00:00:00David Coulthard's Grand Prix season has been one of dreams and nightmares.
00:00:06He's been following in the shadow of world champion, his teammate, Mika Huckabee.
00:00:10But at Silverstone, scored a win in his home Grand Prix in Britain.
00:00:14Shortly thereafter, narrowly survived this harrowing plane crash.
00:00:20But two weeks ago in the streets of Monte Carlo, it was Coulthard again spraying the
00:00:24champagne.
00:00:25His world championship point leader, Michael Schumacher, concentrating on the wrong McLaren
00:00:29adversary.
00:00:55FIA Formula 1 world championship racing from Montreal, the circuit, and the Grand Prix
00:01:03of Canada round eight in the world championship.
00:01:06A big cheer from the Montreal fans as Jacques Villeneuve went out to begin his first reconnaissance
00:01:12lap as cars are on course and there is a sellout crowd.
00:01:17Let's have a look at what's coming up on our Mercedes-Benz pre-race today.
00:01:21We'll update Ralph Schumacher's recovery from his leg injury at Monte Carlo.
00:01:25We'll have highlights of qualifying that wasn't decided until the final seconds.
00:01:32And we'll visit with heights Harold Frenson on his first trip to Indianapolis.
00:01:37And take a look at some of the treacherous first and final turns here at Canada.
00:01:46Mika Huck in an on course, the defending world champion.
00:01:50Several spots behind David Coulthard in the starting line-up today.
00:01:53He starts a row behind his teammate.
00:01:56Hi, everyone.
00:01:57I'm Mike Joy alongside five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell.
00:02:00And Michael Schumacher may have a new adversary in this fight for the world championship because
00:02:04Coulthard's on a great roll.
00:02:06He really is.
00:02:07But of course his luck is going with him.
00:02:08He hasn't had the problems he had last year and before.
00:02:10And somehow he's just managed to demoralize his teammate just a little by being up front
00:02:14all the time.
00:02:15Possibility of shock absorber problems in Haakonen's qualifying effort, though he claimed
00:02:19to have had no trouble.
00:02:21He's just a tick behind Mika.
00:02:22And it's Ferrari-McLaren, Ferrari-McLaren in the first two rows.
00:02:26So should be very interesting, especially given the occasional calamity here at turn
00:02:31number one.
00:02:32Well, for some of the excitement and the drama as we lead up to this start of the Canadian
00:02:35grand prix, let's go to the pit lane and join London sunday times and F1 racing magazine
00:02:40correspondent Peter Windsor.
00:02:42Thank you very much, Mike.
00:02:43Right now I'm where everybody in this circuit wants to be, including the drivers, and not
00:02:47only because I'm standing next to Isabel, one of our lovely Air Canada grid girls, but
00:02:52also because this is pole position.
00:02:53This is where Michael Schumacher is going to be starting the Canadian grand prix in
00:02:56just over 25 minutes.
00:02:59Michael's out there right now.
00:03:00And the big question at the moment is, stickers on the front tires, worn tires on the rear
00:03:04or the other way around?
00:03:05At the moment it looks as if Bridgestone have got a compound that's maybe a tad too hard
00:03:10for this circuit.
00:03:11So the teams are playing with worn tires and new tires.
00:03:14It looks as if it's going to be a one-stop race, but, again, Ferrari were very quick
00:03:19on fuel tanks this morning.
00:03:20So maybe that was a ruse or maybe they're really going to try and make two stops.
00:03:24We shall see.
00:03:25Back to you.
00:03:26Well, it is rather different, Derek, to see them mix worn or scuffed and sticker tires
00:03:31on the car at the same time.
00:03:32The reason for that, of course, is they can't get the front tires to grip so well.
00:03:35So they go out and they seem to set after about six laps.
00:03:38So they get them worn and they come in, this is in practice, ready for the race and put
00:03:41brand-new sticker tires on the rear, which slide just a little bit more, helps the front
00:03:45turn in.
00:03:46As we come to Canada, let's have a look at the championship standings.
00:03:50Michael Schumacher has the lead over David Coulthard by 12, Mika Haakonen a further five
00:03:54points back, seven more to Barrichello, then Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher.
00:03:59And in the constructors' championship, well, it's all still happening.
00:04:03McLaren with 63, Williams 15, Benetton 14, Jordan 9 and Honda 6.
00:04:09A look down the front straightaway and this final corner and entrance to the pit lane.
00:04:17As the cars finish their recon laps, let's go back down to the paddock and pit area,
00:04:22Peter Windsor.
00:04:23And the news of these last two weeks, chief among the concerns is Ralf Schumacher recovering
00:04:28from that injured leg that we saw in Monte Carlo, Peter.
00:04:31That's right, Mike.
00:04:32It was a severe cut in the left leg there caused by a suspension piece coming into the
00:04:36footwell area of the Williams.
00:04:37The car hit the guardrail at just the wrong angle and Ralf actually didn't feel anything
00:04:42until he got out of the car.
00:04:43He looked down and saw blood on his overalls.
00:04:45He had a lot of stitches there, all executed in the Princess Grace Hospital in Monte Carlo.
00:04:49Then he returned to Germany to recuperate while his brother was on holiday here in the
00:04:53United States.
00:04:54Ralf's saying he's okay to race now.
00:04:56We shall see.
00:04:57Also in the news, Ralf's manager, Franz Tost, he's been with Ralf for a long time.
00:05:01He's now been recruited by BMW and will be working under Gerhard Berger running the operations
00:05:06for BMW in Formula 1.
00:05:08Finally, lots of rumors again surrounding Bernie Eccleston.
00:05:11It looks as if he's going to take control of all the areas that the FIA currently control,
00:05:16the administrative and the technical aspects of Grand Prix racing.
00:05:19We shall see there.
00:05:20But Charlie Whiting, the technical official here, is shortly moving to Biggin Hill, Bernie
00:05:24Eccleston's home base in England.
00:05:26Back to you.
00:05:27Thanks, Peter.
00:05:28There's also silly season rumors rather early in the year, but we'll have the rumors permitted
00:05:33for you later in today's telecast as you ride with David Coulthard down the pit lane after
00:05:37one of his recon laps.
00:05:40Now, Michael Schumacher was not the only driver to spend some time in North America this week.
00:05:45David Coulthard visited New York City and one of America's greatest race fans.
00:05:52The dreaded Michael Schumacher.
00:05:54Now, do you know this guy off the race, off the course?
00:05:57Yeah, no.
00:05:58We actually worked together as two of the directors of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association
00:06:02working on safety, but the problem is we keep running into each other on the track, so...
00:06:07Why is Formula 1 so expensive?
00:06:09It's just unbelievably expensive, isn't it?
00:06:12Driver salaries.
00:06:13Nah!
00:06:14I've never actually sneezed in the car, but I don't know if I can mention that there's
00:06:18one thing you can do.
00:06:19You can't pass wind in a corner.
00:06:22There's some insight for you.
00:06:27Welcome back to the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:06:29I'm here with David Coulthard.
00:06:30You've just seen him on the David Letterman Show.
00:06:32David, bodily functions under control?
00:06:34Yeah, all working normally.
00:06:36Great to hear.
00:06:37On the grid, relatively early, is the car looking good?
00:06:40Yeah, it's obviously, you know, going to be a little bit different to what you've been
00:06:43doing most of the weekend, because different weather conditions, a bit more fuel on board,
00:06:46that sort of thing, but generally I think I'm happy that the car's going to come to me.
00:06:50Ferrari seemed very quick in the warm-up this morning.
00:06:52Any question marks there from your point of view?
00:06:57I'm pretty sure that they drained fuel towards the end of the session.
00:07:00You know, I don't see how you gain that sort of time without making a big adjustment to
00:07:03the car, so I think now is when we find out exactly where we all stand.
00:07:07How nice a car is this to drive in Canada today?
00:07:11It's not the easiest car I've ever driven around this track, but I've just got to give
00:07:15it a little bit of respect and give a bit of room for the walls and be careful.
00:07:20That's it.
00:07:21You know, it's never going to be easy with these cars on the limit, but you're trying
00:07:24to dance that fine line.
00:07:26Thank you very much, David.
00:07:27Back to you, Mike.
00:07:28Well, it was really nice to see David so relaxed there.
00:07:31It's not easy for a driver sitting on the grid waiting for the start of a Grand Prix,
00:07:34being questioned and told to wait for action, so pretty tough for David, and he was relaxed.
00:07:38Great to see that action.
00:07:40Now, both the McLarens are on the grid in their grid positions.
00:07:44There's Norbert Haug, the manager for Mercedes, of racing activity, but both Ferraris have
00:07:49returned to the garage for adjustments.
00:07:51Neither one are on the grid at present.
00:07:54The circuit here in Canada, Derek, we've kind of touched on calamity corner, turn one, and
00:07:58then the final complex at this circuit.
00:08:01Let's have a look around.
00:08:02Yes, it's a very enjoyable circuit for the drivers.
00:08:04They really love it.
00:08:05I think they just like the challenge of the walls and everything being so adjacent.
00:08:08You can see the yellow areas there, which are possible overtaking spots.
00:08:11Not easy, but they are there, which is a change.
00:08:132.75 miles around, 15 turns.
00:08:15Let's go and do a lap with Jack Villeneuve.
00:08:19We're riding with him now, as he just comes around to braking for turn one.
00:08:23Getting there very tight.
00:08:25And then this corner here, turn two, the car inclined to push out.
00:08:27You can see the push in the steering, the effort he's putting in there.
00:08:30Goes out a little bit wide as he goes in there.
00:08:32He's up to 165 miles an hour as he comes up to turn three.
00:08:35Braking down 75 miles an hour in second gear.
00:08:38Works his way through there, trying not to get out too wide.
00:08:41Now we have this very long corner where there was an incident a couple of years ago.
00:08:44Braking very hard again from a very high speed of 170.
00:08:47Works his way through.
00:08:48Smooth surface there is out there.
00:08:50A bit of opposite lock as he tries to straighten it out.
00:08:52As he works his way down to turn six.
00:08:55Very fast section as he comes down here.
00:08:58Whoops.
00:08:59Braking down.
00:09:00Very sharp right.
00:09:01Very sharp left.
00:09:02Comes out of there, right up against the wall.
00:09:04But in fact, he's backed off a little bit
00:09:06because he's actually on his warming up lap, waiting for his qualifying lap to come up.
00:09:10Works his way down to the hairpin.
00:09:12190 miles an hour they'll be pulling here in sixth gear.
00:09:15Brakes very, very hard as he turns in.
00:09:17Obviously here you want to get maximum traction
00:09:19because it leads onto this greatly long straight
00:09:21that goes all the way back down to the pit complex.
00:09:23He works his way up to 200 miles an hour.
00:09:25And Jack is obviously preparing himself for this lap.
00:09:27You'll see him just adjust something on his helmet there
00:09:30which is probably pulling up his seatbelt to get it going.
00:09:32If in fact you're going in the pits, you go straight on here.
00:09:35If not, you turn right and go to the right and left.
00:09:37Watch out for the kerb and the wall.
00:09:39That was a lap with Jack Villeneuve.
00:09:45Well, let's go down once again and rejoin Peter down in the pit lane.
00:09:48Thank you, Mike. I'm with Ron Dennis
00:09:50celebrating McLaren's 500th Grand Prix.
00:09:52It must be an emotional race for you, Ron.
00:09:55Interesting. I don't know about emotional.
00:09:57It'd be pretty emotional if we win.
00:09:58But right now we're just concentrating on this one.
00:10:01Now, the Ferraris looked pretty quick in the warm-up this morning.
00:10:03Does that raise any question marks in your mind?
00:10:06No, they obviously dropped quite a lot of fuel out there, cars.
00:10:10You can see the top speeds, the intermediate speeds, go up.
00:10:14So either they're trying to dummy us into an alternative strategy
00:10:19which, of course, we won't buy
00:10:21or they're considering quite a radical race strategy.
00:10:25Either way, I don't think it doesn't worry us at all.
00:10:28It looks to be incredibly close now between McLaren and Ferrari.
00:10:32How would you perceive the qualities of the two cars at the moment?
00:10:36Well, frankly enough, obviously we analyse these things in great depth
00:10:41and at the moment they seem to be about equal in qualifying condition
00:10:46but race condition, we seem to have the edge.
00:10:50So it remains to be seen if that proves to be the case today
00:10:55but over the last sort of previous races this season
00:10:59we race stronger than they race
00:11:01so it means we can push them all the way
00:11:03and if we're able to do that, of course, we'll maybe see them make a mistake.
00:11:07We'll have to see. That's assuming they get in the lead.
00:11:09Thank you very much, Ron. Good luck. And back to you, Mike.
00:11:12Michael Schumacher and now Rubens Barrichello rolling up into position
00:11:16after a quick lap.
00:11:18Difficult to tell here if they're running those slick tires at the back
00:11:21rather the sticker tires at the back with the scuffs on the front
00:11:24as we had discussed earlier
00:11:26but now just about all of the cars save Riccardo Zonta
00:11:29are in position on the grid.
00:11:31We go closer to a start.
00:11:33Earlier this week, Eddie Irvine and Johnny Herbert
00:11:35had a chance to go play with some old and new Jaguars.
00:11:48Welcome back to our Mercedes-Benz pre-race
00:11:50for the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal.
00:11:52Jacques Villeneuve with well-wishers, photographers, and crew
00:11:55as you look at the paddock club over the pits
00:11:58along the front straightaway
00:12:00and the backside of our commentary boxes there with the green roof.
00:12:03In two weeks, it'll be the Grand Prix of France.
00:12:05John Watson will join Derek Bell for our Fox Sportsnet coverage
00:12:0810 a.m. your local time, Sunday, July 2nd.
00:12:11Let's go to Peter Windsor with the road to starter.
00:12:14A little distracted here.
00:12:16Appears to be a slight brake problem on the car here, Rubens.
00:12:18Yeah, we're getting low temperature on the right front wheel
00:12:22so I think we have to change the discs
00:12:24and so it's a bit of a rush right now.
00:12:29Which is a shame because the car's been running beautifully all weekend, right?
00:12:32Yeah, yeah. I hope I don't have a problem
00:12:34because right now is not the time to have a problem.
