00:00One day, Edward was in the shed where he lived with the other engines.
00:06They were all bigger than Edward and boasted about it.
00:09The driver won't choose you again, said Gordon.
00:13He wants strong engines like us.
00:18But the driver and fireman felt sorry for Edward.
00:23Would you like to come out today?
00:24Oh, yes, please, said Edward.
00:27So they lit his fire, made lots of steam, and Edward puffed away.
00:35The other engines were very cross of being left behind.
00:54Edward worked hard all day.
00:56The coaches thought he was very kind, and the driver was very pleased.
01:06I'm going out again tomorrow, Edward told the other engines that night.
01:10What do you think of that?
01:14But he didn't hear what they thought, for he was so tired and happy that he fell asleep
01:18at once.
01:20Next morning, Edward woke up to find nothing had changed.
01:23Gordon was still boasting.
01:26You watch me, little Edward, as I rush through with the express.
01:30That will be a splendid sight for you.
01:32Goodbye, little Edward.
01:33Look out for me this afternoon.
01:41Edward went off to do some shunting.
01:45Edward liked shunting.
01:47It was fun playing with trucks.
01:49He would come up quietly and give them a push.
01:52Then he would stop and the silly trucks would go bump into each other.
01:56They cried.
01:57Whatever is happening?
02:07Edward played till there were no more trucks.
02:10Then he stopped to rest.
02:14Presently he heard a whistle.
02:17Gordon was very cross.
02:19Instead of nice shining coaches, he was pulling a lot of very dirty trucks.
02:24A good strain, a good strain, a good strain, he grumbled.
02:29The shame of it, the shame of it, oh, the shame of it.
02:34Edward laughed and went to find some more trucks.
02:37Then there was trouble.
02:38Gordon can't get up the hill, the porter called to Edward's driver.
02:42Will you take Edward and push him, please?
02:49He found Gordon halfway up and very cross.
02:52His driver and fireman were talking to him severely.
02:55You're not trying.
02:56I can't do it, said Gordon.
02:59The noisy trucks hold an engine back so.
03:03Edward's driver came up.
03:05We've come to push.
03:06No use at all, said Gordon.
03:08You wait and see, replied Edward's driver.
03:12They brought the train back to the bottom of the hill.
03:20I'm ready, said Edward.
03:22No good, grumbled Gordon.
03:23They pulled and pushed as hard as they could.
03:35I can't do it, I can't do it, I can't do it, puffed Gordon.
03:41I will do it, I will do it, I will do it, puffed Edward.
03:45Edward pushed and puffed and puffed and pushed as hard as ever he could.
03:50And almost before he realised it, Gordon found himself at the top of the hill.
03:55I've done it, I've done it, I've done it, he said proudly.
03:59He forgot all about Edward and didn't wait to say thank you.
04:04Edward was left out of breath and far behind.
04:10He ran on to the next station and there he found that the driver and fireman were very
04:14pleased with him.
04:17The fireman gave him a nice long drink and the driver said, I'll get out my paint tomorrow
04:23and give you a beautiful coat of blue with red stripes.
04:27Then you'll be the smartest engine in the shed.
