK.
06:248136, a Mercedes just passed me on the road.
06:28I'm just trying to catch up to it.
06:36Yes, yes, on route from Walford.
06:40Over 6,500 people a year are killed or seriously injured in crashes caused by drink drivers.
06:54In Cambridgeshire, a driver three times over the limit is causing chaos on country roads.
07:00Dangerously veering into oncoming traffic, he narrowly avoids hitting two cars,
07:05but ploughs straight into a third, causing the innocent motorist to break his hand.
07:12The driver was found guilty of failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis,
07:16dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
07:20He was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months,
07:24ordered to do 120 hours unpaid work and disqualified from driving for two years.
07:35And in Peterborough, a boozed up driver hurtles out of control,
07:39mounting the pavement on a busy high street,
07:42only just missing a man with a child in his arms.
07:47At nearly twice the drink drive limit, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison
07:51and banned from driving for three and a half years.
08:07We've had a report that a male in a Mercedes has gone into the shop,
08:11slurring a speech and looks intoxicated.
08:16It's 1am in North Shields, and Jan is on the hunt for a suspected drink driver.
08:32There's a response officer behind the silver Mercedes.
08:37We're not too far off.
08:41Hopefully we'll get a result out of it.
08:47Jamie also joins the search.
08:53Which way are you going to go in from?
08:55I'm going to come up on the silver link now.
09:01We have a suspect.
09:03Two officers. Identities unknown.
09:16We've had a report that a male in a Mercedes has gone into the shop,
09:19slurring a speech and looks intoxicated.
09:27Watch out! Watch out! Watch it!
09:29One in five married couples think their other half is a dangerous driver.
09:37A near miss...
09:39What the...
09:40..isn't wedded bliss.
09:42Come on, then, you can go, pal.
09:44When pairs are no perfect match on the road...
09:50..it could lead to a relationship breakdown.
10:05We've had a report that a male in a Mercedes has gone into the shop,
10:10slurring a speech and looks intoxicated.
10:14In North Shields, Jan is hunting down a suspected drink driver.
10:19We have a suspect.
10:23Two officers. Identities unknown, please.
10:33Knock the car off.
10:36Hello, mate. How you doing?
10:38All right, mate?
10:39All right. You had a drink?
10:41Aye.
10:43Yeah.
10:46Aye, aye.
10:49Aye, aye.
10:56Yeah, I mean, I'm not resisting, I'm not being aggressive enough.
11:03Erm...
11:06I've had a drink, mate, I'm not denying anything.
11:09We all right?
11:10Probably... I don't know, much.
11:12I'll be over in a minute.
11:17OK, take a nice deep breath.
11:19Make your tights feel around there.
11:21Go until I ask you to stop.
11:23Keep going.
11:24Keep going, keep going, keep going.
11:26Stop.
11:32I've seen 60s.
11:34You reckon? 60s.
11:36I've seen more than that.
11:3879.
11:40Don't fall off.
11:41All right.
11:44That's understandable.
11:46The driver has blown more than twice the legal limit.
11:53Just grab a seat in there, please.
11:54Yeah, I will do.
11:55How you going, mate?
11:59I'll find out.
12:01You're not insured on this, are you?
12:03No, it's your vehicle.
12:04Right.
12:06Oh, wow.
12:08Unfortunately, he's got no insurance to drive this car,
12:11so we'll have to seize it as well.
12:13He's told me that he's insured to drive anything.
12:16Right. Well, he's not.
12:18The car's owner will have to find another way home,
12:21bringing her date night to a disappointing end.
12:29You'll not be having a second date with him, will you?
12:32We've just had a lovely photo, but I'd like to ask you a question, please.
12:36Do you need any of the balloons?
12:38He said yes.
12:40What balloons for your first date?
12:42That's it. Relationship over.
12:44Shall I tell him before he goes to the city?
12:48I love you.
12:50I'll wake you up when you're stronger.
12:55The lad's quite romantic this evening,
12:57bought some kind of balloons on a first date.
13:00He's gone all out by the looks of it,
13:02but it's not something I would bring to a first date.
13:06Too intense.
13:07Red flags, yeah.
