00:00This dog would still be on the streets if it wasn't for my amazing friend Joey.
00:06Oh, she's a beast.
00:10He's truly a dog hero.
00:13I've known Joey for years now.
00:15So when I started working at the Dodo, I was so excited to get a chance to show the world how amazing Joey is.
00:21I decided to go follow him on one of his rescues.
00:25Joey, what are we doing?
00:26We're going, we found this dog that it seems really sick.
00:30He was just here a second ago.
00:32I know.
00:33I've covered so many rescue stories as part of my job.
00:36But experiencing it firsthand while watching Joey was so humbling.
00:40Because I could really feel how desperate and scared this dog was until Joey came along.
00:45I watched him rescue not one, but three dogs over the two weeks he was there.
00:52Joey was asking everybody about where this dog came from.
00:55Hello, he's lost.
00:57He's lost? Can you take him?
01:02You want a dog? Garrison, Perro?
01:06He brought the dog chicken and beef to try to earn its trust.
01:10He didn't let us come near him at the beginning.
01:12So we would have to like throw the chicken and beef at him.
01:15Every time another person came by, he would cower away.
01:19Oh, he's scared.
01:21But I knew the whole time this was a good dog.
01:25This was a dog that didn't deserve to be on the streets.
01:28And just needed a chance to feel loved.
01:34I couldn't come out the next day, but Joey was committed.
01:37It's okay, baby.
01:39We're going to attempt to get the dog with this amazing vet.
01:44When Joey told me what happened after this, I couldn't believe it.
01:47Can you speak to just like how you suddenly knew like,
01:50oh, there's hope for this dog and we're going to make this happen?
01:53There's often times we don't have a plan.
01:55And we're like, let's just take it day by day, minute by minute.
01:58And it was very fateful because just as we were about to get the dog to the vet,
02:03this amazing couple came out of the restaurant saying that we were actually
02:07trying to figure out how to adopt the dog. We didn't know how.
02:11So it was just such a community effort where everybody just coming out of restaurants
02:16and like different cafes. Luckily the dog wasn't really sick.
02:19So we were able to get the plan in motion.
02:22It really is like a little Pixar movie how it happened.
02:27Did I come back? Are you happy? Yeah, look at that tail.
02:31The issue was that there was an embargo.
02:34So no dogs could leave Puerto Vallarta by plane. They lived in Canada.
02:39So we had to be very resourceful. I reached out to some of my contacts.
02:43We got the dog to go to Tijuana for a couple of days.
02:46We got somebody to drive the dog from Tijuana to Los Angeles.
02:50And the adopter drove all the way down from Canada to get the dog and then drive back up.
03:07Now Jesus is in Canada and living his best life.
03:14They sent me a video of Jesus with his new owners at a cafe.
03:19He looks so relaxed. I'm so excited to see him just learn to love and learn that he's safe.
