00:00She said, get behind the buses, there's a man in there shooting with a gun.
00:04I must have looked wild enough that they thought something was, yeah, not going well.
00:10If you can imagine, you're sitting in your favourite cafe on a Sunday morning,
00:15having a cup of coffee with a couple of mates,
00:17and all of a sudden a guy bursts in with an AK-47 and starts shooting people,
00:21right in front of you.
00:22GUNSHOT
00:25That's a shotgun. That's a shotgun.
00:27Is that man running there? Yeah.
00:29I ended up with a whole lot of shrapnel wounds in the backside,
00:34and it felt like somebody with a heavy wire brush just giving me the greatest flogging.
00:40That's how it felt.
00:42What I remember is looking at my dad's feet as he's running,
00:47so I could try to make the same, like, foot pattern as him,
00:52so I wouldn't trip over my own feet.
00:54I ran and hid behind a bus because that seemed big enough.
00:58I couldn't tell you how fast we ran, but I'm tipping I would have walked on water.
01:01It was pretty quick.
01:02I remember to take my shoes off because you always see these
01:05stupid films where women are running in shoes, and it just never made any sense to me.
01:11We're laying on the floor, and I was watching his feet move around.
01:15He actually stepped over us when he chased the girls into the souvenir shop
01:19and shot them in the air and then came back out and stepped over us again.
01:22We ended up hiding under the jetty,
01:25and I remember looking at my dad's hand,
01:27and all the hairs on his hand were on end because he was so, you know, frightened.
01:33This incredible calm came over me, a peacefulness that I've never experienced before or since,
01:41and I thought I was going to die, and I was at peace with that.
01:47There was people kind of around us that didn't quite know what was happening,
01:51so he's like, you know, shut up, like, you know, keep it down.
01:56I remember him leaving, and I looked up, and the first thing I saw was the two
02:03elderly people at the table next to us, and he'd shot both of them.
02:07And because it was so cold, there was steam coming out of their wounds.
02:11The image still sticks. It was horrific.
