Round 5 of the 2000 F1 season at Barcelona.
Transcript
00:00:00Two years ago in Barcelona, Mika Hakkinen won the pole, and the Spanish Grand Prix, and the World Championship.
00:00:08He repeated the same in 1999, pole, race, and title.
00:00:13But this year, Hakkinen has been anywhere but in the spotlight.
00:00:17He's scored points, but has yet to finish atop the podium.
00:00:21Is Spain his lucky race?
00:00:23Is today the day Mika Hakkinen turns his 2000 season around?
00:00:30Hello everyone, and welcome to Barcelona, and round five of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
00:00:58Today is the Grand Prix of Spain from the circuit to Catalunya.
00:01:02Welcome to our Fox Sportsnet coverage.
00:01:04I'm Mike Joy, alongside five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Eric Bell.
00:01:09From F1 Racing Magazine and the London Sunday Times, Peter Windsor will join us from the pit lane for our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:01:16Here's a look at what's coming up for you this next half hour.
00:01:19David Coulthard walks away from a horrific, spectacular plane crash earlier this week.
00:01:27He'll tour the nerve center of the West McLaren Mercedes team.
00:01:31The pit lane's fan will show qualifying highlights that showed rush hour right in the final moments for both the two top teams.
00:01:39And we'll go Formula One on one with the new star of F1, 20-year-old Jenson Button.
00:01:48Michael Schumacher returns from one of his reconnaissance laps to get the morning underway.
00:01:53He is the World Championship leader by a wide margin. He cannot give up that lead today.
00:01:59He has 20 points on David Coulthard, 22 on Mika Hakkinen, the defending World Champion.
00:02:04Then his teammate Rubens Barrichello, his younger brother Ralph, and Giancarlo Fisichella, the top half dozen.
00:02:10Likewise, in the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari, even if McLaren Mercedes were to score maximum points, Ferrari would leave Spain with the lead.
00:02:19Williams BMW third, while Benetton Jordan and British American Racing scrap for fourth.
00:02:27The Jordans, which did not have a great day in qualifying yesterday, as reconnaissance laps continue,
00:02:33grid full of well-wishers there and mechanics here at Catalunya.
00:02:40Earlier this week, David Coulthard was en route to Nice when his plane developed engine trouble
00:02:45and the pilots managed to get it down to the runway in Lyon.
00:02:48The front of the plane, though, exploded, and miraculously, Coulthard, his fiancée, American Heidi Walensky,
00:02:55and his trainer, Andy Matthew, walked away from this.
00:03:00Just two days after the crash, this Thursday, David Coulthard explained to the media.
00:03:06I'd like to express our heartfelt sympathy for the families of the two pilots, David Saunders and Dan Worley,
00:03:13who behaved in the utmost professional manner throughout the accident.
00:03:16On impact, the plane's wing tanks ruptured, and there was a fire on the right-hand side of the aircraft.
00:03:21When the plane finally came to a rest, the front of the cockpit had broken free from the main fuselage.
00:03:27At this point, we established the only way out was through the front, and Andy led the way through the debris,
00:03:32and as this part was three or four feet off the ground, I followed to enable Heidi to get down from the aircraft.
00:03:41Once we were all clear of the plane, I returned to the plane to see if there was anything I could do for the pilots,
00:03:46but there was nothing I could do to help.
00:03:48In less than a minute, the emergency services arrived, and I would like to express our thanks to the French emergency services
00:03:54and airport authorities for the professional and swift response.
00:03:59How do you walk away from that and get back into the race car? Jackie Stewart explains.
00:04:04One of the great abilities that a racing driver has, or what I would call a professional risk-taker has,
00:04:10is that they can compartmentalize their mind, and they can step out of that compartment and go into a fresh challenge
00:04:18without their mind being interrupted by any events or circumstances, whether they be emotional,
00:04:26whether it be grief in some cases, or whether it be euphoria in other cases,
00:04:31and they can focus better than any group of people that I know of in the world.
00:04:35Their crisis management with regards to their mental attitude is, I believe, second to none.
00:04:43Well, as always, very eloquently explained by Jackie Stewart, but I must point out they did the best thing possible.
00:04:48David and his fiancée actually flew to Barcelona on Thursday.
00:04:52The most important thing, though, is you've got to get back in that car,
00:04:55and David's had a lot of criticism about the fact that how could he possibly race after this tragedy,
00:04:59but the only way he can do anything is to get in that car.
00:05:02His concentration is totally focused on racing that car, and his best job is in that car.
00:05:06That's what he'll do today.
00:05:08And the father of one of the pilots who perished in the crash phoned the McLaren team here in Spain yesterday
00:05:14and encouraged David to race well.
00:05:17Well, there is other news of these past two weeks.
00:05:20Since we were at soggy Silverstone, let's go to the paddock and join Peter Windsor.
00:05:26Surprising news since Silverstone is that Mike Gascoyne, the technical director of the Jordan-Mugen Honda team,
00:05:31is to work in future for the Renault-owned Benetton outfit.
00:05:34I say in future. In fact, Gascoyne has a further 12 months to run on his Jordan contract,
00:05:38and Eddie Jordan, very calm about the matter, says he's going to enforce those 12 months of working.
00:05:43He's doing that because he says Gascoyne is a great manager of personnel.
00:05:47He's a technical director, of course, but he's great at bringing on new young guys,
00:05:51and that's what Jordan are going to do over the 12 months.
00:05:53And Eddie says that's what Jordan do best as a team, bring along young talent.
00:05:58Jack Villeneuve has said that he has no back problems at all, contrary to rumour.
00:06:02And at Jaguar, lots of changes. The chrome Leaper has left the top of the motorhome.
00:06:07And simultaneously, Neil Ressler has announced that he will be based in Europe in future
00:06:11and will be taking more hands-on control of that team.
00:06:14Let's hope the fortunes change for Jaguar.
00:06:16The rumour is they're hoping to woo Ross Brawn from Ferrari,
00:06:19much as they tried to get Micah Hacken in last year from McLaren.
00:06:23They failed to get Hacken in, of course, and Ferrari are saying they're unlikely to get Ross Brawn.
00:06:27And Brawn privately is saying that as well.
00:06:30So let's see what happens at Jaguar. They need to change a lot.
00:06:33Shame they lost Ekbal Hamady last year.
00:06:35That's what they really need, a great aerodynamicist, in my opinion.
00:06:40David Coulthard coming in after one of his reconnaissance laps.
00:06:43He'll line up in the second row today.
00:06:47Well, I hope that Mr. Ressler finds it easy to settle in to actually running a racing team,
00:06:53because, my goodness, I think it's quite a different thing to running a major development program with Ford.
00:06:58Yes, he was the head of all of Ford engineering worldwide,
00:07:00and for him to move lock, stock and barrel to England to run the F1 team
00:07:05just stresses how important this series is to the fortunes of Jaguar
00:07:10and to Ford Motor Company, which owns Jaguar.
00:07:13We're at the Circuit de Catalunya. We're just outside beautiful Barcelona.
00:07:18A couple of views of the city, including an area where, much like Central Park,
00:07:22one horsepower is the rule.
00:07:27We get a lot of your questions on e-mail,
00:07:29and we've had a lot of interest in the hand system, the head and neck support system
00:07:33that Dr. Robert Hubbard of the University of Michigan designed,
00:07:36and Camel GT driver Jim Downing attempted some ten years ago to bring to widespread use in the U.S.
00:07:42Kyle Petty tried it in NASCAR, didn't much care for it.
00:07:45It didn't really much catch on.
00:07:47But the device now has been worked on by Daimler Chrysler and the West McLaren Mercedes team engineers,
00:07:52and David Coulthard has tested with it.
00:07:54You see it there in red.
00:07:55The shoulder harnesses strap it, hold it firmly, and cables tether the helmet to this hands device
00:08:02to prevent whiplash in the event of a bad crash.
00:08:06And testing will continue, and it's been recommended by Dr. Sid Watkins
00:08:09that it be mandatory in F1 next year.
00:08:12Now, we'd appreciate your e-mail comments and questions.
00:08:15Our address is formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:08:18We read all your e-mails.
00:08:20We can't respond to all of them due to the volume received,
00:08:22but we'll try to incorporate ideas of general interest into our upcoming telecasts.
00:08:26As you see Håkonen coming up there, you'll notice that inó
00:08:29well, you won't notice, but we noticed that they had actually adjusted his front wing
00:08:32during his lap, reconnaissance laps.
00:08:35Just some little tweaks.
00:08:36He's not been very happy with the car this weekend.
00:08:38In fact, in warm-up this morning, they had a tremendous amount of oversteer.
00:08:42HÃ¥konen will start this second.
00:08:44Remember, he won this race the last two years,
00:08:46as well as the pole and the world championship,
00:08:49but he is not on pole today.
00:08:51Good shot of the camera on top of the airbox there,
00:08:53just for those of you who wonder what that little aerodynamic device is.
00:08:56That, in fact, every car has a mandatory camera mounting on the top of the airbox.
00:09:01Well, Formula 1 drivers have often compared to astronauts,
00:09:04and you've all seen on the telecasts of NASA Space Shots,
00:09:07Houston Mission Control.
00:09:09Let's look at Formula 1 Mission Control with Peter.
00:09:12This is where the West McLaren team managed the races of David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen.
00:09:17Twelve personnel in total allowed on the pit wall.
00:09:19Typically, a team like McLaren would probably have a maximum of eight.
00:09:23A plethora of television monitors, as you can see, 28 in total,
00:09:27and these would cover on the top level everything from the race information channels.
00:09:31There'll be three of those.
00:09:32That's the Tag Heuer Siemens information,
00:09:35and then moving towards the center, the digital television feed.
00:09:38Now, if the McLaren team surf this enough,
00:09:41they will find somewhere on that digital feed their two cars.
00:09:45That's because the digital feed covered the front of the race, the middle of the race,
00:09:48the back of the race, the pit lane, and, of course, the onboard cameras.
00:09:52So you'll often see Adrian Newey or Ron Dennis reaching up, changing channels.
00:09:56That's so they can pinpoint where their drivers are on the circuit.
00:09:59Below that, fantastic plasma flat-screen monitors.
00:10:03That is basically for looking at the telemetry from the car.
00:10:06The car sends it back in real time to an antenna on the truck at the back of the garage,
00:10:11and that information is then sent here to the pit wall where it's disseminated.
00:10:15Key information is shown here.
00:10:17If there's a problem, you'll see an Adrian Newey or a Dave Ryan, the chief mechanic,
00:10:21going back to the back of the garage to verify that problem.
00:10:24Finally, tremendously sophisticated communication system.
00:10:27It doesn't always work, it has to be said.
00:10:29VIP intercom speaks for itself.
00:10:31If there's a Michael Douglas or a Sly Stallone up here, he can talk through that.
00:10:35Base call, back of the garage.
00:10:37Intercom, that's communication on the pit wall here just between themselves.
00:10:42Mechanic radio, car radio.
00:10:44Mercedes call. There's another pit stand a little bit further down the road.
00:10:47That's for Mercedes-Illmore, so they can talk direct to that volume balance.
00:10:51And guess what? McLaren, as sophisticated as this is, McLaren think this is out of date,
00:10:55and next year they're going to have an all-new pit stand.
00:10:59Well, it makes you wonder just about how technology has gone crazy.
00:11:04They still actually hang a lap board over the pit wall to tell the drivers what position
00:11:08and how pluses and minuses are in spite of all that high-tech equipment they have behind them.
00:11:12It's weird, isn't it?
00:11:13Well, they do know how to spend the money, Derek.
00:11:15My computer monitor is not in a carbon fiber case.
00:11:17It will be next year.
00:11:19Maybe. Who knows?
00:11:21Michael Schumacher, after his reconnaissance laps, he's now out of his pole-sitting Ferrari.
00:11:26You see just virtually the whole car covered up now.
00:11:31Brother Ralph has been jumping back and forth between the car he qualified and the spare car.
00:11:35He's done recon laps in each.
00:11:39So, there's Ralph in recon laps, just about to finish up.
00:11:43There's Michael.
00:11:44Well, say you're the wife of the Formula One World Championship,
00:11:47and you want to see what life is like at the office.
00:11:49Recently, Mika took area for a ride in the McLaren F12 Cedar.
00:11:54Yeah, well, they complained about the conditions at Silverstone two weeks ago.
00:11:56My goodness me, they wouldn't have had a Grand Prix in Finland, would they?
00:11:59Nobody's got a snowmobile in Finland? Come on.
00:12:02That's pre-race for the countdown to the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:12:08Grand Prix of Europe comes up next in two weeks' time on Fox Sports Net.
00:12:11Most of you will see it at 10 a.m. your local time.
00:12:14Johnny Herbert's the defending champ.
00:12:16In Chicago and Wisconsin, you'll see it earlier.
00:12:18And in Florida, you'll see it later.
00:12:20We'll have the exact times later in our telecast.
00:12:22Most of you will get it at 10 a.m. your local time in two weeks.
00:12:25Remember that horse from the Nürburgring?
00:12:27Yes.
00:12:28That's a famous Nürburgring. On the new circuit.
00:12:34Well, the Circuit of Catalunya is one in which most all the Formula One teams test.
00:12:37Most all of them were out here, Derek, just two weeks ago.
00:12:40Or rather, during the two weeks since Silverstone.
00:12:42Well, you can see there's a mile-long straight there past the chequered flag start-finish.
00:12:46Elf is probably the best place to overtake it.
00:12:48Even that is very difficult. Like KX, there's another place.
00:12:51So let's go and do our lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:12:53It's a circuit that's not used very much.
00:12:56Sorry, it's used all the time, really, by testing.
00:12:58Every team comes here because of the weather.
00:13:00Here they are going down the straight, 195 miles an hour.
00:13:03One of the most advanced circuits on the map.
00:13:06It, in fact, has virtually every corner you could wish for.
00:13:09Every type of corner, so you can really get a car set up well here.
00:13:12But they all test here.
00:13:14Rubens now works his way up towards Repsol.
00:13:19Repsol slows it right down. It's quite bumpy.
00:13:22It's one of those circuits, although it's very smooth, they cannot get it absolutely flat.
00:13:26Accelerating up into 160 miles an hour.
00:13:30Downshifting down to second gear, 85 miles an hour.
00:13:33Accelerating out, having a job to get traction as he comes out of there.
00:13:36It's quite difficult to get traction on this circuit,
00:13:38despite the fact it's a very rough surface, or abrasive surface.
00:13:45Very fast corner. Kampser.
00:13:47Obviously, when you get the car really set up well,
00:13:49that is where you can really pick some time up through there.
00:13:52Comes down into Lakaiksa, which is the second slowest corner on the circuit.
00:13:5560 miles an hour, second gear.
00:13:57He, in fact, is going very slow because in front of him you'll see another car
00:14:00who obviously is on a reasonable lap,
00:14:02and obviously Rubens doesn't want to catch him up as he starts his flying laps, unfortunately.
00:14:07We're not seeing him at full tilt right now.
00:14:09He's working his way into the last two corners called the New Holland.
00:14:14These corners they take just about flat.
00:14:16He's about to start his lap now.
00:14:17Now he's really on it, going corner 13.
00:14:19That was a lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:14:25Ralf Schumacher has been out on several reconnaissance laps
00:14:28in both his car and the spare.
00:14:30Engine change in Ralf's car this morning.
00:14:33Perhaps there's something there that he just doesn't care for.
00:14:36But the grid here in Barcelona, not only is it just jam-packed with people,
00:14:41it makes it very difficult for these drivers completing their recon laps.
00:14:44Now here's Schumacher coming in.
00:14:46This is taped just moments ago.
00:14:49And look at the throng of people that he's trying to fight his way through.
00:14:53Derek, that can't be doing that car and particularly its clutch much good.
00:14:57It just can't be. Absolutely terrible.
00:14:58Look at him. He's nodding his head.
00:14:59He just can't understand just how bad it is.
00:15:04Well, let's have a look at highlights of yesterday's qualifying.
00:15:08Well, here at this beautiful circuit.
00:15:09Very windy it was yesterday at Catalunya.
00:15:11This department around Barcelona.
00:15:14John Alessi, he was the first man on the track.
00:15:16He's been going well all weekend.
00:15:17In fact, only qualified 18th because he dropped so far back
00:15:20latter part of the session because the track got cooler then.
00:15:23Heinz, our friend, did very little practice during the weekend.
00:15:26Thought he'd do better than 8th.
00:15:27Wasn't terribly happy with that.
00:15:29The car, nonetheless, going well.
00:15:30Ralf Schumacher we saw just now.
00:15:32Well, he did extremely well all weekend.
00:15:34He's been up there.
00:15:35That BMW engine, my goodness, they brought that on so strong.
00:15:38Pedro de la Rosa.
00:15:39First time he's qualified in the top 10.
00:15:41Local man from Barcelona.
