Supermarket Sweep has been re-created – with a twist

Supermarket Sweep has been re-created – with a twist.

Shoppers were tasked with finding five items in five minutes while wearing glasses to recreate different types of sight loss experienced by blind and partially sighted people (BPS).

It came after research revealed 68 per cent of visually impaired adults found going to the supermarket so stressful that they prefer not going altogether.

Only one shopper was able to complete the challenge in the time and all mistakenly picked up at least one incorrect item – such as custard instead of cream, or rigatoni pasta shapes instead of penne.

It was hosted by blind broadcaster Lucy Edwards and was designed by Müller Yogurt & Desserts to highlight the struggles faced by people living with sight loss.

George Vere, aged 31, a shopper who was given eyewear to remove his peripheral vision, said: “I had a complete lack of spatial awareness.”

While Eleanor Palmer aged 23, who wore glasses allowing her to perceive light only, said: “Oh my gosh, that is so hard. It's so disorientating – you literally have no idea where you are in the supermarket.”

00:00Oh my god, this is so difficult.
00:07Supermarkets can be challenging at the best of times,
00:10but for the blind and partially sighted, it can be a nightmare.
00:13And, as research from Muller reveals, some of our supermarket battles.
00:17I'm here in the supermarket today to give some of the members of the public
00:21the opportunity to experience what it's really like to shop when you're living with sight loss.
00:26So when you're shopping, if you're blind or partially sighted,
00:29it can be extremely challenging.
00:31Wearing Glassware from Thomas Pottington Trust,
00:34a charitable organisation that advocates for blind and partially sighted people,
00:38we're going to give you a small glimpse into what we go through.
00:42So your task is to find five items in five minutes.
00:46Lettuce, raspberries, penne pasta, natural yoghurt and cream.
00:52Good luck guys, and your five minutes starts now.
01:00Oh, this is really hard.
01:13Oh my gosh, that was so hard. It's so disorientating.
01:17You literally have no idea where you are in the supermarket.
01:20How did you find it?
01:21Yeah, it was really tricky.
01:23I had a complete lack of spatial awareness.
01:25It was really, really difficult.
01:27How did you do in your basket? Did you get the right items?
01:29I didn't get all the right items, but I think I did alright.
01:32So, I got...
01:33Let's have a feel.
01:34Yeah, I've got something here. I've got lettuce.
01:36Oh, everyone's getting that. Love it.
01:38Rather than cream, I got custard.
01:41I do that all the time.
01:44If this had a Navolins code on it,
01:47you wouldn't feel like it was just a load of hard little custard.
01:51There's so many products that go to waste when you are shopping as a visually impaired or blind person.
01:55It really gave me a lot of insight into what life is like.
01:58You get used to just feeling frustrated and thinking that this is your life and it will never change.
02:02So, thank you so much for highlighting it, because I think it's so important to show people.
02:07These shoppers have experienced a glimpse of what people from the blind and partially sighted community experience in a food shop.
02:13However, there are tools that exist to help the community independently shop.
02:18One such tool is Navolins.
02:20Navolins is a QR-style code which we can scan with our smartphone so we can independently navigate towards it.
02:26Look out for a Navolins code on a Muller packaging in a store near you.
