A 46-year-old man, detained in connection with a knife attack that left two women injured at a surau two weeks ago, pleaded not guilty at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on Monday to two charges of attempted murder.

Mohammad Ferdaus Mashud, who freelances in advertising, made the plea before Judge Noor Ruzilawati Mohd Noor.

00:24According to the charge sheet, the father of five was accused of using a sharp object
00:30to cause injuries to a mobile phone salesgirl and a religious schoolteacher with the intent
00:35or knowledge that it would cause their death.
00:38The offence was allegedly committed at Surau al Ihsaniya Ahmadiyya in Kalana Jaya around
00:441.30pm on August 9.
00:47He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides up to 20 years' imprisonment
00:53if convicted.
00:54During mitigation, Defence Counsel Kailash Sharma pleaded for bail, saying that his client
01:00was not a flight risk.
01:02He also asked for the bail to be of reasonable sum, as the accused has, to support his ex-wife
01:08and their five children.
01:10The court allowed bail at 15,000 ringgit, with one surety for both charges, and set
01:15September 23 for mention.
01:17The accused was also ordered surrender his passport to the court, report to the police
01:22station on the 1st of each month, and to not intimidate prosecution witnesses.