00:15:43But, unfortunately, has to start last today through a fuel infringement.
00:15:46Nick Heidfeld, well, he only seems to get in the press
00:15:48when there's something going wrong for himself.
00:15:50Poor Nick. Formula 3000 champion last year.
00:15:53Not having the greatest of seasons.
00:15:54Johnny Herbert, neither is he having a good season.
00:15:57His camera on the front left wing fell off the car.
00:16:00He had to go in the pit.
00:16:01Michael Schumacher, meanwhile, he's been absolutely on song all weekend.
00:16:05The car going extremely well.
00:16:06He gets pole position.
00:16:07Very happy man.
00:16:09David Coulthard not so happy.
00:16:10He has to come in early with fuel pickup problems.
00:16:13And then when he goes out to qualify, of course,
00:16:15he has much, much too much fuel in the tanks.
00:16:18Right at the end, though, is quite chaotic as both the Ferraris go out.
00:16:22And then the two McLarens trying to beat Schumacher's time,
00:16:25but they couldn't do it.
00:16:27Mick Hacken had tried desperately hard,
00:16:28but actually it was Michael Schumacher.
00:16:30Let's go and hear what Michael has to say at the press conference.
00:16:33It is obviously satisfying.
00:16:34But honestly, if you look back since the beginning of the season,
00:16:38we always had the opportunity, but we didn't use our opportunity.
00:16:41As you see, things are so close.
00:16:43It's just if you just get it perfectly right, you can do it.
00:16:47If you just do a little mistake or if you have some flex
00:16:51and you cannot do your laps, then obviously you don't do it.
00:16:55But, you know, pole position is nice.
00:16:57But on the other side, the race counts.
00:17:00Let's go down and talk to Jarno Trulli, who's talking with Peter Windsor.
00:17:06Jarno, seventh on the grid for Jordan. You must be pleased.
00:17:08But how difficult a lap is it in these conditions?
00:17:11Well, it's quite difficult, especially because of the wind condition.
00:17:16I told many people before qualifying that it would have been very difficult
00:17:20to drive in these conditions.
00:17:22And the gap between one car and another car is very close,
00:17:24as we can see from qualifying.
00:17:26I must say the car was quite good, especially in the beginning.
00:17:28But then when the wind was going on, then it was very hard for us.
00:17:33Well, Barcelona, as ever, living up to its reputation.
00:17:35It's a difficult circuit, changing conditions.
00:17:37But Jordan, looking very good. Back to you.
00:17:41Well, Derek, how about a few keys for today's race?
00:17:43Well, it's a very hard circuit. As I said, a lot of grip on the circuit.
00:17:46And these long, long corners, it really is an endurance test for the drivers.
00:17:49And naturally, because of that abrasive surface,
00:17:52it's a matter of conserving the tyres.
00:17:54A good shot there of Bernie Ecclestone with some of the hierarchy
00:17:57from the Barcelona region, viewing the race this weekend.
00:18:00Escorting the King of Spain, who shook hands with Michael Schumacher,
00:18:03and has been greeting some of the drivers there on the grid.
00:18:10Shaq Villeneuve, great qualifying run. He's set to go.
00:18:13And boy, the BAR has really turned their team around this season.
00:18:16He'll line up sixth.
00:18:20A little bit of back problems.
00:18:21But the physio's been working with him, not going to bother him.
00:18:23He is set to go.
00:18:25When we come back, we'll go Formula One on one
00:18:27with the sport's newest star, here playful with his dad.
00:18:35Let's have a look at the upcoming schedule on Fox Sportsnet.
00:18:37In two weeks' time, the Grand Prix of Europe,
00:18:39then Monaco at 10am your local time.
00:18:41We'll be live at the Grand Prix of Canada, 1.30 Eastern.
00:18:44That's 10.30 Pacific, of course.
00:18:46And France, 10am your local time once again.
00:18:49On through July with Austria and Germany.
00:18:51Hungary and Belgium in August.
00:18:53Most of you will see these events at 10am local.
00:18:56And Italy.
00:18:58And the Grand Prix of the United States, 2pm Eastern time, 11am Pacific.
00:19:02Japan and Malaysia to close out our season.
00:19:05Our third here on Fox Sportsnet.
00:19:10A little bit of work down there with the Ferrari.
00:19:13Michael Schumacher now settling back in to his office for the next two hours.
00:19:18And, of course, in September, they'll be headed for Indianapolis.
00:19:21Thought today, in our countdown to Indy,
00:19:24we'd show you an update on the progress of the Formula One course.
00:19:27Grandstands and support facilities for USGP 2000 this September at Indianapolis.
00:19:34Of course, the month of May is a busy one at Indy, culminating in the 500.
00:19:38There's the view from the end of the Formula One front straightaway.
00:19:41At Turn 1, the new garages.
00:19:43The new infield, Pagoda Tower, is nearing completion.
00:19:47That will be in use at the 500 this year for the first time.
00:19:51And the tickets.
00:19:53If you want to come for three days to the USGP and sit across from the pits,
00:19:56a lot of European fans are coming, and here's why.
00:19:59It's a tremendous bargain compared to the Euro Grand Prix.
00:20:02$175 will get you a seat right across from the pits.
00:20:06But you better hurry because those seats are going.
00:20:08Nearly 200,000 seats have been sold.
00:20:11There are still tickets available.
00:20:13And for more information, you can call toll-free or you can e-mail
00:20:17the Indianapolis Motor Speedway tickets at Brickyard.com
00:20:20or call the number on your screen for ticket information.
00:20:27Jenson Button is the new sensation of Formula One.
00:20:30Fifth last week in his home Grand Prix in Great Britain, rather two weeks ago.
00:20:34And Peter goes one-on-one with this sport's newest star.
00:20:38As a 20-year-old rookie, he's the new superstar of Formula One.
00:20:42But I surprised Jenson by asking him about Keith Sutton,
00:20:45who got him a pass to watch the Spanish Grand Prix two years ago.
00:20:48Jenson saw the race from the roof of Frank Williams' motorhome.
00:20:53How did you find out about that, anyway?
00:20:55Well, I saw it when I was there. I remember seeing you on the motorhome.
00:20:58No, it seems so long ago now.
00:21:01Being part of the scene, especially being the Williams motorhome,
00:21:05was the weirdest thing.
00:21:07How does it feel to be the young guy in Formula One?
00:21:10Have you met all the other drivers by now?
00:21:12Yeah, I have, because we do the briefings, obviously,
00:21:15and the parades around the circuits.
00:21:18I've met all of them, and they all seem pretty cool,
00:21:21and we get on quite well.
00:21:23Are you aware of button mania as they're starting to talk about it?
00:21:27Are you aware of being perhaps another person when you're out of the race car?
00:21:31Button mania. It's great, isn't it?
00:21:34Not really.
00:21:36The last week's been quite strange,
00:21:38because it's the first ever time I've been noticed anywhere.
00:21:41I went into a few bars in Cambridge and in London and restaurants,
00:21:45and people actually noticed me, which is quite a strange feeling.
00:21:49It's quite good, though, especially when they're ladies.
00:21:53How did you feel in Melbourne on the grid starting your first Grand Prix?
00:22:00Excited and very, very nervous.
00:22:04A lot of people say that I don't seem to be nervous,
00:22:07but I definitely am. I think I just hide it very well.
00:22:11It was an amazing feeling, especially being sat...
00:22:14I was at the back of the grid, I know.
00:22:16Being on the grid with Michael Schumacher and Hakan and all the drivers
00:22:19I've watched for so many years in Formula 1.
00:22:21Did you have heroes as drivers?
00:22:23I think Sane probably was in the early 90s.
00:22:28Just how relaxed he seemed to be all the time,
00:22:31and obviously very focused on his job.
00:22:34And I think also Michael in the last few years, the late 90s.
00:22:39How quickly have you been able to build up a relationship
00:22:42with Frank and Patrick and with Ralph,
00:22:44in terms of feeling relaxed at what you're doing in Formula 1?
00:22:49It's been good. Even in January, I knew them quite well.
00:22:53After the tests I have here at Barcelona, we got on really well,
00:22:58and Frank's a great bloke to work with.
00:23:01Especially after Silverstone, we definitely got on well.
00:23:04But Damon Hill once said that one of the great things about
00:23:07becoming a celebrity, if that's the right word,
00:23:09is being able to meet other celebrities.
00:23:11Have you found that yet?
00:23:14A few. A few celebrities.
00:23:18I met a few at a lunch in London the other day.
00:23:23I think Niamh Campbell was there, and a few others.
00:23:26But there's one that I've always wanted to meet, and that's Brittany.
00:23:29Brittany Spears.
00:23:30I think it's probably because she's quite young as well,
00:23:33and she started off very young, like me.
00:23:36It would just be really good to meet her.
00:23:39Perhaps we should get her to the US Grand Prix.
00:23:41Yeah, definitely. I think so.
00:23:43Yeah, that would be good.
00:23:44I don't know how far it is for her to travel, but it would be good.
00:23:47Jenson, thanks very much, and good luck.
00:23:48Thank you.
00:23:50He's young, he's quick, he's confident,
00:23:52and he's been accepted the full length of the Formula 1 pit lane.
00:23:55He's Jenson Button, and he's a new Formula 1 phenomenon.
00:24:00A look at Marc Genet, who has closed the gap.
00:24:02You know, last year, the minorities were three and a half, four seconds
00:24:05off of the front row cars.
00:24:07And here, Marc Genet has cut that gap to two and a half seconds for a minority.
00:24:13So, showing a lot of progress.
00:24:14He's in his home Grand Prix today.
00:24:17We'll be back with the starting grid
00:24:19and the Spanish Grand Prix for you on Fox Sportsnet
00:24:23right after these words.
00:24:25Welcome back to Catalunya, just outside Barcelona,
00:24:28where the cars are formed up.
00:24:29The formation lap is next, and then the start of the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:24:32Today, it is 76 degrees, extremely humid,
00:24:37track temperature 88, and the chance of rain is only 20%,
00:24:41and not much of the wind that usually whistles across this circuit.
00:24:46Riding there on board David Coulthard,
00:24:49who will start fourth.
00:24:50Marc Genet, who, like Pedro de la Rosa, in his home Grand Prix.
00:24:55Remember, this is just an exploratory lap.
00:24:56This is not the start.
00:24:57That's right.
00:24:59So, let's have a look at our Mercedes-Benz starting grid.
00:25:02Michael Schumacher, his first pole since Japan last year,
00:25:04and 24th of his career.
00:25:06And Mika Akinos will be wondering when he's going to get back on pole.
00:25:10Row 2 looks like Row 1 of Ferrari to McLaren.
00:25:12It's Barrichello to line up third.
00:25:14And he's got it.
00:25:16Row 2 looks like Row 1 of Ferrari to McLaren.
00:25:18It's Barrichello to line up third.
00:25:20And David Coulthard, as we said earlier, had these fuel pickup problems.
00:25:24Back in Row 3, Ralf Schumacher, very pleased with the progress of the Williams BMW.
00:25:28And Jacques Villeneuve, very, very happy.
00:25:30A new setup they discovered in last week's testing has come out trumps.
00:25:34Bjarne O'Toole was hoping for more as the Jordans have Row 4.
00:25:38Heinz-Harald Frenzel, he was not happy with his position,
00:25:41but then, you know, it's a long race, he said.
00:25:43Pedro de la Rosa qualified 9th, but will not start there.
00:25:46More in a moment.
00:25:47Eddie Irvine made a mistake on his last run.
00:25:49That cost him. He'll be 9th.
00:25:51Jenson Buttonwell, he said, I'm not unhappy.
00:25:53He's faster than he practiced.
00:25:56Jos Verstappen and his arrows was disappointed with the qualifying setup.
00:25:59He'll be 11th.
00:26:00And Mika Salo was reasonably happy, but said he lost time in the first sector.
00:26:05Not a good day for Benetton.
00:26:07There's Fisichella. He'll be 13th.
00:26:09And Johnny Herbert, well, poor old Johnny,
00:26:11he also had problems in the last sector.
00:26:13Seems to be having them everywhere at the moment.
00:26:15For Sauber, Peter Donitz had trouble in the traffic.
00:26:18He'll be 13th.
00:26:19Riccardo Zonta, he's just one second behind Villner,
00:26:23but that's 11 spots on this grid.
00:26:26Sean O'Lacey for Frost.
00:26:27Frost continues to struggle.
00:26:29And Alexander Wurz is his ride with Benetton in jeopardy.
00:26:32He is lining up 18th.
00:26:34Nick Heidfeld and the other Frost, also no good luck this weekend.
00:26:38While Marc Genet last year qualified three and a half seconds behind the pole.
00:26:42This year, he has cut that gap by a second.
00:26:45So good run for Genet.
00:26:46Gaston Mazzucati has the new titanium cast gearbox.
00:26:51New for Minardi and new to Formula 1.
00:26:53And Pedro de la Rosa qualified 9th,
00:26:55but the fuel sample taken after qualifying from his car
00:26:59did not match the fuel sample provided at the beginning of the weekend.
00:27:03Arrows first protested, then reviewed their own data.
00:27:06And Tom Walkinshaw, the team owner,
00:27:08says that something happened to contaminate the fuel,
00:27:11that batch of fuel, during its transport.
00:27:13And they accept the penalty, and de la Rosa will start last.
00:27:16Out of interest, Michael Schumacher, Jostas Stappen and Pedro de la Rosa,
00:27:19the only three cars to be running on the medium compound Bridgestone tyre.
00:27:22Everybody else is on the soft.
00:27:27Derek, is that really significant,
00:27:29that Michael on mediums would out-qualify Mika Hakkinen on the soft tyre?
00:27:33Well, you know, it so much depends on the temperature of the track.
00:27:35Yesterday it was actually warmer than today.
00:27:37And, of course, that makes a difference,
00:27:39if the temperature was just right for Michael's tyres.
00:27:41Yes, they might not be right for him today,
00:27:43but he can't change them, as you know,
00:27:44once you're committed to qualifying, that's it.
00:27:46First corner will be interesting, of course.
00:27:47Schumacher was beside Hakkinen last week,
00:27:50or very close to him.
00:27:51Came right alongside him on the start at Silverstone.
00:27:53Let's see what happens here.
00:27:55All right, here we go with the start of the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:28:05Yes, in fact, he had Villeneuve equal with him
00:28:07most of the way down that straightaway.
00:28:13Villeneuve again may get a start.
00:28:15Nope, hits the brakes before turn one to allow Barrichello in.
00:28:20What a great start there by Ralf Schumacher.
00:28:24Great start by...
00:28:25But look at Rubens Barrichello, he fell back.
00:28:28Yes, in fact, he had Villeneuve equal with him
00:28:30most of the way down that straightaway.
00:28:36But the man of the moment, Ralf Schumacher.
00:28:47It's a Ralf jump from fifth to third,
00:28:48and one of the...
00:28:49Denise is already in the sand.
00:28:55Pedro and Denise will not complete the first lap.
00:28:57Or the last.
00:28:58Or any of them.
00:29:00They've not had a good weekend.
00:29:03I think we're going to see today
00:29:04something interesting about
00:29:05just how close these cars are
00:29:07because they do all their development work
00:29:09at Barcelona because of the climate.
00:29:17Schumacher is certainly streaking away.
00:29:19The medium tyres are working.
00:29:20You saw him on the warming-up lap
00:29:21slurving the car from side to side.
00:29:23That wasn't trying to get the fuel to the pickup point.
00:29:25That was to try and get the car to the pickup point.
00:29:27That was to try and get the car to the pickup point.
00:29:29That wasn't trying to get the fuel to the pickup point.
00:29:31That was to try and get those tyres warm.
00:29:351.1 seconds on the first lap.
00:29:37That is a lot of time.
00:29:40David Coulthard, of course, there in fourth place.
00:29:42Behind Ralf Schumacher.
00:29:46And Jaques Villeneuve doing a splendid job in sixth place.
00:29:51They have got their slightly uprated engine this weekend.
00:29:54So they're hoping for another engine yet to come.
00:29:57They're very, very happy with the revised Honda RA000E.
00:30:02Hoping for greater things later on.
00:30:08I'm very impressed, Derek, four races into this season
00:30:11with what BMW has managed to accomplish
00:30:15in a very quick return to Formula 1.
00:30:17Here BAR went a whole year with a new chassis
00:30:21without scoring a single point.
00:30:23And here's Williams BMW.
00:30:25Williams, of course, a proven commodity.
00:30:26They didn't have a great year last year.
00:30:28But BMW is showing that as quickly as they've jumped back into this sport,
00:30:31it's as if they never left.
00:30:33He's absolutely outstanding.
00:30:34Remember, the team is actually BMW.
00:30:36Oh, there's another guy off.
00:30:37That's one of the Prosters off.
00:30:39That's a Lazy.
00:30:40Oh, John Lazy.
