00:00The engines on the island of Sodor are good at different things.
00:07Gordon is a very good express.
00:13Percy is good at carrying the mail.
00:16And when Edward is not hauling trucks, he's very good at being a back engine.
00:22When engines have heavy loads, Edward buffers up behind and helps push.
00:27But Edward is old. Some engines think this makes him unreliable.
00:32Edward is a useless old steam pot, Gordon sniffed. He should be retired.
00:38But he doesn't have tyres, Percy said.
00:40Retired, said Thomas, means taken out of service.
00:44And not a moment too soon, said Gordon.
00:47And the other big engines agreed with him.
00:49But Percy was very upset.
00:55Later, his driver asked him why he looked so glum.
00:58Percy told him about Edward.
01:00The big engines don't think he's useful anymore, he said.
01:08Percy's driver saw the Fat Controller and told him what Percy had said.
01:12I will attend to the matter immediately.
01:17The Fat Controller had a plan.
01:19The new loop line is completed, he said to Edward.
01:22I want you to teach Stepney how to run it properly.
01:25But, sir, he asked, who will look after the trucks?
01:29Duck will do your work, the Fat Controller replied.
01:35When the other engines heard Duck was going to help them, they were pleased.
01:40Duck is very reliable, said Henry.
01:44It makes no difference to me, said Gordon pompously.
01:47I don't need a back engine.
01:49I don't need a back engine.
01:50And he wheeshed away.
01:55Edward enjoyed working with Stepney.
01:58It was great fun delivering passengers to stations in the beautiful countryside.
02:08But Duck was not happy.
02:10The trucks were playing their silly games.
02:12Duck should play with other ducks because he's no good at pulling trucks.
02:17Quack, quack, quack, quack, hold back, hold back, they giggled.
02:22Duck found himself going slower and slower and slower.
02:27Halfway up Gordon's hill, his wheels stopped altogether.
02:32Duck was stuck.
02:34Oh, no, said his driver.
02:36This is Gordon's line.
02:38Duck's guard phoned the signalman to warn him.
02:41It's too late to switch Gordon to the middle line, said the signalman.
02:45You'll have to flag him down.
02:47Gordon saw the guard.
02:50If I stop on this hill, I'll never get started again, he said crossly.
02:56And he buffered up to Duck.
02:59Gordon tried to set off again, but his wheels spun and spun.
03:04It's no use.
03:05We need a back engine, said the driver.
03:08I'll send for Edward.
03:10Gordon was cross.
03:12Edward was excited.
03:14He was going to be the back engine for two trains.
03:21Edward cheerfully buffered up and the strange train set off.
03:38They chuffed gently into the station.
03:45Look at that, laughed the boy.
03:48The back engine must be the strongest and the best.
03:51Gordon was embarrassed.
03:53The Fat Controller spoke severely to Gordon.
03:56You have said rude things about Edward, the Fat Controller said.
03:59He proved today that he is useful, reliable and very helpful.
04:04Gordon felt very ashamed.
04:07The next morning, Gordon apologised.
04:11The next morning, Gordon apologised.
04:14Thank you for helping me, Edward, puffed Gordon.
04:17You really are a useful engine.
04:20It's good to be back, Edward chuffed happily.
04:23The Fat Controller's plan had worked.
04:26There was no more talk about Edward retiring.
