The 1st Friday Practice session for Round 15 of the 2000 F1 season at Indianapolis.
Transcript
00:00We are live at the Indianapolis motor speedway, and you are watching history in the making.
00:07For the very first time ever, open-wheeled racing cars are going around the Indianapolis
00:13motor speedway in a clockwise direction.
00:16This is the opening minute of practice for the United States grand prix.
00:20Heinz Harreld Frenson, who back in June was the first Formula 1 driver to tour this circuit
00:26in a road car to get a feel for the track, is the first driver to take to the course
00:30in that bright yellow Jordan Mugen Honda, followed by Johnny Herbert in the Jaguar Cosworth.
00:36They wind into the infield section of the road course, the very first time that it has
00:41been used.
00:43Inside the 2.5-mile oval, they'll turn right onto Hulman Boulevard, which is normally an
00:49access road during the months of May and August for the Indian NASCAR races, and then come
00:54down into a double hairpin complex, and then they'll come out onto the oval and to the
00:59yard of Briggs.
01:00Mike Joy with former Ferrari F1 driver Derrick Bell and Peter Winsor joins us from the pit
01:04lane on a great historic day.
01:07We'll have this hour of practice for you live, another hour of practice later this afternoon,
01:12full, complete coverage of qualifying Saturday and the U.S. Grand Prix with an expanded one-hour
01:17free race on Sunday.
01:18And here they come, out onto the oval for the very first time.
01:24Historic moment, the Jordan comes in and the Jaguar, Johnny Herbert's coming around
01:27to make history and be the first guy to come around turn one on the oval in Indianapolis,
01:31the wrong way around and be in the right order.
01:34Here he goes over the start-finish line, a great moment for Johnny Herbert and for Jaguar.
01:40The speed trap is located near the end of that front straightaway, and Herbert, on his
01:44very first lap, comes through there at 321 kilometers per hour.
01:49That's exactly 200 and a bit miles an hour.
01:52Not bad for the first time.
01:53You can bet your life he was being a little bit cautious as he went around the banking
01:56and he wouldn't have come through turn 11 and 12 that fast.
02:00We're looking at Michael Schumacher now as he goes out on his first exploratory lap.
02:05I'd just like to explain, they're going to come out and do just a few laps just to check
02:09the data on their cars.
02:10They'll go in, as you can see, they're peeling into the pits now after one or two laps.
02:13All the data will be downloaded.
02:14They'll be checking the cars out because obviously we have this slight problem with the banking
02:19and they've never done this before, so there's a lot to be checked out.
02:23Indy car, NASCAR, and now Formula 1.
02:26I think any fan, not necessarily student of motor racing, can grasp just what an epic
02:32moment this really is.
02:36For most of the 100-year history of auto racing, the most famous name in motor sports, Indianapolis.
02:44The brickyard, the Indy 500, the world's largest single-day sporting spectator event.
02:53And so they came to be a part of our heritage and our folklore, the legends who lived and
02:58sometimes died in their attempts to win an Indy, Bukovic, Andretti, Foyt, Mir.
03:06The names of the drivers and their cars became as familiar as the immortal words.
03:12Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.
03:15Now it is time for Formula 1, the pinnacle of international auto racing.
03:21The finest drivers in the world in the most exotic race cars in the world.
03:26The favorites include Ferrari, McLaren, and world champion drivers Schumacher, Haakonen,
03:32and Villeneuve.
03:35Welcome into a new era in Formula 1 and American motor sports.
03:39Welcome to the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
03:44A beautiful day for racing in Indianapolis.
03:47It is cool, but the sun is shining.
03:49And what a wonderful crowd we have here for this first hour of practice.
03:52Hi, everyone.
03:53I'm Mike Joy with Eric Bell.
03:54Welcome to our live coverage of the first hour of Formula 1 practice here.
03:59Such anticipation and just such excitement in the air to hear these V10s come to life
04:03and see them at full song down this front straightaway.
04:06Absolutely, Mike.
04:07Just to walk through those gates of this hallowed circuit is something unique.
04:10But don't forget, this is all about the battle between Haakonen and Schumacher
04:14for the world championship.
04:15Only two points separates them with three races to go.
04:18Very, very important race for them.
04:20This is the 15th of 17 races in this year's world championship,
04:24but it is the first time that Formula 1 has been raced on American soil in nine years
04:29and the first time in 20 years that it's been contested on a permanent circuit.
