00:00It was early morning on the island of Sodor.
00:03Duncan was waiting for Peter Sam,
00:05who was bringing some trucks for him to take to Strawberry Grove.
00:09Duncan was also to take the headmaster and a new organ.
00:13While they waited, the headmaster played a lively tune.
00:20Peter Sam had steamed all through the night to bring Duncan his wagons.
00:25But as he approached the junction,
00:28a low-hanging branch knocked his whistle off.
00:32This meant he couldn't work until he got a new one.
00:38I can't run on the tracks without my whistle, chuffed Peter Sam.
00:42That would be too dangerous.
00:44An engine's not an engine without a whistle, boasted Duncan.
00:48And just to prove it, he let off a big blast.
00:52But the rest of the engines just ignored him.
00:55Duncan chuffed away in a big huff.
00:58He was cross.
01:03They're jealous of my fine whistle, Duncan huffed,
01:06as he steamed through the countryside.
01:09He whistled at some sheep,
01:11but they were too busy eating grass to take notice.
01:14Bah, said Duncan.
01:16I need to whistle louder and longer next time.
01:20Soon, Duncan approached a level crossing,
01:23where Elizabeth, the quarry lorry, waited with a farmer's prize bull.
01:27This time, Duncan whistled as loud and as long as he could.
01:36Bah, said the bull.
01:39Stop that nonsense, Duncan, Elizabeth called.
01:45But Duncan carried on.
01:48Well, Duncan carried on cheerfully down the track.
01:52But he hadn't noticed his whistle had come loose.
01:58Then Duncan saw Terence ploughing a field.
02:01He'll get the loudest and the longest whistle yet, he chortled to himself.
02:07And he blew so hard, his whistle shot off like a mighty rocket,
02:12and landed out of sight.
02:18Everyone searched for Duncan's whistle,
02:21but it was nowhere to be seen.
02:23We're stuck, said his driver.
02:25We can't move without a whistle.
02:27It would be too dangerous.
02:29Leave it to me, the headmaster said.
02:39For the rest of the day, Duncan didn't make a sound,
02:43but the headmaster's organ did,
02:46As Duncan delivered his trucks,
02:48the headmaster tooted the organ at every crossing and every stop.
02:53It alerted everyone, just as well as a whistle would.
02:57Although Duncan didn't think so.
03:09Finally, Duncan finished delivering the last of his trucks.
03:16MUSIC
03:43Duncan steamed quietly back to the junction,
03:45the junction as the headmaster played the organ.
03:49Look, Rusty teased, it's Duncan the musical engine.
03:55Let's whistle along, said Rheneas.
03:58Toot, toot, said Skarloey.
04:00But Peter Sam, who had a shiny new whistle, felt sorry for Duncan.
04:04You really did well to deliver your goods without a whistle, he said.
04:08Do you think so? said Duncan, cheering up a bit.
04:12Absolutely, said Peter Sam, even though an engine's not an engine without a whistle.
04:18Or an organ, chuckled the headmaster, and he tooted the organ.
04:23And all the engines tooted back, except Duncan, who just grinned.
