00:00Tyrannosaurus rex facts!
00:09The Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk the earth.
00:16It's true, the Tyrannosaurus rex, or T-Rex for short, is named king of the tyrant lizards
00:24for a reason.
00:26And today we're going to learn all about why.
00:30When it walked the earth, the T-Rex was an apex predator, meaning that it was at the
00:35very top of the food chain with no animal predators of its own.
00:41Found mostly in western North America during the late Cretaceous period, around 68 million
00:46years ago, the T-Rex was built for dinosaur domination.
00:52The average length of a T-Rex, from snout to tail, was around 40 feet, which is about
00:58the same length as a school bus.
01:02And with a weight around 7 to 8 tons, a T-Rex weighed about the same as a school bus, too.
01:10Another interesting fact is that T-Rex was pretty fast for its large size, with speeds
01:16as fast as 25 miles per hour.
01:20But its head is where it showed its real strength.
01:23Unlike other meat-eating dinosaurs, the T-Rex had an exceptionally large brain, about twice
01:29the size of similar animals like the Gigantosaurus.
01:33To keep itself from overheating, this giant animal had vents in its head to help its brain
01:39stay cool, similar to the vents that alligators have today.
01:44Add in 60 serrated foot-long teeth and jaws powerful enough to crush a car, and you've
01:50got one dangerous predator.
01:54Scientists believe that these dinosaurs ate live animals and scavenged carcasses, making
02:00them carnivores or meat-eaters.
02:03The Tyrannosaurus rex also had a strong sense of smell, which helped it find prey.
02:10It also helped them sniff other predators and mates as well.
02:15Scientists have found that the T-Rex shares a similar sense of smell with modern-day house
02:20cats, which is kind of cool, don't you think?
02:24One of the few weaknesses that T-Rexes had was the size of their tiny arms.
02:30Can you imagine being the size of a school bus but only having human-sized arms?
02:37That's exactly what T-Rexes were working with.
02:41Tiny human-length arms with two fingers on each hand, but even though they were small,
02:47these arms were still super strong.
02:50And each finger had four-inch claws.
02:55The reason for these little limbs is still a source of debate among scientists.
03:00Some believe the arms were an evolutionary leftover or served non-predatory purposes
03:07like gripping a mate.
03:09Others think that the arms may have been adapted for slashing at short distances because a
03:15T-Rex's claws could cause some serious damage up close.
03:20Whatever the reason, it's interesting to think about.
03:24Want to know a fun fact?
03:26Did you know that T-Rexes are related to chickens?
03:30Curiously, there are two main groups of dinosaurs, Ornithischians, or those who walked on two
03:37legs and have hip bones like those of birds today, and Sarischians, those with hip bones
03:44like a lizard.
03:46T-Rexes are part of the first group, and so they're a distant cousin of modern-day chickens.
03:53Some scientists think that this dinosaur may even have had some feathers of its own.
04:00Now that we've learned all about these spectacular slayers, let's review.
04:06True or False?
04:08A T-Rex is considered to be an apex predator.
04:13True!
04:15Fill in the blank.
04:16The average length and weight of a Tyrannosaurus rex is about the same length and weight as
04:22a modern-day school bus.
04:28Name two animals that share similarities with a T-Rex.
04:34Did you remember alligators, house cats, or chicken?
04:39Great job!
04:41True or False?
04:43The Gigantosaurus had a bigger brain than the Tyrannosaurus rex.
04:48False!
04:50A T-Rex's brain was twice the size of a Gigantosaurus's.
04:56What is one of T-Rex's weaknesses?
05:00Tiny arms!
05:02Great job, everybody!
05:04You're well on your way to becoming T-Rex triumphs!
05:07Probably one of the most famous of all the dinosaurs, the Tyrannosaurus rex was a formidable
05:13foe.
05:14With lots of interesting abilities and skills, it's not hard to see why they were at the
05:18very top of the food chain.
05:21The next time you see a bus drive by, picture what it would be like if that bus was a dinosaur
05:27ready to chase its prey.