04:34You see Schumacher working his way around the course.
04:38And you'll see those segment times on the lower part of the screen.
04:41The time on the left is Schumacher's best so far.
04:43The running time is on the right.
04:45Schumacher's already got the quickest time so far,
04:48three-tenths under his own time on only his second lap.
04:51Typical Michael Schumacher.
04:53He seems to be able to go out, grasp the circuit straightaway,
04:56and there he is, 1 minute 18.
04:59Now working through the second segment on board.
05:03What a shot that is.
05:04Look at that shot right down on the nose.
05:07We thank our friends at Formula 1 for this shot.
05:09We're going to have plenty more of this for you this weekend with Fox Sportsnet,
05:12that is for sure, riding on the car.
05:15Through the double hairpin complex and up to complete the second sector
05:18right there at the timing mark, entering turn 10.
05:20Those are the turn 2 sweeps in the grandstands.
05:23And this is really the most vital part of the track now
05:26as they work their way out.
05:27He's coming up to turn 1 on the Indy circuit.
05:30There he goes.
05:31His sweeps are here at 190 miles an hour as he goes through right out to the wall.
05:35Now each driver drives his primary car.
05:38No spare cars are permitted.
05:40If they damage the car, they have to fix it or sit out the rest of the day
05:43because this is a new circuit.
05:45The teams have been allotted two extra sets of tires
05:47because extra practice laps are anticipated to learn the course.
05:51They can run as many laps as they want at road speed 60 kilometers per hour.
05:55You've got to hold it in fairly tight here
06:06because you've got to lead out onto the Holman straight.
06:08Holman Boulevard.
06:09Here he goes down a gear onto this straight.
06:11He'll be probably getting it for 180 miles an hour
06:13as he works his way down here.
06:16There's Michael now in the back of your shot.
06:18Braking now through the little very tight complex
06:22which seems a little bit unnecessary
06:24but is part of Formula 1 these days.
06:25A very tight first and second gear section.
06:29It's quite a double hairpin.
06:30It's as if you unfolded a paperclip.
06:32It's very tight there.
06:33And this is the corner.
06:34This is the corner, in my opinion,
06:35that makes the difference between the men and the boys.
06:37Coming out onto the banking.
06:38He's coming out now to turn 12.
06:41Flat all the way.
06:45He's got a good draft off Frentzen who ducks down low.
06:49Schumacher goes past.
06:50Who said Schumacher's never been ran in over before?
06:53That was a fairly good bit of overtaking.
06:54I'd have thought for anybody.
06:57116.6.
06:58Here we are breaking down into the first turn.
07:02So the first hour of practice for the U.S. Grand Prix
07:04is underway.
07:05You're watching it live on Fox Sportsnet
07:07and we'll be back with much more after this.
07:22Welcome back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
07:40where McLaren Mercedes driver David Coulthard
07:42has had car trouble.
07:43He is parked on the warm-up lane toward the entrance,
07:46which for Formula 1 is the entrance to the pit lane
07:48rather than the exit,
07:50as it is during the month of May.
07:52And remember, as we said,
07:53your primary car is the only car in which you can practice,
07:57so he is using a little less than one horsepower
08:00to get that back to pit lane.
08:02It's quite a long way to, Mike.
08:03It doesn't look any distance at all here
08:05because it's a pit entry,
08:06but it's a long way for David.
08:12On board with one of the VARs
08:13that seems to be going rather slowly,
08:14but it could well be just a sort of a set-up lap
08:17getting himself up together.
08:19Jack Villeneuve in the 1 minute 30,
08:21that's a long way behind Michael Schumacher,
08:23but remember, it's really all reconnaissance work at the moment,
08:26trying to get the best set-up with the car,
08:28and they don't have much time.
08:29They have one hour.
08:30They can do as many laps as they like,
08:32and they have really as many tires as they like.
08:34Drivers yesterday said within about 10 laps,
08:36they would have learned the circuit
08:38and then begin looking for little places
08:41where they could pick up speed
08:42and working on the car set-up.
08:44But most of the cars now have completed
08:45between three and five laps of the circuit.
08:48Let's get out of the pit lane
08:49and join former Ferrari and Williams team manager Peter Windsor.
