00:00Okay lads, six round contest, keep it clean at all times, keep yourselves protected at all times, touch gloves, here we go, good luck lads.
00:14Boom, boom, Billy Adams at super featherweight.
00:18Into his fourth professional contest and already up to six round level, he has not put a foot wrong so far.
00:25The former ABA champion in here tonight at the York Hall against Marvin Solano.
00:30More than a survivor, the Nicaraguan.
00:35Solano particularly good, I thought, in his showing in Birmingham in July against Shabaz Massoud.
00:42And his job here tonight is to give Adams a few problems to solve.
00:45I think he's well equipped to do that, Richie, what do you say?
00:48Solano, yeah, he's awkward, isn't he? And I watched the fight against Massoud.
00:52Massoud won more or less every round, but yeah, occasionally Solano made things awkward.
00:57And he comes back and if you hold your feet with him and trade, then he's brought into the contest most certainly.
01:04And I think he's got a fair bit of power about him as well.
01:07So yeah, he's awkward and he's tough.
01:10You know, he's only been stopped, what is it, three or four times.
01:13So he's a tough guy indeed, but that's a perfect shot there from Adams.
01:17He's very well schooled, lovely jab, then he sets up things with.
01:21Yeah, I like the way he boxes, young Adams, his quality.
01:26Won the ABA title at the age of only 18.
01:31And then Massoud after that decided to turn professional.
01:34There's a great history of boxing in the family and he catches a very clean left hand early there did Solano.
01:39I thought he was going to sit down on that, did you?
01:41Yeah, that was a cracking shot, wasn't it?
01:43If I remember against Massoud, Solano went down in the first round also.
01:47He did.
01:48But if you let him recover, then he tends to get a little bit better and he starts believing in himself a little bit.
01:55So it's a good start from Adams.
01:57A couple of real good shots that have landed.
02:00Everything we've seen from Adams so far is done with purpose, intelligence and quickly.
02:08This is only his 13th professional round.
02:10We're not getting carried away, but he has won all the preceding 12 in his three fights before tonight.
02:17In these sort of contests, Paul, against these rugged, unorthodox type of opponents,
02:22especially early on in the contest, keep the punches nice and straight.
02:26Don't take many risks with these type of guys because they throw shots from all angles and they're a little bit wild.
02:32That's what Solano's like.
02:34So when he's up close, he's more dangerous, you see.
02:36So keep the punches nice and straight and just try to outbox him and frustrate him.
02:41And as if he comes forward, then he'll walk on to more punishment.
02:44But let him in close and hold your feet against him.
02:46It really brings him into it.
02:52Adams seems to be aware of all of that, Richie, making the running here in the early stages.
02:58Solano, not very long ago, gave Tom Welland plenty to think about over six rounds.
03:04I'm sure Adams and his camp have had a little look at that.
03:08Left hook was decent.
03:10Solano didn't fade under the pressure late on.
03:14And Adams has started to test the resolve tonight of Solano in the early stages.
03:28Vitality rewards you for getting active with up to two months cash back on your premiums.
03:35Move forward with Vitality.
03:38Research, refine, repeat.
03:41All to let you shine the way you are.
03:43Colgate Max White Ultimate.
03:45Unlike regular toothpaste, its unique formula deeply whitens for ten times whiter teeth.
03:50So however you smile, you feel perfect.
03:53Colgate Max White Ultimate.
03:55Deeply whitens for ten times whiter teeth.
04:26So Billy Adams in the red with the white flashing.
04:33Marvin Solano in the black and green, I think it is, Richie.
04:39See, there's a nice job there from Adams.
04:41You see what Solano's decided to do now.
04:43He's just sitting back, look, so he's making, he's trying to make Billy Adams just overstretch a little bit
04:48and then he'll try and come back with it with a right-hand counter.
04:50That's why you see the movement and he's staying on that back foot.
04:53So you can see what he's trying to do, Solano.
04:56That's why Adams can't afford for a sloppy jab.
05:00Move the feet into range and just score with that punch.