00:12:36Well, you're amazingly calm.
00:12:38What's actually going through your mind right now?
00:12:40Well, I mean, Ross told me to keep it calm.
00:12:43It's going to work, so I hope it works
00:12:45because the car runs beautifully this morning.
00:12:48In actual fact, I would like to say hello to Tony Canan.
00:12:51He should be watching us from the hospital.
00:12:53He broke the arm yesterday in the Indy car,
00:12:56so I hope he's okay.
00:12:58Thanks very much, Rubens. Back to you.
00:13:00Well, thanks, Peter.
00:13:01It's a shame he's going to have to find out if that brake works
00:13:03when he comes hurtling down from 180 miles an hour, Derek, to test it out.
00:13:07Into turn one, of course, which isn't the ideal spot for that.
00:13:10Well, yesterday's qualifying session, the one-hour session,
00:13:12they have an hour, but it seems all the action gets compressed
00:13:15in the last three or four minutes.
00:13:17It certainly does. It seems to happen a lot like that,
00:13:19the classic yesterday, right up to those dying seconds of the session.
00:13:21Well, let's have a look at the highlights of yesterday's qualifying.
00:13:26Well, the crowds are all there.
00:13:27They were absolutely over the moon about it.
00:13:29Very, very excited, indeed, about the whole thing.
00:13:31Couldn't wait to get those cars out.
00:13:33They had to wait 20 minutes before Mika Hakkinen came out.
00:13:35Mika hasn't really been there all weekend,
00:13:37and he only ended up fourth quickest.
00:13:39Not very happy with his car, but he did find he had a broken shock absorber
00:13:41when they checked the car out last night,
00:13:43so maybe that was to do with expecting greater things today.
00:13:45Joste Stappen, well, he was running very well in the arrows
00:13:48until he hit the wall.
00:13:50That put him out, and he qualified quite well down.
00:13:52Red flags came out for that, and that did delay things.
00:13:54John Acy, well, he had been running, in fact,
00:13:56very quickly all weekend in the Prost.
00:13:58He, unfortunately, his engine expired,
00:14:00and that set him back somewhat,
00:14:02and he didn't qualify where he'd like to have done.
00:14:04Johnny Herbert, well, he was doing a very, very good job
00:14:06all weekend, trying to show to everybody
00:14:08that he is worth a place in the Jaguar team next year.
00:14:10He qualified in 10th place,
00:14:12probably not as great as they had hoped,
00:14:14but he had been the top six most of the time.
00:14:17Back to his injuries.
00:14:19Still, obviously, with stitches in his leg,
00:14:21but nonetheless, he did a super job,
00:14:23best they could hope for in the BMW.
00:14:25Vilner, home circuit.
00:14:27What more can you say about this man?
00:14:29He has such incredible talent,
00:14:31really pushes the car all the way,
00:14:33did a great job to finish 6th,
00:14:35and, in fact, he had been running well all weekend.
00:14:37Heinz-Auer-Frentzen in the Jordan.
00:14:39He hadn't been going quite so well this season,
00:14:41but the car did work well here,
00:14:43and they were very, very happy with his 5th place.
00:14:46Well, I think Ferrari are happy with it,
00:14:48but Rubens wasn't happy at all.
00:14:50He said he got held up on the last lap by some traffic,
00:14:52which we believe was his teammate.
00:14:54Nonetheless, a great third for Rubens.
00:14:56And now David Coulthard.
00:14:58The whole weekend's been about David versus Michael Schumacher.
00:15:00Last lap, David goes out,
00:15:02and he gets pole position by 9,000th of a second.
00:15:04But right behind him, Schumacher,
00:15:06and the last lap goes round,
00:15:08and he beats it. Can you believe it?
00:15:10What an incredible piece of driving
00:15:12by Schumacher and Coulthard, 1st and 2nd on the grid.
00:15:14Great stuff. Excitement for Ferrari.
00:15:16Ferrari, in fact, reigns supreme,
00:15:18but look at the enthusiasm from the crowd.
00:15:22Third pole of the year for Michael Schumacher.
00:15:24Big difference in driver's pre-race preparation.
00:15:26You saw Jacques Villeneuve,
00:15:28who prefers to stay in the car,
00:15:30not get out of the car.
00:15:32Michael Schumacher went to the garage.
00:15:34The McLaren driver's standing around giving interviews.
00:15:36So, big difference.
00:15:40In the days before electronic engine management,
00:15:43Formula 1 engines had an exhaust leak.
00:15:45It meant a short life for the engine and early exit.
00:15:47Well, Michael Schumacher had problems in Monaco,
00:15:49an exhausting problem,
00:15:51and by your e-mails, you wanted to know what happened.
00:15:53Here's Peter with more.
00:15:55Thanks, Mike. Well, yes, Michael Schumacher
00:15:57effectively lost certain victory in the Monte Carlo Grand Prix
00:15:59due to nothing more than a cracked exhaust.
00:16:01How did that happen?
00:16:03Well, the exhaust gases come out of a leak like that
00:16:05at something like 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:16:07The reason it caused a problem
00:16:09is that most Formula 1 cars
00:16:12have a lot of carbon in their suspension now.
00:16:14This is very similar to the pushrod on the back of the Ferrari.
00:16:16As you can see, it's made of carbon.
00:16:18And the problem with this sort of piece
00:16:20is not the carbon itself, but the resin.
00:16:22It's not really a problem, but the properties of the resin.
00:16:24Now, they do not last at anything
00:16:26over 300 or 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:16:28So you see an enormous difference there.
00:16:30You suddenly blow 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit
00:16:32and this piece will not last.
00:16:34Michael Schumacher out of the race
00:16:36because of this carbon suspension problem.
00:16:38But look here at the Jordan.
00:16:40No wonder Jordan did not break any suspension parts
00:16:42in Monte Carlo.
00:16:44Back to you.
00:16:46Thanks, Peter.

00:17:31Thank you, Mike.
00:17:33I'm with Jarno Trulli, just getting up now to get in the car.
00:17:35Jarno, you could have won Monaco.
00:17:38How does the car compare here in Canada?
00:17:40Well, in Monaco, we were much more competitive
00:17:42than in Canada.
00:17:44But we still look competitive here.
00:17:46I hope to finish this race.
00:17:48Thank you very much, Jarno.
00:17:50Good luck. Back to you.

00:18:15Then Japan and Malaysia in October
00:18:17to finish out the 2000 season.
00:18:19Ralph Schumacher,
00:18:21a bit of a knee pad there.
00:18:23Gerhard Berger of BMW behind him
00:18:25as we draw close
00:18:27to the start of today's race.
00:18:33Derek Bell and I went to Indianapolis
00:18:35where Heinz-Harald Frentzen got to see the brickyard
00:18:37for the very first time.
00:18:45Heinz-Harald, we're here with this
00:18:47famous yard of bricks behind us and below us
00:18:49in probably the world's most
00:18:51famous racetrack in the world.
00:18:53What are your first impressions of it?
00:18:55I'm very impressed. I'm impressed how many
00:18:57people can fit in here and
00:18:59how big this circuit is.
00:19:01It's going to be very enjoyable for us here to race.
00:19:04You've obviously been around the track and done a few laps
00:19:06so you've got one up on some of your teammates.
00:19:08But what do you actually feel
00:19:10about the layout of the circuit and
00:19:12sort of car setup and things like that?
00:19:14Have you got any ideas already?
00:19:16It's going to be a very extreme circuit.
00:19:18We have a very, very long straight,
00:19:20a very long part where we are flat out here
00:19:22and we have a very sophisticated infield
00:19:24and there's no really
00:19:26other circuits near to that circuit.
00:19:28Maybe Hockenheim,
00:19:30but Hockenheim is not as sophisticated
00:19:33so it's going to be a compromise
00:19:35to find the right setup.
00:19:37We're going to see as well good
00:19:39overtaking manoeuvres here on the main straight
00:19:41out of the top.
00:19:43What are you going to be able to tell your teammates about
00:19:45Indianapolis Motor Speedway?
00:19:47I'm not going to tell them a lot about it.
00:19:49I didn't think you would.
00:19:51Let me tell you, we were doing 150 miles an hour
00:19:53in that Mercedes touring car down the straight
00:19:55and they're going to be doing something well over
00:19:57220 when they race there in September
00:19:59so look out for a very fast race.
00:20:01It's going to be phenomenal when we get to Indianapolis.
00:20:03There's a view of the city of Montreal, the St. Lawrence River
00:20:05and the course here on the Ile Notre Dame.
00:20:09And this course features what has been termed
00:20:11Calamity Corner, the complex,
00:20:13the final complex before start finish
00:20:15last year claimed
00:20:17four world champions cars
00:20:19in the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:20:21First was world sports car
00:20:23champion Ricardo Zonta
00:20:25backsliding it in
00:20:27with the right rear
00:20:30in his B.A.R.
00:20:32Next, former world champ
00:20:34Damon Hill in the Jordan.
00:20:36Same song, second verse.
00:20:38Michael Schumacher
00:20:40while leading the race
00:20:42paced to the wall, knocked himself
00:20:44out of contention and finally
00:20:46Jack Villeneuve just drilled
00:20:48it in.
00:20:50Yesterday, Peter Wacht
00:20:52down at Calamity Corner.
00:20:54...is that they haven't changed this fantastic
00:20:56corner. What they have done is allow
00:20:58the grass on the inside of the right-hander there
00:21:00to grow for a good 12 months.
00:21:02So it's now bonded. So when a Michael Schumacher
00:21:04or a David Coulthard goes over that today
00:21:06they won't be spraying marbles
00:21:08onto the track. So hopefully, in theory
00:21:10nobody's going to do anything. But the problem of course
00:21:12is this brick wall here. This is going
00:21:14to define today's race probably.
00:21:16Partly because you'll see the guys skimming
00:21:18this. If they get within an inch or half an inch
00:21:20you'll know it's probably a Schumacher
00:21:22or a Coulthard or a Hakanen. If they
00:21:24hit the wall, it could be any number of other guys.
00:21:26This wall's got a lot of history of course
00:21:28and yesterday the FIA were here
00:21:30inspecting it to see what sort of damage
00:21:32had been done already. A few cars have hit the wall.
00:21:34Of course, this is all presupposing
00:21:36they've got through that first corner after the start.
00:21:40...what it's all about, Peter, because
00:21:42we've seen so many incidents over the last two or three years
00:21:44where everybody's so desperate
00:21:46to get in front into that first corner
00:21:48because they feed in through a right-hander, brake
00:21:50very hard for the left, and then more mayhem.
00:21:52Look at it. Everything breaks loose
00:21:54and cars flying everywhere. They had restarts
00:21:56we've had red flags in the last couple of years
00:21:58and here we see another shot of an incident
00:22:00happening here as one of the cars flies across
00:22:02the grass, takes out the others. It's really
00:22:04a very, very dangerous corner and let's hope we don't
00:22:06see any of that today and see a clean start.
00:22:08Already this morning we saw that in the Ferrari Challenge
00:22:10race. A fifth car off the grid
00:22:12came sliding through that chicane, took out
00:22:14another, and
00:22:16we'll be back with the starting
00:22:18grid for the Grand Prix of Canada
00:22:20and your race next. You're watching

00:22:42Welcome back to Montreal.
00:22:44Mike Joy with Derek Bell and Peter
00:22:46Windsor closing in.
00:22:48On the start as you see, the grid is
00:22:50being cleared. Weather's been variable all
00:22:52weekend. Friday was in the 90s
00:22:54in pure sun. Yesterday
00:22:56started out very cloudy and then got up
00:22:58to sunny in 70s. Today
00:23:00it's only 64 degrees.
00:23:02There is quite an overcast. It'll be a nice
00:23:04cool day for drivers
00:23:06and engines.
00:23:08Little chilly on the fans. A lot of jackets
00:23:10in evidence there in the grandstand in front
00:23:12of us. And there's the
00:23:14hometown favorite, Jacques Villeneuve.
00:23:16Jarno Trulli.
00:23:20Ricardo Zonta.
00:23:22As the
00:23:24formation lap is about
00:23:26to get underway. One yellow flag up
00:23:28toward the front of the grid.
00:23:40From the circuit,
00:23:42Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Problems
00:23:44on David Coulthard's car as they get set
00:23:46for the formation lap. They had the rear end
00:23:48of the air, Derek. Couldn't find
00:23:50a gear? Well, he got going,
00:23:52but my goodness, that was very tense because you were
00:23:54not allowed to come from the back and put
00:23:56up your position if you haven't got away on that first
00:23:58start. So, last
00:24:00seconds as those guys were putting in an air
00:24:02starter.
00:24:04Let's have a look at our Mercedes-Benz
00:24:06starting grid for the Canadian Grand Prix. Michael
00:24:08Schumacher has his third pole of the season
00:24:10and his fifth in the last ten races.
00:24:12David Coulthard's very happy to be
00:24:14up there, but he would like to have been on pole
00:24:16instead of the front.
00:24:18Rubens Barrichello, traffic problems, he said,
00:24:20kept him off the front row, but good run.
00:24:22Mika Hakkinen hasn't said too much all weekend.
00:24:24He can't be happy with fourth place.
00:24:26Tonight, Seryl Frentzen was aiming for the top six
00:24:28and made it. He's the pastor of the Jordans.
00:24:30And Villeneuve, he was very, very happy with his car
00:24:32and I think it's a great job for him to be that high
00:24:34up on the grid. Jarno Trulli,
00:24:36behind Frentzen this race, said he suffered
00:24:38from lack of grip. Zonta showing
00:24:40just how quick that Honda engine is, being right
00:24:42up behind Jack Villeneuve. The arrows
00:24:44have been quite fast all weekend. Pedro de la Rosa
00:24:46quite pleased with ninth. And
00:24:48Fisichella and the Benetton team
00:24:50not happy with that lowly position.
00:24:52Look at Johnny Herbert. He's outqualified
00:24:54his Jaguar teammate, Eddie Irvine, by five
00:24:56positions. Ralph Schumacher, not
00:24:58totally happy with the Williams performance at this race.
00:25:00Just for stopping, had a good run.