08:52Thank you very much indeed, Mike.
08:54It's been a brilliant last five minutes.
08:56I have to say, probably the most exciting five minutes of my life,
08:59seeing these cars come out at Indy,
09:01three abreast in the pit lane.
09:02I don't remember a pit lane this wide.
09:04It was very funny.
09:05All the Formula 1 people were out on the pit apron here
09:08waiting to hear the sound of a V10 engine on full song
09:11down that main straight,
09:13and everybody had a big smile on their face.
09:15It is a fantastic moment for Formula 1 here in the pit lane.
09:17And now there's an essence of urgency
09:19because weather is not predicted that accurately, of course,
09:22but at the moment most teams are expecting some rain on Sunday,
09:25certainly some rain tomorrow.
09:27The urgency to get in as many laps as possible in the dry right now.
09:30They've got two compounds of Bridgestone to choose from.
09:33They have to do that by midday Saturday just before qualifying.
09:36And of course, yes, they're learning the circuit too.
09:38David Coulthard has made it back to the McLaren garage.
09:41That's one of the changes for Formula 1 here at Indy.
09:45The Formula 1 requirement, the garages open directly onto the pit lane,
09:49so the traditional gasoline alley is used for the support race competitors
09:54and for team meetings and hospitality.
09:56The garages are right here along the front straightaway,
09:59opening up to the pit lane.
10:01Jack Villeneuve, who was ninth fastest on his last lap
10:06among the drivers who've taken the track thus far,
10:08and everyone seems to have completed at least a couple of laps.
10:11He's now up to fifth.
10:13Mika Hakkinen actually got within half a second of Michael Schumacher on his last lap.
10:17Remember, Michael came out at the beginning
10:19and got settled in very, very quickly, as he always does,
10:22these two being the main protagonists for the World Championship this year.
10:25Well, Derek, let's have a look at the changes they've made
10:27to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to accommodate Formula 1.
10:31Half of the track is oval, half of the track is infield road course.
10:37Well, there you see this very interesting 2.6-mile track,
10:41and you can see it goes clockwise,
10:43and you can see as they come down the pit straight,
10:45as they come down the pit straight,
10:47a very lot of serious braking goes on right here from 215 miles an hour,
10:51then down to second gear, they work their way through,
10:54and then you've got the Holman Straight coming up here,
10:56a lot of serious braking going on here,
10:58and to my mind, the most important part of the track is this corner right here,
11:02the most important part of the track,
11:04where they have to then go flat all the way up onto the banking
11:08and around past the pits, vital part of the circuit, mate.
11:11You'll hear us talking about segment times.
11:13Every Formula 1 course is divided into three timing segments,
11:16from start-finish, segment 1 ends here, segment 2 here,
11:19and that final segment sweeps around the oval.
11:22And that's where in qualifying you can sort of work out
11:24just where the guys are quicker, and this really helps them a lot.
11:29A look at the entry into the infield road course.
11:32This is at the northwest end of the speedway,
11:34near inside of turn 4 of the oval.
11:39Jarno Trulli for Jordan.
11:48It's Mika Hakkinen right behind him.
11:50Mika has been pushing some good times already out there.
11:55Of course, he's inclined to get held up by people,
11:57but sometimes these drivers take a little longer to learn the track.
12:00The intriguing thing about this weekend is just how they're going to set their cars up.
12:04Are we going to have an extremely low downforce car,
12:07so we get the speed on the straight for the 1.2 miles,
12:10or is it going to be a medium downforce circuit,
12:12so we can get the handling through this infield section you can see now,
12:15and lose a bit on the straight?
12:17The perfect thing is to have a medium-high downforce set-up car
12:20as you go around the infield,
12:22and then get a tow or a slipstream off another car,
12:24going down the straight, pull out, and out-brake in for turn 1.
12:27That would be the perfect thing to do in qualifying, but that is tomorrow.
12:31What about engine reliability, Derek?
12:33McLaren told us yesterday that they are going to be full-throttle
12:36for some 22 seconds from the exit of the infield
12:39to the braking zone at the end of the front straightaway.
12:41That's a long time to run at 17,000 rpm.
12:44Well, that is the longest time they have to at any circuit of the year.
12:47Look at that young Jenson Button, right up there,
12:50right next to Schumacher and Hacken,
12:52and that young man is outrageously quick, one has to say.