05:03That lead hand there, it is there, look, without coming over the front foot and making mistakes.
05:07He can't afford to miss the target here in case Solano then comes back with a wild sort of counter.
05:14And that's what he wants to do here, Solano.
05:16There he goes, there he was, there he is.
05:18See what I'm doing? I missed the target.
05:23An awful lot of experience, Solano.
05:31This is pro fight number 43.
05:33Very respectable record overall.
05:36There were a lot of wins before he decided to try to earn a living regularly in Europe,
05:41which he most certainly has been doing over the last sort of three years or so.
05:47And he has been in with a lot of very capable prospects.
05:53129 winning rounds, just nine defeats in recent opponents.
06:03So a little bit of a change of tactics now.
06:05Solano starting to go forward.
06:07But Paul, by doing that, he's making mistakes.
06:09So it's work to see what Adams has done.
06:11It's frustrated him.
06:12Now he's making him come forward.
06:14And now he's starting to make mistakes himself, Solano.
06:17Feet are crossing.
06:19And it's all because Adams is just staying patient, waiting,
06:23working behind his lead hand, not over-committing.
06:26It's a good disciplined display up to now from Adams.
06:45There's a nice composure about Adams, isn't there, Richie?
06:49Given that he's only pro fight number four, we should not overlook that.
06:52And, you know, he's in front of his people here tonight,
06:54from Upminster just down the district line.
06:56Here at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.
06:58That comes with a little bit of expectation, a burden,
07:01that he's got to produce a performance.
07:03But he seems to be taking all that in his stride.
07:06Boxing very well, very sensible indeed.
07:09He's got a cool little shot there.
07:10But you look at his guard, generally he's very good.
07:13He's waiting for the shots to come back at him.
07:15He's blocking most of them.
07:16The quality of the punch from Solano isn't that good.
07:19It's a bit wild and reckless.
07:21And there, look at that perfect jab.
07:23This is lovely boxing in and out with the feet.
07:25That's the way you do it.
07:43All inclusive to over 100 destinations.
07:59Adventure awaits on a Morela cruise.
08:01Atoll protected.
08:06Marvin Solano is under a bit of pressure here early on.
08:08I think he knew he was in for a busy night.
08:10And now we're not disappointed so far.
08:12He's been really sharp, Richie.
08:13Yeah, he has indeed.
08:15And he's been very disciplined, I think.
08:17Doing some lovely work.
08:18That was just a perfect jab at the end of the round.
08:21Lovely.
08:28So it's the sixth round of this for Billy Adams.
08:31For the first time in his young pro career.
08:36Against Marvin Solano of Nicaragua.
08:39He's been put in against a lot of hot prospects around the place.
08:43And not just in recent years, Richie.
08:45Way back when, Rob Ziramirez, the former two-time Olympic champion,
08:51took him to a split decision when he was a young hopeful Solano in his own right.
08:56He's tough, isn't he, Solano?
08:58And yes, he's been in with the best Olympic champions of all sorts.
09:02And held his own, Paul.
09:04So yes, he's very decent.
09:07Here you can see that he's getting a little bit frustrated, like we spoke about.
09:11And what he's got to try and do, he's got to try and drag Billy Adams into that toe-to-toe battle.
09:17Where then it's evened up a little bit more, you see.
09:20But Adams isn't having any of it.
09:22He's staying very disciplined, keeping the punches straight.
09:25Look at his style, look at his guard.
09:27And he's just measuring the distance and not going over the front foot.
09:31So it's a very patient display indeed.
09:33And basically just breaking his opponent down.
09:36Physically and mentally.
09:38And this is the way to go about it.
09:39Up to now, I think it's impressive.
09:48It's not in Solano's mentality, is it?
09:51To sit back and survive.
09:53And that's why he gets the good jobs like this on nights like this.
09:57But he's in the line of fire.
09:59And Adams senses that.
10:01Senses a potential big breakthrough.
10:04Does throw that left off the southpaw.
10:07Stands really well.
10:08And he's having no problems finding the target with that, Richie.
10:10It's the second line of offensive.