00:30:41What an awful day for him, too.
00:30:42He was pretty well done.
00:30:44He qualified 18th.
00:30:45One of the arrows.
00:30:46Dolorosa's off.
00:30:47Now, remember, Dolorosa was working his way up
00:30:49from the back of the grid.
00:30:50You would have thought he could have kept going.
00:30:51He must have stalled it,
00:30:52because it looks like his car's well clear of the gravel.
00:30:55He actually hit the bank very hard on Friday.
00:30:57Did Dolorosa.
00:30:58That is John Lazy running back to the edge of the track.
00:31:01Not having a good season at all with Salomon.
00:31:03One wonders just how long he will continue in motor racing in Formula 1.
00:31:09Well, here's a replay of the start.
00:31:11Watch for Ralf Schumacher.
00:31:13Here, already he's inside.
00:31:15There, Barrichello.
00:31:20Now, watch at the top left of your screen.
00:31:22Look at the launch that Ralf Schumacher gets.
00:31:24Splits the McLaren and the Ferrari and jumps straight up for third.
00:31:27Outstanding start.
00:31:28Absolutely outstanding start.
00:31:30Remember that, of course, they do have this,
00:31:32they've got these new regulations about the electronics
00:31:35and whether they can run these traction control systems
00:31:38to get them better starts.
00:31:39Here's a good slow motion shot of it all.
00:31:41Now, Villeneuve almost got fifth.
00:31:44However, he was coming into turn one on the dirty side of the track
00:31:48and had to brake earlier than Barrichello.
00:31:50Yeah, but Jordan was very sideways there.
00:31:52He was off on the dirty bit on the outside.
00:31:54He was very happy to get that back, I'm sure.
00:31:56Yep, that was Frentzen.
00:31:58So, before we've completed a lap, three cars are out.
00:32:02Denis and Alessi and De La Rosa.
00:32:10Well, it'll be a short walk home for Pedro De La Rosa,
00:32:12who lives here in his hometown of Barcelona.
00:32:15Well, of course, he did start from the back of grid, as we said.
00:32:17He did qualify, in my book, officially ninth.
00:32:20There's not, but he was up in ninth position.
00:32:23He was obviously working his way through the field and came to grief.
00:32:26Well, he may have collided with Alessi.
00:32:28I'm speculating because they both went off at the same time, Derek.
00:32:30Hopefully, we'll have a replay.
00:32:33And here it is.
00:32:34Oh, look. Oh, he's locking it all up.
00:32:36Looks like he had something.
00:32:37Oh, the wing on the front.
00:32:38Yep. He had run into Alessi, we're told,
00:32:40and that's what cost him the left front wing.
00:32:42And then the car ends up sliding off the circuit.
00:32:45Yeah, well, of course, he couldn't turn into the corner.
00:32:47I don't think he realized he'd damaged the wing to that degree.
00:32:49So, as he comes up, he would lose the downforce under braking, lock the wheel up.
00:32:53And, of course, when he went to turn, wouldn't turn.
00:32:55And that's why he went off.
00:32:56It was a great pity because he could have slipped back in the pits,
00:32:58changed the nose and carried on.
00:33:00Observers at the scene are saying that De La Rosa drove into Alessi.
00:33:05And that cost him the front wing and cost him his race.
00:33:08Yes, you've got to drive with a little bit more intelligence on the first few laps
00:33:11because everybody's trying out their brakes.
00:33:13They're running different loads of fuel, as we well know.
00:33:15Not always full tanks on different strategies.
00:33:24Look at the lead that Schumacher has opened up already.
00:33:27I hope this isn't going to be one of these textbook driving lessons.
00:33:31Well, unfortunately, it seems to come that, this circuit,
00:33:34just because everybody knows so much about it.
00:33:36But if you just have that little technical edge that Ferrari seems to have had this weekend,
00:33:40all weekend, Schumacher has been quickest.
00:33:42Every run they've had, every single session has been quickest.
00:33:45Whereas at Silverstone two weeks ago, he wasn't quickest, and he never did.
00:33:49He featured in the race that much.
00:33:51But the car is working here, that is for sure.
00:33:56Ralf holding off, Ralf Schumacher there, holding off David Coulthard quite convincingly.
00:34:01Here's another shot.
00:34:02This looks like the incident here as Pedro De La Rosa.
00:34:08But De La Rosa came into the corner on the inside lane, offline.
00:34:12And he was on the dirt, you see, Mike.
00:34:14He ran in the back of Alessi, who was slowing himself down,
00:34:16probably at a greater rate than De La Rosa was.
00:34:19So as Alessi turned in, there was a car there instead of...
00:34:22That judgment.
00:34:23Yes, instead of free race track.
00:34:25So three cars are out.
00:34:27De La Rosa and Alessi have crashed.
00:34:29Pedro Diniz has spun.
00:34:32And we'll be back with the Spanish Grand Prix on Fox Sportsnet
00:34:36after this.
00:34:37Third and fourth behind the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher
00:34:41and the McLaren of Mika Hakkinen.
00:34:45Then it's Rubens Barrichello, who started third but did not get quickly off the grid
00:34:49and runs in fifth in his Ferrari.
00:34:51Jacques Villeneuve's BAR.
00:34:53The Jordans of Frentzen and Trulli.
00:34:56The Williams of Jenson Button.
00:34:58Then Mika Salo and Ricardo Zonta.
00:35:00Let's ride with Barrichello a bit here.
00:35:06Let's see if he takes these two flat.
00:35:20No, not quite.
00:35:21Now this straightaway is longer than the front stretch at Indianapolis?
00:35:33About the same, I'd say.
00:35:35You see that he is fifth and not quite just losing sight of this third and fourth place battle.
00:35:54Ralf Schumacher got a great start.
00:36:07David Coulthard in the run to turn one.
00:36:10And there's Coulthard pretty much holding station there in fourth place as a result.
00:36:18So it's a stirring start by Ralf on the BMW.
00:36:25And it looked for a while there down the front straightaway
00:36:28as if Jacques Villeneuve would improve his position on the start for the third race in a row.
00:36:33Such was not to be as he went to the inside on Barrichello.
00:36:36The dirty line going into turn number one.
00:36:38Braked early, realizing that you probably can't win this race in the first lap
00:36:43but you sure can lose it on the run to the first corner.
00:36:46And Villeneuve runs right where he qualified in sixth place.
00:36:50The pole qualifying lap for today's race.
00:36:55One second, a full second faster than this same race last year.
00:37:01As Derek pointed out, all the teams do test here
00:37:04so they've maximized their performance potential on this circuit.
00:37:08But it shows all of the developments in engine and chassis that have taken place in one year's time.
00:37:13And at the back of the grid, that's a second closer to the front of the grid than it was.
00:37:19The strange thing is Minardi don't do much testing here because they don't have a budget to go testing.
00:37:23See the black marks there coming in that corner?
00:37:25That is this ripple effect that they have at this circuit.
00:37:27That's where the car keeps bouncing on the brakes
00:37:29and just braking and gripping and braking and then gripping.
00:37:32And it's quite interesting.
00:37:33It's a lot of corners like that here at Barcelona.
00:37:39High G-force, nearly 3G as they're pulling around some of these long right-hand turns.
00:37:45Very hard on the driver's physique.
00:37:47But because they test here a lot...
00:37:49Oops, Ralph got himself a little bit out of shape under braking there.
00:37:54It's the Williams crew.
00:37:56One of those looks a little out of shape.
00:37:58But they've had a long weekend.
00:38:00Don't envy the job of a Formula 1 mechanic.
00:38:03A lot of all-nighters, a lot of long hours.
00:38:08And all for two hours of glory on Sunday afternoon.
00:38:11And then load it all up, pack it up, put it in the truck and let's all go home again.
00:38:14They sleep all the way home.
00:38:16Meanwhile, the other truck is on...
00:38:18The other race...
00:38:20Sorry, practice truck is on the way to the next race track for testing there.
00:38:27So they had a wonderful party.
00:38:28Coulthard had a wonderful party after winning Silverstone two weeks ago.
00:38:31All the drivers went.
00:38:32They were...
00:38:34Really got legless at that weekend's party.
00:38:37I'm led to believe.
00:38:38And then, of course, they have to go testing two days later.
00:38:41They were down here testing.
00:38:46You mean instead of win on Sunday, sell on Monday?
00:38:48It was win on Sunday, recover on Sunday?
00:38:50Absolutely.
00:38:51These guys have to let their hair down sometimes.
00:38:53The pressure is so great.
00:38:59Now, much like at Silverstone, behind sixth-place Jack Villeneuve...
00:39:03There's a group of cars in very close contact.
00:39:08Frentzen and Trulli, the two Jordans.
00:39:10Jenson Button, not that far back.
00:39:12Mika Salo, Riccardo Zonta.
00:39:14Joss Verstappen, Eddie Irvine.
00:39:18Hertz and Herbert.
00:39:19And Fisichella.
00:39:22Even Marc Genet, all in a pretty tight bundle.
00:39:25It'd be nice to see Genet get a good result here.
00:39:29He didn't have a good time last year, but then it was his first appearance.
00:39:34And he has really matured as a driver.
00:39:37And the Minardi just got the most recent version of the fundamental-badged Ford V10.
00:39:45And they've been told that that is the last development version for this season.
00:39:48So the power-up that they have today is what they'll have the rest of the season.
00:39:52But Minardi's found an American company to build them a cast titanium gearbox casing.
00:39:57The first one in Formula 1.
00:39:59And so it's quite unusual for Minardi to have an innovation that hasn't already made its way up and down the pit lane.
00:40:05But such was the case.
00:40:07And the Minardi people are very thankful because they said they couldn't have afforded to develop that on their own.
00:40:11It's in Mazzacani's car today.
00:40:13Not in Marc Genet's as they continue its development.
00:40:16But they think it holds great promise over the fabricated gearbox casings now in use.
00:40:21Well, let's hope so.
00:40:22The only thing is that with all the budget monies that these teams have,
00:40:25it makes you wonder whether it is the right way to go.
00:40:27Because everybody else by now would have tried everything they possibly can.
00:40:30Yes.
00:40:32Telefonica was rumored to be buying the Minardi team.
00:40:35Damon Hill was rumored to be taking over and running the Minardi team.
00:40:39Lots of rumors.
00:40:40But it's kind of like standing on the used car lot.
00:40:42You know, talk is cheap.
00:40:44Show me the money.
00:40:45And thus far, nobody has.
00:40:47And the last word, or latest word.
00:40:49The last word.
00:40:50That's Jim Rome's word.
00:40:51The latest word is that Telefonica has somewhat backed off
00:40:57from the discussions of perhaps buying the team.
00:41:043.4 seconds.
00:41:05Schumacher to Hakkinen now.
00:41:11And then a long way.
00:41:12Another bunch of seconds down to Ralf Schumacher.
00:41:14A long way.
00:41:15Rubens Barrichello is losing touch with Coulthard and Schumacher.
00:41:19With Ralf Schumacher.
00:41:22David Coulthard was seen to be icing his ribs this morning,
00:41:26but assured everybody that he would be fine in the race.
00:41:30And I have to admit that once you're in the car and you're held in tightly,
00:41:33even if you have got some pain, aches and pains,
00:41:35once everything gets warmed up in those situations,
00:41:38it doesn't seem quite so bad.
00:41:40And the shack isn't that bumpy, so it shouldn't be that bad for him.
00:41:43But, of course, it just depends just which part of the ribs it is that's bothering him.
00:41:48Coulthard's Formula One career started here.
00:41:51Nineteen ninety-four.
00:41:52He qualified ninth.
00:41:53Did not finish.
00:41:54In fact, it took him four starts here before he got his first finish.
00:41:57A sixth place in ninety-seven.
00:41:59He's finished second behind his teammate Hakkinen each of the last two years.
00:42:05Another look at the start this time from Barrichello.
00:42:07And there goes Ralf.
00:42:09Yeah, Ralf really went through, didn't he?
00:42:12You don't see Villeneuve down to the inside.
00:42:15You see Barrichello have to move to the left to give him a little room.
00:42:20It's a long way down to that first turn, isn't it?
00:42:22A lot can happen in that bit of road.
00:42:25And across Rubin's two spots.
00:42:28Hey, we're on TV!
00:42:29The Ferrari mechanic says to his mate.
00:42:36So their driver, Michael Schumacher,
00:42:39has a handy lead over Mika Hakkinen, Ralf Schumacher,
00:42:41David Coulthard, Rubin's Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve.
00:42:45You're watching Formula One on Fox Sports Net.
00:42:48Two point six second lead over Mika Hakkinen.
00:42:50And this battle continues to rage for third between Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard.
00:42:56Nightly at ten and twelve, the all-new National Sports Report
00:42:59gives you the complete wrap-up of the day in sports from a fresh perspective
00:43:02with internet interaction, news, highlights, opinions and analysis.
00:43:06National Sports Report takes you beyond the box score.
00:43:09Nightly at ten and twelve, and only on Fox Sports Net.
00:43:14There's your lead differential, and there's the gap.
00:43:17Back to the third place battle.
00:43:19Actually, Mika's picked up about a second and three quarters on Michael.
00:43:25Talking about pit strategies, we haven't really talked about.
00:43:27They should be in on lap 23 and 43 on two-stop strategy.
00:43:31I believe the majority would be on two-stop strategy
00:43:34because of the abrasiveness of the circuit
00:43:36and the fact that most of them are running the softer tyre.
00:43:40But as I said, the problem is with the variation in temperature,
00:43:43the temperature's already gone up five degrees since the beginning of the race.
00:43:46Ooh, Ralf locking up the inside front tyre there.
00:43:49Don't want to do too much of that.
00:43:52Look at the comparison of the Ferrari drivers.
00:43:54Michael Schumacher lapping a few tenths to as many as eight-tenths of a second faster
00:44:00than his teammate Barrichello.
00:44:05All we can do is speculate on the reasons why.
00:44:08Perhaps Michael started with a light fuel load.
00:44:11You know, this will play out, of course, as the race goes on.
00:44:14Well, if you're going to start with a light load,
00:44:16you should be pulling away a little bit more from...
00:44:18You would think.
00:44:19Look at this, Ralf locking up that inside front left,
00:44:22so to say, right tyre again,
00:44:24which makes him get a bit out of his shape as he turns into the left-hander following.
00:44:29We've had a lot of emails these past few weeks
00:44:32talking about pit stop and fuel strategy,
00:44:34and a number of riders have said that a driver running longer on one stint
00:44:39doesn't change the amount of fuel necessary to run the race
00:44:43and doesn't really mean a shorter pit stop
00:44:45because you still need to add so much fuel.
00:44:47And I think what those fellows are neglecting to take into account
00:44:51is we don't know how much fuel is in each car at the start of the race.
00:44:55Yes, we know how much you'll consume during the race,
00:44:58but not how much you start with.
00:44:59And they also have different-sized fuel tanks.
00:45:02These teams do.
00:45:03And we don't know what they are.
00:45:04We know Jags used to have a smaller tank than anybody else.
00:45:07So there is still quite a variable as far as when the teams stop,
00:45:11drivers stop for fuel,
00:45:13and as far as running that middle segment
00:45:16and stretching that out to shorten up that last pit stop.
00:45:19The one variable we don't know is how much fuel they start with on board,
00:45:23although we can pretty well determine how much they add at each stop
00:45:26by the length of the pit stop.
00:45:30In any case, it's only guesswork.
00:45:31It's only guesswork.
00:45:32Rubens Barrichello is not that close to these two,
00:45:35but we'll see what happens when he gets towards the 23-lap position here,
00:45:39whether Rubens starts to get closer to these two
00:45:42so that maybe he can benefit from a better pit stop
00:45:44than either Ralf Schumacher or David Coulthard.
00:45:47That's when we'll see just Ferrari's bit of strategy coming in there.
00:45:51Also seeing everybody's strategy coming in towards those pit stops
00:45:54if everybody starts to bunch up in this leading group.
00:45:58Ralf Schumacher, fifth here last year and in the points,
00:46:02and he's finished in the points in three of the four races this season.
00:46:06Now, remember, Ralf Schumacher jumped back and forth
00:46:09between his primary car and the spare,
00:46:11and they were still tinkering with the setup on his car
00:46:14right up until race time.
00:46:16So...
00:46:17And they just actually hung a board out, Mike,
00:46:19to say pump.
00:46:20I'm sure it doesn't mean pump the brakes.
00:46:22It's obviously something to do with a fuel pickup pump
00:46:24I would have thought that he has to maybe flick over
00:46:27at a certain point in the race.
00:46:31There's Jenson Button behind the two Jordans.
00:46:34Yeah, he is actually way down.
00:46:36I mean, he's in ninth place.
00:46:38Again, not easy to overtake.
00:46:40There's nothing you can really do about it
00:46:42when you're in this, on this circuit.