00:25:02Might have been faster, but for his crash,
00:25:04that took him away from his last run.
00:25:06Alexander still cannot get up there
00:25:08and beat his teammate, Fisichella.
00:25:10Both Saubers practiced well. There's a
00:25:12look at Salo and Eddie Irvine back
00:25:14there in the eighth row.
00:25:16And then Alesi, whose engine blew up,
00:25:18and Jensen Button, who had fuel pickup
00:25:20problems on his qualifying runs.
00:25:22Pedro Diniz, again, the Saubers practiced well,
00:25:24but had trouble in qualifying. And Genet
00:25:26is up off the back row in his
00:25:28finale. Nick Heitkamp has had a tough
00:25:30weekend in the Frost and Matsukane.
00:25:32Blew his engine, had trouble
00:25:34with the spare, and on the last few minutes
00:25:36of qualifying, had to jump in Genet's car
00:25:38to get a time within the 107
00:25:40percent window so that he could start
00:25:42this race.
00:25:48The amazing thing is, in fact, that Genet
00:25:50is half a second quicker in warm-up this morning
00:25:52in eighth place than he was in qualifying yesterday.
00:25:54Yes. Yep, they really found some
00:25:56speed there.
00:25:58Now, just prior to this formation
00:26:00lap, the yellow flag was waving there
00:26:02next to David Coulthard's spot.
00:26:04And you see the mechanics are still working
00:26:06with the car in the air at the back.
00:26:08Now, if he doesn't go and the rest of the field
00:26:10does, he'd have to start this race
00:26:12at the tail of the field. The mechanics jump
00:26:14out of the way, and away he goes.
00:26:16Yes, he was having a job to get it into
00:26:18gear, and therefore he
00:26:20had it on the jack to check it was going into gear.
00:26:22The big question after last
00:26:24year's start, can they get through
00:26:26turn one without incident?
00:26:30Live on Fox SportsNet,
00:26:32we are set for the start
00:26:34of the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:26:39Watch the lights
00:26:41top of screen as Heitfeld is the last car
00:26:43to roll into position. They'll all
00:26:45light, and when they go out, we are racing.
00:27:05Yellow flags at the back
00:27:07of the grid. Somebody didn't make it.
00:27:11Barrichello did not get
00:27:13off well.
00:27:17Eddie Irvine stalled on the grid.
00:27:20Eddie was well back on the grid.
00:27:22And another miraculous
00:27:24start for Jack Villeneuve. There he is
00:27:26in third place. That's the third time
00:27:28in the last four races that Villeneuve
00:27:30has rocketed away from the grid.
00:27:32Outstanding start.
00:27:34Oh, look at poor Irvine, poor Jaguars,
00:27:36what a great start.
00:27:38The crowd here will be going wild.
00:27:40Well, we know they are going wild.
00:27:42And they've now got to get Eddie Irvine out of the way
00:27:44before they come around. They're trying to push him down the pit straight
00:27:46to get him round the end of the pit wall.
00:27:48Not very nice for those marshallers. I've never seen
00:27:50them run so fast pushing a stationary
00:27:52car or an
00:27:54immobile car.
00:27:58Great start by Schumacher, and of course
00:28:00David Corden and Villeneuve,
00:28:02but poor Hakkinen way back.
00:28:04He didn't have a good start at all, possibly brought on
00:28:06by the way Villeneuve came through.
00:28:18Let's see what happened to Mika Hakkinen,
00:28:20third row on the left of your screen.
00:28:24Barrichello dropping in rather second row.
00:28:26And look at Jack, right to the outside,
00:28:28diving it into the chicane.
00:28:30Well, he got round the outside,
00:28:32that's perfect for the left-hander,
00:28:34and then the right-hander afterwards.
00:28:36And of course he's on the inside. Here's the start again of
00:28:38Jack. Just watch this.
00:28:40Hakkinen sort of not very happy in front of him.
00:28:42Barrichello having an appalling start,
00:28:44and I don't know why. I think maybe
00:28:46Mika saw that bit of tar smoke coming off
00:28:48David's car. Jack understeers
00:28:50across the road in front of Hakkinen, and that couldn't have
00:28:52done much for Hakkinen's confidence. Here we go
00:28:54again, another shot. A wonderful start
00:28:56out, dragging Frenzen as he
00:28:58comes up here. Watch again.
00:29:00Ferrari and Hakkinen isn't quite
00:29:02sure what to do, so Jack is alongside him.
00:29:04Great Indy-type stuff that he's used to doing
00:29:06side by side.
00:29:08Going into that corner, Kulthar did lock
00:29:10the wheels as Schumacher
00:29:12cut across in front of him. Also,
00:29:14Pedro de la Rosa made a great start. Picked up
00:29:16two positions. From ninth, he is up
00:29:18to seventh in the arrows.
00:29:20This is the two
00:29:22cars that really have dominated most of
00:29:24this weekend. It's a long way to go, I know, but
00:29:26it's certainly the way that it has been
00:29:28this whole weekend between Schumacher
00:29:30and David Kulthar. David Kulthar
00:29:32mainly.
00:29:48The gap
00:29:50opening up back to third place Villeneuve.
00:29:52And
00:29:54is that de la Rosa? Has he gone past
00:29:56him? He has.
00:29:58Sixth place for de la Rosa.
00:30:00Here's how it happened. Here it is
00:30:02happening. Coming into the hairpin,
00:30:04casino hairpin, down the inside, a super
00:30:06bit of work, and Heinz Auer couldn't do much
00:30:08about it on the way out either, which often you
00:30:10can when you've been, the other guys put
00:30:12off line a bit, you make the benefit
00:30:14of it coming out.
00:30:18So another custom spot
00:30:20for arrows, but their fortunes have been improving
00:30:22race by race. Yes,
00:30:24this circuit really is a relatively low
00:30:26force down, so of course they can go
00:30:28really fast. Here we go, another shot.
00:30:30This is, whoa, Jensen Button trying to
00:30:32make a move, but not managing
00:30:34to do it. Not surprised. Don't be too
00:30:36brave, Jensen, you need those miles.
00:30:38And you need a result. Yeah, he was
00:30:40fighting with Nick Heidfeld who would come off the back
00:30:42row up to the 18th position.
00:30:50Now Jacques doing what he's sort of done
00:30:52before, and he's holding them up a little bit.
00:30:54Remember, this Honda engine is something
00:30:56like 25 horsepower more than anything
00:30:58else that they've had before, and it's
00:31:00about 10 kilos, 22 pounds heavier.
00:31:02Sorry, lighter, what am I
00:31:04talking about? So he has a
00:31:06distinct advantage, and that's why this car,
00:31:08I believe, is doing so well at this circuit.
00:31:10Because they run that
00:31:12low downforce setup.
00:31:14Again, out close to that wall.
00:31:16They've got five seconds
00:31:18on that second group already,
00:31:20and that's a heck of a lot.
00:31:22He's had this before recently,
00:31:24and he doesn't like it, but he's got to
00:31:26be quicker off that line.
00:31:46Peter, what happened to Eddie Irvine?
00:31:48Well, Mike, it's a little bit hazy
00:31:50at the moment, but it appears as if he had some
00:31:52sort of clutch problem. No surprise, ready to learn
00:31:54that, I guess. They restarted
00:31:56the car in the pit lane, and of course he is out there now.
00:31:58So it looks like a clutch problem
00:32:00for Eddie Irvine.
00:32:02Looked rather similar to what David Coulthard had
00:32:04as he was on the grid before that. Similar
00:32:06sort of thing, I would say.
00:32:10It's a good time to point out as they're braking from
00:32:12180 mile an hour down into the casino
00:32:14a bit of overtaking being done there.
00:32:16It's very, very hard, if not
00:32:18the hardest track on brakes that they go
00:32:20to in the world. And in fact, there's something
00:32:22like 55 gear shifts
00:32:24per lap. That is an amazing amount.
00:32:26Very, very hard for these gearboxes and
00:32:28for the brakes, and that's why I think it'll play
00:32:30into the hands of the people that have got their sums right
00:32:32on brake wear, because it's going to be a matter of
00:32:34just how many stops they make, because
00:32:36if you're going to do a two-stop strategy,
00:32:38it means that you could run a very much lighter
00:32:40fuel load, therefore less weight
00:32:42to slow down.
00:32:45Watching third, fourth, fifth, and sixth,
00:32:47Villeneuve's B.A.R.,
00:32:49Barrichello's Ferrari,
00:32:51the McLaren of Hockenheim,
00:32:53and the Arrows of Pedro
00:32:55de la Rosa.
00:32:58The Canadian Grand Prix continues
00:33:00after these messages. You're
00:33:02watching Formula One on
00:33:04Fox Sportsnet.
00:33:07Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage
00:33:09of the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:33:11In the circuit, Gilles Villeneuve,
00:33:13there in Montreal, Pedro de la Rosa
00:33:15hanging right with that group
00:33:17for third, fourth, fifth, and sixth
00:33:19behind Michael Schumacher and David
00:33:21Coulthard, and Coulthard has just set
00:33:23fastest lap of the race at 1 minute
00:33:2520.6.
00:33:29One has to remark at this point about
00:33:31the fact that this is a very, very
00:33:33difficult race. It's a very, very
00:33:35difficult race, and one has to remark
00:33:37at this point, of course, which I did
00:33:39lightly just now, but you can see
00:33:41Jacques Villeneuve in the fast bits
00:33:43he pulls away, and the power of this
00:33:45Honda engine, and the other guys,
00:33:47the Ferraris, still with lots of power,
00:33:49cannot do much about it. In the corners,
00:33:51he is somewhat slow, and as you come
00:33:53down to the casino hairpin, you can
00:33:55see just what I mean. They're right
00:33:57up behind him, but they can do nothing
00:33:59about it on the straight.
00:34:01A Father's Day homecoming for
00:34:03Michael Schumacher. As Schumacher and
00:34:05Coulthard continue to battle, let's ride
00:34:07with David.
00:34:15That's about nine seconds
00:34:17back to the third place battle.
00:34:25This is the infamous
00:34:27corner we talked about.
00:34:29The last corner of the lap.
00:34:31I must say that nobody mentioned in
00:34:33when we were discussing that corner, that the reason
00:34:35they all went off last year was all the dirt
00:34:37was thrown up to such a degree that there
00:34:39was a magic line, and if you went one inch out
00:34:41of line, you went into that wall.
00:34:43The moment we hope that nobody's running over
00:34:45the dirt patch, the grass, and bringing it onto the
00:34:47track, so it shouldn't
00:34:49create a problem today in that case.
00:34:51But if it starts to get broken up,
00:34:53then we will see some fireworks.
00:34:55Jacques Villeneuve leading
00:34:57that second pack from third place
00:34:59on back. On this
00:35:01Father's Day, the circuit is named for
00:35:03his father, Formula One great Gilles Villeneuve,
00:35:05who had six wins and
00:35:0767 starts, scored
00:35:09107 championship points.
00:35:11Jacques has eclipsed his father's career
00:35:13in the statistical categories and won a world
00:35:15championship.
00:35:17We also should point out that Gilles Villeneuve
00:35:19actually won here in 1978,
00:35:21the first year that the circuit opened,
00:35:23so that's why it's really been named after
00:35:25him for what he did for Canada.
00:35:29Well, Peter, how about
00:35:31pit strategy for this afternoon?
00:35:33Well, Mike, I'm down here in the Williams BMW
00:35:35garage, and they're speculating
00:35:37that maybe De La Rosa
00:35:39and Villeneuve are on a two-stop strategy.
00:35:41We believe most of the cars out there
00:35:43are adopting a one-stop strategy, but
00:35:45maybe for reasons of looking good in
00:35:47local country or perhaps passing
00:35:49cars, those two drivers might be on
00:35:51a two-stop. We shall see when it gets into that
00:35:53two-stop window, which is about lap
00:35:5523.
00:35:57De La Rosa's teammate,
00:35:59Joseph Verstappen, has moved up into the
00:36:01top ten from 13th position,
00:36:03running in 10th.
00:36:05And it could well be a light
00:36:07fuel load, but the Arrows
00:36:09have been in the top ten
00:36:11all weekend, Eric, but for
00:36:13difficulties in qualifying, which put
00:36:15De La Rosa ninth on the grid.
00:36:17Let's ride with Jacques.
00:36:19Well, Jacques has been up there all weekend.
00:36:21He's got a lovely bit of road in front of him, but the other guys
00:36:23wish it was them that was in front of him.
00:36:25We've saw, I believe, Michael Schumacher sitting
00:36:27behind him at the British Grand Prix for a long time.
00:36:29We've seen it at other races this year.
00:36:31The car has this wonderful power,
00:36:33but the VAR has yet to find the handling
00:36:35that it requires, and one wonders maybe
00:36:37what Jacques will be doing next year.
00:36:39Well, we'll have to wait and see.
00:36:41We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:43We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:45We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:47We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:49We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:51We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:53We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:55We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:57We'll have to wait and see.
00:36:59We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:01We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:03We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:05We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:07We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:09We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:11We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:13We'll have to wait and see.
00:37:16Schumacher and Coulthard,
00:37:18it's been 13 races since a pole
00:37:20sitter won in Formula 1,
00:37:22that was Michael last year
00:37:24at Hungary.
00:37:26Michael seemed a little perturbed
00:37:28by the question when it was asked
00:37:30after he won the poll yesterday.
00:37:32He said, well, it's nothing
00:37:34to the driver, but all of you
00:37:36in the press were making such a big
00:37:38deal about it.
00:37:40He said maybe 13 will be a lucky
00:37:42number.
00:37:43as we arrive at Jacques.
00:37:45Whoa, look at the lock he puts on.
00:37:49That's the fastest bit of opposite lock I've seen.
00:38:00We were looking at the Jordan brakes this morning, earlier,
00:38:03and they have actually, on their air intake for the brakes,
00:38:05the air going to the caliper to cool it down,
00:38:07they have a regulation area that they can bring the air in at,
00:38:10so they've actually taken a pipe off it to,
00:38:12directly onto the disc to cool it down,
00:38:14because this racetrack is certainly a place that's great concern for them,
00:38:17and the brakes are right on the limit.