10:12I think what Adams has probably got to do now, Paul,
10:15is just bring his left uppercut into play.
10:17If you see Solano, his head's this way than that.
10:20Bobbing and weaving.
10:21But he's a little bit open downstairs.
10:23And he'll be open to that left uppercut.
10:25He's just got to measure it with the jab.
10:27And as Solano commits with these swings,
10:30just whip that left uppercut through the middle.
10:37I'm so happy to stay in the pocket there, Adams.
10:39I sense that he doesn't worry too much about the power coming back the other way.
10:45That's what I like to see about Adams.
10:47Even when he's up close and he's in punching range,
10:51then his guard is still good.
10:53A lot of these shots aren't really getting through from Solano.
10:56Yeah, and then he's backed up with some neat work of his own.
10:59But he's well-disciplined and well-schooled.
11:02And it's good to see that.
11:03His guard's nice and tight, as it should be.
11:06Slightly different theme to this third round.
11:09Closer quarters.
11:11And again, Adams stepping in sharply.
11:16Solano will prefer this type of a battle, to be quite honest,
11:19because the heads can clash, anything can happen in terms of cuts.
11:24And he just might land a lucky shot here and there.
11:27The boxer turned into a little bit of an in-fighter there, Billy Adams.
11:31I mentioned all the family know-how,
11:34but also advising him, the one and only Colin McMillan.
11:38Colin was the one-time WBO featherweight champion of the world.
11:43And in his time, I think it's fair to say,
11:46one of the very best British fighters, pound for pound, that we had.
11:50He was fantastic, his speed was unbelievable, Colin McMillan.
11:53I actually boxed in the mid-80s with him in the same England team.
11:57I was at light middle, he was at feather.
11:59He was exceptional, he was brilliant.
12:01Very unlucky, really, the way injuries afflicted him through his career,
12:06really stopped his run as a world champion.
12:09But he's part of the Brains Trust and his mate from his fighting days.
12:13Dennis Adams is the dad.
12:15Dennis and Colin used to be regular sparring partners.
12:21Seconds out, round four.
12:24They are all in it together.
12:26Two of his uncles, Richard and Danny, were pros as well.
12:29I don't think they do a lot of boasting in the Adams family,
12:32but apparently young Billy was impertinent enough to say,
12:36none of you lot want an ABA at the age of 18,
12:38so I've got one over you for life.
12:40Absolutely.
12:46Again, lovely, educated jab there.
12:49Not getting too greedy.
12:51Just picking, poking away with it.
12:55Solano, as we said before, he's tough,
12:58he's unorthodox and he swings wildly,
13:01but these straight shots from Adams,
13:04it's good work from him.
13:06There you go again, look.
13:20So it's a very hot night here at York Hall.
13:23Crowd are packed in.
13:26And maybe just a question as to whether Adams can keep the pace up,
13:30remembering that he's not done this trick before.
13:33That gets into a fighter's mind sometimes, Richard, doesn't it?
13:36I don't know I can do it until I've done it.
13:38Yeah, exactly, definitely, Paul.
13:40Good bit of work there for him.
13:42I think he heard Solano downstairs with the body shot,
13:45in that sequence there.
13:47Made Solano go back a little bit,
13:49his body language certainly changed.
13:51Some went into a shell, he's recovered now,
13:54but nevertheless some good work there from Adams.
13:56Again, all set up from behind that lead hand.
14:00He just whipped that left hand downstairs.
14:06So this is what Solano will want,
14:08this toe-to-toe stuff,
14:10where he can actually land a shot,
14:12because at mid and long range he's landed nothing at all.
14:16Solano is finding it very difficult,
14:18but on the inside, look, he's rough, he's tough,
14:20he's a real rugged sort of customer,
14:22and this is the type of contest that he wants.
14:26I kind of like the way Adams has accepted
14:28the gauntlet that's been thrown down here, Richie, though.
14:31There'll be a lot of fighters at his stage,
14:33given the kind of range of expertise around the young prospect,
14:37that say, no, this is your game, stay on the outside,
14:40we need to win this one, you need to bank the rounds and so on.