00:46:44It is the most difficult track to overtake on.
00:46:48Remember that they brake so fiercely,
00:46:50and these brakes are so hard,
00:46:52they brake so fiercely at these braking areas
00:46:54that there is so little room to do any overtaking.
00:46:56And you just can't get alongside anybody.
00:46:58You've got the turbulence to contend with
00:47:00and the fact you lose, of course, front-end grip.
00:47:02So although you get close to the guy in front,
00:47:04you can't follow him through the fast turns.
00:47:08Now, Button has picked up one position since the start.
00:47:11He started tenth. He's running ninth.
00:47:13And that was at the expense of Eddie Irvine,
00:47:19who started just in front of Button,
00:47:21and Irvine has backslid to thirteenth position.
00:47:24Yes, he's got Alexander Wurz
00:47:26very closely behind him.
00:47:28Wurz, of course, on a bit of a knife edge at the moment.
00:47:30We're talking about the different drivers replacing him.
00:47:33Just talk about him being replaced
00:47:35by a young Formula 3 driver
00:47:37who may well come out of Formula 3,
00:47:39and Antonio Pizzonia,
00:47:41he may well be signed up by Benetton.
00:47:43Of course, inevitably, they deny it totally,
00:47:45but the fact is they haven't ruled out
00:47:47they might test him next week.
00:47:49Also, Benetton has new front suspension this weekend
00:47:52and a slightly improved cooling system on it.
00:47:57Neither of those seem to be helping Alexander Wurz very much.
00:48:00No. Wurz is presently in fourteenth,
00:48:02as you mentioned, just behind Irvine.
00:48:04But that's a whole pack of cars.
00:48:06Verstappen, Irvine, Wurz,
00:48:09Johnny Herbert, Fisichella
00:48:11are all pretty much nose to tail
00:48:13further back in the pack.
00:48:16There is Alexander Wurz coming in,
00:48:18that very distinctive helmet of his.
00:48:22So, at lap 18, the first of Pitstops.
00:48:29Several of them coming in there.
00:48:32But they were all running in a really pretty tight pack,
00:48:35so this will be height-filled.
00:48:38Well, of course, when you're running in a tight pack like that,
00:48:42again, you're getting this understeer
00:48:44this push problems that you're getting
00:48:46and you're going to be destroying those front tires
00:48:48very much in the fast turns.
00:48:50So, you start to lose a lot of grip
00:48:52and you say, well, I'd rather go in now
00:48:54and maybe go and get some clean air.
00:48:56Marc Genet was also in.
00:49:01This is he, isn't it?
00:49:02That's Mazzacani.
00:49:06Getting a lot of opposite lock on Mazzacani
00:49:08going through the turns there.
00:49:15And Schumacher beginning to lap cars.
00:49:25And there's more pit activity.
00:49:33So, Michael Schumacher, who was fastest in last week's test.
00:49:37All the teams, I believe, except Minardi, participated.
00:49:39And here's Button in, Jensen Button.
00:49:41Ralph Schumacher was second quickest last week.
00:49:45Mika Hakkinen closing in.
00:49:47He has cut the gap down to 1.9 seconds on Schumacher.
00:49:50Good, quick stop for Jensen Button.
00:49:527.7.
00:49:54It's a very good stop by Williams.
00:50:04So, there's Mika Hakkinen.
00:50:06He's pouring it on.
00:50:08He's within two seconds of Michael Schumacher now.
00:50:12A lapped car of Heitfeld just behind.
00:50:18There's the gap.
00:50:19First to second.
00:50:25And Hakkinen has knocked another 15 hundredths
00:50:28off of Schumacher's lead that time.
00:50:31And they both had to overtake traffic,
00:50:33so he made a better deal of it than Michael Schumacher did.
00:50:37Williams, having brought in Jensen Button at lap 19,
00:50:40are now setting up for Ralph Schumacher.
00:50:52I wonder if Ferrari are doing something,
00:50:54trying to do something very cool here,
00:50:56and Schumacher running further than he did before,
00:51:00because they've been so dominant through the week of testing.
00:51:02Makes you wonder whether they haven't planned something a bit different.
00:51:05Maybe, you know, one can't fail but think,
00:51:07well, maybe they will only do one stop.
00:51:09You can imagine it for one moment,
00:51:11but strange things happen at Ferrari these days.
00:51:14Johnny Herbert going in for refueling.
00:51:18Johnny was lying in 14th place,
00:51:20right behind Eddie Irvine.
00:51:29Can't get the fuel filler off,
00:51:31and he's cursing and swearing, but it wasn't that slow.
00:51:34Keep that thing under the speed limit as you go down there, Johnny.
00:51:40Johnny, of course, was 2nd here in 1995,
00:51:42when he raced with Benetton.
00:51:44Had a couple of Formula 1 Grand Prix victories during that period.
00:51:49Hope he didn't go out in front of Michael Schumacher, no.
00:51:52Herbert scored twice in the points here.
00:51:54He had a 5th place in 97, but
00:51:57this is a very difficult year for Jaguar,
00:51:59and for Johnny Herbert in particular.
00:52:02The problem with Jag, I think it's,
00:52:04since Jackie Stewart has been sort of taken over,
00:52:06team-bought out, it's put so much pressure on Ford,
00:52:09and suddenly they find themselves,
00:52:11it seems like, with a hell of a lot of chiefs,
00:52:12and not too many good Indians.
00:52:14And, uh, I'm a bit worried about the whole set-up there.
00:52:17There's been a lot of criticism about it.
00:52:19Neil Ressler, of course, we've already discussed.
00:52:21But, you know, a man that I don't believe
00:52:23is necessarily that knowledgeable
00:52:25about literally running a team.
00:52:26I know he's very involved with racing.
00:52:28Um, I know that, um,
00:52:30that Bobby Rahal is a great friend of the Ford company.
00:52:32He's even talked of Rahal possibly
00:52:34coming to run the Jaguar team.
00:52:36Now, that, to me, would have been a bit strange,
00:52:38because he's an IndyCar man,
00:52:40but he is a very knowledgeable team runner.
00:52:42Yes.
00:52:43Ooh, a lot of dirt there,
00:52:45as somebody obviously gets it very wide.
00:52:47I think that was...
00:52:49Might have been Fisichello, uh,
00:52:51just ahead of Michael.
00:52:53We'll be back for pit stops.
00:52:55Michael Schumacher on Ferrari leading
00:52:57the McLaren of Mika Hakkinen.
00:52:59You're watching Formula 1, the Spanish Grand Prix,
00:53:01on Fox Sportsnet.
00:53:03Back to our coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:53:06Here are the leaders, virtually nose to tail,
00:53:08as Schumacher has had a little bit of difficulty
00:53:11working the race traffic,
00:53:13and now has the second-place car
00:53:15directly behind.
00:53:17There's activity at Jordan.
00:53:20And Ferrari, by the look of it.
00:53:22And Jacques Villeneuve was in at lap 22,
00:53:25and, uh, surrendered sixth place
00:53:27with his first stop.
00:53:29Jarno Trulli...
00:53:32trying to get restarted.
00:53:35They've got the starter plugged into the back of, uh,
00:53:37his Jordan, trying to get him running.
00:53:39Certainly turning the wheels.
00:53:43Might have been locked...
00:53:44Could've even locked in gear, Derek,
00:53:45and that'd just be the starter motor
00:53:46turning it all over.
00:53:47I think it would.
00:53:48No, I was gonna say, I think it would.
00:53:50Mazzucconi is in.
00:53:53Still, Schumacher isn't making much headway
00:53:56on the jag in front of him.
00:54:00The way he's dropped right back,
00:54:01he dropped two seconds, basically, in a whole lap,
00:54:03the clutches of Mika Hakkinen,
00:54:04who's driving a superb race.
00:54:06Ralf Schumacher, third place,
00:54:07pops in the pits for a refuel and tyres.
00:54:10And these are the guys that are on two-stop track.
00:54:12The jag pulls over, let the leaders through.
00:54:14Uh, the Ralf having...
00:54:18a replenishment.
00:54:197.7 was a button stop.
00:54:20This one's a 7.8.
00:54:21Very, very close.
00:54:22Great teamwork by the, uh, Williams BMW team.
00:54:27Then, on the rev limiter, the light goes out,
00:54:29shuffles up the fuel cap, and off he goes.
00:54:33So, by the timing of, uh, those stops,
00:54:35and the length of those stops,
00:54:37you would guess, uh,
00:54:38that Williams is on a three-stop strategy
00:54:41for both cars.
00:54:42With a short, with a seven-second,
00:54:44would they have taken on a full load?
00:54:46Of course, again,
00:54:47we don't know how much fuel they started with.
00:54:49So, we can only guess.
00:54:51It looks like they're on a two-stop strategy.
00:54:53Okay.
00:54:54Uh, as far as stopping at that point,
00:54:56lap 22, 23, and then again at 43,
00:54:59should be two stops.
00:55:04And Jack Villeneuve has retired.
00:55:06Engine problems.
00:55:07Ferrari in the pits.
00:55:08Schumacher comes in for, for his refueling.
00:55:10Let's just see how quick this is.
00:55:12This is where Schumacher really works hard
00:55:14at getting in those pits.
00:55:15On the limiter, down to his stop.
00:55:17Stops.
00:55:18Refu- whoops.
00:55:19That's the Jack, man.
00:55:23That's absolutely vital.
00:55:26Oh, Christmas.
00:55:27He nearly caught, took the man out
00:55:29with the fuel on the back.
00:55:30What a good stop, though.
00:55:31Might have just picked it.
00:55:32Just like another McLaren behind him.
00:55:33I don't know if that was David Coulthard
00:55:34coming in behind.
00:55:35Yes, I think it might have been.
00:55:42Along his stop.
00:55:43Oh, David, David, David.
00:55:45You've got to get that gear.
00:55:49Obviously, not many of us at home
00:55:50have ever used one of these electronic boxes,
00:55:52but it's so difficult.
00:55:53I mean, you have a readout in front of you
00:55:54telling you which gear it's in.
00:55:55This mechanic is hurt, obviously.
00:55:57He was hurt.
00:55:58This is Michael Schumacher.
00:55:59Michael got him with the right rear tyre
00:56:01just as the camera panned.
00:56:02You saw him falling away,
00:56:03and he just wasn't able to step back
00:56:05quickly enough, Derek,
00:56:06so Michael caught his foot,
00:56:08perhaps his lower leg, as well.
00:56:10Well, one assumes he was told to go.
00:56:12Let's see who told him to go.
00:56:13Yeah, he was told to go.
00:56:14It wasn't Michael's fault.
00:56:15He was told to go by the man
00:56:16with the big disc on the end of the big stick,
00:56:18and, of course, the fuel man
00:56:19just didn't quite get it off,
00:56:20and as soon as the car moves,
00:56:21it actually pinches that fuel filler
00:56:23of the car.
00:56:24So, Michael Schumacher,
00:56:25you've got to be careful.
00:56:27It actually pinches that fuel filler
00:56:29pipe onto the car.
00:56:32Lucky to get it off,
00:56:33and he didn't take the fuel kit
00:56:34down the whole pit road.
00:56:38So, Mika Hakkinen has taken over the lead.
00:56:41Actually, Derek, we're told
00:56:42that the fuel man is clear,
00:56:44and the fellow who was
00:56:46bumped and knocked over there,
00:56:47the right rear tyre changer,
00:56:49who stands just to the left of the fueler.
00:56:52Nice dodge.
00:56:53Nice dodge.
00:56:54He looked like he was possibly
00:56:55trying to help the guy.
00:56:56Maybe with the fuel.
00:56:57Yep.
00:56:58And Barrichello is in.
00:56:59Ferrari's had to very quickly
00:57:01run back to the pit lane
00:57:03to service Barrichello's car.
00:57:05Well, the guy's lifting his head up.
00:57:06Here it is again.
00:57:07Here it is again.
00:57:08Yes, he was.
00:57:09Oh, yes, it is.
00:57:10He was trying to help
00:57:11pull the fuel.
00:57:12He was trying to help
00:57:13fuel the fuel thing off.
00:57:14Yeah, look at him.
00:57:15Oh, what a sad,
00:57:16such hard teamwork from these guys.
00:57:17He went down pretty hard,
00:57:18but it looked, fortunately,
00:57:19it looked like his leg
00:57:20did not get caught
00:57:21under the spinning wheel,
00:57:22which could have been...
00:57:23It looked like his arm
00:57:24sort of hit the wheel,
00:57:25and landed on his elbow
00:57:26or something.
00:57:27Who knows?
00:57:28Well, hopefully,
00:57:29he has just shaken up.
00:57:35This is going to be
00:57:36a very tense race
00:57:37with these two,
00:57:38Hakkinen and Schumacher,
00:57:39on such identical lap times
00:57:41they've been doing.
00:57:42Hakkinen, of course,
00:57:4324 second lead
00:57:44because he has not
00:57:45pit-stopped yet.
00:57:46He'll be trying to do
00:57:47some very quick laps now.
00:57:48He's got a clear bit of road.
00:57:49Michael, again,
00:57:50in his position,
00:57:51he'll be trying to get
00:57:52some very quick laps,
00:57:53but he's got a Minardi
00:57:54in front of him, I think,
00:57:55but he'll be trying to get
00:57:56some very quick laps in
00:57:57so that he remains
00:57:58in front of Hakkinen
00:57:59at the pit-stop
00:58:00because this will dictate,
00:58:01well, how the race runs
00:58:02until the next stop,
00:58:03fuel stop.
00:58:04And Barrichello's stop
00:58:05was 9.3 seconds.
00:58:06Here he is.
00:58:07And here's Mika.
00:58:08The race leader,
00:58:09Mika Hakkinen,
00:58:10and defending champion
00:58:11of this race,
00:58:12is in.
00:58:15So, they're the better stop
00:58:16they did with David.
00:58:19Looks very good to me.
00:58:21Yeah, superb stop,
00:58:227.8.
00:58:23Really depends.
00:58:24Now, let's see where
00:58:25Schumacher is on the pit,
00:58:26on the racetrack,
00:58:27as we come to cameras
00:58:28showing that shot.
00:58:29We'd rather see the pit lane
00:58:30and the racetrack
00:58:31at the same time.
00:58:32Hakkinen can go.
00:58:33Now, where's the Ferrari?
00:58:35There he comes.
00:58:36He's well ahead.
00:58:37Yeah, well, not well ahead,
00:58:38but ahead enough.
00:58:39Schumacher's got to contend
00:58:40with that Minardi,
00:58:41who will move out of the road
00:58:42fairly soon, one assumes.
00:58:43Mika will have to take
00:58:44a little gingerly
00:58:45for the first lap
00:58:46because the tyres will be
00:58:47up to a good temperature,
00:58:48but not the ultimate temperature.
00:58:51I believe that's Sinead
00:58:53directly in front
00:58:54of Schumacher.
00:58:56He's better get out
00:58:57of the road soon.
00:58:58Here he is.
00:58:59He's moving a bit now.
00:59:00That was a very generous move
00:59:01for him,
00:59:02but that's a long corner.
00:59:04Gets him a lot of trouble
00:59:05to get out wide there.
00:59:09Frentzen for Jordan,
00:59:10making his pit stop.
00:59:14And Josper Stoppen.
00:59:16I have to say,
00:59:17both that Mercedes team
00:59:18and the Ferrari team
00:59:19did such an excellent job
00:59:20pit stopping those two guys.
00:59:22Here are the pit times.
00:59:247.3 for Schumacher,
00:59:257.8 for Hacken
00:59:26and Barry Keller.
00:59:279.3 in Coulthard,
00:59:2811.6 when we saw
00:59:29that disaster
00:59:30when Mike Bordet
00:59:31couldn't quite get the gear.
00:59:33The Minardi holding up
00:59:34Hacken and just a bit there.
00:59:37But of course,
00:59:38that doesn't really tell
00:59:39the whole story.
00:59:40It's how long does it take
00:59:41to do the whole thing.
00:59:42Now that's Verstappen
00:59:43changing the steering wheel
00:59:44on his car.
00:59:48It's the in and out time
00:59:49It's the time it takes
00:59:50to come off the track,
00:59:51slow down to your
00:59:52restricted speed,
00:59:53go in the pits,
00:59:54then your 7.8 second stop,
00:59:55then get out.
01:00:03It's a very long stop
01:00:04for Verstappen.
01:00:06Aeros trying to get
01:00:07their season turned around.
01:00:09This is where these two drivers
01:00:10have got us thinking.
01:00:11Using their...
01:00:12Well, they use their brains anyway.
01:00:13That's why they're where they are.
01:00:14They're carting off
01:00:15the Ferrari mechanic,
01:00:16sadly,
01:00:17chief engineer.
01:00:18It wasn't...
01:00:20the English guy.
01:00:21Oh dear, I hope it wasn't.
01:00:23Nigel?