12:55We'll talk about why Jenson Button is up at the front of the pack in just a bit.
12:59We'll be back with more,
13:01and have a look at the schedule on Fox Sportsnet for the weekend.
13:07Two hours of Friday practice,
13:10our Saturday qualifying show,
13:12and Sunday a one-hour free race and the U.S. Grand Prix.
13:17You're watching Formula One live on Fox Sportsnet.
13:28What a wonderful sound as we welcome you back live
13:31to Indianapolis Motor Speedway
13:33the opening hour of practice for the United States Grand Prix.
13:49Giancarlo Fisichello,
13:51you just saw him pass the wounded car of Ralf Schumacher
13:54limping back to the pits, and here is Michael Schumacher.
13:57He looked like he was on a bit of a charge there.
13:59He was really on it going through that corner,
14:01I guess he's just trying to find out the limits of the car
14:04and get the data back so they can work on it for this afternoon's session.
14:08Schumacher's just run the fastest first sector of the track yet,
14:11you see, by a hundredth of a second.
14:14And now it's sector two. Let's go to the pit lane.
14:17And Peter, what are the teams most concerned
14:20and trying to learn in this first session?
14:22Well, of course, Mike, the big issue here is that bank corner.
14:25There's not much preparation the teams have been able to do for that.
14:28I was talking to a McLaren engineer just before practice started,
14:32and he said, yeah, the software for their simulation of that bank corner
14:35arrived at the McLaren factory just as they were all getting on the plane
14:38to come here to Indianapolis.
14:40For the engine designers, it's a major cause of concern.
14:42Oil surged through that corner,
14:44so a lot of the major engine manufacturers have been running engines on the dyno
14:47with the engine canted over at exactly 9 degrees 12 minutes
14:51to try to simulate that corner.
14:53We have one problem driver in the pit lane at the moment,
14:55that's David Coulthard.
14:57He's got a battery on that car at the moment,
14:58so it doesn't look as if it's too serious.
15:00Hopefully David will be out with a decent battery in that car running quickly.
15:03And Ralph Schumacher has limped back to the pit lane,
15:06and his Williams BMW pushed to the garage,
15:08and here's one of the Benettons in the fence,
15:10and that's Fisichella.
15:12Fisichella in the fence just after Michael Schumacher,
15:14just on the quickest time by half a second.
15:16Fisichella, of course, we just rode with him,
15:18so we saw him trying very, very hard.
15:20Remember that the inside track, the inside circuit,
15:23the new circuit is very, very slippery indeed
15:26because it's a new surface, and nobody's run on it.
15:29Let's show you on board.
15:31What happened to Fisichella? As he climbs out, he is okay.
15:38Now this is the corner I've been talking about.
15:40It's coming in, and this is the most vital corner on the track
15:42because it's the one that leads on to the banking.
15:44He turns in, and on that green surface,
15:46he just does not have any grip at all,
15:48and he goes straight in the bank.
15:50And that is the corner that I've said ever since I came here two years ago,
15:53the one corner these guys have got to get absolutely spot on
15:56because it feeds them out onto the oval.
15:59The soft wall is doing their job. Fisichella has climbed out.
16:01He is okay.
16:03And there's a look at Giancarlo.
16:06Back to Peter.
16:07Yeah, well, big news from Giancarlo is last night,
16:10he was talking about the fact that Bridgestone are recommending
16:13that the teams are running higher tire pressures
16:15on the left-hand side to the right,
16:17also to help the cars through this banked corner
16:19leading on to the main straight.
16:21He's got about 23 pounds on the left, 19 on the right.
16:23That's a lot higher than Formula 1 tires are normally pumped up to.
16:27That's one of the... Bridgestone are working very hard
16:29to make sure there are no tire problems,
16:31and increasing the tire pressures is one way of doing that.
16:34But Giancarlo said he didn't know how the car was going to handle
16:37with higher tire pressures on the left, lower on the right,
16:39and we've seen how it's handling.
16:41The problem for him now is they have to get that car back
16:43and get it repaired for him this afternoon.
16:45He cannot use the spare that they do have.
16:47So there's going to be a lot of work going on there.
16:49They're fortunate that India built this incredibly important
16:52backup there for safety, and of course the car just went into it
16:56and it damaged the car rather than ruined it.
16:59A lot of left front damage there.