00:38:19That is truly a ninth, we were watching truly a ninth place ahead of Verstappen.
00:38:25And now we're back at the battle for third.
00:38:30This group has now fallen 12.8 seconds off the lead.
00:38:34Which implies, by the time they possibly come in for a first stop,
00:38:39if they're on a two-stop strategy,
00:38:41they would virtually have a pit stop in hand.
00:38:48I'm a little surprised, Eric, that Frentzen is not able to keep touch with this group.
00:38:52And the Jordan, there he is, top of your screen.
00:38:56Yes, it is, and in fact, surely couldn't do much about the car in front of him either.
00:39:01His Zonta, which again is surprising, but of course it's the power of that Honda engine.
00:39:08But it is still a long race, and the guys keep saying to me,
00:39:11the race will come to me, the race will come to me.
00:39:14And that's provided they did all their homework on Friday, and setting up the cars.
00:39:18And it's a common Jordan tactic to start with a completely full load of fuel,
00:39:23to give them more options on their strategy later in the race.
00:39:26That may well be what's keeping Frentzen at distance from De La Rosa,
00:39:30some two and a half seconds back of the Orange and Black Arrows.
00:39:38Here in the Canadian Grand Prix, Jacques Villeneuve, one finish in the points.
00:39:42Second in 96, two DNFs, and a ten.
00:39:46There's Frentzen with Zonta close behind him, and truly behind him.
00:39:51And Jos Verstappen, who actually has been terribly quick all weekend,
00:39:54but unfortunately had that accident in qualifying.
00:39:56Having at that point, here he goes, he's having a look, but no way.
00:39:59They're braking from 200 miles an hour, and they're braking such a short space,
00:40:02there is no room to go by.
00:40:04Yet one would think there would be plenty of time and plenty of space,
00:40:07but it's not the case.
00:40:09Such a short space, there is no room to go by,
00:40:12yet one would think there would be plenty of time and plenty of space,
00:40:15but it's so tight, they're braking areas.
00:40:19Fisichella trying to gain some ground on that group, but failing to.
00:40:23Dropping another three tenths back of Verstappen this last time by.
00:40:28Now it's 14 seconds from Coulthard, back to the pack led by Jacques Villeneuve.
00:40:40The Montreal and Canadian press, asking lots of questions
00:40:44and getting no answers on Jacques Villeneuve's future,
00:40:47whether he might go to Benetton next year, move to another team,
00:40:51wait to make a move until 2002.
00:40:53It's never too early for speculating, but it's still quite early in the game for answers.
00:40:57Boy, look at them all catch up under braking.
00:40:59Yeah, well you see a low downforce car, a stop-go penalty, but David,
00:41:03he's got a lot of room to go by,
00:41:05Yeah, well you see a low downforce car, a stop-go penalty, but David,
00:41:09oh my goodness, that's what he does not need, that is awful.
00:41:13I wonder why that was due for.
00:41:15I wonder if that's related to what happened, uh,
00:41:19yes, the incident, uh, Derek,
00:41:21involving Coulthard as they took off for the formation lap
00:41:24was under investigation by the stewards prior to the, uh, green flag,
00:41:28or rather prior, excuse me, prior to the start of the race,
00:41:31and they have decided to institute a ten-second stop-go.
00:41:34Yeah, because everybody should be clear of the grid at a certain number of minutes
00:41:37before the start of the day, they weren't clear of David,
00:41:39because Michael had already gone, half the pack had gone,
00:41:41and it was against the rules, and that, I think, is, you know,
00:41:44sometimes in this, in this, mostly a sport,
00:41:47I'm surprised they don't allow this sort of thing to happen to make a race of it.
00:41:50Now, Michael Schumacher has a 12-second lead, it doesn't seem fair.
00:41:56Well, and it's not just the ten seconds, it's the time getting up and down the pit lane
00:41:59at the pit lane speed limit.
00:42:01That is really going to cripple, uh, David Coulthard's chances today.
00:42:05Yeah, with a speed limit of 50 miles an hour as they come down, it is crippling.
00:42:11But you never know, stranger things have happened.
00:42:13Let's ride with Jacques Villeneuve again as he slides that Honda out to the side.
00:42:22Let's get an update from the McLaren pit, here's Peter.
00:42:25Thanks very much, Mike.
00:42:26Well, very, uh, confused state here at the moment,
00:42:29but we think DC has been given the stop-go penalty because he should have waited,
00:42:33or rather, the team should have waited for the grid to go out fully
00:42:37before they started him, to get him into that race.
00:42:39They, he, in fact, took up his correct grid position,
00:42:42and it appears as if he's going to get a stop-go penalty for that.
00:42:44Very, very bad luck for David Coulthard.
00:42:48Well, what can you say?
00:42:50Rules are rules, I guess, we all have to abide by them.
00:42:54I'm, I'll have to go through the rule book, Derek,
00:42:56but the yellow flag was waving at Coulthard's position.
00:42:58Nevertheless, though, they start the formation lap,
00:43:01and that car is supposed to wait until everyone's clear.
00:43:03Yeah, with either running, it either has to be gone,
00:43:05or it has to wait until the back of the group.
00:43:07Okay.
00:43:08Which he would have had to do if the mechanics hadn't been by the car,
00:43:11and then they'd have come over the wall and started it.
00:43:16We've completed 13 laps of 69 in the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:43:20Michael Schumacher leading, as David Coulthard's about to serve his penalty stop.
00:43:25You're watching Formula One on Fox Sportsnet.
00:43:34Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix,
00:43:37where Michael Schumacher now has an 18-second lead over the B.A.R. Honda.
00:43:41Of this man at the bottom of your screen, Jacques Villeneuve.
00:43:44David Coulthard has served his 10-second penalty...
00:43:51for the car not being ready at the start of the formation lap.
00:43:55Now, this is a penalty stop, so the mechanics are not allowed to work on the car.
00:44:00A long 10-seconds elapses,
00:44:03and Coulthard goes from 2nd place to 10th place as he exits the pit lane.
00:44:10That really is so tough for David. It's just what he doesn't need.
00:44:13Like Johnny Herbert coming in, then, in the pits.
00:44:18Coming in very, very slowly. He's not even bothering to go in front of the crew.
00:44:22He's parked in the middle of the track. I guess he's expired.
00:44:25Jack out and done. Johnny was doing remarkably well.
00:44:29Very, very sad day for Jacques, because he's not playing well at all.
00:44:32Now, Eddie Irvine is two laps back, as they had to start his car from the pit lane.
00:44:37And now, Herbert, after practicing very, very well, and qualifying decently in 11th,
00:44:42is going to the garage.
00:44:45Of course, poor old David Coulthard's problems have given Mika Hakkinen that extra bit of lift,
00:44:51because now that means he's the one that can go for the points.
00:44:54David is somewhat behind, although it's a long way to go.
00:44:57And actually, David is not that far behind.
00:44:59Oh, look at the move! Good move! Great move!
00:45:04Mika had the roof, thought he had a chance on there on Barrichello,
00:45:07and drew even with him, but had the outside going into the first of that two-turn complex.
00:45:12We have seen people go around the outside, but it's not easy at this level.
00:45:1619 seconds from Schumacher to Hakkinen.
00:45:19Mika Hakkinen, of course, needs to make this move, particularly now David's dropped back.
00:45:23David won't be far behind him.
00:45:24And the last thing Mika needs is David catching him up and having a go at Mika,
00:45:28or Mika having to pull over to let David by, because he's running quicker.
00:45:32And maybe it's payback time for Melbourne two years ago,
00:45:37when Mika Hakkinen was told that he could go by David Coulthard and take victory,
00:45:42and David abided by it and said, one day Mika will pay me back.
00:45:45He hasn't done so yet.
00:45:47But Michael Schumacher now enjoys a huge lead.
00:45:50It's been handed to him with the penalty to Coulthard.
00:45:5418 seconds.
00:45:55The arrows went very wide going to here, but he nearly outbrakes himself,
00:45:58as we say going into there, and dropped back too much.
00:46:02Yet he's still holding two and a half seconds on French,
00:46:04and you'll see the yellow Jordan there, top of your screen.
00:46:07Still well back of this group.
00:46:09Rubens Barrichello pulling out to try and protect that inside line from Mika Hakkinen,
00:46:12but I don't think Mika's going to do it just that simply and that quickly after that move.
00:46:17He's going to keep harrying you and wiring you, Rubens.
00:46:19Rubens looks in his mirrors, and in turn that might make him drop back just a little bit from Jacques.
00:46:25That's what Jacques Villeneuve needs.
00:46:27He needs Barrichello to be harried and hustled from behind,
00:46:30so that he can perhaps get some nice clean laps in and pull away.
00:46:34I can't believe how well that Arrows is going back there.
00:46:36That's tremendous.
00:46:38Just tremendous for them.
00:46:39Now here's another look at the lower left of your screen.
00:46:42There is David's mechanic still working at the rear of the car.
00:46:45They have it up in the air when Schumacher takes off,
00:46:48and now they clear the grid, and that is the infraction that produced the ten-second penalty.
00:46:53Because they're meant to go off simultaneously, and David didn't,
00:46:56and that's really the problem.
00:46:59Because they're meant to go off simultaneously, and David didn't,
00:47:02and that's really unfortunate.
00:47:04There's Johnny Herbert.
00:47:06Short day for Johnny.
00:47:09Still gets his paycheck, though.
00:47:11Good thing.
00:47:17Look at that. They were nose to tail in the center of the chicane,
00:47:20and look at how quickly Jacques Villeneuve pulls away from the rest of that pack under acceleration.
00:47:26As they said, it's been mooted possibly.
00:47:28Jacques is running a lighter load of fuel,
00:47:30therefore if we're coming for a two-stop strategy,
00:47:32she'll be in, and maybe with the next four or five laps, she'll come in for fuel.
00:47:36But of course, the other cars are getting lower on fuel too,
00:47:39which means they can go a bit quicker through the corners as well,
00:47:41and then we don't know what fuel strategy they're on.
00:47:44No, 23 laps would be one-third distance for the two-stoppers,
00:47:48and that's five laps away.
00:47:50And as I mentioned earlier, they do have this problem with the brakes,
00:47:52and if you can understand the extra weight of a full tank of fuel,
00:47:55which is 100 kilograms, which is 200 pounds of fuel,
00:48:00would make it very, very heavy indeed for the brakes,
00:48:02and if they could reduce that by having a two-stop strategy,
00:48:05they could save a lot of weight,
00:48:06and of course the physics of that don't need to be worked out.
00:48:10Transmission trouble has put Johnny Herbert's Jaguar out of the race.
00:48:16He is the only retiree thus far,
00:48:18although his teammate Eddie Irvine lost two laps.
00:48:22When his car would not move off the grid,
00:48:24and had to be started from the pit lane.
00:48:30Michael Schumacher with an 18-second lead
00:48:32over the B.A.R. Honda of Jacques Villeneuve,
00:48:35the Ferrari of Barrichello,
00:48:37the McLaren Mercedes of Mika Haakonen,
00:48:39and the Arrows of Pedro de la Rosa.
00:48:46One has to point out at this juncture
00:48:49that in fact, there will be some pit stops going on.
00:48:51We don't know whether Jacques is on that two-stop strategy,
00:48:53maybe some of the others are behind him,
00:48:55so they're not going to go crazy
00:48:56and risk going out of the race at this point,
00:48:58when, due to a pit stop,
00:49:00one might have a quicker pit stop than the other,
00:49:02and therefore come out in front.
00:49:03So I think we're going to wait and see after lap 23
00:49:05just what the form really is.
00:49:08One thing to point out too,
00:49:09is when Coulthard came in for his 10-second penalty,
00:49:11you're not allowed to service the vehicle at all.
00:49:14So therefore, although he came in,
00:49:15he couldn't top up the fuel and change tires,
00:49:17all he could do was wait and go.
00:49:19Great battle also back at 8th place,
00:49:21where Jarno Trulli is trying to hold off
00:49:24Verstappen and Coulthard,
00:49:26as they trail Riccardo Zonta.
00:49:28That's from 7th on back.
00:49:32Rubens Barrichello putting a little bit of extra pressure on
00:49:35Jacques Villeneuve now,
00:49:36as his car gets a bit lighter on fuel,
00:49:38right up behind him on the tighter corners back there.
00:49:41He might be looking to have a go at Jacques.
00:49:43Remember, if you run a low-force, low-downforce car,
00:49:46you cannot stop quite as efficiently.
00:49:48And as David Coulthard said the other day,
00:49:49it's probably about 20 yards is the difference
00:49:52between a high-downforce and a low-downforce set-up
00:49:54as far as breaking one another.
00:49:56Activity in the Arrows pit,
00:49:58as we're going to see pit stops when we come back.
00:50:0119 laps are completed in the Canadian Grand Prix
00:50:04on Fox Sportsnet.
00:50:13Michael Schumacher with a 21-second lead
00:50:15here in Montreal.
00:50:17Tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox Sportsnet,
00:50:19a special Father's Day edition of Sunday Night Fights,
00:50:22featuring the pro debut of Frida George Foreman
00:50:25and Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
00:50:27defends his championship ground.
00:50:29Sons and daughters of boxing legends
00:50:31on a special boxing card tonight.
00:50:37Rubens really looking at the inside of Jacques Villeneuve
00:50:39as they come down into there.
00:50:40David Coulthard you see now there
00:50:42as we ride with David as he comes up behind this group.
00:50:46Verstappen just ahead,
00:50:48and Trulli out in front of him in 7th place.
00:50:53Zonta, the first car in that group.
00:50:58And Zonta is some four seconds behind
00:51:015th place Frentzen.
00:51:04Here we ride with David Coulthard,
00:51:079th place.
00:51:09You can't do much about these other cars,
00:51:11it's quite phenomenal, you just cannot get by
00:51:13even with that long straight and that speed of the cars,
00:51:15and if it's the braking area that does it,
00:51:17there's no room to go by.
00:51:21Look at the way that Arrows pulls away.
00:51:27But David will catch them up in the corners.
00:51:44Schumacher's been pulling away one second a lap,
00:51:47he's 22 seconds ahead after 22 laps.
00:51:49That's pretty good going.