01:00:24Nigel Stepney,
01:00:25my old mechanic,
01:00:26who was with me
01:00:27when I raced at Jags,
01:00:28believe it or not,
01:00:29in the touring car
01:00:30years ago.
01:00:31He actually used to sweep
01:00:32the floor at Jaguars.
01:00:33And there he is
01:00:34ahead of Ferrari.
01:00:40That's...
01:00:41Apparently,
01:00:42Verstappen's climbed out.
01:00:43They've been unable
01:00:44to solve the problem
01:00:45on his Aeros.
01:00:46It was Nigel Stepney
01:00:47who had it confirmed.
01:00:51He's been...
01:00:52He obviously came along
01:00:53in the Ross Brawn,
01:00:54Rory Byrne,
01:00:55Michael Schumacher era
01:00:56to Ferrari,
01:00:57and has been a great support
01:00:58to that team.
01:01:00I've talked to him
01:01:01quite frequently
01:01:02and he says
01:01:03what a wonderful team
01:01:04it is to be with these days.
01:01:05It was Ferrari in the old days,
01:01:06but it was very difficult.
01:01:07Very different picture.
01:01:13Now, these two
01:01:14have really got to use their brains,
01:01:15as I was saying just before
01:01:16that incident,
01:01:17because they don't want
01:01:18to push it too hard
01:01:19because they'll...
01:01:20I think they're going
01:01:21to destroy the tyres.
01:01:22At the same time,
01:01:23Mick Hagman can't afford
01:01:24to get too close behind Michael
01:01:25because it's going to upset
01:01:26the balance of his car,
01:01:27the turbulent air,
01:01:28and therefore, of course,
01:01:29get the push problems
01:01:30and the stuffing
01:01:31of those front tyres.
01:01:34So the first round
01:01:35of pit stops
01:01:36are complete.
01:01:37And we'll be back
01:01:38with more coverage
01:01:39from the Grand Prix
01:01:40of Spain
01:01:41on Fox Sportsnet
01:01:42after...
01:01:44Well, the battle is joined.
01:01:45Mick Hagman is right
01:01:46on the tail
01:01:47of Michael Schumacher.
01:01:48There they are
01:01:49for the lead
01:01:50in the Spanish Grand Prix.
01:01:51Jasper Stappen
01:01:52made that pit stop
01:01:53with the arrows.
01:01:54They replaced
01:01:55the steering wheel.
01:01:56Apparently, he could still
01:01:57not select the gear
01:01:58or whatever the problem was.
01:01:59He has retired,
01:02:00joining Jacques Villeneuve,
01:02:03Pedro de la Rosa,
01:02:04Pedro Diniz,
01:02:05and Jean Alessi
01:02:06as out of the race.
01:02:14Schumacher and HÃ¥konen
01:02:15are that close.
01:02:16Remember that HÃ¥konen
01:02:17won the pole
01:02:18and this race
01:02:19the last two years,
01:02:20running six
01:02:21of the last eight years.
01:02:23The winner of the
01:02:24Spanish Grand Prix
01:02:25has been the world champion,
01:02:27including HÃ¥konen,
01:02:29the last two years in a row.
01:02:34I was just looking
01:02:35at the list here, Michael,
01:02:37and I wonder
01:02:38what had happened truly.
01:02:39But in fact,
01:02:40he's having clutch problems.
01:02:41That's why he's dropped
01:02:42down as far as 14th place.
01:02:44I wonder why it was,
01:02:45because he was running
01:02:46so well at the start.
01:02:4814th, just ahead
01:02:49of the minorities.
01:02:52So is this the race
01:02:53where Mika HÃ¥konen
01:02:54gets his groove back?
01:02:56Could well be,
01:02:57but Michael Schumacher
01:02:58has also driven
01:02:59a flawless race so far.
01:03:01In 1992,
01:03:03Nigel Mansell won this race
01:03:04and the championship
01:03:05for Williams.
01:03:06So did Alain Prost in 93.
01:03:08In 95, Michael Schumacher
01:03:09for Benetton
01:03:10won the Spanish Grand Prix
01:03:11and the title.
01:03:12Jacques Villeneuve in 97.
01:03:14Mika HÃ¥konen
01:03:15in his last two years.
01:03:16So six of the last eight years,
01:03:18the winner in Spain
01:03:20has been the world champion.
01:03:24Things look pretty even up today.
01:03:27It was gear selector trouble
01:03:28for Josef Verstappen
01:03:31that took his arrows
01:03:32from the race.
01:03:33Pedro de la Rosa
01:03:34was involved in that crash.
01:03:36Well, he caused the crash
01:03:37with Jean Alessi,
01:03:38taking them both out
01:03:39on the first lap.
01:03:40So both the arrows have retired.
01:03:53Well, Derek,
01:03:54it's about as close as you can get
01:03:55without them being
01:03:56one on top of the other.
01:03:57Yes, I admire the way
01:03:58Mika HÃ¥konen is sitting
01:03:59there that close to Michael.
01:04:00I know he can't afford
01:04:01to let him go,
01:04:02but the turbulent air
01:04:03must be just horrific there.
01:04:06We didn't mention
01:04:07the great Ayrton Senna, of course,
01:04:09who did win the Spanish Grand Prix,
01:04:10but it wasn't, I believe,
01:04:11on this circuit,
01:04:12because they've had this Grand Prix
01:04:14at five different circuits
01:04:15over the years.
01:04:20Senna, the winner in 86 and 89
01:04:23of the Spanish Grand Prix,
01:04:24but not here in Catalonia.
01:04:27I think it was at Harama, probably.
01:04:29And the Spanish Grand Prix
01:04:32was announced this morning
01:04:33The Spanish Grand Prix
01:04:34was announced this morning, Derek,
01:04:35will remain at the circuit to Catalonia
01:04:38through 2006.
01:04:39The contract with Formula One
01:04:41was extended this morning.
01:04:44Talking about that,
01:04:45Coral Silverstone's
01:04:46really getting a bashing
01:04:47for the conditions
01:04:48that they put everybody under
01:04:49and had to reimburse people
01:04:53£5 million worth,
01:04:54$8 million worth
01:04:55of their ticket money,
01:04:56which is pretty unfair.
01:04:58Well, not unfair,
01:04:59I think it's unfortunate,
01:05:00but at the same time,
01:05:01they're getting hauled over the coals
01:05:02by the FIA
01:05:03for allowing the weather to happen.
01:05:04Now, I don't think
01:05:05it's the worst weather
01:05:06they've had in April in England
01:05:07for 200 years,
01:05:08and I don't think you can blame
01:05:09the British Racing Drivers' Club
01:05:10for that, although I am,
01:05:11of course, a member of it
01:05:12and I have a vested interest.
01:05:13But at the same time,
01:05:15I think the weather is an act of God
01:05:16and we always used to have the race,
01:05:17as we all know, in July.
01:05:19We can get rain in July,
01:05:21but it's certainly not sudden
01:05:22from the winter's rains as well,
01:05:23which is what happens
01:05:24when you have it in April.
01:05:25In July, you've probably
01:05:26had a dry-ish summer.
01:05:28Well, when they get hauled
01:05:29before the FIA in June,
01:05:30I hope to bring the weatherman
01:05:31with them.
01:05:33You cannot dictate the weather.
01:05:35And also, in that area
01:05:36of the countryside,
01:05:37you cannot simply
01:05:39pave over, you know,
01:05:41all those beautiful fields
01:05:42that are used for parking
01:05:44one weekend a year.
01:05:45Well, you can't pave them
01:05:46any place in the world.
01:05:47If there had been any track
01:05:48in Europe that weekend,
01:05:49it would have been
01:05:50pretty darn wet.
01:05:53Well, Formula One
01:05:54had been called to task
01:05:55for allowing the race
01:05:56to be held in April,
01:05:57and hopefully next year
01:05:59it will move to a drier spot
01:06:01on the calendar.
01:06:04I think, Derek,
01:06:05the one thing that...
01:06:06We've seen this problem
01:06:07in the states,
01:06:08at circuits,
01:06:09and particularly
01:06:10the Texas Motor Speedway,
01:06:11with torrential rains.
01:06:12And the one thing
01:06:13they did there,
01:06:14which apparently
01:06:15was not done at Silverstone,
01:06:16was lining up remote car parks
01:06:18and buses
01:06:19to try to relieve
01:06:20the road congestion,
01:06:21because the first car
01:06:22that spins its wheels
01:06:23getting onto a muddy field
01:06:24backs up every car behind it,
01:06:26and then that's repeated,
01:06:28and eventually
01:06:29a lot of folks
01:06:30end up 15 miles
01:06:31from the racetrack
01:06:32saying, you know,
01:06:33I'm going back to the hotel
01:06:34and watch it,
01:06:35because I'm never
01:06:36going to get to the track.
01:06:37So a contingency plan
01:06:38I'm sure will be put in place
01:06:39before next year,
01:06:40and perhaps...
01:06:41I hope that's the focus
01:06:42of the discussion
01:06:43with the FIA,
01:06:44not who controls the weather,
01:06:45but what do we do
01:06:46just in case.
01:06:47Well, there aren't enough
01:06:48buses and coaches
01:06:49in the world
01:06:50to contend with
01:06:51the 200,000 people
01:06:52coming to the racetrack.
01:06:53I agree.
01:06:54And the little lanes
01:06:55around Silverstone
01:06:56are very small.
01:06:58Ralph there,
01:06:59very, very gingerly.
01:07:00That's David Coulthard.
01:07:02Now remember,
01:07:03Coulthard had trouble
01:07:04selecting the right gear
01:07:05to get out of the pits,
01:07:06and that's what finds him
01:07:07now behind
01:07:08Ralph Schumacher
01:07:09and Barrichello
01:07:10after the first pit stop.
01:07:12Yeah, which we know
01:07:13on this track,
01:07:14we've seen it,
01:07:15you can stay behind somebody,
01:07:16but getting by,
01:07:17boy, that is another problem.
01:07:20It's awful when you try
01:07:21to give overtaking areas
01:07:22before the race,
01:07:23but there really aren't
01:07:24any overtaking areas
01:07:25at this particular place.
01:07:28A very technical
01:07:29and physically demanding circuit,
01:07:32but one with very few
01:07:33overtaking opportunities.
01:07:36Well, it was Mika Hakkin
01:07:37that was a little bit concerned
01:07:38about the physical side
01:07:39of this circuit
01:07:40before the race,
01:07:41and he's putting up
01:07:42one of the greatest races
01:07:43I've seen him do
01:07:44in a long time
01:07:45to be that close
01:07:46to Schumacher
01:07:47in these conditions
01:07:48when, as I said,
01:07:49the turbulence behind him
01:07:50and the instability
01:07:51of his car
01:07:52must be very great
01:07:53compared to Michael's
01:07:54because he's getting
01:07:55that turbulence
01:07:56and he's getting
01:07:57that turbulent air
01:07:58which makes that,
01:07:59like 30% of the downforce
01:08:00on that front wing
01:08:01dissipates when you're
01:08:02behind another car.
01:08:04So he can't be easy
01:08:05in these long fast corners.
01:08:06This one perhaps
01:08:07isn't that fast,
01:08:08but there are many
01:08:09examples here
01:08:10of these fast corners.
01:08:12And it's a question
01:08:13that's been raised
01:08:14in virtually every form
01:08:15of motorsport in the world
01:08:16is now that the cars
01:08:17have become
01:08:18so aerodynamically efficient,
01:08:21how do you bring back
01:08:22passing when the cars
01:08:23rely so much
01:08:24on that aerodynamic
01:08:25downforce
01:08:26as much or more so
01:08:27than they rely
01:08:28on the mechanical grip
01:08:29of the tires
01:08:30through the corners?
01:08:31And I think really,
01:08:32Derek, only Kars
01:08:33has successfully
01:08:34addressed this problem
01:08:35with their Hanford device
01:08:36on the rear wing
01:08:37and other aerodynamic,
01:08:38let's say,
01:08:39disenhancements
01:08:40to get the cars
01:08:41where they can pull up
01:08:42and draft and pass
01:08:43the IRL cars.
01:08:45Also, there's a lot
01:08:46of passing in that circuit,
01:08:47but even in the
01:08:48full-bodied cars,
01:08:49NASCAR is looking
01:08:50at changes.
01:08:52The British Touring Car
01:08:53Championship has outlawed
01:08:54flat bottoms
01:08:55and penalized
01:08:56a couple of teams
01:08:57for cleaning up
01:08:58the undertrays
01:08:59of the cars
01:09:00to make them
01:09:01more aerodynamic
01:09:02because what folks
01:09:03really want is
01:09:04to see cars
01:09:05where a driver
01:09:06in a situation
01:09:07like Mika HÃ¥kon
01:09:08is in right now
01:09:09or here's Barrichello
01:09:10in the Ferrari
01:09:11behind Ralf Schumacher,
01:09:12for the driver
01:09:13to be able to
01:09:14exploit an advantage
01:09:15and have the opportunity
01:09:16to pull out and pass
01:09:17rather than be limited
01:09:18by the dirty air
01:09:19of the car
01:09:20in front of him.
01:09:22I believe,
01:09:23oh, let's just
01:09:24ride now
01:09:25with Barrichello.
01:09:47It's not cake, sir.
01:09:54Thanks, Sabadell.
01:10:05Along to the pit straight,
01:10:06a little bit of lifting
01:10:07off as he goes through there.
01:10:13Up to 195 miles an hour.
01:10:17Derek, you've got to wonder
01:10:18if perhaps some engine
01:10:19restrictions are
01:10:20in Formula 1's future.
01:10:21Remember, these cars here
01:10:22are a full second faster
01:10:24in qualifying
01:10:25than they were
01:10:26one year ago
01:10:27without any change
01:10:28in the specification
01:10:29of these cars
01:10:30as development increases.
01:10:34Well, Michael Schumacher
01:10:35leads Mika HÃ¥kon
01:10:36and by the thinnest
01:10:37of margins.
01:10:38Ralf Schumacher,
01:10:39Barrichello,
01:10:40Coulthard,
01:10:41and Jensen Button
01:10:42are the drivers
01:10:43in the points
01:10:44after 36 laps
01:10:45in the Spanish Grand Prix.
01:10:46That's the thinnest
01:10:47of leads
01:10:49over defending race
01:10:50champion Mika HÃ¥kon
01:10:51and there's Johnny Herbert
01:10:52who's had a...
01:10:53well, pretty awful day.
01:10:54He's 13th
01:10:55and his teammate
01:10:56Eddie Irvine
01:10:57is but 12th.
01:10:58Yes, I'm just wondering
01:10:59what the heck is happening
01:11:00to these Jags.
01:11:01They seem to be
01:11:02more miserable
01:11:03every time they go out
01:11:04and we don't seem
01:11:05to hear really
01:11:06what it is
01:11:07that they're having as problems
01:11:08because we understood
01:11:09the engine was...
01:11:10well, Eddie said
01:11:11the engine was
01:11:12as strong as anything
01:11:13out there.
01:11:14While we were away,
01:11:15Alexander Wurz
01:11:16made his second pit stop
01:11:18of the afternoon.
01:11:19His first came
01:11:20at lap 18.
01:11:22He was one
01:11:23of the first to pit
01:11:24in the first sequence
01:11:25of stops.
01:11:29And here is
01:11:30Johnny Herbert in.
01:11:34He was first in
01:11:35at lap 20.
01:11:36So it's his second stop.
01:11:41And it'll leave him
01:11:42some 25...
01:11:4426 laps to run.
01:11:46They do have a problem
01:11:47getting that fuel filler cap off.
01:11:48That fuel pipe off.
01:11:50Is that David?
01:11:52It is.
01:11:57Good stop.
01:11:58Hypothetical.
01:11:59His first stop,
01:12:00of course,
01:12:01was 11 seconds,
01:12:02but it was a very good
01:12:03stop by him,
01:12:04by his team.
01:12:05Well, he ran a very
01:12:06short segment there, Derek.
01:12:07Only 15 laps,
01:12:08hoping that a quick
01:12:09pit stop here
01:12:10would get him out
01:12:11ahead of
01:12:12Ralf Schumacher
01:12:13and Barrichello
01:12:14when they cycle through.
01:12:15Exactly.
01:12:16That is the thought.
01:12:19And there is activity
01:12:20at Williams.
01:12:23That will probably be
01:12:24for Jensen Button,
01:12:25who first came in
01:12:26on lap 19.
01:12:27What a scrap
01:12:28for the lead here.
01:12:30Remember that Schumacher
01:12:31is on the mediums,
01:12:32medium compound tyre,
01:12:33and Mika Hakkinen
01:12:34is on the softer tyre.
01:12:37It does seem like
01:12:38that the softer tyre
01:12:39does have tremendous grip.
01:12:42Now Ferrari is setting up
01:12:43last...
01:12:44on the first round.
