Customs foils drug smuggling attempt at KLIA

The Customs Department intercepted a local passenger attempting to smuggle 15.3 kg of marijuana, worth RM55,530, in their luggage at KLIA1 on Aug 4, after arriving from Bangkok.

At a press conference on Wednesday (Aug 14), Central Zone Customs assistant director-general Norlela Ismail reported that the passenger initially claimed to be carrying only bird’s nests, but a search uncovered 27 packages of suspected marijuana hidden in the luggage.

00:00The first case is a drug case. We received this case on the 4th of August.
00:11Customs officers from Terminal 1 International Airport, KLIA,
00:20have managed to arrest a Malaysian passenger on the international terminal 1.
00:29The passenger arrived at the airport and boarded a local flight from Thailand.
00:36As soon as the passenger boarded the flight,
00:40the police found drugs in the luggage.
00:45During a thorough investigation, the passenger stated that
00:50he only brought bird's nests.
00:55However, a customs officer found 27 packs of bird's nests
01:04that contained a set of growing materials.
01:08The initial test on the set of growing materials,
01:12was found to be a type of weed.
01:15The quantity was 15.3017 kilograms.
01:22The value was estimated to be around RM55,530.
01:31The officer hid the drugs in an aluminium luggage
01:38and claimed that it was a type of bird's nest.
01:43This case is still under investigation.
01:46The case is still under investigation under Section 39B, Sub 1, Sub A,
01:53Criminal Code 1952.
01:56If the offender is found guilty,
01:59the offender may be sentenced to life imprisonment
02:02or up to 12 years in prison.