13:09Those red flags are when I had to pay for the meal.
13:11And he made you pay?
13:13The least he can do is pay to get the car back out.
13:19Do you know what? This will be a lovely story to tell the kids.
13:22What the **** are you getting me into?
13:30I love you, Dad.
13:39I love you, Mum.
13:42Stef, I love you.
13:43I love you, Mum.
13:49I love you, Dad.
13:50A little bit stupid, I don't know if he's trying to impress the girl on a first date
14:07or what.
14:08But where they've gone for food would have cost him 10 or 20 quid, if that, for a taxi
14:15back to his.
14:16Now he'll be losing his licence, potentially putting his livelihood on the line.
14:43That's him as a puppy.
14:44There's a bit of a back story to Max.
14:47We decided we were going to get a cockapoo, and people stop you when you've got a dog
14:51and they say, oh, what sort of a dog's Max?
14:53And I say, oh, he's a cockapoo, and I could see people looking a bit, sort of thinking,
14:57hmm, are you sure?
15:00At Follingsby Nick, PC Martin Anderson is conducting an internal investigation.
15:06So I bought some dog DNA tests.
15:09It turns out we were ripped off.
15:12He's a first generation cross between a Bedlington Terrier and a Springer Spaniel.
15:17So we call him a Bedspring.
15:20Hey!
15:40I'm feeling good.
15:41I've just had four days off.
15:44I'm back where I was before.
15:46A beautiful wintery day, albeit it's freezing cold.
15:50Let's hope it's fruitful and brings us some good results.
15:55JAZZ MUSIC PLAYS
16:16We'll check this one. Tango 461 at Orby.
16:19Could I have the mobile vehicle check please on Honda Accord?
16:24report on that, if it's held.
16:27Ah, roger, thank you.
16:29There's a couple of things that's sort of tickling my spidey senses.
16:34A bit bizarre because it's registered as someone in Gateshead
16:37but then it's shown as someone in Hexham.
16:39There's quite a substantial distance between the two addresses.
16:42I also felt as well that when it was behind us it was hanging back
16:45as if the driver didn't want us to sort of see him
16:48or he didn't want to pass the police car, so we'll give him a stop
16:52just to make sure it is driving who should be.
17:04Hi mate, you alright?
17:05Yeah.
17:06Is the car registered and insured to yourself?
17:08Yeah.
17:09What sort of a licence do you have?
17:10My licence? I don't have any.
17:12Can you jump in the back of the car and we'll do some checks?
17:23Do you have any ID?
17:25No. I give you my details.
17:32I can also smell alcohol. Have you been drinking?
17:36No.
17:39I can smell alcohol.
17:42No, no, no, my friend inside the car is drinking.
17:45My smell's not that good. I can't smell him from here.
17:53When did you last have a drink of alcohol?
17:57Last night, one beer.
17:59Last night?
18:00Yeah, one beer.
18:01Nothing in the last 20 minutes?
18:02No, no, no.
18:03It's incredible.
18:05Energy, energy.
18:08Right, well we're going to do a breathalyser as it stinks.
18:12Big deep breath and blow into there.
18:15Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
18:19That's it.
18:23Oh, it's a pass.
18:27You've blown 10. The limit's 35.
18:30You've blown 10.
18:32Which is why I can smell it. I can obviously smell it from last night.
18:36Right.
18:38Tango 461.
18:39LB, I've got that.
18:40Honda stopped the driver.
18:42Can you run him through?
18:47Tango 461.
18:49Go ahead, LB.
18:50Tango 461.
18:52Go ahead, LB.
18:54Confirmed on licence holder.
18:58He's in court in August for driving without a licence.
19:04Are you secure?
19:06Go ahead, LB.
19:08This one is outstanding. Wanted for a failure of PR warrant.
19:18Brilliant.
19:26Right, bad news. You're wanted.
19:29Right, you're wanted.
19:31You haven't went to court when you should have, so they've issued a warrant for your arrest.
19:41Show me your hands.
19:43Why put me?
19:45Because you're under arrest.
19:47Okay.
19:51Give my friend my keys, my car, go my friend home.
19:54No problem.