01:12:45Michael Schumacher
01:12:46came in one lap
01:12:47before
01:12:48Barrichello.
01:12:49But this may be
01:12:50for Rubens.
01:13:02Now, who is it for?
01:13:03I would hate to say
01:13:04who I'd bring in first.
01:13:07But I would have thought
01:13:08that Schumacher
01:13:09needs to stay up
01:13:10as long as he can.
01:13:11Oh, there we go.
01:13:13Rubens and Ralf Schumacher
01:13:14are in.
01:13:16Now let's see if Ferrari
01:13:17can get a great pit stop.
01:13:18Let's see if Williams
01:13:19can do a great pit stop.
01:13:24Slow, slow, slow.
01:13:25What happened there?
01:13:29Oh, he didn't beat Ralf
01:13:30out of the pit lane.
01:13:31Not with a 9.8.
01:13:32You're not going to do that.
01:13:35Ralf had an 8.6,
01:13:36which is a second quicker.
01:13:38Well, Ralf had run
01:13:4017 laps on that.
01:13:42Oh, dear, dear, dear.
01:13:43Did you see that?
01:13:44Riding by that McLaren.
01:13:47Yep, Barrichello
01:13:48had only gone 15 laps.
01:13:57In fact, David Coulthard's
01:13:58in front.
01:14:03So that really quick stop
01:14:04that they did
01:14:05really worked for McLaren.
01:14:12And it looks as if
01:14:13they're not going to leave
01:14:14Hakkinen and Schumacher
01:14:15out there much longer.
01:14:16There's activity in both pits.
01:14:18Now that just shows you
01:14:19what pit strategy can work
01:14:20as Schumacher comes in.
01:14:21With David Coulthard,
01:14:23they look like Hakkinen
01:14:24coming in behind him.
01:14:28This is the decision,
01:14:29really and sadly,
01:14:30of what happens
01:14:31at the end of the race.
01:14:32Take too long for this fuel.
01:14:33Too long.
01:14:34That's it.
01:14:35He just lost the race.
01:14:36Ferrari just lost the race.
01:14:37The fuel filler man
01:14:38had not got the fuel tap on.
01:14:39Look at that.
01:14:41That's it.
01:14:42End of the race for Schumacher.
01:14:43As far as winning is concerned,
01:14:44Hakkinen has a major problem.
01:14:47They have the wheels on
01:14:48and the guy hasn't got
01:14:49the fuel filler pipe on.
01:14:57We don't know if it's
01:14:58the same refueling man
01:14:59because the refueling man
01:15:00supposedly wasn't injured.
01:15:01It was Nigel Stepney
01:15:02who is the chief mechanic
01:15:03on the team.
01:15:05But Nigel used to do
01:15:06all the refueling
01:15:07on the car.
01:15:08This weekend,
01:15:09he certainly wasn't
01:15:10and he was helping
01:15:11to take the pipe off
01:15:12and he got hurt.
01:15:14So Hakkinen is in first position
01:15:15and I don't think
01:15:16we're going to see much
01:15:17happening with Schumacher
01:15:18catching him up.
01:15:20He's certainly overtaken him.
01:15:21I hope the...
01:15:22There's Jenson Button.
01:15:24I hope the Spanish director
01:15:25gives us a replay
01:15:26of Schumacher's stop.
01:15:29I looked, I couldn't believe it.
01:15:30The guy was actually
01:15:31putting the refueling pipe on
01:15:32when they were lowering
01:15:33the car on the ground.
01:15:35I wonder, Derek,
01:15:36if the dry brake system
01:15:37that ensures a seal
01:15:38between the hose
01:15:40and the car
01:15:41might have been damaged
01:15:42as they were trying
01:15:43to yank it off
01:15:44the first time
01:15:45Schumacher stopped.
01:15:46It certainly makes you wonder.
01:15:47There's always,
01:15:48there's a strong possibility
01:15:49that would be the case.
01:15:50I have to agree with you.
01:15:52Now the thing is,
01:15:53is Schumacher far enough ahead
01:15:54in second place
01:15:55ahead of Coulthard.
01:15:57Coulthard was some
01:15:5829 seconds behind,
01:16:00so possibly he made it out
01:16:01ahead of him.
01:16:05Well, there are the
01:16:06pit stop times,
01:16:08first to second,
01:16:09and you see the disastrous
01:16:10pit stop for Michael
01:16:11and the big improvement
01:16:12for David Coulthard
01:16:14on that second stop.
01:16:15Remember, Coulthard's
01:16:16first stop was slower
01:16:17because he had trouble
01:16:18selecting first gear
01:16:20and getting out of the pit.
01:16:22It's a brilliant stop
01:16:23by McLaren, though.
01:16:246.5 seconds
01:16:25on Mika Hakkinen.
01:16:26That is outstanding.
01:16:2710 seconds between
01:16:28Hakkinen and Schumacher.
01:16:29I think that's,
01:16:30unfortunately,
01:16:31going to tow up
01:16:32the end of the race.
01:16:37The Hakkinen stopping
01:16:38at 23 laps to go.
01:16:40And now here it is
01:16:41once again.
01:16:42You see,
01:16:43they can't get the,
01:16:44can't get it seated.
01:16:45No, the car's lowered
01:16:46and they're still trying
01:16:47to get it on there.
01:16:48He mustn't let
01:16:49Michael go yet.
01:16:50He must be revving,
01:16:51he must be wired up
01:16:52for sound, Schumacher.
01:16:53He's wondering
01:16:54what is happening.
01:16:55He's looking in his mirror
01:16:56to look behind him
01:16:57now to see what they're doing.
01:17:00And it comes off.
01:17:01Off he goes.
01:17:02So instead of getting
01:17:03the fuel probe,
01:17:04the problem's getting
01:17:05the fuel probe out,
01:17:06the problem's getting it in
01:17:09for Michael Schumacher
01:17:10and it appears to have
01:17:11cost him this race.
01:17:14If Mika Hakkinen
01:17:15is able to
01:17:17continue to the finish
01:17:18without problems,
01:17:20that extra
01:17:2110 seconds in the pits
01:17:23is the difference
01:17:24between Hakkinen and Schumacher
01:17:25right now.
01:17:26Yeah, but it was
01:17:27tremendous work
01:17:28to get the fuel probe
01:17:29out of the way.
01:17:30Yeah, but it was
01:17:31tremendous work
01:17:32by McLaren,
01:17:33you have to say.
01:17:34Yes.
01:17:35On both their cars.
01:17:36They put them out
01:17:37ahead of the group.
01:17:38They put DC out
01:17:39ahead of his group
01:17:40and they put Mika
01:17:41out ahead of his group.
01:17:42Excellent bit of work.
01:17:43DC with just about
01:17:44three seconds
01:17:45on Ralf Schumacher now.
01:17:51And a second
01:17:52from Ralf DiBarrichello.
01:17:53Let's have a look
01:17:54at both of Michael Schumacher's
01:17:55pit stops.
01:17:57And we'll show you
01:17:58at the end of the first one.
01:17:59Watch the fueler
01:18:00on the left side.
01:18:02Now, Nigel Stepney,
01:18:03the crew chief of that car,
01:18:04is actually behind
01:18:05and he's trying to
01:18:06help pull it off.
01:18:07See him helping?
01:18:08And he's the one
01:18:09that falls over
01:18:10and drops really
01:18:11sort of with his chest
01:18:12onto the rear wheel.
01:18:13This is the second one.
01:18:14Now, Derek,
01:18:15Michael is pulling away
01:18:16before that fuel probe
01:18:17is fully released.
01:18:18So, I am
01:18:19I'm surmising
01:18:20that something
01:18:21bent either
01:18:22probably on the car
01:18:23because they would have
01:18:24had time to look at
01:18:25and inspect the probe.
01:18:27And Michael Schumacher,
01:18:28there you see
01:18:29Mika Hakkinen going by.
01:18:30And it took a long time
01:18:31to get that probe affixed
01:18:33to Schumacher's car
01:18:34and that is
01:18:35the ten second delay.
01:18:37Well, I've never seen Ferrari
01:18:38we haven't seen Ferrari
01:18:39in disarray for a long time
01:18:41but they are today.
01:18:43It's the first time
01:18:44for a long time
01:18:45we've had disarray
01:18:46in their pit stops.
01:18:47We're all human.
01:18:48Everybody's human
01:18:49and it happens.
01:18:50Heifeld can't get a gear
01:18:51by the look of it.
01:18:53Engine's running well.
01:18:54Doesn't seem to get
01:18:55any revs either.
01:18:56Strange, isn't it?
01:18:58There he is going off.
01:18:59That's the start
01:19:00of his problems.
01:19:01Makes it back around
01:19:02to the pits
01:19:03but trouble for Prost
01:19:05today as Alessi
01:19:06was knocked out of the race
01:19:07on lap one
01:19:09by De La Rosa.
01:19:10Probably with Prost
01:19:11every day.
01:19:12Sadly.
01:19:13Not having a good time
01:19:14at all this year.
01:19:15Who was tipped to
01:19:16perhaps, was it Peugeot?
01:19:17Was perhaps he buying
01:19:18that team?
01:19:19Well, they're talking
01:19:20about selling
01:19:21all their engines
01:19:22to a private owner
01:19:23Peugeot are
01:19:24for next year.
01:19:25But we don't know
01:19:26who that private owner is.
01:19:27No.
01:19:28And it's not necessarily
01:19:29they said it's not
01:19:30totally associated
01:19:31with Formula One.
01:19:32But they haven't said who.
01:19:33OK.
01:19:34Well, rumors of a buyer
01:19:36for Prost perhaps.
01:19:40Looking for the gap
01:19:41for Michael Schumacher
01:19:42back to David Coulthard.
01:19:43There it is.
01:19:443.3 seconds.
01:19:45And David Coulthard's
01:19:46catching his second
01:19:47in the last lap.
01:19:51So it's coming undone
01:19:53for Ferrari.
01:19:54They cannot lose the lead
01:19:55in either the driver
01:19:56or constructors
01:19:57championship today.
01:19:58But their great start
01:19:59to the season
01:20:00is kind of unraveling
01:20:02here in Spain.
01:20:03Mika Hakkinen,
01:20:04the defending race winner
01:20:05and world champion
01:20:06leads for West McLaren
01:20:08Mercedes.
01:20:09You're watching
01:20:10Formula One
01:20:11on Fox Sportsnet.
01:20:12As Jim Rome tells it
01:20:14like it is
01:20:15on the nightline
01:20:16of sports talk shows
01:20:17weeknights at 6.30
01:20:18and 11.30
01:20:19on Fox Sportsnet.
01:20:20The last word.
01:20:21Here we go.
01:20:22Michael Schumacher's
01:20:23been caught up
01:20:24by David Coulthard.
01:20:25And David was
01:20:26having a go.
01:20:27I'm sorry about that.
01:20:28I thought this was
01:20:29really a big
01:20:30overtaking maneuver
01:20:31going on here.
01:20:32David really tried
01:20:33and he'll have
01:20:34another go yet.
01:20:35Well, he very
01:20:36nearly was.
01:20:40Traffic ahead.
01:20:42David's been
01:20:43catching up
01:20:44in the second lap
01:20:45since the pit stop.
01:20:46And there he is.
01:20:47Nobody else
01:20:48is staying with him.
01:20:49I mean,
01:20:50Rubens is not there
01:20:51nor is Ralph.
01:20:52Of course,
01:20:53David was behind
01:20:54in the race.
01:21:01Well, Coulthard
01:21:02right to the edge
01:21:03of the rumble strip.
01:21:04Using up every bit
01:21:05of asphalt
01:21:06and then some.
01:21:07Having a little
01:21:08peak there.
01:21:09But we saw,
01:21:10of course,
01:21:11David do an
01:21:12outstanding maneuver
01:21:13overtaking on Rubens
01:21:14Barrichello
01:21:15at the British Grand Prix
01:21:16two weeks ago.
01:21:17Although Rubens
01:21:18did have some problems
01:21:19at that point
01:21:20with the hydraulic
01:21:21system on his car
01:21:22and it came out
01:21:23of the outside
01:21:24by David
01:21:25at Stowe Corner.
01:21:26And he could do
01:21:27a similar thing
01:21:28on Michael,
01:21:29but I don't think
01:21:30he might find it
01:21:31quite as easy.
01:21:32But this is where
01:21:33David on this
01:21:34mile-long straight
01:21:35made such a
01:21:36brilliant move
01:21:37last time.
01:21:38Didn't appear to get
01:21:39off that last corner
01:21:40as well this time
01:21:41or as close to Michael.
01:21:42Here he goes.
01:21:43And Michael,
01:21:44yes,
01:21:45Michael pulled
01:21:46way over off line.
01:21:47Yeah,
01:21:48absolutely.
01:21:49He could do
01:21:50nothing about it.
01:21:51What a fine bit
01:21:52to say.
01:21:53It was so similar
01:21:54to the one
01:21:55that happened
01:21:56at Stowe Corner
01:21:57that I talked about
01:21:58with Rubens
01:21:59the last race.
01:22:00Because you don't
01:22:01normally overtake
01:22:02somebody around
01:22:03the outside,
01:22:04but here we go again.
01:22:05Let's watch it.
01:22:06Did Michael
01:22:07drive way off line?
01:22:08Well,
01:22:09it's a weird way
01:22:10to do it.
01:22:11He certainly did,
01:22:12but I don't know
01:22:13what he thought
01:22:14he was going to find
01:22:15over there.
01:22:16He thought he was
01:22:17going to get better
01:22:18grip,
01:22:19but he certainly
01:22:20did nothing to
01:22:21the way he pulled
01:22:22over and let David
01:22:23through.
01:22:24Well,
01:22:25I think he sort of did.
01:22:26He wasn't making it
01:22:27that easy,
01:22:28but at the end of it
01:22:29he did.
01:22:30Yep.
01:22:31But he could have
01:22:32soothed it
01:22:33and gone down
01:22:34the inside
01:22:35if he'd wanted to.
01:22:36That's a very
01:22:37good 6th place.
01:22:38Another fine race
01:22:39by young Jenson.
01:22:40Let's ride
01:22:41with Rubens.
01:22:42Ralf Schumacher
01:22:43in front,
01:22:44still looking
01:22:45at wheels.
01:22:47Now this group
01:22:48is 6 seconds
01:22:49behind Michael Schumacher.
01:23:17Nearly every corner
01:23:18Ralf locks up a left
01:23:19or right front wheel.
01:23:20He's been doing it
01:23:21the whole race.
01:23:22I'm surprised
01:23:23he's getting away with it.
01:23:41Oh,
01:23:42he's doing it again.
01:23:43But of course
01:23:44then he loses out
01:23:45on the turn in
01:23:46he required,
01:23:47but Rubens can do
01:23:48nothing about it.
01:23:49That,
01:23:50Williams,
01:23:51look at the engine
01:23:52of the car,
01:23:53that BMW engine.
01:24:04That BMW engine
01:24:05it has runs.
01:24:08Locking it all up again.
01:24:10And then you see
01:24:11he loses out
01:24:12as he turns in.
01:24:13Look at him
01:24:14in the corner.
01:24:15Yeah,
01:24:16I'm surprised
01:24:17he's got any,
01:24:18actually,
01:24:19any front tires
01:24:20left at all.
01:24:21Derek
01:24:22at Silverstone
01:24:23with Barrichello
01:24:24qualifying on pole
01:24:25and incidentally
01:24:26the first
01:24:27Ferrari teammate
01:24:28to Michael Schumacher
01:24:29to qualify on pole
01:24:30in a race
01:24:31in which Michael
01:24:32ran.
01:24:33We thought
01:24:34he might
01:24:35penalty
01:24:36on Makazi,
01:24:3710 seconds
01:24:38for blocking
01:24:39the pole.
01:24:40We thought
01:24:41that Rubens
01:24:42might break his
01:24:43through email.
01:24:44We've got
01:24:45you pointed out
01:24:46correctly
01:24:47it was a cricket term
01:24:48but I didn't
01:24:49catch it
01:24:50because here
01:24:51in the US
01:24:52we call a string of
01:24:53zeros on the
01:24:54scoreboard goose eggs
01:24:55and in England
01:24:56they're duck eggs
01:24:57so if you break
01:24:58your duck
01:24:59if you break
01:25:00the string of
01:25:01duck eggs
01:25:02and score
01:25:03and get a number
01:25:04up on the board
01:25:05so hoping for
01:25:06Rubens to break
01:25:07his duck
01:25:08it's breaking
01:25:09a duck egg
01:25:10as opposed to
01:25:11a goose egg.
01:25:12The reason is
01:25:13because it's a
01:25:14similar shape
01:25:15and it's written
01:25:16down.
01:25:17The chicken egg
01:25:18or a duck egg
01:25:19or a goose egg
01:25:20is oval
01:25:21rather like an O
01:25:22hence they went
01:25:23for zero
01:25:24and a duck egg.