17:00Let's have a look and show you just what kind of dollar amounts
17:03are involved in the damage and in putting a car here
17:07on the track at Indianapolis.
17:09Let's start with a $300,000 engine package
17:12and a $115,000 chassis.
17:15And then we have the pedal suspension extinguisher's front wing plank,
17:18and look at the cost of that lot.
17:20$40,000 worth of brakes and a $25,000 steering wheel
17:24with electronic controls.
17:26But what do you expect, Mike?
17:27And look at this, the gearbox, $105,000,
17:29then the gear ratios to make it work a further 16.
17:32That makes up...
17:33Ka-ching, $800,000 to put one of these Formula 1
17:39computer-engineered missiles on the speedway.
17:45Well, a long trip back for Giancarlo Fisichella.
17:47He's going to have to explain to the guys,
17:48I'm sorry, I shouldn't be going quite so crazy so soon.
17:52And they're going to have to work on, like, crazy
17:54to get that car finished for the next session.
17:56Sean Alesi on board the Boss,
17:58the most experienced driver in Formula 1.
18:00He and Pedro Diniz were seen out having a dinner...
18:04Another car in the sand, Mike.
18:06One of the Menardis having a little drive around off-road.
18:09But it worked there for him.
18:11He was very lucky he didn't get stuck in that.
18:13Look, that's Zuccani.
18:18So we're about 20 minutes into this first hour of practice
18:20for the United States Grand Prix.
18:23And we're going to have a look at some of the teams
18:26and give you a little more inside detail
18:28as we go along through this one hour of practice.
18:33McLaren Mercedes.
18:35Led by Mika Hakkinen,
18:36this Finn is gunning to be the first driver since 1957
18:40to win three driver championships in a row.
18:43His teammate is David Koltar.
18:45With nine career wins,
18:46the Scotsman is always a threat to the championship.
18:53Prost Peugeot.
18:56Veteran Frenchman Jean Alesi is in his 12th season driving F1
19:00and still wants more and expects nothing less.
19:05This quiet and underrated rookie from Germany,
19:07Nick Heidfeld, rounds out the team from France.
19:10VAR Honda.
19:121997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve
19:14is the commander of this team.
19:16Aggressive and intense are the only two words
19:19that best describe this Canadian.
19:24Ricardo Zonta from Brazil
19:25is driving in his second season with the team.
19:28And his sixth place finish two weeks ago in Italy
19:30was his best.
19:35Welcome back live to Formula 1 at Indy
19:37where Ralph Schumacher is losing valuable setting up time.
19:39He has a problem with his Williams BMW
19:41with the left front suspension.
19:43Now, he said it comes if the car wheel was loose.
19:46Of course, it probably wasn't.
19:48They're changing the brakes at the moment.
19:50I have to say, an atmosphere of calm efficiency at Williams.
19:52Fairly typical of the team.
19:53Chris Hyatt there, you can see, is back to the camera
19:55working very diligently on the car.
19:57Other mechanics not getting involved
19:58unless they can do something specifically.
20:00They're just having a look at the other front suspension there.
20:03Michael Schumacher back in
20:04after setting the fastest lap of the morning.
20:06One minute, 15.28 seconds.
20:09That is a full second faster
20:10than anyone else has been around this circuit.
20:12And we are very interested in top speeds around the oval.
20:15Just for stopping in the Arrows,
20:18which everyone feels is a very significantly
20:21superior aerodynamic car.
20:23348 kilometers per hour,
20:25that's 212.5 miles per hour
20:28early on in this hour.
20:31And Arrows has run a very good low downforce package
20:33much of the season.
20:34Mika Hakan and David Coulthard,
20:36the two McLaren drivers,
20:37are both out of their cars
20:39as the mechanics make changes.
20:42And make repairs to Coulthard's
20:44and should be back out.
20:45That looks like Frentzen had a spin there,
20:47on his own there.
20:49But poor David Coulthard,
20:51it never seems to rain.
20:52It pours on that poor guy.
20:53He gets out there,
20:54hardly completes a lap
20:55and the car has to be pushed in
20:56as we saw earlier.
20:57And this is really valuable time for him.
20:59Obviously, he can take data from Mika's car
21:02where necessary.
21:03And they possibly sent the two cars out
21:05for this session with different setups
21:07so they could bring the data back in,
21:09diagnose it,
21:10and then set up the car for this afternoon.