19:56I appreciate the offer, but we're going to seize that under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.
20:04A little bit of copper's nose.
20:06When we've run him through and found that he's a non-licence holder,
20:09we've also found that he's actually wanted for a failure of PR warrant,
20:12which has been issued by the courts.
20:14So he's now under arrest, and then he'll go to custody to be put before the next available court.
20:21I mean, I'll go today with the court, no?
20:26Possibly today, I can't guarantee that, though.
20:28Please!
20:29It's not for me to decide.
20:31For me, problem.
20:34If you don't want to stay at the police station, you should have went to court.
20:37And then you wouldn't be wanted, would you?
20:39You should have just went to court when you should have went.
21:20We were right in our instincts, I think, there.
21:22He's actually been wanted for a little while.
21:25You know, almost a year he's been on his toes, avoiding the courts.
21:29But not today. He's going to be put before them this afternoon, hopefully.
21:34It was in the supermarket car park, wasn't it?
21:37So whether or not he's going to get something for his dinner,
21:39he'll be having to make do with an all-day breakfast in custody this afternoon, I would think.
21:51THE DETECTIVE
22:03Wide awake, full of energy.
22:05So I'm desperate to get out there and get involved, get stuck in.
22:11We're in a marked car, which changes how people behave.
22:13If you're in a marked car, people tend to be a bit more natural.
22:16But, of course, the world, including me, sees a marked car, you start paying attention.
22:29After 30 years in the force,
22:31Sergeant Dave Roberts knows that being a top cop takes patience, determination...
22:37It is now time for the hurry-up.
22:39...and sugar.
22:42Once a strategic location is chosen,
22:44there'll be a tactical stop, thus increasing sugar levels,
22:47allowing the rest of the shift to happen.
22:55So all these members of the public will be driving past,
22:57really clearly observing the marked police vehicle,
22:59and will be horrified to think that the reason we've actually stopped is to open their bag.
23:08Fried egg and a heart. It's a combo that you can't beat.
23:15Yeah!
23:28We'll come and give you a hand. Right, my brother.
23:31SIREN BLARES
23:42All right, then?
23:44What's happened?
23:47Well, why don't you all just push it round this junction here?
23:53That helps.
24:01By now, we're pausing bloody hell, aren't we?
24:07So the road's clear, but I just want to have a bit of a calmer look at this trailer,
24:12just make sure that the thing's in a decent condition, because I'm not convinced.
24:22Still got a scene full of muck.
24:26Whatever it is, it was a cheap trailer to start with, I think.
24:30It's a dangerous load. The handbrake doesn't work, the lights are defective,
24:34illegal registration plate on the back, the list goes on.
24:39The trailer's not roadworthy at all.
24:42You should have straps on that, you should have a cover on that,
24:44anything to stop that load moving.
24:46If that falls out the back of the trailer, you're going to cause an accident.
24:52So you two are reported for the offence of using a vehicle in a dangerous load,
24:56but that needs to come off the road. Simple as that, mate.
25:00I'm going to have a look.
25:19I bet he wished he'd never slagged me down, eh?
25:22I mean, if that thing broke away from the van in the condition that it was in,
25:26what an absolute disaster that would be.
25:30Sorry, gents. Can't let that carry on.
25:35Nice people.
25:37Just unfortunate I had a trailer that was fit for the skin.
25:40Day one on the police, I was described as an enthusiastic labrador,
25:58complete with a wagging tongue and wet nose.
26:02Do you want to think I'm quite described as a labrador with a wet nose anymore,
26:06with a tongue hanging out?
