During a press briefing on Tuesday, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) spoke in support of the Kids Online Safety Act.

00:00I don't know how many times Senator Markey commented and said, you know, I did this in
00:061998 with Billy Tozan, the representative from Louisiana, whoever that is.
00:12And I say that because I looked around and said, like, a lot of people here won't know
00:15who Billy Tozan is.
00:17Why?
00:18Because you were born after 1998.
00:19My freshman class colleague.
00:20Was he?
00:211980.
00:22Yeah.
00:24Which, a class that will live in infamy.
00:28Yes.
00:2980 Republicans, 19 Democrats.
00:30Nobody thought it was infamy.
00:31It was the Reagan landslide.
00:37And I say that only to drive home the point that since 1998, how much has changed?
00:45LSU, that was five football coaches together ago.
00:52That was, we got one LSU fan there, he understands that.
00:58There was no TikTok.
01:00There was no Facebook.
01:01There was no Google.
01:02None of that had happened.
01:05And yet the good work of Billy Tozan and Ed Markey dated from that point.
01:10Look at the interval change.
01:12This is, if you will, the interval update.
01:15This is taking that age of protection from less than 13 up to 17.
01:23Why?
01:24Because back then we didn't have all this penetrating into the person's mind without
01:29the parents having access to what they were seeing.
01:34But now we do.
01:36And this is Congress being responsive, at its best being responsive both to a societal
01:41need and those of individuals.
01:44Ed mentioned several things.
01:45Again, I just mentioned it increases the age of protection up to 17.
01:49I love that eraser button because every now and then I've noticed teenagers lie once or
01:55twice.
01:56And so they're going to log in.
01:57They're going to fake their age.
01:58They're going to start getting stuff that they shouldn't get.
02:01And this gives mom, this gives dad the ability to, boom, erase it.
02:04And why is this important?
02:06Because everybody in this room knows of somebody, everybody watching knows of somebody who's
02:10had their bulimia, who's had their anxiety, who's had their risk of suicide augmented,
02:17increased.
02:19Think of what the word you want to use because of what's on the internet and the algorithm
02:24just feeding them.
02:26This is Congress's attempt to make sure that that does not happen again.
02:31I thank my colleagues.
02:32Ed's been great to work with.
02:33Leader Schumer, thank you for putting that on the floor.
02:37And it was great to partner both with Blumenthal and Blackburn in two really good bills that
02:41don't do everything, but that begin to make that interval change that protects people,
02:47even those people who are not LSU fans.