14:43Adams, using ring intelligence to me,
14:45has decided for himself,
14:47I need to show I can do a different job against this kid
14:51for a round or two.
14:52Absolutely, and the thing is, Paul, as well,
14:54why it's a good training exercise for him,
14:56it's mentally, it's very good to break the opponent down,
15:00not get complacent, because these guys are tough
15:03and they're still in it right to the very end,
15:05and you have to keep your shape
15:07and you have to keep discipline mentally,
15:09and that's what he's doing at the moment,
15:11so it's a real good workout for him here.
15:16If he can get a stoppage, it would be fantastic,
15:18because not a lot of people have stopped,
15:20there are only four stoppages this guy's had, remember?
15:22Defeats.
15:24He's had a bit of a go in over at close quarters,
15:26has Solano, last shot,
15:28there were two beyond the belt,
15:30but it was a really lovely shot to the solar plexus,
15:34the last counting shot of the round from Adams, that.
15:38There's a little bit of eye damage there on young Adams,
15:41his left eye.
15:44That's the only risk, of course,
15:46and you did mention it, Richie, about close combat.
15:52Yeah, apart from that, I mean, this is,
15:54see the little shot there, this was after the belt,
15:56there was a lovely punch downstairs there from Adams.
15:59Just got a little graze of some sort under that left eye.
16:08They've just put the end swell on it,
16:09I don't think it's an issue, Richie, at the moment anyway,
16:11and better under the eye than over it, of course, as well.
16:13Yeah, absolutely, yeah.
16:15Dennis had just said there,
16:17don't let him get too close and go more long range.
16:24So far a concentrated performance from Billy Adams,
16:27an intelligent performance and a very composed corner.
16:30Just a reminder from Sean McAvoy, the referee,
16:33about some of the finer points of infighting.
16:38I think Solano will just rip them up
16:41and throw them in the corner, do you?
16:43Absolutely, yeah.
16:47But he'll give any young prospect a run, won't he?
16:51Solano is tough.
16:54And like I say, he throws shots from all different angles.
16:59And if you do hold your feet, well, look,
17:01he's really brought into it.
17:03So, yeah, he's a tough customer
17:05and it's a good learning contest, this, for Billy Adams.
17:08So Adams from the outside,
17:10again, a change of tactic in this round.
17:15Back to where we started, the Southpaw stylist
17:18showing a few different sides to his game tonight,
17:20which is a very good thing.
17:24Yeah, just when he moved movement to his right,
17:27it's a little bit more.
17:29Just watch out for that left hook, that left swing,
17:32but generally when an orthodox boxer is throwing that shot,
17:35he's got to be a little bit closer, you see,
17:37it's a bent-arm punch.
17:38So there you go, see the jab and then move off to the right,
17:41and then you're moving away from his more powerful hand,
17:43which is the right hand,
17:44but you just have to watch in the left hook
17:46from the orthodox opponent.
17:47That's a cracking shot, absolute cracker,
17:49and he's had it on, Solano.
17:51That's stiffened every part of his body for a moment.
17:54That was a lovely punch, it really was,
17:56because he brought Solano onto it.
17:58Well-timed, and again.
18:01Lovely counter-punching, that was.
18:06Gets a bit disorganised for a moment, Solano,
18:09trying to laugh it off, but he knows he was under pressure.
18:13And this is where you have to keep your discipline, that's good.
18:16So a little shot there, but just try and create a bit of space
18:19when you do come together.
18:22And I think this has been excellent for Big Adam in this round here,
18:26because Solano obviously wants him to stand and trade,
18:29but he's been in there with the feet,
18:31he's brought him onto the shots,
18:33and he hasn't really taken the bait, Adam,
18:35so this is good, again, he's set up behind his lead-arm.
18:42Last minute of the fifth round.
18:46Every minute counts when you're as young as Billy Adams,
18:49soaking up the experience.
18:52APPLAUSE
18:55Good work.
19:03Solano fully 12 years older at 33.
19:16Oh, lovely.