00:51:51Let's just hope the same problems don't befall him
00:51:53that happened to him at Monaco or befall him today.
00:51:55One would say highly unlikely,
00:51:57because this sort of stuff doesn't happen twice,
00:51:59but one never knows.
00:52:01Now you saw the graphic difference between Schumacher
00:52:03and Haakonen's lap time.
00:52:04See there that Haakonen, his third car in line,
00:52:07while Michael Schumacher's out in clean air.
00:52:14And Peter, we're seeing a few raindrops on the glass.
00:52:17That's correct, Mike, yes, it's raining here,
00:52:19people are scurrying for cover a little bit,
00:52:21it's not raining that hard,
00:52:22but interesting to note that this morning,
00:52:24in the warm-up this morning, the on-time practice,
00:52:26Michael Schumacher did a lap on wet tires,
00:52:29it was perfectly dry, just to scrub in a set of wets
00:52:32just in case it was wet.
00:52:33That's the sort of attention to detail
00:52:35we see from Michael Schumacher.
00:52:38Michael now with a 23.4 second lead on Jacques Villeneuve.
00:52:43David Coulthard was second off at the start
00:52:46and was right within striking distance of Schumacher,
00:52:48but Coulthard was penalized for his car not being able to go
00:52:52when the lights went for the formation lap.
00:52:59Here's a look at Schumacher's Canadian career.
00:53:01Three wins, four pulls, three fastest laps of the race,
00:53:05he's led 216 laps and has finished in the points
00:53:08in every Canadian Grand Prix he's contested,
00:53:11except last year.
00:53:14And even in his first Canadian Grand Prix,
00:53:16in 92 in the Benetton, or was it even the Jordan,
00:53:18he finished in second place.
00:53:21That's David Coulthard taking to the grass.
00:53:27Now, what you have to remember here,
00:53:29if it does start to come down with a little bit of rain,
00:53:31that grass is going to get very, very slippery,
00:53:33much more slippery than the track will
00:53:35until the track gets flooded.
00:53:36That's assuming it rains much.
00:53:37I can't believe it will rain that much.
00:53:39No, they're just, there are, it's a high overcast today.
00:53:42It's not really rainy weather.
00:53:44I can see why it was.
00:53:45He actually was perturbed by the guy in front
00:53:47who locked everything up, and David,
00:53:48and he did a complete 360.
00:53:50Great bit of driving.
00:53:51Whoa, was he close to hitting Verstappen?
00:53:53Verstappen lost it.
00:53:54David got completely caught up in what Verstappen was doing.
00:53:57Great, obviously, overbrake to avoid hitting him
00:53:59and spun himself.
00:54:00It was not his fault.
00:54:04And Verstappen will pit.
00:54:10Verstappen being serviced at lap 24.
00:54:14Well, after that, I'd want to be serviced, too.
00:54:17Here's Barrichello making the charge on Villeneuve.
00:54:20Had the inside at the first corner of that complex,
00:54:22side by side.
00:54:23The car jumps as it shifts,
00:54:25and will run down the end of the straightaway first.
00:54:28Villeneuve.
00:54:29But Rubens had to back out of it.
00:54:31He got a bit too carried away there,
00:54:33and Jack is not an easy man.
00:54:35He's probably the hardest man out there to overtake,
00:54:37apart from Schumacher,
00:54:38and he wasn't going to give Rubens an inch.
00:54:41You can bet your life if Rubens...
00:54:42Oh, here we go.
00:54:43He's giving him that inch now,
00:54:44and Rubens has gone down the inside.
00:54:46He really did upset Jacques' balance,
00:54:48and Jack's trying to get on the power
00:54:49to get inside him, coming out of the hairpin,
00:54:51but he can't do it,
00:54:52and Barrichello's away.
00:54:53Jacques got a bit more wheelspin.
00:54:55Now, let's see what Mika Hagen can do.
00:54:56He's got to go with that Ferrari.
00:54:59So, it's now Ferrari 1-2.
00:55:00Schumacher 25 seconds up on Rubens Barrichello.
00:55:04Let's join Peter with Johnny Herbert.
00:55:06Thank you very much, Mike.
00:55:07Yeah, Johnny, sad to be out of the race so early.
00:55:09Tell us what happened.
00:55:10Yeah, yeah.
00:55:11It's pretty frustrating.
00:55:13Well, early on, I started getting a few long shifts,
00:55:16long downshifts,
00:55:17and then it was getting a little bit nervous under braking,
00:55:20and then, when I dropped into the claws of Ralph,
00:55:23by then, I could get down to third gear,
00:55:25and obviously Ralph was obviously able to outdrag me,
00:55:28and then the next lap, I couldn't get lower than fourth,
00:55:30and then fifth,
00:55:31so it was a gearbox problem.
00:55:32But it's frustrating,
00:55:34because I had a better weekend in Monaco,
00:55:36and then that was basically destroyed in the race
00:55:39with unreliability problems in the race,
00:55:41and again, we've had another type of unreliability problem,
00:55:45so, you know, we've got to really change things.
00:55:47I think, obviously, Neil wrestles very well.
00:55:49What we need to do, it's going to take time,
00:55:51but it's going to come,
00:55:52and it's good that we know what needs to be done.
00:55:54Thank you very much, Johnny.
00:55:55Back to you, Mike.
00:55:56Johnny Herbert is the first of, now, two cars out of the race.
00:55:59Just Verstappen came to the pits after that ride
00:56:02through the gravel with David Coulthard,
00:56:05and Verstappen's car has been retired.
00:56:11One doesn't know, of course, whether he actually damaged the car.
00:56:13In fact, he might well have just had a gear jam up under braking,
00:56:16maybe something locked up to create that situation.
00:56:21There you go, Barry Keller already pulling away
00:56:24getting a second a lap on Villeneuve.
00:56:30Meanwhile, Michael, all alone out front,
00:56:33now by 27 seconds, due in large part to the penalty to Coulthard.
00:56:37And the two Jordans are getting close to one another,
00:56:39truly pushing very hard on Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:56:41You'll be asking, can I go by yet to Eddie Jordan?
00:56:44Eddie, I'm sure, will be saying,
00:56:45just bide your time, we've got to stop for fuel in the not-too-distant future.
00:56:48What will Mika Hakkinen do, in my opinion?
00:56:50He's got to try and get by.
00:56:52He can't let that Ferrari get away.
00:56:54But he doesn't seem, at this point, to be doing much about it.
00:56:56He saw exactly what Barry Keller did.
00:56:58He really upset Villeneuve's balance and his concentration.
00:57:03And these cars, Derek, are running 7 tenths of a second
00:57:05to a full second a lap slower than Michael Schumacher.
00:57:08So I agree, if Mika can, he's got to go.
00:57:11And for a stop, and they had pulled his car toward the garage,
00:57:21made some adjustments, and apparently they've unstuck.
00:57:25Whatever his problem was, he has rejoined the race.
00:57:31Oh, look, he goes truly down the inside.
00:57:33Great bit of overtaking on his teammate,
00:57:35but there's no way they were going to tangle.
00:57:37Truly goes by.
00:57:42What's happened to the look here?
00:57:49There we go, on the right of your picture is Frenzen,
00:57:51as they come into the casino hairpin.
00:57:53He gets plenty of room, but truly gets a bit sideways under braking
00:57:56at the end of it, and he goes through.
00:57:58Now he's going to try and pull away.
00:58:00Truly not going that well in qualifying,
00:58:02but he's running terribly well in the race,
00:58:04and actually has had the edge over Heinz-Arnold Frenzen
00:58:06most of the races this year.
00:58:08Already he's got something like 80 yards on him
00:58:10going into turn one.
00:58:12Now we may be able to see a great drive from Truly.
00:58:14He could have done so well, as we heard earlier,
00:58:16he could have won at Monaco.
00:58:18So let's just see how he goes in catching these guys up.
00:58:20But Mika Hakkinen has got to make that move.
00:58:22He's going to have Truly to contend with very shortly.
00:58:24Truly just set his personal fastest lap of the race
00:58:27at a minute 21.3.
00:58:32Schumacher lapping just under a minute 21.
00:58:36There are the two Jordans.
00:58:38Frenzen out-qualified Truly at this race,
00:58:41and just now gave up the position.
00:58:43And you see Truly really shooting away from Heinz-Arnold.
00:58:48So this battle now becomes third and fourth
00:58:50between Villeneuve and Hakkinen.
00:58:57David Coulthard seems to have dropped back
00:58:59behind John Alese and Ralph Schumacher.
00:59:01How's that happen? We didn't see that.
00:59:03No, back to 11th place.
00:59:07I guess he did, of course, when he went on the grass
00:59:09avoiding Verstappen.
00:59:11Yeah, he lost momentum and he lost those two positions.
00:59:15Well, Frenzen is now falling back into the clutches
00:59:17of Riccardo Zonta.
00:59:19As you watch third and fourth.
00:59:25And Barrichello lowers the fastest lap of the race standard
00:59:28as fuel loads dwindle.
00:59:31Barrichello has been very quick all weekend
00:59:33and he was most disturbed after qualifying.
00:59:35You can see his expression in the press conference.
00:59:37He just was not happy with the fact that I believe he said
00:59:40he didn't say Michael Schumacher, but everybody said it was.
00:59:43Just sort of just shut the door a bit on him
00:59:45on his quickest lap as Michael was slowing down,
00:59:47so Barrichello wasn't very happy.
00:59:50Look at Jarno Truly.
00:59:51Truly is making great inroads on Jack Villeneuve
00:59:54and Mika Hakkinen.
00:59:56Here he comes into frame.
01:00:01Jack Villeneuve's mechanics look on.
01:00:03He's lapping two or three tenths quicker.
01:00:06Three or four tenths quicker than these two in front.
01:00:08Remember, the reason for some of this is that Villeneuve
01:00:11is trying to fend off Hakkinen's advances at the corners
01:00:14when Hakkinen tries to look down the inside.
01:00:16He hasn't got the speed around the corners
01:00:18and then they get on the straight again.
01:00:19He has that contend with his power,
01:00:21but at the end of the straight has to back off again
01:00:23to look in his mirrors and try and fend off.
01:00:27Here we go on the straight, up to 200 miles an hour.
01:00:31We're going to look a little further back in the running order,
01:00:33back as far as Coulthard at the tail end of this group
01:00:36that includes Fisichella, Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi.
01:00:47Frentzen and Zonta at the front of that train.
01:00:51I think we're in a situation here
01:00:52with Barrichello getting the quickest lap.
01:00:54Actually, he's got all to go for.
01:00:56Nothing much to lose.
01:00:57He's fractionally quicker than Michael Schumacher.
01:00:59Schumacher is some 29 seconds, 26 seconds ahead of Barrichello.
01:01:03That's a long way in racing terms
01:01:05and you can bet your life Schumacher is controlling his aggression
01:01:09at the moment, trying to keep it very cool.
01:01:17So Michael Schumacher has a 26 second lead now
01:01:20on his Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello.
01:01:22Then Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen and Jarno Trulli.
01:01:2629 laps are complete here in Montreal.
01:01:34Welcome back to Montreal
01:01:35where Michael Schumacher's lead is now 26 seconds
01:01:37over Rubens Barrichello.
01:01:39Nightly at 10 and 12, the all-new National Sports Report
01:01:41gives you a complete wrap-up of the day's sports news
01:01:44with internet interaction, scores, highlights and opinions
01:01:47nightly at 10 and 12, only on Fox Sportsnet.
01:01:53Fastest lap of the race, trading back and forth
01:01:55between Schumacher and Barrichello as fuel loads go down
01:01:59and we are probably four to eight laps away from pit stops.
01:02:11No one wants to see that time come up sooner
01:02:14than Mika Hakkinen who has been trapped here behind
01:02:17Jacques Villeneuve fighting to understeer off that corner.
01:02:22And Hakkinen unable to do anything with it
01:02:25for the entire 32 laps thus far.
01:02:27Jarno Trulli though has caught that group.
01:02:32Mika having a look.
01:02:33No, he can't have a go.
01:02:35That's right with Jacques again,
01:02:36through the finale for the last turns.
01:02:43190 miles an hour as he brakes for turn one.
01:02:5325 seconds from Schumacher.
01:02:58Back, he's beginning to lap slower cars.
01:03:00That's Matsukane's Minardi just ahead.
01:03:08So at 32 laps, Schumacher who led from the start
01:03:12had David Coulthard with him until
01:03:15DC had to serve a 10-second penalty
01:03:17and now there's activity in the Ferrari pit.
01:03:22Not quite halfway, which would be on the 35th circuit.
01:03:29But Michael now with 25 seconds worth of lead
01:03:33and now being held up by the Minardi
01:03:35who finally moves aside.
01:03:39So pit stop's imminent.
01:03:44A little movement in the McLaren pit as well
01:03:46but they are not set up as Ferraris.
01:03:52And...
01:03:57Barrichello now has moved down to 10 seconds
01:03:59over the Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli.
01:04:04Group running third, fourth and fifth.
01:04:10Ferrari team really are ready in that pit for this stop.
01:04:13Remember chief mechanic Nigel Stepney used to hold
01:04:15to put that fuel filler on.
01:04:1740 pounds it weighs, that big end of that fuel hose
01:04:20as he puts it in.
01:04:21Here we come for a Jordan stop.
01:04:25Heinz-Harald comes in and they weren't ready for him.
01:04:27The Jordan crew runs out into the pit lane.
01:04:30They did not expect him.
01:04:31They don't have tires out.
01:04:33Here come the tire carriers.
01:04:36It's obviously a last minute stop.
01:04:37I've got to come in.
01:04:38There's something wrong as he comes down the road.
01:04:40He was dropping back a lot.
01:04:47And Schumacher is in.
01:04:50The race leader in the pit lane
01:04:52as they finish up a long stop for Frentzen.
01:04:56Oh, a long, long time getting the right rear on.
01:04:59Set the car down and he may not be going anywhere.
01:05:01They're doing some adjustments to the front wing.
01:05:03He's probably got a bit of push too much understeer
01:05:05so they're giving him a little bit more front wing.
01:05:07Refueling.
01:05:10Good stop, nine and a half seconds.