26:07um probably an older version of that maybe a bit stinky of a dog sticking in the corner but
26:12kind of gets the job done
26:23impossible throwing on a black fiesta maybe not a static storm vehicle
26:32so that's a stolen ford fiesta or a clone fiesta
26:38first thing that comes to mind when i hear a job relating to cloned plate is that somebody's
26:42trying to mask the identity of a car and that's got criminality written all over it
26:51so this is where it last pinged about 10 minutes ago
26:54nobody's got eyes on but we've got a good half dozen cars in the area looking for it
27:03but as with any game of hide-and-seek we'd find it first therein lies the risk and the trick
27:15we're just on the a1 cell phone
27:32so
27:42by far one of the vehicles has just come out of smiles lane
27:48i'll be that vehicles that now taken off as you know if you shoot now if you shoot
28:02you
28:09britain's road signs should be easy to follow give way
28:17reduce speed now
28:22no overtaking
28:25but they all point to bad drivers not paying attention
28:33with the blow
28:49outside newcastle dave is chasing the driver of a possible cloned car unknown occupants of the
28:55vehicle road conditions are wet speed eight zero
29:06just caught it it's just come past the uh the garage
29:11one six six i have a single location good lad good lad
29:17about 10 seconds it'll be with you
29:19i'm still there
29:25yeah vehicle stun speed seven zero wait for a second thing a location
29:36yes i'm content strong successful
29:38vehicle's been stung a second time successful sting
29:44it's uh starting to lose control i've got brake lights
29:50no deviation now towards the a1 yes yes approaching roundabout stand by for direction
29:58not one not one
30:01it's going wrong way wrong way towards the a1
30:06temporary abort it's going up the slip road to traveling northbound on the southbound carriageway
30:30so
30:45dangerous drivers taking on traffic head-on are a motorway cop's worst nightmare
30:51in sheffield a driver is making off from south yorkshire police
30:58he weaves recklessly in and out of traffic trying to shake off the cops
31:04hitting speeds of 90 miles per hour he has near miss after near miss
31:14the pursuit gets even more dangerous
31:16the pursuit gets even more dangerous when the suspect suddenly heads down the wrong side of the
31:21a1
31:25that speed on the hard shoulder police helicopter has eyes on the chaos from above as the driver
31:31puts his foot down at 125 miles per hour straight into oncoming traffic it's slowing it's slowing
31:41it's slowing and his driving even shocks the cops
31:46it's um so it's done a handbrake turn and it's now got the correct side of the carriageway
31:51as the driver changes direction the police surround the car finally ending the chase
32:01he was found guilty of dangerous driving failing to provide a blood sample and driving while
32:06disqualified he was sentenced to 20 months in prison and banned from driving for four years
32:23yes yes
32:27on the north end outside newcastle
32:31dave is tracking a driver traveling the wrong way down the a1
32:36lb all police vehicles have got the lights off we are on the northbound carriageway
32:47five zero
32:48dogs
32:54there's other road users on the carriageway horrific
33:04absolutely horrific
33:09yes
33:25yes yes
33:39down
33:47we've got the car off the road brought it to an end
33:52frustrating thing is really frustrating is that we haven't got hands on them
34:09a cracking set of stings though
34:15unfortunately dave de cantia made off on a land housing estate
34:20and we haven't found them so very very disappointed in that
34:26incredibly incredibly dangerous driving from the driver of that car
34:30it is only by utter luck that he hasn't ended up in a head-on collision with anything that
34:34was traveling south on the a1 as he's traveled north on the a1 utterly utterly horrific
34:59the difficulty is that when people start going contraflow in pursuits it's a total no
35:04we actually potentially could become a further risk to the public and that is a complete no
35:10totally and utterly so it's a bit of a it's a two-sided coin that one frustration because
35:16ultimately i'd like to get the hands on them and arrest them and point out the
35:20error of their ways in a court of law we haven't had that chance yet
35:34so
35:40this bag's so heavy
35:45probably all the commendations you need that to weigh it down terrible don't get jealous everyone
35:50at eatal lane nick jamie is feeling the weight of expectation
35:55me shoulders are sore from carrying all their workload keeping the team afloat
36:02and also from all the positive reviews i've got of my policing techniques that's just from the
36:07last couple of months really i have to keep shredding some of them after a while right
36:12let's get a decent graft
36:22we've had quite a few burglaries down in north tyneside quite a few stolen cars
36:27cars you know we're obviously in a marked vehicle at night so it might disrupt some
36:32form of criminality if we're if we're heading around that area a bit of proactive policing
36:37a bit of uh kind of disruption
36:44police emergency
36:51i've had in part leaving the forecourt now
36:54female driver
37:02keep on stations please for a grey peugeot 208