01:25:25Wasn't that
01:25:26boring really?
01:25:27What an unnecessary
01:25:28bit of trivia.
01:25:29Well,
01:25:30sure filled up
01:25:31a lot of bandwidth
01:25:32on our email.
01:25:33Look at them
01:25:34they're all
01:25:35over the back
01:25:36of Michael.
01:25:37You see that?
01:25:38Look,
01:25:39Schumacher's
01:25:40slaying right there.
01:25:41And here comes
01:25:42Rubens right up
01:25:43his tailpipe.
01:25:44Oh!
01:25:45Whoa!
01:25:46Rubens!
01:25:47What a pass!
01:25:48What a move!
01:25:49Thanks brother
01:25:50you'll see
01:25:51you're a real
01:25:52brother for that one.
01:25:53And Barrichello
01:25:54just did a
01:25:55shooey double.
01:25:56Shooey's going
01:25:57in the pits.
01:25:58Well,
01:25:59I mean,
01:26:00he let D.C.
01:26:01through something
01:26:02obviously wrong
01:26:03with Michael's car
01:26:04if he wasn't
01:26:05going to fight
01:26:06the McLaren
01:26:07and now
01:26:08let's see.
01:26:09Something gear wise?
01:26:10He's going to put
01:26:11tires on it
01:26:12and perhaps
01:26:13the choice
01:26:14of tire
01:26:15for Michael Schumacher
01:26:16is really wrong.
01:26:17Has been his undoing.
01:26:18Perhaps.
01:26:19Remember,
01:26:20he is on the medium
01:26:21the arrows started
01:26:22on the medium
01:26:23everyone else
01:26:24is on the soft compound.
01:26:25Well,
01:26:26it certainly seems
01:26:27it wasn't the best move
01:26:28but I'm sure
01:26:29they thought about it
01:26:30long and hard
01:26:31before they made
01:26:32that decision.
01:26:33Well,
01:26:34give Rubens
01:26:35the move of the season.
01:26:36It may not break his duck
01:26:37but it certainly
01:26:38should get him
01:26:39the win.
01:26:42And things stay
01:26:43as they are.
01:26:44Both Williams
01:26:45will be in the points
01:26:46for the third time
01:26:47in five races.
01:26:48Last year,
01:26:49Williams didn't
01:26:50score both cars
01:26:51in the points
01:26:52the whole season.
01:26:53Wow,
01:26:54what a turnaround.
01:26:58What an inspired
01:26:59bit of driving
01:27:00by Rubens.
01:27:01Let's see it
01:27:02from Michael's view.
01:27:03Or from Rubens' view
01:27:04rather.
01:27:07Life is just
01:27:08very, very tight
01:27:09there
01:27:10for his brother,
01:27:11Ralph.
01:27:12Come to the next corner
01:27:13and Michael just
01:27:14pushes him out wide.
01:27:15Michael doesn't want
01:27:16to lose more
01:27:17than he has to.
01:27:18See a boy
01:27:19I've got.
01:27:20I mean,
01:27:21it would have been
01:27:22terrible if Michael
01:27:23had pulled back
01:27:24another shot.
01:27:25Oh, damn.
01:27:26Because Ralph,
01:27:27as you've seen,
01:27:28has had this
01:27:29locking up front wheels
01:27:30so therefore
01:27:31he didn't turn in
01:27:32quite as tight
01:27:33as he wanted to.
01:27:34I remember last week
01:27:35in Peter's interview
01:27:36with the two Schumacher
01:27:37wheels there.
01:27:38That was very close.
01:27:39Don't see too much
01:27:40of that these days.
01:27:41Not at that level.
01:27:42They were very close
01:27:43to interlocking wheels,
01:27:44the Schumacher brothers.
01:27:49They're smiling
01:27:50there at McLaren's
01:27:51and well,
01:27:52they should be.
01:27:55He gets run off
01:27:56and hidden now.
01:27:58And Michael comes
01:27:59back on track
01:28:00in fifth place.
01:28:01So,
01:28:02once
01:28:03Barrichello and
01:28:04Ralph Schumacher
01:28:05made it past him,
01:28:06there was plenty
01:28:07of a gap on
01:28:08Jensen Butt
01:28:09to make that stop
01:28:10for tires
01:28:11and come back out.
01:28:12So, quickly
01:28:13Ferrari brought him in.
01:28:17Full guard
01:28:18lacks 22 seconds
01:28:19to the race leader
01:28:20and defending champion
01:28:21Hockenheim.
01:28:228.6 back
01:28:23to Rubens Barrichello
01:28:27who has
01:28:28Ralph Schumacher
01:28:29right with him.
01:28:30He's easing away
01:28:31bit by bit from him
01:28:32though,
01:28:33Michael.
01:28:351.8 seconds
01:28:38is the difference
01:28:39and then Michael
01:28:40should be in fifth
01:28:41with about 20 seconds
01:28:42in the pit lane
01:28:43and there's the
01:28:44differential.
01:28:48Now, that will leave him
01:28:49still 11 seconds up
01:28:50on Jensen Butt
01:28:51who's in the final
01:28:52point position
01:28:53followed by Frentzen,
01:28:55Mika Salo in eighth,
01:28:56Riccardo Zonta
01:28:57and Fisichella.
01:28:58Here's another look at it.
01:29:00There wasn't too much
01:29:01room there, was there?
01:29:02Their wheels are actually
01:29:03would have been totally
01:29:04interlocked if they didn't
01:29:05have that body
01:29:06along the side of the car,
01:29:07the form of the structure.
01:29:12Well, in mid-corner
01:29:13the two brothers
01:29:14not wishing to run
01:29:15into one another
01:29:16took off quite a bit
01:29:17of speed and momentum
01:29:18and Barrichello
01:29:19capitalized,
01:29:20timed it beautifully
01:29:21and jumped to third place.
01:29:23So, there are the standings
01:29:24with 13 laps to go.
01:29:25Mika Hockenheim,
01:29:26your race leader.
01:29:27You're watching
01:29:28Formula One
01:29:29on Fox Sports Net.
01:29:31Here's your leader,
01:29:32Mika Hockenheim.
01:29:33Brilliant pit strategy
01:29:34by McLaren
01:29:35and an inspired drive
01:29:36that put him 22 seconds
01:29:38ahead of his teammate.
01:29:40To talk about inspired drives,
01:29:41David Coulthard
01:29:42coming off a plane crash
01:29:44Tuesday in which
01:29:46it is miraculous
01:29:47that he was able
01:29:48to walk away
01:29:49along with his fiancé
01:29:50and trainer
01:29:51from a Learjet crash
01:29:53in France
01:29:54that claimed the lives
01:29:56of both pilots.
01:29:58Coulthard walked away
01:29:59and came here to Spain
01:30:01ready to race
01:30:02and, Derek,
01:30:03he's just turned in
01:30:04a tremendous performance.
01:30:05Yes, it has.
01:30:06We, you know,
01:30:07we like to believe
01:30:08he's got these bruised ribs
01:30:09and he is certainly now
01:30:10he's got free of that
01:30:11Ralf Schumacher
01:30:12Rubens Barrichello group.
01:30:13He's turned in some
01:30:14very, very quick laps
01:30:15doing a superb job.
01:30:16We saw him overtake
01:30:17Michael Schumacher
01:30:18but it's pretty obvious
01:30:19Michael had a problem
01:30:20because two laps later
01:30:21he went in the pits
01:30:22but, nonetheless,
01:30:23David is doing a sterling job
01:30:24out there
01:30:25when you consider
01:30:26all the conditions.
01:30:27And 10 laps to go
01:30:28and nothing much
01:30:29he'll do about catching
01:30:30Mika Hakkinen
01:30:31but this will, in fact,
01:30:32be Mika Hakkinen
01:30:33he won in 1998
01:30:34he won in 2000
01:30:35he had a win in 2001
01:30:36quite an amazing result
01:30:37for Mika Hakkinen
01:30:38three-time winners also
01:30:39Alan Prost,
01:30:40Nigel Mantle
01:30:41and Jackie Stewart.
01:30:46Well, Mika Hakkinen
01:30:47again, a tremendous performance
01:30:49for Hakkinen
01:30:50and this will certainly
01:30:51move him up
01:30:52in the World Championship
01:30:53you see that Michael Schumacher
01:30:54is on position
01:30:55to salvage two points
01:30:56from the day.
01:31:01And Ferrari,
01:31:02Rubens Barrichello
01:31:03in third
01:31:04to add to that total
01:31:05of 43
01:31:06and they will lead
01:31:07the Constructors' Championship
01:31:08heading for the Nurburgring.
01:31:31Rubens overtaking
01:31:32one of the Jags
01:31:33he's going very slowly there
01:31:34Yeah, gave him
01:31:35a nice little wave
01:31:36and you saw
01:31:37on the onboard camera
01:31:38a little bit of
01:31:39maybe a little bit of fluid
01:31:40from the Jag ahead.
01:31:41Well, it certainly
01:31:42was going slowly,
01:31:43wasn't it?
01:32:0170 miles an hour there.
01:32:04Looks like he's stopped.
01:32:05Yep.
01:32:06Back up through this
01:32:07turn at 140.
01:32:08The next one
01:32:09onto the straight.
01:32:11160.
01:32:31195.
01:32:32Right at the end there
01:32:33before he breaks.
01:32:38Coulthard doing some
01:32:39quick laps there.
01:32:45So Micah Hawkins
01:32:46led 20 of the 56 laps.
01:32:47We've had three lead changes
01:32:50due to the timing
01:32:51of pit stops.
01:32:5217 of the 22 starters
01:32:53remain on track.
01:32:54Gone are
01:32:56Jean Alessi,
01:32:57Pedro Diniz,
01:32:58Pedro de la Rosa,
01:32:59Chris Verstappen,
01:33:00and Jack Villeneuve.
01:33:03Nick Heidfeld is in
01:33:06for what I believe
01:33:07is his third stop.
01:33:14Well, he'll be pleased
01:33:15to get to the end of this race.
01:33:16He hasn't seen too many
01:33:17checkered flags.
01:33:30Marichello did not have
01:33:31a great start.
01:33:32He got hit with a start
01:33:33by Ralph Schumacher
01:33:36and also lost a spot
01:33:37to David Coulthard,
01:33:38but as the fortunes
01:33:40of the race unfolded,
01:33:41here he sits in third,
01:33:43right where he started
01:33:44the day,
01:33:45but now behind
01:33:46the two McLarens
01:33:47rather than his teammate
01:33:48Micah Hawkins.
01:33:50He's behind Hawkins
01:33:51and Coulthard.
01:33:53Eight laps to go
01:33:54and he's behind
01:33:55one of the Jags.
01:33:57Yeah, this will be
01:33:58Eddie Irvine
01:33:59and he overlapped
01:34:00Johnny Herbert earlier.
01:34:04Irvine in 12th place.
01:34:07Everyone from ninth
01:34:08on back is a lap down.
01:34:09That's Zonta,
01:34:10Fisichella,
01:34:11Wurz, Irvine,
01:34:12Herbert,
01:34:13Jarno, Trulli,
01:34:14Marc Genet,
01:34:15and then Mazzuccani
01:34:16two laps down
01:34:17and Heidfeld.
01:34:23I'll tell you what,
01:34:24when you're in one
01:34:25of these lesser teams,
01:34:26it's such an achievement
01:34:27to finish a Grand Prix.
01:34:28We all get excited
01:34:29about the guys at the front,
01:34:30but I tell you,
01:34:31they are so elated
01:34:32just to finish a Grand Prix
01:34:33when they've had some
01:34:34pretty poor races
01:34:35leading up to it.
01:34:41You see Rubens
01:34:42right behind Irvine.
01:34:45Must be a tough picture
01:34:46for Eddie Irvine
01:34:47to look in his mirror
01:34:48and see the car he drove
01:34:49last year coming up
01:34:50to lap him.
01:34:51Here's an interesting comment.
01:34:52Ross Braun said to
01:34:53Barry Keller the other day,
01:34:54you've done more
01:34:55for Ferrari in one year
01:34:56than Irvine did
01:34:57in the last four,
01:34:58but I don't quite know
01:34:59what he meant by that.
01:35:00I guess he's putting
01:35:01a lot of input
01:35:02into the team.
01:35:05And of course,
01:35:06we know that Eddie
01:35:07is one of those people
01:35:08that does start to enjoy life
01:35:09with all the best things
01:35:10in life can offer.
01:35:11He's got them.
01:35:12Don't blame him either.
01:35:13Not that there's anything
01:35:14wrong with that.
01:35:15I didn't say there was.
01:35:16No.
01:35:17I try,
01:35:18but I never earn the money.
01:35:19Right.
01:35:24Barry Keller now
01:35:25making 13 and a half
01:35:26back from Kulkarn.
01:35:28So losing touch
01:35:29with the two McLarens
01:35:30just a bit.
01:35:31Now,
01:35:32Ralph Schumacher
01:35:33last time by
01:35:34was only 4.2 seconds
01:35:35behind Rubens.
01:35:37And that gap
01:35:38had been increasing
01:35:39fractionally each lap.
01:35:46And Hockenden's lead
01:35:47pretty stable.
01:35:48It was 22 seconds
01:35:49about three laps ago,
01:35:50but that's pretty much stable
01:35:51given race traffic.
01:35:5413 back to Barrichello
01:35:56in third.
01:35:58And now it's only
01:35:593.7 back to
01:36:01Ralph Schumacher.
01:36:03So he is
01:36:04closing the gap
01:36:05on Barrichello.
01:36:10Incredible driving.
01:36:11Ralph drove so well
01:36:12last year in that
01:36:13awful Williams car
01:36:14that they ran last year.
01:36:15And here he is
01:36:16doing an outstanding job.
01:36:17I mean, he really is
01:36:18sort of doing
01:36:19what Jack Villeneuve
01:36:20has been doing this season.
01:36:21Doing outstanding jobs
01:36:22with the car.
01:36:23We know it's good,
01:36:24but still doing
01:36:25a stirring job
01:36:26right up at the front.
01:36:27Jack Villeneuve
01:36:28has been doing the same.
01:36:29And, of course,
01:36:30he's had three fails.
01:36:31He had a fourth
01:36:32and a fifth,
01:36:33and now he's had
01:36:34three non-finishes.
01:36:35But he's been very strong
01:36:36in the other two.
01:36:37In fact,
01:36:38in all the races
01:36:39until such time
01:36:40as things let him down.
01:36:43One of the best battles
01:36:44on the racetrack
01:36:45was Heinz-Errol Frentzen
01:36:46and Mika Salo
01:36:47for seventh place.
01:36:48They were just a couple
01:36:49of car lengths apart,
01:36:50but now
01:36:51Salo has been overlapped
01:36:52by Mika Hocken,
01:36:53and that's dropped him
01:36:54a bit back
01:36:55from Frentzen.
01:36:56So seven cars
01:36:57remain on the lead lap.
01:36:58These six
01:36:59and Heinz-Errol Frentzen
01:37:00will be back
01:37:01to Catalunya
01:37:02in a moment.
01:37:07...Circuit de Catalunya,
01:37:08Barcelona.
01:37:09Johnny Herbert
01:37:10has just made
01:37:11his third stop of the day.
01:37:14Not a particularly
01:37:15great result for Jaguar.
01:37:16The leaping cat
01:37:17may become
01:37:18the sleeping cat
01:37:19here in Formula 1.
01:37:21It's been a very tough day
01:37:22for both
01:37:23Eddie Irvine
01:37:24and Johnny Herbert
01:37:25running 12th and 14th.
01:37:27And Herbert
01:37:28stopping at lap 20,
01:37:29lap 39,
01:37:30and at lap 61,
01:37:31Derek,
01:37:32just four laps
01:37:33from the finish.
01:37:34Tough day.
01:37:35Very tough for Jags.
01:37:36I wouldn't be
01:37:37at all impressed
01:37:38with the result
01:37:39if I was any part
01:37:40of that empire
01:37:41at the moment,
01:37:42but then it is
01:37:43early days for them
01:37:44although I still feel
01:37:45that they took over
01:37:46the Ford team
01:37:47of last year
01:37:48with Jackie Stewart
01:37:49and they were running
01:37:50reasonably quite well.
01:37:51So I don't see
01:37:52what's happened to them
01:37:53in the medium
01:37:54in the time since then.
01:37:55You could have made
01:37:56a claim for Jaguar
01:37:57being, you know,
01:37:58the fourth best team
01:37:59in the paddock
01:38:00behind McLaren,
01:38:01Ferrari and Jordan
01:38:02last year
01:38:03or perhaps fourth equal
01:38:04but, boy,
01:38:05today,
01:38:06this year...
01:38:07They've got pretty well
01:38:08as big a budget
01:38:09as anybody out there
01:38:10or big as a...