01:05:15Comes up behind Rubens Barrichello, his teammate
01:05:17who will be in in the next couple of laps.
01:05:20Sorry, Heinz-Harald's not going anywhere.
01:05:22They've pushed his Jordan back to the garage.
01:05:24They found a problem on the car
01:05:26when they were trying to refit the right rear tire
01:05:28and Frentzen has retired from the race.
01:05:35Mika Hakkinen has passed Jacques Villeneuve.
01:05:38Is that?
01:05:40And Vignano Trulli, yes.
01:05:42He's working Jacques as well now.
01:05:45Mika needed to do that some little while ago
01:05:47because he is a long way back.
01:05:53Michael Schumacher, which has done his pit stop.
01:05:57This is the pass.
01:05:58Great bit of overtaking, locking up that inside wheel
01:06:01as they go into, I think, to turn one.
01:06:04Here we go.
01:06:05No, sorry.
01:06:07Great bit of overtaking by Mika.
01:06:09Lovely job.
01:06:11Ooh, that didn't look good.
01:06:13A puff of smoke out the back of the Brosk.
01:06:15Heitfeld makes his stop at lap 34.
01:06:17Ooh, that's like clouds of smoke
01:06:19unless that was rubber smoke
01:06:21and I don't think...
01:06:22Well, it might have been.
01:06:23To me, there's a lot of smoke for rubber tires.
01:06:25His teammate Alessi...
01:06:26Oh, he's a light.
01:06:27It's time for him to get out.
01:06:28Sorry, Mike.
01:06:29Time for Heitfeld to get out.
01:06:30This is exactly what he had the day before yesterday.
01:06:33His car caught a light then, too.
01:06:35It didn't actually catch a light.
01:06:36They managed to put the fire out.
01:06:39He's still in the pit lane.
01:06:41Come on, guys.
01:06:42Let's put a fire extinguisher on it.
01:06:43Let's get some speed here going.
01:06:45These guys aren't going to get down there
01:06:46with a fire extinguisher in time.
01:06:48This is really very, very poor.
01:06:50Somebody should be right there.
01:06:52Very, very dangerous
01:06:53and very disorganized.
01:06:55Disarray, I would say.
01:06:57He's about to lose a million-dollar car.
01:06:59There's a fire truck not 30 feet from that,
01:07:01but as he is still out in the pit lane,
01:07:03they're a bit reluctant to send him.
01:07:05Well, the safety car's moving forward
01:07:07and the car is just quietly burning away
01:07:09in his exhaust pipe.
01:07:10They're very lucky.
01:07:11I think it's just the residual oil
01:07:12in the exhaust pipe where it blew up
01:07:14is just burning quite quietly.
01:07:16Nobody seems particularly bothered.
01:07:18Mind you, Heitfeld probably could have put
01:07:20his own fire extinguisher system on,
01:07:22which could have taken care of it.
01:07:23Here he comes.
01:07:24The safety car has got the fire extinguisher
01:07:26and he's going to give it a squirt.
01:07:28Let's not put it everywhere, boys,
01:07:29because it's...
01:07:30Oh, he's having a good go anyway.
01:07:32But he makes such a mess of that engine compartment.
01:07:35You saw a bit of Heinz-Harald Franssen's problems
01:07:37that led to his unexpected pit stop,
01:07:39but now he's out of the race.
01:07:40Peter?
01:07:41Yes, Mike.
01:07:42It looks as if it was some sort of brake problem
01:07:44on the Jordan.
01:07:45We don't know precisely what sort of brake problem,
01:07:47but as we know, brakes get a very, very hard test
01:07:50here in Montreal.
01:07:52Jean Alesu set to come in this lap.
01:07:55For Prost, there is Heitfeld walking back
01:07:57after a very, very difficult weekend.
01:08:00Interesting. Not interesting,
01:08:01but I guess it is a little bit interesting,
01:08:03the fact that we were talking to these
01:08:04very Jordan mechanics this morning
01:08:06about that very problem,
01:08:08that the brakes were marginal.
01:08:10And here we are, just over halfway,
01:08:12and they're out of the race.
01:08:14So no wonder they have that extra little pipe
01:08:15trying to cool the brakes down.
01:08:21Hacken has done the quickest lap of 119.3.
01:08:24Super time.
01:08:26Here's Jean Alesu.
01:08:29You see the size of those brake ducts
01:08:31as they remove the left front tire.
01:08:33That's the maximum allowed by the regulations.
01:08:37Brake and hub cooling.
01:08:38And there's Nick Heitfeld walking.
01:08:39Oh, they're going to have to pick up Alesu.
01:08:41He's gesturing wildly.
01:08:43Start the engine again.
01:08:44Installed it.
01:08:45So they've got to put the air in.
01:08:46Pump it up.
01:08:49Dear, oh, dear, oh, dear.
01:08:52Jean Alesu, his only win in his life in Formula 1
01:08:55was in this very Grand Prix in 1995 for Ferrari.
01:08:59As this goes, Heitfeld's blow up.
01:09:01And Nick thinks, I don't think I can go out on the track.
01:09:03It's a long walk home.
01:09:04Let's park it here before he realizes it's a light.
01:09:06But it's exactly what he did two days ago.
01:09:10He's had a very miserable time with Frost.
01:09:12He's really under contract to McLaren,
01:09:14was their test driver last year,
01:09:16as well as being the European Formula 3000 driver,
01:09:18winner of the championship.
01:09:20Very talented young man,
01:09:21but sometimes you go to a poor team like Frost
01:09:23and it really ruins your confidence for the future.
01:09:26Yes, and a bunch of the criticism of Heitfeld's season
01:09:28has been landed at the feet of the team
01:09:31and not the driver.
01:09:3438 laps were working.
01:09:37Rubens Barrichello took over the lead
01:09:39from his teammate, Michael Schumacher.
01:09:41When Schumacher made what we expect
01:09:43would be his only pit stop.
01:09:47Great shot into Michael's visor there.
01:09:49Saw him at the work desk, as we call it.
01:09:51But Michael's laps aren't that quick
01:09:53since he's been out.
01:09:54Hacken is going quicker and so is Barrichello.
01:09:56Yeah, Hacken, you see on lap 37,
01:09:58fastest lap at 119.0.
01:10:03And he's within four and a half seconds
01:10:05of Michael Schumacher.
01:10:06Schumacher's on a full load of fuel.
01:10:08Hacken should be nearly gone.
01:10:10But the one thing we must point out
01:10:11is often they frequently don't go out
01:10:12on a fresh set of tires to do very quick laps.
01:10:14But the reason for it today
01:10:15is that we know they're running
01:10:16a slightly harder compound.
01:10:18Well, not harder compound.
01:10:19They can't get a compound any softer.
01:10:22And this is the problem they're having.
01:10:23They can't get the heat into the tires.
01:10:25It's a non-abrasive surface here.
01:10:27Surface.
01:10:28And therefore, you're not getting
01:10:29that immediate response.
01:10:30It takes several laps to get those tires to work.
01:10:33Let's ride with, uh,
01:10:35Jack Villeneuve.
01:10:48He's trying to hold off Jarno, truly,
01:10:49and we expect within the next two laps
01:10:51we'll see Villeneuve in the pit lane.
01:10:55Oh, yeah.
01:11:04Poor Derek, he just pounds those curbs, doesn't he?
01:11:06Oh, yeah.
01:11:08Really bashes them.
01:11:10You can't knock all the curbs that hard.
01:11:11Some of them you can hit extremely hard.
01:11:13This is the BAR pit.
01:11:15Everybody about to go outside
01:11:17and get ready for a stop.
01:11:18Can't be long now.
01:11:26Just to give you an idea
01:11:28of the speed differential between Villeneuve
01:11:30and some of the cars he's been running,
01:11:32Mika Hakkinen passed him, what, three laps ago
01:11:35and has moved seven seconds ahead of Villeneuve.
01:11:39So two plus seconds per lap.
01:11:42And truly, really catching him up under braking,
01:11:45coming into the casino hairpin.
01:11:46Well, here's Jordan coming out to service truly.
01:11:49Next time on...
01:11:56Ah!
01:11:59Matsukane has made his pit stop.
01:12:02Oh, and he comes straight in.
01:12:03He's in this lap, is truly.
01:12:05Straight in the pit stop.
01:12:07Person walking around there.
01:12:08Better move out of the way.
01:12:09Truly's coming down.
01:12:1050 mile an hour speed limit
01:12:11as he comes down the pit lane.
01:12:12He's cleaning his visor off
01:12:13with the leather palm of his gloves
01:12:15because he will have a little bit of dampness there
01:12:17and a bit of dirt.
01:12:18Won't be too bad.
01:12:20Eight men on the right side of the car,
01:12:22ten men on the left side of the car,
01:12:24involved in the servicing.
01:12:30Good start.
01:12:31Jordan had a lot of problems with gearboxes this year.
01:12:34One gearbox costs $110,000.
01:12:37Can you imagine that?
01:12:38Think of the cost of that.
01:12:40And they go through one each race.
01:12:42If not two.
01:12:55Michael Schumacher being caught up.
01:12:58Now by Mika Hakkinen.
01:13:00Just about a second and a half.
01:13:01Separate them.
01:13:03The difference is that one has made his pit stop,
01:13:06the other not.
01:13:07Slow roller down there
01:13:08underneath that spectator bridge.
01:13:11And that might have been a lazy going
01:13:13and retiring at the same place
01:13:15where he retired from the qualifying session
01:13:18with a blown engine.
01:13:25It's amazing that McLarens aren't actually
01:13:28setting up for a pit stop yet.
01:13:30They obviously are on a very heavy load,
01:13:32which in my book means that they can come in
01:13:35and probably pick up a little less fuel
01:13:37to run to the end of the race when they do.
01:13:39Which means they'll run with a lighter load
01:13:41and can go that bit faster,
01:13:43despite what various of our viewers think.
01:13:45And we're getting a little more rain on the window here
01:13:49as we saw De La Rosa come in.
01:13:52We saw De La Rosa come in.
01:13:54And I think Mika Salo
01:13:56also making stops here at lap 40.
01:14:04That would be De La Rosa's second pit stop.
01:14:11And he and Salo both exit after routine stops.
01:14:15Mark Junaid also stopping.
01:14:22Well, Derek, if this sprinkle turns to a drizzle,
01:14:26I wonder how that will affect things.
01:14:29Well, we saw how it went in the European Grand Prix
01:14:32at Nürburgring and how incredibly well Schumacher drove
01:14:35in those conditions where he actually overtook Hacken
01:14:37and reveled in that sort of difficult intermediary stage
01:14:41in the weather.
01:14:42I don't know if you noticed, as they braked
01:14:44at the end of the big straight there,
01:14:46I saw the brakes,
01:14:48and I thought,
01:14:51I saw the brake dust, that carbon brake dust,
01:14:53absolutely pouring out of those front brakes
01:14:56and rear brakes on Schumacher's and Hacken's car.
01:15:01And that's entirely normal.
01:15:02The purpose of the brakes is to take that speed
01:15:05and use the friction to create some heat
01:15:08and haul those cars down from speed.
01:15:10And the end result is that both the disc and the pads
01:15:13get a bit of air, and that's what you see.
01:15:15Must mention something here,
01:15:16which I don't think we talked about before,
01:15:18is in fact that Ferrari have a lighter setup
01:15:21of brake pads and calipers, which they use for qualifying,
01:15:24which saves them something like 10 pounds
01:15:26on each corner of the car,
01:15:27sends a tremendous amount of weight
01:15:28as Jenson Button comes in.
01:15:37Button in at lap 41.
01:15:39Started the race way back in 18th position.
01:15:42They had fuel pickup problems in qualifying.
01:15:45Ten and a half seconds,
01:15:47and here comes McLaren out from the garage.
01:15:50Their 500th Grand Prix.
01:15:53And now they're setting up, presumably,
01:15:56for Mika Hakkinen.
01:15:57In fact, there's 500 of them
01:15:58about to pounce on the car, too, doesn't it?
01:16:00That it does.
01:16:04A larger crew than Jordan.
01:16:06Eight men on the right side of the car.
01:16:1014 on the left side of the car.
01:16:13And the man in front with the jack.
01:16:16Makes sports cars look a bit sick
01:16:17when you're allowed to have four people working on it.
01:16:20At Le Mans.
01:16:26Nine and a half seconds.
01:16:27Nice stop for Mika.
01:16:28Comes out behind David Coulthard,
01:16:30who has yet to stop.
01:16:33Oh, dear.
01:16:34Jenson letting Rubens Barrichello go by.
01:16:38And now Ferrari is setting up for Barrichello.
01:16:44Yeah!
01:16:50Ralf Schumacher has made his stop on this lap, 42.
01:16:57And Pedro Diniz, as well.
01:17:05Amazing to see those two B.A.R.s up there
01:17:07in third and fourth place.
01:17:08Absolutely fantastic.
01:17:10Well, they're finally delivering all that they promised.
01:17:13And the rain is coming down quite a bit heavier now,
01:17:16as Barrichello's in the pit lane.
01:17:21And as that's said, McLaren comes back out
01:17:24to service David Coulthard.
01:17:27Here's Rubens.
01:17:37Nine and a half seconds stops for both
01:17:39Hocken and Schumacher.
01:17:40Barrichello's stop considerably quicker at 8.7.
01:17:50Riccardo Zonta.
01:17:53In the B.A.R.
01:17:54And Coulthard is also in.
01:18:04Zonta away as Coulthard rolls to a stop.
01:18:10Good stop by McLaren.
01:18:118.6 seconds.
01:18:12Zonta, you may or may not know,
01:18:14was the world sports car champion
01:18:16a couple of years ago, racing for Mercedes.
01:18:22Oh, and things look like they're getting a bit slick.
01:18:25Now this has become a drizzle.
01:18:29And Michael Schumacher cycles back to the lead
01:18:32with the pit stop by Barrichello.
01:18:34And Michael Schumacher cycles back to the lead
01:18:37with the pit stop by Barrichello.
01:18:40Here's a look at Jacques Villeneuve
01:18:41having an off.
01:18:47A little rain-induced lock-up, perhaps?
01:18:49Yeah, he didn't see me locked up.
