Australia to start testing digital identification system by the end of the year

  • last month
Australia will start testing a digital identification system by the end of the year... The program's aimed at replacing physical ID checks. Through the scheme, people will be able to verify their ID through a QR code, instead of handing over sensitive documents like passports or driver's licences.

00:00So a really interesting development when it comes to our digital ID, so that's getting
00:06things like our driver's license onto our phones.
00:09This is called trust exchange, and basically it's the government's attempt to try and digitise
00:17the ID verification process.
00:20We don't know a lot about this proposed system at the moment, but the government has shared
00:24a couple of examples.
00:26They say if you go to a hotel under this new proposed system, you could scan a QR code
00:33and then you could transmit through that QR code information about your passport, and
00:38this would save the hotel manager or receptionist having to go and make a photocopy of your
00:44passport, and obviously businesses having information like your passport isn't a good
00:50thing in this environment where we have lots of cybercrime at the moment.
00:55Also when it comes to entering a venue where you need to be over the age of 18 under this
01:00new proposed system, what you could do is you could go and tap and pay using your phone
01:05in much the same way you would if you were buying a coffee with your phone in the morning.
01:11What that would then do is actually transmit a digital token which has information about
01:16your date of birth to the venue, and then you'd be able to access that venue.
01:22We know the government has concerns about businesses holding lots of information about
01:27their customers.
01:29This appears to be an attempt to take the burden off businesses and also give users
01:35and people a little bit more control and oversight over where their sensitive documents are located.
01:42At the moment it's in the proof of concept stage.
01:45We're expecting to see some trials either by the end of this year or early next year,
01:50but later today at the National Press Club, Government Services Minister Bill Shorten
01:55will be talking and hopefully we learn a little bit more about this proposed trust exchange system.