21:12And as he told us yesterday, Derek,
21:13he said, for four or five races,
21:14I couldn't do anything wrong.
21:15And now,
21:16nothing I do turns out right.
21:18He's got to get that monkey off his back.
21:20That's right.
21:21But he keeps blaming himself,
21:22this David.
21:23And I can't help but thinking,
21:24it isn't his fault
21:25the things that have gone wrong.
21:26He said,
21:27yeah, but, you know,
21:28I should qualify higher.
21:29But, you know,
21:30there's a lot of competition out there
21:31and you don't need bad luck in a race.
21:33The fastest thus far,
21:34Michael Schumacher's Ferrari.
21:36Mika Hakan and McLaren.
21:38Barrichello's Ferrari.
21:39Jack Villeneuve in the BAR.
21:41And Jensen Button, the rookie,
21:43in the Williams BMW.
21:44And one reason, I think, Derek, for that
21:46is video games.
21:48Well, video games,
21:49that does certainly help, Mike.
21:50But Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakan
21:52said, to heck with video games.
21:53They don't help us at all
21:54because you don't have the feel.
21:56And I must admit,
21:57there is no feel there,
21:58but it does give you an idea
21:59as to where the circuit goes.
22:01But Jensen grew up
22:02as part of that video game generation.
22:04And all of the teams have
22:05computer simulations of the course.
22:06And he's been able to run laps
22:09any time he wanted on his computer
22:11to try to get acclimated to this race course.
22:13And so I'm really not at all surprised
22:15that he is in the top five
22:16in the early going here.
22:17And the other point there, too,
22:18I must forget,
22:19is that they came here
22:20on a level playing field.
22:21Nobody had been here,
22:22apart from Frentzen
22:23and that testing,
22:24a little bit of testing he did.
22:26So, therefore, it's very, very important
22:28for Jensen to go out there
22:29and prove that he has that
22:30natural ability.
22:32Because let's face it,
22:33we've got Juan Pablo Montoya
22:34going to Williams next year
22:35and he's going to have
22:36a lot of pressure on his back.
22:38Replacing the button
22:40who's going to the Benetton team.
22:45We've got Mika Salo
22:46right up there in fifth place.
22:47That was a very good time for him
22:48in the Sauber.
22:52And we can see on the data feed
22:54the effects of changing wing angles.
22:56Barrichello's top speed
22:57in the first sector
22:59significantly up.
23:00And now Barrichello
23:01has turned the second fastest lap
23:03of this practice session.
23:04He's only 6 tenths off
23:05Michael Schumacher
23:06and he's 6 tenths ahead
23:08of the first of the McLarens,
23:09that being HÃ¥konen.
23:12Maybe it's the data they gained here
23:13when it's Alberto Ascari
23:14drove in 1952
23:15and Ferrari have kept that data
23:17together from the oval.
23:24Villeneuve on the course
23:25for the 95 Indy 500 winner.
23:29The only driver in the field
23:30who has raced at Indianapolis.
23:32Though, as we've said,
23:33that experience won't be
23:34of much benefit
23:36since we're going
23:37the opposite way around
23:38and using the infield road course.
23:41The Jacks seem very,
23:42very happy this weekend,
23:43very confident.
23:44I think he's worked so hard
23:45on trying to make this car work.
23:46Let's just ride with Villeneuve.
23:55Just hark at those revs.
23:5717,500 of Honda revs
23:59as they come to us.
24:00Steaming down the straight.
24:04Let's have another look
24:05at three of the teams
24:06who'll be competing here
24:07in the United States Grand Prix
24:09this weekend.
24:13Williams BMW.
24:15Germany's Ralf Schumacher
24:17continues his climb
24:18to be the best
24:19of the next generation.
24:20His next goal is to place higher
24:22than his brother Michael.
24:23Rookie sensation Jensen Button
24:25from Great Britain
24:26continues to thrill and surprise
24:28the F1 world.
24:30A win not far away.
24:33Menardi Ford.
24:34Spain's hero Marc Genet
24:36is in his second season
24:37and part of a new
24:38Spanish armada of drivers.
24:45Gaston Mazzacani,
24:46the rookie from Argentina,
24:47has surprised many
24:48with his flair and speed.
24:51Sauber Petronas.
