00:00The new Human Rights Commission of Malaysia chairman will face a daunting challenge in
00:08pursuing the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
00:13of Racial Discrimination, says former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim.
00:18Zayed said Hishamuddin Yunus must exercise caution and temper his enthusiasm, highlighting
00:24that getting Malaysia to ratify ICERD would be challenging.
00:28Instead, he said Hishamuddin can start by having Suhakam address other less onerous
00:33issues related to human rights, such as those concerning police stations and the Malaysian
00:39Anti-Corruption Commission.
00:40Zayed said police reports are often used to justify interrogations, and Suhakam should
00:46ensure that false reports are not overlooked and do not go unpunished.
00:51He said that Suhakam should also ensure that the police and magistrates follow procedures
00:56relating to remand powers.
00:58Zayed also said Suhakam could examine MACC's power to freeze the accounts of those under
01:04investigation, warning that such limitless powers can cause hardship for many people.