01:38:11a bigger sort of...
01:38:12They've just been
01:38:13given the go-ahead
01:38:14for a $49 million
01:38:15wind tunnel
01:38:16to go up in England.
01:38:17That is major
01:38:18budgetary stuff.
01:38:19I know it lasts
01:38:20a long time
01:38:21but they mean business.
01:38:22I'm sure they will
01:38:23but, at the moment,
01:38:24they're not looking
01:38:25that presentable.
01:38:26Minardi in again.
01:38:27Yep, this is Genet.
01:38:28Since it's his home Grand Prix,
01:38:29we're seeing a lot of him today
01:38:30and this is also
01:38:31his third stop
01:38:32and it comes with
01:38:33just three laps to go.
01:38:34One of the quickest stops
01:38:35he's ever made,
01:38:36I know.
01:38:37How much fuel
01:38:38do you need
01:38:39for three laps?
01:38:40Six seconds.
01:38:41Makes you wonder
01:38:42where they could have
01:38:43put a bigger
01:38:44wind tunnel
01:38:46Makes you wonder
01:38:47where they could have
01:38:48put a bit more
01:38:49in last time.
01:38:50Well, his first stop
01:38:51was at lap 18.
01:38:52He was one of
01:38:53the three that
01:38:54stopped earliest.
01:38:55Heidfeld,
01:38:56Wurz,
01:38:57and Genet.
01:38:58What a splendid
01:38:59bit of driving
01:39:00by Mika Hakkinen.
01:39:01Absolutely thoughtless,
01:39:02superb piece of driving.
01:39:03Pressurised Michael
01:39:04all the time.
01:39:05Probably knew
01:39:06if he pressurised him
01:39:07enough,
01:39:08his tyres would go away.
01:39:09If you recollect
01:39:10the very first lap
01:39:11of the race,
01:39:12we had that shot
01:39:13you saw of Hakkinen
01:39:14and Schumacher
01:39:15actually with the tail out
01:39:16getting it sideways.
01:39:17And I thought,
01:39:18boy, you get the tail out
01:39:19at this time of the race,
01:39:20what's going to happen
01:39:21later on when the tyres
01:39:22do get used up?
01:39:23But Hakkinen
01:39:24has driven an inspired race
01:39:25and he needed it
01:39:26because, as we said
01:39:27at the beginning of the show,
01:39:28what's he been doing
01:39:29all year?
01:39:32Well, he'll come out
01:39:33of this with ten points,
01:39:34but he'll still trail
01:39:35Michael Schumacher badly.
01:39:36And McLaren getting off
01:39:38to their worst start
01:39:39in many a season
01:39:40in both the Constructors
01:39:41and the Drivers' Championships.
01:39:44It is a circuit
01:39:45that we expect the McLaren
01:39:46to go so well on
01:39:47because it's got
01:39:48virtually every type
01:39:49of corner you could wish for.
01:39:50It's got the very
01:39:51high-speed corners,
01:39:52it's got bumpy
01:39:53entrances to corners,
01:39:54it's got two slow-speed
01:39:55corners,
01:39:56and it is the best
01:39:57all-round circuit
01:39:58there is probably
01:39:59in the world.
01:40:00And the McLaren
01:40:01always goes well here
01:40:02because it is such
01:40:03a good compromised car.
01:40:04Derek, the final point
01:40:05in this race
01:40:06is now in jeopardy.
01:40:07Jenson Button
01:40:08is in sixth place,
01:40:09but they're reporting
01:40:10engine problems.
01:40:11There he is.
01:40:12Ooh, yes.
01:40:13That's more than
01:40:14just a little engine problem.
01:40:15That is very sad
01:40:16having got so close.
01:40:17Let's hope Ralph
01:40:18can keep running
01:40:19at this stage,
01:40:20but Jenson would have
01:40:21been with a point there.
01:40:22He's pulling off.
01:40:23That is it for Jenson Button.
01:40:24Another fine outing
01:40:25by that young man
01:40:26so early in his career.
01:40:27Tremendous drive.
01:40:28And it elevates
01:40:29Frentzen
01:40:30to sixth place.
01:40:31Eddie Jordan
01:40:32didn't think
01:40:33he'd get a point today.
01:40:34Nope.
01:40:35Stay with us
01:40:36after the checkered flag,
01:40:37trophy presentation,
01:40:38champagne spray,
01:40:39and we'll hear
01:40:40from the podium finishers.
01:40:42In the unilateral
01:40:43press conference.
01:40:48And the finish flags fly
01:40:50here in Spain
01:40:51for Mika Hakkinen.
01:40:52There's some breeze
01:40:53up there on that hill.
01:40:54Quite.
01:41:01So Frentzen moves up to sixth
01:41:02with the retirement
01:41:03of Jenson Button.
01:41:05Mika Salo to seventh.
01:41:06Ricardo's on to the eighth.
01:41:08Fisichella to ninth.
01:41:10Fertz to tenth.
01:41:11Another day of slogging around
01:41:13for the Benettons.
01:41:14Eddie Irvine
01:41:15a lackluster eleventh.
01:41:16Jarno Trulli is twelfth.
01:41:19And Johnny Herbert
01:41:20will move to thirteenth.
01:41:21Marc Genet and Matsukane
01:41:23and Heitzel
01:41:24are the others still running.
01:41:31Well the points
01:41:32will get ever closer
01:41:33as we look forward
01:41:34to the Nürburgring
01:41:35in two weeks.
01:41:36And this will be
01:41:37the first
01:41:38Hakkinen's
01:41:39Kulthard
01:41:40one-two finish
01:41:41with Mika winning
01:41:42and David second
01:41:43since Hungary
01:41:44last August.
01:41:49And for the third
01:41:50straight year
01:41:51Mika Hakkinen
01:41:52to take checkered flag
01:41:53in Spain
01:41:54with D.C.
01:41:56finishing in second.
01:42:02The last driver
01:42:03to win
01:42:04three straight
01:42:05Spanish Grands Prix
01:42:07Jackie Stewart
01:42:081969 through 71.
01:42:14You have to admit
01:42:15that is very very impressive
01:42:16for Mika Hakkinen
01:42:17as a driver
01:42:18and of course
01:42:19for McLaren Mercedes.
01:42:20When you remember
01:42:21just the torrid time
01:42:22McLaren were having
01:42:23with that Mercedes engine
01:42:24in the first season or two
01:42:25trying to get it to work
01:42:26and we all thought
01:42:27what's happened to Ron Dennis?
01:42:28Much the same
01:42:29as we've been saying
01:42:30the last two years.
01:42:31What's happened to Frank Williams?
01:42:32But look at them all
01:42:33all coming back
01:42:34that German technology
01:42:35really really coming to form.
01:42:37Albeit
01:42:38let's say
01:42:39the McLaren engines
01:42:40are built by
01:42:41Mary Ilion
01:42:42at Ilmore in Britain.
01:42:44Well Mika Hakkinen
01:42:45is going to join
01:42:46Alain Prost
01:42:47Nigel Mansell
01:42:48and Jackie Stewart
01:42:49as a three time winner
01:42:51of the Spanish Grand Prix.
01:42:53Hakkinen
01:42:54scores his first
01:42:55of the season.
01:42:58David Coulthard
01:42:59is some 17 seconds back.
01:43:02Here's Coulthard
01:43:03to finish second.
01:43:0814 seconds back
01:43:09of Coulthard
01:43:10is Rubens Barrichello
01:43:12who has 7 seconds
01:43:13on Ralf Schumacher
01:43:15who has 10
01:43:16on his older brother.
01:43:19So here's Rubens
01:43:20for third.
01:43:21Well that was a great
01:43:22salvage job by Rubens
01:43:23particularly that
01:43:24overtaking maneuver
01:43:25and Ferrari had
01:43:26pretty poor pit stop
01:43:27work there
01:43:28but that was actually
01:43:29his heir here
01:43:30Mika Hakkinen's wife.
01:43:34But it was an
01:43:35outstanding bit of work
01:43:36by the McLaren crew
01:43:37in their pit stops
01:43:38and of course
01:43:39by the two drivers.
01:43:40Excellent work.
01:43:41Ralf Schumacher
01:43:42will come home
01:43:43for Michael Schumacher
01:43:46in fifth.
01:43:49He'll be very disappointed
01:43:50he'll be doing a lot
01:43:51of analyzing
01:43:52when they get back.
01:43:53Yes.
01:43:54And remember Michael
01:43:55ran this race
01:43:56on the medium compound
01:43:57tires
01:43:58while all of his
01:43:59contenders
01:44:00were on the soft
01:44:01compound.
01:44:02Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:44:03the final point
01:44:04and he is the last
01:44:05car to finish
01:44:06on the lead lap.
01:44:08The finish flags
01:44:09are in the wind
01:44:10and we'll be back
01:44:11for the celebrating
01:44:14after this.

01:44:35tardy appearance
01:44:36but has the right flag
01:44:37in hand
01:44:38to salute
01:44:39Mika Hakkinen's
01:44:40victory

01:44:43consecutive triumph
01:44:44in this race.

01:44:50by 16 seconds.

01:45:49of course
01:45:50as one would expect

01:47:36That's a very exuberant-looking Mika Hakkinen, and many of his victory ceremonies are quite
01:47:57subdued-looking, but he really looks excited as he gets the hardware from the President
01:48:02of Catalonia.
01:48:03The Honourable Jordi Pujol, difficult name, that one.
01:48:12Wonderful trophy, looks rather like a Formula One steering wheel to me, made out of beautiful silver.
01:48:19The man with the Marlboro insignia, as they are the race sponsor.
01:48:24The winning Constructors' Trophy goes to Norbert Hubbard, who is in fact the Director of Motorsport
01:48:29for Mercedes-Benz.
01:48:31Presented by Juan Antonio Samaras, the President of the International Olympic Committee.
01:48:41Second place driver is presented by Mr. Jose Pique, the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs,
01:48:48to David Coulthard, of course.
01:48:50And Carlos Garcia, the President of the Spanish Federation, presents Rubens Barrichello with
01:48:54his hardware.
01:48:56And now, a little champagne.
01:49:05Second time out there for Rubens this year.
01:49:08For Mika, what a victory, he needed that victory and he did such a splendid job.
01:49:11I thought Mercedes-Benz, the team of the McLaren team, had a wonderful, wonderful time.
01:49:16Absolutely brilliant pit stops for them.
01:49:19So, Mika Hakkinen, three peats in the Spanish Grand Prix, he's won it three years in a row.
01:49:26First driver to do that since Jackie Stewart, 1969 to 71.
01:49:30And we'll hear from an exuberant winner and the two runners-up when we return to Barcelona.
01:49:36You're watching Formula One on Fox Sports Net.
01:49:41Three finishes for the 2000 Spanish Grand Prix.
01:49:44Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello.
01:49:48Mika, many congratulations, this is your third victory in a row here.
01:49:52You must feel very pleased.
01:49:58Yes.
01:50:00I don't know how I could explain it, how pleased I am.
01:50:10I'm just over the moon, or how you say it.
01:50:14You seemed quicker than Michael throughout the race.
01:50:18Were you just waiting for the pit stops?
01:50:20Yes.
01:50:25OK.
01:50:26And moving on to David, well done Mika.
01:50:28That's it, you don't ask anything else.
01:50:30I'll come back to you in a moment.
01:50:32David, you're proving an expert at overtaking Michael Schumacher.
01:50:37Did you have any indication at the time that he was in trouble?
01:50:41Clearly, how quickly I caught him, I knew that wasn't his normal pace.
01:50:45So I knew he had a problem.
01:50:47And it was just a question of trying to use momentum as you catch him to get by.
01:50:52Because even if someone's running two seconds a lap slower,
01:50:55it can still be quite difficult to overtake.
01:50:57And it was quite close on the first manoeuvre he made, pulling to the right.
01:51:01I was very surprised at how late he made the decision.
01:51:04We came very close to touching.
01:51:08And then the second attempt, and I obviously went for the outside
01:51:12and felt confident I could outbrake him.
01:51:15So despite me having made a mistake in the first pit stop,
01:51:19which is why I dropped behind Ralph and Rubens,
01:51:22the guys did a good job to call me in a little bit earlier
01:51:26to get me track position after the stop.
01:51:29In view of the events of the past week,
01:51:31has it been a good thing for you to get into a race car and just get down to business?
01:51:35I understand you have a cracked rib.
01:51:37Absolutely. Get in the car, drive, do my job.
01:51:41And this is the best thing that could happen for the team and myself
01:51:48to come away from here with maximum points.
01:51:51Well done, David. Moving on to Micah, Rubens.
01:51:55Rubens, you benefited from Michael and Ralph scrapping.
01:52:01Do you feel that you owe this podium to Michael?
01:52:04Well, in a way, yes.
01:52:06I must admit that the race wasn't really good up to that point
01:52:13because you run behind people and even if they are two seconds slower,
01:52:18there's no way to overtake.
01:52:22So basically, my embrace was that.
01:52:26I was looking forward when on the pit overtook David
01:52:31and I was looking for that again with Ralph.
01:52:35But as far as I'm concerned, I think the team had a problem with Nigel
01:52:42who was putting the fuel in and then my pit stop was quite slow.
01:52:46So then I lose for both and my only chance was when I saw we were approaching Michael
01:52:54and I was lucky to drive by both.
01:52:58Michael ran over Nigel Stepney in his first stop.
01:53:00Do you know how Nigel is?
01:53:02Well, they just told me that he has a problem with his leg,
01:53:06but I hope it's not too bad.
01:53:09Thank you, Rubens. Back to Micah.
01:53:11You're now 14 points behind Michael in the World Championship.
01:53:15As we go to the Nürburgring, do you consider the World Championships
01:53:18to still be wide open?
01:53:22Before I answer that question, I want to say one thing.
01:53:25I would say I think the boys did a fantastic job today.
01:53:31For the pit stop what we did today, it was just amazing.
01:53:35Like you saw when we were coming together with Michael to the pit stop,
01:53:39they did a brilliant job.
01:53:41They changed the tyres just like they should and they did it in a fabulous way.
01:53:47I'm just very pleased and I want to say thank you to them.
01:53:49Great teamwork.
01:53:51To answer your question, it's a long way to go until the end of the season.
01:54:01Anything can happen. Today was a good example.
01:54:06I'm looking forward to the next Grand Prix and the next test.
01:54:11We have a lot of work to do.
01:54:15I'm happy. We have learned a lot this weekend about this car.
01:54:22I believe we can make it much quicker in the rest of the season.
01:54:27Many congratulations, Micah.
01:54:28Now a word from you and Rubens in your own language.
01:54:33Micah HÃ¥konen is over the moon about his first race of the season.
01:54:36We'll be back to wrap things up here at the Circuit de Catalunya in a moment.
01:54:45Welcome back to Catalunya.
01:54:47We've been working with our Fox Sportsnet affiliates
01:54:49to try to give you a consistent air time for these races.
01:54:52That means in two weeks' time, you'll see the Grand Prix of Europe at 10 a.m.
01:54:55your local time, except when local programming intervenes,
01:54:58which means earlier in Chicago and Wisconsin and later in Florida.
01:55:03Another look at the start.
01:55:05We can see Schumacher has one of these starts where he loves to go across the road
01:55:09and cut everybody off, which I don't think he does.
01:55:11Schumacher has one of these starts where he loves to go across the road
01:55:13and cut everybody off, which I don't think is very popular with the drivers.
01:55:16He had a hard time the other day at a meeting about this.
01:55:18However, he's still in front.
01:55:19But look the way Ralf Schumacher comes up between Barry Kello and David Coulthard.
01:55:24Somehow, they all manage to get through the corner.
01:55:26I think it looks like it was Heinz Horwitz gets out very sideways coming through those S's.
01:55:32Well, one of the defining moments of this race, Michael Schumacher on his first pit stop,
01:55:36trouble getting the fueling probe off the car.
01:55:39That may have damaged it or the car's receptacle,
01:55:42and they have a problem getting it in on this second stop.
01:55:48As Mika Hakkinen rolls away and into the lead for the final time,
01:55:52they finally get Schuey refueled.
01:55:54Yeah, that was a very long stop for Michael Schumacher, unfortunately.
01:55:59And then the Schumacher brothers, while battling each other for position,
01:56:02provide a great opportunity for Rubens.
01:56:05Just look at the way he's getting himself set up.
01:56:08He's lost a bit of momentum there, strangely enough,
01:56:10but I didn't expect him to come through quite as quick.
01:56:12And here are the two brothers going for it.
01:56:14They said there's no holds barred.
01:56:15Then Rubens really capitalizes on it.
01:56:18So Mika Hakkinen drives a perfect race to earn his first victory of the season.
01:56:23For Derek Bell and Peter Windsor, I'm Mike Joy.
01:56:25We'll see you in two weeks' time at the Nürburgring on Fox Sportsnet.