24:52In his sixth season,
24:53the polished Brazilian
24:54Pedro Diniz
24:55continues to drive hard
24:57in his search for his
24:58first Formula 1 win.
25:01Mika Salo is the other
25:03driver from Finland.
25:04Close to a victory last year
25:06as Ferrari's super sub,
25:07Salo proved he can win
25:09with the best of them.
25:13And Mika Salo right now
25:15is fifth on the speed chart
25:17behind Michael Schumacher,
25:18Rubens Barrichello,
25:19Mika Hakkinen,
25:20and Jack Villeneuve.
25:21Salo's Sauber stands fifth.
25:27Half an hour through
25:28the first hour of practice
25:29we'll be back at 2 p.m.
25:31with hour number two
25:32on Saturday.
25:33An hour and a half
25:34of qualifying coverage
25:35at 2 p.m. Eastern
25:36and then Sunday
25:37at 1 p.m. Eastern,
25:38a one-hour pre-race
25:39and the United States Grand Prix.
25:41Presently, Michael Schumacher
25:42is fastest.
25:43His Ferrari teammate,
25:44Rubens Barrichello,
25:45is second.
25:46McLaren's Mika Hakkinen
25:48is third.
25:49Jack Villeneuve
25:50and Mika Salo,
25:51both the VAR cars,
25:52moving up on the speed charts
25:54here just in the last
25:56couple of laps.
25:58And let's meet
25:59one of the owners
26:00of one of these 11
26:01competing Formula 1 teams
26:02with Peter Windsor.
26:03Thank you very much, Mike.
26:04Yes, I'm with Eddie Jordan,
26:05owner of the Jordan Honda team.
26:07First question, Eddie,
26:08what do the drivers
26:09think of the circuit?
26:10Oh, I think they love it.
26:11You know, it's a
26:12different atmosphere.
26:13It's also nice coming
26:14to a new place.
26:15It's always that little bit
26:16of buzz, excitement.
26:17Back in the United States
26:18for such a long time now,
26:19ten years,
26:20everybody, including myself,
26:21we're overjoyed.
26:22It's fabulous.
26:23And how's that bank turn
26:24one so far?
26:25Well, we're looking
26:26right at it.
26:27And, of course,
26:28the drivers,
26:29unless they've been
26:30to Indy before,
26:31they haven't experienced
26:32anything like this.
26:33I've been here
26:34almost ten years ago
26:35with Stefan Johansson
26:36when we were on
26:37the front row,
26:38so I'm not really...
26:39I've seen it all before,
26:40but it's always
26:41something special
26:42and very exciting.
26:43Eddie Jordan,
26:44very much an Indy fan,
26:45and let's hope
26:46you have a great weekend.
26:47Thank you very much.
26:48Back to you, Mike.
26:49We have a look
26:50at the times,
26:51and the times there
26:52indicated in the lower
26:53part of your screen
26:54are the differential
26:55times,
26:56and that's
26:57one minute,
26:5815.28 seconds,
26:59which is the quickest
27:00thus far.
27:01Yes, the Jag's
27:02quite well down there,
27:03Mike, in 17th and 18th
27:04place.
27:05They're probably inside
27:06sorting out data,
27:07and we'll see a lot more
27:08from them later,
27:09but remember,
27:10this is really,
27:11it's really exploratory
27:12hour to find out
27:13just how to set the car
27:14up for later on today
27:15and, of course,
27:16for qualifying tomorrow.
27:17Quite a number of
27:18firsts this weekend,
27:19Derek.
27:20First time they're
27:21racing on this course
27:22in a clockwise direction,
27:23as we've discussed.
27:24This is the first
27:25oval track race
27:26in the history
27:27of the Indianapolis
27:28Motor Speedway,
27:29which dates to 1909.
27:30We believe it's
27:31the first race
27:32without an American
27:33driver in the field,
27:34and if there's rain
27:35on Sunday,
27:36this race will be
27:37contested,
27:38and that would be
27:39the first time
27:40that they've run here
27:41in the rain.
27:42I think that
27:43race without Americans
27:44is very important,
27:45and I think we
27:46have to encourage,
27:47I've been trying to do
27:48this myself with other
27:49people,
27:50to get young Americans
27:51interested in doing
27:52Formula One,
27:53and I think that
27:54this is a great