01:18:50I think, in a way, he didn't want to lock up,
01:18:52but he could see there was a way to go through there,
01:18:54that famous last turn.
01:18:56But it cost him dear.
01:19:00Ooh, dear, it is getting slippery.
01:19:02Look at those two there
01:19:03having a wild moment.
01:19:04Very difficult to keep on line.
01:19:06Now, when it gets like this,
01:19:07it gets wet like this,
01:19:08it's a very good idea, actually,
01:19:10to go off-line and ride out wider,
01:19:12because you have a bit more traction,
01:19:13more grip out wide, off-line.
01:19:15Here's Villeneuve to pit at lap 44.
01:19:21Now, it's not that the track is that wet,
01:19:23but as you run through a race weekend,
01:19:25that's one of the...
01:19:26That's De La Rosa off.
01:19:28As you run through a race weekend,
01:19:30the track accumulates rubber
01:19:32and also a bit of oil,
01:19:33so it's the first raindrops
01:19:35that really make the track quite slippery,
01:19:37as the water mixes with whatever oil
01:19:39has been misted onto the circuit
01:19:41from all the cars running on it.
01:19:43So Villeneuve finishes his stop.
01:19:45He goes out behind Fizzi Keller,
01:19:47who he was, in fact, in front of.
01:19:49Yes.
01:19:54So Michael Schumacher
01:19:56has resumed the lead.
01:19:57There's Eddie Irvine
01:19:59coming in along with Verstappen,
01:20:00and we'll be back.
01:20:01You're watching Formula 1
01:20:02on Fox Sportsnet.
01:20:09You can see the rain falling here in Montreal.
01:20:11It has become a wet-weather race.
01:20:13Ferrari has been in.
01:20:15Coulthard has been in for McLaren.
01:20:17As you see Irvine there,
01:20:18spinning.
01:20:19Yarno Trulli has been in,
01:20:20and there was a mix-up at Ferrari.
01:20:22Let's show you first Michael Schumacher's stop,
01:20:26which was fairly routine.
01:20:31You see all the teams are out,
01:20:33getting set to fit rain tires.
01:20:38Now, Ferrari had expected Rubens Barrichello
01:20:40to come in one lap later.
01:20:42So Schumacher goes away,
01:20:44and they look up, and here's Barrichello.
01:20:46They don't have the rain tires out,
01:20:47and at the ready,
01:20:48they have to shove a cameraman out of the way.
01:20:51As Rubens comes in there,
01:20:52the tires are off.
01:20:54They had to run back for the rain.
01:20:55And they're trying to set up,
01:20:56they're adjusting to give him
01:20:57some extra downforce
01:20:59for the wet conditions.
01:21:00Here come the tires.
01:21:02So back live with you,
01:21:03as here's Mika Hakkinen.
01:21:05Mika Hakkinen's give-and-might
01:21:06would have lost a lot of time in that.
01:21:09He moved up to second place,
01:21:11but you're right, Derek.
01:21:12Skating around on dry tires
01:21:14when he needed wets
01:21:15will cost him.
01:21:17Fisichella,
01:21:18coming up to second place now
01:21:20with Hakkinen's pit stop.
01:21:21Barrichello third,
01:21:23and Hakkinen comes out in fourth.
01:21:27Ahead of Yarno Trulli,
01:21:28Alexander Wirtz,
01:21:29Jacques Wilder,
01:21:31Ben Verstappen,
01:21:32and Ralf Schumacher.
01:21:37So again,
01:21:38variable conditions,
01:21:39and now you see how very wet it is
01:21:41in certain parts of the circuit,
01:21:43down there at the casino hairpin.
01:21:45Look at them,
01:21:46trying to get tracks to see.
01:21:47You'll find Schumacher
01:21:48is not running on the perfect line
01:21:51for the dry.
01:21:52He's trying to get that
01:21:54inside line or the outside line,
01:21:56whatever it happens to be,
01:21:57just so that he doesn't slide off.
01:21:58Here's a shot of Fisichella
01:22:00having a pretty wild moment there.
01:22:02Point out at this point that Wirtz,
01:22:03his teammate,
01:22:04has yet to come in for his second stop,
01:22:06so he'll have to come in
01:22:07and get his Eddie Irvine,
01:22:08who was way back,
01:22:09can't turn in,
01:22:10so he says,
01:22:11thanks very much,
01:22:12I'm not doing that wall headfirst,
01:22:13the famous wall.
01:22:14And here he is out on the dirt.
01:22:20And Schumacher goes off,
01:22:22right across the dirt.
01:22:23Nobody's immune.
01:22:24He's at...
01:22:26It's a casino.
01:22:28Remember, this is not a circuit
01:22:30that's used regularly
01:22:31like a real racetrack,
01:22:32if it's a fair thing to say.
01:22:34So the track will be lethal,
01:22:35because it's such a smooth surface,
01:22:37there is so little traction.
01:22:38And these guys have got to be
01:22:39the survival of the fittest.
01:22:40You've got to keep off those white lines,
01:22:42off those curbs,
01:22:43because the water does not permeate
01:22:44those at all.
01:22:45And you're going to have to drive
01:22:46offline to try and get
01:22:47a rougher bit of surface.
01:22:48But because it is a sort of a permanent,
01:22:52but like a street circuit,
01:22:53there is no offline,
01:22:54which has got an aggravated surface,
01:22:56so there is no grip out there.
01:22:58So wherever you go,
01:22:59it's going to be slippery.
01:23:00Let's get an update on Benetton from Peter.
01:23:03Hi, Mike.
01:23:04Yes.
01:23:05Very good news for the Benetton team here.
01:23:07The stops they made,
01:23:08one-stop strategy,
01:23:09coincided perfectly with the rain.
01:23:11And they're both out on wet,
01:23:12which is why you see Fizzy Keller
01:23:13currently running second
01:23:15and Alex Wurtz in sixth place.
01:23:17So sometimes,
01:23:19luck becomes part of strategy.
01:23:21And indeed,
01:23:23a fortunate day for Benetton
01:23:25in that regard.
01:23:26Schumacher leads Barrichello now
01:23:28by 32 seconds.
01:23:29Fizzy Keller is just two seconds back
01:23:32of Barrichello.
01:23:33It's 18 seconds further back
01:23:35to Mika Hakanen,
01:23:36and then five back to Jarno Trulli,
01:23:38which puts Trulli and Wurtz
01:23:39one minute behind Michael Schumacher.
01:23:41But lap times have climbed now.
01:23:43They were running at about
01:23:44a minute 19, minute 20 seconds.
01:23:46And here in the rain,
01:23:48around the minute 40 second mark,
01:23:50except for Schumacher,
01:23:52who's lapping four seconds faster than that.
01:23:54You're going to see some brilliant driving
01:23:55from these two guys here,
01:23:56Barrichello and Fizzy Keller.
01:23:58Both outrageously good in the wet.
01:24:00We've seen some astounding,
01:24:02stirring drives by Fizzy Keller,
01:24:03particularly at Spa two years ago,
01:24:05when he was right behind Schumacher.
01:24:07He did some wonderful racing there.
01:24:08We got it again today.
01:24:10Barrichello was very quick in the rain
01:24:11when he finished second at Monaco
01:24:13three years ago for Stuart Ford
01:24:15before it became Jaguar.
01:24:16They're both superb drivers in the wet.
01:24:18And of course, we saw Hakanen
01:24:19driving probably the best drive of his life
01:24:21in my book at the European Grand Prix
01:24:23at Nürburgring about five, six weeks ago
01:24:26to keep very close to Michael Schumacher.
01:24:33Look at those conditions.
01:24:34Go down the inside.
01:24:35You can take those liberties.
01:24:36There'll be a lot more overtaking going on now.
01:24:41Schumacher's lapping some three seconds a lap
01:24:43slower than Barrichello at this point,
01:24:46but he is 29 seconds ahead
01:24:47and he's not going to take any chances
01:24:49with that sort of a lead,
01:24:50particularly with his teammate behind,
01:24:52who I'm sure will not be permitted
01:24:53to overtake him if he caught him up
01:24:55with such an important part of the championship
01:24:57to come along.
01:24:59You can see the rain light
01:25:01on the back of the cars,
01:25:02which is obligatory
01:25:03when it's in rainy conditions.
01:25:07And Mika doing his best to catch up
01:25:09to Fizzy Keller,
01:25:10but there's 18 seconds between them.
01:25:13Her third back to fourth.
01:25:15And they're doing pretty much
01:25:16identical times.
01:25:18In fact, Fizzy Keller was 0.5 quicker
01:25:19that lap, or 0.5 slower,
01:25:21should I say.
01:25:22Well, if there was a hard luck award
01:25:23for the day,
01:25:25the early contender would be
01:25:26David Coulthard.
01:25:28This was Fizzy Keller
01:25:30getting out wide,
01:25:31getting on the marbles,
01:25:32and then sliding out onto the dirt.
01:25:34Look how easy it is
01:25:35to slide in these cars.
01:25:36I mean, all you can do
01:25:37is try and keep that wheel
01:25:38facing forward.
01:25:39Don't put too much lock on
01:25:40and do not hit the brakes.
01:25:42You have to be so careful
01:25:43with the brakes,
01:25:44easing them on.
01:25:45Now, he had 18 seconds
01:25:46on Mika Hakan,
01:25:47and so Fizzy Keller
01:25:48will hold on to third,
01:25:50despite that little bit
01:25:51of incident.
01:25:53Coulthard's day started off
01:25:54after a great warm-up
01:25:56and a relaxed interview
01:25:57with Peter,
01:25:58but here, getting set
01:25:59for the formation lap,
01:26:00the mechanics are working
01:26:01past the time, doesn't he?
01:26:02You see all the other mechanics
01:26:03off the grid
01:26:04as Schumacher storms away,
01:26:06so David had to come in
01:26:07and serve a 10-second penalty,
01:26:09and he now finds himself
01:26:10in ninth place
01:26:13after this.
01:26:14Oh, dear.
01:26:15That was David when he went off
01:26:16with Verstappen.
01:26:17Sorry about that.
01:26:23So it's been a tough day
01:26:24for Coulthard,
01:26:25who had hoped to widen
01:26:26the five-point gap
01:26:27over his teammate,
01:26:28Mika Hakan,
01:26:29in the world championship
01:26:30point standings.
01:26:34So we're at 49 laps complete,
01:26:3520 to go.
01:26:37Looks like one of the, uh...
01:26:38Oh, yeah.
01:26:40Yeah, De La Rosa
01:26:41has narrowed up the arrows
01:26:43both at the right front
01:26:45and the right rear.
01:26:46He has slid into something
01:26:47quite hard.
01:26:49That's a pity,
01:26:50having shown such incredible form
01:26:51earlier in the race.
01:26:52And he's not going to make it
01:26:53back to the pits for repair
01:26:54as Schumacher storms by.
01:26:58So when you need the old ABS,
01:26:59then it works really well
01:27:01as we lock brakes.
01:27:06Here we go.
01:27:07We see him getting
01:27:08a little bit sideways.
01:27:09He can't turn into the corner.
01:27:11Runs across the grass.
01:27:14Ooh, dear, dear, dear.
01:27:15But this wasn't room for two,
01:27:16was there, in the wet?
01:27:17And that just pushes him
01:27:18in the wall.
01:27:20Oh, there he goes.
01:27:22Saves it there.
01:27:24Too late.
01:27:25Damage is done.
01:27:26Sure is.
01:27:28And there's Eddie Irvine
01:27:29who has come to grief
01:27:30with a spin.
01:27:32At least he gets it going again.
01:27:33Yes.
01:27:34Nürburgring, he, uh,
01:27:35did the same thing
01:27:36and hit the barrier.
01:27:37Oh, nosing it again
01:27:38as he puts the power down.
01:27:39He lost a bit.
01:27:41Way to go.
01:27:43Waiting for Eddie
01:27:44to come out of that corner
01:27:45and he's not gonna be there
01:27:46for a while.
01:27:47Here he goes.
01:27:49Lose it that way.
01:27:50Spins it round.
01:27:51A 180,
01:27:52then up nearly to a 360.
01:27:53Puts it down again.
01:27:55Kessler's selected the gear.
01:27:56Remember, he has a gear shift.
01:27:57And that was the second
01:27:58part of his lose.
01:28:00And, of course, he's trying
01:28:01to find reverse gear
01:28:02to back out of it.
01:28:03Remember, all the gear shifting
01:28:04is done on paddles
01:28:05on the steering wheel.
01:28:06Very difficult to find
01:28:07that neutral gear
01:28:08when the engine's all hot.
01:28:0950 of 69 laps complete.
01:28:10Michael Schumacher
01:28:11leads his Ferrari teammate
01:28:12Rubens Barrichello
01:28:13now by 27 seconds.
01:28:15You're watching
01:28:16Formula One
01:28:17on Fox Sportsnet.
01:28:23Welcome back to a now
01:28:24very wet Canadian Grand Prix
01:28:25from the Benetton Garage
01:28:27where the rain actually
01:28:28has shone on this team.
01:28:29Giancarlo Fisichella
01:28:31again looking very good
01:28:32on this circuit.
01:28:33Lying third,
01:28:34his teammate Alec Vert,
01:28:35sixth.
01:28:36That's because both drivers
01:28:37came in from a single fuel stop
01:28:39just as it started to rain
01:28:40they switched to wet.
01:28:41They're the only two drivers
01:28:42in the race
01:28:43to have made only one stop.
01:28:44Everybody else
01:28:45has had to stop again
01:28:46for wet tires.
01:28:47They're looking very, very good
01:28:48again for Benetton
01:28:49in Canada.
01:28:51Thanks, Peter.
01:28:52You just saw
01:28:53Joss Verstappen's arrows
01:28:54move past Ralph Schumacher.
01:28:55Been a long, long time
01:28:56since both Benettons
01:28:57finished a race
01:28:58in the points
01:28:59and they are right now
01:29:00running third and sixth.
01:29:02Fisichella third
01:29:03and Alex Vert's in sixth.
01:29:08The replay of the
01:29:09Verstappen pass.
01:29:11Super bit of driving
01:29:12behind, but he outbrakes
01:29:14the Williams into the turn.
