Manchester City beat Manchester United at Wembley to claim silverware in the opening game of the season.
Transcript
00:00I'm at Wembley where this afternoon Manchester City have beaten Manchester United in the Community Shield on penalties winning 7-6.
00:07You can probably just see with my shoulder that the players are showing off their latest piece of silverware to the fans.
00:14Even though it is perhaps they have much bigger things to contend with this season.
00:19A much bigger loftier ambitions than the Community Shield.
00:22But Pep Guardiola and his side will be delighted that they got the season off to a winning start.
00:27Particularly considering they have lost this game in each of the last three years.
00:32The game here at Wembley finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
00:35Alejandro Garnaccio scored with 8 minutes left and you thought it was going to be United who were going to claim the bragging rights here in the derby.
00:42But a late Bernardo Silva header, I think it was in the 90th minute, forced extra time or forced penalties.
00:48And I think he showed how much that meant to both him and City.
00:52He was absolutely delighted, fist bumping, celebrating towards the fans who replicated that back to him.
00:57Went to penalties, it was actually Silva who missed City's only penalty in the regular five.
01:01Jadon Sancho playing his first competitive game in nearly a year for Manchester United.
01:05He also missed, went to the 8th lot of penalties and it was ultimately Johnny Evans who missed the decisive penalty for United.
01:13Mahmoud Al-Khanji stood up, slotted home from the spot to ensure that it was City who were victorious here this afternoon.
01:19But I don't think either team were up to full speed today really.
01:23I think it looked like two sides who were very much keying in their fitness at the start of the season.
01:27But both teams have really lacked a proper full pre-season because of the number of players that have been away on international duty.
01:36City in particular have had 16 players away.
01:39I thought they looked a little bit sloppy at times today, filling up from the back.
01:42Certainly not up to their usual standards.
01:45Didn't dominate the midfield as they usually do.
01:47I think without Rodri, their standards really do drop for City.
01:51They're missing a lot of players. Silva was on the bench.
01:53Kevin De Bruyne was on the bench for them as well.
01:56But we did see the introduction of Savino making his Manchester City debut.
02:00And he did also score a penalty during the shootout as well.
02:03For United, I thought it was actually a similar story for them.
02:06They were probably the slightly better team over 90 minutes.
02:08Certainly in the second half, they built up some really good counter-attacks.
02:11Bruno Fernandes was excellent.
02:13Alejandro Garnaccio, when he came on, was good.
02:15Marcus Raphs was lacking again.
02:17Really struggled, missed the kill there.
02:18His opportunity at the end of the game that he probably should have scored.
02:21May well have sealed the game for United.
02:24But I think for both teams, as I say, there was a real sense that this is them building back up to their best levels.
02:30And to trying to get back to a solid level at the beginning of the Premier League season.
02:36But City, they'll be delighted at least that they've finished today with a bit of silverware.
02:40The world will be pleased.
02:41He spoke about the importance of this game.
02:42And I remember last year when City didn't manage to win the trophy, how disappointed he was.
02:46So he'll be delighted at the very least that they've got up to a winning way.
02:49I'll show you one last look.
02:51City certainly enjoying themselves here today.
02:53They've had plenty of days to remember at Wembley.
02:55But it's been a while since they've won this trophy here at this stadium.
02:59And I'm sure they will enjoy themselves tonight.