19:18That was lovely there from Adams, in and out with the feet.
19:22And Solano's still dangerous, wants Adams to come forward and trade,
19:26but Adams is doing it very sensibly, hitting them, moving.
19:30Good stuff.
19:38Solano gets another ticking off one to start the round and one to end it.
19:43WHISTLE BLOWS
19:45Chief support tonight could be a real cracker.
19:48Alois Junior against Alonso Berardi.
19:52There are plenty of hopes both ways.
19:56Alois Junior has been so exciting so far.
19:59Still the early stages, still only 21, of course,
20:02but Berardi's unbeaten, and he's come to London to win.
20:12Really looking forward to that one.
20:16Into the Adams corner.
20:33BELL RINGS
20:35Again, Sean McAvoy reminding Solano about a few of the finer points.
20:40Solano, fast out of the blocks, knows the only way to change the pattern
20:45in terms of scoring is to go out and blaze through Adams in this round.
20:49Adams was ready for that.
20:54Just hit and move, keep the punches nice and straight.
20:58Don't hold your feet, because this is obviously what Solano wants now,
21:01he's just going to throw the kitchen sink at it.
21:03I think Adams has won more or less every round,
21:06you're in against an opponent who's fairly dangerous,
21:09who swings wildly, and who knows, he could catch you with one.
21:12So it's just about staying disciplined now,
21:14keeping the punches nice and straight,
21:17and just maintain that gap in distance between yourself and Solano.
21:36WHISTLE BLOWS
21:54Oh, that was a lovely little shot, you know.
21:56That right lead up there from Adams,
21:58so he's showing great variation also here.
22:01I think it's been a great display at mid and long range,
22:04even on the inside also, occasionally you just see him
22:07with the odd shot here and there,
22:09shows his quality also in its short range, does Adams.
22:13Richie, when you go from four to six,
22:16when they tell you that your next job is at six rounds,
22:19how much doubt might that put in a fighter's mind to start with?
22:23Not a lot, Paul, when you're used to four rounds,
22:25because he'll have done plenty in the gym, you see.
22:28I think the question marks really start going into a boxer's mind
22:32when he starts going to ten rounds.
22:34I found that I did six and eight rounds,
22:36I could do them in my sleep right from the word go,
22:38because I was always very fit,
22:40and most boxers are probably sparring six, eight rounds anyway,
22:43so it's when you go to ten and twelve rounds
22:46when the question marks start to come into your mind,
22:49because that's different kettle of fish, ten and twelve round contest,
22:52so he'll be OK going into the six rounds for the first time,
22:56and going into eight rounds, to be quite honest.
22:59Solano, of course, has campaigned many a time over eight rounds,
23:03but these have been six hard rounds for him tonight
23:06against a very accomplished young fighter.
23:09Very early days, we know that, for Billy Adams.
23:14But showing a lot of intelligence,
23:17and a great deal of composure,
23:19in addition to his obvious gifts as a boxer.
23:24That's stuff you can't necessarily teach, it's got to be in there.
23:30He just needs to keep the head out of harm's way here,
23:34and does so right to the end.
23:38Grudge in touch of the gloves.
23:42Solano knows he's been schooled there by Billy Adams in many, many ways.
23:48There's just that momentary concern over the little swelling
23:52under that left eye of Adams,
23:54but the doctor's in there just to check that all is well,
23:57and all is certainly well, Richie, with the performance.
24:00I think that's a cracking little performance, to be quite honest.
24:03It's only his fourth contest,
24:05and he's in with a guy who's had nearly over 40 contests,
24:08so that's not too bad at all.
24:10He's only been stopped four times as well.
24:12It's a good learning contest for him.
24:14Six rounds, and he had to keep his shape and stay disciplined,
24:17and not get caught up.
24:18It could have been a totally different kettle of fish
24:21if he'd stood toe-to-toe and tried to blast that guy out,
24:24because then it becomes a 50-50.
24:26I'm really pleased with that display.
24:28He'll learn from it, he'll only get better,
24:30and I like what I see in Billy Adams.