01:29:16Mind you, just before that
01:29:17both Verstappen
01:29:19and the car in front of him
01:29:20both got off at another corner
01:29:21and stretched straight
01:29:22across the grass
01:29:23at turn one and two.
01:29:24So, therefore,
01:29:25they lost that position
01:29:26to the Williams
01:29:27at that point.
01:29:28Now they gained it back.
01:29:29As you can see,
01:29:30there's the Benetton
01:29:31followed by Verstappen
01:29:32followed by the Williams.
01:29:34And they're trying
01:29:35to catch Alex Vert
01:29:36because that's where
01:29:37the last championship point is
01:29:38at the moment.
01:29:39Blue car of Vert's
01:29:40just ahead
01:29:41running in sixth place.
01:29:42David Coulthard
01:29:43is very close behind.
01:29:44In fact, David,
01:29:45if he got his act together,
01:29:46he's not far behind.
01:29:47He's one second
01:29:48behind Verstappen.
01:29:50Sorry, behind Schumacher,
01:29:51one second behind
01:29:52Verstappen,
01:29:53another second behind Vert.
01:29:54If he was to really get on it,
01:29:55he could probably get up
01:29:56to sixth place
01:29:57and get a point,
01:29:58which is really
01:29:59what he needs today.
01:30:00But Vert's is going to be
01:30:01quite tenacious.
01:30:02He has not scored a point
01:30:03yet this season.
01:30:04Look, let's ride
01:30:05with Jacques Villeneuve
01:30:06in the rain
01:30:07because he's
01:30:08behind the steering,
01:30:09just cannot get the grip.
01:30:10Now he's coming down.
01:30:11You just imagine
01:30:12trying to get 790 horsepower.
01:30:13You can hear the wheels spin.
01:30:14So what they do
01:30:15is they actually
01:30:16shift early.
01:30:17They don't go
01:30:18to maximum revs.
01:30:19They short shift,
01:30:20as we call it,
01:30:21try and get it
01:30:22in the meat of the power
01:30:23and just let the tires
01:30:24take you through it.
01:30:25If you use all the revs,
01:30:26you're going to get it
01:30:27locking up to
01:30:28spinning the wheels.
01:30:29Now the length of Villeneuve's
01:30:30pit stop has put him
01:30:31behind David Coulthard,
01:30:32so Jacques now finds himself
01:30:33in tenth place.
01:30:34That's the rain light
01:30:35of Coulthard
01:30:37They run out of the points
01:30:38in ninth and tenth.
01:30:39After running the first part
01:30:40of this race
01:30:41in second and third.
01:30:48Coulthard, remember,
01:30:49served a ten-second
01:30:50penalty stop for his car
01:30:51not being ready in time
01:30:52for the formation lap.
01:30:55And Villeneuve ran third
01:30:56for much of the day
01:30:57until his pit stop.
01:31:07You just dare not
01:31:08get on those white lines,
01:31:09you dare not get on the curbs,
01:31:10you dare not run over
01:31:11the white lines
01:31:12onto the run-off areas
01:31:13because they are so slippery,
01:31:14they're like ice.
01:31:15I don't think any of us
01:31:16as normal drivers
01:31:17can understand
01:31:18what it is like
01:31:19a Schumacher
01:31:20gets the car sliding
01:31:21through there.
01:31:22It is like on ice.
01:31:24Ferrari trying
01:31:25for their third sweep
01:31:27in Canada.
01:31:28Williams enjoys
01:31:29three 1-2 finishes.
01:31:32McLaren and Ferrari
01:31:33two apiece.
01:31:35And if Schumacher
01:31:36was to win this race
01:31:37he would break
01:31:38this awful thing
01:31:39that he's been hanging
01:31:40around the driver's necks
01:31:41of 12 races
01:31:42or 13 races
01:31:43without the pole man
01:31:44going to victory.
01:31:46He could have done it
01:31:47in Monaco,
01:31:48but as you know
01:31:49the exhaust cracked
01:31:50and burnt the suspension
01:31:51which meant it bent
01:31:52and he fell out
01:31:53of the race.
01:31:55Look at this,
01:31:56Verstappen having a real
01:31:57look on the inside of
01:31:58Vert, couldn't do it.
01:31:59Doing a super bit
01:32:00of driving there.
01:32:01Now this is where
01:32:02some of the cars
01:32:03that might have had
01:32:04a bit more downforce
01:32:05because of the tyre
01:32:06problems at the beginning
01:32:07of the race
01:32:08trying to generate heat,
01:32:09of course the extra
01:32:10downforce will help
01:32:11these cars in the wet.
01:32:16So we're at 54 laps,
01:32:1715 to go here
01:32:18in the Grand Prix
01:32:19of Canada.
01:32:21Michael Schumacher
01:32:22with a 24 second lead.
01:32:26You see one of the
01:32:27Williams off.
01:32:29Jensen Button.
01:32:32Button running
01:32:33in 14th position.
01:32:35The Schumacher
01:32:36from Barrichello,
01:32:37Fisichella,
01:32:38and Mika Hakkinen.
01:32:4513 laps to go
01:32:46with Michael Schumacher
01:32:47in front of the
01:32:48Canadian Grand Prix.
01:32:49Tonight,
01:32:50Hector Camacho Jr.
01:32:51leads the car
01:32:52to a Father's Day
01:32:53special Sunday night
01:32:54in Monaco.
01:32:56Father's Day special
01:32:57Sunday night.
01:32:58Fights.
01:32:59Sons and daughters
01:33:00of boxing legends
01:33:01on a special card
01:33:02that's tonight
01:33:03on Fox Sports at 8pm
01:33:04your local time.
01:33:07I'll show you what
01:33:08happened a minute ago
01:33:09to Jacques Villeneuve.
01:33:11Coming into the right
01:33:12and left out the back
01:33:13and look at that
01:33:14piece of car control
01:33:15as he gets it back.
01:33:16Very, very lucky.
01:33:17I've never seen
01:33:18anybody get quite so sideways
01:33:19both ways
01:33:20to get it back on the road.
01:33:21But the conditions
01:33:22are atrocious
01:33:23as we see Eddie Irvine
01:33:24sliding around
01:33:25trying to get some traction.
01:33:26They've got 800 horsepower
01:33:27they weigh 1300 pounds.
01:33:28Can you imagine
01:33:29trying to keep that lot
01:33:30under control?
01:33:31He almost didn't there.
01:33:32Look at it
01:33:33side by side
01:33:34Verstappen having a look at
01:33:35Verts.
01:33:36Is he going to do it
01:33:37this time?
01:33:38Yes, he does go by.
01:33:39Verts having an
01:33:40outstanding drive
01:33:41this afternoon.
01:33:42My goodness
01:33:43did he need it
01:33:44because the skids
01:33:45are under him
01:33:46at Bennison
01:33:47if he doesn't.
01:33:48And how about
01:33:49Verstappen up in the points.
01:33:50That's 6th place right there.
01:33:51Michael Schumacher
01:33:52dropped 2 seconds
01:33:53on that lap
01:33:54from his quickest lap
01:33:55of the rain
01:33:56by anybody.
01:33:57Dropped back 2 seconds
01:33:58so he probably
01:33:59had a moment himself
01:34:00somewhere.
01:34:01Interesting to note
01:34:02though that in fact
01:34:03the Jensen button
01:34:04has been lapping
01:34:05within a second
01:34:06of the leading group
01:34:07for the last
01:34:0810 minutes or so
01:34:09doing some wonderful
01:34:10times in those
01:34:11wet conditions.
01:34:12Let's have a look
01:34:13at the constructors
01:34:14team by team
01:34:15here at 12 laps
01:34:16to go.
01:34:17Tuffe from McLaren
01:34:18Hocken and Forth
01:34:19and Coulthard
01:34:20after that penalty
01:34:21stop is ninth.
01:34:23Ferrari of course
01:34:24won two.
01:34:25Schumacher has
01:34:26led most of this race
01:34:27surrendering to
01:34:28Barrichello when he
01:34:29made his pit stop.
01:34:30Frentzen is out
01:34:31of the race.
01:34:32Jarno Trulli in fifth.
01:34:33Eddie Irvine
01:34:34had to start
01:34:35from the pit lane
01:34:36with problems.
01:34:37Johnny Herbert
01:34:38has retired for Jaguar.
01:34:39Both of the Williams
01:34:40still running.
01:34:41Ralph Schumacher
01:34:42up in eighth.
01:34:43And a great day
01:34:44for Bennetton
01:34:45with Pizzichelli
01:34:46in third
01:34:47and Verts now
01:34:48in seventh.
01:34:49Frost,
01:34:50their misfortunes
01:34:51for both cars
01:34:52out.
01:34:5312th.
01:34:54The only
01:34:55solver left
01:34:56running.
01:34:57They're stopping
01:34:58up in the points
01:34:59for Arrows.
01:35:00Menardi
01:35:01with Genet
01:35:02and Manzacani
01:35:03both still running.
01:35:04And B.A.R.
01:35:05with Jacques Villeneuve
01:35:06has started the day
01:35:07third.
01:35:08Now tenth
01:35:09and Zonta
01:35:10eleventh.
01:35:11There's Jacques.
01:35:12There's some
01:35:13real trains
01:35:14out there.
01:35:15Traffic.
01:35:16Very, very
01:35:17unfortunate.
01:35:18There we go.
01:35:19The
01:35:20Menardi
01:35:21pulls over
01:35:22to let
01:35:23Coulthard
01:35:24by.
01:35:25Coulthard and
01:35:26Villeneuve running
01:35:27ninth and tenth.
01:35:28David not actually
01:35:29impressing very much
01:35:30in the rain here
01:35:31this afternoon.
01:35:32But I think after
01:35:33such a buzz
01:35:34he had,
01:35:35ooh,
01:35:36looking down
01:35:37the inside
01:35:38goes Jacques.
01:35:39Can't make it.
01:35:40We all talked
01:35:41about Jacques
01:35:42running a low
01:35:43downforce as we
01:35:44run with Jacques.
01:35:45Whoa,
01:35:46look at him
01:35:47trying to get
01:35:48that power down.
01:35:50Brilliant job
01:35:51in the wet.
01:35:52Must be all that
01:35:53go-kart and
01:35:54snowmobile experience.
01:35:55He's really tossing
01:35:56that car around.
01:35:57To me,
01:35:58he's one of those
01:35:59drivers with probably
01:36:00the best car control
01:36:01in the world
01:36:02along with the
01:36:03Schumacher.
01:36:04You saw the car
01:36:05there just lurched
01:36:06to the right as it
01:36:07shifted.
01:36:08This is the hairpin
01:36:09where they're braking
01:36:10from probably 180
01:36:11miles in the wet.
01:36:12Look at David
01:36:13slip out wide
01:36:14and down out
01:36:15went Jacques as well.
01:36:16He went out wide
01:36:17and he thought
01:36:18he was going to
01:36:19make it.
01:36:20They are 9th and
01:36:2110th.
01:36:22Just 1.7
01:36:23seconds back of
01:36:24Ralf Schumacher.
01:36:25Well,
01:36:26Michael Schumacher
01:36:27has backed off
01:36:28a lot.
01:36:29He's been
01:36:30some,
01:36:31lapping some
01:36:322 seconds or
01:36:33a second half to
01:36:342 seconds slower
01:36:35than Barry
01:36:36Keller at this
01:36:37stage of the race.
01:36:38Of course,
01:36:39there's not many
01:36:40laps to go.
01:36:41Michael has a
01:36:4220-second barrier
01:36:43to Barry Keller
01:36:44and a further
01:36:4520 on to
01:36:46Busy Keller.
01:36:48And Rubens
01:36:49could catch him
01:36:50up by race end
01:36:51if the present
01:36:52differential between
01:36:53them continues.
01:36:54But catching him up
01:36:55is only one thing.
01:36:56Back to the
01:36:57first of the
01:36:58McLarens from
01:36:59Schumacher.
01:37:00You see 53 seconds
01:37:01and a minute 15
01:37:02back to
01:37:03Coulthard.
01:37:07Let's join
01:37:08Peter Winsor with
01:37:0910 laps to go.
01:37:10Thanks very much,
01:37:11Mike.
01:37:12I was very
01:37:13unlucky.
01:37:14Not the first
01:37:15break probably
01:37:16this one is a
01:37:17different one.
01:37:18Nothing to do
01:37:19with material.
01:37:20We had
01:37:21pressure loss
01:37:22on the rear
01:37:23system and
01:37:24don't know
01:37:25where, how
01:37:26this problem
01:37:27has caused.
01:37:28Great shame
01:37:29because you
01:37:30love these
01:37:31conditions that
01:37:32we're seeing
01:37:33now.
01:37:34Yeah,
01:37:35it wouldn't be
01:37:36too bad.
01:37:37At least I
01:37:38would have a
01:37:39chance to
01:37:40fight in
01:37:41the points
01:37:42and I
01:37:43wanted to
01:37:44be in the
01:37:45lead.
01:37:46I think it's a
01:37:47great track.
01:37:48It's a different
01:37:49track from all
01:37:50the others we
01:37:51have been so
01:37:52far.
01:37:53Especially
01:37:54because we have
01:37:55a very long
01:37:56straight.
01:37:57I think
01:37:58overtaking
01:37:59should be
01:38:00possible but
01:38:01we have as
01:38:02well a
01:38:03sophisticated
01:38:04infield with
01:38:05a lot of
01:38:06corners and
01:38:07that makes
01:38:08the compromise
01:38:09difficult
01:38:10really.
01:38:11I think
01:38:12if we have to
01:38:13run a
01:38:14lot of
01:38:15corners,
01:38:16we have to
01:38:17run a
01:38:18lot of
01:38:19corners.
01:38:20We have to
01:38:21run a
01:38:22lot of
01:38:23corners.
01:38:24We have to
01:38:25run a
01:38:26lot of
01:38:27corners.

01:38:30lot of
01:38:31corners.

01:38:33run a

01:38:37run a
01:38:38lot of
01:38:39corners.

01:38:53run a
01:38:54lot of

01:38:57run a
01:38:58lot of
01:38:59corners.

01:39:05run a
